Abe no Seimei and the Yumiya Dancer
Interesting session of Onmyodo today. Abe no Seimei ran into a sneaky Onji no Kitsune which cursed him, limiting his Explore options. Soon after, he met a noble (Prince Ishitsukuri) who was basically obsessed with wealth and could not even survive another day of the journey! In the mountains, Abe next met a Annui Huntress, who traveled with him, avoiding yokai of all types, until they encountered and defeated the boulder-like spirit Yonaki Ishi. After traveling down a 3-tiered waterfall, they met a beautiful Yumiya Dancer!
However, the dreadful Hiderigami wiped out most of the group, leaving only the Dancer to carry on. She arrived in the realm of a Tatsu, and sadly died by a lonely tree.
Final Score: 7/2/1/0

The hiderigami is a yōkai from Japanese folklore. Depicted as a humanoid covered in hair, with one eye, one arm and one leg, it is uniformly female. Despite its lack of limbs, it can run as fast as the wind.
The hiderigami is reclusive, living deep in the mountains. When they do travel near human civilisation, they cause terrible droughts, drying the ground and preventing rain. Despite this, it is said that a hiderigami can be killed by throwing it in the toilet.

Psammead
Image © Wayne Barlowe
[Hey, a monster Barlowe illustrated from a book I’ve actually read! Of course, I last read Five Children and It when I was in single digits, but still. There have been a lot of filmed adaptations and spinoffs, but none of them have the psammead actually look like it does in the book. Most of them go for a more ET ugly-cute vibe, and all of them cut out the eyestalks, which is what I remember most vividly from my childhood.
Picking a CR for the psammead was somewhat of a challenge. In the book, there’s zero indication that It is a combatant, but creatures that can grant wishes, no matter how temporary, are typically mid-to-high CR. Although I toyed with giving It studied combat, the image of It slitting throats with its claws would probably make E. Nesbitt roll over in her grave. Instead, I took a page from the nereid’s book and gave it a powerful summoning ability. In the original, It talks about how he used to grant wishes to dinosaurs, which usually entailed food, so that seemed thematically more appropriate.]
Psammead CR 8 LN Fey This small strange creature is roughly mammalian, with fur and whiskers. It has eyes set on long, mobile stalks and oversized, bat like ears. Its body is pot-bellied, with long limbs—the arms are somewhat longer than the legs.
Psammeads are also called “sand fairies”, but their appearance is rather startlingly different from more traditional fairies. They are ancient, able to hibernate for literally millions of years beneath the sand. Their primary pastime is granting wishes, which they do with the full knowledge that such effects are temporary. When granting wishes, a psammead swells up like a balloon, as their tiny bodies are not used to containing such magical power. Psammeads usually use their wish-granting abilities in order to teach didactic lessons, and are known to twist the wishes in an uncharitable direction in order to achieve these goals. As they are immune to magical mind control and quite stubborn regardless, attempting to coerce a psammead into granting a wish it doesn’t want to is a fool’s errand.
A psammead has extraordinarily keen senses, and can use a combination of vibrations, echolocation and scent to detect almost all foes. Psammeads are physically weak, but magically strong, and avoid combat whenever possible. If enemies persist in pursuing them, a psammead will summon primeval beasts and earth elementals to defend itself.
Although they are commonly found on beaches, psammeads hate water. They are vulnerable to cold and prone to hypothermia when getting wet, and so stay well above the high tide line. Psammeads are happier in deserts, where they may socialize with other desert fey such as hiderigami. They date back to an era when mammals laid eggs as a matter of course, and do so on the rare occasions they see fit to reproduce. Psammeads tend to a friendly, but somewhat condescending, attitude, and prefer the company of children to adults and solitude to either.
Psammead CR 8 XP 4,800 LN Tiny fey Init +8; Senses blindsight 30 ft., low-light vision, Perception +18, tremorsense 60 ft. A psammead only loses this ability if it is helpless. Primeval Summoning (Ex) A psammead draws its summoned creatures from a special list. With its spell-like abilities, it can summon a CR 5 or 6 elemental, dinosaur or other prehistoric animal, 1d3 CR 3 or 4 elementals, dinosaurs or other prehistoric animals, and 1d4+1 CR 2 or lower elementals, dinosaurs or other prehistoric animals. Elemental summoned in this fashion must have the earth subtype. Temporary Wish (Sp) Up to three times per day, a psammead can grant a wish for another creature (it cannot make wishes for itself). This functions as a wish spell, except that any objects or effects directly created by the wish disappear at the next sunset. For example, if a mortal wishes for a magic sword, the sword disappears at sunset, but anyone killed by that sword does not return to life. If any spell effects are generated by one of these wishes, the save DC is 22. This is treated as an 8th level spell.

His only daughter, Sakura, is forced to leave the village in search of help for her Father, for her people.
There is a voice on the wind that whispers promises in her ears. Caresses of sand dancing on the wind guide her to sanctuary...to salvation and offer her an ultimatum.

