Neji explicitly states in the Chunin Exams that the fight between Ino and Sakura isn't anything noteworthy because they are two kunoichi. Tenten immediately corrects him and says that a good battle has nothing to do between being a man and a woman, and the conversation doesn't continue. I don't believe he carries this opinion for long, but I believe it was informed, like Shikamaru, by the women in his life. He greatly outperforms all of the konoha 11 as a shinobi which includes the kunoichi. However what informs this opinion the most is the most prominent woman figure in his life— which is Hinata.
May I ask where Hinata has ever hurt Neji? I don't recall any moment whatsoever where Hinata abuses and exploits Neji. What makes Neji and Hinata's relationship so complex is because even though Hinata has been nothing but kind to Neji, and I would never believe it was in her nature to hurt him, it doesn't erase the power she has over Neji, and that she can torture him at any moment. Hinata and Neji are very similar where they are emotionally driven people with kindhearted personalities and soft demeanors. However, Hinata had the privilege to continue acting this way, while Neji does not. We see this active change after he got branded with the seal, when before Neji was open and even happy to the idea of getting to know Hinata.
Hinata, the heir at the time, was another kunoichi he outperformed and their gap was even bigger than of Neji and the other kunoichis. Hinata had a personality that heavily contrasted her roles in Neji's life: his master and a fellow shinobi. Neji was shown time and time again that even though they wanted similar things (his freedom and to be a ninja), Hinata was given more favor than him because of her status, and that she can hurt or kill him with no punishment.
Hinata has a third role in Neji's life, though, and that is as his sister. It is stated multiple times that they were raised like siblings, and drifted apart for obvious reasons. Neji is the one that insists on keeping it formal while Hinata continues to call him her brother, and isn't dissuaded from doing that. I think it's a huge leap in judgement to go from that, to "Hinata is a slave owner that abuses and exploits Neji and treats him like a meat shield."
The only woman jonin he was in constant contact with was also Kurenai, who was Hinata's teacher. Neji was not set up to have good, fulfilling relationships with the women around him and I'm not surprised a young boy like him internalized that through misogyny.
That's obviously not the case now, though.
Being an heir to the main branch and being a shinobi are two completely separate matters. We know this because Hiashi is a shinobi. It was never explicitly stated that Hinata was allowed to become one because her status as an heir was transferred to Hanabi. And before that officially happened, you need to be in the academy for years in order to even become genin. Hiashi and Hizashi, both main and branch family members, were allowed to become shinobi, so it has no relation to their duties to the Hyuga clan.
While it's canon that Shikamaru "plays it safe" compared to other intelligent characters in Naruto, it is also acknowledged in canon that strategy in shogi is no different than strategy in a battle. Shikamaru's intellect is one of the biggest reasons he's considered a great shinobi, why he became chunin first and why he was one of the few that became jonin in their class. This is also one of the biggest reasons Neji respects the guy. Intelligence is a tool to shinobi, just like any jutsu or weapon. Nobody in Naruto has ever thought this was separate from Shikamaru's skillset as a ninja. It is one of his greatest traits as one.
So I don't think who will or wouldn't win against Shikamaru one on one in terms of raw strength...matters. Shinobi don't even operate solo, they, minimum, operate in teams of four. They are trained to work together, even with small, menial tasks like D-rank missions. However if we are measuring his capabilities based off one on one battles, we have seen him defeat shinobi who's jutsu and strength exceed his, and that is Kin and Temari. He very soundly (hah) defeats Kin with no room for argument, and even though he forfeits his battle with Temari, everyone was in agreement that if it were a real confrontation, Shikamaru had won. He had no prior preparation or knowledge on either of them and defeated them still. I would argue he also defeated Hidan on his own, but your argument was about the amount of preparation Shikamaru has for an opponent for one on one battles. One of Shikamaru's greatest assets is not only his thinking, but his flexible thinking. Time and time again we see him come up with new strategies on the spot, and even test to make sure they work.
