OMG SALEM SALEM SALEM, U AND UR WISDOM LITERALLY SAVED ME

idk if you're going to see this because you don't seem as active anymore but i literally revised my entire school life thanks to you!! this is like the first really huge thing i manifested (even though there's no such thing as big lol but you get what | mean)

this success story is gonna be superrrr long but it’s worth it i promise!!

For context im from the UK, and in the last 2 years of school is called a sixth form or called a college (16-18) and you can either transfer schools or stay in the one you were already in for 5 years.

I decided to move (like 80% of the people in my year/grade 💀) i wanted change and to meet new people, but my entire friend group and so many people i love stayed in my old school.

I found out the grass wasn’t greener on the other side and let’s just say i really did not like the change, i felt fomo from my friend group and all of them expressed how deeply they missed me and how much i should’ve stayed and so i started to feel regret.

And if you’ve ever felt regret to a significant amount, you know it’s the worst feeling you can ever feel, it’s like your insides are twisting, it’s like beating yourself up over and over again. And it got really bad. It lead me to a deep depression where i barely focused on my studies, and it showed with recent test scores. But I read your post and so many others and realised: i’m not stuck, and never will be, I can go back if i wanted. And so that’s what I did

No one really speaks about revision, not as much as i’d like as someone who now owes revision her life lol, so i was a bit nervous and super doubtful, but i looked at revision success stories and told my self if someone can revive someone back from the dead, someone can revise a serious diagnosis and another can change their age, you can revise the fact that you ever moved.

I really hung on to your posts that drilled it into our heads that it’s already done and there’s nothing to do. And tellafairy’s posts about how we can change our lives from the comfort of our own beds. Even in my darkest moments i repeated that mantra and it calmed me down.

I wanted to use the void but realised i probably would’ve have put it on a pedestal and most likely would’ve gotten so hung up on it, so decided to use SATs and choose the reality where i never moved schools and school life was so perfect.

I fell asleep on the first few nights, but then one particular night, i felt really fulfilled and floaty so I just kept visualising a day at school with my friends. AND I SWEAR TO WHOEVERS UP THERE I WOKE UP AND I FELT LIKE SOMETHING SHIFTED, LIKE I REGAINED ALL THESE MEMORIES

I LOOKED AT MY PHONE AND MY SCHOOL EMAIL WAS MY OLD ONE WITH ALL OF MY OLD TEACHERS AND I WENT TO SCHOOL IT WAS LIKE I WAS ALWAYS THERE AND NEVER LEFT

it felt weird when i woke up, like i felt a change, but it felt like i was supposed to be here, like i was at peace with what happened.

“Hello, Glamour, I’m y/n y/ln and today we are going to be digging through my phone!” Y/n sang, greeting the camera with a grin!

What’s your screen time?

“Oh my god…” Y/n groaned, running a hand down her face. “4 hours and 35 minutes.”

“That’s not too bad!” The interviewer said with a sympathetic giggle.

“Well that’s good to hear.” Y/n chuckled, swiping through her phone.

What’s the story behind your lock screen?

“Awww, it’s very cute.” Y/n said, her cheeks flushing slightly as a grin spread across her face before she held her phone up to the camera:

“So it’s a picture of me, my wonderful husband, Drew, and our dog Charleston.” Y/n couldn’t help but continue to smile at the photo and the memory of the evening. “This is at a beach in… somewhere in South Carolina, I’m not giving away our secret spot. But yeah, I think it was taken by one of Drew’s sisters and it’s just such a good memory of me and my favorite person… and Drew too.”

Y/n teased as she swiped into her phone for the next question.

Y/n quirked her brows, smiling into the camera as she held up the meme.

“We’re gonna have to dig deep into the archives… the personal collection.” Y/n teased, scrolling through her numerous saved Tik Toks.

“Well, I’m not shy to admit that I am a bit of a fangirl and do have quite a large folder of saved edits.” Y/n giggled, her cheeks flushing as her eyes landed on an especially entertaining edit of Drew. “Now I’m gonna preface that… yes, a lot of these are of Drew or myself or our characters. I can’t lie, I do have a bit of an addiction.”

