Answered these already, but I figure why not do it again while also hitting two birds with one stone hehe

I think HWS Seborga is fascinating and definitely deserves a lot more attention than he gets! Micronations in general don't get enough love in this fandom, but I think Seborga is especially interesting because of the Schrodinger's box it's in; the whole claim to the Principality of Seborga's legitimacy is the idea that the principality was overlooked by Congress of Vienna and never actually in possession by the House of Savoy, meaning Seborga's incorporation into the Kingdom of Italy during unification exists in a legal twilight zone.

So Seborga's existence hinges on this, and imagine how that must feel for the personification himself! The micronation is all he has to hold on to in order to keep his existence sustained and alive-- and because the alternative possibility is just unthinkable, he has to throw all his hopes on this one historical anomaly.

To Seborga, he's more than just a small Italian village overlooking the Riveria; he's the forgotten child of the Ligures and Rome, the first and only Cistercian state (and even nowadays that Templar imagery is important to his sense of identity), a little principality forgotten by legislature and history who has only begun to remember himself again after a flower grower finds his papers. His whole existence nowadays is hinged on an uncertainty, clinging to the label of micronation because it's how the world sees him nowadays and not what he potentially once was and could be.

But he is alive, and it is enough. And so he smiles and waves at tourists and entertains their questions, and in his spare time he grows flowers and olives, and as he looks over the Riveria and thinks of his circumstance, he finds it wondrous that he's still alive at all.

He is alive, and for now, it is enough.

Oh can you write ukfrain? I thought like a love triangle (real one) and they're all too dumb to notice they're in love with each other. I do like Frain being very close and lot of PDA dispite them not saying and England feeling jealous because he/she isn't between them.

Dammit why was Isabella so pretty!

This was the simultaneous thought of more than one very gay women in the conference room as Spain flounced up to give her speech.

Spain in a suit could turn most women gay, let's be real here, but if they were already gay, that could be a small problem.

As she droned on about agriculture most people had tuned out and were busy doing various things, like being on their phones, irritating someone or staring at Isabella's hips, luckily for Isa, only 2 people were staring at her hips. But unluckily for her, it was Francene and Elizabeth, one was her best friend (and fuck buddy) and the other was her past rival (now occasional fuck buddy.) 

Now you could argue that  Francene and Isabella's relationship had long surpassed being just fuck buddies, looking after each other and cuddling in the rain, being there when the other was down, kissing eachther goodnight, while sleeping in the same bed.

Normal homie behaviour at its finest.

After that it was Francene, she gave an actually well delivered and structured speech about strikes and why they happen and how to prevent them to avoid major closures. Most people were listening and to some extent Isa and Elizabeth were too, but they were also getting occationally sidetracked by Francenes clothing choices. A very close fitting waistcoat that left little to imagination and even though the skirt reached the knee, it showed her stocking clad calves and if she stretched, parts of her thigh and it was really sending Elizabeth around the bend.

She knew that Francene was mostly occupied by Isabella, but she really wanted to be held dammit. Preferably by either or both of those 2.

When it was finally Elizabeth's turn to speak, she pointedly avoided looking at either of the two. After all she was not wearing anything exactly provocative and her bodily dimensions left a lot to be desired, so she wouldnt have to worry.

At least that's what she thought.

Her bin provocative clothing and her overall dimensions did nothing to stop the two romance nations imagining things that would have gotten them flogged in centuries past.

I mean Elizabeth has done it before, so why not again.

Elizabeth's presentation on urban and rural development was the end to the incredibly long meeting.

Most nations had agreed to go to the pub before going to their hotels and probably sleeping, though some noises occasionally said otherwise.

Elizabeth walked to the canteen, avoiding Isabella and Francene like the plague, even if that meant being around Julchen and Amelia, two women who had no idea what being quiet was.

Except today, they were mostly silent, only muttering to each other under their breaths.

After an infuriating 5 minutes she asked "What is wrong with you two, neither of you have said awesome or dude yet and you're being awfully quiet."

Julchen, being an absolute beast at covering up her tracks and 100% wanted to torture Elizabeth said "We were talking about how I'm pretty sure that Isa and Francene have a thing going on."

"Oh you think I dont know that? I hear ✨sounds✨" she said, quite disgruntled as you would imagine.

She looked over at the two who were being so sappy that she couldn't look away defo not imagining herself in some questionable positions .

Elizabeth stopped her beer while Julchen did as well, Amelia was being a pussy in the corner and drinking coke.