Shikamaru's intelligence is what makes up for his lack of strength, and that shows exactly how smart he is. Multiple Hokages have trusted Shikamaru and listen to his advice, all the way from his chunin days. If by "book-smart" you mean academic, then the answer depends on if we're applying grades here. If this is based off grades, Shikamaru had terrible ones, only better than Naruto in his class. However, when he did take the time to participate, he had great scores. Neji, on the other hand, was called "the best rookie of his batch", and this label seems to require not just great practical skill, but great academics as well, since Sasuke is the other one with this nickname. So, funnily enough, Neji beats Shikamaru in this department.
As for your proposed scenarios for how Shikamaru and Neji would work under the pressure of their clans, a lot of what you brought up is just pure speculation and hypothetical. We have never been given any indication that this is how either the Naras or the Hyugas operate. While I agree that the Hyugas are conservative, there has been no suggestion, ever, that Neji would be forced into arranged marriages, especially with multiple wives. Not only have we never seen a polygamous relationship in Naruto, but just because there is no proof to contradict it, doesn't mean it's true. Hinata abusing Neji as a slave, Neji being forced to father multiple children from multiple women, would be just as true as, say, Orochimaru sexually assaults Sasuke. Just because there is the capability of it being true doesn't mean that it is. We don't know if the Hyugas prioritize numbers, I could also argue they wouldn't want that because it'd make keeping the secrets of the Byakugan to themselves harder which is their top priority. We also don't know if the Naras operate under the same main branch-side branch family system the Hyugas do, so we have no idea if Shikamaru has any duties to sire children. Sure, Yoshino would want him to, but that'd be because she personally would want grandchildren.
However, Shikamaru and Neji facing problems because of the Hyugas are a more likely than them facing problems because of the Naras, so I'll answer that. If the Hyugas were to demand something of Neji that'd get in the way of his and Shikamaru's relationship, what would Shikamaru do? I think he'd leave it up to Neji. While I don't think the Naras are anywhere like the Hyugas, I'd believe that Shikamaru would be more aware of how clan politics affect a person more than others because he himself is from one, with the head as his father no less. He also respects Neji's freedom to choose and his autonomy, so the decision is up to him. If Neji decides to end their relationship, he'll respect that. He wouldn't be the type to force Neji to do anything, which works well with Neji's need for independence and freedom. However, this is circumstantial, and I'd also believe if there was a situation where Shikamaru would disagree with Neji's choice to do what the Hyugas say. It really, really depends.
That's one way their relationship could subvert tropes. Usually, in a relationship like theirs, it'd be the one with more freedom and autonomy that would urge the one without it to fight for their relationship, to fight for their love. But I believe it would actually be more likely for Neji to be the one to do so for himself, and maybe even get angry that Shikamaru would assume or ever suggest he wouldn't.
However, again, even that is speculative. We really don't know. The Hyugas are conservative, but we don't know in what ways they are and aren't. We don't know if they'd make Neji do anything that'll sabotage his and Shikamaru's relationship. We don't even know if the Naras wouldn't do anything that would sabotage them either. It's all hypothetical.

{A Caged Bird's Fate} Part 1 - Introduction
Neji Survives AU! (y/n) becomes a part of the story in part two ;3
Author's Note: I dropped Shippuden when Neji died lmao so this fanfic is what I think one of the better alternatives to Neji's death was. This probably won't follow the timeline after the war very well, sorry about that.
Plot: During the 4th Shinobi World War, Hiashi Hyuga puts his life down to save Neji. Hiashi spends his last moments in Neji's arms and passes on the position of Hyuga clan leader to Neji, and our boi gets everything he deserves. <3
[ Gekko Hayate, the proctor of the Chunin Exams, said to Neji, "Even a bird who gets caught, once it learns how, will open the lid of its basket with its own beak. He won't give up, for he wants to fly freely in the sky again." ]
[ In Hizashi's letter to Neji, "Overcome your own fate, Neji. Fate is something you work out with your own hands." ]
[ Neji in response to Hizashi's letter, "...father... I have only one goal... I want to become stronger, so I won't lose to anyone." ]
~Enjoy, babes <3 spoken words are italicized btw

You know the scene...
