PSYCHO THRILL COLOGNE hosting STROM TON’s 3rd anniversary Episode vol.36 on April 3rd, 2021 via Cologne’s own 674.fm
STROM TON Cologne impresario Stefan Eul invited the Psycho Thrill CGN boss-man and radio colleague Claus Bachor especially for the 3rd anniversary of his 674.fm broadcast. And he played a consistently slammin' BreakBeat/ HiTechFunk/ House set on the cutting edge aof TECHNO, that Cologne/Düsseldorf club aficionados otherwise got or get to hear in the legendary BNKR, on the BangTech12 rooftop of the Detroit Bookie's or currently in pandemic free times at the Golzheim Club in Düsseldorf. Not really a surprise, but definitely the appropriate sound framework for everyone who feels committed to real Techno underground. In addition, the whole thing "handmade" only from vinyl and without compromises, featuring 44 Vinyl-Only-Tracks by The Beneficiaries/Eddie Fowlkes, Jeff Mills, Jessica Care Moore (Intro/Outro 2), Calibre (5), Attila Jahanvash, Shawn Rudiman, N-ter (2), Electro Nation, MAS2008, Ole Mic Odd feat. Drakkar Noir, Sound Synthesis, Nonentity, Shed (4), Distance Dancer/ Shed/ René Pawlowitz (2), Surgeon (3), Stef Mendesidis, Sigha (remixed by Planetary Assault Systems), Shifted (4), Menwood (2/ remixed by Answer Code Request), VCO, Ron Wilson, Stephanie Sykes (3/ remixed by Janice), LUZ1E, Oliver Hess (2/ remixed by Sterac/ Steve Rachmad), Robert Hood (3) and Mr.G // TRACK LISTING 01 THE BENEFICIARIES [EDDIE FOWLKES, JEFF MILLS, JESSICA CARE MOORE]: Metallic Stars [ A-side from “The Crystal City Is Alive” Axis AX087 US 2x12" | 2020 ] 02 CALIBRE [DOMINICK MARTIN]: Time To Breathe [ B-side from “Feeling Normal” Signature Records SIGLP-016 UK 4x12" | 2021 ] 03 CALIBRE: Has To Happen [ C1-track from “Feeling Normal” Signature Records SIGLP-016 UK 4x12" | 2021 ] 04 CALIBRE: Wrong [H2-track from “Feeling Normal” Signature Records SIGLP-016 UK 4x12" | 2021 ] 05 CALIBRE: Feeling Normal [ C2-track from “Feeling Normal” Signature Records SIGLP-016 UK 4x12" | 2021 ] 06 CALIBRE: Good Times [ E-side from “Feeling Normal” Signature Records SIGLP-016 UK 4x12" | 2021 ] 07 ATTILAH JAHANVASH: High Rize [ Previously unreleased Demo-track from Psycho Thrill Recordings/ Authentic Music Dubplate-12" | 2002 ] 08 SHAWN RUDIMAN: Caustic Hammer [ B1-track from “TRO-3” TRO-3 / Clone Distr. Fantastic Four Vol 1 #242
Mon Dec 21 2020 [12:25 AM] Wack'd: FANTASTIC FOUR VOL 1 NO 242 [12:27 AM] Wack'd: A weird assortment
[12:27 AM] Wack'd: Was this an Avengers lineup at some point or what [12:28 AM] maxwellelvis: Probably a Defenders one [12:28 AM] Wack'd: That makes more sense yeah [12:28 AM] maxwellelvis: but then, who hasn't been a Defender at this point? [12:29 AM] Wack'd: I invite you to read this in the voice of the Amazing World of Ghosts narrator
[12:29 AM] maxwellelvis: "Could this supernova be the work of ghosts from the sixth dimension?" [12:30 AM] Wack'd: So it turns out this meteor is driven by Terrax. This is a very grandiose and philosophical introduction for such a stupid character whose main appeal, to this point, has been having no real interiority whatsoever [12:32 AM] Wack'd: Meanwhile in the Baxter, Sue is upset that they need to throw out the Christmas tree, since it's so majestic [12:32 AM] Wack'd: And then she's mad at Reed because it turns out it's a mechanical tree that folds itself up to be put away for next year [12:33 AM] Wack'd: Reed is confused as to why she's upset and honestly for the first time in recorded history I'm with him on this [12:33 AM] Wack'd: If you couldn't tell it was a fake looking at it than it's fine, jesus [12:33 AM] maxwellelvis: *shocked monkey puppet gif* [12:34 AM] maxwellelvis: Just in shock that you're in agreement with Reed on something, ever. [12:34 AM] Wack'd: Maybe I just have no time for arguments from authenticity about Christmas [12:34 AM] Wack'd: I could give less of a shit [12:35 AM] Wack'd: Also have this example of exemplary parenting
[12:35 AM] maxwellelvis: Oh, they still have Timmy [12:35 AM] Wack'd: ...ohhhhh I misread the emphasis on that label [12:35 AM] maxwellelvis: NOT A FLYING TOY [12:36 AM] Wack'd: The joke is Franklin made it into a real missile [12:36 AM] Wack'd: I thought the joke was it's not a toy but the joke is it's not supposed to fly [12:36 AM] Wack'd: That's egg on my face [12:36 AM] maxwellelvis: Buzz Lightyear is not a flying toy [12:37 AM] Wack'd: Meanwhile Ben takes care of some very stupid muggers [12:37 AM] Wack'd: And Johnny and Frankie are out on the town [12:37 AM] maxwellelvis: Who looks at the 7-ft tall orange lump and thinks "Yeah, I can take him"? [12:38 AM] Wack'd: They were apparently fooled by the hat and trenchcoat but he is still, again, 7-ft high and like three feet wide [12:38 AM] maxwellelvis: He's a boulder with limbs! [12:40 AM] Wack'd: Frankie and Johnny are going to visit Frankie's roommate who is in an off-off-Broadway production of...*googles* [12:40 AM] Wack'd: ElfQuest?????? [12:41 AM] maxwellelvis: I see what you're doing there, Johnny B [12:41 AM] Wack'd:
[12:41 AM] maxwellelvis: This was at a time when Marvel was the ones publishing ElfQuest [12:42 AM] Wack'd: Huh! [12:42 AM] maxwellelvis: before it went self-published. [12:42 AM] maxwellelvis: @Bocaj would probably know more. [12:43 AM] Wack'd: I don't have a joke here, this is just a neat effect
