hello friend!! i have a couple of things to say today! <3

firstly, i never knew you were trans!! that's so exciting, as i'm also a trans person! (i ID as nonbinary!) glad to see my fellow trans people in spaces and fandoms for things i love!!

and secondly, i was wondering what your thoughts were on Lupinranger vs. Patranger. i remember this series being announced when i last followed ur account on my now-dead blog and i was really curious to see how they managed it and if it was a good series or not

Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger vs. Keisatsu Sentai Patranger was a really, really fun series.

They did a really good job balancing things between the two teams and building relationships between them out of costume. The fact that the Patrangers were known to the Lupinrangers out of costume but not the other way around made for an interesting dynamic and some tension I just adored.

This lead to a LOT of shipping and the show did NOTHING to stop it. I personally shipped Lupin Yellow and Patren Sangou

And the show itself made it pretty clear that there was something going on between LupinRed and PatrenIchigo.

However, the focus on the two teams did have one small side effect, the villains came across as afterthoughts at best at times. It's not that they were bad villains, they were just rather unmemorable. This wasn't really a problem in my opinion because the story of the two teams was so engaging that the villains didn't NEED to be all that in focus. This series also has some of my favorite humorous episodes including one of my new favorite Christmas episodes ever! This is maybe my second favorite modern Sentai series after Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (but that show is SO hard to beat). As for me, I've only been publicly out as Trans since September 2021 and I could not be happier! I'm a Trans Femme (She/Her) and just celebrated my second anniversary of being on HRT. Hello beautiful people! Today I am doing a tag called #OcculTea. I plan on creating a video on my YouTube so if you'd rather watch me discuss this in a podcast form. I hope you enjoy this "mini-essay". YouTube Linked Here

Introduction : Introduce yourself. How long have you been participating in the witchcraft online space? What practices and topics do you discuss primarily?

My name is Ares, my social media is PrettyQueerWitch, I've been practicing for about 7 years now, however my practice changed recently to folk magic (I am most interested in German folk magic and Braucherei but I'm also researching English and Scandinavian folk magic). I've been a part of the witchcraft online community for about 4 years as a consumer but in September 2023 I started my tumblr and started to do book reviews and occasional grimoire pages. Topic 1 : Impact on Community

~What is my personal reasoning/inspiration behind sharing my practice online? What am I looking to achieve by participating? Do I seek to educate, learn, or connect?

I want to do book reviews that I can make as honest as possible. Along with wanting to build a community that supports, respects one another, and understands the differences in people's practices/opinions. I seek to learn and connect with my audience rather than just educate my audience. I don't share the personal parts of my practice online but I am willing to share my thoughts as well as small parts of my practice and knowledge I have accumulated over the years.

~How do I believe that social media, as a whole, has impacted the community?

I believe that social media has both positively and negatively impacted the witchcraft and occult community. I believe that while it has brought people into the community and connected people there are also rifts in the community between groups. I believe social media also censors the community and some practices.

~How do I think social platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube have each impacted education/sharing information?

I am not really on Instagram for witchcraft/occult content but I am on TikTok and YouTube, as well as Tumblr. For TikTok we see the issue of dopamine seeking in the form of short-form content, here's a video on short-form video content, attention spans, and dopamine seeking. There is quite a bit of misinformation on TikTok, as there is on any social media platform, and I believe it is the most rampant there. I don't believe you can thoroughly educate people on TikTok and with so much content going around sometimes you never know what to believe. On YouTube, I see less misinformation but that may be because I'm very selective about who I watch but I am sure there is still misinformation on there. I believe that TikTok and Instagram are great for posting pictures and short videos but not educational videos.

~Is consuming witchcraft content becoming a substitute for practice?

I believe there is a group of people who consume witchcraft content, read books, and put their all into researching but never apply it whether that's out of fear or imposter syndrome. There is another group, that I don't see as often, who consume witchcraft content and say they practice but their practice is just consuming the witchcraft content. I believe some people consider it a substitute but in my opinion, practicing witchcraft is something done with intent and energy. A video I love is this video by Ivy The Occultist which gives advice on how to go from just consuming content and understanding things theoretically to practicing witchcraft and magick.

Topic 2 : Influencer Authority

~Out of what I share on social media, how much of it is staged vs. reality?

For me, I don't share my practice online. If I do it will be very small bits. Maybe I'll share my regular altar space, but I wouldn't share my ancestor altar. Maybe I'll show the informational parts of my grimoire but I wouldn't share my birth chart or personal workings I do. When I do book reviews I try to be as honest as possible. I want to start posting videos on YouTube and those will be videos like "Research with me" or "Fill out my grimoire with me". I want to be as authentic as possible while not diving into the really personal parts of my practices.

~Do I think there is an element of censorship in online spaces? How do I decipher what is "appropriate" to share online vs. what to keep privately? Is this based on "social media etiquette" or a personal preference.

Once again I don't share much of my practice online but I have seen creators who have to censor what they post because they're working with animal parts, animal bones, nude figures, blood, etc. I have seen these creators express that they may want to show these parts of their practices but are unable to due to censorship and community guidelines. Some people do in fact keep it private due to personal preference, however.

~Have I ever encountered or heard of grifters in our community? Do I recognize them? What are significant signs of grifters in the community? I have definitely seen and heard of grifters in the community. (Grifter - someone who swindles people out of money through fraud). I have seen people who consistently switch what they sell or what content they make depending on what revenue it brings in, I've seen books that aren't totally well made but are popular because they were made popular through social media. I have seen people sell $60 candles and $100+ herb bundles (I don't totally understand buying small amounts of 50 different herbs, I don't think you can totally connect to the herb that way and I also think it's a waste of money). I think significant signs of grifters are those who don't seem to be well-educated on what they're selling, and those who constantly switch what they're selling depending on what is popular.

~What tools are helpful to decipher misinformation, and how can we as a community prevent widespread misinformation?

I believe that you typically have all the resources at your fingers to decipher misinformation. If you are new to a topic and you learn something new, it is best to research it and cross-reference it. Never rely on just one singular resource. I would say that some ways to prevent widespread misinformation are being honest, not being afraid to constructively criticize, and trying not to glamourize it.

~How does a large following impact the perception of the creator? Does this immediately make them an "expert"? Or are there other assumptions as to why they may have a large following?

A large following often leads people to believe that the creator know what they're talking about. It's believed that because they have a big following and make educational witchcraft content, the creator's always right and I don't believe a big following makes someone an expert. I think research, time, energy, practice, etc. makes someone knowledgeable about a topic. Something I see often is people asking creators to basically create their practice for them but no creator is an expert on how someone's practice should be. Ella Harrison mentions that if you have a good camera, good lighting, a nice background, and upload consistently you are more than likely going to gain a following.

~How does one maintain the balance of authenticity and content creation?

I believe that for all content creators, it is difficult to maintain authenticity and content creation in a balance. I'm personally not sure how one would be able to maintain that balance. I think in the witchcraft and occult community, not glamourizing your practice helps with maintaining authenticity while still creating content. I will talk more about the glamourizing towards the end.

Topic 3 : Imposter Syndrome and FOMO

~When I follow other creators in the community space, does it make me feel genuinely inspired and empowered or does it create feelings of FOMO and being less than?

I am very particular about who I follow but the ones that I do follow, interact with, and put my money into, I find myself feeling inspired in my practice by them. I don't often feel FOMO (fear of missing out) from the creators that I follow and interact with regularly.

~If I experience FOMO, has it ever left me feeling vulnerable to be taken advantage of financially, or otherwise? An example would be - the "need" to purchase the latest popular product or book to "fit in"?

I don't experience FOMO a lot but when I do it definitely has made me feel like I absolutely "need" something. However, as of late, I have been feeling more connected to just using what I have.

~When practicing my craft, do I find myself comparing what I do to what I've been seeing people do online?

When indulging in content relating to similar practices that I'm looking into and implementing into my practice, it's very easy to compare. In the next question, I'll talk about how I personally avoid this comparison and imposter syndrome.

~In what ways do I combat imposter syndrome?

I personally have begun to try to stop caring and to acknowledge that my practice, my circumstances, etc. are going to be different than others. However, I also deal with imposter syndrome in the thought that "I don't know enough". Sometimes I feel like because I don't have everything written down or I don't know every little thing I don't know enough to be on social media talking about witchcraft and the occult. Recently I've been trying to get out of that mindset and just let myself learn and write down my knowledge and acknowledge I haven't been doing this as long as others so of course I don't know as much.

