@just-another-linguist and @melestasflight both requested Fingon which was v exciting. Fingon is one of the characters that really stuck with me the first time I read the Silm, but I’ve never actually drawn him. In my mind this is like a Valinor-era Fingon!
#fingon#silmarillion#silm art#silmarillion fanart#tolkien fanart#candlesart#here down in the valley#I’d started reading the silm after I’d just finished reading this v extensive aragorn&legolas series#that mostly just involved one of them getting whumped and the other having to rescue him#it was a fantastic time. ‘mellon’ was possibly in the title#anyway it was pure h/c w a side of road trips and so when fingon went on his road trip to rescue maedhros#my brain immediately supplemented the like paragraph of description w the tens of thousands of words of a&l fic I’d just read#which. given that my first read of the silm was mostly just a blur of names and locations#made fingon and his rescue incredibly memorable

After Angband, Maedhros had a complicated relationship with his hair for a long while. The thing he once used to cherish and carry with pride, inherited from the mother he had left behind, was now tainted with memories of unwanted attention and derogatory touch.
After his rescue, it had to be cut short for the sake of his recovery, and he could never quite figure out whether he was more hurt or relieved by the act. It was Fingon, during those times filled with anxiety and doubt and shame, who helped him learn to accept his own appearance again– from the stump of his right arm and the scars littered across his freckled body to the locks of copper hair, ever so slowly regrowing to their former glory.
And little by little, the lingering memories of malevolent hands harshly yanking at his scalp were replaced by the feeling of tender hands carefully braiding familiar golden ribbons into his hair, once again beloved.
#so basically#they are in love and i love them very much#just don't think about how during the peaceful days of valinor they used to spend days just sitting around and braiding each other's hair#and after his rescue maedhros could never do that again#or maybe curufin–#after seeing his brother moping around all day sad because he could no longer braid his bf's hair#–engineered his a prosthetic hand to help him do just that#who knows not me#fun fact i spent all day yesterday drawing this-- no literally i didn't do anything else please send help#the silmarillion#silmarillion#maedhros#nelyafinwe#maitimo#russandol#fingon#findekano#russingon#why do they have to have so many names my god#maedhros x fingon#fingon x maedhros#silmarillion fanart#russingon fanart#maedhros fanart#fingon fanart#idk what to tag here i'm gonna be honest#art#my art

Russingon being an incestuous couple is so fucking interesting to me for what it represents narratively. (Yes, I know they are not canonically a couple. No, I do not care, because I do believe the coding is on purpose. Even if it’s accidental, it’s still there.)
If you don’t have a lot of experience with incest in other fiction (for example: the staple gothic horror), incest usually represents deviance. That’s just what it says on the tin: diverting from norms. Usually in a bad way. Deviance can be narratively treated as bad or wrong, and there is plenty of deviance from our meta societal norms with these two, but I digress. I don’t want to talk about that today.
I want to talk about subversion, and the deviance that is sometimes good, actually, and the message that sometimes you must break norms to do good.
[PS guys if you read all this and want to add your thoughts please do! This is kind of half-baked and I’d love to see more opinions because I’ve not seen anyone talk about this much.]
They are so fucking fascinating, because they are deviant! They are! Their entire relationship is baffling politically because of the Finwëan house feuds. More importantly, they have individual deviances that this relationship is telling you to pick up on.
.
Maedhros is a Kinslayer. Maedhros is also arguably the most heroic one of his siblings.
.
No, we can’t burn the ships. How the fuck are we gonna get Fingon over here?
No, I have to go parley with Morgoth.
I have to abdicate the crown because I’m becoming something I don’t want to be.
No, I have to put myself in front of everyone else. I have to hold Himring so the rest of Beleriand doesn’t get nuked.
I have to summon everyone for the Nirnaeth.
.
And then after Fingon dies in the Nirnaeth, Maedhros (as we all know) goes fully off the rails—which is to say, he becomes fully Fëanorian. He goes back to the norm for his family.
There are more Kinslayings. He tries once to save two twin children, and that’s it. He gives up. There is no more hope. Maglor is responsible for taking in the next set. Maglor also wants to beg the Valar for forgiveness, and maybe Maedhros would’ve seen the sense in that once, but instead he becomes the second coming of his father and dies burning, clutching onto his Oath.
The deviance from Fëanorian standards was the only thing keeping him from becoming a monster for all that time.
.
Fingon is also (very likely) a Kinslayer. He’s also the family extrovert and hope incarnate.
Unlike Aredhel and Turgon, he does not seclude himself for his own protection. He does the opposite.
.
No, we can’t just stay here in Aman. We need to protect the other half of our people??
No, we actually have to get Maedhros. Fine, I’ll do it myself then. I’ll reach out to the gods while I’m at it, since none of you will.
Of course we’re going to join every battle. Of course we’re going to help hold down Beleriand.
If I have to face evil alone I suppose I will, then.
.
And he dies when he’s alone against those Balrogs. Fingon is also like his father in many ways—but in some ways he is not. He is brighter, sometimes. He is hope incarnate in the worst of places.
.
I’m far from the first person to acknowledge that what Maedhros and Fingon have going on is a very strong message to never give up hope. But like—not just that. What kills me is that, you know, the hope and the heroism and the goodness is the deviance.
They like each other while most of the Noldor are off getting doomed or fighting with their relatives. You get to those little bits where it mentions Maedhros and Fingon still keeping up their friendship and you kind of have to think “damn, at least some people still genuinely love each other in the midst of all this horror.” It’s sweet. And yet it’s deviant.
And that’s weird, right? Usually deviance is bad. But I think here it’s more neutral. Just presented as: this is not the common option, not the norm. It’s not the common option, but it leads to one of the kinder relationships in the Silm.
The Silm wants you, the reader, to take away that you should have hope and goodness, even when everything around you is hell. Even when it is the hard option. When it becomes hardest to hold up light and help others, that is when it’s needed most.
It will be scary sometimes to be hopeful, and that’s okay. It will be scary to extend yourself. It will be scary to trust and to defend others. That’s okay. Do it fucking scared and keep doing it.
#incest was prob the weirdest way to do this message so idk if I think there’s authorial intent here#but. it’s still fun to read into subtext and pick apart the book#silmarillion#russingon#maedhros#fingon#this was like a little puzzle for me#I spent so long thinking about Fingon because he’s not as clear cut#these two are so deeply compelling. why are you like this guys#if there’s typos ignore them I’m Eepy#I’ve tried to make sure there are no egregious ones but knowing me I forgot an important word somewhere#btw if I start seeing arguments about incest morality please read the room. this is not about that#essay tag

