MPV Tehran Type, 1972. The product of a rare collaboration between Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen who were commissioned by the German government (under Chancellor Willy Brandt) to create a gift for 12-year-old Crown Prince Rezza Pahlavy, the son of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran. Designed as a bespoke desert-racing vehicle which would assist the young Prince to learn to drive, the Tehran was powered by a rear-mounted Volkswagen engine. The car was supplied with two keys, a silver key that limited the Prince to 30km/h or a gold key that allowed full power and a top speed of 170km/h. Since the fall of the Shah it has been on display as part of the collection at the National Car Museum of Iran as it is considered part of Iran's national heritage. The museum also houses other cars once owned by the last Shah of the Pahlavi Dynasty, including sports cars, limousines, motorcycles, and carriages.

Ledger art and indigenous cultural continuity
Tumblr media
Wooden Leg's ledger book, 1879-1881
Ledger art is part of a long tradition of Native people documenting their history on their own terms. Many Plains Native communities started chronicling events pictorially on materials like rocks and buffalo hides. Beginning in the mid-19th century, they used pages of ledger books obtained from settlers.
An example of adaptation and agency, ledger art is deeply embedded in the sociopolitical context of a given time. In the face of mass removal, assimilation efforts, and other genocidal actions taken by the U.S. government, Native communities found ways to continue observing their traditions and cultural practices using what was around them––in this case, repurposing found pages of ledger books when materials like buffalo hides became scarce.
Depicting everything from scenes of warfare to courtship, ledger art books tell readers about the memories, values, and presence of the communities who authored them. The images are drawn with a variety of materials, including colored pencils, crayons, and ink...

I’m gonna assume that was a wrong blog moment because there’s no #not a heritage post tag or anything but. And I dread to ask this. What else has happened?
Oh yeah that post was part of my documented descent into madness over something that just happened.
To keep it short, the German Government is about to collapse in on itself because one (1) guy was fired (the secretary of Finances, Christian Lindner), thus breaking apart a coalition, thus breaking apart the entire government, thus probably leading to a new election in march. Which, if current trends say anything, is gonna go great for the right.
So anyways all hell is currently breaking loose just as I was getting over the despair of another Trump Presidency. But I’m literally chill. I’m literally calm. See how calm I type this? Would a Guy who isn’t totally chill type like this? Exactly.

Could I suggest a section of books featuring people of colour? Ik you have a few books with them as main characters Id love to see them all in one place, thank you!
hello! we’ve been pulling together some guides for awhile now to highlight more facets of our collection, and in the non-fiction guide we have two lists you might enjoy browsing!
Centering BIPOC+Queer Stories & Histories
Go Global (non-fic about queer folks worldwide, outside of the USA - not exclusively POC, but quite a lot is)
I realize you probably weren’t referring to Non-Fiction in your question but I wanted to highlight those anyways. for Fiction there’s a lot more we could do in future, but for now we do have this one
Two-Spirit & Indigiqueer Stories

Bentley T-Series, 1965. The oldest surviving T-Series has been restored and returned to the factory where it was made to become part of the Bentley Heritage Collection. Chassis number SBH1001 was used as a company trials car and featured in the original press coverage following the model's launch at the 1965 Paris Salon de l’Auto. The car was discovered after many years in storage and recommissioned over 18 months. In order to keep the T-Series as original as possible a ‘repair over replace’ philosophy was adopted. The Bentley was even reunited with its former press office registration number of 1900 TU.

Los Bailadores Zapatistas and the Latino Native American Cultural Center
Last week, the Latino-Native American Alumni Alliance (LANA3) gathered on campus to celebrate more than 50 years of the Latino Native American Cultural Center (LNACC) at the University of Iowa.
In 1971, three students—Rusty Barceló, Ruth Pushetonequa, and Tony Zavala—founded the the Chicano Indian American Cultural Center, later renamed the Latino Native American Cultural Center (LNACC). In it’s five-decade history LNACC has hosted events like cookouts, powwows, and dances; published literary magazines and newsletters; held rallies, boycotts, and protests; and sponsored a variety of other educational and social programs.

The Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives recently acquired new materials from LNACC, including these beautiful dresses handmade by students in Los Bailadores Zapatistas, a baile folklórico troupe on campus. Baile folklórico encompasses many different types of traditional folk dance stemming from various regions of Mexico and cultural traditions, often with Indigenous and Spanish influences.

Los Bailadores Zapatista’s was formed at University of Iowa in the mid-1970s and aimed to “increase the education level and understanding of mestizo dancing and music, and to share our mestizo culture with the university and community population.” Los Bailadores performed on campus and throughout Iowa and the Midwest, often accompanied by the singing group El Conjunto Chicano. They visited other campuses and performed at community events and festivals. In 1978 they attended the National Ballet Folklórico festival in Kansas, and six students traveled to Mexico that summer to learn traditional dances.

Celina Espinoza, the groups instructor, taught the other members how to sew costumes, which are representative of traditional dance attire worn in different regions of Mexico. The group performed dances from the states of Jalisco and Veracruz, as well as from northern regions of Mexico and what is now the Southwestern United States.

Los Bailadores Zapatistas was just one of several student organizations affiliated with LNACC that brought Chicano art, music, and culture to audiences on the University of Iowa campus and beyond. To learn more about Los Bailadores and the Latino Native American Cultural Center, visit us in person or online at the Iowa Digital Library, check out our past blog posts on LNACC, and see the full finding aid to this collection here.
