Hellboy was still getting used to the new layout of his room. Having recently been renovated due to his new girlfriend the place was more spacious and clean. You see his girlfriend, Y/N L/N, was a witch. While she brought more cats she also brought her work and work space, and her tidiness. Unlike the demon she liked to keep the place clean and organized. Which wasn’t a problem since it became a habit to clean together regularly. So much of a habit that he even cleaned while she was on a mission without him.

He liked the fact that he didn’t argue with her as much as well. Life was nice. The cats were well taken care of, the apartment was clean, they were happy. He especially liked the fact that she always took care of him after missions.

They were also a great team together. She motivated him to be a better person and she was always so kind to him. He couldn’t stop with the reasons he loved her.

The mutual love for cats was one of the biggest reasons. He doesn’t think he’s ever been happier.

Sometimes the two of them cuddle up on the couch and watch movies until you both fall asleep.

Tonight was no different.

Midnight, my familiar, was curled up in my lap as I was cuddled into my boyfriend’s side with my legs draped over his lap. We were watching an action movie and curled up on the couch. The soft blanket around us made the moment even more tender as Anung rubbed circles on my thigh mindlessly. Every once in a while he would kiss the top of my head and squeeze me closer.

Every time he did I would smile and snuggle closer.

Earlier today he returned from a long mission and said that he just wants to spend time with me.

“Hey, can we talk about something?” Anung asked.

“Sure, what’s up?” I looked up at him.

He paused the movie before speaking. “We’ve been together for a while now.” He started.

“Yes, is something wrong?” My eyebrows furrowed.

“No, nothing is wrong. You know I love you, and I’d do anything for you.” He continued.

“Yes?” I looked at him in confusion.

“I know we haven’t talked about it… but I’d like to ask you to marry me…” his eyes met mine, his filled with fear and desperation.

I was speechless. Of course I would love to marry him, but how? Maybe this is just something we’d have to fight for. I’d be happy to.

“I’d love to marry you.” I smiled brightly.

Relief washed over his face as he cupped mine in his large hand and placed his lips on mine.

He pulled away and rested his forehead on mine and looked into my eyes. “It’s a plan then.”

I giggled and kissed him again.

The rest of the night was spent in each other’s arms.

A Timely Visit

Hellboy is called in to check on a local agent of B.P.R.D who has gone MIA (Missing in Action) over three days ago. However, he finds you, a local witch, demeaning the young man for harassing a harmless group of monsters.

Sorry for the lateness of this!!

When HellBoy was given this job; he expected the worst.  Some poor agent obviously been eaten, torn to shreds or turned into some kind of monster. It wasn’t rare for this to happen, but it still didn’t make the job any easier. The agent’s mission summary was pretty straight forward. 

Find a nest of unknown monsters and report back. 

Hellboy’s mission was just as easily explained. 

Find the agent and bring him back. Dead or alive.

But unfortunately, it wasn’t that easy.  After the agent went MIA, not only did his reports stop coming in, but the trail went cold merely hours into Hellboy’s investigation.  So far, Hellboy managed to uncover the apartment the Human was using to scope out the nest. It sat adjacent to an over-pass, and nestled in-between a storm canal and the wall of the roads, was a mess of steel walls and carefully braided vines.  The nest, or more like a few small huts mushed together, was carefully out of sight from any passing Humans. But, in the abandoned building the agent had been held up in; it was in clear view. And whatever the agent found obviously hadn’t been happy with the Human’s intrusion. HellBoy had spoken with said nest, a nice bunch of grotesque looking beasts; but very hospitable. With some very nice home-made stew and a more than homely welcome. Especially after Hellboy arrived with nothing but a smile and the badge accompanying his reason of being nearby. The creatures explained that the idiot agent had opened fire on the young-lings that found him in his hide-out.  The Kids themselves were unharmed, but the trauma definitely added a few years of needed therapy. The kids then explained they wanted to invite the agent down for dinner, since he looked really cold up on top of the building over looking their home, but he got scared and tried to shoot them.

“I don’t think he understood us,” One of the kids said. Their accent was thick and heavy, almost too much for Hellboy to make out the words. “He seemed terrified when we told him we didn’t want to hurt him.”

Damned rookies. HellBoy had thought to himself. “Did he do anything else? Shoot at the nest? Make a call?” 

