I've been struggling to draw lately; so I've been working on character dynamics and head canons, doing research and deciding how I want to portray nations. I want to share some of my work but I'm struggling to pick where to start so this is the way my brain decides to try and solve the problem. LOL

they band together to hog them from everyone else. denmark is bouncing on the sofa just barely clinging onto his ability not to snatch, because nor and ice are locked in a tiebreak which has been going on for a full hour. he wants a turn so badly. nor and ice will deathmatch until they both starve to death or one of them wins, whichever is sooner.

who usually causes the fights?

norway. they both have low emotional intelligence but iceland is slightly more switched on (he's younger, he has younger friends). one might say he's securely attached. norway is very avoidant-dismissive attachment: he causes fights by getting too clingy, but sometimes also for being too distant and cold.

who steals the others' clothes?

norway steals everyone's clothes. iceland wouldn't want to steal norway's clothes. he doesn't even really like borrowing stuff off norway because you can never be sure if it's been washed recently.

who eats all the good snacks before the other can get any?

neither - norway will guard the snacks vigilantly to make sure ice gets his share, and iceland isn't the greedy sort, he never takes more than his share. denmark, however...

which one gets the top bunk or bottom bunk?

iceland goes top bunk because he's ever so slightly shorter, and because norway doesn't like not being able to get to a door easily. nor also goes bottom bunk because he wakes up during the night a lot so it's easier to get out of bed and go for a wander without disturbing ice

who speaks up when the other asked for no pickles?

lmao we all know it's nor speaking up for ice. it's not even a shyness thing, ice just hates being difficult with service workers.

which one likes to go into the other's room, fart, and immediately leave?

shared behaviour. probably more iceland because he's the little brother and everyone knows little brothers are the scum of the earth.

which one bails the other out of jail?

gonna say iceland bailing norway out of jail. norway's been arrested for snufkin-style crimes (trespass, vandalism, grand larceny). iceland doesn't get arrested, partly because he's not the type to break the law and partly because there's like 4 police officers in iceland and he knows them all by name

which one won't stop repeating an embarrassing story about their sibling as a child?

norway norway norway. not just one embarrassing story but multiple embarrassing stories. constantly. you ever heard the phrase, "to dine out on a good story" meaning it's a story you can tell loads of people over dinner? nor has a six course banquet about ice's childhood stories.

who do they each think the favourite child is?

they both know it's denmark.

that said, i did have a great story going with my friend anna (bruh idk what your tumblr is anymore, lmk so i can tag you) where ancient scandinavia (i.e. norway's mum) and he had a really fractious but interesting relationship. he always thought he was her least favourite but it was because she recognised he could use magic like her and wanted to make him tough. it was such a great story ugh, i should write a fic about it

29. ...as a promise.

(this is a lil Windswept-verse piece, I hope that's ok!) ----

"I mean, if they offer you a promotion you should take it," Arthur said. "No reason not to, I can't imagine you spent your childhood dreaming of a one bedroom apartment in Boston of all places." He said 'apartment' with an exaggerated imitation of an American accent that didn't seem to know what region it was from. Arthur's tone was fairly casual, but the way he'd cut into his mille-feuille and pushed it around the plate and even disassembled part of it, but had not eaten any of it, suggested that he might not feel as calm as he was trying to look. Francis watched as Arthur moved to take another sip of his tea, but found the cup empty. His cheeks turned red in a way that was terribly endearing, god damn him, and Francis couldn't help but smirk just a little as he took the pot to refill his cup.

"You're awfully transparent," he said, earning himself quite the scowl from his partner.

...Well. Maybe partner was overstating it? That did seem to be at the core of their little discussion, here. Francis had a very big overseas meeting coming up with a few members of management several tiers higher than his own direct supervisor, but there was reason to believe that, should things go well, he might be recalled from Boston to return to the home office in Paris...

While Francis was apparently very efficiently climbing the corporate ladder, Arthur was currently eyebrows deep in the arduous process of writing his doctoral thesis on the French and Indian War (a rather inelegant name, Francis often liked pointing out, usually following up with a comment about how it wasn't even really its own war, as it was really just part of the Seven Years' War, and then sitting back and letting Arthur go off on a tangent about the subject).