[12:45 AM] maxwellelvis: Like I've said tons of times, the hardest thing about John Byrne is that he IS talented, so it's not like most really disliked figures in the industry where you can point to obvious flaws in their writing or illustrations. It's just that his ego vastly outpaces his talent. [12:45 AM] Wack'd: I feel like I've pointed out some pretty obvious flaws in his writing but to each their own [12:45 AM] maxwellelvis: I mean, not everything anyone churns out will be good. [12:46 AM] Bocaj: I read most of all of ElfQuest. It was actually self published first and then Marvel reprinted it. Except since ElfQuest had longer issues than Marvel standard, marvel just awkwardly cut at the right page length [12:46 AM] maxwellelvis: Ah [12:46 AM] Wack'd: Sure but not everything anyone churns out will be, uh [12:46 AM] Wack'd: Grotesquely bigotted [12:46 AM] Wack'd: Anyway [12:47 AM] Wack'd: The Four plus Frankie reunite at the Baxter for the arrival of Terrax [12:48 AM] Wack'd: You can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty fucking sure this is the first time ever the Baxter Building has been fucking annihilated and it's wild to me we're spending this on friggin' Terrax
[12:48 AM] maxwellelvis: At least it's not Blastaar [12:50 AM] Bocaj: Is he mad because they cost him a job? [12:50 AM] maxwellelvis: Sounds like what he's ticked about. [12:50 AM] Wack'd: I think he's pissed they got him that job, actually [12:51 AM] Wack'd: Way back when the Four teamed up with Galactus to take out the Sphinx [12:51 AM] maxwellelvis: SPHINX! [12:51 AM] Wack'd: A condition was the Four would recruit his new Herald for him and he really wanted this fucker because he's so dang evil he wouldn't turn on him for being more evil [12:52 AM] Wack'd: Anyway. Fight fight fight [12:52 AM] Bocaj: I mean, it is kind of a dick move to get a guy into a contract he can't break [12:53 AM] Wack'd: So Terrax' plan is, uh. Step one: get on top of the Twin Towers [12:53 AM] Wack'd: *tugs collar* [12:54 AM] Wack'd: Step two: do some kind of cosmic energy thing [12:54 AM] maxwellelvis: Hoo boy, one of these situations again. [12:54 AM] Wack'd: Sue uses her powers to turn Terrax' whatever-he's-doing visible, and he's. Uh. Put Manhattan in a big net? [12:55 AM] maxwellelvis: BUTTERFLY NETS! [12:56 AM] Wack'd: So! This issue promised some illustrious guest stars and the issue is almost over [12:56 AM] Wack'd: Who doesn't love a Red Skies Crossover? [12:56 AM] maxwellelvis: I believe we've just been Byrne'd, @Wack'd [12:56 AM] Bocaj: Ok. I'm not entirely impressed by putting Manhattan in a big net. Fucking Zodiac of all people did that once too [12:57 AM] Wack'd: Marvel as Peter sees the big net from May's house! Gasp as Donald Blake gets stuck in traffic! Be amazed as Tony Stark is forced to actually listen to his secretary and not just yell over him! Be wowed as Daredevil uses his enhanced senses to notice people are freaked out! [12:58 AM] maxwellelvis: This is one of his specialties. He did it so much he poked fun at it in Sensational She-Hulk. [12:59 AM] Bocaj: He and Claremont did something similar in Dark Phoenix too [12:59 AM] maxwellelvis: There's an issue where the cover has some of the most popular heroes of the time on it, and a caption proclaiming they were "ON THIS ISSUE" [12:59 AM] maxwellelvis: with Shulkie pushing up the bottom of the cover and saying, "But notice it doesn't say anything about them being IN this issue." [12:59 AM] Bocaj: I feeeeeeeeeeeeeel like it was more worth it for DP [12:59 AM] Bocaj: Danny Phoenix [12:59 AM] Wack'd: It's very important that the giant net remain visible! We're not going to draw it in these panels, and we're not going to explain why, but it's very important!
[12:59 AM] Wack'd: Anyway no girls in this adventure [01:00 AM] Bocaj: 😐 [01:00 AM] maxwellelvis: "We need to establish a cootie-free perimeter for this to work" [01:01 AM] Wack'd: And so we arrive at Terrax's master plan [01:01 AM] Wack'd: To throw all of Manhattan at Galactus as collateral so the Four will assassinate him for him [01:01 AM] Wack'd: Frankly, this seems like yet another case where the team would've just done this anyway if you asked nicely [01:02 AM] maxwellelvis: Yeah, but the Four would have wasted time with "evacuations" and "finding shelters for the dispossessed citizens" and "alerting the other heroes" [01:02 AM] Bocaj: So he netted up Manhattan [01:02 AM] Bocaj: And pulled it out of the ground [01:02 AM] Bocaj: To throw at Galactus? [01:02 AM] Wack'd: Well [01:03 AM] Wack'd: He brought it along as collateral [01:03 AM] Wack'd: Didn't have another ship for the Four to ride along in I guess [01:03 AM] Bocaj: Manhattan gets yanked out of it spot weirdly often [01:03 AM] Bocaj: You'd think it would have some effect on the structural stability of the ground rock [01:03 AM] Wack'd: And yet

Favorite Movies as of 2021
Subject to updating because surely I’ve missed a few. This is not supposed to be a list of meritorious films but rather just a list of movies I genuinely enjoy. It runs from Shakespeare to Bill & Ted with heavy doses of 80s fantasy, superhero schlock, and pretty much anything with Kurt Russell in it. Enjoy.
1- Harvey No contest, my favorite of all time.
2- Big Trouble in Little China It’s always a great joy to introduce a new viewer to this film.
3- Flash Gordon (1980) In which they totally lean into the camp and low budget.
4- The Thing I watch this annually upon the first major snowfall.
5- Titus (Taymor) One winter break Titus would be on one of the movie channels each day when I woke up, so I watched it daily for a month and it didn’t get old.
6- Death to Smoochy “Are you alright?” “I’m a little fucked up in general so it’s hard to gauge.”
7- Blade Runner (The Final Cut) So there’s this dude Deckard and he hunts robots but it turns out HE’S a robot, oh so very clever, little film
8- Tombstone I recently learned that Kurt Russell directed this film in all but name.
9- The Dark Crystal Immersive fantasy, though I’m sure it appears plain, drab, and simple now after the Netflix prequel.
10- Somewhere in Time I’m a romantic, I guess. Thus all the John Carpenter movies.
11- Grosse Pointe Blank So good, I used to think I liked John Cusack.
12- The Producers (musical) You heard me. Wilder and Mostel were great but the musical version had decades to mill over and expand the premise.
13- To Be or Not To Be (Brooks) Surprisingly suspenseful.