~What would my practice look like without the social media influence of other creators?

As someone who has spent most of my time in the online witchcraft community being a consumer, I don't know if my practice would've evolved and progressed the way it did without the influence of other creators. I think I would definitely still be struggling to find my path and practice without the influence of social media.

Topic 4 : Capitalizing Off Community

~Do I consider online communities as equally valid to in-person communities?

I absolutely do. Not everyone has access to an in-person community and I believe that both are valid. It's great if you have one and not the other or if you have both! I find that both sides of it have their benefits and as someone who is a part of multiple communities, I find that online communities can be beautiful and uplifting.

~How have online occult/witchcraft communities impacted me as a person and practitioner?

I believe that online occult/witchcraft communities have given me so many resources for being a better practitioner and have inspired me and my practice. I have met so many wonderful people that I am incredibly grateful for.

~What are some of the dangers of the current phenomenon of capitalizing off the witchcraft community? Have I been personally affected by this, or have I witnessed someone else be affected?

I personally believe the biggest danger is scammers, people who aren't qualified to be doing divination readings, reading birth charts, etc. Scammers are a big thing in any community and what we see a lot of in the witchcraft/occult community is people pretending to be popular content creators and offering tarot readings for money. I also think influencers making their audience think they may need to buy certain things is also a problem in any community.

~Should there be paywalled communities and online courses?

I think if a creator puts time, effort, energy, and knowledge into creating a community and online courses they should get paid for that. That's why Patreon is such a big platform. Creators put time and effort into these communities and courses.

~How does one ensure the authenticity of courses/workshops/memberships/etc. as a financial investment?

Once again research and cross-referencing are big and important things. Look into who you want to financially invest before you do so and make sure that it's worth what you're getting out of it.

Conclusions :

~What are some topics of conversation I'd like to see more of in our community?

I believe more conversations in general about witchcraft and social media, the glamourization of witchcraft, critical thinking, constructive criticism, and more conversations like this tag would be great.

~What are my community needs?

I feel in terms of community needs, a community where everyone is heard, respected, and seen is the kind of community that we need. I also liked The Norse Witches' answer that giving more of a platform to those outside the US, Canada, and Britain is important especially as folk magic becomes more and more prevalent in the community.

~Where would I like to be held and supported? ~Where do I feel like I'm not truly being seen by my community?

I personally don't really have any complaints as I am happy with my community right now!

~How can we help each other in removing the external peer pressure and grow in the community?

Not glamourizing witchcraft/the occult would probably be a good start. Not making it seem like it's so special and so aesthetic and more beautiful. Witchcraft is not all glitz and glam and it doesn't need to be, not everyone needs to have a super aesthetic and 'special' practice because in the end everyone's practice is valid, special to themselves, and beautiful and there shouldn't be this idea that you need certain things or need to do things certain ways to be valid.

~How can we, as a community, come together more with constructive criticism without it seeming shady/passive aggressive? ~How can we, as a community, do better when we do receive criticism/feedback?

As a community, I think listening to each other critically thinking over our responses and looking at their response as a whole is best to not make everything seem like it's shady, passive-aggressive, or an attack on someone. I feel like people often get talked over or talk over each other and go in circles because they don't listen to one another critically or genuinely.

~Who are some community members that I look up to that are reliable resources and aspirations?

Ella Harrison, Ivy The Occultist, The Norse Witch, De Spökenkyker, Chaotic Witch Aunt, The Witch of Wonderlust, Hex Marie, and Hearth Witch. That's just to name a few

~Further thoughts? I think I covered most of what I wanted to talk about!

Hello and welcome, one and all! Here we are again, sixth months after crowning Miraland’s Biggest Manwhore (who turned out to have been the envoy of sexiness all along! No wonder he had such a good run!). But September is not about the Manwhores, no. September is for the Girls. The Girlbosses, that is! That’s right, we’re jumping straight into another fantastic polling event, Girlbosstember! I’m your host, Megaera, and I will be bringing you daily commentary and updates on our contestants’ progress as our event goes on.

First up today, let’s look at the news from the Love League. Starting us off we have two of Nikki’s dear friends and faithful companions having it out over who’s more of a girlboss. Kimi, who begins Love Nikki as the heiress of the Apple Apparel Group who falls in with Nikki, then later goes on to be the first female General of the Dawn Front war, and finally goes through a grueling election to become the President of the Apple Federation. Girlboss moves? Perhaps! Facing her we have Lunar—yes, that Lunar. A talented and promising young woman hailing from the Cloud Empire. Her many skills include musical mastery, bird keeping, and being a kick ass designer, alongside the ability to wield dual swords that contain the soul of an ancient princess. It was with those skills that she proudly stood at the walls of Cloud City and honored her oath as its chief designer to defend it against the onslaught of League Tyr. Yes, she ultimately died, but she sure looked badass facing off with Nidhogg in the rain. Which of these accomplished young women deserve the title of girlboss more? It’s up to you, voters! Kimi currently commands an early lead over Lunar but the day is still young.

Moving on to the Shining League, this morning we begin with what is perhaps an unusual pairing: Hestia Vs Jax. Hestia is the former Queen of Pigeon Kingdom, and currently works as a researcher in the Ruin Kingdom creating Ai. She also has two different colored eyes which is pretty cool character design no matter what the Mary Sue-Truthers might say. Jax might have a less lofty position in society, but is no less badass as she fronts her own rock group. She is also a devoted ‘roommate’ to her dear dear Yuka and will do anything to keep Yuka safe. Who’s a bigger girlboss? We will find out! Hestia leads the poll following the early morning voting but the margin is not as large as the heterochromatic Pigeon noble might prefer. Anything could happen in this Girlbosstember!

One final note before I sign off for now, our tiebreaker poll has now closed and we can officially welcome Ashley into the final spot in the Shining League! She will be facing off against fierce competition as she matches against Aphrodia in a few short days. Much more excitement to come throughout the playoffs and beyond! Hello, this is the follow-up to the Dracula Analog Horror vs ARG poll. I promised that I would explain the possible pros and cons of both formats, so here we go:

NOTE: I won't explicitly give any spoilers, but proceed with caution just in case.

PART 1: A Dracula-inspired ARG

PROS:

It would have a similar structure to the book: So we know the book compiles journal entries, audio recordings and letters, right? Well, in this modern adaptation, the characters could have YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr accounts or whatever fits best with their personalities. For reference, Marble Hornets uploaded their content in three different accounts: their main YouTube channel, the totheark channel and their Twitter page. Besides videos, there could also be photos and chat messages. Jonathan could record the first entries on his phone, for instance.

It would be similar to Dracula Daily: the cast would post the content on the exact dates, so there would be suspense when viewers don't get any new entries.

It would be more immersive: the cast would be like "This is totally happening in real time, guys".

CONS

People who dislike unreality for mental health reasons may find this format problematic: I think this would be more of a problem if A) the viewer knew nothing about the novel and watched the series completely blind, B) the creator changed all the characters' names, or C) the special effects were convincing. If anyone struggles with this, feel free to give your thoughts on the matter.

How would Jonathan upload the first entries on YouTube?: Since Dracula doesn't want Jonathan to have contact with the outside world, it wouldn't make sense for him to have WiFi in his castle. Would he even know what the Internet is? Speaking of the Internet, I think Dracula should have zero knowledge about it or else there would be more plotholes, especially in the final chapters.

Why would Seward upload things showing tragic moments?: I can't go into detail because of spoilers, but it would be disrespectful to the person involved if he did that (If I were in that situation, I would be angry if someone started recording me as I'm suffering). One could argue that, instead of uploading a video, he could tweet something like: "Unfortunately, this happened today". But then, how does the creator show the weird thing that happens prior to that tragic scene? Remember that showing is better than telling, especially in horror.

On a technical aspect, it would be a mess: While some people might enjoy the challenge of finding the entries themselves, how is the audience supposed to know when the ARG starts? The point of an ARG is to convince people that it's real, so the creator can't say on their page: "Hey guys, the ARG starts next week. Content warning: blah, blah, blah...". Also, what if the audience never finds one of the character's entries.