the idea of the peredhel twins having heightened senses due to their maia blood is one of the concepts ive seen floating around that i really like, so here's my take on it combined with the feanorians (+ fingon) lingering about as houseless spirits that i explored some time ago in an old inktober post 😌
houseless spirits see all, but they can't interact with the world around them so i suppose that makes for quite a static existence...but compared to an oathbound eternity in Mandos (sans Fingon??), i like to imagine they'll stay a little longer to watch over those left behind, just to make sure they're doing alright 👍🏻
some more lighthearted bonuses cuz why not:
#silmarillion#maedhros#maglor#kidnap fam#elrond#elros#silmarillion comic#itd be pretty freaky to see injured ghost dudes lurking around but honestly i think after sirion its just another monday to the the twins#maglor has an inkling of whats going on but maedhros shrugs it off as kids having overactive imaginations#fingons here to mourn over maedhros' decline but also to make sure turgons great grandkids are doing aite#i despise colouring 😭😭#peredhel twins#sons of feanor#celegorm#caranthir#curufin#fingon#ambarussa#amrod#amras#mnm's dysfunctional family#noldor#amon ereb#silm#the silmarillion#the silmarillion fanart#elves#sakasakart#silm art#ghosts

You have to give it to Maedhros to hear about Lúthien and Beren's theft victory and be like LOVE! love is how we will win !!!! And go and plan a huge battle plan with Fingon. Because he believed in the cause! He truly believed that love would be enough. And then Fingon died. And everything went to shit and he stopped caring. Because love actually matters not in these lands. Because Fingon gave him another life, and Maedhros' failure took his as payment. Because all he has left now is the Oath. And death.
#you can interpret love as anything you want here#there is more than romantic spectrum#im sorry but he Stopped Hoping after Fingon died. thats the corner stone of his disgrace#they make me INSANE#HE MAKES ME INSANE#chews on concrete#maedhros#fingon

Gil-galad the last Elven High King
And a close up
"Gil-galad was an Elven king
Of him the harper sadly sing
The last whose realm was fair and free
Between the Mountains and the Sea."
- from" The Fall of Gil-galad
Here is the line art of my next Elven Lord in Armor.
Here is the link to Elrond of that serie!
I wanted to give Gil- galad the look of a tragic hero. He is the last of a long ruling line and he is a pillar for the Elven in the second age.
And I wanted to make him look as nice as possible. Like a good boy.
I also made him look very youthful for a better effect I imagine that he is painted like that:
" a youthful hero who defeated sauron."
I know sauron wasn't really defeated and gil-galad didn't do it alone.
For colors I'm conflicted I would love a golden-autumn theme for him but he is not described like that. More for maedhros then
Soo I'm trying to go for a white-gold look with maybe burnt orange here and there.
Sneaking in the autumn.
As for Hair color. I really love brunett Gil-galad. It fits my image of him the most.
And his weapon Aeglos
I don't think I did this spear justice but I try to go for a brilliant white silver blade to white gold at the end.
I love the description from the game: "Shadow of war"
Gil-galad wields a well made Spear
The orcs will fear my point of Ice
When he sees me in Fear of Death
He will know my Name
Aeglos
Well hope you guys like my Gil-galad ❤️

