No Doubt - Just a Girl 1995
"Just a Girl" was released as the lead single to American rockband No Doubt's third studio album, Tragic Kingdom (1995). The ska punk, pop-punk, alternative rock, and new wave song with sarcastic lyrics was written by Gwen Stefani and Tom Dumont, and produced by Matthew Wilder. Lyrically, "Just a Girl" is about Stefani's perspective of life as a woman and her struggles with having strict parents. "Just a Girl" was the first song Stefani wrote without the assistance of her brother Eric.
"Just a Girl" received positive reviews from music critics, who commended the feminist lyrics and Stefani's vocals. The single is typically regarded as being the breakthrough that popularized No Doubt. It became their first charting single in the US, peaking at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and entering the Alternative Songs, Hot Rock Songs, and Mainstream Top 40 component charts. It also reached the top ten in several other countries, including Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, and the UK. On the 1996 year-end chart in Australia, "Just a Girl" was ranked as the 22nd most-successful song of the year. In New Zealand, "Just a Girl" peaked at number nine and was 1996's 25th best-selling single.
The song was featured in '90s cult hits Clueless (1995) and Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion (1997) — movies that served as power-players for unlikely female heroes. Stefani's aim at a male-centric world ended up being one of the most prominent feminist anthems of the '90s — it's a song that stands out now as the music industry's misogynistic outlook continues on. The song also appears in the film Captain Marvel (2019). In March 2023, the song was covered by Florence and the Machine for Showtime Networks' series Yellowjackets; their version appears in the trailer and soundtrack for the second season.
"Just a Girl" received a total of 84,3% yes votes! Previous No Doubt polls: #265 "Sunday Morning".

BNHA and Japanese law, aka why Enji and Hawks can't go to jail
I think it’s fair to dislike BNHA ending.
However when I see posts saying they don’t like it because neither Hawks nor Endeavor ended up in jail I think it’s important to remember that, in Japan, when BNHA was written:
Law enforcers can murder escaping criminals provided said criminals were judged dangerous enough (just so you know Japan had been asked to revise its domestic legislation on police use of firearms to ensure it complies with international law because currently it still doesn’t).
Although domestic violence is forbidden by 2001, Japanese law does not provide for domestic violence in terms of prosecutorial considerations. At the time BNHA took place the police wasn’t even obliged to investigate when ‘domestic disputes’ were reported, and the most they would do was offer counseling. The law has been changed in 2024 and things are a little better (even though Japanese law STILL does not provide for domestic violence in terms of prosecutorial considerations police is encouraged to investigate and the court may consider to impose penalties for crimes related to domestic violence aka assault and injury), but Japanese women still complain that, despite the improvements, it’s extremely hard to have their abusers punished.
Parents were banned from physically punishing their children solely in 2019 (BNHA started in 2014, Vol 21 was still printed in 2018, meaning the Todoroki saga was established PRIOR to this) following several fatal cases of abuse dealt out in the name of discipline however Japanese law does not provide for this in terms of prosecutorial considerations. The most that will be done is to take the children away if they fear for their life.
Abusive training (which includes beating, name calling, humiliation, overworking…) is not forbidden (although guidelines recommend not to do it) and, of course, as a consequence, Japanese law does not provide for abusive training in terms of prosecutorial considerations. People are protesting about this (notable protests had been done during the Olympic games) as people had also committed suicide over this. By the end of BNHA as far as I know, nothing was done.
Children of third-year elementary school age and below can be left unsupervised. A 2023 attempt at changing it due to unsupervised children dying was met with severe criticism nationwide so that in the end nothing was done.
Arranged marriages (as in parents picking up a candidate for their child to marry) are legal. The children have however the power to refuse a partner presented to them by the parents. Also, when organizing an arranged marriage it’s fair for both parts to investigate the other party and check if the family doesn’t have undesirable genetic traits (mental illness cases, lack of pure Japanese blood, relations with people belonging to groups considered impure) so that the children won’t inherit them.
Now, I oversimplified what are in truth a lot of regulations and rules expressed by the laws and compared Hero training to sport training (I digged a little more deeply on this sort of things in this post) but, long story short, Enji and Hawks don’t escape jail because they’re rich, because they’re high in ranking, because they have connections or bribed someone. It’s just because law doesn’t consider punishing them and law wouldn’t punish them even if they were commoners like, let’s say, Kotarou or Himiko’s parents.
Also, Horikoshi is basically showing the negative consequences of all the above mentioned points, which can be viewed as a subtle way to criticize such things.
So, again, it’s fine if you hate BNHA ending, but please, don’t think Horikoshi is just letting those guys break law without consequences just because. If they don’t end in jail for such things it’s exactly because people normally don’t do it and that’s why we’ve the League criticizing society for how wrong it is, not just their abusive parents. Society enabled the abuse and you might very well see the League as a representation for the Toyoko Kids and the Jōhatsu.
Also, just in case, I'm not Japanese and just saying Japanese law doesn't think they should be punished, doesn't mean I agree. Just that I don't expect the story would follow my country's law.
If you want to know more about Japanese law please, research about them. It'll give you a better perspective on why some things in BNHA go the way they go.