As she watched it, she bit her lip and let out a flustered giggle. Behind the camera, the interviewers laughed at y/n’s reaction, causing her to scroll onto the next edit:

“Oh my god I forgot about this one!” Y/n squealed. “I was showing this one to Drew and Madelyn last night and we were in actual tears at the comments!”

“I just want to say, shout out to the editors and commentators on Tik Tok for being so unabashedly horny.” Y/n said, pointing to the camera with a cheesy grin.

“I mean… the people already know.” Y/n rolled her eyes playfully as she opened up her Spotify before turning it to the screen:

"I also like to make playlists for each of my characters," y/n explained. "It really helps me to get into the mind of the character and kind of... explore aspects of them that might not be surface level or obvious."

“Ooh yay! I love Pinterest.” Y/n squealed as she opened up Pinterest excitedly. “Pinterest is actually the most underrated app, I use it everyday for work, memes, funsies.”

“Fun fact, a lot of my nails and fashion genuinely come from Pinterest.” Y/n explained. “My stylist and I have a shared board and are constantly sharing new ideas.”

“Is your Pinterest public?” The interviewer asked, to which a mischievous grin spread across y/n’s lips.

“No it is not, I like to be at least a little bit mysterious and I feel like Pinterest is pretty personal.” Y/n nodded.

“Drew. He texted me right before I got here, which we always do right before either of us have an interview.” Y/n grinned, closing her phone.

Astrology placements that are ignored/underrated

12th house stelliums: people with prominent 12th house placements tend to be forgotten about a lot I notice. Many were very outcasted from an early age or were used to others pushing them into the background. they don’t get credit for their amazing creativity & emotional intelligence. They have extremely colorful inner worlds and can live more in their head than in the real world which is a reason why they can be easily overlooked in a group. They tend to have a very high emotional IQ. They have an amazing ability to read the room and can pick up on things that aren’t verbally said. They are quite influential as well and can control what people think to an extent (can be very manipulative because they are so good at emotional cues). They can manipulate you into taking their side.

Taurus moons: although exalted I feel like people really don’t talk about this sign much. They are usually very sexy people and are very comfortable in their natural bodies. Very intelligent and money driven. These people are literal money magnets. Because of their reliable and practical nature many can climb the corporate ladder faster than most. They are very reasonable and factual which is why many tend to be politicians or big bosses. Very conventional personalities. Also the creativity in their fashion is extremely underrated. Virgo placements: I feel like Virgo placements get one of the worst reps of the zodiac. Many describe Virgos as being very naggy, insecure, hypercritical, bland ect. Virgo in astrology rules the untouched, unreachable, purity, devotion, analysis and healing. Virgos also rules over the maiden that is known for traditional beauty in astrology. The 7th house: is honestly crazy misunderstood! It’s not only about relationships which is what I notice people mostly talk about when this house is brought up. The way people treat you is based on this house, the way you perceive yourself and express yourself to the world is the 1st house just to get that straight. The 7th house can be a big fame indicator and usually points to either success or failure in the public eye. Which is why it’s common for people with sun in the 7th or Pluto in the 7th to gain massive fame or have extreme power in the public eye, but it can also indicate the rumors people spread about you and the enemies you attract. You can attract a lot of jealousy from others. Having heavy 7th house placements can be talked about by others a lot for good or for bad. You are usually people’s main topic of conversation, people love to hate you! Especially if you have a Sun, Venus, Uranus, & Pluto in the 7th house.

Mercury aspects: you can see someone’s humor, mannerisms and tone of voice through this planet. If someone talks too much they most likely have Gemini-sag in their Mercury, if someone is academically disciplined yet judgmental it seems to always be cap mercs, if someone’s comedic and a great host with a flirty nature usually a libra merc. 6th house placements: I find most people find talking about 6th house placements to be extremely boring lol which i understand but it actually plays an important role in your chart. The 6th house is associated with issues relating to our sexual, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. I feel like this house is probably the most under talked about and ignored house out of all of the houses. The 6th house is how you deal with day to day life and your motivation to complete tasks. When difficult placements fall in the 6th house, the individuals with those placements must carefully see how they treat themselves. Our ability to tend to matters related to our 6th house can help fuel our self esteem & ensure that we are in alignment with ourselves and values so we won’t be menaces to society lol. This shows how you manage day to day life and how you find beauty in the mundane simple things.

