NDIS Services in Fawkner and Hume
NDIS services Fawkner provide individuals with disabilities with support to increase their independence, access new skills and live the life they want. Physio Inq OT provides a range of NDIS services including assistive technology, home modifications and capacity building assessments.
Despite its great potential, the NDIS is plagued with issues. Its neoliberal ideology has led to privatization of disability care and services.
Moreland
Morelandâs vibrant open spaces offer many accessible activities and experiences. The AJ Simpson Park in Fawkner, for example, boasts scenic walking trails and accessible picnic areas. Similarly, Edgars Creek Reserve in Hume offers wheelchair-accessible pathways and nature play spaces.
Two centuries of farming and then urban development have greatly changed Morelandâs natural landscape. Stands of highly significant original (remnant) vegetation are scattered and fragmented; traditional land management practices have ceased and exotic weeds have emerged; native fauna has been dislocated and is often now only found in captivity; and creek corridors have had their habitats modified.
Wetlands are important for biodiversity and community health and well-being. The City has many wetlands including the ephemeral floodplain at Coburg Lake, the Merri-Edgars Creek confluence, Jones Park and Hosken Reserve as well as the Herbert Street Living Stream in Oak Park.
The protection of large trees is essential for their habitat value and for a number of wildlife species, particularly birds and mammals. These animals require hollows for nesting and shelter. The City is establishing a register of the most significant trees within Morelandâs planning scheme on public and private property to facilitate their protection.
Hume
Hume residents with disabilities can access a variety of local services and supports from our community-based organisations. These include speech pathology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, positive behaviour support and habit coaching. These practitioners work as part of your team to ensure a holistic approach to achieving the outcomes that matter most to you.
The Northern Learning Hub is an exciting new place for adults with disability to learn and grow, delivering a weekly program that includes two days based at Yoorallaâs Broadmeadows Community Hub digital learning space and one day of community access across the Hume region.
The Northern Learning Hub is supported by Hume City Councilâs commitment to ensuring that all residents are given every opportunity to participate and have their voices heard. This is evident in the inclusion of a Disability Action Plan into Council Plan, which will highlight priority areas for practical implementation, with progress and achievements recorded through annual reports and Council Plan Quarterly Reporting.
Coburg
Our team of NDIS support coordinators work with you to reach your goals and plan for the future. They can help you find disability services that are tailored to your needs and budget. They can also assist you with monitoring your NDIS funding and outgoings.
Physio Inq OT provides a range of Occupational Therapy services including assessments, home modifications, and improvements to daily living. Their therapists specialise in working with people with sensory, social, behavioural, and motor issues.
Fawkner Shopping Centre is located on Station Street in the Moreland section of the suburb, while Merrifield Plaza is situated 4km away (Hume). Both offer accessible shops, supermarkets, cafes, and banks with wide aisles and wheelchair-friendly access. Various community services are also available at the City of Moreland Fawkner Customer Service Centre on Station Street.
West Footscray
We've heard from you that the NDIS is not providing enough support to protect you and your rights. Weâve also heard that your housing and living supports arenât being planned, funded or governed as a connected ecosystem and that you can't exercise choice and control over your living arrangements. Too much time is being spent on fighting over who should pay for what, and not enough on making the whole ecosystem work.
Physio Inq OT is here to help you with your NDIS plans through a wide range of supports including assistive technology, home modifications and improved daily living assessments. You can get in touch with us on phone or by webchat, which are available 8am â 8pm Monday to Friday.
Located just 14km north of Melbourne CBD, Fawkner is split into the City of Moreland and City of Hume local government areas. With a range of accessible services and community spaces across both areas, you'll be able to enjoy the vibrant opportunities for engagement right in your neighbourhood.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Ann (Blom) Berry. To so many, she was a skilled caregiver, a caring friend, and a loyal supporter. To us, she was mom, grandma, sister, and Aunt Hon. She peacefully went to the Lord on May 13 at the age of 81.