But a couple of beers later, everyone is understandably a bit tipsy and whilst Amelia was stuck with dragging a mooning Elizabeth and a very depressed Julchen out of the bar.

Amelia looked on in dismay as Elizabeth sort of walked (she wasn't stumbling but like still a bit wobbly) over to the very passionately making out duo in the back.

And her tongue being plied with a generous amount of liquid courage says "Can I join you?"

Der Hund, der unterwegs zu einem Stern war. It's the first book of Henning Mankell's Joel series and I highly recommed the books because I love reading them, especially now during the cold months

What’s your favourite movie you saw in theatres this year?

I loved Batman, but so many people are saying Batman so I'm going with Bullet Train. It was hilarious, I love this kind of funny, stupid, violent movies.

What do you usually wear?

Skinny jeans (low rise), t-shirt, + when it's colder a sweater on top or a long sleeved shirt underneath, trainers (British Knights "rocco" to be specific), hair tied up in a messy bun or ponytail depending on how long it is.

No, because when I was a child I didn't know the job I'm doing now exitst. Other than that I remember doing a workshop at school when I was like 17 where we should write something we want to be in 5 years on a piece of paper and everyone wrote about their jobs and I wrote "I want to be happy" and I have achieved that.

I am! Have been for more than 6 years now, can you believe? I do still have crushes too though.

I'd already be happy to finish some of my wips and get over myself and post them so that's my new years resolution too.

What’s something you’re currently obsessed with?

I'm still a little obsessed with Cyberpunk tbh. I ate up the game like starving man (because it was the perfect game for me to play) and loved the anime too (because omg trigger I'm on my knees). That and baking my own bread is still going strong!

What’s something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year?

I was very excited for all the conventions that finally happened again this year, but somehow... idk I'm not sure how to describe it. I had fun when I was there but I was exhausted after the first two I went to and then before the next one I just had no motivation. It's just not the same anymore. Maybe I need to convince more of my rl friends to cosplay with me so I have more will to work on things and be excited for them again.

What’s a hidden talent of yours?

I can overanalyse every piece of modern music by the standards of classical music because that was drilled into my brain. Idk if that counts as a talent? It's fun to do though.

Are you religious?    

I'm sorry, but I've been in a religious crisis for months and at the moment I do not know how to answer this.

What’s something you wish to have at this moment?

I'm a little hungry so something warm to eat for supper (that I do not have to cook myself) would be nice. And maybe some hot chocolate and a warm bath. Yeah that would be good.

Heta's eyes opened. She sat up quickly. Vul, who felt the sudden movement, rolled over. "Love, are you OK?" Tears started to well up in Heta's eyes. She looked over at Vul, and they fell down her face. She gasped as if she had no breath. Vul took her hand. "Deep breaths, Het. You've a bad drea–?" Heta cut Vul off, lunged into Vul's arms, and buried her face in Vul's fur. She nodded. Vul stroked the back of Heta's head. "Hey, you're gonna be OK. Remember, I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you," she whispered softly. Heta cried into Vul's fur. "Can I get you some tea? I think it will help calm you down. If you wanna talk about it, tea would be good for that." Vul laid her hands on Heta's back as she spoke. Heta, face obscured by fur, nodded. Vul smiled, picking her love up and holding her, like someone would hold a scared child. She slowly and gently left the bed, making sure the ride wouldn't be too bumpy for her girlfriend. They set off, on a quest to the kitchen for some herbal tea... and maybe some cookies were involved as well.

THE・Chonk Tie

We all know about Midoriya-kun's iconic tiny chonky tie. Horikoshi-sensei has already explained it away as Midoriya-kun just being bad at tying it. In Japanese he uses the word "ヘタ" (heta), meaning clumsy or unskilled.

But, just for the helluvit, I'm gonna speculate on this a bit. I think there's actually a ton of stuff packed into this tiny tie.

Midoriya-kun went to a middle school with a gakuran uniform so he likely never needed a tie. On top of that fandom likes to speculate that since his Dad isn't around, no one can actually show him how to do it. I can't disagree with Midoriya-kun just being a clumsy fashion disaster. It's a very straightforward explanation.

But in this age of tutorials and YouTube, part of me just can't let it go. And Midoriya-kun has friends now that would probably teach him if he asked. Heck, Mina-chan taught Midoriya-kun how to dance, and you're telling me she can't teach him how to tie his damn necktie???