Hinata jumped out in front of Naruto, shielding him from the wooden spears that Obito had sent flying through the air, targeting the boy while he was down. Neji had seen the situation from a distance and prepared to use his Rotation to stop the spears, until Uncle Hiashi had stopped them... with his own body. His bones cracking on impact sounded like thunder, and he violently fell onto the cold, hard ground with a loud thud, leaving the three teens shocked and unable to move as dreadful chaos continued to ensue around them.
The spears had pierced through his chest and torso, giving him only a few precious moments before his life would tragically end. Neji was the first to break free of his shocked state and rushed over to his uncle, kneeling down and placing Hiashi's upper body onto his lap, internally screaming at what had just happened.
"Hiashi sama! Why would you do this?" Neji frantically panted as his eyes scanned his uncle's face. He looked pained but... somehow relieved. "Why?!" Panic settled in as Neji realized that not only had a main family member sacrificed himself to protect a branch family member, but the clan leader himself had just done that, for him. He, who had always been so bitter and angry towards the main family.
Hiashi inhaled a couple shaky, broken breaths before speaking with a rasped voice, "There isn't much that I can do now, but if it is the fate of the branch family to die for the main family, then I want to defy that fate for you, just as my dear brother did for me." Neji listened quietly, eyes wider than ever and body frozen again in disbelief.
"I'm proud of you for making it this far Neji. I'm leaving the clan in your hands. Live, finish this war, and lead the clan. Bring about the changes you've always wanted." He fights the urge to groan in pain and instead smiles at his nephew, feeling inner peace for the first time in years knowing that he's finally repaid Hizashi for saving him on that awful day so long ago.
Hinata rushed over to the two men and kneeled next to her father, opposite to Neji, put one hand on Neji's shoulder and the other holding her father's hand as she lost control over the tears welling in her eyes. Hiashi then held his daughter's hands and told her how much he loved her and her younger sister, and that he's so, so proud of them both. Uttering maybe the sweetest words either of the cousins have heard.
Neji didn't know what to say, his thoughts raced as he sat in silence and stared dumbfoundedly at the person experiencing their last moments in his arms. His uncle had just sacrificed his life for him and wants him to take over leadership of the clan? That's impossible. Why? Why go this far for him? His uncle was never close with him like that, and yet he did this... for him.
As if reading Neji's mind, Hiashi spoke to him again, "Neji, your father taught me... to defy my fate... to protect my family. I knew what I was doing, and know that it is right." He smiled again as he felt himself start to lose consciousness, lungs stuttering in an attempt to get one more sentence out. "You know what to do. Take the fate of the branch family into your own hands, end the suffering, Neji." Hinata continued to cry and begged for him not to go while holding Hiashi's hands.
Neji finally spoke, "I will, Hiashi-sama." Neji felt that he should say more but nothing else would come out. Never in his life had he felt so vulnerable and helpless. Soon after, Hiashi took his last breaths while looking lovingly into Hinata's eyes and smiling at her, almost like he was saying, "It's going to be okay."
Hinata cried out as she held her now dead father's hands, feeling them going limp and watching his eyes become lifeless. She leaned down and hugged him one last time while Neji still held his corpse. He too, lost control over his emotions and sobbed alongside his cousin. They now shared a new bond, a very painful, memorable one.
"I'm sorry Hinata, I was too slow to act... I was supposed to protect you." He gasped for air as he tried to contain himself. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry...." Neji knew why Hiashi had put his life down for them, but he couldn't help the guilt that washed over him. This war was already so traumatizing but it was a slow process, Hiashi's sacrifice was completely uncalled for and left a different kind of emotional scar, especially considering that Neji had been trained to be prepared to die for others not the other way around. He never saw this coming.
Naruto had remained where he was sitting, still trying to process everything, but hearing the two Hyugas suddenly break out into loud sobs made him snap out of it and eventually stand back up. He slowly walked over to the scene, looking at the corpse of Hiashi and taking in what had just happened. He crouched down next to Hinata, carefully put his hands on her shoulders and softly muttered genuine words of comfort and encouragement to her despite still being slightly out of it.
