18/11/2022
Remember the Titans is a 2000 film directed by Boaz Yakin, starring Denzel Washington, which narrates the true events of the american T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
In 1981, a group of former American football coaches and players attend a funeral. Nearly ten years earlier, in the summer of 1971, at the newly integrated T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, Herman Boone, a black coach who was supposed to lead the black high school football team, is assigned to the coaching staff under current white coach Bill Yoast, who previously led the white high school and was named to the Virginia High School Hall of Fame.
On August 15, the players reunite and travel to Gettysburg College, where their training takes place. However, through vigorous training and rigorous athletic training on Boone's part, which includes a morning run to Gettysburg National Cemetery a motivational speech: the team achieves racial harmony and emerges a unified team.
Ten years later, Bertier dies in a car accident caused by a drunk driver after winning the gold medal in the shot put at the Paralympic Games. It is the revelead that it is his funeral attended by the former coaches and players, where Julius, while holding Bertier's mother's hand, leads the team in a sad rendition of "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye". Coach Boone coached the Titans for five more seasons, and later retired, and Coach Yoast assisted Boone for four more years, retiring from coaching in 1990.
The film was released in US cinemas on September 29, 2000 and in Italian cinemas on April 13, 2001.

Remember the Titans Cultural Diversity
Remember the Titans is a classic movie on the fight for integration and collaboration between white and black. Remember the Titans is one of my personal favorite movies. It follows the desegregation of schools, specifically T.C. Williams High School and their head coach Herman Boone at the center of attention. Herman Boone becomes the head coach of the school’s football team which has been coach by a world class white coach for years. From then on it talks of the struggle to integrate and collaborate between coaches, players, people in the school, and the community around the school. This movie speaks on many different topics in which we have covered during class including, segregation, socioeconomic class, gender roles, and stereotyping. In this movie Boone is told to take a job of flipping burgers because they have coaching football covered and that is for white men. This movie also has a little girl who is the daughter of Bill Yoast who loves football. She defies the gender norms of girls liking dolls and dresses and knows a surprising amount about football. Later in the movie you can see her and coach Boone talking about football strategy. The main story line covers the football team which has heavy controversy. White boys and Blacks boys have to work together to make a goo team. They go to camp and learn about each other’s culture and share what they have in common. After a while they see that skin color is just that skin color and their teammates have lots in common with them. You can see a lot of the intertwining culture in this movie. For example, Louie Lastik and Rev share a common taste in music but the music they share is commonly seen as “black” music. Louie Lastic breaks a lot of the barriers that are up between the two races clashing.
When they come back from camp the team sees that the community has not taken well to the integration and even though they have all gotten along and set aside minor differences the community has gone back to “normal.” This movie shows the struggle that a community must go through and how much a truly integrated society can achieve. Though real life has worked on integration and acceptance we still must strive to block out any racism.

Monkeying Around
Remember the Titans is a movie based on the true story of coach Herman Boone. In 1971, T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia was integrated. It follows the players and the town as they go through the struggles of a changing society. To make things worse, coach Herman Boone is named head coach over the current head coach Bill Yoast as a way to help attempt to ease racial tensions among the black community. Earlier that summer, a black person had been shot by a store owner and separation was at an all-time high. As the season goes on, some of the community comes around to the integration faster than others.
Pictured here is Herman Boone, who Remember the Titans is based on.(gettyimages.com)
Bill Yoast stays on as assistant coach and head defensive coordinator, and the two coaches learn to work together. The team exceeded expectations and qualified for the regional championship, putting them on track for the state championship. The opposing teams coach is extremely racist, claiming his players are, “[p]rized bulls that don’t do nothin’ but knock the chocolate out of folks.” It is customary in high school football for coaches to trade game film with each other to help prepare and strategize for the upcoming game. The opposing team’s coach won’t, and tells news reporters, “I’m not gonna do anything to help that monkey.” Before the game, the referees are paid to call the game unfairly, as a way to sabotage the Titan’s and more importantly coach Boone’s chances at a coaching job next year. Coach Yoast steps up and puts his own legacy on the line so the Titans can have a fair game. After they win and the teams are forced to shake hands in the middle of the field. The opposing team’s coach refuses to shake coach Boone’s hand, and as he walks away, coach Boone calls for him and tosses him a banana, as a slap in the face for earlier calling him a monkey.
Here is a screenshot of coach Boone (portrayed by Denzel Washington), tossing the opposing coach the banana.
This movie reminds me of our reading from The Shadow and the Substance, where black people were often portrayed as primitive compared to white people. In our reading, they speak of how African men would be displayed at the World Fairs, and referred to as the missing link, claiming that he was a scientific phenomenon and the middle step in human evolution from monkey to Homo Sapien. Unfortunately, although more frowned upon, name calling among different races is still used to this day. Some still look down on black people as uncivilized, and those individuals would benefit from messages like the one portrayed in Remember the Titans, of unity and acceptance of different cultures.