14- The 13th Warrior Saw it again recently and it holds up. Horror, only it happens to viking warriors who would rather chop the horror down than run.
15- The Mighty Thor I mean, Black Panther is objectively the best of the lot but subjectively this is my personal favorite superhero flick. I must have seen it a half a dozen times at least.
16- Lost Boys A billion Chinese can’t be wrong.
17- Die Hard A Christmas tradition. As a postman, it’s cathartic for me to watch Christmas get blown up a little before all the hugging and sentiment.
18- The Blues Brothers Deadpan hilarity cut with performances by legends of blues and soul.
19- The Sting The best heist film. It keeps you guessing until the very end and no twist feels arbitrary or leaves a hole.
20- Interview with the Vampire Fun fact, I looked like Pitt’s Louis when I was a young man in the goth scene.
21- Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure “Be excellent to each other!” “Party on, dudes!” *air guitar*
22- The Seventh Seal See? This list has its high points.
23- Revolutionary Girl Utena Note: Read the entire manga, watch the entire anime series, and read Adolescence of Utena BEFORE watching this or you’ll be left confused. Dazzled but confused.
24- The Nightmare Before Christmas So good I got the tarot deck.
25- The Last Unicorn It’s still a damn shame they never made that live action remake. Christopher Lee was set to reprise King Haggard.
26- Chasing Amy Honestly changed my life.
27- Excalibur It’s weird though how they’re always in armor. Wedding? Armor. Dinner? Armor. Deathbed? Armor.
28- Ginger Snaps A cut above any other werewolf movie I’ve seen.
29- Top Secret! My sense of humor distilled.
30- Clash of the Titans (Harryhousen) Yeah it’s dry but then there’s the monsters.
31- Monty Python’s the Meaning of Life People are not wearing enough hats.
32- Shadow of the Vampire Nosferatu nearly made this list but it’s hard to pinpoint a definitive cut. Try instead this film about the making of Nosferatu with an actual vampire as the vampire.
33- Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust Look, we as a culture had the unfortunate experience of Twilight. This is the same premise but actually good.
34- The Last Supper This film challenged and changed me as a young man more so than any other work of art.
35- The Princess Bride The perfect film, but I’ve seen it so much it’s down at 35 now.
36- Blazing Saddles What can I as a white guy say? Just watch the movie.
37- Streets of Fire Always suspicious to me how Final Fight premiered within a year of this movie.
38- Gremlins More Christmas havok. Yum?
39- The Beastmaster Forgotten and underappreciated.
40- Ladyhawke A thing of beauty.
41- Willow C’mon. It’s Willow. I have nothing to justify here.
42- Speed Racer I know you heard it’s bad but hear me out: it is the strongest narrative I’ve ever seen on film and it’s exactly the way you played with your toy cars when you were little.
43- Angelheart You’re supposed to know that de Niro is Lucifer. The rest is mystery and the final reveal set up a trope that’s been done into the ground nowadays.
44- The Hunger More atmosphere than plot, but hey, vampire Bowie!
45- Zoolander My partner’s favorite.
46- Faust (Murnau) You will be shocked to see what was possible to achieve in film in 1926.
47- A Muppet Christmas Carol but a cut that includes the fiance’s song This finishes out my traditional Christmas films.
48- Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Y’know, I’ve got two Branagh films on here and neither are what you would expect given his catalog. The other one’s Thor for crying out loud.
49- Highlander I noticed in recent editions of Vampire: the Masquerade that it’s still possible in that game to hide a katana in a trenchcoat. This movie is why.
50- The Name of the Rose One of only a few instances where I prefer the film to the book. That book loooooong.
51- Robocop (1987) Of all the damn science fiction, why must we be in Robocop?
52- The Prophecy Now we’re getting into films I demoted since the last time I updated this list. This film’s a slow burn unless you get turned up for angels and Christopher Walken like I do.
53- The Warriors Would be higher if the opening wasn’t so slow.
54- Legend Tim Curry kills it as Darkness.
55- Black Panther Objectively the best superhero movie and the Academy backs me on that one.
56- Wonder Woman I do wish they’d trot out Vandal Savage as a Wonder Woman villain.
57- Captain America: The Winter Soldier Just rewatched this one earlier! It is heavily marked by the height of the War on Terror.
58- Blade The ancestor of all modern superhero movies and a solid vampire flick to boot.
59- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Nostalgic for me? Maybe, but I hold that this is the first comic film worth a damn because they stuck with the comics when they wrote it.
60- Captain America: the First Avenger This movie is a real test of character. If someone doesn’t like Cap it’s because they think goodness is unrealistic.
61- Four Rooms Really just rooms 3 and 4.
62- Reservoir Dogs Hey, two Tim Roth films in a row!
63- Event Horizon Do you see?
64- What Dreams May Come Kind of an emotional ringer, especially after William’s death.
65- Monty Python and the Holy Grail Have I watched it into the ground? Yes. Is it still hilarious? Yes, and it gets funnier the more you study Arthurian myth.
66- Pulp Fiction I’m kinda over this now.
67- The Crow People who liked the comic passionately disagree with me but I still like this one.
68- Akira Still.
69- Ghost in the Shell Still, though the farther you get from 13 the less titties you need in your art.
70- Beetlejuice Why not? Let's just tack this on there.
Honorable Mentions:
Fight Club A suburb film but one I grew out of, as should everyone. If you meet a man who’s passionate about Fight Club, run!
American Psycho Ditto. I grew out of this but it’s still excellent.
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape A horrible caricature of my brother’s life. I don’t get along with my brother any more.
Rocky Horror Picture Show Not actually a good film if you watch it straight with no commentary. Still, it’s a cornerstone of queer culture.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 Of all the superhero films, this is the one that resonated with me the most. I was in a weird place at the time. It still resonates with me now because I’m a foster dad.

The Paddock
Tristan Chase Sparrowe
11/25/2016
The Bull
One day in the fall of autumn, when the moon is high and bright, orange in hue and full in complexion, when the clouds hang oppressively low in the sky I wandered through the meadow to the buffalo paddock, newly installed by decree of the mayor of San Francisco about two months ago.
The headlines in the newspaper were all the same, dismal in hue, recording the afterthoughts of the Mayor. “'The park commissioners expect soon to procure a buffalo cow who will lighten the hours of his confinement,' Harrison says”. Tomorrow the buffalo, Anastasius will be married to his bride-to-be, a new import from a ranch in Wyoming, where my uncle lives with his wife, and a dog, where they have retired and where my uncle hunts and participates in environmental conservation.
