The many shows of Sid & Marty Krofft (part 3 of 3: The one you probably know...)
(Thanks to Steven Brandt)
youtube
(Thanks to landofthelost2009)
Confession time: I never saw any of the Jurassic Park films until long after they left the theaters. Why? Because I was scarred by Land of the Lost! I mean, my young self was terrified that those dinosaurs were gonna eat those poor people! (It didn’t help that classmates who were watching the show chased me all over the playground making Sleestak noises)
It wasn’t until high school and beyond that I actually took a hard look at the show, and I realized that while yes the adventure was a bit intense for a kid, it wasn’t that bad (but the emotional scarring was still there when Jurassic Park came out)
Then the Will Farrell movie came out and I wanted to see it...until I realized they turned my childhood into a Will Farrell movie (and Rotten Tomatoes agreed, rating it at 26%)
But enough ranting...
If you go by the length of time it was on the air, Land of the Lost is easily the Kroffts’ most successful show (The Krofft Supershow and Wonderbug are the only others to get a second season) It’s yet another Gilligan’s Island style show (Children’s programming producers love making those, don’t they?) that follows the adventures of Rick Marshall and his children Will and Holly (which really makes the romantic subplot of the Farrell film all the more creepier) as they are drawn through a hole between realities from our world to a land inhabited by Ewoks, lizard men and the 70′s vision of dinosaurs (this was filmed before scientists realized the dino’s likely didn’t drag their tails behind them)
(Thanks to Alien Species Wiki)
The “Ewoks” are a race of furry pygmies names the Pakuni, and the producers cast child actors to play them. One, a blonde-furred (most Pakuni had brown or black fur) named Cha-ka, became a semi-regular and eventually became a full cast member in season 3
(Thanks to Tenor)
The lizard men were known as the Sleestak. Though not inherently evil, they see humans as a threat to their existence and are therefore hostile to them. The Marshalls later encounter Enik, a member of an advanced species of Sleestak. He believed he was researching his ancestors, but later realized that he was, in fact, their ancestor and the species devolved into what we know them as.
And then there are the stars of the show, the dinosaurs! Many recurring dinos are given names by the Marshalls...
Grumpy is the name given to the Tyrannosaurus that nearly ate them in the opening credits. Holly suspects the reason Grumpy hangs out near their cave is due to a nearby plant that has a mild narcotic effect on dinosaurs.
Spike is the name given to the Triceratops
Dopey is the baby Brontosaurus that the Marshalls have somewhat domesticated and use as an occasional mount or pack animal
Finally, Big Alice is the Allosaurus that lives near the ruins the Sleestaks call home.
Though the effects aren’t even close to good by today’s standards (and, to be honest, not that great even in the 70s) they were a far cry better than the rest of the Krofft lineup (and the stop-motion animation of the dinosaurs was pretty good for children’s programming).
There was a lot of “lost technology” in the show as well, including mysterious pylons with control panels with crystals as controls that create strange effects.
After two seasons, Spencer Milligan (who played Rick Marshall) decided to leave the show (the rumor is he was upset about not getting any residuals from his likeness on Land of the Lost merchandising). Maybe he should’ve hired Yogurt as his agent...
youtube
(Thanks to Ewout ter Hoeven)
However, the show was still successful, so...
youtube
(Thanks to GameBoyFreak14)
Rick Marshall had somehow triggered a dimensional rift while experimenting in a pylon. This had three effects...
1. Rick was pulled through the rift. Optimistically, it sent him back to Earth, but his ultimate fate is never actually revealed.
2. A similar rift opens near the spot the Marshalls originally fell through. Coincidentally, Rick’s brother Jack was searching for the family (or more likely, given it had been 2 years, their bodies) and was similarly pulled through.
3. The rifts caused a localized earthquake that collapsed the cave the Marshalls called home and scattered the Pakuni. Will, Holly, Cha-ka, and Uncle Jack found refuge in a nearby temple.
