This is an appreciation post for all the grumpy pics of Gale that I see cross my dash.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE seeing him happy and smiling (wearing his ‘resting sweetheart face,’ as someone brilliantly put it) but whenever I see photos of him brooding or pondering a serious topic or being displeased about something, I can’t help but think about the whiplash a person would get once they actually met him.

Imagine your first impression of Gale when he’s in his battle robes, wizard staff on his back, looking breathtakingly handsome and wearing a stern expression on his face (literally looking like the photo above, from user eekeric) and all you can think is, “Oh my god, I can already tell this guy is going to be an arrogant, blunt, unfriendly asshole. He probably only speaks to people he considers ‘worthy’ of his greatness.”

And then the minute you introduce yourself he hits you with his thousand-watt smile and he’s all “HELLO :) :) :) I’m GALE of WATERDEEP! *shakes your hand vigorously, bows* I can’t help but notice you’re wearing an amulet of Animal Speaking! *chuckles* My oldest and best friend is my own Tressym companion, Tara. Our conversation topics range from roasted pigeon recipes to advice on expanding my social circle to suggestions for my love life. *raises a finger* Have you met any animals that offered you sage advice in regards to your love life or other topics? Perhaps a dolphin with recommendations for a particularly ‘FIN-tastic’ date? *laughs at his own terrible pun* May I fetch you a glass of wine? I’d love to converse further on—”

TLDR: HOW ARE THERE PEOPLE WHO CAN RESIST THIS MAN I SIMPLY CANNOT FATHOM IT

Ohhh, I'm rereading Mystra's entry in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide... and this detail:

This means Gale was punished for trying to restore and preserve what he thought was a lost piece of Mystra's magic. Gale being Mystra's ex-lover put aside. He as her follower, she his goddess, was punished for attempting to do the one foundational rule of her faith.

I'm seething and so sad at the same time.

Edit: I used the word punish loosely, as in, toxic/abusive people will take any small mistake or action and twist it into something they can take advantage of. This post was also largely from the stand point of a toxic deity rather than a toxic partner, but both takes are valid here. Especially with the, “you didn’t stay compliant so now I’m giving you the silent treatment” part of it—from a god and a partner perspective.

God Gale is endgame for Mayhew, and Mayhew couldn't be more pleased 😌

their mutual wizard disease brought them to some pretty low lows, but hey, ignore the tragedy, they're gods now! first order of business is a little worshiping at the altar 😏

i'm headcanoning that gale proposes to tav so fast because he wants the reassurance of stability and also because calling them his boyfriend/girlfriend/etc would somehow be Mortifying for him

I was thinking about Gale's conversation with Mystra, and something hit me: the camera angles. They're telling us a lot.

Mystra doesn't appear to Gale the way Shar does to Shadowheart - as a towering edifice, storm and shadow. She looks almost like a human. Someone you could have a conversation with, without an obvious gulf of power between her and the mortal she's speaking to.

But. The camera angles.

Even though Mystra is presenting herself to Gale in this very human image, almost like an equal - the game constantly shows her with the camera tilted up toward her. The kind of shot that films use when they're pointed up at a character to show their power and control and authority. And then we cut back to Gale - and while I don't remember as well what the camera does here, I know we're either looking straight at him or down at him. There's this uneasy shift back and forth as we swap between these shots, with Mystra almost looming, looking down on Gale, while he's in the position of vulnerability.

It's so clever. You look at how Mystra presents herself, and you can understand how Gale could have thought his relationship with her wasn't all that different from being loved by a person. How she could have seemed relatable, and like she understood what it was to be mortal. You can see how Mystra could make sure he didn't see the imbalance in power.

But the game makes sure we see that imblanace, just as Gale is starting to. Mystra might try to appear almost human, but the camera knows who has the power in this situation, and who is left vulnerable and unsteady in her shadow.