The creatures all shook their heads. The mother clutched her young-lings, soothing the smallest one as it sniffled quietly.  “The Human left in a hurry. But he didn’t get far.” The mother said. “Our neighbour heard the commotion and ran over. She took him away.”

Hellboy knew exactly who “she” was. He had hoped that she wouldn’t be involved. But she could smell trouble from a mile away. Especially if it was B.P.R.D. business. And she did love sticking her nose into B.P.R.D trouble. 

“She’s a witch, but we promise she didn’t hurt the Human!” The creature was quick to reassure Hellboy. He chuckled softly and waved his hand as a dismissal to their worries. 

“I know her. Don’t worry, she’s not in trouble. But the agent surely will be.” Hellboy assured them. Slurping down another bowl of stew the elderly creature handed him. The beasts only saw the agent once after that, when he came grovelling to them begging for their forgiveness and helping them clean up around their nest. But when he was done, he disappeared in a cloud of purple smoke. 

HellBoy would have to report the witch’s involvement. Thankfully the agency didn’t need her description or ID.  She was the only witch in town. And she was high on the “keep an eye on” list. But only because she’s more than once beaten some sense into some agents about non-human safety and information. She was the boogeyman seasoned agents told rookies about. 

The only thing was, her home was a bastard to find. Since she teleported around the city and barely let anyone inside. 

“I’m cautious,” She would say whenever HellBoy complained about it. 

“No, you’re a pain in the ass.” HellBoy would always reply. But he knew this world wasn’t exactly nice to magic users. He mostly just complained to be an annoyance. 

But this time, finding the moving house wasn’t as hard. It was nestled between two trees in the city’s larger parks. Protected and made invisible by magic. HellBoy would have liked to say he did a lot of really good detective work to find it. But in reality, he just dialled her emergency number and waited for her to pick up.

You left the stove on to simmer. Turning down the heat just a smidge so it didn’t boil over or start hissing angrily.  Your phone sat on the agent’s knee. Just where you left it; along with the threat of if he kept moving and dropped your phone on the tiled floor, you’d hex him.  A simple, vague but very open threat. 

The agent watched your every move as you approached. Flinching a little as you scooped up the phone and answered with a sing-song:  “Red! What’s up, Horny Boy.” 

“You know, the usual. Detective work. Search and rescue.” Hellboy replied. Keeping to the shadows of the buildings. But he really couldn’t avoid the people in the area as he crossed the street into the park. 

“Ah, so the Bureau finally realised it’s missing an idiot.” Your voice turned bitter at the words. Setting your gaze on the bound up man on your couch. He hadn’t moved in some time, but you had the chains around his ankles and wrists for that.

“Dad noticed the lack of stupid questions. You haven’t hurt him have you?” HellBoy asked. Ignoring the stares and side glances he attracted from the civilians who were using the park. Even with his hood up, people could see the obvious vast red chest poking through his jacket.  He wasn’t exactly subtle.

You snorted softly, an obvious irritated tone layering your voice. “I wish I could! He almost killed children, Red! He’s lucky it was me who found him. Or else we wouldn’t be talking about him.” 

“But instead you made him scrub a monsters nest and beg for his life.” HellBoy said with a grin. He adored how fired up you got about the people in his father’s agency. It was always a good show whenever you were called in to help HellBoy out with something. The venom between you and Professor Bruttenholm would make a dragon keel over and die. 

“I didn’t make him beg for his life... though that would have been satisfying.” You admitted and HellBoy laughed. Stepping though the sigil’s protective circle around your house, he waited by your door as he heard the room inside shift and change. 

Once your circle detected Hellboy’s presence, you left the large singular room that held the agent and stepped into an elevator. Once the silver gates were shut, it began to glide upwards. There was no grinding of metal or the screech of gears. Just the gentle, tell-tale tingle of magic wafting from your hands. It carried you up from the basement of your home to the front door.  The house itself was just a decoy. Something to keep intruders from getting to close to your actual home deep below.  A death-trap was a fine name for your the first floor. 

When the elevator came to a halt behind the front door, you hung up the phone and swung it open. Hellboy had just reached the house. Fist raised to knock.  He carried on the conversation as he stepped into the elevator next to you.

“Dad wouldn’t like this guy to be harmed, so is he badly injured from the kids or no?” HellBoy asked, having to duck his head to fit through the doorway. You shook your head. Replying as the gates closed behind him and the elevator started to sink into the floor.