But almost everytime we see this kid in a tie, it's always tied like that. In almost every illustration or sketch where Midoriya-kun is wearing a tie, even the gender bend one and random fun sketches posted to twitter, Horikoshi-sensei has him in some variation of this tie. He has been very meticulous about it and it's details like this that make me such a huge fan of Horikoshi-sensei.

(It's such a small detail, but it's one of my favorite parts about his design. I always see fans going on and on about his adorable face, freckles, green eyes, green curly hair... But no one talks about this damn tie!!! It's one of the best things about his design IMO. )

In fact, the only time we don't see this is the culture festival performance. That's the only time I've seen this kid with his tie on properly. Look at this perfectly tied nonsense right here!!!

(Granted, these costume ties do seem to be a bit shorter than the uniform ties. On Ochako-chan, Tsuyu-chan and Mina-chan, the ties seem even shorter.)

But assuming that he didn't get someone else to help him, or it wasn't already tied and ready to slip on (that's actually the likelier scenario, but, shhhhh!), then he actually tied that tie on properly. Considering all the practice, they had to have taught him how to tie the tie at some point.

But that said, if this kid KNOWS what he's doing, why is it that the chonk tie still lives?

(Back after the culture festival and even more glorious than before?!)

Consider that a normal tie you could get away with just loosening it and just re-wearing it, but this chub version has to be re-tied every day. So why does Midoriya-kun do it, if he knows how to tie it properly?

He does it on purpose.

In 2009, there was a trend among British uniformed school kids to tie their ties improperly as a form of rebellion.

Midoriya-kun's tie is actually called "the superfat style".

Odd coincidence or did Horikoshi-sensei make our boy a hidden rebel?

We all know Midoriya Izuku has a baby face with a hidden rebel side. And it must be noted that in Class 1-A, everyone else, except a certain gremlin child (yes, Bakugou-kun, I'm talking about you, now shut up, I'll get to you later), has a properly tied tie.

Midoriya-kun doesn't express his rebellious nature outwardly and seems to be in line with the stereotypical cooperative Japanese rule abiding citizen. But, despite his cherubic baby face and outwardly tame veneer, Midoriya Izuku is a known feral, law-breaking, quirkless hero society outlier. AND HE ALWAYS HAS BEEN.

All Might said I can't be a hero? Prove him wrong, win his quirk. Iida-kun's in trouble? Laws? What laws? Todoroki-kun looks sad? I'll just break some bones so he'll feel better. Villains are attacking, so I should go back to camp? Hard pass, there's a kid I need to save. What, Kacchan's in danger??! My arms are broken, but that's what I saved my legs for. All of Class 1-A doesn't want us to go save Kacchan? Well, just watch me and my worst yakuza impression ever as I wear this fake goatee, break curfew and sneak into a villain hideout packed with several noumu and one very scary AFO.

Just what part of Midoriya Izuku isn't a rebel?!

Going back to the prototype oneshot of Boku no Hero Academia, "Boku no Hero" Horikoshi-sensei re-used the main character Jack's design. This character was actually similar to Midoriya Izuku in a lot of ways. A quirkless salary man who wanted to be a hero and used support items to fight.

Horikoshi-sensei loves paying homage to his earlier works by reusing old character designs. Tenko, Snipe, Gang Orca, and more were recognizable concepts that found their way into Boku no Hero Academia. Considering Horikoshi-sensei's heavy emphasis on the theme of 'remembering one' s origins,' it really comes as no surprise the author does this himself. He has done that quite a lot before and it's not surprising at all.

(Considering he was a professional salary man in a suit, the chonk tie is even more of a visual symbol of the maverick nature of this character.)

What came as a surprise to me is that Midoriya-kun's prototype Akatani Mikumo actually didn't have this feature. Both he and Gougou Katsuki (Bakugou-kun's prototype) wore their ties properly?

Well, I guess it's close enough on proto-Bakugou, considering our Bakugou-kun lost his tie completely... (I said, shut up Bakugou-kun, I will talk about you NEXT! Geez, this brat).

So why did Horikoshi-sensei decide to ressurect the chonk tie? Remembering his origins? As an homage to Jack? Hidden rebel? Maverick thinker? Clumsy kid? Fashion disaster? Extremely successful iconic shounen protagonist design feature?

Or maybe, all of the above...?

Either way, Midoriya-kun just wouldn't be the same without his tiny tie. And I'm here for it.