It was in a split second that the realization of how much Hinata had cared about him dawned on him. She cared about him enough to die for him when he was idle and useless in the middle of a world war. He held back tears as he also realized that he reciprocated that care, but he couldn't get emotional when his comrades were in such distress. He owed them his life, and a new bond with his friends had been formed.
Hinata had just lost her father, and Neji his uncle. Naruto didn't overhear their conversation, but he understood the impact that this had on them both. He glanced over at Neji and moved over to be between the two cousins, placing a hand on each of their shoulders. He was eternally grateful to all three of the Hyugas, and their actions moved him beyond words. He felt like he could never do enough to make up for the events that unfolded on this grim day.
~see you in part two! this is my first time actually posting a fanfic so go easy on me :(

Tell us about Neji! Since when did you start liking him? What do you like most about him?
Anything works. I miss him so much my eyes become teary when I see him 🥺
[This is one hell of an amazing ask to receive ehe thank you very much fellow teary-eyed Neji lover.]
So I started watching the dub when it first aired, right at the start of the Waves arc, so it's been [checks calendar] about 16 years of being a fan of this series. 😨 I always liked Neji and considered him a favourite, but I really became a stan after joining the more gen fandom spaces, particularly the narutoforums which gave us such classic quotes as this:
For me, Neji is a very easy character to love. In fact, from 2016:
"definitely Neji. i like geniuses who get humbled lol. but his whole story, his tense + complicated + horrible relationship with his family, the bird metaphors, the hair, how he came out a nice guy after struggling in ~~the darkness~~ and was always quietly improving … yeah man it's been years but he'll never stop being my #1.
eta oh yeah and his team, team gai ftw"
So I guess past me sums it up fairly well. Also, please appreciate how Kishimoto read this thread on what would be your breaking point for the series and decided to ruin my life, in particular:
{screaming white woman.gif}
For my 2022 opinion ... Neji is a fascinating character. When we meet him, he's so angry, justifiably so, but it's hardly a healthy state to be in. He's drowning, and no one around him cares. His address of Hinata is superficially respectful but the actual tone of his words is anything but. He's probably learned a lesson or two on respect in his day, and he toys with the limits of what's possible. He pushes, and he pushes, in hopes of finding a little give. He could have made chunin based on skill alone, but he's clouded by his feelings AND puts a state secret on blast in front of a whole arena of people -- can you imagine the unbelievable levels of emotional stress he was under, to do that?
As I endeavour to write about Neji as much as possible, I once summed it up as such:
"Neji was an odd study of contrasts. He was quiet, yet never timid. He had more secrets than most, but never hesitated to spill the darkest things at the slightest provocation. Listening to him, Shikamaru had to wonder if it was because Neji had so few people in his life who would listen, he was scared to lose the chance to speak."
There's this raw vulnerability to his character which is always fun to see with otherwise 'cool guys', and it speaks to how big his heart is. Neji was mean for a few years as a traumatized kid lashing out and to this day people still act like he's particularly callous. He really isn't! One of the greatest Neji moments is this flashback of his apology to Lee, during Hiruzen's funeral:
Neji is aware that he was projecting his own beliefs onto Lee and strives to make it better. We assume Hiashi reached out to him after the exams, but Neji still meets him halfway, which is very big of him. He fights side-to-side with Hinata as 'equals'. Much like Gaara apologizing to his siblings for the first time in years after they carry him away from the Naruto fight, we see someone who has really no reason at all to be kind learning that they can be, and choosing to be.
I had fallen off the manga by the time Neji died; my friend called me up to break the news. I read the chapter and then lay down on my basement couch, and spent the rest of the day sobbing. I thought a lot during those hours about how Neji was fundamentally a good and kind person, but in a way he was living on borrowed time (as it's rumoured Kishimoto wanted to kill him and Choji in the Retrieval arc but decided not to.) To have someone so young -- and the older I get, the more his youth strikes me -- and kind exist in a liminal state ... it's a tragedy. His whole life is a tragedy, but he tried to make the best of it for what he could. That means more to me than I can ever properly communicate.
Also, he's a gay boy, and that's always a bonus in a character. ☝️
#not everyneji#neji hyuga#long post#ask#.thank you SO much for such a wonderful ask!#.i can talk about this series forever but neji forever x2#.and yes for the curious i've read the entire manga since ...

