Independence Day (1996)

Aliens invade. Earth (but mostly America) fights back.

 This film has some good actors and some others who aren’t so good. Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are probably the two best suited for their roles in this film although an American president who cares enough about his people to risk his own life seems a bit far-fetched in today’s world. Goldblum has a habit of playing scientists in unreal situations but at least he does a great job of it.

 One of the actors that I wasn’t so keen on was Will Smith. I like him more in other things but in this particular film the role didn’t seem to fit him, for one thing he had a few comedy lines which floundered but he was too silly to appreciate any of his more serious moments. The women in the film were all but completely ignored or just used as plot devices to be used to strengthen the male’s roles. There didn’t even appear to be any female pilots fighting the invaders. Furthermore, despite being a global invasion, the action was centred entirely on America, but then that’s to be expected. If genocide was the only answer then at least we got to see it done by the experts; an irony made all the more potent by calling the film ‘Independence Day’. That’s not to say they are the worst culprits of this but the unwavering patriotism of the film felt incredibly misplaced when taking into account the past few centuries the country is built on.

 There are a fair few main characters in the film which was good by the end because it meant that some of them could be killed off to more personally ground the alien’s initial attack. The effects were also very effective which was important because there were a lot of long action sequences which wouldn’t have been anywhere near as effective if the CGI had been of a lower quality.

 The science in the film was an important narrative factor but it was questionable at best. Even the core basis of some of the scenes didn’t make sense. For one thing the aliens are supposedly there to use up all of Earth’s resources and they choose to do that by incinerating cities into inhabitability; not terribly economic. Goldblum says in the film that the shields will be down for only a matter of minutes which turns out to be about half an hour. The other thing that was the most irritating is for the happy ending to occur they had to see a blip on the radar screen to find where the ship crashed. In the first crash two out of three actual alien pilots died but they manage to crash the saucer with little experience and no guidance but survive somehow. Also that blip on the radar screen was definitely them, there was no way it could have been one of the millions of fragments from the giant mothership which was just blasted to bits which would be raining bits into the atmosphere all over the place. It made no sense at all but at least they made it back home for some cheesy one-liners.

 5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-

 -When David is searching for his wife’s number the name of the street she’s on can be seen briefly as “Heresheis” (Here she is).

-The first showings of the film happened on the 2nd of July 1996 which is when the events of the film begin.

-The countdown to the bomb detonation at the end of the film is set for 30 seconds but it actually takes 33 seconds of screen time.