It's brisk, with many clouds of smoke blowing from the corners of my mouth into the Fall air. The grass has just been clear cut, and the smell invades my nostrils. The dew from the morning and previous evening cling to the individual hordes of grass scintillating in the dawn evening light. I have been up for a day and a night approximately and everything seems to vibrate around me.
I am here with a specific purpose. No one is around the buffalo paddock the night after Thanksgiving, the city itself is deserted, let alone the park and its many intertwining trails. I could walk for miles on these days in San Francisco, traversing the entire seven by seven without seeing a single person.
I reached into my backpack and extracted a long pair of bolt cutters I had purchased for a penny at Goodman Lumber two days ago.
A swift look to my left, and to my right, and into the stable at Anastasius as he sleeps. The strong bull grunts and twitches in his sleep as steam puffs from his nostrils. His side rises and falls as he breathes and his ears twitch a bit. It is a pity for such a sculptural beast to be imprisoned as he waits for a wedding he has no say in and a migration pattern that is now limited to across the paddock. Either way, an option might be a change of pace for him. A change of scenery, a chance to spread his wings before wearing his proverbial wedding ring around his hoof.
A link in the chain link fence snaps open and then another, and another as I make an archway about the size of an Ort cloud in the distance. Finally the metal links curl like a pad of melted butter to the wet grass. Anastasius sighs deeply and continues his dream. I ponder where he might be in his mind for a moment. The plains with his kin, avoiding native species of humans and the great white hunters of the fields where they used to graze. Possibly butting heads with an alpha male or turning on his heels to run. In space or in a hell like place, with demons floating above his massive cranium. An endless pasture where he sits in a cloud of cow fermones, butterflies braiding his mane.
I find myself walking a few paces ahead, erstwhile extracting the axe from a loop in the lining of my coat. I question my motives one last time before raising the axe above my head and, hearing the blade glint I let it fall into a mass of decomposing wood that surrounds the buffalo encasement. A crack resounds and a group of black birds flutter into the air squeaking as they fly. Anastasius stirs. I let the blade strike again, over and over until I break a hole in his cage. I kick the horizontal beams until they become diagonal and finally...
The bull's eye catches my attention. He has been watching me for some time. I breathe “You're free now lil' buddy,” and continue to circle around back towards the hole in the cyclone fence. Anastasius whines a bit. And grunts again.
I consider my motives and consider this new found freedom that I now share with the bull. It never felt like optimism to free the bull, just felt like a circumstance, a necessity, of the era that I live in. The symbolism of this pack animal now caged by himself, a migratory creature that is now forced to stay in one place. A metaphor for the elimination of the Native Americans who relied so heavily on the existence of the herd. And the grasses that cultivated with the motion of the species, and now wanes due to it's disappearance. What a pity. I wonder why he does not leap anymore, if he is lacking some sort of bacterial family in his gut or if his brain is lacking a certain chemical, why he has accepted his fate as a caged being, why he does not call out or try to create an alliance with a human to help facilitate his escape.
A mild panic surges through my veins and works its way into my knees making me weak for a spell. I tuck all my tools and hike back towards the main road. I decide to wait for a moment by a streetlamp and spark up a cigarette.
I think about the stars for a moment and try to locate Orion's belt. Somehow when compared to the power of the cosmos, my own worldly problems seem immaculately minuscule. And then came a dull rustle from the bushes lining the Fulton street border of the park. Anastasius slowly emerges from the darkness, then pauses, kicking his hind legs out to stretch. One, and then the other. A glow from my cigarette and the plume of smoke from my lungs catches his attention and he freezes.
Now that nothing is separating myself from such a large powerful animal I feel the weakness in my knees again and somehow the cigarette's effects seem more intense. I lower my head a bit to acknowledge his presence and say “fair thee well monsieur.” He lowers his head back at me and then he trots off in the direction of Ocean Beach.
His silhouette pirouettes and fades into the darkness of the night. When I arrive home I undress and lay in bed, and count to slow down my brain. Again I imagine the distance of the night sky, the size and millions of stars in the sky, compare them to the personalities here on earth and the endless multitudes of people. Once again I feel terribly small. Eventually I drift off and I, too am one with the cosmos.
The next day is the opening ceremony of the arrival of the new bison to the paddocks. Anastasius is to have a wife.
I make my way towards the modest crowd of people who have showed up to see the young bull procure a new wife. News teams are there and flashbulbs take snapshots of the Mayor arriving and emerging from his Lincoln town car led by police escort.
No one seems to suspect that Anastasius is not present, then again no one seems to care. The mayor stands up on a soapbox and gives a short speech, then motions like a circus conductor with his left hand to the truck containing the cow. Two men stationed on either side of the truck wearing overalls boots and golfers caps let down a metal ramp and a gate to the flatbed.
The cow, Anastasia, seems to be alarmed by the noise of the cheers of the crowd and the visage of a small excited yapping dog. She immediately starts to gallop into the paddock making a swift round and then charging out of the hole in the fence that I had cut the night before.
The music from the bandstand stops and the crowd gasps. The mayor throws his pork-pie hat to the ground and starts to shout at his assistants. A moment passes and sirens from firetrucks and police vehicles start to whine.
A large gap toothed grin stretches across my face. I laugh for a moment and then my forehead crinkles and I start to grimace. I don't pretend to understand what is going to happen to the bison nor do I feel guilt about setting them free. Seeing this crowd in a frenzy sets me off in an opposite trajectory from the crowd and the escaped cow.
That night at home with a hot toddie sitting by my wood burning stove with the neighborhood cat, Noodles, listening to the radio, the broadcast starts to announce, “In other news, police officials say they located the escaped buffalo which were to be married today on Ocean Beach and Ortega. The bull, Anastasius, and the cow, Anastasia were standing near the sea foam giving each other Eskimo kisses when authorities arrived. The mayor arrived shortly thereafter to find the police troop crying tears of joy. The band played “Auld lang syne” and the mayor hugged his wife. The mayor's assistants opened bottles of champagne and as the corks flew into the air the buffalo walked side by side down the coast.”
Noodles meowed and rolled around on his back.

Everything I Watched in 2019
Movies
The number in parentheses is year of release, asterisks denote a re-watch, and titles in bold are my favourite watches of the year.
01 The Death of Stalin (17) does a neat trick of building goodwill for Steve Buscemi’s Krushchev, then brutally pays that off in the last few minutes.
02 Sorry to Bother You (18)
03 Support the Girls (18)
04 Paddington (14)*
05 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (16)
06 Eighth Grade (18) probably the most terrifying movie I watched all year, if you didn’t watch it through your fingers, who even are you?