“(Hayate is a good proctor solely for a shy Hyuga heir it seems.)” YAS QUEEN! Call out the Hyuga clan. God, they’re fucking awful and Neji and the other second branch characters deserved better. Konoha ain’t shit. I love your re-readings! Are you re-writing them, btw? Just asking to know if I gotta re-read the ones I’ve read before. You’re reading everyone’s favourite characters to filth, even some of mine, and I’m loving it lol
Lmao.
No, I'm not rewriting them, those posts are simply comments while I re-read the manga, the only ones I'm re-writing as of now is the S//S post, the N//H post, and an analysis I made of Sakura's character and her relationships with Naruto, Sasuke and Ino.
You’re reading everyone’s favourite characters to filth, even some of mine, and I’m loving it lol
I'm not sure about reading them to filth, I'm literally pointing out things that are canonically mentioned. I'm not even exaggerating those readings -Kishimoto made a conscious decision when writing those stuff, fans choose to ignore them in order to protect their faves.
And I'll say this again, you can like a controversial character -that's not my issue. If people like Hinata, I have no problem, but denying core aspects of her character? Stating that she's not part of the Main Branch simply because Hiashi "treats her badly" is the same nonsense as saying "she isn't in love with Naruto''. She has no Caged Bird Seal as everyone does in the branch family, and FOUR jönins jumped down to protect her from Neji, when none of them moved a muscle to save anyone before. If that's not a privileged girl, I don't know what it is.
And listen, Hinata's anxiety/shyness is often presented as arguments to justify her inaction when it comes to her clan's enslavement; if those are valid enough arguments to excuse her deliberate ignorance on the matter (and yes, she ignores her clan's slavery on purpose because she's aware of what's going on, she even witnessed Hiashi torturing Hizashi and acknowledged the real reason why Neji was so mad at her), then those too are equally valid arguments to disregard her both as a possible leader (of her clan) and shinobi:
She can't be a jönin responsible for a squad if she's too anxious to give someone an order and live with the consequences -I'm not even bringing up her incapacity to fight or plan (some people simply doesn't like to be a ninja, Hinata clearly dislikes it, so stop forcing your fantasies on her and obliterating everything she canonically is), but her lack of commanding skills.
And since I’m here, I’ll like to point something out that I didn’t on my “Who’s the strongest kunoichi” post (which I’ll probably add): There’s a relatively constant occurrence in the pro-fandom of the most famous female characters (and no, I do not mean the usual use of pejorative terms like "misogynist" against those who do not match their perspectives, which is also very common); which is the naturalization of the argument "why is it difficult for you to accept that XXX character is inferior?" (of course I’m paraphrasing, but this line -or versions of this line- can be observed in many of their posts/comments).
This is often brought up with the sole purpose of diminishing the “anti”’s arguments against the pro-fan favorite character, or in favor of their chosen character, without committing to the debate and presenting true evidence of their claims (which, unlike those of the antis, are true until proven wrong and not the other way around). In lesser terms, they demand the performance of a specific attitude/introspection that they’re not willing to conduct themselves.

I do find the idea of Neji killing the whole Hyuuga clan and leaving Hinata and Hanabi alive but unable to have children (himself too) way too interesting to be left alone.
He definitely has the potential to do it, I don't think the seal would be of much help to the Main House if Neji were really intent on putting an end to their lives.
Also, I think, as sad as it would be, that a number of Branch would see it as their change to be finally free.
[ You see, his clansmen wouldn't be able to stop him if Neji chose to go Itachi (and Obito) on them. Not only did Neji become a jounin at a younger age than his generation, which shows how skilled he is in general, but he knows Main House techniques.
People tend to downplay how fucking powerful the techniques of the Main House are. I'm not talking about the techniques Neji uses regularly. I'm talking about the technique that killed the Head Shinobi of Kumogakure in one hit. I guarantee Neji knows that technique, since Hiashi took over his training after the Chuunin Exams. He probably already knew it through observation like the rest of his arsenal! Why wouldn't that be one of the first techniques the head of the clan teaches his heir? It could save their life! The technique likely requires a shit ton of precisely-aimed chakra, and that is why it isn't utilized in normal battle.