Gemini placements: they are not just chatterboxes, very rational and reasonable individuals who are naturally curious. Sometimes they act cold and detached but that’s because they like to observe from a 3rd party perspective. That way they can easily read people and question their motives & they are very good at it too being rules by mercury. They usually love puzzles and are great networkers. However surprisingly a lot of Gemini placements aren’t talkative and most are pretty chill and understanding. They are incredibly logical and fun & are very open minded. Pisces placements: there’s a lot to uncover with this sign. They are the most sacrificial yet deceitful. Being ruled by Neptune as a mutable sign they have identity crisises often and can take on others personalities & looks. Appreciation Post for Shoola

I want to start this post by gushing about Shoola’s a design, a Black woman adorned in gold and red, from her clothes to her accessories, to show off she is the that she is one of the richest and most powerful in Piltover, a city already teeming with rich aristocrats and politicians. Speaking of accessories, Shoola’s mechanical neck ruffle is absolutely brilliant a great symbol of Piltover’s status as a steampunk state with her golden eye mask in S2 a cool addition that I must admit I much prefer over the ruffles. Oh, and her finger rings are absolutely gorgeous I love the sound they make when she taps her fingers on the table.

Now on to her character. Shoola is a politician and a member of the ruling Piltover council so her hands aren’t exactly clean, in fact she is one of the people Jayce is shaking hands in the montage of him embracing the political game. But Shoola is one of the more moral council members and the one who advocates for diplomacy and peace with Mel.

She voiced concern for the potential loss of income people would face from the shutdown of the shipping lanes, initially protested Heimerdinger’s forced retirement, and pointed out to the rest of the council they have lost touch forgetting that while the people of the Undercity were not their preferred constituents they were still their people.

The last line hits hard because it contrast the other councilors like Bolbok suggesting a hex weapon to use against them or Cassandra stating the Undercity is impossible to control, all of which is within earshot of Viktor, a man who came from the Undercity.

Shoola advocates for the capture of Jinx after she bombed the council but that’s it. She and Mel opposes the plan to fully invade Zaun in retaliation for the mural attack. Shoola was the only Piltovan who listened to Jayce’s speech and choose to stay and work with Mel to protect Piltover from Ambessa and Viktor.

Finally, there is the implication Shoola is the only one who has Sevika’s back in the new ruling council. She and Sevika lit together the funeral papers and Shoola was the only one who didn’t give Sevika a dirty look when she took her seat and turned her eyes instead at the new councilors who did. Shoola’s personality and previous actions lend weight to her implied relationship or solidarity with Sevika.

In conclusion, Shoola might be a supporting character but she is underrated in the fandom. She is empathetic and gorgeous character and is one of the only few characters from Piltover who never wavered from their principles.

This woman is honestly a romantic at best.

If she were to meet you at the Last Drop, she’d probably be drawn to you—your smile, the way you carry yourself, and how your eyes gaze over at her. She would probably try to scoot her way over and suggest to pay for your drink, which of course, you’d agree and you would start to chat a bit—slowly warming up to each other, but even so she’s an Enforcer and you’re a Zaunite—not a good mix, people would think, which leads to meeting in secret here and there sometimes.

But on the other hand, if you were a piltie, then of course she’d be drawn to you by all the things I stated in the previous line. She would probably be out on duty and you would happen to pass her, giving her a smile before she stops you just to tell you how much of a beauty you look. It would be a routine. You running into her and starting a conversation—which soon led to going on small dates.

I feel that she would prefer going to dinner, theatre, or even a small coffee shop as a date for starters, but as you both develop more in the relationship, she’d most likely prefer to treat you to fancy restaurants, spoiling you rotten, and of course, doing things you love.