This season also saw some more fantastic dinosaurs, including a two-headed creature and one that could breathe fire!
The series was revived in by Nickelodeon in 1991, but I never saw it so can’t comment. For completeness sake, here’s that intro...
youtube
(Thanks to SlayerMatt69)
I will say I find it interesting that they traded in the raft for an SUV (and it survived the fall). Also, the theme suffers from what happens in a lot of 90s themes: the music is so over-produced and the lyrics are so rushed you can’t understand a damn thing they’re saying.
In any event, I imagine it’s still far better than the movie...
If anyone has any requests for episodes, let me know!

Heron’s Galdrar: Dawn Awakens
(link to the companion post on Life Returns)
Or: I got tired of SerenesForest having technically accurate (in that they took the Japanese and turned it backwards) but mostly unhelpful lyrics for the credits themes for the Tellius games, so I took matters into my own hands.
Through repeated listening, careful notation, and comparison to what SF says is the lyrics, I’ve cobbled together something that should at least help you sing the songs accurately. There aren’t any clearly defined ‘words’ in the notated lyrics, so I cut the lines up based more or less on where the voices start and stop.
((Continued under the cut))
Unlike Life Returns, Dawn Awakens is best visualized by how I had to rearrange the official lyrics to even start making sense of what they’re saying, shown here:
At the end, it comes out looking something like this (what they said vs. what I heard):
eru fairaki hodohiu yabam eru fairaki odhi yabam
ira woahirum enik agan ira woairum kenik agan
e muye muyuneta himik ayagak e myui e minto himik yaga
e kuye kuyuzawoya mita dibat e kyuni e kinzoya mika tivat
usemi siti inetonoku kosukay usemi su san inetonok koska
atuonirotuk akat ukoot eokesakibih atuonirotuk akat u eksakibiros
ogat (x2) oros ogat
And here’s the adjusted lyrics by themselves (and the song):
eru fairaki odhi yabam ira woairum kenik agan
e myui e minto himik yaga e kyuni e kinzoya mika tivat
usemi su san inetonok koska atuonirotuk akat u eksakibiros ogat (x2) oros ogat
Feel free to use these wherever you like!

Our Bali Trip :)
I’ve seen and heard a lot of good things about Bali, Indonesia -- from blogs, photographs, friends who’ve been there, and different travel websites. Honestly, I wanted to go right away (if only I can go there thru the laptop screen hahaha). I’ve been thinking about it ever since. I wonder if the places and beaches are same with the photographs. I wanted to experience the life in Bali even for a few days. I wanted to feel the ocean breeze and the warm sea water on my feet. I wanted to explore places I’ve never been.
It becomes a reality when my boyfriend asked me if I wanted to visit Bali as he heard it from his colleague. So I told him that I absolutely want to visit it. He then asked me when I wanted to go and where I wanted to stay (Usually I set the dates and accommodations). After few days, we have our flight details and accommodations.
Since Bali is a huge island, it’s a waste if you’ll just stay in one place, and so we decided to have 3 days in Ubud, 3 days in Seminyak and 2 days in Uluwatu. There are lots of affordable hotels and villas to choose from. You just need to have patience and lots of time looking for the accommodation that suits your style or liking.
In terms of tour, we wanted to be more flexible so we’ve decided that we’ll just hire a private car so we can plan for the places we wanted to visit and no need to rush as you set your own schedule as well (if you wanted to leave the hotel by 7AM, you can do so as long as your activities will be finished within 10 hours).
Day 1 - Arrival at Ngurah Rai Airport and travel time to Ubud. We checked in first at the Adiwana Arya Residence before visiting Ubud centre for restaurants and tourist spots by scooter.