Remember the Titans (2000)
Remember the Titans is formulaic. Isn't that the case with every football film based on a true story? You can predict where everyone will end up. Does it matter when the results are this crowd-pleasing?
In 1971, coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is assigned to put together a football team for the integrated T. C. Williams High School. The locals are not pleased to see Boone’s predecessor, Bill Yoast (Will Patton) booted down to the post of assistant coach and if that wasn't enough drama, the players seem determined to stay divided among racial lines until he breaks through to them.
I get the appeal of seeing a live game of football but for me, a film about the sport is far more engaging. The camera ensures you never miss the bone-crunching tackle or that amazing play that turns the tide when there's only a second to spare. You don't learn about the players from interviews or newspaper clippings. You get to be there the whole way. “I know that already! That applies to every great sports movie!” you say. And you’re right. What’s this movie got going that other sports movies don’t?
Remember the Titans is filled with underdogs; more than other films of its genre. A new coach automatically falls under extra stringent scrutiny. So does a new team. Boone isn't just a new coach, however. He's a black coach in a predominantly white field. As is his interracial team. Even among themselves, there's tension.
There are many effective human moments as the topic of racism is addressed. We see these young men deal with their prejudices and break barriers are they learn to function as a unit. It isn’t about one side being right and the other being wrong, it’s about a bunch of talented young men who have to learn to work together to unleash their full potential. Seeing the friendships that develop, those that dissolve due to irreconcilable differences, and seeing someone suddenly realize what they believed for years is wrong? That’s movie magic. Whether the ball is being thrown or not, you're completely engaged. Everyone will find someone to relate to and cheer for.
My one criticism is one that’s almost inherent to even the best sports films. Ultimately, you can predict what's going to happen to the players and coaches because what we're seeing is essentially a highlight of a football season within a three-act plot. There's something to be said about needing to adhere to formulas to satisfy the audience. Nevertheless, you can't say it wouldn't have been refreshing to see this reinvent the wheel or break some new ground. I'll also point to the character of Sheryl (Hayden Panettiere) as an element that could've been improved. The performance is good but the character is overwritten.
Remember the Titans is probably loaded with inaccuracies and exaggerations. That goes without saying and ultimately, doesn't matter. The performances are good. Its message is easy to subscribe to, legitimate, and earnest. The game scenes are well shot and the drama is compelling. Is it a little manipulative at times? Maybe, but this just makes it all the more thrilling and inspirational. As far as football movies go, it's among the best. (On DVD, July 5, 2015)

“Remember forever the night they played the Titans”
The 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team that was immortalized in “Remember the Titans” lost another key figure on Thursday.
Former defensive coordinator Bill Yoast died at the age of 94 at a Springfield, Va. assisted living facility, his daughter told The Washington Post. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Yoast, who was played by Will Patton in 2000’s “Remember the Titans,” was the head coach of one of the three schools consolidated to form the integrated T.C. Williams in 1971. As a head coach of a regional champion, Yoast was thought to be a frontrunner for the T.C. Williams job.
Instead, Herman Boone was given the job. Despite having other head coaching job offers in the area, Yoast stuck with the Titans and ended up coaching the defense.
The result was one of the most terrifying units in the country. Yoast’s defense, famously led by captains Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell, posted nine shutouts in 13 games that season, allowing only 113 yards per game and 45 points all season