Grayson would definitely be a very, VERY observant partner—like seriously. If you so even glance at something you wanted in a store, it’s in your hands almost immediately. If you want something, but can’t get it yourself and don’t wanna burden her with getting it for you, she’ll already be getting it for you. If you mention something you like (ex; specific perfumes, books, clothes , etc.), she will make a mental note of it and get it for you.

She’s probably only been in one relationship in her life, but it didn’t workout—leading her to be a bit more guarded with her feelings(??). As much as she would love you dearly, she still feels the need to keep her guard up, but as you both get more comfortable in the relationship—the guarded walls come crumbling down and she’s way more open to you.

Grayson is a busy woman—she’s an Enforcer for God’s sake. She knows her work is stressful and pretty dangerous, making quality time a tight squeeze. You know she’s busy and she tries hard to spend time with you—making sure you’re loved and feel appreciated for—but she makes up for it with the gifts she’ll send to you (ex; flowers, your favorite food, letters, etc). It’s definitely one of her love languages and you love that she spoils you rotten, but you still crave her regardless, as does she.

Speaking of love languages, besides gift giving, she also loves physical touch and acts of service. Whenever you two are out together, she’s always in touch with you—always. Hand around your waist. Holding your hand. Holding you close to her side. Locking fingers together. Her hand on the lower drift of your back. Anything. She will have you close enough to be touching you. When you’re alone together at home—she’s more touchy. She’ll have her hand on your thigh, rubbing along your sides, massaging your legs, and even massage your tits a bit. She loves having you under her touch, it’s really comfortable. If you’re not a fan of physical touch yourself, she’ll back off, of course.

Her acts of service is practically doing whatever you need her to do—most times doing stuff that you don’t even need to tell her to do. She’ll make dinner or help you with it—even if you fight her on it. She knows you can do good on your own, but she just wants to show you how much she really loves and cares for you. She’ll help you slip on your shoes, zip up your dress (if you’re a fan of wearing them), and helping you do your hair. Now, if you have like type 3/4 hair, she’ll be confused on how to care for your hair, but trust me—SHE GONE LEARN. It’ll take a couple tries, but soon enough, she’s your personal hairstylist <3

Being an enforcer is definitely frustrating and tiring—which mostly leads her to coming home upset and tired. You wouldn’t even have to say anything but open your arms and let her engulf your body—melting into her touch as your hands would rub her back, earning soft grunts from her. She’d stay silent for a moment before telling you about her day, which you gladly listen and sometimes put your feedback on it. As much as she tries not to take her frustrations out on you, her dearest, it sometimes happen on accident, but she will immediately apologize after taking a couple deep breaths. She never wants to make you feel bad after she had a bad day, but she definitely tries her hardest and make it up by holding you close to her while saying she loves you and she’s sorry (gifts are bonus points).

Now, if you were to be upset after a bad day, she’d do the same, but with more (idk). She wrapped her a strong arms around you and hold you close to her as you would either stay silent or rant about your day. Her hands would rub your back, occasionally smoothing her hand over your hair to calm you a bit. She’s very understanding and knows how it is to be stressed, which is why when you just snap at her, she isn’t too mad, but only encourages you to take a deep breath before she pulls you closer to her on lap—engaging you with her arms as she held you close to her. Of course you don’t mean to sometimes and you even apologize deeply for it, but you, too, are also working on it.

She fuckin loves watching you try on clothes. She could be sitting at the edge of the bed, eyes wide with such love and affection as you would come out wearing various outfits (outfits that she picked for you for special events). You would strut around with your cute outfits with a wide smile on your face, absolutely loving how obsessed and beautiful her precious girl was :)

Grayson is pretty strong (I will die on that hill.) and she could pick up a bit of weight tbh, so she just randomly likes picking you up—either bridal style or over her shoulder just to mess with you. Now if you’re a bigger girl, that’s even better. She loves seeing the shock and surprise on your face as she lifts you, chuckling at your reaction before hushing your protests with a searing kiss.