“He wasn’t injured. A few bruises but that was his own fault. He fell down a flight of stairs when he was running away.” You explained and HellBoy couldn’t help but chuckle. 

“He’s new.” He told you. 

“I can tell.” You replied with a sour tone. Crossing your arms over your chest in an act of showing your irritation. But you chatted on the way down. It had been a few months since you and HellBoy got to talk without the Bureau breathing down your necks.  The last time you two talked was after you were hired to fight a coven of child-eating witches. It had been messy, and caused a small existential crisis in you. But it was for the greater good.  You may not get along with the Professor, but you two at least agreed that there were monsters that needed to be put down. And the Human race needed to be kept safe.  Even if you had to kill your own kind and witness horrific things; it needed to be done.

As the elevator came to a stop, the room opened up into the large basement. It didn’t look like any witch hovel, but that was one of the things HellBoy liked about you.  You were powerful, sure. But you kept to the modern times. Things were kept in jars, tinted so he couldn’t see the contents, but everything had a label. And mostly everything was inside fridges or hot boxes to keep fresh.  You had tvs and gaming consoles. A few computer monitors set up to keep an eye around your home. Music played through giant speakers hooked up to a blue-tooth device. Nothing gave off a rank smell. And the sofa looked clean, apart from where the agent sat with his hands and feet bound with silver and a rag stuffed into his mouth.  You ignored the agent and went over to the stove to check on your food. You weren’t in the mood to deal with his incoherent mumbling right now.

HellBoy however, whistled loudly as he approached the man. Taking a seat next to him and patting him on the shoulder.

“You look like shit.” HellBoy told him. Yanking the gag out of the agent’s mouth and throwing it on the coffee table. “So, had a nice visit with the witch?” 

“She’s crazy!” The agent hissed. Terrified eyes flicking between you and Hellboy. “She threatened me with a curse!” 

“Only to shut you up.” You sighed, slipping by the fridge to grab a beer. Chucking it to Hellboy as you approached. Shooting the demon a sharp look when he almost dropped the glass bottle. You sat on the arm of the couch next to Red. Glaring daggers at the agent as he started to shake.  He was sweating profusely and already there was a patch of moisture around his ass. “Oh come on! This couch is going to be a swimming pool if you keep doing that.” 

“S-Sorry,” The agent mumbled. And HellBoy shook his head, taking a swig from the beer as he playfully nudged the man with his shoulder. 

“Don’t worry about her. (Y/N) is a sweet-heart. A little crazy, but sweet.” 

“Watch it, Red.” You warned, but there was still a smile there. “I can still hex you, too.” 

“What could you do? Make me ugly?” Red asked. Leaning back against the couch, totally ignoring the hopeful look the agent was giving him. “Already beaten you too it, hag.”

“I could make you sexy. Wouldn’t that be a change.” You teased. Glancing down at the agent.  You sighed and clicked your fingers, releasing the magic that held the chains around his limbs. They fell away with a clatter of metal and the agent looked spooked enough to run. “Relax, rookie. You can’t leave the basement without my-” 

Before you could finish, the agent leapt across the coffee table and made a run for the desk on the far wall.  You watched him for a second, confused to what he was doing. Until your eyes latched onto the gun on the table he was running for.  You swore and dived behind the couch just as he reached it. You heard the bang, and somewhere glass shattered and a bullet ricocheted off the walls.  You didn’t raise your head until you heard a body hit the ground with a mere huff of air. 

Peaking around the side of the couch, you saw Hellboy reach down and grab the man by the scruff of his coat. And then, none to gently, flinging the man over his left shoulder. The gun lay crushed on the floor to his right. 

“Fucking hell.” You huffed. Standing up from cover to sit on the couch. Your hands shook and you felt your chest tighten. “I was gonna give him some of my spaghetti as an apology for my hospitality.”

Hellboy carried the man over to the elevator, throwing him inside and slamming the gate shut.  “To be honest, you should have kept him unconscious.” Hellboy grumbled. Coming over to sit next to you.  He was a little awkward with giving comfort, but he knew his presence was enough to help calm you down. His human hand took hold of yours, squeezing it as you leaned against him.

“I probably deserved it. I’m getting more witchy with my kidnappings now. More cackles and spell-work. Some of your dad’s men don’t seem to take witch’s seriously.” You said. And Hellboy nodded. 

“Dad has been considering making you a consultant with the new guys. Help them understand what they will be going up against.” Hellboy told you. Resting his temple against the top of your head. “After this, the agent will have to go through his training again. So, it’d be amusing to see him go through some drills with you in charge.” 