Badninken! I must ask your opinion on the strawhat crew and other recurring characters like vivi, ace, buggy etc
Who are your top 5 faves?
Ooooooh! Fun! Putting the characters in a precise ranking order is too difficult though so I'll ramble instead.
Tumblr media
Except that Zoro is number one straw hat of course. I knew from the start that I'd love him because he's a sword dude with Mugen's voice with that subtle lisp and most adorable sulk and uniquely non-annoying angry scream. As a kid he wanted to be the best swordsman by having the most swords at once and he's commited to his purpose. He's got super cool and utterly ridiculous special attacks with funny names and he's so, so serious about his swords in a way I find almost unbearably endearing. He was the first one to join Luffy but he never uses that to act superior over others. It's never even mentioned and he doesn't have an official second in command rank or anything. It only becomes obvious in those moments where shit gets really serious and his loyalty to his captain shines so strong it makes me cry. He's also so very stupid <3
Tumblr media
This is the best Luffy screenshot I have
So, I did not expect to love Luffy but I do. Sometimes I really don't but that's usually when he's too excited or eating and that's a sound issue. This guy got me in the very first episode, as soon as his happy, sunny, explosive silliness paused and he got that sort of insane but still calm look in his eyes and talked seriously and with complete conviction in a way that makes you believe every word and then he fuckin punched some guys to back it all up. I think he's neat.
Tumblr media
Chopper!! If there ever was a character I feel spiritually connected to in this series, it's this guy. I "cosplayed" him on Halloween in Shibuya 2019 without knowing much about him at all. I just bought his hat at donkihote because I recognized it. That's a very fond memory so I was excited to get to know him and oh! He's so relatable 😭 The way he gets all starry eyed and flappy-armed with admiration as soon as anyone does anything cool is especially relatable since I'm usually reacting exactly like that at the same time. I love how he's often nervous and scared but finds more and more confidence over time. He's fiercely protective and very serious about his job. I also love how he boosts himself up by calling himself a man, because he is! That's even his devil fruit power! It just sounds so funny coming from him.
Tumblr media
(insert screenshot of Sanji here)
I like Sanji whenever he's not having an episode. His affliction is unfortunately getting worse and it's hard to ignore. He's normal around other men at least, and that's when he actually gets to be a character. I like that character. His fighting style is super cool and whether you ship it or not (I do) he's got an amazing dynamic going on with Zoro. They seriously make me laugh every time they interact. Idiots. They're perfect.
The others are ok.
So, side characters!!
I don't know all of these super well since some haven't gotten their time to shine yet or are still a bit mysterious. There will be more than five, no number rules can contain me. I'll just ramble. So Ace and Shanks are both super cool and interesting of course. Wish there was more of Ace before the whole thing. Dracule Mihawk wins big points for that fucking name and his whole aesthetic plus Zoro support. I did not like Crocodile during his arc, until he revealed his "banana alligators" like a damn Bond villain and also when I saw good fan art of him for the first time. Damn. Now I love him. I didn't care about Smoker either but now I really care about Smoker, Law's unwilling hero. I recommend looking up fan art of them too. Speaking of Law, I'm in love with his iconic crew trio, Bepo, Penguin and Sachi. I did not expect to like Doflamingo at all because he's predictably portrayed as the absolute worst predatory piece of shit in fic and that doesn't seem to be far off from canon. But I like when bad things happen because interesting characters make them happen, and he is interesting. Also love those pink feathers and his weird ass way of walking, what's up with that? He's got ghibli monster vibes when he's just feathers and legs and HUGE messed up spider hands. Fan art of him is excellent too and I'm seriously tempted to paint pink feathers. Eustass Kid has barely gotten screentime yet but he's so metal. That's his thing. I love that. He looks insane and fun and he's messing with Law and I've fallen in love with him through fan fic so I'm looking forward to getting to know him.
That's it for now! There will be more ❤️

This was one of the first doctors I was following and he abandoned his practice and fled to another country. He was very out spoken about what was going on and even stated he was being threatened. Every now and then he would pop-up somewhere and do an interview before totally going quiet. Now this surfaced. 👇
It seems like they silenced yet another high profile Doctor who spoke the truth. He died at home on 18th May 2023.
Very shocked to learn of the death of Dr Rashid Buttar a major name in the medical profession who was amongst the very first in 2019 to expose the Convid-19 Plandemic Hoax and the Toxic Experimental mRNA Miracle Jabs.
He was a fearless man who spoke up and led international conferences with doctors, scientists, and researchers, and was due to speak at a major medical conference later this month where he was to reveal even more corruption at state level and powerful money interests.
Dr Rashid was a British born Pakistani but moved to the USA with his parents as a child. He served in the US special forces achieving the rank of Major where he retired as Brigade Surgeon and Clinical Director of Emergency Surgery.
He knew of the threats to his life, but speaking truth was more important because he saw what was happening in the hospitals where otherwise healthy people were being dispatched in huge numbers.
He was a super fit military man and had given a lengthy interview whilst stood up just a few days ago on the 16th May, with zero indications that his health was in any life threatening condition.
He was one of the first doctors to be de-platformed because he was reaching millions of people. He was direct and blunt and called out the so called health and medical regulatory organisations that should have been protecting us instead of being in bed with Big Pharma.