PART 2: A Dracula-inspired Analog Horror series

PROS:

It would make sense for Seward's entries: it would be unprofessional for him to start a podcast to talk badly about one of his patients. So a better idea would be to show his entries as footage from a security camera in Renfield's room. The video description would be something like: "This is leaked footage from the psychiatric hospital".

It would make sense for the entries related to Lucy: Maybe I or someone else can develop this point further on September/October.

All the character entries can be found in one Youtube channel: Instead of going to several social media pages or websites to find all the entries, the viewer could simply go to one site to follow the whole story. The entries could be uploaded in the same order as the book.

It would solve the plothole mentioned in the previous section: Without going into spoilers, the epistolary format of the novel becomes more relevant in the plot. An in-universe explanation for the existence of the channel would be that [MAIN CHARACTER] created the account to show the videos Jonathan recorded during his trip and also share what happened to the rest of the cast. In other words, the series would technically start in media res.

CONS:

The creator would have to come up with new powers for Dracula (this applies to the ARG version as well): If the creator just gives Dracula the powers he has in the book, the audience would go "Oh, it's just a normal vampire. It's not that scary". I think the creator could look up vampire myths/folklore and focus on the powers that pop culture doesn't mention. That would add more mystery and creepiness.

The first entries would not be uploaded on the exact dates: the footage can say 03/05/202X (I'm not American, so it's day/month/year) in the corner of the screen, but it's not the same.

I would offer to give up the recipe but it is dear to my mom. But to make it all it takes is taco meet, Alfredo slices, peppers, onions and different types of spices my mom got for me. What’s up guys? Today I instead of cooking my own food I went to Wings and Deli and got me some hot wings. I choose that flavor because I wanted to try something different. I usually eat lemon pepper wings which are my favorite. I really did not like the hot wings and realized I’m not a very big fan of any hot food. Hey I’m back again with a new meal I cooked today. Today I decided to spice things up today. I decided to make shrimp with rice. I seasoned my shrimp then cooked it and then added my vegetable and cooked those as well. While I was cooking that my rice was boiling. I added heavy whipping cream to the shrimp, mushrooms, vegetable, and added a little more seasoning. I let that sit for a while and then put it on my plate. It was very good and something new I have not cooked before. I always see my mom cooking it so I decided to give it a chance it turned out really well and it’s now one of my favorite foods.

Hey hope everyone is doing well! I decided to cook something sweet today. I’m an athlete so I try not to eat sweet stuff as much as I can but I was really craving it today. I decided to make s’more cookies and they were so good. I used gram crackers, Hersey chocolate, huge marshmallows, and chocolate chip cookie dough. I made it like I was making a regular s’more but instead of putting the gram cracker on top I used cookie dough on top. I put it in the oven at 400 degrees and let it cook until it looked done. I took them out the over and they were humongous. I could not eat more than two because they were so sweet. You should definitely try them on your free time!

Friday September 1

Hey y’all !! Today I did not do as much as I usually do I went back home and went out to eat with my family at hibachi grill. I got my usual which is steak and shrimp with vegetables. This is my favorite restaurant because they are cooking it all in front of you so you get to interact with cook and also get to see how they do it. The chef is always the most entertaining part of the whole experience. They are funny and they also interact with you so it’s a very amusing time and it’s fun I got to spend it with my family. I highly recommend this restaurant because they will always make enough for later so you can save some. #habichigrill #thebest

Hey y’all back here again with a new meal. Today I cooked dip because of the South Carolina vs North Carolina game today at 7:30pm. Who are y’all going for? I am a big Carolina Gamecock fan! Anyways back to the food I made skillet dip today. I started off cooking ground beef in a skillet and then draining to grease out once it was cooked. Then I added it back into the skillet and put taco seasoning, Rotel, and Velveeta cheese in it and mixed it all together and cook. It was very good especially while watching the game.

Hello, today I went out to eat at a place I never been before. I had the courage to try something I never tried before and it was crab legs. I went to Shake Shake with a friend and he made me try a crab leg boil. I really liked it just not the part where I had to work hard just to eat my food but other than that it was very delicious. I would try it again but I would not make it a everyday thing to eat. Maybe a once a month type of food. But one thing I learned is don’t be afraid to try new things. Even though I didn’t really enjoy the food I’m proud of myself and trying something new. #newfoods #crablegs

Hello blog! Today is a big day! College football is back and in full swing. There are a full slate of games and there has been one amazing game today so far. That game was Colorado vs TCU. With Colorado being 20 point underdogs and Deion Sanders a.k.a Coach Prime making his Power 5 coaching debut, people didn’t know what to expect. Colorado ended up pulling off the upset winning 45-42 with unbelievable performances from WR/CB Travis Hunter and QB Shedeur Sanders. The biggest game of today will take place at 7:30 with the South Carolina Gamecocks taking on the UNC Tar Heels. I am a diehard gamecock fan and I can’t wait for this game to kickoff and hopefully take home the win!

I am not particularly well-versed with the War of the Roses BUT with regards to Richard III, there is one fundamental aspect of him that I wish was better understood in terms of context. One, any claim that Richard III was viewed during his life as chivalrous, dutiful, idealistic etc need to be interpreted as per the world he lived in - a medieval world where war, conquest and bloody victories were seen as romantic and the ideal form of kingship. Notions which were slowly ending, but which still evoked nostalgia by many - which Richard III seemed to have shared. His views/actions towards France, Scotland, and Brittany during his own brief kingship, speak volumes. He was not viewed as a romantic the way we might consider one today, but more like a proud, self-controlled, ambitious person with an overt piety who was eager to prove his merit in war and with a more aggressive foreign policy towards historic enemies, the way chivalry was viewed then. I think this view explains quite a bit about his actions before and after his reign, and also provides an obvious explanation for the supposed "contrast" between the admirable way people spoke about him VS his own deeply flawed morality. And on the same vein, it seems something almost opposite happens with his brother Edward IV, who is repeatedly referred to as a "warrior king", although I will admit this does make sense considering the fact that he won his crown through battle not once but twice. But regardless, this was the man who valued "comfort and joy", who married for love/lust, whose affability was viewed as charming but also rather strange/unique (the letter from the ambassador commenting on how he won funds by sweet-talking locals attests to that), whose wilder and looser lifestyle was viewed with exasperation by his contemporaries, and who seemed far more inclined towards peace than war, something Charles the Bold and Richard III both seemed frustrated by. Edward IV seems more like a courtly king, and frankly, this personality is something I wish was explored more, particularly since there's a very obvious sign of increasing disillusionment (and subsequent ruthlessness) as his years on the crown went by.

Hello! Anon, are you referring to the last anon's use of the word 'romantic'? Because I don't think they were referring to the way Richard was seen in his own time but were instead talking about a frankly bizarre modern insistence that he was some grand champion of social justice ('social justice' is precisely the term I've seen used). But yeah, I agree it's important to place him in his context. A. J. Pollard made a nice analysis of his personality vis-à-vis the expectations of his time: fortitude (chivalry), magnanimity, prudence and justice in his biography of this king.

In many ways Richard III lived up to contemporary ideals of virtue. Outwardly he was chivalrous, generous, just and pious. As Mancini observed, or was informed, in 1483: ‘The good reputation of his private life and public activities powerfully attracted the esteem of strangers’.

He was also very quick at advertising his own virtues whilst calling out other people's vices: ‘our principal intent and fervent desire,’ he informed his bishops in 1484, ‘is to see virtue and cleanness of living to be advanced, increased and multiplied and vices and all other things repugnant to virtue, provoking the high indignation and fearful displeasure of God, to be repressed and annulled’. Edward IV's reputation suffered from his brother’s smearing campaign, but it's true that other contemporaries also commented on Edward IV's comfort-seeking attitude. The cleverest propagandists build their accounts on scraps of truth, after all.

It's equally true that despite Richard III's efforts to project the image of a strict and righteous ruler, contemporaries also remarked on his pleasure-seeking lifestyle. In September 1483, Thomas Langton commented in the postscript of a letter that so far had been congratulatory, that ‘sensual pleasure holds sway to an increasing extent’ during Richard's northern progress. The Croyland continuator noted that in 1484, ‘the fact ought not to be concealed that during the feast of the Nativity, far too much attention was given to dancing and gaiety’. 