You chuckled at the thought.  It was a consideration you never thought would come around.  You hummed in thought. It wouldn’t be so bad working with the Bureau, but you’d have to take it up with the Professor before you took it on. 

“I’ll think about it.” You said. You then moved away from Hellboy, nudging him playfully. “You should get that fucker to a hospital. He looks like you hit him with a bus.” 

“First, I want some of that food.” Hellboy said. Wrapping his arm around you in a playful attempt to put you in a choke-hold. Laughing as he scrubbed his knuckles against the top of your head. Messing up your hair until you managed to struggle out of it.  You pushed him, poking out your tongue. 

“Fine, fine. But then I want that agent out of my house!”

Little Red Dress

Hellboy (2019) x Plus Size/Chubby Reader 

Imagine: After ignoring you for a few weeks, you figure a way to get Hellboy’s attention. (Takes place after the movie but the professor didn't die)

Never in a million years did you think you would end up crushing on someone like Hellboy, or Big Red as you liked to call him. It started when you were picked for a research team by Professor Broom himself and you were just supposed to be behind the scenes and away from the action. You followed those rules but Hellboy was never one for following orders and went as he pleased. He met you when he crashed through the ceiling into the library after a fight with his father and he got so angry that he punched the ground so hard it broke underneath him. 

He had been laying on the rubble of wood for a few minutes before he got up and finally realised that you were stood behind him, a stack of books in your hand. You smiled at him, “You must be the Professor’s son. It’s nice to meet you. I’m (Y/N).” Hellboy had initially been drawn to you from the way you didn't look at him in fear or disgust. You were the first person, excluding his father, that treated him like a normal person from the beginning. 

After that encounter, he started asking questions about you to his father, here and there to not seem suspicious, but nothing could fool the professor. He soon realised that his son was strangely fond of you and had you moved to work as his assistant, meaning you would see a hell of a lot more of Hellboy. The professor assumed that if you were around then maybe he wouldn't be so keen to leave all the time. 

Just like the professor expected, Hellboy stuck around a little more but he wouldn't really talk to you, just make excuses to be in the same room and watch you. You didn't really notice it, you were pretty much always on your feet and had something to be doing to realise that you had a set of eyes on you most times. It got to the point where the professor tried to play matchmaker since he was getting bored of son’s relentless pining. 

Soon, you and Hellboy were paired together for missions and while you were scared of going into the field, you knew that Hellboy could likely take just about anything. After you both nearly died after an attack from a witch, you both started to relax and become comfortable around each other. The two of you became fast friends and you were glad to have someone to rely on when you needed them. 

That was a year ago and lately, you could feel the dynamic of your relationship changing into something else and you actually didn't mind. You didn't care about the fact that Hellboy was technically devil spawn, he was one of the most genuine and nice guys you've ever met. You remember the night you started to feel any attraction to him. 

You’d just come back to your room at the base, the professor insisted you move into his home since you spent most of your time there and he didn't see the point in you wasting money on the rent of an apartment you were rarely in. It was also for your safety but you didn't complain about it. You’d been on a date, first one in a good few years and when you met the guy, he was completely different than the first time you met up. He was rude and self-centered. Basically, the worst kind of guy that ever existed. You'd left once he made comments about your weight, saying that you'd have to lose a few pounds if you wanted anything serious with him so he could be seen with you in public. 

You told Hellboy everything, the two of you sat on the couch in the living room. You were still dressed up and eating a tub of ice cream while Hellboy was watching some weird tv show he liked. Hellboy just grunted, “He sounds like a dick,” “He was, but yeah, I guess I should lose a few pounds if I want to get someone better.” 

Hellboy had scoffed, “That’s ridiculous, you’re perfect as is. Don't let that asshole change your mind.” You had stopped the scoop of ice cream headed into your mouth and turned your head to look at Hellboy. He wasn't looking at you so you had the chance to just stare at him for a bit. You felt your heart race just a little bit faster than usual and a weird feeling in your lower stomach. That was your cue to stop looking so you just ignored it and went back to eating your ice cream. 

From then on, you found yourself noticing things you didn't before. Well, you noticed them but everything he did seemed to have a different effect on you than before. The way he laughed, spoke, joked about, just anything he did in general was making you feel a weird attraction to him that you couldn't explain. Well, that was until a few days ago. You’d met up with Alice, the two of you had met a couple months back and you made sure to check in with her at least a couple times a week. 