Another truth speaker and pure blood taken out by the Satanists.
Tumblr media
Cause of Death: 👇
It was said that Dr Buttar was poisoned just over 6 months ago.
His lab found snake or snail venom in his body which attacks the brain and heart tissues
He will be deeply missed and remembered as the hero he was and remains forever and always.
Fly High Dr. Rashid Buttar and Thanks for all your wisdom. 🙏

Dragon Ball Super Movie 1: Broly (1/3)
Tumblr media
At this point, all that's left for the 2023 DB Apocrypha Liveblog is the DBS Super Hero movie and the manga adaptation, which ought to be finishing up in the next couple of months. But I thought if I was going to cover the Dragon Ball Super movies, I should take a look at the first one, even though I went over it already back in 2019. But it seems like a shame to leave it out when I'm already doing the rest of Dragon Ball Super, and it's been four years, so maybe I'll have some new insights on the movie.
For example, I finally noticed that the title screen shows the gigantic full moon of Vampa, which is literally the first thing Broly sees when his space pod opens. I never picked up on that before, I guess because the moon is so big it takes up the entire view from the pod, and so it just sort of looks like an indistinct melange of background color. But yeah, this time around, I realized that Broly spent a lot of nights under this giant full moon, turning into an Oozaru every single time. No wonder he grew up so weird.
My plan here is to break the movie up into three parts. First we'll go through the flashback portion, then we'll get into Frieza's scheme to use Earth's Dragon Balls, and then we'll cover the big fight at the end. Sound good? Okay, let's get going.
Tumblr media
We start in the past, which the movie calls "41 years ago," but that doesn't sound quite right to me. I feel like it should be 44 or 45, but I've never taken the time to go through it. At any rate, this was around the time Goku and Vegeta were born, as we'll soon see.
In this time, the Saiyan kingdom on Planet Vegeta is a vassal state controlled by King Cold, who brings his fleet in for a visit. The Saiyans are disturbed and irritated by their grandiose arrival. One ship just plows through a building, for example. But there's nothing King Vegeta III can do about it. He goes out to meet King Cold, who won't even give him a handshake, and just tries to keep him happy. As it turns out, Cold is only here to introduce his son, Frieza. Cold's retiring, and Frieza will be put in charge of Cold's forces.
Tumblr media
Frieza says he has "special expectations" of the Saiyans, and he presents them with 500 new "Scouters", which are pretty old hat in DBZ, but in this flashback they're cutting-edge technology. Up to this point, the Cold Force has been using bulky "Scout Scopes", but these do all the same stuff and are small enough to wear on your face. They also double as communicators. Frieza notices Saiyan snipers training weapons on him and he kills them all with ease, showing off the precision of the Scouters and his immense personal strength all at once.
Tumblr media
After the Frieza Force takes their leave, King Vegeta takes solace in his son, Prince Vegeta, who's still growing in an incubation tank. King Vegeta believes that his son will grow up to become the mightiest Saiyan of all, powerful enough to topple Frieza and rule the universe instead.
Tumblr media
But during his visit to the nursery, he notices another Saiyan infant and demands an explanation. The Saiyans test their infants for combat potential, and the ones with the highest scores are given special care and training as "Elite" warriors. But King Vegeta thinks this new baby, Broly, doesn't belong here. I don't get how he could tell that just by looking. There are lots of other incubation tanks in this room, and Prince Vegeta's is in the most prominent position, so it's not like Broly's mere presence here is some sort of affront. Maybe all the other babies here are part of the Vegeta Royal Family, and the king knows about all their births except for this one.
Tumblr media
Let me go back to an earlier shot, when the king is heading out to meet King Cold. Before, I just wrote these other Saiyans off as advisors, or high-ranking officials, but they could be blood relations, too. Saiyans age pretty slowly, so for all we know, that's King Vegeta's dad on the right there, with the mohawk. And maybe that's King Vegeta's grandfather on the left, still alive after all this time.
I mean, they're probably more likely to be cousins and uncles and such, sure. You'd think King Vegeta I & II would be long dead this far into Vegeta III's reign, but maybe it doesn't work that way. Maybe they turned over the crown once their heir surpassed them in power, and remained at court to provide counsel. That seems to be how King Cold and Frieza work, anyway.
Anyway, my point is that the Saiyans practiced a strict-but-backward form of eugenics, trying to selectively breed better warriors by testing them from infancy. The ones who test well get all the perks and privileges, and the ones who test exceptionally well are no doubt married into the royal family, so that the ruling class will be guaranteed to have the most powerful individuals. And under this system, the crown prince ought to have the greatest power level of all. So when King Vegeta comes into this nursery, it's basically a family reunion, except for this new kid, who's merely the son of one of his officers.
The Saiyans who work in the nursery try to explain that Broly tested incredibly high, even higher than the record-setting Prince Vegeta, but when they measure him again, the equipment explodes. Then they scan him again and get a rating only half as impressive as what they got the first time around. So Broly's readings are erratic, to say the least.
Tumblr media
This lady, Nion, who seems to be in charge of the place, explains that Broly is still exceptional, any way you slice it. With the proper training, she thinks he might become the next Legendary Super Saiyan. King Vegeta takes no comfort in that thought.