Honestly, Mike and I didn’t know how to drive a scooter (but we know how to ride a bicycle). We thought that they’re just the same thing but when we were actually on our way to the town and the traffic jam is everywhere, we started to panic (then at our mistakes). HAHAHA
Once you see Starbucks Coffee, you’ll find Pura Taman Saraswati. The place is too glorious but unfortunately hidden behind restaurants and coffee shops along the road.
Ubud Palace is the official residence on the royal family of Ubud, but you’ll not see them roaming around because apparently, the King has a lot properties all over Ubud and they’re mostly hotels. Maybe we’re a bit too late that’s why there’s a lot of tourists taking photos and vehicles surrounding the area. (mind you, it’s located in the corner of the main road).
Day 2 - Rented a Private car to drive us too Bedugul area for a whole day
First stop, Wanagiri Hidden Hills. If you’ll rent a private car, this place is outside the area that they cover, so there will be an additional IDR250,000. I just don’t know for the case of package tours.
Few minutes drive away, you’ll see this famous Handara Gate. Though this is along the main road, you have to pay for a fee of IDR60,000/person. Since we got there early, we were able to take our time and enjoy the place.
Next on our itinerary is Pura Ulun Danu Beratan. It is the major Shaivite tempe in Bali. A lot of tourists and locals visit the temple to witness the magnificent temple. Though you have to pay for entrance fee, it’s all worth it.
Taman Ayun was not in our itinerary but our driver Putu (our driver) brought us here with no additional charge (well except for the entrance fee of IDR 10,000)
Day 3 - We left Adiwana Arya Villa early so we still have time to see what Seminyak and Uluwatu has to offer. First stop, Nusa Dua.
Because Nusa Dua is a famous place to visit in Bali, our driver offered to show us around the area (unexpected roadtrip YAY!). It is the location of world-class 5-star hotels and a good location (almost for everything) near the city.
Before leaving Adiwana Arya Villa, Enik (hotel’s receptionist) mentioned that we should go visit Malisti Beach. Though it’s like 40C, we enjoyed the view from the cliff. When we got there, lot of couples are having their prenups along the beach (mostly Asians). Not sure how they survived the heat, but like what people say, “Tiis ganda lang”.
Few minutes away is the location of the Hollywood movie, “Eat, Pray, Love”, the Padang-Padang Beach. Before you can reach the shore, you have to take few plights between huge stones. The beach is not that wide but I think you’ll love the scenery the way that I do. You just have to be careful as some of the stones are really sharp and you might hurt your feet.
If you want to see the sunset in Bali and you’re around Uluwatu area, you have to visit the Uluwatu Temple. It is known for its magnificent sunset and location as it sits on top of a cliff. If you’re wearing shorts like me, you could borrow a malong from them (whether you’re a guy or girl), or better yet, bring your own. :)
Day 4 - Nusa Penida Island Tour care of our friend Putu
Most of the tour package in Nusa Penida includes 2-way transport from your hotel (depending on your location, they may charge more), a 2-way fast-boat ride from Sanur port, lunch and tour guide. The tours could include snorkeling and land tours, or land tours alone, depending on what you wanted. But for us, we chose the one with snorkeling so we could have a glimpse of Bali’s underwater wonders. :) The price usually range from 70USD to 120 USD, depending on the travel agency and inclusion.
I believe each boat has their own snorkeling equipment that you can borrow, as well as life jackets. In our boat, I think I’m the only one who doesn’t know how to swim. HAHA good thing they have a life vest. Don’t be embarrassed to wear swimsuits! They don’t care. (That’s why I love staying overseas!)