Motown, Bach and New England
In honor of the 20th anniversary (how in the world has it been that long?!) of my favorite movie of all time, I am linking some of the best clips from the film. Honestly, if I could I would just post the whole movie I would-it’s that good. My assumption is that most people have seen the film, if not here is a short recap. Remember the Titans, is a sports film based on the true story of the integration of a high school football team in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. In fact the real life Titans were a combination of three high schools that came together in 1971. As movies always do, some parts of a story are fictionalized, some seemingly important parts are left out, and some people are portrayed differently than they were in real life. Here are the obituaries for Coach Herman Boone, Coach Bill Yoast, and Julius Campbell a defensive lineman for the team, definitely worth reading. Also, here is a recent article put out about the legacy of the real story.
Here a few clips from the film, Strong Side, Remember the Titans-Final Scene-Goodbye, Remember the Titans-Not Another Yard, Attitude Reflects Leadership.
Aside from the excellent casting, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, film composer Trevor Rabin….there is the incredible soundtrack, which cost Jerry Bruckheimer $1 million. Here’s a playlist of the soundtrack. And the Titan’s song here.
Check out this video Peak Fall Foliage in New England (Experience Autumn), this guy traveled all over New England and compiled his favorite footage of the leaves changing. It’s absolutely beautiful. Every Fall I wish that I lived in Vermont, just for the changing leaves.
And lastly, this piece by Bach is one of my absolute favorites. It is being played by Yo-Yo Ma, who can do no wrong playing a cello. I hope that you enjoy this beautifully shot, short piece. Here’s what Yo-Yo Ma has on his website about The Bach Project: “In August 2018, Yo-Yo Ma began a two-year journey to perform Johan Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello in 36 locations around the world, music that is among the first Yo-yo ever learned when he began playing cello at the age of four. The project is motivated not only by his six-decade relationship with music, but also Bach’s anility to speak to our shared humanity at a time when our civic conversation is so often focused on division.” It is a fascinating project, definitely worth checking out.
And lastly, I do hope that you have an enjoyable weekend.

Remember The Titans
Remember the Titans is a movie based in the 1970’s about a Virginia school becoming integrated. The racial struggles and prejudices are centered on the high school’s football team. Where football wins were prayed for during Sunday Morning mass, the racial tensions on the team were felt throughout the community. Coach Herman Boone was a black man who came to take over the head coach’s position from the former white head coach, Bill Yoast. When most of the white high school players threatened to sit the season, and refused to play for the Boone, Yoast decided to stay as an assistant coach. Both black and white players and coaches were forced to confront each other and their prejudices during their preseason camp. After much reluctance to understand and see each other as equals, the team finally came together both on the field and off. With their sights set on winning the state title, they prepared to take on other teams and their racial hate towards African Americans. In the end, they won the season and helped bridge the racial gap to further equality in the education system and community.
This feel good movie discussed important racial struggles that were a hard reality for many during the civil rights movement. One of the most famous and moving scenes in the movie is where Coach Boone runs the players out to the site of where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought.
“This is where they fought the battle of Gettysburg. Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight that we are still fighting among ourselves today. This green field right here, painted red, bubblin' with the blood of young boys. Smoke and hot lead pouring right through their bodies. Listen to their souls, men. I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred destroyed my family. You listen, and you take a lesson from the dead. If we don't come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I don't care if you like each other of not, but you will respect each other. And maybe... I don't know, maybe we'll learn to play this game like men.”
-Coach Boone
He uses this fight as a lesson to teach the players that numerous men fought and died for the same war they were waging amongst each other presently. If those players couldn’t overcome their racial differences, then those brave souls died for nothing on that tragic battlefield at Gettysburg.
I believe that this lesson by Coach Boone still rings true today and needs to be remembered. History should serve as a lesson and teach us that racial equality has been a struggle for many, many years. Wars have been fought, sons and daughters have been lost, laws have been made. And yet, society seems to continue to favor white privilege and support racial inequality. In an article written by Gregory Jay titled Who Invented White People, he proposes the question of: what keeps racism alive in America? His article addresses this question and answers by stating,
“Today, the movement against racism has had the unexpected effect of letting whiteness of the hook. Over and over we hear people say that ‘race shouldn’t matter,’ that we should, or even do, have a ‘color blind society’. What has happened, I think is that we have instead created a blindness to whiteness, or been blinded by whiteness itself.” (Gregory, p. 98).
Rewatching Remember the Titans and the Gettysburg scene reminded me that we cannot be blind to racism. It is unfortunately still alive today and it our duty to ensure that the struggles and progresses of past civil rights heroes do not go forgotten in vain. Rather we should celebrate their work and continue fighting for actual equality among all.