3310 - Morgoth cult publicly reappears.
3319 - Downfall of Numenor. Tar-Miriel leads a greater force of the Faithful away.
(green // blue means two main options, red means i need to think about it more)
The main details I'm figuring out right now are
does Celebrimbor still die at Eregion - I don't think he's getting captured/tortured, but he could still die in the battle. On the other hand, he could probably survive by using Narya & Lomion using Nenya, but that would definitely have repercussions further down the line
how does Idril's deal work - I'm currently thinking of Idril exchanging the location of Gondolin for her family's guaranteed safety, because it seems in character for Reverse Idril? But on the other hand, even if I limit it to immediate family at the time of the oath (tuor, turgon, earendil) then idk where turgon dies? Maybe Maglor can kill him but that seems kind of random
where and how does Turgon die
how does Prince Elrond's character even work
how does Numenor still fall when factoring in Prince Elrond - I'm thinking that the morgoth death cult gained enough traction during the time sauron was there that even after Elrond kicks him out, the cult still sticks around and reemerges later? The Fall still happens, but they never go to attack valinor and there's a good deal more Faithful (maybe 40-60%?)
#silm#silmarillion#not art#reverse gondolin au#basically elrond is giving me a Lot of trouble here#i tacked an extra 30 years onto the FA (so the SA dates are mostly shifted up by 30 years to balance it out; hence elros being king in SA 2#this means e&e were adults during the Fall of Gondolin and the war of wrath and all#so instead of 'kind as summer' elrond of the last homely house in rivendell#we have gondolithrim veteran/dragonslayer Prince Elrond of Imladris Stronghold#and later the Bastion of the Faithful of Numenor#ironically enough he turned out way more feanorian when not raised by feanorians#instead of sirion e&e's defining Childhood Trauma was the gondolin kinslaying#in which mae and aredhel duel to the death while screaming at each other about fingon's fate and the Oath#and argon and elenwes deaths on the helcaraxe#also elwing fully died trying to protect them in this one#and then e&e were like 20something and sons/grandsons of two Lords durign the FoG so obviously they ended up fighting there too#and then again at the war of wrath#and by the mid SA elrond has already lived through so many wars he's running rather low on hope#so Prince Elrond still tries to be kind but is also substantially more willing to threaten people if need be#after eregion he founds imladris as a haven but also an impenetrable fortress#he saw the fall of gondolin and he knows that rivendell couldn't last forever#but he believes he can make it last long enough to defeat sauron first#or at least push him back so that the refugees of eregion can rebuild and survive#meanwhile celebrimbor takes up the last homely house role#but yeah Prince Elrond is pretty interesting#he intervenes more with numenor bc hes watching them self destruct and knows (bc foresight) exactly what would happen#so he tries (eventually in vain) to prevent it by disowning and exiling ar pharazon#and later exiling sauron around the time of the burning of nimloth#but it's too late and the morgoth cult already gained enough traction#on the other hand there's a lot more Faithful led by tar-miriel

I think it's interesting how we judge the outcomes of the battles of Beleriand when the elves are up against a foe that, objectively speaking, cannot be defeated by elven might. Like, you can say the outcome of this battle or that battle might have been different, but it seems like there is no way to defeat Morgoth without drawing on the gods and also breaking the land itself.
I think there's a way that this turns questions of strategy into questions of honor. The question "how do we best defeat Morgoth?" has a very simple answer ("you don't"), and I think by the end of the first age most of the elves know that. So there's that feeling I get that the real questions of the latter battles are more along the lines of doing the right thing than doing a sensical thing. Is it more honorable to try to hold out for as long as possible against an unstoppable force, or to go out in a blaze of glory? Is it more honorable to retreat and save what men you can, or to rush in and die alongside your men who are being slaughtered?
#am i saying something obvious here#lena speaks#the silmarillion#thinking about how the hopelessness of it all affects the narrative#and the way that the people who end up. being seen as fully heroic at the end. are the people who take the blaze of glory death#often at least#also my girl fingon did his best is my point as well