The same man that was so martial he said ‘I wish that my kingdom lay upon the confines of Turkey; with my own people alone and without the help of other princes I should like to drive away not only the Turks, but all my foes’ accepted a bribe for peace after King Louis XI ‘gave him some very fine presents, including plate and well-equipped horses’ (Commynes). As Pollard commented, Richard too had his price.

In a word, people are complex. What I mean to say is that perhaps Richard III and Edward IV weren’t so different as we believe (or even as Richard III would have liked his contemporaries to believe). Indeed, we know of almost as many illegitimate children sired by Edward IV (3) as by Richard III (2). In the same vein, I appreciate that you’re pointing out that Edward was more complex than his warrior king myth or his hedonist reputation usually allow him.

His change of attitude after Clarence’s execution was noted even by his admirers (such as the continuator of the Croyland Chronicle). At the same time that people are complex, their personalities also change over time. It’s safe to speculate that he had tired of the war by the time he recovered his crown. The same Edward IV that accepted peace with France in 1475 was not the same Edward IV that was seeking war with France in the mid-1460s. In the end, I also wish he got the more nuanced treatment his character demands.

Summary: Kim Taehyung and yourself, live your lives on the opposite side of each other. Yet that doesn’t mean that you can’t meet in the middle.

Masterlist

Getting out of your car, the cool morning breeze caressed what it could of your exposed skin. The walk from the parking lot to the courthouse wasn’t long, but the chills that ran through your body made it feel like it took a little over the usual 5 minutes.

The sun shined like every morning, yet today it felt different somehow.

Maybe it was wishful thinking, but it felt as if today would be the beginning of something new or different, and that was a lot to say for someone like you.

“Morning judge y/n!”

“Morning”

Your job placed you in a position where you were always in the eyes of criminals and felons that were either angry, moody, violent, sad or careless  ­—and any other word you can come up with, when thinking about wrongdoers who are finally facing the law­­— forcing you to try seeking for positivity in other aspects of your life.

 Since you were a child, you always had an itch that annoyed you every time you had to be in the presence of an unfair or unethical situation and couldn’t do anything about it.

 It is positive to say that you got it from your mother's strong moral views on righteousness, honesty, and integrity.

 And so a dream came up to you, a dream you had expressed to your parents at the tender age of 5 while watching cartoons one cold morning, your parents discussing the latest incident on that morning's newspaper on the other side of the room.

 "I want to put all those kwiminals in jail"

 There was something fulfilling about being able to help people get justice for the wrongs that were done to them, something about making the corrupt, nefarious, and unlawful pay. Your dream never wavered, the sole thought of what the future would hold made you buzz with excitement during your teenage years and still did now in your adulthood.

 It was present during your entire life, you weren't afraid of speaking up when a witness was needed in an unfair situation in school, whether you were putting yourself in a position against a classmate or a teacher, all that mattered was that the problem was solved in a fair manner.

 Yet, even though you kept steadfast loyalty towards your beliefs, it sometimes got you in trouble, as not everyone sees good in someone openly voicing their wrongdoings. Leading you to sometimes being labeled as a snitch —and no one wants to befriend a snitch—.

 Nevertheless, you pushed through, finally meeting people that shared your views in college.

 It was nice to be able to have a conversation with people with the same mentality and strong feelings towards justice as yourself —not saying that you didn't encounter people who were walking this path just for the money.

 And finally, after graduating from law school with two of your closest friends by your side, you decided it had been way too long of a peaceful ride for the evildoers and it was time to get with it.

 "Good morning Y/n!" A voice spoke loudly from behind you.

 "Morning Guk! How was your weekend?" It was always nice to see Jungkook 1st thing in the morning. For some reason, his cute bunny teeth always gave you life.

 Jungkook was one of your friends from college AKA best friend #1. He had the face of a baby with the wisdom of a 70-year-old man –who would have thought.

 His words towards you were always of encouragement or offerings of helping you with anything you needed –just like in college.

 He was methodical with his work, always studying his cases with a careful eye and with discipline. Some hated it, stating he took way too long to make final judgments, however, there wasn't a ruling that Jungkook had ever issued where the victim had been left to suffer the mischief without the guilty paying the price.

 "Pretty calm actually, taking into consideration that I had the Kang case on Sunday" The younger of your friends exhaled "That man has got to get a grip on his life, this is his 3rd showing" He made a pause as if bringing up some memories from the case, however, he quickly returned to the present "How was yours?"

 "It was quiet; abnormally so, thus my wild guess is that this week I'm going to be assigned as many cases as possible."

 "I know that feeling. The impending doom crawling towards you in the shape of Jimin dropping them on your desk."

 “Yep…” You sighed bracing yourself for the upcoming day.

 Briefly talking about other uninteresting subjects and your mundane lives –like, when was Seokjin going to invite both of you out for lunch— you both eventually parted ways to your own chambers.

 "Good morning Judge Y/n"

"Morning Jimin, you look refreshed!"

 Jimin —your perky judicial secretary— was the earthly version of an angel mixed with a dutiful fairy, you sometimes wondered how he even managed to hold up that 1,000-watt smile all day while dealing with you.

 You had been working together for 3 years now and every year they decided to rotate the secretaries, you prayed they wouldn't change him for someone else.

 "I am! Thanks for the days off, they really helped!"

"Don't mention it bubs. What do you have for me today?" You asked as your heels clicked on the tile making your way behind your large rectangular Victorian style oak desk, Jimin quickly trailing behind you with a stack of folders in his arms.

 "These four are for today and these four are for tomorrow" he said as he divided them into two groups in front of you. "I'll have the ones for Wednesday and Thursday ready by tomorrow" he concluded with a small nod and a smile of accomplishment on his plump lips.

 "Thanks, Jimin. What would I do without you?" you smiled up at the younger man, who smiled wider and turned to leave to his own desk a couple of feet away from yours.

 Finally, mentally prepared to start your day —after mindlessly scrolling through your phone for 20 minutes— you unlocked your computer and began reading through the files that Jimin had left on your desk labeled ‘Monday’.

 "Another asshole, who thought he could get away with a hit and run..." you muttered to yourself, as you reviewed the first case.

 The following trials were for a domestic violence case and 2 robberies.

After reviewing the files, you began transcribing some of the information on your computer, adding personal notes based on the evidence that had been collected for each case and saved it all for its intended use in the next 2 hours.

"Since no one likes a slacker, I might as well go through the ones for tomorrow as well."

As expected, there was another case of robbery, one for theft, a case for assault and last but not least a misdemeanor for street racing. 

After an hour of transcribing that called for a well-deserved break, you stretched your arms above your head, sighing softly as the tension was released.

 "Judge... would you like some tea? I'm on my way to the Cafe"

"Ugh Jimin, I love you, why are you so sweet, I'll come with." As you both picked up your belongings and were about to head out to the small cafe across the street, an unforeseen visitor arrived abruptly, startling both you and your secretary.

"Oh, so you're both slacking off now. I thought that was a Y/n thing?"

"I- No judge- we-" Poor Jimin couldn’t even complete a sentence, his mind still in a jumble as a result of the sudden barge into your chamber.

"Seokjin, shut up.” You cut your eyes at his comment. “We are going to the café. You either come with or move out of the way." You laughed a bit while pushing past your best friend #2, making your way out.

Oh, how lucky were you to be able to have them working near you.

 Back from the cafe and ready to face all cases for the day, you walk to your chamber accompanied by Jimin who helped you wear your black robe, both quickly headed to the courtroom for your first trial right after.

Monday had gone by smoothly; all cases being addressed as they should and all sentences set in place.

Tuesday was a better day, the morning had been less chilly than the day prior and you could read a bit before your hearings of the day, since you had proactively  reviewed the cases of today, yesterday.

After the third time hearing it today, a fourth was just unnecessary, however entering the courtroom for the fourth time on that day, you heard the bailiff announcing your arrival.

 “All rise. This court is now in session.” Shuffling could be heard, a sign of everyone in the room getting on their feet. “Honorable judge Y/n L/n Presiding.”

You took your seat and announced to everyone that they could do so too. You took the files that the bailiff handed you and began reading the case.

 “Good morning everyone. Today's hearing is for case 3476, the city vs Lee Simon, Kim Taehyung and Jean Reynolds” you announced.