30 days manga challenge

day 6. A Manga You’re Embarrassed About Liking

I’m not embarrassed of my taste... So I’ll twist the question into : A manga you love even if it’s objectively not that good

Rinjin 13-gou  (Neighbor No.13) !  By Santa Inoue (who happens to be Taiyou Matsumoto’s cousin by the way).

 It’s about a man with a split personality due to trauma, as he was heavily bullied as a child. He seeks revenge on his former bully, who is now his coworker and neighbor.

I’ve read Neighbor no.13 twice by now, and I genuinely enjoy it. Yet I’m still unsure if some of the things I love about it are actually intentional on the author’s part or not.

 Let’s start with the most obvious: the odd art style. Santa Inoue is not best artist, the characters have weird proportions, their faces don’t look very good either...The hands are really badly drawn sometimes…

He doesn’t have a good grasp on perspectives either and the backgrounds sometimes just look plain wrong.

The art looks amateurish, and the whole manga feels like Inoue drew it alone without assistants (I don’t know if that is really the case or not). 

Oh, and he also sometimes reuses the exact same panels several times, in a way that is quite jarring :

Yet the clumsiness, and weirdness of the art is perfect for the story.                     

Neighbor No.13 was published in 1993, and looking at Inoue’s more recent manga, he made huuge progress in drawing, and his current more realistic style makes me think his earlier clumsiness was not wanted as part of his artstyle.

Yet in my opinion it had its own charm. Honestly I think Neighbor no.13 would be nowhere as good with clean and neat art.

It feels like genuine, unintentional Heta-uma (bad yet genius). The weird perspectives just work really well with the theme of mental disturbance, and insanity of the main character.

The environment feels unstable, with objects changing sizes from panel to panel for example.

↑ The size of this building changes in every panel. But here, the fact that it looks higher in the panel where the character is falling works well for dramatic effect.

And while his skills are not the best, one has to commend Santa Inoue for not staying in a comfort zone of easy things to draw. 

There are plenty of authors who are not the best artists and just get away with drawing as little background as possible, and by drawing the characters in the same frontal angles…whereas Santa Inoue does a lot of  foreshortening, audacious camera angles, and draws detailed backgrounds that draw the reader’s eye (with lots of flashy decorations and details in the characters homes.) 

The naive art also fits the soft protagonist (when he is not his alter No.13) and the sometimes unrealistic plot, as the characters’ behaviors are at times a bit hard to believe, and some stuff seems too far-stretched, especially at the end. 

Neighbor no.13 oscillates between taking itself seriously and a more humorous approach. I felt that the humor and the parts actually meant to be scary or serious are not always balanced well. At some point, two totally useless joke characters were introduced (one of them is a Maetel parody), and they just kind of make it hard to take anthing seriously. 

Moreover the end of the manga  is confusing and not very satisfactory in my opinion.

But as flawed as Neighbor No.13 might be, I’m still very fond of it.

12. Do you read any fanfics and if so, what’s your favourite one?

I do! I love reading all different kinds of fic (btw refs always welcome 👀) from multi chapter to one-shots, to canon verse to human aus, there’s so many good ones! But my all time fav is a German bros fic called My Brother on AO3. Basically, after his mother dies, Gilbert discovers that actually he’s not an only child and is determined to find and meet his brother.

This is hard. I’m not sure honestly. I love Ludwig, but I feel like our meeting would be awkward, same goes for Mathew. And I’m not sure if my opinion would change if I met Gilbert irl. But I don’t think I’d regret meeting any of them either. Would love to hug them all.

49. What is the thing in general that you absolutely love about Hetalia?

I like how light and funny the canon material is. A lot of people rag on it which I don’t get, yeah it’s got it’s flaws and I’m no stranger to ignoring parts of it, but it’s such a good concept and it never fails to make me smile when I’m having a really bad day. Hetalia is silly, but it also taught me things about the world I never would have learned otherwise, and imo makes a good statement about how stereotypes are so ridiculous that it’s laughable.

Day 5 - Embarrassment | Friends

It’s not my best story but I was thinking that the bel and lux supporting their brother when he has a crush...

Lars - Netherlands / Mei - Taiwan / Emma - Belgium / Henri - Luxembourg

Lars has been thinking about his younger brother’s idea of inviting Mei to have dinner with them. She was a very good friend of his. Lars had never been very talkative or friendly, but as soon as he met her he wanted to talk to her every day, and to tell the truth, he had a big crush on her.

“So, do you think this is a good idea?” he asked him, not very convinced. 

“Yeah, I mean she’s your friend, isn’t she? Besides, this could be your chance to tell her how you feel about her.” Henri said.