“Yeah, I just don't know what’s wrong with me,” “Are you for real? It's so obvious, you like him.” You had refused to believe her at first and you changed the topic but then you couldn't get the idea out of your head. Maybe she was right. You hadn't been the one to be shy about your feelings so once you finally decided that there was a possibility that Alice was right and you liked him more than a friend, you needed to tell him. 

“I like you.”

You wished you’d never told him. It hadn't gone well. It didn't go bad though, either. He just kind of stood there and stared at you. Then he went to the fridge and pulled out a beer so you left before he turned around. Since then, you hadn't seen him. Which brings us to now. You were invited to a birthday party that Alice was having. When you talked to her on the phone, she told you that she would make sure that Hellboy would be coming. 

There was three ways that you could do this. One, you could just stay home and not go to the party at all, except you’d already promised Alice that you would and you didn't want to miss her birthday party. Two, you could go and completely ignore him, giving him a taste of his own medicine and avoid him at every turn. Or three, you could go all out and have a good time without caring about the demon that you couldn't get out of your head.

In your little red dress and heels, you walked into Alice’s apartment and your eyes scouted for the birthday girl. You saw her and the two of you smiled and she ran over to you, “You look good, trying to impress a certain someone?” You shook your head but the both of you knew that wasn't true. The two of you talked for a little bit before one of her other friends arrived and she left to greet them. You were left by yourself for a little bit until you headed into the kitchen to get a drink. There wasn't much choice to choose from so you decided on just a bottle of beer. 

“Since when do you drink beer?” You jumped and turned around, your hand over your chest, “Don't fucking sneak up on people, jackass.” Hellboy chuckled then his face turned serious, “Sorry.” “It’s fine, just don't do it again.” Hellboy scoffed, “I wasn't talking about scaring you.” “I know.” You looked down and your lips curved into a small smile. There was a little silence before he said, “You look amazing.” “I know.” This time you both chuckled and you looked up to see him smiling at you. You walked closer and softly shoved his shoulder, “I missed you, idiot.” 

Hellboy sighed, “I know. I...missed you too.” “Then why’d you stay away?” Hellboy looked around the room full of people before gently grabbing your upper arm and leading you outside onto the balcony. You sat on the stairs for the fire escape while Hellboy leaned against the railing. “I was scared.” “You? Scared?” You wanted to laugh but Hellboy’s serious expression took the amusement out of the situation, “What were you scared of?” 

“That if we went down this path, you'd eventually realise that you could do so much better than me.” You hummed, “Maybe I could do better, but that doesn't mean I want better. I guess it's up to you to take that risk and trust me.” Hellboy didn't look at you until you got up to stand next to him, your shoulder touching his bicep. He wrapped his normal arm around you, realising you must be cold. 

“I can be jealous and I drink a lot.” You laughed, “You think I don't know that? There’s nothing I don't know about you and you can’t scare me away, Big Red.” Hellboy smirked, pulling you closer, “So I guess we’re doing this then.” “I guess we are.” You moved to turn on your side a little, pressing yourself against his chest. 

“I’m not wearing anything under this dress.” “Are you trying to kill me?”

Kapitel 1: Kontrolle

Kennt ihr das? Wenn eine Situation in der ihr euch gerade befindet so surreal wirkt, dass ihr euch fragt ob ihr sie gerade wirklich so erlebt oder alles nur Einbildung ist? Wenn euer Leben still zu stehen scheint und ihr fragt euch wie es nur dazu gekommen ist?

Bäume und Häuser zogen zügig vorbei als du einen Blick aus dem Fahrzeug warfst. Aus deiner Trance erwacht drehst du dich nach vorn und suchst nach Kontakt. Es war kaum eine Stunde her, als dich schwarzgekleidete Anzugträger an einem Museum abgeholt hatten. „Miss Y/N, richtig? Agent Clay von der B.P.R.D. Mein Vorgesetzter möchte Sie kennenlernen. Bitte seien Sie kooperativ und steigen ins Auto“, sprach einer von ihnen zu dir. Erschöpft, aber keineswegs überrascht gabst du ohne jeglichen Widerstand nach. Dir war klar, dass deine Aktion für Aufmerksamkeit gesorgt hatte. Aber welche Wahl hattest du denn schon gehabt?

