I'm Zephan, I'm an intern at ARAS, and I'm very interested in symbols, dreams, consciousness, and art that portrays those things. I feel like dreams can act as a sort of portal into the unconscious, showing us our true unfiltered emotions and what we would call the soul. Henry Fuseli's The Nightmare is one particular work that caught my attention for the way it represents dreams. The expressions of the figures and the lighting depicted show a specific feeling and add to the atmosphere which isn't exactly "scary" as much as simply surreal. Sketch for "Oath on the Rütli," Female Figure (verso), Henry Fuseli, 1779, Art Institute of Chicago: European Painting and Sculpture
Although Henry Fuseli spent most of his career in England, he was born Johann Heinrich Füssli in Zurich, a city that fostered early Romantic ideas. His first important commission was for the large painting The Oath on the Rütli in the city hall of Zurich. This sketch is a preliminary study for that work. It depicts the oath sworn on the Rütli meadow in 1291 by representatives of three Swiss cantons (territories) against the ambitions of their Habsburg overlords. Fuseli’s dynamic, elongated figures, which were strongly influenced by Mannerist art, are less an accurate representation of the historical past than they are an expression of the universal desire for freedom. Anonymous gift Size: stretcher: 29 15/16 × 26 9/16 in. (76 × 67.5 cm); irregular edges of the original canvas: 28 5/8 × 22 3/4 in. (72.7 × 57.8 cm); edges of the Oath on the Rütli image: 25 5/8 × 21 3/8 in. (65.1 × 54.3 cm) Medium: Oil on canvas

Thor Battering the Midgard Serpent – Henry Fuseli Thor Battering the Midgard Serpent is a 1790 painting by the Swiss artist Henry Fuseli. It depicts one of the most popular myths in Germanic mythology, Thor’s fishing trip, which was known to Fuseli through P. H. Mallet’s 1755 book Introduction à l’histoire du Dannemarc, translated to English by Thomas Percy in 1770 as Northern Antiquities. The nude and muscular Thor stands in Hymir’s boat with the Jörmungandr on his fish hook. The painting was Fuseli’s diploma work for his election to the British Royal Academy of Arts in 1790. The subject has been interpreted in relation to Fuseli’s support for the French Revolution, where the serpent could represent the Ancien Régime. 9th September 1737, birth of Italian doctor, physicist and philosopher Luigi Galvani. Galvani discovered that he could animate the muscles of a dead frog’s legs by applying static electricity to them. Following this he was able to show a connection between electricity and life; he named the discovery ‘animal electricity’. His discovery led to the scientific discoveries of galvanism and bioelectricity. He is recognized as the pioneer of bioelectromagnetics. Galvani’s nephew and defender Giovanni Aldini, later progressed from repeating the experiment to attempting the reanimation of hanged criminals. The reports of Galvani’s experiments were read by Mary Shelley, and influenced her in the writing of Frankenstein. 10th September 1797, death from septicemia of English writer, philosopher, and early pioneer of women’s rights, Mary Wollstonecraft, best known for her 1792 work ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Woman’. After two ill fated love affairs with the artist Henry Fuseli, and the American adventurer Gilbert Imlay, Wollstonecraft met and married the political philosopher and novelist William Godwin, author of ‘Political Justice’, and ‘The Adventures of Caleb Williams’. After only six months of marriage, Mary Wollstonecraft died eleven days days after giving birth to their daughter Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, who later married Percy Bysshe Shelley, becoming Mary Shelley. Scandalized during her lifetime, for her writing and unorthodox lifestyle, Wolstonecraft was marginalized for the majority of the 19th century. Her works and ideas were revived however, during the re-emergence of the feminist movement at the beginning of the 20th century, (Continued in the comments). #galvanism #luigigalvani #electricity #18thcentury #18thcenturystyle #18thcenturyhistory #bioelectricity #maryshelley #maryshelleysfrankenstein #maryshelleyfrankenstein #frankenstein #marywolstonecraft #avindicationoftherightsofwoman #feminismhistory #henryfuseli #percyshelley #feministmovement #tarotcards #tarotcardsdaily #tarotprint #tarotprints #tarotillustration #historicalillustration #gothictales #aceofwands #suitofwands #queenofpentacles #suitofpentacles #wands #pentacles https://www.instagram.com/p/CTpbKxvlFSC/?utm_medium=tumblr