This meant they were in very different stages in their lives. They'd been together for a year and a half at this point and had even signed a lease together (for the aforementioned apartment), but they weren't exactly married yet... Should Francis choose to take the possibly forthcoming promotion and return to France, there was very little possibility Arthur could join him given... everything, and frankly, neither of them were really cut out for a long-distance relationship.

Really, the prospects were looking rather bleak when put that way. Francis couldn't exactly blame Arthur in good conscience for being defeatist about it, especially given that the relationship he'd had just prior to dating Francis had ended rather catastrophically. He was a pessimist by nature, had plenty of personal experience to back it up, and here yet again was another gloomy storm on the horizon.

Francis couldn't fairly blame him for it, but he was going to anyway. Bleak prospects or not, who did Arthur think he was dealing with?

"Look, I don't expect you to put your life on hold for me, that's all," Arthur said. He crossed his arms over his chest and had set his jaw in what Francis presumed he thought was a respectably stoic expression, but it all had the effect of making him look like a sad, wet cat.

"I don't intend to," Francis said easily, "nor do I expect you to do it for me."

"Well there you go, then." Despite pretending to be fine with the whole thing, Arthur looked even more miserable, though it was clear he was really, really trying not to. "It'll work out well anyway, the lease is up in a few months as it is."

Francis hummed softly and leaned back a little in his chair, eyeing Arthur over the rim of his own cup. He was acting as if Francis had already broken up with him, and the way he looked, he was sure all the other patrons in this little cafe must have thought the same.

"Oh? Are you thinking of something else, then? A townhouse, maybe?"

Arthur rolled his eyes. "You've got no concept of what they pay students," he said. "No, I don't know, I'm sure there's someone else in the department who'll be looking for a place, we'll probably share a loft or something. That's what I was doing when I met you, after all."

"Mm, no, I'm too old for a loft or for flatmates," Francis said thoughtfully. "It's romantic when you're young but not so much now. If you're set on a new place when the lease is up, though, we can find something suitable. With a balcony, at least, I'm sick of having to go smoke in the parking lot."

Arthur was looking at him with an expression that seemed equally annoyed and hopeful. "What are you talking about? You're going back to Paris, remember?"

Francis put his cup aside, then reached across the table to take Arthur's hand in both of his. Arthur blushed to the tips of his ears when he did, something Francis always found immensely gratifying. "When did I say such a thing?" he asked. "You decided that."

"But..." Arthur floundered for a moment. "You said it. The meeting?"

"Yes, I have this meeting, and yes, I think they are going to offer me a promotion, but I'm not going to stay there. I'll come back."

"And what if they insist?" Arthur asked. He seemed to have a thing for looking for all the ways things could fall apart.

"Then I'll tell them I'll walk!" Francis said. "I'm sure you don't know because you've always been a student or working at a pub or a cafe or-- or what was the other one?"

"...Greggs," Arthur said sheepishly.

"Ugh, yes, that. Well, I'll tell you something," Francis continued, "if you make yourself invaluable, they'll give you what you want. And what I want is to stay here, with you, and so I'm going to."

"...You don't mean that," Arthur said, shaking his head. "Your flight leaves tomorrow, you'll get there and change your mind."

"Don't tell me what I mean!" Francis scoffed. Really, what an irritating man he'd chosen. "Why is it so hard to believe? I've put up with you and this city for more than a year now, if I wanted to go I would."

"Put up with me?" Arthur demanded. His cheeks were flushed again. "Look here, I'm not asking you to stay."

"Yes, you are," Francis shot back, leaning over the table to lean in very close. "I see right through you. I always have. You want me to stay, and I plan to."

Arthur looked as though he was about to argue, and Francis wasn't interested in hearing any more of it, so instead he leaned in and kissed him, still holding his hands in both of his.

When they broke, Arthur looked almost dazed and somehow redder, if it was possible.

"I'll be back in a week, promotion or not," Francis said, settling back into his seat with a smug look. "I promise you that."

Arthur nodded wordlessly after a moment, then picked up his fork to finally take a bite of the delicious treat he'd mangled in his nervousness. "...I'll hold you to it, then."