When you two have an argument, which isn’t too common, it’s quickly dispersed. If she’s in the wrong, she’ll be quick to apologize for what she said/did—but sometimes she’s stubborn, which would make the argument a bit longer (bonus point if you’re the same also). The argument wouldn’t last too long as she didn’t want to go to sleep with you, knowing you’re upset with her and there’s some tension. Eventually, she’ll be the one to come clean and apologize, which you also will if you’re in fault (if you’re not stubborn), leading the argument to die down—hugging each other tightly, relishing in the warmth of the tight embrace.

She’s snores pretty lowly, but when she’s utterly exhausted, that shit is so damn loud that you sometimes have to throw a pillow over her face to muffle the snores (not trying to suffocate her ofc <3).

As I said before, her work is pretty dangerous and stressful, which means she never wants you caught up in something—which is why she don’t really like to tell you a lot of things that involves her works. She doesn’t mean it in a non-trusting way, she only wants to keep you safe.

Grayson tries to be polite with certain things she say, but she can’t help but say it bluntly—especially when it has something to do with something that’s stupid. There are some things she won’t bother to speak on, but her facial expressions will say everything her mouth prefers not to say.

She has a good patience, but most times you push it. There are times where she literally had to go outside or something to take a deep breath when you asked the most nonsensical question she ever heard of all her years. (Isn’t she like in her late 40s or older??.)

Synastry Notes-II

Disclaimer: These are just my observations. If they don't resonate with you, simply read and move on. Additionally, most of what I’m saying here is based on straight relationship patterns. That’s because, in my experience, certain planets and points (like Mars, Venus, Eros, etc.) tend to act a bit differently depending on whether they show up in charts for women or men. That being said, the astro tea can still apply across all kinds of dynamics—it just might look a little different depending on the people involved. Let's start then!

Juno-Moon conjunctions usually point to marriage. Doesn’t really matter if it’s the guy or the girl who has Juno. Even if the conjunction is up to 8 degrees apart, it still seems to count. Honestly, sometimes just having Juno and the Moon in the same sign is enough. I don’t get why some people insist it has to be under 5 degrees…

I also notice Lilith conjunctions show up a lot in long-term relationships. People have a hard time letting go of that Lilith person. But it needs to go both ways—if both people have Lilith connections with each other, it works. If only one person does, it usually turns into a one-sided obsession.

One more big thing for lasting relationships: positive Saturn aspects in synastry. Especially Venus-Saturn. Those can make things last way longer than you’d expect. But here’s the catch—if the Saturn aspects are only positive, it can start to feel like you’re stuck in the relationship. Like, even if it’s time to move on, it’s hard to let go. That’s why it’s actually better to have a mix of good and bad Saturn aspects. But yeah, more good than bad if you want to stay together and not lose your mind.

Chiron-Mars conjunction sucks—especially if the guy is the Mars person. You know how women usually expect the guy to take action or make moves? Yeah, well, when the woman’s Chiron is conjunct the guy’s Mars, his actions—or lack of action—tend to hurt her a lot. And when the guy gets angry, the woman will get hurt a lot by his actions/lack of actions during the fight. Great times.

Sun-Venus aspects in synastry are super important in relationships. It’s better if the aspect is a positive one. Also, progressed charts count too—but just for a limited time. Once the conjunction vibe fades, so does the magic. And in progressed synastry, keep the orb tight—3 degrees max. Here’s a an example: say your partner’s progressed Venus is conjunct your natal Sun. That means their taste, what they find beautiful, and what they’re drawn to... it all lines up with you. Like, you’re literally their type. In this dynamic, the Sun person (aka you, probably) kinda takes the lead, and Venus is like “yes king, shine your light.”

When Mars and Sun conjunct in synastry, it’s hot—but if the woman is the Mars person? It’s like she sees the guy and thinks, “Yes. Him.” And everyone else is like, “...Really?” lol She’s drawn to his core vibe, his essence.

Asteroids are often underrated when it comes to synastry, but honestly? Eros and Psyche aspects hit different. Especially when Eros is the guy and Psyche is the girl. It’s giving “the body finds its soul” energy. When these two connect in a positive way—like a sextile, trine, or even a conjunction—it creates this deep, almost spiritual bond. Personally, I’ve only experienced the sextile, and even that felt more meaningful than any of my other relationships. I can’t even imagine what the trine or conjunction would feel like. Couples who have these aspects are very lucky.