Lars almost spit out the coffee. 

“I don’t like her,” Lars said, red up to his ears. 

Emma and Henri looked at each other then looked at him.

“Yeah, if you say so,” Emma said. 

“It’s true”

“Alright…. Just invite her” 

Mei accepted immediately and he prayed that everything would go well. He didn’t know why he was so nervous if his siblings knew how to behave, although they sometimes bragged a lot about him. He had asked them not to say anything embarrassing, much less make any insinuations about his supposed feelings for her. 

Fortunately, that night the house looked perfect. Everything was in its place, it looked like a picture taken from a catalogue. Lars smiled in relief, maybe he was worried about nothing, and he felt silly for imagining horrible things like welcoming them with embarrassing pictures of him when he was child or something like that. So, he decided to relax and went to put his jacket and tie to his bedroom. 

“You have a very pretty house,” Mei said. 

“Thank you. This could be yours one day too” Henri whispered. 

“Excuse me?”

“Nothing” Emma nudged Henri with her elbow. It was too soon to tell her that. “We’re glad we finally met you, because Lars hadn’t stopped talking about you,” commented Emma.

Mei blushed and smiled. Did he really talk that much about her? She wondered. She thought he was more like the secretive type, but it was nice to know that he appreciated her too. 

“You know how my brother is, so we are happy he has a friend. He has always been very shy, since he was a kid. Let me show you a picture” Emma offered. 

And when Lars returned, they were looking at his old photo album. 

“Look, he was wearing a bunny costume here,” said Emma with a tender smile. “I think he was like 4 years old, he used to be really cute”

“Yeah, and look, he was on the soccer team of his school. He was such a good athlete” Henri added. “I bet you have noticed it”

“Oh, I didn’t know you liked sports,” Mei said as soon as she saw Lars back.  

“Well, I have been busy now… but why are you seeing that?” he said, taking it away. At least she didn’t look at that picture of him sitting on the toilet, he thought. “Let’s eat right now, I’m hungry”

But dinner didn’t get any better. Emma and Henri only talked about Lars. About his good grades at school, that accident with the bike that left him a scar above an eyebrow, that time when he cried because Emma took his bunny plushie without permission. Henri changed the topic to talk about his big brother’s successful social life. 

“He has always been popular, but he almost never dated. Did you know his type are short girls with long brown hair who like pink” Henri assured her.

Lars blushed. Why did he have to say something like that? He asked him with a glare. But Mei didn’t get it wrong, she only smiled shyly. Actually, she was wondering that. The conversation had different topics as Henri and Emma tried to focus the attention on their big brother, but he did the impossible to say another thing and distract them. 

For a moment, Mei excused herself and went to the bathroom. So, Lars complained about what was happening. 

“What’s wrong with you guys? I asked you not to say those things?”

“We’re just trying to help you to get a girlfriend, because if we wait for you to tell her anything we’ll get old,” Henri insisted. 

The three siblings argued about the best way to continue that dinner. Lars sounded too embarrassed because this was the first time they acted all meddlesome and interested in his love life. Well, yes, he liked her and probably he would eventually confess, he didn’t need help. 

Mei heard all that, but when she returned the siblings were quiet. The silence felt a bit uncomfortable, until they ate the dessert and they only talked about the cake and with that the nightmare dinner was over. However, they asked her to visit them again anytime.

The way to Mei's home, Lars was quiet, he only nodded to Mei’s shy comments about the delicious food, the pretty house and the tasty cake. 

“I’m sorry for today,” he interrupted her. “It’s ok if you don’t want to talk to me anymore,” he said.

“What are you talking about? To tell the truth, I was nervous. You guys look like the perfect family, but I felt like I was at home”

“But they gave you too much information…”

“Yes, but I could know more about you. I really liked them, they are so nice, but... I like you better” she said quietly and before saying goodbye she kissed his cheek. 

Lars was surprised and happy. It was strange, but he needed to thank them, they really knew what they were doing, he thought.

I'm ranking my fleet of ships! The list will span fandoms, so bear with me and wave from the piers (or jump aboard 😏) while I organize my fangirl ravings into some semblance of order. Ranked from greatest to least, with honorable mentions.

Note: I use the words "pairing" and "ship" to differentiate two things. A "pairing" is a couple of characters with some canonical relationship (could be anything). A "ship" is a romantically or sexually involved couple that does not have to be canon.