Herman Boone, the T.C. Williams High School football coach famously played by Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans, has died. He was 84.
The high school’s football boosters group announced Boone’s passing on Twitter on Wednesday.
“It is with great sadness that we share the sad news of the passing of former Head Football Coach Herman Boone who lead the Titans to the State Championship in 1971,” the tweet said.
Boone had reportedly been battling caner, according to ESPN.
Remember the Titans, which also starred Will Patton as Boone’s assistant coach Bill Yoast, was released in 2000 and told the story of Boone’s first year coaching the Titans football team in 1971.
He took the team to the Virginia AAA state championship that year, winning after an undefeated season. As portrayed in the movie, Boone brought the team together to overcome racial tensions in the Alexandria City Public School district, which merged its three public high schools into one integrated school that same year.

Boone, who was the first black football coach in Northern Virginia, coached the Titans at T.C. Williams until 1979, when he was controversially fired.
Nonetheless, Boone remains a beloved figure.
“He touched many lives and hearts across the world. He was inspirational for so many people, including me as one of his former students,” said Alexandria City superintendent of schools Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., according to ESPN.

“Alexandria City Public Schools was fortunate to have him as an icon at such a critical time in our history. He will be dearly missed,” Hutchings added.
Boone’s death comes about seven months after Yoast’s, who passed away in May of this year at 94, and whom Boone called the “best friend he ever had.”
“Bill was not going to allow racial differences to exist in this city,” Boone said when Yoast died. “He and I found a way to talk to each other and trust each other.”

Remember The Titans
The Boaz Yakin, Walk Disney drama “Remember the Titans” was released on September 23, 2000. The film is based off the integration of a local Virginia high school in 1971, with the integration of the football team the students and staff are forced to work together to achieve a common goal.
The movie follows the newly integrated team through their season under Herman Boone, the new African American head coach and Bill Yoast, the White assistant coach as they learn to respect one another, work together and have a championship season. The movies touches on the civil rights movement, integration and white privilege.
The movie is based off the real events that occurred in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971 and the integration of T.C. Williams High School. Many have been unsatisfied with the lack of truth displayed in this movie. This correlates closely with the performance art pieces that were discussed in class. The author and director are allowed to present the facts and material to persuade the audience and viewer of another version of the truth that is not as accurate. It also connects to Mirzoeff’s “The Shadow and the Substance” because there is a perceived truth behind the photos and videos and although they may not be accurate, society has accepted them and have molded them into the historic truth we teach to future generations. The following clip shows some of the inaccuracies of the movie, some are more substantial than others, but this proves that the way the movie presented the facts were screwed, dramatized and inaccurate.

This movie is an example of how we, as a society, trusts images and the media as proof of ideas and scientific reality. Media promotes what society wants to see even if it covers the truth. This reminds me of the satirical performance art pieces that we discussed in class and how one chooses the story that is presented and can bend and twist the truth. Even though the truth may have been partially
Nonetheless, “Remember the Titans” showcases white privilege and has the characters realize that they have some advantages that others do not. This coincides with the Invisible nap sack by Peggy McIntosh, there are multiple scenes that not only pinpoint white privilege. It also discusses the negative stereotypes that much of the White population thought and how they resented integration and mistreated people of color. This film emphasis that many people of color and minorities are mistreated by the white folk and that has been a constant theme of this class. There are many scenes that I could have embedded to emphasize this, but rather than focusing on the hate that is shown in the movies, I will attach a scene to discuss the hopes and the goal we, as a society strive for.

Remember the Titans
Remember the Titans follows the story of the T.C. Williams High School Football program of Alexandria, Virginia during the year 1971. To the dismay and uproar of many of the white citizens of Alexandria, the high school was integrated. The head coach of the football team, Bill Yoast was replaced by Herman Boone a black football coach.
One of the many stories in the film have much to do with perception that is rooted in “tradition”. When I write “tradition” I mean the way that stereotypes have been handed down from generation to generation. I reference a section in the film where an exchange occurred between Petey and Ray. Ray’s perception of what it is to be a black family is to have an absent-non-working father. Black men being cast in this light has become part of our index; non-working or uncivilized only “…controlled by force” (Mirzoefff, 116).
youtube
The photograph of “The Scourged Back” is a testament of this it shows the inferiority of the black man and this is something that Ray speaks to as he engages Petey.
Through their interaction and growth together the Titans were able to forge bonds changing the perception that was systematically etched into their psyche that separate is better. Their convergence and bond building forced the immediate conglomeration to view the irony in such divisive rhetoric.
By bringing the archive to the forefront the Titans were able to pinpoint the irony in the racist views of the with the accomplishments of a mixed team that forged relationships that last beyond the football field. In essence the Titans used “...irony to counter the archive” (Mirzoeff, 123)