Dein Mund war trocken. Also schlucktest du bevor du eine Frage stelltest, die dir während der gesamten Fahrt schon auf der Zunge lag. „Was genau ist das B.P.R.D.?“ Kurz dachtest du, dass dich niemand gehört hatte, weil keine Antwort kam. Dann aber öffnete sich ein kleines Fenster zum Fahrerbereich. „Ich kann verstehen, dass Sie viele Fragen haben. Aber wir sind bald da und der Professor wird Ihnen dann alles erklären. Also genießen Sie doch den Rest der Fahrt und ruhen sich noch etwas auf dem Rücksitz aus.“ Die Antwort kam von Clay. Er war der Einzige, der zu ihr sprach. Seine beiden Kollegen, der Fahrer und ein weiterer Agent schienen jeglichen Kontakt zu dir zu scheuen. Allesamt schienen großgewachsene und trainierte Männer zu sein. Ihre Kleidung und ihr Verhalten deuteten auf Geheimdienst. Sie hatten Angst, das spürtest du. Nur vor was genau war unklar. Vielleicht vor dir? Du fühltest dich zu platt um tiefer zu graben. Seufzend machtest du es dir gemütlich und schlossest die Augen.

Das Knallen der Autotüren weckte dich aus deinem kurzen traumlosen Schlummer. Gentlemanlike öffnete Clay dir die deine. Amüsiert beobachtete er dich wie du dich umsahst. Ihr standet vor einem modernen massiven Gebäude. »Was für ein hässlicher Betonklotz«, dachtest du. Die Aussicht gefiel dir hingegen sehr. Das Gebäude lag in einem Gebirgshang. Frischer kühler Wind blies hier und ließ die Bäume und Büsche tanzen. Er bereitete dir eine leichte Gänsehaut. Es war gerade Ende August. Wie wäre es hier wohl erst im Winter? Agent Clay begleitete dich zum Eingang während sich seine Kollegen um das Fahrzeug kümmerten und wohl in einer Art Tiefgarage parkten. Nach dem er sich zu erkennen gegeben hatte ertönte ein Signal und die Tür öffnete sich. Vorbei an zwei Wachen, welche ihn freundlich Grüßten kamt ihr durch eine Eingangshalle mit Andenken von gefallenen Agents. Auch war da ein Symbol. Das gleiche zierte die Uniformen der Wachen und war auch auf dem Anzug deiner Begleitung zu sehen. Es war kreisrund und beinhaltete eine Hand die ein Schwert erhoben hielt und ein Dreieck. Vermutlich war dies, das Symbol der B.P.R.D., dachtest du dir.

Auf dem Weg zum Büro des „Professors“ erntetest du hin und wieder von der ein oder anderen Person, welche auch durch die Gänge wanderte, neugierige Blicke. Schien wohl nicht all zu oft jemand neues hier aufzutauchen. In Begleitung des Agents wurden dir allerdings keine Fragen gestellt. Die meisten Mitarbeiter hier waren männlichen Geschlechts. Eine Ausnahme bildete eine junge Frau, die dir mit ihrer Lederjacke und Dreadlocks nicht ganz ins Bild passte. Sie stand vor einem Aufzug und fluchte. „Hey, Alice. Stimmt etwas nicht?“, fragte dein Begleiter sie. Die Angesprochene drehte sich genervt um. „Ah, Clay. Ja. Hellboy scheint sich wieder am Steuerpult vergangen zu haben. Müssen wohl wieder alle laufen.“ »Hellboy? War das ein Codename?«, fragtest du dich. Dein Blick fiel auf den Aufzug, welcher von außen noch funktionstüchtig aussah. Währenddessen musterte dich das Mädchen argwöhnisch. Sie schien nicht viel jünger zu sein als du. „Das ist die Kleine, die dich Broom hat holen lassen?“ „Ja“, antwortete Clay schlicht. Dies schien Alice zu reichen, denn sie stellte keine weiteren Fragen. Zu Dritt wandertet ihr durch das breite Treppenhaus. Runter ins Untergeschoss des Betonklotzes. Es dauerte nicht lange und ihr standet vor einer großen zweiflügligen Tür. Alice wünschte dir noch viel Glück und verschwand dann in einem der anderen Räume. Dein Begleiter klopfte an. „Herein“, ertönte es von drinnen.