07 Morvern Callar (02) much less bleak than the book, but then, nearly anything would be
08 The Favourite (18) revolting and beautiful.
09 Columbus (17) a really lovely movie about architecture and parent-child relationships.
10 Bring it On (00)*
11 The Land of Steady Habits (18) feels wackier than your average Holofcener, but still a good watch.
12 Spotlight (15) i was really bowled over by this, and wasn’t expecting to be. Workmanlike filmmaking, but an extraordinary story, well-told.
13 The Killing of a Sacred Deer (17) Barry Keoghan is a blank, but somehow compelling screen presence. This one has an ending that made me bark with laughter.
14 Legends of the Fall (94)
15 Moneyball (11)* if you don’t feel like watching anything in particular, you can always watch Moneyball
16 If Beale St Could Talk (18) very beautiful, but I failed to connect with it on any other level.
17 For Keeps (88)
18 Abducted in Plain Sight (17)
19 Oscar Shorts (Animated) (18) the offerings were very sappy this year, but the winner was decent! Lots of Toronto content (weird).
20 Oscar Shorts (Live Action) (18) *unquestionably* the worst one of these won ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
21 Velvet Buzzsaw (19)
22 Vice (18) ugh
23 Friends with Money (06)
24 Can You Ever Forgive Me (18)
25 Bohemian Rhapsody (18) haha what. was. that.
26 Mars Attacks (96)*
27 Paddington 2 (18)
28 Buffy the Vampire Slayer (92)*
29 Shoplifters (18)
30 Blindspotting (18) jacked Ethan Embry in a supporting role?! Whither? Howso? Wherefore?
31 Witness (85)
32 Harry & the Hendersons (87)*
33 The Matrix (99)*
34 T2 Trainspotting (17)
35 Blockers (18)
36 The Slums of Beverly Hills (98)
37 Can’t Hardly Wait (98)*
38 Avengers: Infinity War (18)
39 Iron Man II (10)
40 Isle of Dogs (18)
41 Chinatown (74)*
42 To Live & Die in LA (85)
43 Age of Innocence (93) Daniel Day-Lewis manages to make Newland Archer compelling, where in the novel he’s...the worst?!
44 Shopgirl (05)*
45 The House (17) didn’t sustain all the way through, but then, that’s how mainstream comedies often go.
46 The Beguiled (17)
47 Badlands (73)*
48 Poetic Justice (93)
49 The Empire Strikes Back (80)*
50 Calibre (18)
51 The Kindergarten Teacher (18)
52 Hounds of Love (17) a nice little Aussie thriller, set in the 80s
53 Kicking & Screaming (95)*
54 Octopussy (83)*
55 Jaws (79)*
56 Lover Come Back (61)
57 Frenzy (72)
58 Always Be My Maybe (19)
59 Certain Women (16) took a while to get to this one, but it’s as great as they say it is.
60 Baby Driver (17) all flash, little substance.
61 Sneakers (92)
62 Roadhouse (87)*
63 Bull Durham (88)*
64 Ghostbusters (84)*
65 Booksmart (19) I think this will improve on multiple viewings, though I loved the soundtrack and the mix of characters.
66 Hereditary (18)
67 Rebecca (40) George Sanders as Rebecca’s cousin is BRILLIANT
68 Vertigo (58)*
69 The Dead Don’t Die (19)
70 Crawl (19)
71 Dazed & Confused (93)* If you don’t watch this once a summer, what is wrong with you?
72 Jackie Brown (97)
73 Talk Radio (88)
74 The Guilty (18)
75 Killing Heydrich (17)
76 Lady Bird (17)*
77 Billy Elliot (00)*
78 White House Down (13)* Channing Potatum saves the White House!
79 The Film Worker (17)
80 Whitney (18)
81 Mascot (16)
82 Apocalypse Now (79)* technically I’d only seen the Redux version from the early 2000s, so the regular cut is new to me.
83 Apollo 13 (95)*
84 Psycho 2 (83) the twist is very guessable, but there are a couple of nice-looking scenes.
85 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (04)*
86 The Bodyguard (92)*
87 Murder Mystery (19)
88 Wildlife (18)
89 The Stepford Wives (75)*
90 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (71)*
91 The Natural (84)
92 The Other Boleyn Girl (08)
93 Speed (94)*
94 Opera (87)
95 That’s my Boy (12) haha what?!
96 The Big Short (15)
97 Elizabeth the Golden Age (07)
98 The Glass Castle (17) when I read the book, I genuinely thought it was fiction, it’s so insane.
99 Dawn of the Dead (78)*
100 All About Eve (50) lady on lady violence is a special thing
101 La La Land (16)
102 Morning Glory (10) remember Rachel McAdams?
103 Casino (95)*
104 Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (06)
105 Pet Sematary (19)
106 Clue (85)*
107 Her Smell (18) amazing soundtrack and the songs were well-chosen. Heartbreaking musical moment in the final act.
108 Bobby Sands: 66 Days (16)
109 She’s Gotta Have it (86)
110 Good Morning (59)
111 Hustlers (19) I didn’t connect with this as much as the reviews led me to believe I might.
112 Nocturnal Animals (16)
113 Kill Bill Vol 1 (03) I’d only ever seen the second one before, being a non-Tarantino completionist.
114 Fried Green Tomatoes (91)* I watch this more than anticipated...
115 Steel Magnolias (89)
116 Notting Hill (99)*
117 A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (19) the tiny city models were inspired!
118 National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (89)*
119 Let It Snow (19)
120 Frozen (13)
121 The Irishman (19) most interesting as a sort of pastiche/reckoning on the part of Scorsese about his other gangster films. Really outmoded view of unions. Definitely could have been edited down if anyone were able to come to it without undue reverence, but I did love the bit about the fish.
122 Girls Trip (17) actual plot is beside the point.
123 About a Boy (02)* I always think of this as the “vomit and sweaters” movie, anyone else?
124 Animal House (78)*
DOCUMENTARY : FICTION - 4:120
THEATRE : HOME - 9:115
TV Series
01 Russian Doll - I think I would have enjoyed this more if it hadn’t been bingeable - would have made a nice week-by-week discussion sort of show. I loved to watch the changes between re-ups of our major characters, and I think the actual plotting would reward re-watches.
02 Catastrophe S4 - A satisfying ending to an excellent show, with very charismatic leads (and deeply weird supporting characters). Had to write around Carrie Fisher’s death, and I’m sure did a better job of it than Star Wars did.
03 Friends from College S2 - More of the same, which is what I was after. A show like cotton candy (but with more infidelity).