Her memory and legacy will live on through those who loved her, including her children, Michael (Cindi) Berry, Kristin (Brian) Kertin, and Karen (Sean) Gardner; her grandchildren, Justin Berry, Madison Kertin, Andrew Berry, Katelyn Kertin, Joseph Gardner, and Ryan Gardner; her brother, Wayne (Susan) Blom; her nephews, Jason Blom and Brian (Michelle) Blom; her great nephew and niece, Lincoln Blom and Monroe Blom; and many extended relatives, including cousins, Margaret Iles, David (Katriya) Carlson, Donald (Sherry) Blom, Doug (Jan) Blom, Richard (Martha) Blom, Daniel (Jeanne) Blom, Jerry (Lorraine) Hyatt, Becky (Johnny) Long, Laura (Troy) Fraebel. Katherine (Hans) Crump-Wiesner, Judith (Vincent) Fala, Margaret Ann Rutledge (G. Stuart Ackman), Albert Turner Rutledge (Anne Marie Carry), and Martha Holden Rutledge (Richard Young). She is preceded in death by her father, Grant Blom, and her mother, Marian Blom.
Mary Ann was born on November 25, 1941, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and was raised in Terre Haute, Indiana. She lived many places throughout the United States, but spent her retirement years in Noblesville, Indiana.
Mary Ann built a life that was centered in her faith, dedicated to service, and committed to her loved ones.
She grew up attending Bible Center Church in Terre Haute where she established friendships at a young age that continued into her adult years as they attended nursing school together at West Suburban College of Nursing in Oak Park, Illinois. These friendships remained to be some of the most valued relationships in her life up until her passing.
After graduating from nursing school in 1962 she briefly taught younger students at West Suburban before pursuing her Bachelor of Science from Bob Jones University. At Bob Jones, she met, and later married, Herbert Berry. Together, they had three children. She poured her heart into service as a nurse. Early on, she served as a missionary in South Korea, supporting an orphanage and helping to place babies into loving homes. Her nursing career spanned 40 years, including 15 years with the VA in Marion, Indiana. Even in her retirement, she continued working in the healthcare sector part-time with Sunrise Senior Living in Carmel, Indiana until she died â an experience that, in her words, was the best job she ever had.
A lifelong Christian, she regularly participated in prayer circles, bible studies, peer ministry, and as a member of the alter guild. She was an active member of Spirit of Joy Church in Indianapolis, Indiana and a regular volunteer at The Sharing Place.
She was dedicated to her family â dog sitting (even though she didn't particularly like dogs), attending her grandchildren's sporting events, and traveling many miles to help with her children's various moves and home projects.
In addition to her commitment to the church, volunteerism, work, and family â she loved spending time on her hobbies, particularly decorating her home, sewing for children and grandchildren, and tending to her garden.
When we celebrated Mary Ann's 80th birthday in 2021 or attended her Blom family reunion that was 70 years in the making last year, we certainly thought she had decades left to live. Though Mary Ann's earthly life ended earlier than we expected, we know she lived it to the fullest and is now in the heavenly home God has promised.
A Celebration of Eternal Life for Mary Ann will be held at Spirit of Joy Church (3535 Kessler Blvd E Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46220) on May 18 at 1:00pm with visitation immediately preceding, beginning at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in her memory to one of Mary Ann's causes: The Sharing Place (through Lutheran Child and Family Services), Spirit of Joy Church, or Compassion International.

Professor Lesley Lokko announced as winner of 2020 RIBA Annie Spink Award

Monday 4 January 2021 â The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is pleased to announce Professor Lesley Lokko as the recipient of the 2020 RIBA Annie Spink Award for Excellence in Architectural Education.
Lokko is currently Dean of Architecture at the Spitzer School of Architecture, New York, and from January 2021 will begin building the African Futures Institute, an independent postgraduate school of architecture in Accra, Ghana.
The prestigious biennial prize is awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of architectural education, in a school of architecture anywhere in the world that offers courses validated by the RIBA.