Imagine Neji outside of a Hyuuga home only two hours before dawn. (I just imagine most people would be asleep at like 04:00.) He's already taken care of the guards around the compound. All that's left is the rest of the Hyuuga. Utilizing his byakugan, he can see there is a family of four inside, all old enough to register a threat and scream. The parents are still awake, but, thankfully, the children are fast asleep. It's an odd case on the Hyuuga compound, as they're a traditional lot that tend to rise with the sun. He enters the home quietly, unseen, and finds an opportunity when one spouse faces away from the other. So he doesn't have to expend precious chakra that he needs for Hiashi's household, he slices the first Hyuuga's throat, through at least one major artery and windpipe. They make a sickening gurgle of a wheeze. Their partner turns to see Neji, but, before they can react, he kills them with one thrust of chakra through their heart. They fall forward lifelessly, and Neji lowers them slowly to the ground so their children won't be awakened by the thud.
Neji would utilize quick and deadly techniques. There would be no fights, just efficient killing. Kunai would be his best friends that night. Along with his byakugan, there's no reason to believe he couldn't wield blades with chillingly deadly accuracy. He would also utilize his strength to suffocate those smaller than him that wouldn't be able to expend enough chakra to draw attention (the children).
It would be easy. The reason he doesn't normally fight the way he would kill his clan is because, if you imagine it, really let it play out in your head, it's the actions of a killer, not a Konoha shinobi. Yes, shinobi kill, but they do it with a level of honor (in Naruto). There's no honor in what he would do to his clan.
Neji would hope his Branch House brethren would see their deaths as freedom, but, deep down, he would kill them because they left the fight to a single child. They never helped him. They never stood up for themselves. It was all on Neji's shoulders. That's cruel.
Imagine how the child bride of a cult leader feels about the adult cultists who just allowed her to be taken by an adult man, even if they celebrated her as someone important to the cult. That's how Neji feels. Yes, the Branch House are victims, but they're guilty in their own right.
As for the sterilization, it's the kindest fate he would bestow upon his cousins. Normally, I would imagine the night as a slaughter of the entire Hyuuga clan, leaving Neji as the only surviving one. (Let's be real here. Let's be 100% honest. Hinata never argued about the seal with her father. All she was concerned about was proving herself and believing in whatever Naruto was doing at the time. Hanabi was still young at the time Neji died, so she was still a wildcard, still able to be influenced.) If he left his cousins alive, he would have to ensure all of them were sterile, because they would have the ability to carry on the Hyuuga clan. He could not risk any of them having children and carrying on that legacy of a slave house. They have the ability to activate his seal. If he killed their family, there would no telling how either of them would react. If he still had the ability to produce children, they could ensure he produced them. He would be under their control under threat of torture or death. Does he think his cousins would do that? Of course not. But why would he ever risk that?
In my future verse where Neji didn't die during the war and grew along with his generation, I headcanon him as completely sterile. Sans testes. Through his own actions. He destroyed his own testicles and excused it as an unfortunate injury he acquired during a mission. Because of his lack of testicles, he has to work twice as hard, as hard as a kunoichi trying to match the strength of a male shinobi, because his body no longer produces testosterone. It ensures he'll never develop like his generate did, almost feminizing him. (Since, for some reason, Kishimoto decided drastic effects of puberty continue well after the age of 18 in that universe. HOW DID THEY GET SO TALL?) It's a sacrifice he made after his generation started to become pregnant. Realizing it would soon be expected of him, he put a swift and painful end to that expectation. If there is even a possibility his children could be branded or raised with almost apathy about the branded house of the Hyuuga clan like his cousins, he will never have children. ]

Neji meeting a girl from a notably influential clan in Konoha (they own the hospital or something idk) all who aren't afraid to talk mad shit to hiashi and hyuga nobles (because her clan can't stand the seal policy the hyuga have and find it barbaric) and does it in like that subtle "double talk" that nobles do. Doesn't take hiashi's shit and isn't afraid to stare the man down in the eyes, but also may or may not tell hiashi to straight up kiss her ass if he threatens her for disrespecting him
a/n: OMG yes we love a legend who doesn’t take Hiashi’s bs! Bless you for this request. I get mad too, don’t you worry. AND YES DOUBLE TALK. LOVE. UGH! Nobody disrespects Neji in this house.