04 High Maintenance S3 - A lot more of this season took place outside of New York City, which was a great change of pace. And a great deal more information about The Guy and his own life; both difficulties and successes included.
05 Losers - This was a great little docuseries on Netflix that I didn’t hear a lot of people talking about - it’s about sports losses, but unusual sports ie curling, figure skating and the like. You’d think it would get repetitive, being as it’s always about recovering after loss, but it doesn’t! I wish they would make another season….
06 Shrill - a tight six episode dramedy about an alt-weekly journalist in the Pacific Northwest, based on Lindy West’s memoir of the same name. John Cameron Mitchell as her boss (based on Dan Savage) stands out of the ensemble cast, as does Annie’s roommate played by a British standup Lolly Adefope.
07 Broad City S5 - I haven’t always kept up with Broad City, but I came back to it for its final season, and thought it did a good job of setting its characters up for big changes in their lives.
08 I Think You Should Leave - It’s easy to assume that all sketch comedy is terrible and always will be, but then you see this, and throw your TV out the window (due to all the laffs)
09 Fleabag S2 - Everything you’ve heard is true, this season is goddamn hilarious and ridiculously sexy. A huge step up from the first season, which was already pretty fantastic and incisive.
10 Fosse/Verdon - Musicals are not particularly my bag, so I’m sure there was a lot that I missed in terms of references, but the lead performances ably carried me through all of the time jumps and various performances.
11 Stranger Things S3 - Say it after me: d-i-m-i-n-i-s-h-i-n-g r-e-t-u-r-n-s! Maya Hawke kills it, though.
12 Big Little Lies S2 - Unnecessary, and (if possible) even sillier than the first season.
13 Lorena - Part of the ongoing quest to rehabilitate the maligned women of the 1990s, this gave me tons of context that I had no idea about at the time, due to being a dumb kid.
14 Glow S3 - I felt like I was losing steam on this series this year, but episodes like the camping ep kept me coming back. A great ensemble, though some unusual character choices (like a certain kiss *cough*) took me out of it by times.
15 Lodge 49 S1-3 - I’d kept hearing about this show, so I finally sought it out. I can’t say it was amazingly compelling (I almost dropped it after the first season) but it’s definitely an oddball of a show, slipping from setpiece to setpiece with little regard for logic. For me, a background show.
16 Chernobyl - This show really gave me the Bad Feeling, humans were definitely A Mistake.
17 On Becoming a God in Central Florida - Kiki in a trashy mode, not as infinitely appealing as the version she pulled off in the second season of Fargo, but scrappy and industrious nonetheless.
18 Show Me a Hero - I’d put off watching this for years, it felt like it was going to be too dull (housing policy in Yonkers?) but it’s great, and larded up with Bruce Springsteen songs, obvs.
19 Great British Bake Off S9-S10 - I’d also held off on watching this for a long time, out of loyalty to Mel, Sue, and Mary Berry. But I needed some comfort viewing towards the end of the summer, and the new hosts and judge do an able job, although the show’s tropes are feeling a bit well-worn at this point.
20 Righteous Gemstones S1 - A rollicking ride for sure, with a great cast. Your mileage/patience with Danny McBride may vary, so keep that in mind, naturally.
21 This Way Up S1 - A small show starring the fabulous Aisling Bea, about mental health and families and some nice comic physical acting. Oh, and in case you were watching The Crown and crushing on Tobias Menzies’ version of Prince Phillip, he plays a hot dad love interest in this, which gives you all the Tobias you’re looking for, without the PP racisms.
22 The Crown S3 - This is the first season of the big cast switchover, and I thought it stuck reasonably well, once we were in it an episode or two. This season concentrated even less on Elizabeth herself, preferring her sister, husband, and (newly!) her children.

Fantastic Four Vol 1 #237
Tues May 05 2020 [01:26 AM] Wack'd: I...don't know how that last issue slots here in continuity [01:27 AM] Wack'd: Since we open with our heroes having just come back from Latveria [01:27 AM] Wack'd: They brought Doctor Doom's comatose body with them! So that way if he ever gets un-stasised it'll happen on their terms and not his [01:28 AM] Wack'd: And then he can be put on trial, apparently [01:28 AM] maxwellelvis: That annual is probably just something you can shove in wherever. [01:28 AM] Wack'd: Even though his unconscious body was extradited to another country and also he's a head of state [01:28 AM] Wack'd: I guess through that whole adventure the Four had Doom's body on hand?! [01:28 AM] Wack'd: Sure [01:29 AM] Wack'd: Okay so. Uh [01:29 AM] Wack'd: Doom isn't head of state again yet [01:29 AM] Wack'd: Makes sense, he did want to get rid of all his enemies first [01:30 AM] Wack'd: (You'd think having diplomatic immunity would make that easier but) [01:30 AM] Wack'd: So Reed's like "we're gonna put him in suspended animation and then I'll call the Latverian embassy and see what they want to do about all this" [01:31 AM] Wack'd: Given that there's not a Latverian government at the moment who fucking knows what happens from there but I guess it's not Reed's problem [01:31 AM] maxwellelvis: Let's just hope they don't get there and Boris is already there, waiting for them. [01:32 AM] maxwellelvis: Wouldn't that just be all they needed? [01:32 AM] Wack'd: Yeah [01:33 AM] Wack'd: Anyway Ben has begun worrying that Alicia loves him because he's a giant rock monster. For some reason. Which is bad. Also for some reason [01:33 AM] maxwellelvis: Because now he can fret about what happens if it goes away again [01:33 AM] Bocaj: "I love you for you" "How dare you" [01:34 AM] Wack'd: I know the breakup is coming. I can feel it in my bones and I'm gonna be so mad [01:34 AM] maxwellelvis: because he's seen in the past that Alicia does feel different about him when he's human [01:34 AM] Wack'd: She literally just saw him as a human one issue ago and was happily married to him so *shrug* [01:36 AM] Wack'd: Meanwhile Franklin goes to see Frankie [01:36 AM] Wack'd: Who you might remember was having a breakdown last we saw her [01:37 AM] Bocaj: She saw herself naked in the mirror [01:37 AM] Wack'd: Meet a new character! She seems fun