On receiving the award, Professor Lesley Lokko said:
âI am deeply humbled by the juryâs decision. This award is for everyone who came out in support of the Black Lives Matter protests, which put such difficult and challenging questions on the table for us all. It is also dedicated to the teachers and students at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, whose tenacity and inventiveness have charted a new path for architectural education. Together with the profound intellectual generosity I experienced as a student at the Bartlett School of Architecture in the 1990s, they remain crucial touchstones in my teaching practice, now and in whatever comes next.â
RIBA President Professor Alan Jones said:
âCongratulations to Professor Lesley Lokko, the deserving winner of our 2020 Annie Spink Award. Lesleyâs impressive career in architectural education has spanned decades, and she has established herself as an internationally renowned educator. Lesley has demonstrated impactful leadership, passion and an unwavering commitment to architectural education and research, and lectured and published widely on the subjects of race, identity and architecture. I am delighted to present Professor Lesley Lokko with this accolade.â

2020 RIBA Annie Spink Award judgesâ citation:
The members of the judging panel (see below) of the 2020 RIBA Annie Spink Award for Excellence in Architectural Education were unanimous in their decision to select Lesley Lokko as the recipient of this yearâs award.
Trained at the Bartlett School of Architecture and with a PhD in Architecture from the University of London where Lokkoâs knowledge base and capability as an educator was built, her academic career was initially honed at Kingston University, University of East London, London Metropolitan University, University of Greenwich, the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL) and later at the University of Westminster. These experiences were followed by a number of visiting professorships in North-American and African higher education institutions.
Throughout her career thus far, Lokko has established a durable and international legacy in terms of her voice and the courses to which she has contributed, most notably between 2014 and 2019, as the founder and director of the Graduate School of Architecture of the University of Johannesburg, a school which â in its independence and ambition â has been transforming not just the content but the narrative of architectural education in South Africa and the continental region.
She has pioneered for, and cultivated, critical debate about identity in architecture. In so doing, she allows our discipline to be enriched by many new voices, traditions and dreams, enabling students and educators to find their place in architecture, on their own terms, galvanising others in the field to address a more pluralistic, inclusive, and open culture of education.
The innovation and passion in her teaching is matched by an unfaltering commitment to ensuring that architectural education and research run in parallel with the contemporary anthropological, artistic, technological and literary public debates. In tandem with this approach, she questions, defines and enhances the role the architect plays in shaping contemporary global and local communities. This professional stance not only makes her a most deserving winner of this award but also confirms that we are to expect many forms of achievement and of well-deserved recognition in her future career steps.
The 2020 Annie Spink judging panel included:
Nicky Watson (Chair) â Director at JDDK Architects, RIBA Council member, RIBA Board Trustee, Chair of the RIBA Education Committee
Asterios Agkathidis â Architect and Senior Lecturer for Digital Design, Programme Director for the MA in Architecture, and Postgraduate Lead in Architecture at the University of Liverpool
Niall McLaughlin â Architect and Professor of Architectural Practice at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL
Dr Martina Murphy â Director of Studies for the BA and MArch programmes and Associate Head of the Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment at Ulster University
Naomi Rubbra â Winner of the 2019 RIBA Dissertation Medal, currently architecture assistant at Levitt Bernstein while completing her Part III, and co-founder of PeopleMatter, a start-up dedicated to rethinking cities to improve quality of urban life
Alex Wright â Professor and Head of Architecture at the University of Bath
The ÂŁ10,000 Annie Spink Award is financed by the Annie Spink Trust Fund, which was established in 1974 by architect Herbert Spink FRIBA. He bequeathed the trust as a lasting memorial to his wife Annie, who died in 1938, as an honour for the âadvancement of architectural educationâ. Past recipients of the Annie Spink Award include Murray Fraser, Christine Hawley, Florian Beigel, Nigel Coates, Peter Cook and Dalibor Vesely.