 “Lee Simon, Kim Taehyung and Jean Reynolds, all three of them, age 26, accused of trespassing private property, injury of a third party and driving over the speed limit, while being timed against each other. All of it initiating from 25th avenue to Map of the Soul street.” You concluded.

“How do you plead?”

“Innocent” “Guilty” “Innocent”

 Internally, you wanted to laugh, but you knew your position required for you to remain serious and focused. It wasn’t the first time a group of friends split due to being involved in a situation they weren’t expected to be in, and it wouldn’t be the last.

 “Seeing that you have different views, let us review the information presented.”

Videos and pictures from street cameras were shown, as well as footed from a dash camera in a hidden police vehicle.

 “Evidence shown so far, seems to portray all three of you as guilty, and the witnesses are yet to come in, excluding the owner of the vehicle you crashed into while running against each other as well as the owner of the private property you drove through.”

 You watched all three of them carefully as you gave them a run through of how this case was going on for them. Two off them looked indifferent, like someone who has done it before, did it this time and will probably do so again.

A chance was soon to be given to all three of them to express why they believed they were innocent, however another piece of evidence was brought in.

“According to this report sent in about your record, you are all repeat offenders, meaning that your options are limited; paying for the legal fees and community service, paying for the legal fees and 1 year jail time or paying for the legal fees, suspension of your driver’s license, a fee of $10,000 and a possibility of impoundment of the motor vehicle used in the crime.”

 "I am going to admit I was there, but I did it for a specific reason, your honor."

"And what reason could that be?"

“Can I approach the bench?”

“Permission granted." The man in question slowly approached you, eyes never wavering from yours.

"I needed the money your honor. I have a daughter..."

"Says here, that you have been detained before and gave out the same reason, so why should we let you off easy Mr. Kim?"

 “So… there is no way we aren’t paying the legal fees -I take it?” the one with the tiger-like eyes spoke up, a small smile playing on his lips as he did so.

“No” the frown on your face was so pronounced, that no area was left for more of his attempt to banter.

“Do I get the easier outcomes if I plead guilty.”

“That’s a possibility...” Now you know why he pleaded guilty. He’s not new to this.

“I have a daughter your honor… I can’t go to jail” He said before you were able to add to your previous sentence.

“That’s for me to decide, however, can’t she stay with a family member?”

“She only has me…” his eyes turned gloomy as he directed his gaze to the floor Infront of you. Should you even trust that action. It could be staged for all you know.

It annoyed you the way how the immediate mention of a child felt like a tool he was using to soften the blow of your possible verdict. However, it still got under your skin and you felt your hard-exterior crumble, allowing your feelings to take over and think about the poor child that would have to deal with an uncomfortable situation.

“How old is your daughter Mr. Kim?”

“four” His demeanor changed entirely the moment he found more time to speak about the hypothetical child he had.

“Who is she with at the moment?”

“A friend”

“Everyone back to their seats…”

You were so predictable. Jungkook would have never softened for something like that.

He would have given him 2 years in jail, taken his car, taken his driver’s license and custody of the child as well, for not being a suitable parent. But no, you had to be like Seokjin, soft hearted and taking people’s feelings into consideration. Bleh.

 “Based on the evidence collected. I am ready to provide a verdict for this case. Lee Simon and Jean Reynolds you are sentenced to serve 6 months of county jail time, pay a fine of $5,000 plus all legal fees and your license will be suspended for 6 months. Kim Taehyung, you are sentenced to a fine of $3,000, suspension of your driver’s license for 6 months, paying the legal fees and community service for 6 months.” You stated re arranging the documentation on your desk and setting them aside.

“Please take them. Mr. Kim shall be escorted to the officer’s department in order to have his rules set in place.”

“Thank you.” A voice said to you right after. You didn’t have to turn to know it was Kim Taehyung, however you did so. He was flashing you a large square smile. It wasn't 1,000 watts like Jimin’s but it was still warm and different, even a bit playful if you looked at it for long.

“That daughter of yours better be real.” You muttered before collecting the final documentation and exiting the room.

But not before hearing.

“Didn’t know they had such pretty judges in here, I should get arrested more often.”

You should have put him in jail. Or maybe not.

It’s funny how you haven’t been able to get your mind to stop remembering his cheeky squared smile and that aura of a playful child in a large man. It's been 2 weeks now.

Yet you can’t forget him walking up into your courtroom with all that confidence, as if he owned the place.

“Ugh”

“Everything ok?”

You gasped loudly, not having heard Jimin enter the chamber as you mindlessly rolled your mouse around and thought about the man who you sentenced to community service a couple of weeks ago.

“You nearly killed me Jimin!” you voiced a little louder than you should have, the fright still showing in your tone.

“I'm sorry" poor kid, all he did was be nice all day.

“You're fine, I just didn’t hear you come in” you answered, returning to aimlessly move your mouse and stare at the open word document on your computer screen.

“Oh! I see. Well in your favor, I was trying to be quiet. Anyways, what are you doing here so early judge y/n?” leave it to Jimin to always worry about others.

“I thought I could… focus on something else by working a little, but the chambers triggered my distractions even more…” You tried internally to not bring it up, but you knew you had to tell someone about it.

About the fact that maybe you might have an itty-bitty tiny crush on a man you barely saw for a span of 40 minutes and convicted for a crime. You are so lame.

Jimin moved around his desk -you assumed- arranging all of his documents for the day and bring his computer to life.

“and what is it?” he asked you after a couple of minutes of comfortable silence.

“What is what?”

“The distraction that's caught your attention, what is it?” his eyes stared at you widely, they looked so earnest and kind. Just wanting to help you with whatever inconvenience you were having.

“Um… well… you’ll probably think it's dumb"

“I promise I won't” he answered so fast, it felt like he was expecting you to decline opening up to him.

“Well…. I… kinda-have-a-small-crush-on-a-man-I-barely-know-and-could-be-a-scofflaw.”

Your sentence had come out abruptly and in such a rapid fire, that you could see the cogs turning in Jimin’s head as he connected all the things you had said and laced them together.

“Did you just say scofflaw?”

“Is that all you caught from my sentence?” flabbergasted, that's what you were with his reaction.

“No, but… really? scofflaw? Not even judge Harry who's 78 uses that term anymore.”

“Not the point Jimin…" frustrated at the weird turn the conversation had taken, you pinched your nose bridge, trying to figure out the young man's train of thought .

“Ok, ok. But is it one of the guys from a couple of weeks ago. The street racer ones?”

“How do you-"

“Eva from the reception said that, Joyce from finance told her that, Hyerin from chamber 5, saw them being called in on their hearing day and that they were all —her words, not mine— as hot as a super-sized bag of flamin hot Cheetos.”

 Now that’s stuck in your mind. Jimin was definitely not helping.

 “Curse you, procrastination!”

 Grocery shopping should have been done weeks ago. But you were tired, and sleepy and distracted and everything in between that could keep you from doing the boring task that  buying your own food was.

 Walking through the aisles in the grocery store, you could hear a little girl talking her —probably parent's— ear off.

 Not paying too much attention to her, you were barely able to catch a couple of words here and there as you walked around picking up what you needed.

 "Fishies would be a good pet because I can't hu't it if I hug it awound his house"

"Why can't I see my own eyes?"

"Can we get vanilla this time, stwabewies we'e yuck!"

"How do clouds float? Why don't they fall?"

"Look! Look! A toy!"

 She sounded so excited and the little lisp with her R's was the cutest, you thought.

 You were almost done with your list, only missing some meat or poultry and a pound of potatoes, —'cause you've been craving gratin potatoes for a while and you were done living a life without them.

 Making your way to the missing items, you could once again hear a conversation going on between the little girl and the other person, but this time the adult with her spoke. It was a grave voice, very deep and somewhat familiar, yet not enough to put a face to it.

 "You are not having a pet, until you understand the responsibilities that come with taking care of an animal" The voice answered the little girl sternly. You could imagine the man's face voided of any emotion and trying to maintain a serious visage. Probably trying to teach his daughter a lesson.

Again, the voice sounded familiar, giving you a tingling sensation in the back of your mind. However, in your distraction, the links that attempted to connect in your mind remained ignored.

 You continued rolling your cart, hastily turning around each corner; ready to pick up what you were missing and bolt home to make the delicious meal you have been craving for.

