Johan Tobias Sergel (Swedish, 1740-1814) Amor and Psyche, 1787 Nationalmuseum Sweden Regarding the Hellenes and the Barbarians; Greeks called themselves Hellenes, and thus historians use the term Hellenistic to describe the complex cosmopolitan civilization, based on that of Greece, that developed in the wake of Alexander's conquests. Greek culture became the standard by which civilized people identified themselves. Convinced of their intellectual and cultural superiority over inferior people--an idea promoted by the philosophy of Aristotle, Alexander the Great's tutor--civilized people referred to those who did not speak Greek as barbarians, a term derived from the Greeks' description of these people's language as "ba-ba," meaning unintelligible to Greeks. Aristotle also contended that the Greeks were an ideal people because they possessed a medium skin-tone, in contrast to pale northerners. The Greek and Roman people considered the Germanic and some Celtic peoples to be wild, red haired barbarians.

This week's newsletter from AthensLive is out:   Every day life Christs
* Banning a far-right party ends up hurting democracy * The ever-ending Cavalry of patients in Greece * Does this world see now as ‘routine’ babies’ corpses in the Mediterranean?
- are the main headlines to be found inside this highly informative weekly must-read from and about Greece. The government's effort to ban a neonazi party is reported as detrimental to democracy itself. Critics say they were after the ban only to prevent loss of votes. Like their calvary due to insufficient disease, cancer patients who protested hospital shortages were harassed by ND MPs security guards. The brother of one of the train crash victims made a moving plea to boost a children's hospital in memory of his dead sibling. The floating body of a dead child was found off the shore of Syros Island. Shortly after, on the eve of Greek Easter, the PM defended the Evros Wall and a migration policy that caused so much death and suffering.
It cannot be recommended strongly enough to read and share this week's updates on the events and developments in Greece here:

"Aphrodite loves terfs" do you really think a goddess of love formed from a literal penis and the mother of Hermaphroditus, an intersex god who was associated with androgyny and feminine men, fucks around with transphobia?
she is a literal trans icon and to deny that will get you smited by all the gods

PSA: Aphrodite isn't just romantic love, the ancient Greeks had 7 words for love!
eros: your typical love, romance, sex, all that. typically what Aphrodite is known for.
philautia: self-love (which is SO SO important!)
storge: parental love, the bond that parents and children have with each other.
ludus: playful love - banter, teasing, flirting as a joke with your friends.
pragma: longstanding love, that is built upon trust and respect for one another. can be any type of relationship.
xenia: hospitality, a love and care for strangers and the people around you.
agape: true, unconditional love. the love everyone should aim to feel for others and to let others feel for them.
Lady Aphrodite is all of this! She tends to like hearing about relationships (in my experience), and She's always willing to lend some advice!

Power Dynamics in State Relations – A History Lesson (Part III)
Note: This is the third and final part of a three-part essay. If you haven’t read the first two parts published in the previous two weeks, I recommend that you read them first before reading this. The Plataeans admitted that they had indeed become enemies of Sparta, but they attributed this to the Spartans themselves, who had rejected their plea for help against the Thebans (3.55.1). Instead,…

I have a bumper sticker that says “Honk if you worship the old gods.” Today on the highway, got jumpscared by a massive truck honking at me. Got terrified and wondered what I did (we were stuck in traffic and moving slowly), looked over, and the dude was smiling, giving me a thumbs up, and pointed to my bumper sticker. I laughed SO hard.
Whoever you are out there Mr Trucker Pagan Man, solidarity on the highway 😌✊

When you step into sunlight, you honor Apollo. When you admire the moon, you honor Artemis. When you admire cloud shapes, you honor Hera. When you smell petrichor, you honor Zeus. When you laugh at a joke, you honor Hermes. When your body twitches to dance at a particularly upbeat music, you honor Dinoysus. When you enjoy the first bite of your breakfast, you honor Demeter. When you choose your peace over any conflict, you honor Athena. When you warm yourself up by sheltering yourself in blanket, you honor Hestia. When you listen to Ocean sounds, you honor Poseidon. When you smell flowers, you honor Persephone. When you admire the coolness of first day of Autumn, you honor Hades. When you wear your favourite jewellery, you honor Hephaestus. When you smile, you honor Aphrodite. When you exercise, you honor Ares. When you light a torch in a dark room, you honor Hekate.
Your body is a shrine to Gods, your being an act of devotion for them. You, by yourself, are enough for them.