Mit einem leichten Schwung öffnete er die Tür und kündigte dich an. „Gut gemacht, Clay. Hol´ dir für den Rest des Tages frei. Aber vorher schau bitte noch mal nach ihm. Er hatte wieder einen Wutanfall,“ sprach ein älterer Herr. Er trug ebenfalls einen eleganten Anzug. Die schwarz-grauen Haare nach hinten gekämmt. Dein Begleiter nickte, verabschiedete sich und ging. Der ältere Mann fingerte an einer Brille herum während er dich genauer beobachtete. „Bitte setz dich, mein Kind. Du musst viele fragen haben“, meinte er dann. Du kamst seiner Forderung nach, obwohl du nach der mehrstündigen Autofahrt keinerlei Drang verspürtest dich erneut irgendwo niederzulassen. „Ja, die habe ich allerdings. Meine ersten wären. Was ist das B.P.R.D. und was wollen Sie von mir?“ Der Mann lächelte dich freundlich an. „B.P.R.D. steht für „Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense“. Wir sind eine Behörde zur Untersuchung und Abwehr paranormaler Erscheinungen. Heute um 4 p.m. ist ein Fanatiker Nimues in das Salem Witch Museum eingebrochen um „Ungläubige“ zu töten. Sie waren nicht nur dabei, sondern haben den Terrorakt verhindert. Und das einfach nur mit reden...“

»Oh, nein!« Du musstest nicht in seinen Geist blicken um zu wissen, was er als nächstes sagen würde. „...Das war schon eine große Leistung. Unerklärlich für jegliche Menschen vor Ort. Diese „Überredungskünste“. Wir haben etwas über Sie recherchiert, Y/N. 6 Wohnortswechsel in den letzten 3 Jahren. Und zu den Zeiträumen in denen Sie sich wo aufhielten geschahen dort wundersame Vorfälle. Ein von einer unbekannten Person verhinderter Ladendiebstahl, bei der sich der Dieb anschließend selber stellte und entschuldigte. Ein Polizist der 2 Tage durch die Steppe wanderte. Als man ihn fand, erwachte er wie aus einer Trance und konnte sich an nichts erinnern. Nicht einmal warum er so lange gelaufen war. Und ein junger Mann der sich selbst ins Schienbein schoss. Im Krankenhaus erzählte er anschließend, dass es ihm ein kleines Mädchen beholfen hätte…“ „Das mit dem Schienbein war ein Unfall“, platzte es unbedacht und mit zittriger Stimme aus dir raus. »Verdammt! Das hast du davon wenn du immer denkst dich vor jedem rechtfertigen zu müssen. Jetzt sperren Sie dich ein!« Nervös kautest du auf deiner Unterlippe rum. Noch zu schwach um deine „Gaben“ erneut einzusetzen blieb dir nichts anderes möglich, als abzuwarten was nun geschehen würde. Und gegen jeglicher Erwartungen wollte man dich Freak nicht einsperren. Professor Broom lächelte dich nur freundlich an. „Keine Sorge. Sie sind nicht hier, weil wir Sie einsperren wollen. Im Gegenteil. Wir nehmen hier kooperative paranormale Wesen wie dich auf. Ich möchte, dass Sie für uns arbeiten. Sie scheinen sehr „überzeugende“ Fähigkeiten zu besitzen. Das ist genau das, was ich zurzeit brauche.“ Du schlucktest und meintest: „Ich werde niemanden für Sie töten!“ Broom nickte wissend. „Das wollen wir auch gar nicht. Mir geht es nur darum jemanden hier zu haben, der erhitzte Gemüter runter fahren lässt…“ „Wie dieser Hellboy?“, fragtest du ihn. Er schaute etwas verwundert. „Ich weiß nicht wo Sie diesen Namen gehört haben, aber ja. Sie würden unter anderem mit Hellboy zusammen arbeiten. In erster Linie geht es mir aber um einen anderen Agent. Agent Benjamin Daimio.“