 However, you were suddenly stopped by another cart that crashed right into yours as they rushed towards you from around the corner.

 "Oof, My bad" - "Oh no! I'm so sorry!"

 You both said in unison.

 “Oh...” Came the immediate reaction from both of you, as you noticed who the person you had bumped into was.

 "So, the whole you having a daughter wasn’t a lie after all"

 "You offend me your honor." Was his reply as he chuckled a bit to himself "But I guess I am not a good example of what a decent human or father should be like..."

 "Oh Hush! We all make mistakes. Even some that land us in Jury or court" You giggled a little trying to soften whatever thought had him thinking he was the worst human ever to walk on this earth.

 Of course, he had made a mistake —a couple of them at that—   but it wasn’t murder, and he was attempting to make an income for his family.

 "What's her name?" You asked him as you both watched her eyeing the fish tank you assumed she saw the fish at before.

 "Yoonah. But she prefers to be called Nah-Nah" His voice mellowed. You looked at him with a smirk on your face, but all you got was the sight of a man watching his daughter with the fondest of gazes. So much love could be found in his eyes, he was proud and filled with warmth. The small smiled that decorated his features said it all.

 “Is she your only daughter?”

 Your question brought him back to the present.

 “Oh, yeah – she is” Was his curt answer. The tone he used made you feel a bit guilty, as if you were way too into his business, so you decided to cut it short.

 “Well it was nice meeting you outside of court Mr. Kim –and little miss Yoonah as well.” Were your final words as you waved your hand swiftly and left to finish your shopping, missing entirely the smile that graced his lips when he heard you address his little girl.

 For some reason, you hoped to see them one more time before you left the store, just to make sure they were ok —even though there was nothing dangerous at a grocery store.

After so much fussing and so many tantrums, Kim Taehyung was finally tired out.

It could be seen from a mile away, just by watching his shoulders slightly slump and Yoonah grinning up at him with a content expression.

 Naturally, the best view of your day was Kim Taehyung walking out of the grocery store with four bags on one shoulder and a small plastic bag in his right hand, filled with water and two gold fish swimming peacefully.

So much for the sterned voice he had back there.

 You lingered a little more on your way to your own car, head turning slightly to your left, just to watch him interact with his daughter. You are sure you look like a creep, but it was so endearing, you couldn’t help yourself.

He kept her close by while he loaded the trunk with groceries and tickled her sides while placing her in her car seat. N sight of a father that didn’t care for his daughter or an irresponsible parent. Yeah, that was going to be your excuse for staring longer than needed.

 Yet what was a little more time for you, was enough to give him a full view of you watching them both with something in your expression that he couldn’t read, but whatever it was, had his heart racing a little more than it should for somewhat of a stranger that could put him in jail.

You’re not sure if it’s one of those times where once you meet someone one time, you end up seeing them everywhere.

How is it possible that on a chill evening in the park, while you were enjoying a slow-paced stroll and a hot chocolate in your hands, you see him again. You are about to start thinking that maybe he is following you and in addition to committing his past crime, he is also a stalker.

But he couldn’t be. He’s not even looking at you. From your short distance from him, you can see his eyes trained on something else. A fond smile decorated his lips as if whatever held his attention was above everything in this world.

From this angle you could appreciate his profile. A very handsome man you should say.

His eyes slowly crinkle into smaller half-moons in favor of his now growing smile taking more space. His teeth now baring and the apple of his cheeks flexing.

Oh! what a sight.

What would it feel like to poke them? you thought to yourself.

Yet, your legs had other plans and were already in action. Your brain had already sent signals to your arms and fingers to poke all soft parts that it came into contact with.

You are a judge, for goodness’s sake, touching someone without their authorization is battery. What are you doing?

 Yet right before you were able to do so you heard her.

“Daddy!” The soft giggles that followed filled the air that surrounded you. You turned your head to the direction of the sound and just in time you caught the sight of a little girl running from the playground into Taehyung’s arms.

Before you even turned to him, he was already catching her, squeezing her tightly in his embrace.

“Did you see that daddy? I did it!”

“Yes, you did princess! And you were amazing! Best cartwheel I have ever seen!”

The little girl giggled and squealed as Taehyung blew raspberries everywhere around her.

 When she finally calmed down, her eyes met yours and her head tilted in questions.

“It’s the groceries lady daddy!”

Turning to look at who his daughter was pointing at, he met you, only 3 steps away from him.

“Jud- Judge Y/n?”

“Hi again Mr. Kim, seems like we keep bumping into each other.”

“So it seems.” Today his smile was a careless one or was it a content one. Either way they were still that remarkable boxy smile.

“Nice to see you again miss Nah-Nah.” You greeted the little girl that had noticed you first and a hearty giggle left her body in return.

“What brings you here?” Asked the man that you had somehow forgotten was by your side or maybe you were just trying to ignore the strong tiger eyes that bore into you by entertaining a conversation with his cute daughter.

“Daddy, can I go to the big slide?”

“Not, without supervision Nah-Nah.” He answered so seriously, it reminded you of the voice in the grocery store.

“But daddy, I am a big gu’l now”

“Nah-Nah…”

“Daddy…” he sighed so loudly; you couldn’t help but laugh at his odyssey.

It was Deja vu from the grocery store and fish all over again. All that big father talk for nothing. He was so whipped for his daughter.

“Ok, let’s make a deal…”

“Yes!”

“You can go to the big slide, but if you get an ‘owie’, I want you to get up and dust off just like big girls do. Ok?”

“Yes, daddy.”

“Ok, princess. Go on”

Not a second went by after his sentence and little Yoonah was already off to an adventure with the rest of the kids in the park.

“She is so precious”

“Thank you”

You both stayed in a comfortable silence, staring into the distance in the direction Yoonah had left of. However, that peace was cut by the man standing near you.

“So, are you following us now your honor?” That playful smirk of his was back, alerting you quickly that he was just attempting at a friendly banter with you.

“Hmm, maybe I am, but I’ll never let you know.” You said winking at him.

He laughed so loud at the action, that you could not hold back a laughter of your own.

“So you do have a sense of humor” He stated after calming down.

“I do, when I am outside of my line of work.”

“Understandable…”

Once again, a comfortable silence fell between you both as you watched his daughter running around filled with glee, playing with other children.

“So, who were the ugly judges you encountered before me?” Now it was your turn to start the conversation and again he laughed. Who would have thought you were this funny.

“So, you did hear that.”

You definitely did and deep within you hoped he meant it. Even though it wasn’t the time or place for his flirting.

“Maybe…”

“I meant it… just in case you were wondering.”

Yes, you were!!!

“Oh! I- umm… Thank you.” You could feel your face heating up, however you refused to end the eye contact you were keeping up since your conversation began.

“Anytime… Like honestly. Any. Time. And every time. I’ll repeat it every time I find it necessary.” He said his smile growing with each word that he sent your way. And you, well you weren’t one to back down on a flirting challenge.

“And how is that possible, if we don’t see each other all the time?” you asked, acting coyly.

“I might have a solution for that, your honor.” Welp. Now you got yourself into something.

Two weeks had gone by since that day.

Two weeks after Mr. Kim had asked for your number and invited you for ice cream with Yoonah, under the excuse of a thank you for not sending him to jail. Needless to say, you quickly corrected his statement to not have him think this was a favor you had done for him, but a decision you had made based on evidence and circumstances surrounding the case.

It had also been a week since Mr. Kim changed from that name to Taehyung.

The mocking that came with you saying his given name for the first time was endless.

“Awww, so no more Mr. Kim?”

“Shut it Taehyung!”

Chris & Ellie Series: Episode 23

Hello lovelies! Hope you guys are having a good day and if not.. I hope tomorrow is better for you. I went back and forth between posting this episode today or waiting until next week...but y’all know I can’t wait... just waiting this long has been killing me haha.

Anyway, with this episode the focus of the main episode (vs the half episodes) is switching to Chris while Ellie will be the focus of the half episodes. That will end once they’re back together again! How long will that be? You’ll just have to wait and find out. 😏

Episode 23: Viva Las Vegas

September 2014

Ready for a night on the town, Chris sat on the sofa in the main living area of the penthouse that he had rented for himself and his friends in celebration of Brock and Tessa expecting their first baby.