The Fleet

Galleons (OTPs)

Yes, I know there's technically only supposed to be one ship that's your One True Pairing, but I've got several and choosing between them is like choosing my favorite child. (My list, my rules.)

1. Tendershipping or Stockholmshipping (Bakura Ryou/Yami Bakura, Yu-Gi-Oh)

This ship is divine. It really has it all -- gothic themes, horror elements, toxicity with the capacity for romance -- and has captivated me for as long as I've been a Yu-Gi-Oh fan. It's probably what influenced some of my more interesting predilections (coughcough number 13 cough).

2. USUK, Special Relationship, or Joker (America/Britain, Hetalia)

I mean, it's basically canon.

But pissing off antis aside, it's great seeing this relationship develop and witnessing them being really intimate (meaning knowing each other well, not the other thing) in the show/comics, so how could I not? Plus, as an American I'm all too familiar with the Special Relationship.

3. Spamano or SpeRo (Spain/Romano, Hetalia)

Ditto, number 2. Except this one might actually be canon. Seriously, I'm preeeeetty sure Himaruya & Co. have long since discovered the fandom's love for this ship and have peppered it as slight fanservice. (Exhibit A: the April Fool's Day OVA.) My favorite refrain when it comes to this ship is, "Could you really see them with anyone else?"

4. Bronzeshipping (Marik Ishtar/"Yami" Marik, Yu-Gi-Oh)

This ship haunts me. It's dark and lovely and the pairing deserved way more attention in the show. My love for this ship stems from the observation that Yami Marik was created expressly to comfort and protect his lighter half, and despite wanting to excise him later, he still tries to carry out Marik's plan (i.e. kill the Pharaoh) despite no longer having to. Methinks there's some subconscious need drawing them together, and I stan.

5. AmeriPan (America/Japan, Hetalia)

I've recently fallen for this one. It's fun to write, even more fun to read, because of the sliding spectrum from angsty to fluffy. It started with the series pairing them off to demonstrate their friendship, then a realization that they're the paragon of "opposites attract." A large part of my love comes from @heta too, so kudos.

6. Yoreki (Yogi/Gareki, Karneval)

C'mon, just look at them. They're in love, your honor.

On a serious note, the manga goes out of its way to demonstrate the growing bond between these boys to the point of having significant consequences for the plot (in other words, their friendship fucks and then unfucks a lot of stuff). Do I think Tōya will actually ship them? No, but I can dream.

7. Starshipping (Yuki Jaden or Judai/Fudo Yusei, Yu-Gi-Oh)

Speaking of dreaming, I don't even know if this ship is allowed because these characters have never canonically met. Still, within the context of Bonds Beyond Time alone, they make the perfect pair. I'd have watched the entire movie with just the two of them, or better yet, a buddy-cop, scifi, action-adventure, card-game-playing movie where they have to save the world before prom.

On a serious note, their personalities balance each other out perfectly, and as @entamewitchlulu expertly demonstrated in "Hourglass of Stars," they can even exorcise each other's demons.

8. Stein/Spirit (Soul Eater)

No one can convince me that these two didn't have some intimate relationship beyond friendship. At the very least, Stein is attached to Spirit, so much so that he anchors Stein in his bouts of Madness. Plus, they snap back into partnership far too easily for two people who spent any amount of time apart not thinking about each other. All of that with a potential for toxic romance? Sign me the fuck up.

And I can't pretend tastewithouttalent didn't utterly convince me of their own canon.

9. Klance/Leith (Keith/Lance, Voltron: Legendary Defender)

They're in love, your honor.

Once again, a series goes out of its way to explore an intimate relationship between two, like, really compatible characters. So how could I not? (Also Leith is a way better ship name.)

10. Drarry (Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter, Harry Potter)

Because I'm basic and love a good rivals/enemies to lovers trope. Plus the fanfic has matured and refined over the years.

11. Tokitatsu/Tsukitachi/Hirato/Akari (Karneval)

This is just pure joy. I love the idea of the two of the people Hirato finds most annoying hooking up and dragging him into it. Same goes for Akari. Plus, this foursome is made up of two quality pairings (Tsukitachi/Hirato and Akari/Tokitatsu) as well as fan favorite ship Hirato/Akari. So fun for the whole family.

12. Drinnarry (Draco Malfoy/Ginny Potter/Harry Potter, Harry Potter)

Speaking of poly ships, this new love of mine is inspired by Cursed Child. Because did you really think Ginny was going to let Draco be lonely? Plus, Drarry is always fun.