When Saturn and Moon connect in a positive way, it’s like emotional stability enters the chat. Saturn, the responsible one, steps in and says, “I got you,” and Moon believes it. Saturn brings that “I’m not going anywhere” energy, and the Moon loves that. This is seriously one of those aspects that helps a relationship stay solid when things get messy.

12th house Venus experience is interesting. It’s always like “Does that person like me or not?”. You cannot be sure about their true feelings towards you. Even when they try to show affection, it just creates more confusion. You’ll be sitting there like, “Okay… he brought me coffee… but does that mean he loves me? Or is he just polite? Or is this coffee a metaphor for rejection?” Lol That person can’t show you his love to you in a clear way. Either you just feel that they love you deep down… or you’ll never fully get it on a conscious level.

If you’ve got your South Node sitting in the 7th house and someone’s personal planets conjunct it… buckle up. That person is gonna feel like home, a soft hoodie for your soul. It’s so cozy and familiar. Letting go of them? Not happening. At least not in your mind. You might know it's not perfect or even healthy, but the connection hits that nostalgic part of your brain that makes you think, “They came back for me. Like we planned.”

This little moment right here is when she reunites with Mel. It is the moment that made me fall in love with Ambessa's character and its complexity and depth.

The way Arcane gives so much attention to detail on the expressions of its characters is the show's most underrated strength, and this, by far, is the best example of how a few simple details can go such a long way in developing your characters and story.

Look closely at the way her demeanour changes when she sees her daughter. Her emotions overcome her, and the cold unflinching facade of a warlord transforms into the expression of a loving and caring mother, one who's desperate to do anything and everything to help her family... which only adds to the tragedy of her story and makes her actions all the more gut-wrenching to watch.

She reminds me a lot of Ramses from Prince of Egypt because, just like him, she's capable of all this love, care, and compassion but is too blinded by her own pride, ambitions, and arrogance to see that her actions (however well-intended) are hurting those she cares about.

You root against her because of what she's done and what she represents, and yet, at the same time, a small part of you wishes that she can turn away from this futile and (self) destructive struggle for absolute control and power.

God I love her character.

One of the most underrated aspects of Jaime and Brienne’s story is how easily they become a team.

Early in their joint story, they stumble in and out of dangerous situations. While Cleos struggles to assess and understand and navigate each threat, Jaime and Brienne are in lockstep, already ten paces ahead in handling the problem. And with scant need to discuss anything between them.

They seamlessly allow each other to take the lead when the situation warrants, despite spending the rest of the time at each other’s throats.

Jaime notices how determined Brienne is when Robin Ryger is on their tale. When she dives off their boat without breathing a word of her plan, Jaime just gets it, responds, and tries to support the effort.

Similarly, at the inn, Brienne lets Jaime take the verbal lead. He’s better at talking, and she knows it.

All the while, Cleos just emphatically does not get it and is not synced with either of them, even though he’s an actual member of Jaime’s family. This obviously culminates when Cleos dies while Jaime and Brienne mount a counterattack and survive, with Brienne following Jaime’s commands.

Poor Cleos does a lot of work in his scarce three chapters with these two. He shows us how Jaime actually thinks about, and treats, someone he doesn’t respect. But Cleos’s most under appreciated work is showing how immediately Jaime and Brienne fall into unwanted communion.

More than just strategy, though, this immediate sync of theirs drives much of their emotional story.

Jaime experiences true understanding and, for lack of a better word, a bond with another person for the first time, which immediately challenges his perceptions of his relationship with Cersei.

And Brienne, whose default mode is mistrust, finds herself believing in Jaime’s sincerity to the point she considers throwing herself in his arms for comfort. Even in brief moments of uncertainty, she acknowledges she knows him too well to doubt him. It’s obvious she walks out of White Sword Tower determined to stop looking for the monster inside him that she knows doesn’t exist.

With this premise of their battle-ready dynamic, the future GRRM intended for them feels almost tangible. He meant to unleash them together.

But, this isn't even Gobblick's only form! In fact, the first time I saw and fell in love with Gobblick was in its SECONDARY form! Warning, however, that this form is built off of integral spoilers for the game, so if you click below, do so wisely...!