[01:38 AM] Wack'd: We go inside though and Frankie's still having a breakdown. Julie's kind of a jerk [01:38 AM] maxwellelvis: Wonder if she'll stick around or if she never comes back from that class. [01:39 AM] Wack'd: Now, Johnny knows Frankie's secret. She has genitals
[01:40 AM] Wack'd: We cut away and will find out NEXT ISSUE! Alas
[01:40 AM] maxwellelvis: A severe burn on her chest or torso, I'll wager. [01:40 AM] Wack'd: I've been spoiled on what her deal is and I somehow doubt it [01:41 AM] Wack'd: Meanwhilier, Reed Sue and Franklin have gone horseback riding through central park! [01:42 AM] Wack'd: oh good bryne hasn't forgotten franklin likes to watch his parents kiss
[01:43 AM] Wack'd: Fortunately Franklin's weird voyeurism is interrupted by an alarm [01:43 AM] Wack'd: hahahahahahahahahahahaahahah
[01:44 AM] maxwellelvis: Why are there two guys with green hair in this panel? [01:44 AM] Wack'd: It's the 80s, get with it, man [01:45 AM] maxwellelvis: It's only like 1982, the Aqua Net cloud hasn't even descended over the world yet. [01:46 AM] Wack'd: So the alarm is a bank alarm, and there's a gang of bank robbers being led by a 9-foot tall blue alien lady who doesn't speak English [01:46 AM] Wack'd: She uses some kind of psychic beam to knock out Reed, and then Sue and Franklin when they come looking [01:47 AM] Wack'd: Franklin knocks out the blue lady and the bank robbers need to carry her away
[01:48 AM] maxwellelvis: Man, I didn't think things were that hard for Mr. Goodwin. [01:48 AM] maxwellelvis: He shouldn't have to supplement his income like this. [01:48 AM] Wack'd: Hehehe [01:49 AM] Wack'd: Reed and Sue wake up and Reed finds some aluminum-lead alloy balls at the crime scene, which is apparently only something that can be made in zero gravity [01:49 AM] Wack'd: They leave their kids with the cops because there's another crime happening imminently [01:50 AM] Wack'd: Reed manages to apprehend one of the crooks, which means its TIME FOR BACKSTORY [01:51 AM] maxwellelvis: This I gotta hear [01:51 AM] Wack'd: The leader, Archie, was "never a good 'bo", which I assume means "hobo"? Life on the road wasn't good enough for him and he turned his friends into a gang of criminals [01:52 AM] Wack'd: They found this big blue lady, who they call Spinnerette, in a junkyard, and Archie figured out she was here looking for silver [01:52 AM] Wack'd: And, uh, convinced her to come do crimes with them. Somehow [01:53 AM] Wack'd: End of backstory [01:53 AM] Wack'd: Reed determines "It all fits somehow. It all makes sense. yes..." [01:53 AM] Wack'd: Which, uh, okay dude [01:54 AM] Bocaj: So that's why MJ has to be Spinneret in RYV. This big blue lady took the other spelling [01:55 AM] Wack'd: Ugh. Women are people, John
[01:56 AM] Wack'd: Reed has a universal translator and gets Sue to trap Spinnerette in an airtight bubble. Turns out the high oxygen content of the air made her "drunk" [01:57 AM] Wack'd: Which I guess was indicated by the alloy that can only exist in a vacuum that she was dropping everywhere? Somehow? [01:57 AM] Wack'd: I don't think the bit with the hobos explained anything [01:57 AM] maxwellelvis: Dammit Zhaan [01:57 AM] Bocaj: Giant woman giiiiiiant wooooooman [01:58 AM] Wack'd: She leads the Four back to her spaceship [01:59 AM] Wack'd: You'd think if they were all identical the men wouldn't be so wide and maybe would also have boobs but uh okay
[02:00 AM] Wack'd: Anyway Reed makes a bunch of other wild deductions to make this story make sense and then the aliens leave [02:01 AM] Bocaj: Reed: -wild deductions- liens: "Ugh lets get out of here" [02:01 AM] Wack'd: Bryne was on a roll for a while but they can't all be winners, I guess [02:02 AM] Wack'd: If you're curious: the alloy was her trying to pay for the stuff she stole, she went for silver because she confused it with indium which can repair solar cells, she has dizziness powers because her job is to prevent vertigo in weightlessness [02:02 AM] Wack'd: And, uh, she was so cool hanging out with humans because coming from a race of clones she didn't notice they looked different [02:02 AM] Wack'd: Somehow [02:02 AM] Wack'd: Whatever [02:03 AM] Wack'd: I'm gonna do the next issue because I wanna get to the Frankie Raye stuff

Divine Principle – “any character would have sufficed to fill the role of ‘messiah’”
Many ‘messiahs’ have taught variations of the Divine Principle in Korea.
Kim Baek-moon 金百文 taught it from the early 1940s, and was the source of many of Moon’s ideas. Kim developed the ‘parallels of history’ which culminated in the year of his birth, 1917.
Kim Baek-moon talked about “sexual union with God”
_________________________________________
Chong Deuk-eun 丁得恩 taught 17 ideas in the mid 1940s that were integrated into Moon’s Divine Principle. She called herself Holy Mother, and had developed a theology to demonstrate that she was a new female messiah. She was over 20 years older than Moon, and had developed her ideas well before meeting him. She taught the four position foundation, the failure of Abraham, etc., many years before Moon. She practised pikareum and described it as “Transmission of the holy blood”. At the end of her book, The Principles of Life, she emphasized the restoration of Eden. LINK

Here are examples of four men and one woman who were Unification Church members, or studied the Divine Principle, and have then promoted themselves as messiahs or gurus:
Jung Myong-suk (or Jeong Myeong-seok) 鄭明析 – the South Korean cult known as Setsuri, JMS, Jesus Morning Star, or Providence. LINK
Jeong Myeong-seok, above. Following accusations against him by South Korean police of rape, fraud and embezzlement, Jeong fled the country in 1999 and lived as a fugitive in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China before being arrested by Chinese police in May 2007. In April 2009, the Supreme court of South Korea sentenced Jeong Myeong-seok to 10 years in jail. LINK

Lee Il-chi 一指 (born Lee Seung-heun 李承憲 ) – Dahn Yoga LINK
Dahn is the Korean for “energy”
“During the day time, Lee attended college, and … studied with Unification Church’s Divine Principle study group looking for answers in the bible.” (“Dahn Hak” written by Lee Il-chi, page 199)
From www.freedomofmind.com: “While I was seeking Tao at Moak mountain, I attended Unification Church. … I opened up a Unification Church Il-Wha spring water franchise, but it failed so I had to sell my house.
…Lee first opened his eyes to the enlightenment in 1980. According to Dahn World, President Lee achieved his “Great Connection with the Heaven” on July 15th 1980 at Moak Mountain behind his wife Sim JourngSook’s birth home.”