Tumblr media
Soon, King Vegeta prepares to have Broly sent into space, and Paragus, Broly's father, barges into the throne room to object. Saiyans do send their babies to conquer other planets, but this is normally done with only the weakest of their children, the ones who test the lowest and are deemed unfit for even the least of Saiyan resources. But Broly tested well, and yet Vegeta is sending him to Vampa, a planetoid with no resale value whatsoever. It doesn't make sense to toss away Broly's great potential, but King Vegeta sees Broly as a risk. In his estimation, Broly is a freak of nature, maybe even a mutant. And if he's allowed to grow up and loses control of himself, his power might make him a threat to the entire universe. At least this way, he gets to survive in isolation.
But Paragus doesn't buy it, and accuses King Vegeta of being jealous. Broly tested higher than the prince, and now he's trying to cover up the truth. But it doesn't matter much, since Broly's space pod is already set for launch. Paragus smashes through a window to get a spaceship to follow him.
Tumblr media
And maybe King Vegeta has a point in all of this, but the whole dilemma beautifully illustrates the folly of the Saiyan child-rearing tradition. King Vegeta had at least three Super Saiyans born during his reign. But the only one he was willing to support was his own son, because he's the only one who was "supposed" to become that powerful. Goku turned out to have the exact same potential, but he tested poorly at birth, so he was written off as a low-class. Then you have Broly, who actually tests really, really well as a baby, but without the "benefit" of the eugenics practices. Broly had the test scores without the noble bloodline, and for that, King Vegeta writes him off as "abnormal". Well who's to say Prince Vegeta isn't abnormal?
And when you look at it that way, it's not hard to imagine why the Legendary Super Saiyan only appears once every thousand years. It's not because it takes that long for a Saiyan to be born with that kind of power; it's because the Saiyan population is so hostile to anyone who displays that kind of promise. So even if there's lots of Saiyans with the potential, it takes a thousand years for one of them to overcome the Saiyans' bullshit.
Tumblr media
As Paragus hightails it out of the Vegeta system, another Saiyan named Beets tags along. He tries to convince Paragus to turn back, but Paragus won't be swayed. He plans to follow Broly to Vampa, rescue him, and then train him on some other planet. One day, he and Broly can take revenge on King Vegeta, but in the meantime he promises to allow Beets to return home after he drops Paragus and Broly off some place.
A lot of fans really like Beets, in part for shipping purposes, but also I think he just has some appeal as a lower-tier worker who's not even a fighter. He offers a fresh perspective on the Saiyans, who used to be largely defined by Raditz's edgelord rhetoric in the early episodes of DBZ. But this movie shows us a lot of "regular" Saiyans who care about their children, or work ordinary jobs that don't involve plundering alien worlds.
Tumblr media
For my part, I'm more into the Saiyans who work the nursery. Beets is all right, but he doesn't have that big a role in this movie, so Beets fans can have him. Give me Nion, please. Rrrrlll! She can measure my power level, if you know what I mean. Wait, what do I mean? I dunno. Let's move on.
Tumblr media
The problem with Paragus' scheme is that he's in such a hurry to find Broly that he crashes the ship on Vampa. Then he forces Beets to help him locate Broly because he's afraid Beets might try to take off and leave them. Beets says he would never do such a thing, but Paragus knows that Saiyans have a well-deserved reputation for treachery. More on that later.
Tumblr media
Vampa's wildlife seems to consist entirely of giant bugs and even bigger green furry monsters. The bugs drink the blood of the monsters, who then eat the bugs. I think there must be more to it than this, but that's all Paragus and Beets see in this scene. Life is harsh on Vampa.
Tumblr media
They finally find the boy in a cave, where he's eating from the carcasses of dead creatures. He freaks out when Paragus tries to get him, but Paragus just squeezes his tail to calm him down. As he does, he notices that Broly's clothes are baggy, which suggests that he must have gone ape some time after arriving on this planet. The scout scope shows Broly has a power level of 920, which is higher than Beets, but still not enough to kill all these alien monsters, so he must have turned into a giant ape to do it.
Tumblr media
And this isn't hard to see happening, since the big full moon was the first thing Paragus and Beets noticed when they got here. They knew to avoid looking at it for too long, since they would have lost control of themselves if they transformed, but Broly's fresh out of the incubation tank. I'm not even sure he can talk yet.
Tumblr media
So they found the kid, so now they can leave, right? Wrong. The ship was damaged in the crash, and Beets can't fix it or radio for help. There's only enough supplies for ten days, so Paragus shoots Beets to make it last longer. And this is where the whole "whoever heard of a trustworthy Saiyan?" thing is sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Maybe Beets was trustworthy, but he got betrayed and killed before it would matter. The Saiyans aren't treacherous by nature, it's just that the treacherous ones kill the good ones and end up dominating the culture.