WOW! If you loved Gobblick already, then I hope Glohm Gobblick was worth the wait–it certainly was, for me!

Wine-red is just a perfect yet underrated color, especially for pitcher plants! I couldn't believe I had never thought about making a reddish pitcher plant prior, myself, but that just goes to show how ingrained plant color stereotypes are! I saw a picture of a pitcher eating a rat once, and it never escaped my mind, and THAT was red!

But Glohm Gobblick isn't just this beautiful shade of red for no reason! It's under the effect of being Glohmed, which makes anyone other than Mario & Luigi more powerful while amplifying their desire to be isolated and lonely! And unlike some other characters, there's nobody around that's worried for our poor friend Gobblick...it exists only as an optional boss you can come across on your own. Don't worry, Gobblick, we love you...!

Gobblick is never truly alone, however. Thankfully, the game specifies that this is not the Gobblick, but a Gobblick! It's one of MANY! Please expect Gobblick to make its way alongside Toads and Piantas as one of the main recurring Mario People, being charming background fodder for decades to come.

Let's talk about "Monster" ... and one of Odysseus' criminally underrated traits: his lack of judgment.

I was re-listening to "Monster" the other day and it kind of just hit me... Overall, that song isn't my favorite (it's somewhere in B tier; the lyricism is great, and the part after "So if we must sail through dangerous oceans..." absolutely slaps, it's just not one that I go back to frequently.) But there are some things I genuinely adore about it because I adore the way it progresses Odysseus' character arc as clearly not a "corruption" and how this is conveyed through the way the song is set up and presented.

First of all, I simply have to yap about how Odysseus isn't justifying his foes' actions the way that I have seen some people falsely assume. He's describing what they did or do and essentially saying, "They aren't letting themselves be stopped by guilt from doing what they think they have to do, so why should I?"

Polyphemus doesn't overthink whether it's right or wrong to kill some people because they harmed him or his sheep.

Circe may deep down feel guilt but isn't letting that stop her from turning men into pigs to prevent any more harm from befalling her nymphs at their hands.

Poseidon isn't losing sleep over drowning a fleet because that is what gods do to retain their infamy and status.

Odysseus and the rest of his soldiers didn't use the Trojan horse tactic out of malice or bloodlust, but out of pragmatism. It was the most efficient way to win a war that would have only cost more lives on both sides if they hadn't ended it then and there.

You look at that and you may think, "That's all very fair, but that doesn't mean any of those actions are justified" ... and you'd be right. None of the actions above are actually right or justified.

But the thing about "Monster" that I love so much is that it's specifically NOT something like, "These people I've encountered are all evil and ruthless and they are right and justified in being that way; I'll be the same." It's actually, "These people I've encountered act with ruthlessness; it clearly aids them in achieving their goal, and they seem to have figured out how to not feel guilt over their actions. I want to reap those benefits too. So far, I've been acting with mercy, which seems to have disadvantaged me. If they can do it, I can and should do the same to level the playing field."

Odysseus isn't saying that their actions are right, wrong, or justified. He's simply exploring why these people act the way they do. And he does so entirely without judgment.

I'm not surprised about him not judging Circe; while she was still wrong since she went overboard and struck preemptively against people who were not guaranteed to ever cause harm, she was pretty much redeemed in the end and her point is the easiest out of these to understand.

But the rest? Polyphemus killed his best friend. Poseidon drowned his whole fleet. The Trojan horse? It never comes up anywhere else but since he mentions it here, I think it's safe to assume that Odysseus feels guilty for using a tactic such as this. And still... Odysseus talks about his foes' actions with understanding and an open mind. He acknowledges their points of view—all of them, even if none besides Circe ever acknowledged or understood his.

The only time we genuinely see Odysseus act out of resentment is when he tells Polyphemus his name... After that, he never shows anything of the sort ever again. If he ever held any resentment toward any of his foes, I feel like this is where he lets it go for good.