13. Genkaku/Nagi (Deadman Wonderland)

Flashback to when I said I loved toxic ships:

It really has it all -- gothic themes, horror elements, toxicity with the capacity for romance [...]

This one is pretty bad, and I know it, and I adore it. The penchant for violent, possessive "love" in literature and fandom resonates with a deep part of my soul, and Genkaku's obsession with Nagi fits perfectly, like a fishook in an eye.

14. Jay/Dick (Jason Todd/Dick Grayson, Batman)

This was the ship that made me break my incest rule (Incest Rule: Don't Ship It). Technically they're adopted so it isn't incestuous, but it still feels too close. Still, Jason and Dick are, like, really good foils of each other (intentionally so, DC didn't want a second Robin who was just like the first), which leads to fantastic angst, resentment, violence, and humor. Throw some sexual tension on top and you're ready to set sail.

Ships I need to survive but don't think about often.

15. Destiel (Dean Winchester/Castiel, Supernatural)

Canon? Either way, this pairing has a famously tortuous build up, and I fell for it. My love for it peaked in Season 7, when Dean throws the Connect Four game off the table because he has Had It and wants Cas back to normal. The look on Castiel's face 😩

16. Marie/Azusa (Soul Eater)

Azusa clearly has a thing for Marie, and you can't tell me otherwise. Besides, my Stein/Spirit ship works out a thousand times better if this ship sails.

17. Dick/Kory (Dick Grayson/Kory'andr, Teen Titans)

Ironically, I hated this pairing way back when (even as a Teen Titans cartoon fan) because I wanted Dick and Barbara to get back together. However, DC's live action show Titans showed me the error of my ways. Of course, now I'm stuck hoping they get (back) together in season 3.

18. Scorbus (Scorpius Malfoy/Albus Potter, The Cursed Child)

I saw Cursed Child and just, like, adopted this one. It's kinda like Spamano -- probably not intended by the creator but makes waaaay too much sense to unsee.

19. Cyclops/Rogue (Scott Summers/Rogue, X-Men Evolution)

Old but gold. Probably one of my first ships, and appropriately for one of my favorite shows growing up. (X-Men Ev is easily the best X-Men series, don't @ me.) That field trip episode did it for me, as we see them finally open up to and trust each other. It's also fun to think about Scott chasing good girl Jean while infatuated with bad girl Rogue. We love irony.

20. Nightcrawler/Scarlet Witch (Kurt Wagner/Wanda Maximoff, Wolverine and the X-Men)

This was an okay series with really interesting premises and adaptations, not least of which was Magneto's Genosha, a mutant-only island nation. Kurt and Wanda just hit it off in their episode and I wondered if they could have depended on each other during that rough time. Lo and behold, I found out much later that they have a child in an alternate timeline in the comics, so maybe this ship holds more than ballast.

21. KagSan (Kagome/Sango, InuYasha)

I got it in my head one day and now it won't leave. I don't prefer it to the canon ships, but it's nice to fantasize about.

22. Sookie Stackhouse/Eric Northman (True Blood)

Eric was my favorite vampire (closely followed by Pam), and his fascination in Sookie pressed all the right buttons. Imagine my delight when they finally hooked up, and then my dismay when Sookie subsequently swears off vampires.

23. Violetshipping, formerly known as Puppyshipping (Seto Kaiba/Joey Wheeler)

I hate that I love this ship so much, so bottom of the list it goes. Still, it was the first one for which I wrote fanfic, and this pairing is canonically significant to the themes of the series. And what lit critic can resist that pull?

Spawned from their bonding during and after the search for Carol's daughter. They've been close ever since (at least through season 7, which is where I stopped watching).

Amexico (America/Mexico, Hetalia)

Yes, I made up this ship name, too. First off, Mexico deserves to be a country in the show (although they were named in an episode, and I suppose that's progress). Second, this one is weird because it involves my headcanon for Mexico: a passionate woman who won't back down from a challenge and has a love/hate relationship with America. They bicker and pretend to hate each other but need one another for commerce and are sometimes very similar.

Accelerator/Misaka, (A Certain Scientific Railgun/Magical Index)

Call me System of a Down, I love toxicity. This pairing in general has the potential for a good complex relationship that helps them both mature. And should I sprinkle some possessive romance in there on Accelerator's behalf, I'm sure you'll forgive me.

Germano Meta

Brief disclaimer to get it out of the way: My OTP is Romerica, and I ship Gerita a lot. I’m probably not the best person to write this meta, but I’m not opposed to Germano and have thought about how it could work within the canon universe, so I’m going to give it a try.