Tumblr media
We then flash forward five years. Paragus and Broly have been long forgotten, and Frieza has summoned all the Saiyans back to Planet Vegeta. Bardock finds the order suspicious, especially when he sees Frieza's flagship orbiting Planet Vegeta. Why gather the Saiyans together at all? If he has special orders for them, he could just communicate them over the radio. It doesn't add up, but Bardock thinks this might be Frieza looking for a way to wipe out the Saiyans. King Cold subjugated the Saiyan people, and Frieza inherited them from Cold, but Frieza has always held the Saiyans in contempt, and the Saiyans have never liked Frieza either. And in the last few years, Frieza's non-Saiyan forces have grown larger, which makes the Saiyans more expendable than ever before. So maybe this is a plot to wipe them all out in a single stroke. But he's still not sure...
Tumblr media
... until one of his buddies mentions that Frieza's men have been asking around about the Super Saiyan Legend. That convinces Bardock that he's on to something. But even if he's right, what can he do about it?
Tumblr media
Not much, but he has an idea. When Bardock goes home, he asks his wife about their son, Raditz. He's been sent into space with Prince Vegeta, so they're off-world. As for their second son, Kakarot, he's almost due to come out of his incubation tank. Unlike the elites, Kakarot is a low-class, so he gets a tank, but it's just sitting in the middle of his parents' house, without the technical staff on duty to maintain it. Bardock intends to steal a space pod and send Kakarot to a planet called "Earth", where he can survive whatever Frieza is planning to do next.
Tumblr media
Gine hates that idea. Given Kakarot's low-class status, he would probably be shot into space as an infiltration baby no matter what, but she doesn't want to do it right after he gets out of the incubation tank. He can't even talk yet. But Bardock thinks Frieza is afraid of a legendary Super Saiyan rising up to oppose him. That's why Frieza has summoned all the Saiyans to Planet Vegeta. He means to wipe them all out, now, before any of them can become powerful enough to defy him later.
Tumblr media
I really love Gine's reaction to this, because to her, the Super Saiyan is just a story, and yet Bardock is saying Frieza will commit genocide over it. It makes sense to us because we saw Goku clobber Frieza on Namek, and then Trunks chopped him in half, and so on. But to Gine this is beyond absurd. This is like hearing that Biden's going to start World War III because he's afraid of Bigfoot.
Tumblr media
"The Super Saiyan? But that's just some dumb fanfic!"
"I know, but Frieza read the whole thing and thinks its real. He left kudos on it and everything."
"It doesn't even have Beets in it! What's the point of a fanfic where Beets isn't making out with every character?!"
"I know, Gine. The guy isn't interested in Beets. I don't get it either."
"Well fuck that guy! If he'd written about Beets getting laid all the time, we wouldn't have to shoot my boy into space!"
Tumblr media
Anyway, they do Bardock's plan, and discuss contingencies on their way to launch. If Bardock's wrong, he'll go out and fetch Kakarot at the earliest opportunity. Gine suggests they all flee together, but Bardock says that won't work. Frieza would just hunt them down with Scouters, so Kakarot's best chance to survive is to go alone.
Tumblr media
So they launch the pod, and Gine is understandably upset about all this. Bardock puts his hand on her shoulder, but that's about all he can do. If he's right, they're going to die soon.
Tumblr media
And Bardock is right, because Frieza's already made up his mind to destroy Planet Vegeta. The tales of Super Saiyans and Super Saiyan Gods are nothing more than stories, with no historical basis. And while Frieza expected as much, he still has all the Saiyans in one place, ready to be destroyed. Besides, they're unruly by nature, and sooner or later, they'll cause him problems, so he's better off killing them here and now. It'll mean cutting his fighting force in half, but he's prepared to accept that loss, even if the Super Saiyan threat is remote.
Tumblr media
And so he does the thing where he comes out of the ship and lights up his finger, etc. This moment has been shown multiple times over the decades, but I think this version is the most visually impressive. The colors look better, and we see more reaction shots from the Saiyans on the surface.
Tumblr media
"Dammit, that hacky story is gonna get us all killed."
Tumblr media
Bardock tries to stop it, but there's nothing he can do. I never really thought about it this way, but it is kind of ironic how Frieza was going to do this no matter what, and yet he was still curious enough about the Super Saiyan Legend that he sent guys down to the planet to ask around about it. If he hadn't done that, then Bardock probably wouldn't have realized what Frieza was up to, and he never would have sent Kakarot to Earth.
And so, the Super Saiyan Legend actually saved Kakarot, allowing him to become the next Super Saiyan, and bring Frieza's fears to reality. Interesting stuff.
Tumblr media
Anyway, what really makes this scene so great is the way Frieza waches the planet explode, and the scouter has a real-time count of Planet Vegeta's population, which rapidly dwindles to zero.
Tumblr media
And that about wraps things up for this part of the movie. We cut to some other planet where Prince Vegeta and Raditz are. Vegeta chose to ignore Frieza's recall order, which ended up saving all their lives. The boys are with three Saiyan men, including Nappa, and they think they might be the only Saiyans left alive. Raditz recalls his mother sending him a message about shooting baby Kakarot into space, but he doesn't care much, since Kakarot was a weakling anyway. Vegeta also has a brother, but he doesn't know or care what happened to him.