Karen Lorene Godshall Hicks passed into eternity on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. She was born May 22, 1949, in Sellersville, Pennsylvania. At the time of her passing, she resided in Justin, TX.
Psalm 37:23 declares that a person's steps are "ordered by the Lord." Certainly, this was true of her well-spent 72 years.
Karen grew up in Telford, PA. In grade and middle school, she won numerous singing and athletic events, as well as competing on the Souderton Swim and Diving Team. As a Souderton High School beauty, she was especially known for her sewing and cooking prowess. She received her high school's Crisco Award for Outstanding Student in Home Economics, the Junior Women's Clothing Contest Winner, and Membership on the prestigious McCall's Magazine National Sorority of the Teen Fashion Board. She graduated with honors in 1967.
She attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, from 1967 to 1971, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education and a minor in science. While there she met Darryl Hicks, a student from Oklahoma (He has often said, "We met in a psychology class. She made an A+, and I made a C, which pretty much explains a lot!) They married in Sellersville, PA, on August 14, 1971.
During the next years, Karen and Darryl taught school (Big Oak Christian Academy near Biscoe, NC; and Temple Christian School in Rockingham, NC). For eight years she was a featured singer with The Servants and The Darryl Hicks Trio, touring extensively across the United States, recording four albums, and featured in churches, auditoriums, music festivals and national television programs. They appeared in concert with numerous major artists. Three songs featuring her solos hit numerous regional and national radio charts, and were featured in The Singing News (Southern Gospel music's equivalent of Billboard Magazine).
When they moved to Charlotte, NC, Karen continued teaching at Heritage Academy near Fort Mill, SC, while Darryl began a new career as author and television writer/producer. She also attended Winthrop University Graduate School in Rock Hill, SC.
Major changes came when the couple started a family with the arrival of daughter Charnee and son David. Eventual career moves to High Point, NC, Galveston, TX and the DFW area of Texas saw the family tree flourish with seven grandchildren. Karen's teaching career continued in Texas until she retired in 2004 to travel with Darryl and to enjoy her children, grandchildren, cats and original jewelry designs.
From 1983-2018 she served as an advisor and contributor on a variety of nutrition and recipe books for noted authors and publishers, and from 2010-2020 she hosted Karen's Kitchen, a popular internet recipe and back-story feature.
She was known in jewelry, fashion and shopping circles as "The Purple Lady" for her stylish fondness for wearing clothing and accessories in that color.
For several years she also enjoyed being a member of two Red Hat Society chapters and was immortalized in the song, "Red Hat Woman," performed at the society's 2009 international convention in Dallas, Texas.
During 2021, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Karen is predeceased by her mother, Mary (Nase) Allebach, her father, Harold Allebach, her maternal grandparents, Herbert and Olivia (Price) Nase, paternal grandparents, Ellis and Mabel (Schurr) Godshall, and parents-in-law Gifford and Mabel (Sledge) Hicks.
Left to carry forward her notable legacy are her husband of 50 years, Darryl Hicks, daughter Charnee (James) Barker, son David Hicks, sister and brother-in-law Sharon (Sheri) and Michael Curry, seven grandchildren -- Daniel Hicks, Richard Bennington, Adam Hooper, Kevin Hooper, Taylor Moreno, Dylan Hicks, and Jacob Hicks, as well as a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
Psalm 116:15 declares, "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints." Certainly this is now true for Karen Lorene Godshall Hicks as the celebration of her home-going continues among the golden mansions and the heavenly throne room, the inheritance of every believer, to which Karen looked forward many times as she read or heard John 14.
And while her family mourns the unthinkable loss of this remarkable, talented and beloved woman, we also celebrate her reunion in heaven with the Lord Jesus whom she served so faithfully, even as we cherish her memory and strive to fulfill the noteworthy heritage she left us to follow!
