Alrighty, I'm in the process of renewing my Australian passport, so I've got opinions on this.
1. Passports should exist:
Passports are not only a super powerful piece of ID, but they're probably one of the least invasive ways to track movement. There are things the border folks need to know before letting you in the country; where have you been? Are you a citizen? Are you allowed in? (Yes, this is important because it includes protecting biosecurity and "hey, we don't want domestic abusers in Australia"). Coming out of covid, we should all know why tracking migration is important. Passports give the folks at the gate one document to check, with only the relevant info, rather than accessing your entire background.
2. Passports kinda need to expire:
Having to renew them every ten years makes sure that your information and photo are up to date. For them to function as the level of ID that they are, all of that shit needs to be accurate. Plus, some places won't let you in if you have a stamp from certain countries, so getting a fresh book means getting a clear slate
3. Renewal should be cheap and easy:
I'm renewing my passport pretty much entirely online. I got my photos from the post office, including a digital copy, and now I just gotta fill out the form. This is how easy the renewal should be; it pulls up my existing info, and I make any changes and upload the new photo. 5-10 minutes max.
The real problem is the price. It's going to cost me $300+ to renew my passport. That's fucking stupid. Getting a new passport is one thing; there's a lot of admin that goes into creating them. But a renewal? That shit should just be the cost of the actual book + like a $30 processing fee.
Freedom to roam is a human right, and there shouldn't be such a cost barrier.
passports…should not expire