And that's all for now. Next time, we'll flash forward to the present day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎂 🥳 🎉 🎈 🎁 🎊 TO YOU
THE MOST LEGENDARY & ICONIC CANDIAN 🇨🇦 ACTOR & MUSICIAN 🎶 IN CINEMA 🎥 & ENTERTAINMENT OF THE WHOLE WORLD 🌎 IN HISTORY
Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on September 2, 1964, the son of Patricia (née Taylor), a costume designer and performer, and Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr. His mother is English, originating from Essex. His American father is from Hawaii, and is of Native Hawaiian, Chinese, English, and Portuguese descent. Reeves' paternal grandmother is of Hawaiian and Chinese descent. His mother was working in Beirut when she met his father, who abandoned his wife and family when Reeves was three years old. Reeves last met his father on the Hawaiian island of Kauai when he was 13.
He is a Canadian actor and musician. He is the recipient of numerous accolades in a career on screen spanning four decades. In 2020, The New York Times ranked him as the fourth-greatest actor of the 21st century, and in 2022 Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Reeves is known for his leading roles in action films, his amiable public image, and his philanthropic efforts.
Born in Beirut and raised in Toronto, he made his acting debut in the Canadian television series Hangin' In (1984), before making his feature-film debut in Youngblood (1986). Reeves had his breakthrough role in the science-fiction comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989), and he reprised his role in the sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991). He gained praise for playing a hustler in the independent drama My Own Private Idaho (1991) and established himself as an action hero with leading roles in Point Break (1991) and Speed (1994). Following several box-office disappointments, Reeves's performance in the horror film The Devil's Advocate (1997) was well received. Greater stardom came with his role as Neo in The Matrix (1999); Reeves became the highest paid actor for a single production for reprising the role in its sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (both 2003).
He played John Constantine in Constantine (2005) and starred in the romantic drama The Lake House (2006), the science fiction thriller The Day the Earth Stood Still and the crime thriller Street Kings (both 2008). He made his feature-film directorial debut with Man of Tai Chi (2013). Following another commercially down period, Reeves made a career comeback by playing the titular assassin in the action John Wick film series (2014–present). He voiced Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 (2019) and Johnny Silverhand in the video game Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) as well as its expansion. He also reprised his roles of Ted in Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020) and Neo in The Matrix: Resurrections (2021). Reeves reunited and toured with his band Dogstar in support of their first album in over two decades, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees (2023).
In addition to his career as an actor and musician, Reeves is the co-writer and creator of the BRZRKR franchise, which started with the original comic book (2021–2023) and since expanded to include numerous spin-offs, including the BRZRKR spin-off The Book of Elsewhere with China Miéville. An avid motorcyclist, Reeves is the co-founder of the custom manufacturer ARCH Motorcycle, and is a co-founder of the production company Company Films with his associate Stephen Hamel.

9 favorite books
Thanks for the tag @daisymae-12!!! Much like you I have read more fanfic than books as of recent, plus I have the very bad fun habit of re-reading books I love rather than starting new ones. So a lot of these I read in middle school/high school but continuously come back to. Apologies in advance for the length. Also, this isn't in ranking order, this is in reverse chronological order of me reading them I've decided.
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston - pretty obvious, but long story short: I've never seen myself so much in a character before meeting Alex Claremont-Díaz. I held out on reading this book when it was first popular b/c I didn't know what it was about and it was "trendy." When I learned what it was about I was like wait, duh, I'd love that. So that'll teach me.
Tattoos on the Heart: The Powers of Boundless Compassion by Father Greg Boyle - Read this my senior year of college for a class and was literally lying on the couch crying reading some of these stories (I don't cry often from books either). These are stories of a Jesuit priest who runs Homeboy Industries, a gang intervention program in LA.
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver - I haven't re-read this since my senior year of high school but I absolutely devoured this book, which is saying something because it was summer reading. This author is blowing up for writing Demon Copperhead, which I haven't read yet, but this story about a missionary family who moves to the Belgian Congo in 1959 was impossible to put down.
Life of Pi by Yann Martel - Also read this in high school for class when I was struggling with religion and figuring out my relationship with it. I found a lot of comfort in this book and the beautiful storytelling.
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini - The second book on this list that made me absolutely SOB when reading (still vividly remember sitting and cyring while reading the chapter at like midnight on a school night alone in a dark kitchen). Beautiful, not sure a book has ever made me feel so much (also loved learning about a different part of the world), don't think I could read it again (but you should absolutely read it once if you're cool with the contents).
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - First up: this author is a huge bigot, full stop, way worse than JKR. So don't read (or if you want to read but don't want to support the author don't buy the book). However, I read this as a middle schooler before knowing his background and it is an all time favorite because of one of its messages: "I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves." Aka this idea about empathy and that to truly understand someone you have to love them - too bad the author missed his own point.
Psion Beta by Jacob Gowans - A favorite dystopian series that's super niche (I think he originally self-published on Amazon before it was common). A plague, super powers, world governments, the Western Hemisphere are the bad guys in an unusual role reversal for books written by Americans, what more could you ask for???
Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart - If you are a nerd and want to feel like a bigger nerd/be proud of that nerdiness this is the series for you. Seriously one of the best YA series out there, plus there's a recent new addition (2019) of them grown up if you missed it!!!
Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan - I love these books so much and could go on forever about them, probably the books I've read the most in life outside of HP (exception being The Lightning Thief-I was a teacher and taught this book so I've read this book like...a minimum of twelve times). I can't wait to bring #1 and #9 from this list together for our massive WIP, "Super Six and the Siren's Call" for the fan fic of the century lmao (co-writing with @read-and-write- and @inexplicablymine).