A Celebration of Karen's Life will be held Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the First Baptist Church Youth-Fellowship Hall, 101 South Highway TX-156, Ponder, TX 76259. Dress is casual., but you are welcome to wear something purple as a tribute to the Karen's favorite color. A lunch buffet will be provided beginning at Noon, with the memorial to take place afterward. A time of dessert, coffee, tea and fellowship will follow the service. To allow the family to prepare for food and seating, please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to attend (and how many will be in your party). The response to your RSVP will include lodging options.

Drone footage takes you above Houston for a look at the damage Tropical Storm Harvey left behind
http://launch.newsinc.com/js/embed.js
HOUSTON â Â Swollen rivers in east Texas arenât expected to crest until later this week, but federal officials are already predicting Tropical Storm Harvey will drive 30,000 people into shelters and spur 450,000 victims to seek some sort of disaster assistance.
And yet, forecasters say, more rain is coming. Lots more.
Several locales have already received 2 feet or more of rain, and forecasters say a reprieve wonât arrive till weekâs end at the earliest. By then, rain totals could reach another 2 feet â with isolated instances of 40 to 50 more inches â along the upper Texas coast.
Follow live updates
âThis is a landmark event for Texas,â said FEMA Administrator Brock Long. âTexas has never seen an event like this.â
But, Long warned, Harvey presents a dynamic situation, and âevery number we put out right now is going to change in 30 minutes.â
Harvey will likely surpass 2008âs Hurricane Ike and 2001âs Tropical Storm Allison, two of the most destructive storms to hit the Gulf coast in recent memory, he said. Around 13 million people from Corpus Christi to New Orleans are under flood watches and warnings as of Monday morning as Harveyâs storm bands repeatedly pummel the same areas.
Early Monday, Harvey was just barely clinging to tropical storm status, but the danger is far from over. The storm is forecast to head back into the Gulf of Mexico and pick up additional moisture before sliding back over Galveston and Houston, cities itâs already hammered.
Here are the latest developments:
â The average annual rainfall in Houston is 50 inches. The city has seen 25 inches of rain in two days. Another 25 could fall by Saturday.
â Several cities, including Alvin, Friendswood, League City, Pasadena, Pearland, Seabrook and Webster, have issued 11 p.m. curfews.
â A mandatory evacuation order was issued for areas along the Brazos River in Fort Bend County.
â Dallas is opening a âmega-shelterâ capable of accommodating 5,000 evacuees at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center by Tuesday morning.
â The Houston Independent School District has canceled school for the week.
â President Donald Trump will travel to Texas on Tuesday, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, are scheduled to tour the coastal bend region Monday.
â Energy provider CenterPoint says 96% of its Houston customers have power, but more than 87,000 are without electricity as the companyâs crews experience difficulty reaching the affected areas.
Houston volunteers
Flooding continued in and around Houston on Sunday as citizens with boats assisted authorities in search and rescue efforts on roads that have turned into rivers.
A CNN crew was with one such volunteer when he used his vessel to rescue an elderly couple, their daughter and two dogs in Dickinson, Texas.
âIt was shocking,â daughter Pam Jones said of the floodwaters. âIt just creeped up.â
At Mondayâs press conference, Long encouraged more citizens to come forward, saying the rescue and recovery efforts would require community involvement. He said the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster website would direct residents to religious and nongovernmental agencies through which residents can help out.
âItâs going to require the citizens getting involved,â Long said. âDonate your money. Figure out how you can get involved as we help Texas find a new normal.â
Houston resident Louise Walker told CNN she was trapped in her neighborâs apartment.
âOur bottom level is waist-deep in water. We have helicopters that are flying over us rescuing people, we have people who are living in these first-floor apartments like I have. They have been breaking into empty second level apartments just to have somewhere to go because we canât get out. Weâre simply completely surrounded with water,â she said, adding that the helicopters were only rescuing people who were in immediate danger.
âMy only plan at this point is to stay out of the water. Iâve been keeping in contact with family and friends, but other than that we canât do anything. We are literally stuck here,â Walker said.
Officials say they have conducted more than 250 water rescues and rescued more than 1,000 people. The US Coast Guardâs Captain Kevin Odditt says 19 Coast Guard helicopters are also involved in relief efforts.