Having come straight to Las Vegas after filming had wrapped on the second Avengers movie, Chris had been in town since last night while his friends had only arrived from LA that afternoon. He'd taken the master bedroom and had left the other four to figure out sleep arrangements for themselves. There was always a fight, but in the end, they all usually crashed on the closest bed available regardless of the decisions made earlier in the evening.

90's club music played on the penthouse sound system, making Chris feel more comfortable. It had all been too big and too quiet last night when he'd arrived. He'd planned to just go straight to bed, but that had been derailed when he'd gone into the ensuite bathroom and saw the large bathtub. His thoughts had instantly gone to Ellie and her love of taking baths; specifically, in the large soaking tub in his bathroom at home.

With his mind plagued with thoughts, he'd spent thirty minutes swimming laps in the private pool before taking a shower in the guest bathroom and going to bed, with the doors to the ensuite closed.

"Do you want to talk about it?" a voice asked from behind him.

Pulled out of his thoughts, Chris turned and saw Chucky Kellie standing in the doorway.

Not sure what to say, Chris stayed quiet, but Chucky took that as an invitation to join him.

"Tanya talked to Ellie," Chucky explained. "They invited her to the baby shower back in July. She said that you guys broke up."

"You and Ellie broke up?" another voice piped in.

"I was wondering why you looked like someone had stolen your favorite stuffed animal," a third voice said.

A grunt followed that comment and Chris didn't have to look behind him to know that Bryant had just elbowed Ray in the stomach for his remark.

"Are you guys going to go into the room or are we going to just stand here all night?" the last of his friends, Brock, asked.

Their arrival had given Chris time to think about whether or not he wanted to talk about the Ellie situation. He knew if he said he wasn't ready, they'd all go along with it and they'd go out to dinner and do a bit of gambling just like they'd planned. But even he knew it was time, past time, in fact.

Ever since that fateful day in front of his house, he'd made a point to be honest with himself even if the truth hurt. It had been easier, he supposed, thousands of miles away and busy with work. But now he was officially on a break from filming until the new year. It had seemed ideal, when he'd been planning it, to have fall and winter to relax and get back a sense of peace. But now that it had started, it seemed almost overwhelming. Especially since he had yet to decide where he was going to spend said time off.

One of the guys cleared his throat, subtly reminding Chris that they were all waiting for him to decide if he was up to talking about it or not.

Sighing, Chris said, "Ellie and I broke up."

The lack of reaction made him wonder if they'd all already known. He hadn't known Tanya to be a gossip, but he supposed she would have had to explain Ellie's absence at the baby shower to the other wives. Said wives would have then passed on the information to their husbands and then everyone would have known.

"Did she break up with you?" Ray probed, gently.

"It might have been easier if she had," Chris mused, defeatedly.

The time had come, he realized, to divulge everything that had been going on in his head and in his relationship with Ellie to someone else. As odd as it seemed, the words started coming to him easier than he thought they would. He supposed it was because, while his friends knew Ellie, they had been his best friends since before he'd been famous. They always had his back.

He knew Scott did, too. But it was different.

At the end of the day, Chris knew that his brother would choose him over anyone else that came between them. But when it came to Ellie, Chris knew she had a special bond with his brother. Scott had been with them virtually every setup of the way as they'd gone from being friends to more. And now Scott had been by Ellie's side through the aftermath of it all.

"The first time Ellie and I met," Chris found himself telling his friends. "I was completely naked." He'd never planned to share that story with anyone, but with these four, he felt like he needed to be honest and start at the beginning.

As expected, the four idiots spent a good five minutes laughing after he shared how he and Ellie had met when his mom had hired her as a housekeeper behind his back.

Once they'd calmed down, he continued the story. How he and Ellie had only spent a few weeks with each other before they'd had to share a bed not once, but twice. Then how the two of them, and Scott, had gotten close watching sports and spending time together.

"Wait, let me get something straight," Bryant interrupted. "Are you saying that the two of you hadn't even kissed when we had the kickoff party?"

"We hadn't," Chris confirmed and then followed it up with, "Did it seem like we had?"

His friends exchanged looks before Brock said, "We thought the two of you had been dating when you brought her to the wedding. Your chemistry…"

"What Brock is trying to say, is that you and Ellie seemed like you'd already known each other for a long time when we all met her," Chucky said, cutting in. "The two of you just looked so at ease."

"Even Kady and I noticed," Ray chimed in. "And we spent maybe 5 minutes with you guys."

"And then the way you two were sassing each other at the kickoff party," Bryant added.

Chris nodded as their comments brought to mind one of the fears that had plagued him; that everything had been too easy from the beginning with Ellie.

"It was easy, easier than it had ever been with anyone I've ever dated," he admitted to them. "Ellie and I spent a lot of time at home watching sports. Scott was with us most of the time, but not all the time. We just fell into an easy pattern and then I kissed her at Fenway Park after the Red Sox won the World Series."

"DUDE!" Ray exclaimed, making them all laugh. "Sorry, but that's just awesome." Considering Chris knew that Ray and Kady had met at a Dodgers game, he wasn't surprised his friend felt that way.

"Is that when you two started to officially date?" Brock asked, redirecting the conversation.

Chris shook his head and then chuckled at the memory. "She returned the kiss," he said. "But then she hid from me the next day. And then we went to a Halloween party with my brother and younger sister. I cornered her in a room and made her talk to me." Realizing how bad that sounded he quickly continued, "I mean, I waited for her to get out of the bathroom and asked her if we could talk."

Ray made kissing noises and Chris threw a pillow at him.

"Did you two kiss that night?" Chucky prompted and then smirked when Chris's face flushed.

"Fuck you all," Chris grumbled as they laughed. "Yes, fine. We made out and we might have gone farther if another couple hadn't barged into the room."

Ray let out a catcall.

"How are you married?" Brock asked him.

"Kady loves me," Ray said with a shrug. "But back to story time, Evans. Is that when you two started hooking up?"

Chris shook his head. "She went back to LA the next day and I stayed back east," he told them. "But after kissing her, I knew I wanted to kiss her again. And I really missed her. We had been spending so much time together and then suddenly we weren't. I mean, we texted a lot, but it wasn't the same."

"And when you said you wanted to kiss her again, you mean you wanted to date her right?" Bryant asked.

"Yes, definitely," Chris replied though he felt his heart twinge at the memory. He'd been so convinced last fall that he and Ellie were meant to be together. "She hadn't been so sure. She didn't want to ruin our friendship if it didn't work out."

Those words sucked the humor out of the room and out of the corner of his eyes, he saw his friends straighten. Shit was getting real now.

"I told her that it would be ok," he said with a sigh. "That we owed it to ourselves to explore our feelings. Because she told me she liked me, too." He told them about Ellie's encouragement while he was directing his movie, how he'd encouraged her to submit her resume for an editing job and how she'd told him over the phone on Christmas Eve that she wanted to give them a try.

He didn't get graphic in the details of what had happened in January, but he confirmed that he had taken her up to the bed and breakfast for a romantic getaway. And that he'd helped her celebrate the Seahawks' Super Bowl victory.

"So what happened?" Brock asked him. "When we saw you guys at the Super Bowl, you could hardly keep your hands to yourself. But then at the premiere…"

"They were secretly dating," Chucky reminded him. "He couldn't have his hands all over her."

"Obviously, but Brock is right, things weren't the same that night," Bryant argued before he looked at Chris. "Did something happen?"

"Other than getting messed up in my own head, no," Chris admitted. He sighed and told them about his journal. He knew that Chucky knew about them, after all the two of them had shared a bedroom at one point, but he didn't know the full context of them.

"And you completely shut her out when you got home?" Brock said with a frown after Chris told them.

Chris nodded. "I was so stuck in my own head, I didn't know what to do," he confessed.

The joking from earlier had stopped now that he'd gotten into the serious part of his tale. They'd been through situations like this with him before and he trusted that they'd pull him back from going too far.

Taking a deep breath, he dove headfirst into the abyss that was the downfall of his and Ellie's relationship.

"I wanted to be with her," he told them. "But at the same time, my head kept telling me that it wasn't the right time to be in a real relationship. She didn't press me to get out of the house, to go out in public with her. So we were able to keep it a secret."

He should have taken her out. He realized that now. He shouldn't have kept her a secret.