Wow, I had so much fun choosing this list, thank you!!! If you love one of these books lmk let's talk :)
Tagging @mudbloodpotter05 @read-and-write- @kiwiana-writes @inexplicablymine @14carrotghoul @littlemisskittentoes and anyone else who wants to do this!!! I'm sure some/most of y'all have already been tagged and maybe even posted, I just want to know what y'all are reading :)

Four episodes into rewatching Season One of Picard: some general thoughts.
As I’ve laid out, this season so far challenges our assumptions about Picard, the character, and the world building of the setting in ways that are discomforting but I am not inclined to dismiss them as invalid or “CW edge” - a sort of snarl word to stand in for angst and oppressive bleakness that mimic the complexities of dark, introspective works such as Breaking Bad or the Ur prestige drama: The Sopranos.
This is part of a series of essays reevaluating Star Trek Picard and interrogating the widely held fandom criticism that Picard made the Federation into a Dystopia.
Definitely on a rewatch, I am struck by how well suited Picard the character is for this sort of meta-dialogue. And it very much is a meta-dialogue. Picard is a legacy character, a hero from another era where the contrasts between good and bad were sharper and to some extent, the lines of social conflict were drawn in such a way that people who thought they were heroes are now the villains in someone else’s story.
Picard is a great character to represent this because unlike so many other people, when he is put in the position of villain, Picard’s first instinct is to reason and erudite his way out of it, but his second instinct is to listen empathetically. Picard doesn’t begin and end with doubling down.
Picard is in some sense programmed to seek solutions from within the norms and institutions he is familiar with and comfortable with but season one in particular and to some extent, season three, are teaching him to approach the universe more holistically. Picard is learning to appreciate the limits of power and to recognize that Starfleet is not the right instrument for every problem. More discussion here and here.
I think this is a worthwhile conversation for Star Trek to have. Star Trek is THE science fiction franchise about the virtues of a virtuous institution, an armada of stellar individuals virtuously riding in week after week to save the day upon chrome steeds. Contrast this to Star Wars which has always held institutions, even the Jedi Order itself, in contempt. At best institutions in Star Wars are well intentioned but myopic and prone to being outmaneuvered by opponents who figure out how to weaponize the virtues and proceduralism of the good guys against them. More typically institutions in Star Wars are incompetent and malignant.
That isn’t to say that Star Trek doesn’t question power or is incapable of critiquing its own heroes. A thread from the Star Trek Subreddit catalogs NINE admirals who are villains in just TNG and Insurrection. The list balloons to almost two dozen when TOS, DS9, and the Kelvin timeline are added. Note that this is from 2019 so Discovery and Picard are not included. This also doesn’t include lower ranked villains like Captains, such as Captain Maxwell.
Of course this list does include some explicit subversion of people’s autonomy: alien parasites and such. Others are acting according to their own understanding of what “the good of the many” means. Twice in a hundred years the Federation experiences attempted military coups by those who believe the Federation is too soft to capably deal with its enemies. Admiral Satie was a ferocious defender of the Federation’s ideals as she saw them but in the same way that Senator Joseph MacCarthy was a ferocious defender of American ideals.
Seeing Picard spend four episodes getting dressed down for various oversights is challenging if you’re a longtime fan like me for whom TNG hit at an extremely impressionable time. Yet he consistently models something that I think matters a lot: Picard is defensive but ultimately he is willing to listen and to question his own judgments in good faith.
That more than anything else answers the anxious question at the heart of every crotchety elder millennial, gen xer, and boomer watching Picard: “is this Star Trek?”
Yes.
You have to be willing to question your own assumptions about how well you remember TNG or whether you, the audience member, made the characters into superhumans in your memory, but if you can do this, then this is Star Trek.
As to my other research question of “Did Picard make the Federation into a dystopia?” by now I feel like that too is well answered.
No.
The Federation has always had limitations and been far less than omnipotent or omniscient. I think there are specific situations and contexts in which these limitations are being exposed and interrogated that are making some members of the audience extremely touchy because they are more emotionally invested in the idea of a purified, post-material society free of “sin” as it were. A secular Kingdom of God, ruled over by democratically elected, perfectly wise Philosopher Starship Captains.
It's still a pretty awesome place, it's just that everyone is subjectively instead of objectively moral and are merely doing their best rather than having perfect knowledge. Picard’s season one “apology tour” illustrates this nicely. That season three’s Captain Shaw has made some of the best consequentialist arguments of all time while Picard, Riker, Seven etc. take turns arguing for a sense of ethics rooted in the morality of actions themselves also beautifully illustrates that these are not bad people, they’re just people and they are authentically trying to do the right thing.
The Mystery Plot Evolves
If sinking your teeth into the emotional and moral depth is the first reason to rewatch Picard’s first season, grappling with the metaplot is the second. I too fell victim to finding it confusing and irritating the first time through. What I’m seeing now seems to show that it was laid out with more care and just generally less convoluted than I remember. Maybe it's just because I already know the answer now.
The Disordered are an interesting way to introduce the concept of the Admonition and the origins of Zhat Vash’s intense hatred of AI.