As of Sunday evening, between 800 and 1,200 people had been rescued from their homes in Galveston County, County Judge Mark Henry said.
An additional 1,000 National Guard members are being called in to help flood victims in Houston, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced via Twitter Sunday evening.
Dam releases
The US Army Corps of Engineers began the controlled release of water from the Addicks and Barker dams in west Houston early Monday, according to Harris County Flood Control District Meteorologist Jeff Linder.
This is ahead of schedule because the water levels at the dam began to rise quickly, Linder says. The engineers are expecting spillways and roads in the area to be impacted, according to a release from the agency.
âResidents adjacent to the reservoirs need to be vigilant because the water in the reservoirs is rising rapidly,â said Col. Lars Zetterstrom, Galveston District commander. âBoth reservoirs are rising more than half a foot per hour.â
The City of Conroe says record levels of water are also being released from Lake Conroe Dam and flooding is imminent in some areas.
âThe City of Conroe will be evacuating McDade Estates. Other neighborhoods will be evacuated by the County,â it said.â Public Safety Officials have been overwhelmed by the number of calls and are currently prioritizing calls as they come in.â
Evacuation orders
The rainfall threatens to exacerbate an already dangerous situation, as Harveyâs rains have left many east Texas rivers and bayous swollen to their banks or beyond.
Harrowing tales from Houston
âThe breadth and intensity of this rainfall are beyond anything experienced before,â the NWS said. âCatastrophic flooding is now underway and expected to continue for days.â
In Fort Bend County, a voluntary evacuation order was made mandatory for areas along the Brazos River, with the NWS predicting river levels of 56.1 feet â nearly two feet above the record during flooding last year.
âHarvey continues to batter Fort Bend County,â said County Judge Robert Hebert. âResidents who flooded last year know how serious this situation is.â
Fort Bend had worked with the Red Cross to establish shelters for residents, Herbert said.
Stuck in the Texas floods? Hereâs what to do
911 overwhelmed
The storm killed two people in Texas, authorities said, and the death toll will likely rise. A woman who drove her vehicle into high water in Houston was killed, and fire killed a man in Rockport.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner warned that some 911 calls are going unanswered as operators âgive preference to life-threatening calls.â
The 911 dispatchers in the nationâs fourth-most populous city have received 2,000 requests for rescue, Turner said. Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said his department had responded to 2,500 calls and have about 1,000 more waiting to be serviced.
People are also taking to social media to announce their locations and ask for help.
How social media is helping
Many roads impassable
In a Sunday news conference, Gov. Abbott said, âWe want to stress when there is heavy rainfall and flooding, the importance of staying off the road. If you drive into water, youâre taking your life into your own hands.â
Portions of major highways, including Interstates 10, 45 and 610, were submerged and unnavigable. Houston resident Dion Laurent said the White Oak Bayou flooded I-10 and I-45.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said he understands the compulsion to find safer ground, but urged people to think twice before venturing out into high water and to consider unforeseen dangers, such as manhole covers being lifted from their holes.
In Brazoria County, south of Houston, officials set up an evacuation route for all residents living west of State Highway 288 and south of State Highway 6, ordering them to âLEAVE NOW!â under a mandatory evacuation order. Those in need of shelter can take refuge in the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, officials said.
Louisiana in Harveyâs sights
Meantime, Louisiana Gov John Bel Edwards wrote to President Trump requesting that he declare an Emergency Disaster for the state.
âThe National Weather Service forecasts that remnants of Hurricane Harvey will bring heavy rainfall to Louisiana posing serious danger to life and property of the citizens of our state. Significant lifesaving efforts such as search and rescue, transportation to shelters, logistical support, and shelter operations are particularly needed in Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, and Vermillion parishes,â Edwards wrote. The NWS predicted 10 to 20 inches of rain between Sunday night and Monday, he said, with âmajor river floodingâ anticipated.