-The moment the truth of the Hyuga clan was revealed in public (by Neji at the chunin exams) you were beyond angry. It had explained so much about Neji and the others you had seen come in and out of the hospital. Ever since you were young there seemed something very off about the clan. And now this confirmation begged the question: How could a leader do that to another member of their clan? And because of a manner of birth no less. Outrageous!
-Your clan had always been about healing and helping others, it was drummed into you at a young age since it was your clan who was in charge of the hospital. Violence among clan ranks seemed heinous at that point, something from the days of old before the village formed. So the second Neji lost the match and was carted away you made a point to march back to the medical bay and find out what was what. (You had only left to watch that match, there was no way you were missing Naruto and Neji fight).
-Once you got to room, you were about to slam open the door when you overheard voices. After a few moments of eaves dropping you recognised them a Hiashi and Neji. You frowned but didn’t interrupt. You made to walk away from the door but another part of you, the part that was concerned about Neji’s safety and not just interested in what would conspire in such a conversation between to individuals, stopped you.
-So, you leant against the wall next to the door frame, closed your eyes and listened to the conversation. You overhead bits about Neji’s father sacrificing himself but other parts came muffled. Then you heard reconciliation and that just didn’t seem enough to justify Hiashi’s actions. Torturing a child didn’t get you off that easily in your books. No way in hell were you letting this go.
-Footfalls echoed on the other side of the door indicating someone walking toward you. There was no point in hiding or moving, you weren’t afraid of being caught. When Hiashi opened the door and stepped through he noticed you immediately. A scowl found your face and a frown found his. Your stare held true even as he shut the door. ‘What business do you have here?’ Hiashi asked, finally. You piercing glare didn’t waver. ‘It’s my job to heal people, you know people like the branch members who are harmed by head households for the sake of tradition.’
-Hiashi didn’t so much as flinch but you could tell by his eyes that he didn’t take your words lightly. He sized you up with a glance then turned to walk away. ‘I’d watch your tongue around elders.’ He said, flatly. You scoffed. ‘I always choose my words carefully around those deserving of respect.’ He paused for a moment but did not turn around. Then as if nothing happened he walked away.
-When you took a moment to collect yourself you went into Neji’s room and closed the door behind you. Neji was sitting there with a stunned expression on his face, clearly having overhead your conversation with Hiashi. You didn’t bother explaining or standing up for you behaviour, instead you went over and examined him. ‘Are you feeling alright?’ You asked, checking over his cuts and bruises. ‘Fine.’ He replied, watching you carefully. A heavy silence fell between you that spoke more than words could.
-It wasn’t until you’d finish examining him that he finally asked, ‘Why did you do that?’ You met his eyes for the first time since entering the room. ‘Do what?’ You placed a hand on your hip. ‘Say such...’ He hesitated, ‘accusatory things.’ You smirked. ‘Was I wrong in my accusations?’ ‘Well not exactly but it doesn’t really seem your place.’ Neji wasn’t scolding you, no, he admired you but didn’t know how to be honest about it. He was ready to let it all go and here you were, an outsider telling Hiashi exactly what you thought. A small smile appeared on Neji’s lips.
-From that moment your bond with Neji cemented and you continued to speak your mind. For that he was grateful but there were times even he didn’t understand how you could be so straightforward with a clan leader. Still, he never stopped you. Sometimes it would even make him smile the most genuine smile you had even seen from him. That was reason enough alone to critique Hiashi, in an appropriate manner of course. (He could kiss your ass for all you cared.)

“Hiashi was such a horrible and abusive father for hinata!” is a bullshit lie made up by hinatafans to try and picture hinata as a victim, when hinata is the same privileged slave owner hiashi is.

Because in every universe, he is a problem