If you take a very shallow view of Germany and Romano’s canon relationship, pairing them together doesn’t make much sense. Romano is hostile towards Germany in a way that goes beyond his typical tsundere attitude, and Germany is closer to Veneziano (and there’s a whole arc about him having romantic feelings for Veneziano in the Buon San Valentino strips). But the reality is more complicated than that. Romano is most hostile to Germany in the earliest written WWII strips, and he’s clearly softened to him in modern times. In chapters 357-360 of Heta World Stars, Romano rides in Germany’s car and admits to thinking it’s cool. He’s even comfortable enough around Germany to fall asleep during the car ride. Furthermore, Veneziano’s reaction during Buon San Valentino after Germany shows him the tomato ring suggests that Germany’s feelings are one-sided. Veneziano says “I’m sorry” repeatedly and says “I appreciate your feelings, but—” These aren’t normal reactions for someone who returns romantic feelings, even if you take into account Veneziano’s confusion throughout their “date.”

Here’s how Germano could develop in canon verse: After Buon San Valentino, Veneziano sits Germany down and makes it clear he sees him as just a friend. Germany is heartbroken of course, but he stays friends with Veneziano (and thus remains in Romano’s social orbit). At some point, Veneziano might date someone else, and Germany tries his best to be happy for them because he values his friendship with Veneziano and possibly whoever he is dating if it’s someone like Japan that Germany is also close to. Gradually, Germany’s feelings for Veneziano fade, and after a while he is able to be his friend without lingering sadness or jealousy.

Meanwhile, Romano’s distrust and hostility towards Germany begin to fade as he spends more time around him. Post WWII, he starts to see that Germany isn’t that bad and that the assumptions he may have had about him based on WWII or Germania (since he was scared of a German soldier as a child, which suggests WWII wasn’t the only issue) aren’t true. Instead of hatred, there’s grudging respect, which Germany reciprocates. From grudging respect could come genuine friendship, and then, after a long time, love. By that point, Germany would be over Veneziano and therefore able to consider Romano in a romantic light. If Romano started liking Germany while he was still hung up on Veneziano, it could be really unhealthy for him given his insecurity issues surrounding his little brother. Fortunately, Romano is really stubborn, so by the time he admits to himself that he likes Germany that way, Germany would be in a position to at least potentially reciprocate.

The things that initially put people off of shipping Germano (Romano’s hostility and Germany’s feelings for Veneziano) are actually what make them interesting as a slow burn ship. It’s different from other slow burns that could happen with mutual pining and miscommunication tropes. To even get to the place where they could see each other romantically, both Germany and Romano have to go through a lot of character and relationship development first.

First, L'manberg

- probably very boisterous and loud basically America but claims to be british/european. Had a very short life, growing up quickly and going through lots of changes only to disappear after the final traces had been destroyed. Hated when they had to rename to Manberg because of their second boss, also basically got a completely new look after being being burned. Hates armor and was very isolationist at first but slowly warmed up after the intial fight for independence with the Greater SMP. Mistrustful after Eret's betrayal and definitely holds grudges, but also became very scared and battle hardened as time went on.

Greater Dream SMP

- originally very chill but became more chaotic as time went on and HATED L'manberg, loves their official boss (Eret) and is low key kinda gay but hates their REAL boss (Dream). Also the very first nation to exist though they didn't realize they were a nation until l'manberg arrived. Very parental towards all the others since officially they're all related in some way

Badlands

- some how related to The Greater Dream smp but no one knows how. Much more power hungry than the others, but recently due to the egg has been very very conflicted on how to deal with it. Also is probably fading due to this conflict giving way to their younger? Twin? Brother the eggpire. Also took the real boss of the greater smp hostage

El Rapids

- L'manberg's little brother but speaks Spanish and has a vendetta against the Greater Dream Smp because of George

Snowchester

- /says/ he's not a nation but like, he's got an army some how. Very battle hardened and related to original L'manberg. He wears lots of warm clothes and is over all very mistrusting but very kind to the others in small ways. Has nukes but hasn't told anyone (may have lost one some how, still working that out)

Kinoko kingdom

- has a love for Japan but also a fascination with mushrooms and also goes around sticking pictures with their face onto everyone else as propaganda. El Rapid's child but only appeared after he disappeared

Las Nevedas

- related to El Rapids? No one has seen them. Ever. Probably a cryptid. Maybe getting into some voodoo shit??? Who knows