Harvey blasted ashore as a Category 4 hurricane on Friday night, making landfall just north of Corpus Christi before quickly being downgraded to a tropical storm.
Keep track of Harvey
âWhat is unique in Harvey is that as the storm moved inland, a large high pressure built in to the north and, basically, the steering currents, which guide Harvey, collapsed,â said CNN senior meterologist Dave Hennen. âThis has caused the extremely slow movement of the storm, moving only around 60 miles, less than 2 miles per hour. This has allowed the bands of storms to move over the same areas

New Mission, Windmill Hill This was opened in August 1884. Rev Canon Mather speaking at the ceremony said many years ago he had unsuccessfully tried to get a church built in the area and was glad to see that there was now a mission rooms. It was beautiful, inexpensive but in want of so many things, not even a harmonium as the one that was there that day had been lent to them. The room was capable of holding 230 people, being 45âČ 6" by 20âČ 6" with a gallery at one end and a movable platform at the other. On top of the building was a gilded weathervane representing a windmill. A design for a church had been approved at that time, but money was required to carry out the building of it.

Adam and Eve, Wine Street (also listed as Wine Street Passage) For sale on 19th January 1860 as in the possession of George Knowland under lease for 14 years from 14th September 1857, rent ÂŁ105. Freehold and free. Listed in Inn and Commercial Tavern section.
Information on landlords: F Probart 1824 Edwin Ward 1836-40 George Knowland 1852 G Knowland 1867 George Frederick Knowland 1878 Elizabeth Knowland 1882. Notes: Richard Trotman described as âlate landlordâ died aged 46 at Coronation Road on March 20th 1840.
Notes: Mr Knowland had a disagreement with T Jones of Jones & Co when the firmâs new store was being erected in Wine Street owing to a part of a cellar used by Mr Knowland being purchased by Mr Jones during the construction. This boiled over on 1st May 1855. Mr Jones had been celebrating a win in Chancery with a group of friends at the house of Mr McMillan, consuming half a dozen bottles of champagne between them which they decided would benefit froma a brandy and water chaser. So they went to the Adam and Eve, whereupon Mr Knowland burst out, grabbed Mr Jones by the collar, pushed him against a wall and swore that he would not enter. After asking him by letter to apologise and send an amount to the Bristol Infirmary, to which there was no reply, Mr Jones brought a case against Mr Knowland that was heard at the Tolzey Court in July. After hearing the evidence the Recorder stated that it would be better settled out of court, which was done.
In 1856 John Baker was charged at Bristol Police Court with stealing three coats from the tavern, the property of Mr Knowland, the landlord. Baker, a recruit, to whom Mr Knowland was said to have shown great kindness, was said to have confessed his guilt and to be very contrite and on the landlord.s intercession the charge was dropped and Baker handed over to his sergeant.
In January 1870 it was reported that for many years Mr Knowland had placed on the smoking tables each Saturday a box in aid of the Royal Infirmary and General Hospital, He had regularly, until recently before his health failed, shaken the box before each customer in the 2 rooms with a friendly request for a penny. The collection for 1861 amounted to 25 guineas, in 1869 was ÂŁ25 4s.
Mr Knowland was also a visitor at St Peterâs Hospital and Robert James âa big powerful manâ who had been an inmate and knew him from this work was taken to court on 1868 for threatening him when he would not offer employment. In 1883 Mrs Knowland reported the collection boxes holding ÂŁ2 12s 8d.
In March 1884 Albert Oâ Brien and Albert Richards were charged with having stolen a pint measure from the pub. It was noticed by a policeman that the measure was marked with âKnowland, Adam and Eveâ on the side. OâBrien said that he had ordered the beer just before closing time and could not finish it all so he had taken the cup away and was going to return it the next week. They were fined 11s without costs.
