Remember the Titans (2000)
Tumblr media
Remember the Titans is formulaic. Isn't that the case with every football film based on a true story? You can predict where everyone will end up. Does it matter when the results are this crowd-pleasing?
In 1971, coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is assigned to put together a football team for the integrated T. C. Williams High School. The locals are not pleased to see Boone’s predecessor, Bill Yoast (Will Patton) booted down to the post of assistant coach and if that wasn't enough drama, the players seem determined to stay divided among racial lines until he breaks through to them.
I get the appeal of seeing a live game of football but for me, a film about the sport is far more engaging. The camera ensures you never miss the bone-crunching tackle or that amazing play that turns the tide when there's only a second to spare. You don't learn about the players from interviews or newspaper clippings. You get to be there the whole way. “I know that already! That applies to every great sports movie!” you say. And you’re right. What’s this movie got going that other sports movies don’t?
Remember the Titans is filled with underdogs; more than other films of its genre. A new coach automatically falls under extra stringent scrutiny. So does a new team. Boone isn't just a new coach, however. He's a black coach in a predominantly white field. As is his interracial team. Even among themselves, there's tension.
There are many effective human moments as the topic of racism is addressed. We see these young men deal with their prejudices and break barriers are they learn to function as a unit. It isn’t about one side being right and the other being wrong, it’s about a bunch of talented young men who have to learn to work together to unleash their full potential. Seeing the friendships that develop, those that dissolve due to irreconcilable differences, and seeing someone suddenly realize what they believed for years is wrong? That’s movie magic. Whether the ball is being thrown or not, you're completely engaged. Everyone will find someone to relate to and cheer for.
My one criticism is one that’s almost inherent to even the best sports films. Ultimately, you can predict what's going to happen to the players and coaches because what we're seeing is essentially a highlight of a football season within a three-act plot. There's something to be said about needing to adhere to formulas to satisfy the audience. Nevertheless, you can't say it wouldn't have been refreshing to see this reinvent the wheel or break some new ground. I'll also point to the character of Sheryl (Hayden Panettiere) as an element that could've been improved. The performance is good but the character is overwritten.
Remember the Titans is probably loaded with inaccuracies and exaggerations. That goes without saying and ultimately, doesn't matter. The performances are good. Its message is easy to subscribe to, legitimate, and earnest. The game scenes are well shot and the drama is compelling. Is it a little manipulative at times? Maybe, but this just makes it all the more thrilling and inspirational. As far as football movies go, it's among the best. (On DVD, July 5, 2015)

No spolier.. The Punisher (1989)
Tumblr media
Even if you’re a hardcore fan of the Marvel movies, I doubt you'll enjoy the earliest cinematic attempt at bringing The Punisher to life. It picks up towards the end where we get some of that trademark 80’s action but nothing makes this film memorable. At least I will give it this; if you are familiar with the character they jump right into the story and deliver the dead criminals to your doorstep immediately.
5 years ago, Frank Castle (Dolph Lundgren, who has maybe a dozen lines) saw his family get blown to bits in a fiery car bomb explosion. Ever since he’s become the mysterious vigilante known as “The Punisher”. 125 murders later and the crime families are getting desperate. That’s when the Yakuza come in and make their move. Frank Castle’s one-man war against the criminal underworld has suddenly taken a new turn when the crime families come under attack, from each other.
Understandably, The Punished is grim and serious. Too bad Dolph Lundgren makes him about as interesting as a bowl of cold spaghetti... without sauce. Some one-liners, an indication that he's unhinged and has begun to love what he's doing would've done wonders. This movie is missing what its spiritual successors like John Wick and Taken have: overwhelming odds that drench you in a cold sweat and bad guys you love to hate. Castle's family isn't developed enough for us to love them. Lundgren's wooden performance can't bridge the gap. The stakes? they feel low. When the Punisher can stand inside of a building, flames all around him and just stare menacingly before the edifice gets vaporized like it was made out of dynamite, it's obvious he's invincible. None of the bad guys can aim, their peripheral vision sucks, and they run around like teenagers in a Friday the 13th movie just waiting to be picked off.
There are attempts to make The Punisher a complex character with sequences where he contemplates his role in society, meditates, and has nightmares about his family. There's an attempt to insert humour via a goofy sidekick called Shake (Barry Otto). His character also gives some much-needed direction to Castle. Otherwise he (and the audience) would have no idea where to go next. Too bad he's not funny and ultimately more plot device than human being. Some of the other side characters are promising, like Frank’s former partner and some of the crime bosses, but nearly everyone is given dialogue only so you can tell who just got their brains blown out.
When you finally reach the second half, things start to get more fun. People get killed in ridiculous ways (best death belongs to a guy who gets skewered) so you can enjoy yourself with the movie or at its expense. Turns out The Punisher can see through walls and bend reality to make everyone around him so incompetent their guns are worthless. Look forward to some ninjas and an awkward alliance he only agrees to so justice can be served. It all makes it worth sitting through those initial 45 minutes.
The Punisher isn’t great, but it has its moments. I’d say it’s at about... 50/50. I can picture it as a guilty pleasure if you overlook the bland acting and uncharismatic hero. At least it's got wall-to-wall action eventually. Some laughs too. Castle must have one of the strongest throwing arms I’ve ever seen. From any angle, this guy can imbed a knife into someone’s skull with such ease you'd think he's fighting men made of butter. It ended on a high note, which prevents me from hating it. I can’t endorse it but if you enjoyed the film, we can agree on a couple of scenes, I'm sure. (On DVD, March 25, 2015)
