One of my favorite themes Midst is exploring is what it means for a person to become an idol, a symbol. How they and the narrative deal with that is FASCINATING.
Obviously we have Lark. Clara Mire was shoved into her symbol at a very young ageâ she became the poster child for Caneum, the boogeyman under Trusteeâs beds, the universal villain. She has spent her entire life running from that symbol, adopting an alias and jumping from place to place. But her tragedy is that in running from her symbol, she has had to partially become it. Lark is TERRIFYING, and leverages that all the time, against Fuze, Phineas, even Tzila. Lark became dangerous to run from her symbol of Dangerous.
Then we have our buddy Tripotentiary Moc Weepe. Upon his transformation, he becomes the symbol of the Trust. He literally and figuratively makes the Trust translucent to show off its diseased, rotting insides. He is the true Trust, inside and out. No wonder everyone hates him.
Jonas Spahr is forced to be this golden idolâ donât show weakness, put on a media-ready smile, not a hair out of place and itâs showtime. He groomed to be this way like one of Costiganâs plants, and sheâs snipped away all of his natural humanities. He is golden and perfect at the cost of his personhood, and itâs killing him.
Contrast that against Phineas Thatch. Phineas tries to become that golden idol, Spahr tries to cull his imperfections, but it doesnât stick. Phineas is too messy, too human, he canât become the untouchable symbol. So heâs rejected and abandoned by his idolatristic society.
I think even Hieronymous Loxlee could count as a symbolâ if Weepe is the Trust, Harryâs the Breach. Secretive, in disguise, hidden in plain sight. Itâs a heavy burden to carry though, causing him to have to make decisions as a symbol rather than as a person. He needs to maintain the Breach above his own personal relationshipsâdrop the moon on Midst if it saves the Breach, even if it dooms his loved ones and his own daughter. He canât afford to be a person, he has to be the symbol.
But then Midst episode 15: Breach comes and says theyâre just people. Lark is just an old woman. Jonas Spahr is just a man. Itâs a clash of these various symbols and ideologies and inflated idols but theyâre all flesh and blood that can die in an explosion. Anyways

I love that Hieronymous in Trustfall is mostly providing tension relief. He's having the worst day of his life but in the funniest way. His contributions to the episode in the field of much needed levity are duly recognized and deeply appreciated. Thank you for your service, Mr. Loxlee. đ«Ą

After relistening to Midst 03x16, i genuinely find it so funny how we learn that Hieronymous Loxlee, the fucking head of the Breach, is absolutely and utterly helpless when it comes to handling stressful situations. When stuff went to shit he just completely lost it. He just got hit with a massive panic attack and fully stopped functionning. HOW THE HELL DID THIS MAN SPEND YEARS LEADING A SECRET ORGANISATION AND HIDING HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE FROM THE WHOLE ABSOLUTELY MILITARISED SOCIETY, INCLUDING HIS OWN WIFE???

it's so awesome that hieronymous was willing to risk destroying midst -- where sherman and tzila and saskia and lark were/are -- for the breach but is totally opposed to causing any real damage or chaos to the HL itself, where he lives, where he's built a life, where he's happily married. already uprooted himself and destroyed his life and left everyone he loves once! maybe doesn't want to do it again! maybe that's got much more to do with it than being worried about hurting people!

Midst for... Halloween? (or cosplay in general)
Hello! I'd be willing to work with anyone in the NYC metro area who is interested in embodying a Midst character.
I have a workshop! Raw materials! Space to work with weird and stinky glues and materials! LEDs and circuit boards!
Message me and we can meet up irl and talk about your idea. We'll get the videogame armor, however stupid, to work.
My current project is to make a "levitated" shard of Midst-cosmos mica... will post pictures as work progresses.

If Saskia had a gun the conversation with Hieronymous would have been a lot shorter. I think Saskia should have a gun.

Before Season 3 comes out...
I might as well write the predictions/theories I had back in season 1. I doubt most of them will come true, but if nothing else, this will be a good reference point to look back on; see where my headspace was at, that sort of thing
-Imelda and Atticus were working in cahoots from the beginning
-Hieronymous Loxlee was responsible for the moon explosion
-The acquisition of Midst was/is for the purpose of expanding the Trust into the fold
-There is something sinister going on with Loxlee lights. The Trust is experimenting with ways to expand their control into the fold for a purpose yet unknown. (More Tearror weaponry, like the fold grenade back in s1e17?!!)
-The Trust has access/knowledge of the prophecy abilities of the fold (Supported in s2e19; Lark's mom was/is working for the Trust, and had even stronger fortune-telling powers) and are using it for some larger plot. (Possibly connected with the death of Max Loxlee)
-Before the end of the series, Imogen Loxlee will be assassinated
-Moc Weepe is related to Kozma Laszlo
-Saskia will become the new mayor of Midst (probably won't happen, but it SHOULD)
-The conversion rates of Valor were deliberately tampered with behind the scenes to prevent Phineas from breaking even (the media was sent, meaning it was supposed to happen); all in an effort for Hieronymous to get control of Phineas.
-Phineas has been crushing on Jonas Spahr for a really long time. By the end of the series, he will confess his feelings for Jonas. (I'm willing to make a blood sacrifice if it means they have a hug by the end of the series. They need it.)

Two head-cannons:
I think throughout their relationship, Jonas saw Phineas as his equal, but obligated to treat him as his subordinate. Phineas has only ever seen Jonas as a god-like figure until he was abandoned. Yes, not healthy, but what other relationship does their job and the Trust allow for? If Jonas wanted the best for Phineas, making him his second makes sense.
Another part of me feels like they've been intimate before, but of course The Trust comes before all. Which makes the betrayal so much worse. I like to believe their relationship was close before Stationary Hill, but we'll never know. đ
#you're my person was said before s3ep16#phineas thatch#jonas spahr#jonas x phineas#midst podcast#just wanted more depth in their relationship#also a Sherman Guthrie and Hieronymous Loxlee backstory would be greatly appreciated

please enjoy my first midst fanart, in which I try to depict the complicated family dynamics centered around Sherman and Tzila Guthrie
EDIT: too saskia-pilled, forgot that shermanâs name also starts with âSâ, completely misinterpreted the s3e11 appendix as a result. pls disregard the Saskia/Lark line.
#the appendix revelation that lark and saskia ALSO had a flirty thing going on threw me for a LOOP#tzila guthrie#sherman guthrie#hieronymous loxlee#imogen loxlee#saskia del norma#midst podcast#lark midst#eve watches midst#eveâs art