More yokai and their descriptions from left to right. Tanuki A Tanuki is a shape-shifting yokai that resembles a raccoon dog. They are known to be mischievous and joyous but can also be gullible and shy. One of their biggest characteristics are their magical expanding scrotums. I knew it would only be a matter of time before I had to draw this critter. They actually remind me of my trip to Japan where I saw statues of them everywhere, so I thought it might be fun to include them here! 😊 Kamaitachi Kamaitachi are often found in the Kōshin'etsu region. They look like weasels with sickles for claws and ride on whirlwinds. Hiderigami This yokai is a funny-looking hairy humanoid who only has a single eye, arm and leg. They live deep in the mountains and exert so much heat that everywhere it stands, its surroundings will dry up. The best way to dispose of one is by throwing them into a body of water. This yokai is also known as the ‘God of Drought’ and is exclusively female! Gagoze Gagoze is a ghost that haunted the temple Gangō-ji many centuries ago. He used to devour young children at night but was eventually caught. He takes on the appearance of a hideous old man dressed in monks’ clothes and crawls on all fours.

If you're looking for new youkai to draw, why not hiderigami?
I’m trying to revive this style again, haha! Hiderigami scare me since I can’t take heat so well 😅 Their description is a little close to some iterations of Ippon Datara. Then again the latter has two arms 🤔

When this pokemon has gotten its target on the wrong path, it changes the area around it, so the target can’t simply just turn around and walk back the way they came. When this pokemon shows itself, it's famous for wanting to give the people and pokemon it meets what seems like a gift (often food or money), only to laugh at the people or pokemon's expression once the illusion dissapears and its revealed that the gift was actually something useless like leafs or dirt. Unless a dragon type pokemon lives in or by the river, this pokemon is seen as the ruler of the lake. All three stages lures other pokemon and trainers close by mimicking the cry of baby pokemon, and the hair on their head is actually covered in poison. These pokemon are also known for growing and sowing their own food, and is very talented at treating their injured group members. Pokemon based on the Shinigami, ghost type. The building/rooms are a cross between old fashioned temples, palaces and shrines. Almost all of the trees on the island has Shimenawa/Enclosing Rope around it, with Shide/Vertical Paper hanging from the rope, and Ema/Wooden Plaques and Furin/Wind Chimes (made with glass with flowers painted on them, and a string tied to some wood with a small glass sylinder and a piece of paper at the end that goes through it) hanging from the branches of the trees. The walls outside the building as well as the walls inside of the lobby is filled with white masks with red markings, each shaped like the head of a pokemon. Trainers can buy lucky charms on the island before facing the elite 4 and champion. Each lucky charm grant a different thing, like not getting effected by abilities, not getting effected by status conditions, recieving better aim and not for not fainting as fast. Several groups of guards patrol the sea and the sky regularly to prevent any trainers with seven or less badges to enter the island. A ship will take trainers strong enough to the island. The island is made to strongly resemble zen gardens, to help calm the trainers and help them find their inner strenght before the battles. "Amaterasu"’s room has a old scroll on the furthest back wall with “fire” written on it in red ink, as well as a old time picture of the sun. "Ōwatatsumi/ Ryūjin"’s room has a old scroll on the furthest back wall with “power” written on it in black ink, as well as a old time picture of a all the dragon types in the region. In each of the 4 corners of the room, in all the elite 4 members and the champion’s room, is a small shrine to each of the legendaries. Small bowls containing food can often be found on the shrines in honor of the legendary pokemon, which the elite 4 and champion pray to for guidence and for good luck in the fight, or for a challenger worthy/strong enough for them. The elite 4 members and the champion's room also have a scroll on one of the walls with pictures of their life on it, as well as a Byōbu/wind wall which hides the pathway leading to the next elite 4 members room and the doorway leading to the champion registration room. The path leading up to "Amaterasu"’s room is filled with Torri/shrine gates (red while the top and bottom are black), and as a sign of respect for the champion trainers are expected to bow before passing under each one. All these doorways also has a thick rope with a big bell attached to it on its right side, except for the bell leading the the champion registration room where the rope is attached to a log that must be pushed into the bell, giving it a different sound when the log hits it. It's customary for trainers to ring the bell using the rope, both to tell the trainer in the next room that they are coming their way, to signal the beginning of their challenge through the bell in the lobby, and to tell people in the lobby area that they have defeated the trainer/become the new champion in case of the bell on the doorway leading to the champion registration room. It is also customary for trainers to bow before going through the doorway as a sign of respect for the trainer they will be battling. The champion has a group of female trainers who looks out for and protects them. 10 of the trainers always stays at the island as long as the champion is there, challenging each trainer that comes through before they're allowed to challenge the elite 4 and the champion. Others go around the region, gathering information and bringing it back to their champion so that she always knows what's going on and where she might be needed.