Narek starting to show his dark side in prodding Soji about the inconsistencies in her cover story moves the plot along but also illustrates another reason I’ve just not had much to say about this side of the plot, even though whether or not the mystery makes sense in the end is kind of critical.
The fact of the matter is I hated the romance subplot the first time through and I hate it more knowing that Narek is not a “complex” character, a Romulan protagonist playing the part of antagonist because of corrupting influences. No, he’s a manipulator who is trying to maneuver Soji into putting herself unknowingly in danger. His interest in her secrets is entirely selfish even if raw curiosity is warring with his view of her as a harbinger of doom.
I’ve also been the rebound partner a couple times with people who have come out of relationships defined by nesting dolls of deceit and manipulation. As a consequence, I detest seeing these things on the screen. I can’t do “Reylo” ships or long for the “sad boy” to be fixed. I hate these characters because they inserted poison pills into relationships I found deeply meaningful before those relationships ever began.
So if the next time I address the Romulan snake in the grass, it’s an extended rant don’t be surprised.
Carrying on my Wayward Sons
I’ll close out by saying that I have no idea how much of the season’s script and its developments the actors already had access to or in what order scenes were shot, but the interactions between Raffi and Picard are phenomenal. With the benefit of hindsight and knowing the dark turn of events looming when it's Raffi’s turn to try to reunite with her son, well her trying to talk JL out of going to Vashti just shines all the more.
I think you could read it in a few ways. She clearly already knows why Picard is going to Vashti. On how many levels she knows, it's hard to say. Elnor is the obvious one since she’s only coming along for a ride to Free Cloud to try to talk her own estranged son into letting her back into his life.
The second is that as much as she’s tried to prepare Picard for the realities of life outside the Federation in a post-Hobus star universe, I suspect deep down she is worried that after having just gotten the old JL back, seeing the poverty and seething resentment will break him all over again.
Finally, recruiting a Sister of Absolute Candor would simply confirm for Raffi that Picard is prepared for saving Soji and confronting Zhat Vash to be a suicide mission. He will not be deterred by danger or reason, and that too represents the high likelihood of losing JL again and in a more final way.

Imajica Entertainment: Movie Night Experience – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: The Epic Conclusion of a Beloved Superhero Franchise
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (stylized as Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3) is a highly anticipated American superhero film released in 2023. It is the sequel to the successful Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), and it serves as the 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Directed and written by the talented James Gunn, the film showcases a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Will Poulter, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Linda Cardellini, Nathan Fillion, and Sylvester Stallone.
The movie follows the adventures of the Guardians of the Galaxy as they embark on a daring mission to protect their comrade Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) from the High Evolutionary, portrayed by Chukwudi Iwuji. Filled with action-packed sequences and heartwarming moments, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 takes viewers on an unforgettable journey through the cosmos.
The inception of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 dates back to November 2014 when James Gunn first hinted at his ideas for a third and final installment in the series. In April 2017, he officially announced his return as the writer and director of the film. However, in an unfortunate turn of events, Gunn was fired by Disney in July 2018 due to controversial posts resurfacing on Twitter. Nevertheless, Disney reconsidered its decision, and Gunn was reinstated by October of the same year. His return to the project was publicly revealed in March 2019, after completing work on DC's The Suicide Squad (2021) and its spin-off series Peacemaker (2022).
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Epic Journey of the Guardians of the Galaxy
The Guardians of the Galaxy, a renowned band of intergalactic heroes, have captivated audiences with their thrilling adventures and unique personalities. With a lineup that has expanded and evolved over time, this ragtag group of outlaws has played a crucial role in protecting the galaxy from numerous threats. Let's delve into their epic journey and explore the significant moments that have shaped their story.
The original members of the Guardians of the Galaxy were Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. Together, they formed an unconventional team determined to combat evil and maintain peace across the universe. Their first major challenge came when they joined forces with Yondu Udonta and Mantis to confront the powerful celestial being known as Ego. With Nebula briefly aiding them, this battle marked a turning point in their fight against formidable foes.
In a devastating turn of events, the group faced the wrath of Thanos, a malevolent force seeking to collect the Infinity Stones. Despite their valiant efforts, Thanos succeeded in his quest and unleashed chaos, disintegrating half of all life in the universe. Among his victims were Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, and Groot, leaving Rocket and Nebula as the sole survivors. However, with the demise of Thanos and the destruction of the Stones, Rocket and Nebula found themselves aligned with the Avengers.
In a daring mission, the Guardians, along with the Avengers, utilized the Quantum Realm to travel through alternate universes in an attempt to retrieve the Infinity Stones and reverse the catastrophic events caused by Thanos. Although their mission was not without complications, they successfully gathered the Stones and thwarted the plans of an alternate version of Thanos. Together, they restored balance and saved the universe once again.
Following these triumphs, the Guardians of the Galaxy welcomed Thor into their ranks, embarking on an array of thrilling adventures across the cosmos. Together, they traversed different worlds, encountered allies and adversaries, and faced formidable challenges that tested their strength and resilience.
In a rather unique twist, the team acquired the former abode of "The Collector," the severed and inhabited head of a Celestial named Knowhere, as their new base of operations.