A little advise: Eat breakfast before taking a dip! Remember this isn’t a pool so expect strong waves HAHAHA Even if you wear life jackets, you’ll still be exhausted, what more if you don’t. HAHAHA
Before you can reach the Broken Beach and Angel Billabong, you have to pass thru bumpy roads and cliffs. When you get there, you need to walk at least 5-10minutes to reach Broken Beach. Well, it’s worth it. You could really see the beauty of the beach from the top. Every side is totally instagrammable. :)
Few walks away is the Angel Billabong. It’s on the opposite side of the Broken Beach. If you want to take a dip in the natural pool, there’s a stairway to get you there. We decided not to go down and just enjoy the view from above. :)
Klingking Beach is another 30-40minutes drive away from Broken Beach and Angel Billabong. Like the ones you see in the photos, it’s more magnificent in person. You’ll get to see the perfect white side of the beach from the cliff, and the crystal blue sea. If you want to experience dipping or sunbathing along the Klingking beach, a staircase will also help you to get there, BUT, the travel time (back and forth) is 1hr by feet. Soo near yet so far HAHA
Day 5 and 6 - It’s our last day in Legian, Seminyak so we decided to take it easy and just enjoy the beach. As there are souvenir shops near the hotel, we get to somehow buy pasalubong (specially for my sister) HAHA
Around 3pm, we arrived in our last hotel, Swiss-Belresort Pecatu. We never really expected that the location is a little secluded, so we weren’t able to check out what’s in Uluwatu Town HAHA. Since that’s the case, we just enjoyed the hotel amenities and took a lot of photos. :D YAY for that!
NOTE: If you want to do things on your own time, it’s better if you’ll do your research about the areas you wish to visit. Yes, research! I know you wanted to relax so do the research while it’s still few weeks away from the intended travel dates. And when in Bali, don’t be afraid to be lost and ask directions. It’s normal. Try renting a portable wifi before leaving so in cases you’ll get lost, you could just use the Google Map.
Though I got really bad sunburn, I loved the experience and the hospitality that the locals have given us. Than you Bali! We love you! <3
P.S. If you love to dress up, it’s perfectly fine. I just chose comfort over fashion :)

Breaking News: Flood renders 2,000 homeless in Edo
New Post has been published on https://www.thisdaynews.net/2018/09/06/breaking-news-flood-renders-2000-homeless-in-edo/
Breaking News: Flood renders 2,000 homeless in Edo
Over 2,000 persons have been rendered homeless by flood in six communities in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The affected communities include Okpekpe, Ebelle, Ukhomedokhai, Amugbe and Ekpeli.
Besides, no fewer than 20,000 hectares of farmland and 20 houses have been reportedly submerged by flood occasioned by rain which lasted for several hours between Wednesday and Thursday last week.
Access to the affected communities has been made difficult as roads leading to the communities have also been washed off.
Meanwhile, some of the flood victims have appealed for assistance from relevant government agencies.
Speaking to journalists during an assessment of the incident by the Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council, Mr. Aremiyau Aligamhe, one of the victims, Tony Enike, a farmer, said his 10 hectares of yam and cassava farm was affected by the flood.
“I’m confused and do not know what to do as I speak with you. I just want help to come to us as fast as possible, because we are suffering,” he said. On his part, David Omozufo, who lost his building to the flood, said: “Only few days ago, I was a landlord, but now homeless. I really do not know where to start from.”
Also, the Chairman, Mr Aligamhe appealed for immediate assistan ce to the affected communities and the people and noted that with the level of destruction caused by the flood, there was little or nothing the council could do to ameliorate the suffering of the persons affected.
“I share in your pains at this particular time of natural disaster. The council has made representations to the State government to see how respite could come to the affected people and communities,” he said.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor in the area, Mr Sixtus Omokhagbor, assured the victims that all would be done to take care of them.
Meanwhile, the Edo State government has urged people living in riverine communities that are prone to flooding to move upland and take refuge in safe havens that have been created in local government areas in the state.
In a statement issued in Benin City, the Special Adviser to the Governor, on Special Duties, Yakubu Gowon, noted that, “the alarm became necessary following days of persistent rainfall, coupled with the opening of dams by neighbouring countries.”
He recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMeT) had warned of high floods in some identified states across the country, including Edo, that the River Niger was fast over-flowing its bank and urged people living in riverine communities to move upland.