"Then everyone came for the premiere and there I was, dating someone my mom really liked and I couldn't bring myself to even tell my mom about it," he continued. "My mom isn't stupid though. I'm sure she knew what was going on. But I couldn't bring myself to say anything about it. And I don't know if Ellie wanted to tell her or if she was just following my lead on the whole situation."

He should have told his mom. She would have been happy for them both.

"And the real kicker is that I had to watch my sister introduce my girlfriend to my dad," he said. "It should have been me. That should have been a special moment for the three of us. But I just… I couldn't."

He felt a hand squeeze his shoulder, offering him strength with his confession.

"Tara figured it out and said she approved," he told them. "Then I went on the press tour… and came home to find Ellie's older sister and her husband in town. They weren't staying at the house, but we had dinner with them. I liked them and I thought they liked me, too. But then the next night…"

He paused to gather his thoughts, because it was getting harder for him to talk about it all now. He thought he'd gotten past the pain, but it had been simmering under the surface.

"The next night, Ellie had a fight with her sister, who didn't like that she was living in my house, working for me and sleeping with me," he explained. "She offered Ellie money to help her find her own place. Ellie didn't take it well and she came home upset. She told me about it…"

"And it fed into the fears you already had in your head," Brock surmised. 

Chris nodded then explained, "I pulled away again, but not completely. It wasn't fair to Ellie. I see that now. I wasn't there for her, but I wanted her in my bed and to be there for me."

He felt a mixture of shame and relief as he admitted it out loud.

"She tried to get through to me, but I was so stuck in my head," he sighed. "Then I had a bad dream and made a huge mistake. Easily the biggest mistake of my life." He took a deep breath, trying to work up the courage to explain.

"Here," Ray said, tapping his hand with a shot glass filled with liquid. "I think you need this."

Chris accepted the shot and tossed it back. It burned, but it was almost a welcome relief.

"Do you need a break?" Brock asked him. "We can order room service."

Chris wanted to say no, wanted to continue, but he knew he needed a break.

"Get me a burger," he told Brock. "I'm going to get some air."

Getting up, Chris went outside to the private balcony. Somehow, they'd managed to create a relaxing outdoor oasis in the middle of Las Vegas and hundreds of feet in the air.

While he felt better getting stuff off his chest, he knew the worst was yet to come. He knew his friends wouldn't judge him for his actions, but he didn't know if any of them could mask their disappointment in him.

Hearing the door open behind him, Chris looked over and saw Brock. "We ordered dinner, they said it would be about forty minutes. We told them not to rush since we're nobody special."

A chuckle escaped Chris's lips. His friends were part of the reason he was who he was. They helped keep him grounded.

"You ready?" Brock asked him.

"No, but I want to get it over with," Chris replied. "Do we have beer?"

"Ray and Bryant were popping tops when I left the other room," Brock told him.

Chris followed his friend back inside and to the main living area. Sure enough, five beers were sitting on the coffee table with a bag of chips.

"Thought we might want a snack," Chucky said with a shrug.

Once they were all settled, Chris continued his story. "I had a dream that Ellie and I were together and we had a kid. But she was leaving me because I couldn't give her enough time because of my job," he told him. "And in the dream, she said she should have listened to her sister."

"Fuck," Ray breathed.

"Add the dream to my other thoughts and it was the making of a bad situation in my head," Chris said with a nod.

"So what was the mistake?" Bryant asked cautiously.

"I left," Chris told him. Then clarified. "In the middle of the night. Without saying anything to her."

"Dude…" Ray said, his voice laced with disbelief.

"And when you say you left?" Brock prompted.

"I packed my suitcase and left early for filming," Chris replied.

"Fuck," all four of his friends chorused.

"What did Ellie say when you two talked?" Brock asked him.

Chris didn't say anything as he felt his stomach churning. He focused on the beer bottle in his hand as he tried to will back the emotions that were bubbling just under the surface.

"Chris, please tell me that you and Ellie have talked," Brock said, quietly.

"I can't," he whispered as he blinked back his tears. "And now it's too late."

"What do you mean it's too late," Ray demanded.

"It's been 5 months," Chris said with a shrug. "I thought she was just mad at first. Which I understood, but I thought she'd at least make sure I was ok. And then when she didn't…" He took a shaky breath. "I texted Scott, checking on her. And that's what really ended it. I shouldn't have involved him and I did. And it's a fucking disaster now."

A part of him wanted to stop there, but he knew he couldn't. "I went to see her at the end of July when I found out she was moving out of my house," he explained. "There was a guy with her. And it was clear that she'd moved on."

"Clear how?" Bryant asked, his question immediately followed by a grunt of pain. "Fuck off! It was an honest question. I mean if he saw her making out with some guy, then yeah, she moved on. But if it was just a hug, maybe it was just innocent."

"I didn't stay long enough to see them kissing," Chris told him. "I told the driver to leave as soon as I saw them hugging."

A knock on the door of the penthouse saved him from having to answer any more questions. At least at that moment. He knew his friends wouldn't let the conversation stop there.

Once the food was rolled in, they migrated to the dining table to eat their dinner. Chris was silent as he ate, but the other four made small talk.

It wasn't until an hour later, when they were taking turns playing pool that Chucky asked, "Let's pretend Ellie hadn't moved on for a second. If you knew she was still single, what would you do?"

"I don't know," Chris admitted. "I fucked up."

"Forget that for now, too," Chucky said. "How do you feel about Ellie right now?"

"I think I'm in love with her." The words came out of Chris's mouth without a second of thought. They caught even him off guard, but as they settled, he realized that it was the truth. He'd spent the last six months listening to his head and ignoring his heart. Clearly, his heart had known what was really going on.

"Does that change anything for you?" Brock questioned.

"Yeah," Chris said with a nod. "But not in the way you think. I didn't treat Ellie like I should have. If this guy she is with now is treating her like she should be treated, what right do I have to ruin that for her?"

"But you love her," Ray retorted.

"Isn't there a saying about how sometimes you have to love someone enough to let them go?" Chris said with a small shrug. "Besides, I'm spending the fall and winter back home in Sudbury."

"You are?" Bryant asked. "Since when?"

"Just decided," Chris replied. He shook his head. "I can't go back to the house in LA. There are too many memories there that I'm not sure I'm ready to process."

He saw his friends exchange looks but in the end they all nodded.

"Just know we're here if you need us," Chucky told him.

"I know, thank you," Chris said.

A few days later, Chris went home to Massachusetts and his mom's house. It took him a few days to settle in and to fit himself into the rhythm of the household, but he knew it was the best place for him to be.

It was at the start of his second full week that his mom had gotten the email from Ellie that he had suspected was coming: her two weeks’ notice. His mom had forwarded him the email, since it concerned his house, and he hadn't planned on reading it at all. Then, he'd woken up in the middle of the night with a sudden urge to hear Ellie's voice. He knew he couldn't call her, but he knew reading the email would let him hear her in a way and maybe offer him some closure.

Dear Lisa,

I want to thank you for taking a chance on me last year. You could have hired anyone to be the housekeeper and we both know there were people more qualified than I am. Instead, you chose me and for that I am eternally grateful.

Between my hours at the bookstore and my editing jobs, I find myself running out of hours in the day and during the week. Given that Scott is living in Chris's house permanently, I feel like it is time for me to move on from my job there.

Thank you again for taking a chance on me. It was the kindness of yourself and your family that helped me get to where I am now, finally doing the job I always dreamed of.

A bittersweet feeling came over him as he closed the email app on his phone. Setting the phone back on the bedside table, he stared up at the dark ceiling. He'd hoped to find relief in reading her words, but he hadn't. Instead, he longed to actually hear her talk. To hear her laugh.

As he remembered her laughter, a small smile tugged on his lips. It wasn't one of those melodic ones that people rave about. It was a real laugh. The kind of laugher that included snorts, wheezes and a fully body response. God, he'd loved making her laugh.

Sighing, Chris rolled onto his side. While his mom thought Ellie was just too busy to go to the house, he knew the truth. Ellie was cutting all her ties to him, and after everything he had put her through, he couldn't say he blamed her.

Then his thoughts went to his brother. What would this all mean for Scott's relationship with Ellie? Would she cut him off, too? He hoped she wouldn't and not only for the selfish reason of knowing how she was doing. No, he knew that she was an important person in his brother's life and Scott deserved the best.