[similar to Moon’s 1936 ‘revelation from Jesus’ myth]
“Lee reportedly had help from Hwa-young Moon, a Korean woman who joined Dahn in the late 1980s and whipped [the theology] into shape; she knew a good deal about the enlightenment trade, having grown up in the “Moonies,” the Unification Church.” (Rolling Stone magazine, 2010 LINK)
In 1980 Lee changed his name from 李承憲, Lee Seung-heun to Lee Ilchi 李一指. Ilchi means “finger pointing to the truth.” [Moon changed his name from Moon Yong Myung to Moon Sun Myung. Yong means dragon.]
Lee left two sons and his wife. [Moon left his first wife, Choi Seon-gil, and infant son in 1946. (ref. Michael Breen, Sun Myung Moon, the early years) Hee-jin Moon was born on August 17, 1955 in Tokyo. He was the son of Kim Myung-hee and Moon Sun Myung who married on June 30, 1955. Moon has acknowledged he is Hee-jin’s father. However, Moon never gave any financial support for his wife or for his son during their four year exile in Japan.]
In 2008, Dahn settled a lawsuit for an undisclosed sum when a college professor named Julia Siverls died of dehydration while hiking a Sedona mountain, allegedly lugging 25 pounds of rocks in her backpack. LINK
The Scary Yoga Obsession – A Glamour exclusive LINK
Thousands of young women have turned to the popular Dahn Yoga practice, and many say they love it. But now some former members are making shocking charges of greed, psychological manipulation and sexual assault. Who’s right?
… A few months later Jade attended a Shimsung workshop led by a high-level Dahn trainer and staffed by Dahn masters. These workshops, according to Jade and some of the other plaintiffs in the suit, take on the air of group therapy, with participants sharing their deepest, darkest insecurities with a roomful of strangers. Masters are quick to offer a box of tissues or a supportive embrace during emotional moments. At the end of the workshop, the lights dim, loud drumming music is turned on and the participants chant, weep and shout, “Who am I? What do I want?” Lucie remembers that some people walked out midworkshop, unnerved, but she and others felt as if their hearts had opened.
Recalls Lucie, “It felt like you were falling in love, only much bigger, because you weren’t just falling in love with a person, but with a community, a practice and a lifestyle, all in one. It was everything. I felt like the luckiest person in the world.”Cult experts call that lavish attention “love bombing,” a common recruitment technique. “As social beings, we respond well to people who make us feel welcome and secure,” notes Janja Lalich, Ph.D., a professor of sociology at California State University, Chico, and a cult expert. “Love bombing also tends to make the person feel more obligated to comply with requests from the group—requests to come back again, to give more, to bring friends and so forth.” The technique doesn’t work on everyone, which may explain why many people can practice Dahn Yoga without being consumed by it. “Dahn is especially appealing to anyone who is anxious, vulnerable or struggling with personal issues like a breakup or questions about career direction,” says cult expert Szimhart.
Six months into her Dahn experience, Lucie dropped out of college to dedicate herself completely to Ilchi Lee’s “vision” of spreading the word about Dahn Yoga. When her MIT tuition refund check came, she cashed it to pay for a course at Dahn’s National Retreat Center in Sedona, Arizona. “You feel good when you write the check or swipe your card,” says Lucie. “Like you just bought a present for your soul.”…
… Lucie now directs a ski school in New Hampshire and has paid off the debt she accrued while at Dahn. One good thing she says has come from her ordeal is a “beautiful friendship” with Jade, Liza and Nina. “We’re healing together,” says Lucie. While they say they may never see a penny—or an apology—from Dahn, they hope their complaint will save others. “The women who become sabumnims are incredible people; they are so smart and passionate and have so much to contribute to the world,” Lucie says. “Ilchi Lee’s bank account is not a cause worthy of all they have to offer.”
Catherine Elton is a journalist in Boston.
It is worth reading some of the comments under this Glamour article.

David Jang – LINK Christianity Today September 2012, Vol. 56, No. 8, Pg 36, “The Second Coming Christ Controversy”
… The details of Jang’s early life are in question, and multiple efforts to contact him for this story’s publication were unsuccessful. Critics in Korea, Japan, and China say he was involved in Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church. They point to his appearance in a 1989 student handbook for Moon’s Sung Hwa Theological Seminary as an assistant professor of theology, teaching systematic theology and Unification theology. They also cite a 2002 history of Sun Moon University praising him for helping to fund the school.
… But according to several sources with experience in Jang-associated organizations and communities, many members of the movement believed that the key event in Jang’s early missionary endeavors is not in his résumé—nor, indeed, in any written source. It was believed, these sources said, that in or around 1992, early follower Borah Lin told Jang that she believed he was the “Second Coming Christ”—not Jesus Christ himself, but rather a new messianic figure that would complete Jesus’ earthly mission. According to several former members, Lin became an important spiritual figure in Jang’s closest circles. Documents from teaching sessions indicate that Jang and his followers look to October 30, 1992—Jang’s 43rd birthday—as the precise date of the start of their own movement. Beyond that, affiliated groups including Apostolos Campus Ministries and Olivet University look to 1992 as the year of their founding.
… The basic content of these messages, both as contained in the notes and as described by former members, bears similarities to the teachings of Sun Myung Moon—that Jesus’ work was left unfinished and in need of another "Christ” to complete it. Daniel 12 records a notoriously ambiguous prophecy that refers to 1,260 days (“a time, times and half a time”), “1,290 days,” and then finally to “1,335 days.” The 1,260 days, the notes say, finished when Jesus was born, and the 1,290 days were completed when Jesus began to preach and teach publicly at 30 years of age (1,260 + 30 = 1,290). His three-year public ministry, they say, advanced the prophecy of 1,290 days to 1,293 days, but because the Cross cut his mission short, Jesus did not fulfill the prophecy of the 1,335 days. There is thus a remaining gap of some 42 “days,” which were said to symbolize 42 years. Multiple sources said that this 42-year gap was believed to have been fulfilled by Jang.
The lessons also taught a doctrine of “three Israels.” The first was a national Israel, the second was composed of Christians, and the third was constituted by the movement Jang had founded. The 144,000 of Revelation 7 was said to refer to this “third Israel,” and the Lamb who redeemed them was said to be “not Jesus, but the Christ of the Second Coming.”
Closely associated with this idea of Jang’s followers as the “third Israel” is a distinction between the “gospel of parables” that Jesus taught and the “eternal gospel” delivered to Jang. One of the lessons said, “Jesus speaks in parables to preach to us, but to the new era, the gospel will be explained more clearly, that is, the everlasting Gospel.” This “everlasting Gospel” will be proclaimed by the Second Coming Christ.