Notes
George Beard â In October 1892 was charged along with his elder brother George, with stealing dress material and other goods from Messrs Jones in Wine Street. George had been employed by the firm as a porter for 2 years. A shop assistant, Helen Anstey stated that she had cut a length of dress material and put it aside and when she returned it was missing. At 6pm George asked her for paper to wrap a parcel and when she followed him the cloth was found there. He pleaded guilty and when he was accompanied to 2, Orchard Street, the Batch, where he lived other pieces of material were found there. His brother lived in 54, Goodhind Street , where more material was found.

Mrs Oxley â In 1827 she and three of her children perished in a fire in Wine Street.
Philip Scapulis (d. 1590) Originally from Trier, a stationer lived in Wine Street. In 1577 he was involved (with others) in a dispute with the Attorney General regarding whether their houses which had previously belonged to the Merchant Tailorsâ Guild were therefore property of the Crown It was decided by jury that this was not the case. Wife Elizabeth, daughter Margaret, who was born in 1581 and died 4 years later. It is unlikely that he had any other children as they are not mentioned in his will which left bequests to cousins and godsons, neighbours and an ex-apprentice Richard Foorde.

The Don, 45 and 46 Wine Street (Clothing) The Bristol branch of the Don opened in 1883 under Manager W H Forsyth, who presided over a staff of 30. was one of many in towns throughout England. The upper floor housed workrooms, where at the end of the 19th century sewing machines were âdriven by an engine, also acting as the motor for the dynamo forming the generator for the electric light installation.â The height of technology in the high street.
While bespoke tailoring was carried on using these sewing machines, the ready to wear items were made at Stroud. This enabled them to charge the customer only one shilling per ready-made item over the cost price. The handsome premises were destroyed during the Second World War, although the company carried on. Moving to the top of Park Street, particularly noted in the later years as recommended suppliers of school uniforms.
Parnall & Sons, Narrow Wine Street Parnallâs â much more than shop fitters, although this advertisement was specifically aimed at the grocery trade.
H G Parnall founded the business in 1820 and in 1893 it was being described as âimmenseâ, having become a limited company some four years earlier. As well as the main warehouse and showroom in Narrow Wine Street, the company had an iron and brass foundry at Rosemary Street and a steam joinery at Fairfax Street. Scales and weighing machines (including the Patent National Balances invented by Mr Parnall and 20,000 sold between 1883 and 1893) were manufactured at Fishponds. The Patent Agate Hand Scales were described as âspecially worthy of the attention of tea dealersâŠâŠwhen suspended above the counter they will work three times as long as any other scale without getting out of orderâ.
The wide range of items manufactured and supplied also included weighbridges (suitable for railway companies, collieries and public corporations), scoops, sack lifters, barrows and trucks, canisters (in large variety), counter boxes and window show trays, show glasses, butchersâ and other warranted cutlery, marble top tables (for restaurants etc), show stands, treacle cisterns, safes and cash boxes, patent tills, provision tickets, window name plates, tobacco cutters and tobacconistsâ fixtures, chairs, bottling machines hand carts, coffee mills, tea mixers, hoists, lifts and gas engines.

Iron Church In the fashionable suburb of Clifton, amid the large villas, a mission church was built of iron in 1865. Plans were drawn up for a permanent church by the celebrated architect James Piers St Aubyn, his only church in Bristol, and building was slow, 1870-81. His planned steeple, similar in appearance to that built at Christ Church, never rose above the basement stage and serves as a rather enormous NW porch.
Concerns about the stability of the building brought in John Bevan and he rebuilt part of the nave and chancel, completed 1909. It survived in use until 1976 when the parish was joined to St Saviour. The joint parish purchased the redundant Highbury Chapel c1975 which in turn was restored and rededicated to St Saviour & St Mary, Cotham to replace both buildings. The BBC purchased the Tyndallâs Park church for use as a scenery store. The interior was subdivided and a new entrance created in the north aisle. The church was acquired in the mid-1990s by a free-church congregation, and now in use as the Woodlands Christian Centre. Work began in July 2000 to convert the upper floor into supported housing and the ground floor is to be retained for worship.