Hell, even Poseidon, whom he would have by far the most reasons to resent, Odysseus doesn't actually judge or resent. I wrote a whole mini-essay on why the Vengeance saga proves that Odysseus doesn't actually seek or want vengeance on Poseidon. One might argue that he sounded like he was avenging his crew in "Six Hundred Strike" but it's important to remember that he offered Poseidon forgiveness one song earlier. He didn't lead with vengeance or resentment, but he rekindled his anger when Poseidon rejected his mercy.

My point is that Odysseus doesn't judge or resent any of the people who attempt to stand between him and his home... which shows incredible character strength in and of itself. This occurs later, but he acts similarly toward Calypso in "Not Sorry for Loving You" as well.

This is such an underrated trait of his, especially considering it fits perfectly with EPIC's themes, which revolve around seeing every perspective and balancing between ruthlessness and mercy. Honestly, I don't think those themes would even work with a protagonist who isn't so open-minded.

Coming back to "Monster," as we've established, Odysseus doesn't pass judgment on his foes. Similarly, he isn't saying that his decision to embrace ruthlessness and "become" a Monster (read more to find out why I put that in quotation marks) or any of his future actions as this Monster are justified.

I genuinely despise it when people call his arc a "villain arc" or "corruption" because that's pretty much missing the entire point. He isn't actually becoming a monster, corrupting, or genuinely changing his personality—hence why I put those quotation marks earlier. He is deliberately choosing to embrace a certain ruthless way of acting, fully knowing that it is not actually right or justified. "So what if I'm the Monster?" is self-gaslighting. He knows it's not "so what?" But he's doing it anyway because he has seen this way of acting aiding his foes. He literally says, "I must become the Monster / And then we'll make it home." He is convinced that this is what he must become because he keeps being told this by everyone.

From the top, his values or person isn't actually being corrupted. He's not really internally changing. He's merely adapting a way of behaving because he thinks it's the only way he'll still get home, and only because of that. It's really f*cking sad actually. Especially because he is wrong; his not being ruthless is not actually the problem, as we find out later.

Genuinely, his monster act lasted exactly 3,5 songs; in the second half of "Mutiny" it's already all gone because he is so afraid for his crew and what they're about to do to themselves that he instinctively goes back to wanting to save them despite how they just led a mutiny, despite how they don't listen to him regarding the cows.

Odysseus' entire arc can be described as, "He tries out mercy, and it doesn't get him home. He tries out ruthlessness, and it doesn't get him home either. In order to get home, he needs to learn balance, in Hermes' words "Every trick in his domain"." And that is also, as I believe, the main theme of EPIC: Neither ruthlessness nor mercy by itself is the solution. Both have their place; one needs balance. Or: treat people as they ask to be treated.

Only by the time of the Vengeance saga does Odysseus seem to have finally figured this out, and that's where he genuinely starts succeeding.

So no, Odysseus is no longer "The Monster" by the time of the Vengeance saga, no matter how much the visuals in "Six Hundred Strike" try to convince us otherwise. But he isn't "Just a Man" either. Did anyone besides me notice how he stopped calling himself this or justifying his weak moments like that in "Monster" and how he doesn't go back to it even after dropping the monster act?

And here we have the perfect segway into an essay I haven't written yet that might answer the question, "If now he's not a man and not a monster, what is he then?"

Well, technically Odysseus told us himself that one time he acted out of resentment... "Neither man nor mythical." But that's an essay yet to be written... I'll get to it soon, and there we might answer what actually happened in "Six Hundred Strike" and why the line "If you dance with fate I know you'll enhance your state", that I see is mostly overlooked, matters so much more than we probably all think.

Until then, know that I am not actually the first one to address the "Neither man nor mythical" significance. Credit goes to @glisten-inthedark; coming across her post on this matter genuinely enhanced my understanding of what happened so much and I need all of you to read it because it's a truly brilliant conclusion. I'll write my own essay on this topic soon, I promise. But without that post, I would've probably not come to this realization for a long while.

Either way, we end this essay with words that I will never tire of repeating: Stop villainizing Odysseus, y'all. It's not cool, not only because it's undeserved but also because it pretty much shows that you have successfully missed the point and core theme of this musical.