Völlig lautlos und wie aus dem Nichts schritt eine Gestalt aus einer schattigen Ecke des Raumes. Dein Atem stockte bei seinem Anblick. Es handelte sich um einen großgewachsenen muskulösen Mann asiatischer Abstammung. Er trug wie Alice eine schwarze Lederjacke. Statt einer normalen Jeans allerdings eine militärische Cargohose und ein paar Military Boots. Ziemlich markant waren ein paar lange Narben, welche eine seiner Gesichtshälften zierten. Es schien so, als hätte ihn mal ein großes wildes Tier angegriffen. Trotz allem wirkte der mysteriöse Fremde auf dich ziemlich attraktiv. Aber irgendwas an ihm strahlte Gefahr aus. Wie ein majestätischer sibirischer Tiger – schön aber tödlich. Ein Räuspern des Professors brachte dich in die Gegenwart zurück. Peinlich berührt wurde dir bewusst, wie lange du ihn wohl angestarrt haben musstest. Gleichzeitig schloss sich dein Mund, der die ganze Zeit wohl leicht geöffnet gewesen sein musste. Du blicktest zu Boden und batest diesen inständig um die Erlaubnis in ihm versinken zu dürfen. Ein leichtes unterdrücktes Lachen war zu hören. Langsam schautest du wieder auf. In Benjamin Daimios Gesicht hatte sich ein amüsiertes Lächeln gebrannt. »Verdammt! Das zum Boden hab ich jetzt nicht ernsthaft laut gesagt, oder?« Ein weiteres Räuspern erklang. „Daimio ist einer unserer besten Agents. Er besitzt ähnlich wie du besondere Fähigkeiten. Leider aktivieren sie sich immer öfter und werden zur Gefahr für alle Anderen. Er hat sich dann nicht immer unter Kontrolle. Ihre Aufgabe wäre es ihn also zu begleiten und dafür zu sorgen, dass er möglichst stressfrei durch den Tag kommt. Vor Ihrem Einsatz müssten wir allerdings genauer wissen, was Sie können und austesten wie stark Ihre Fähigkeiten gegenüber anderen paranormalen Wesen sind.“ Es klang nicht wie eine Frage, mehr wie eine Aufforderung. „Klar. Ich kann gut Kaffee machen, massieren und ich kenne zahlreiche Achtsamkeitsübungen… ,“ scherzte ich. „… Ehrlich Sir. Das ist so verrückt. Ich meine, ich bin mein ganzes Leben Niemandem begegnet, der so war wie ich bin. Paranormal oder wie Sie es nennen. Und nun kommen Sie auf mich zu und bieten mir auch noch einen zu meinen Fähigkeiten passenden Job an und einen Ort an dem ich akzeptiert wäre. Woher soll ich wissen, dass Sie mich nicht für irgendwelche Experimente einsperren wollen oder fürs Töten anderer Menschen dressieren wollen? Woher soll ich wissen, dass Sie nicht mit mir spielen?“ Auf dem Gesicht des Professors legt sich erneut ein mildes Lächeln. Dieses entglitt ihn allerdings als jemand urplötzlich die Türen auf trat.

Rein gestürmt kam ein Wesen, dass du sonst nur aus Horrorfilmen und Mythen kanntest. Ein großer kräftiger rothäutiger Mann mit zwei abgeschliffenen Hörnern und einem Teufelsschwanz. Ein Dämon. »Der alte Mann hat nicht gelogen!« Er schwankte etwas beim gehen. Wie ein Betrunkener. Sein benebelter Blick lag auf Professor Broom. „Dad, wir müssen reden!…“ lallte er vor sich hin. „Nicht jetzt, Hellboy! Geh zurück auf dein Zimmer und schlaf´ erst mal deinen Rausch aus! Ich habe gerade Wichtiges zu tun,“ meinte er sichtlich genervt und blickte zu dir. Erst jetzt fielst du dem Dämon auf. Teils verschreckt und teils ungläubig starrtest du ihn an. Vor Schreck vor dem lauten Eintrudeln Hellboys warst du von dem Stuhl aufgesprungen und standest nun. Du fühltest dich ihm gegenüber trotzdem ziemlich winzig. Er musterte dich kurz so unverblümt wie du Daimio gemustert hattest. Ein breites Grinsen legte sich auf seinen Lippen und in seinen Augen funkelten etwas seltsam. „Uh... Hallo, wen haben wir denn hier? Als Gott dich schuf, wollte er sicher angeben.“ Es dauerte ein paar Sekunden bis du verstanden hattest was genau da gerade vorging. Da war gerade ein echter Dämon in den Raum gestürmt. Dieser war allen Anscheins ziemlich betrunken. Und zu allem Überfluss flirtete er nun auch noch mit dir. Die Absurdität dieser Situation und der Anmachspruch ließen dich in schallendes Gelächter ausbrechen. Jegliche Angst vor dem Wesen vor dir war mit einem Schlag verschwunden. Mit sich selbst zufrieden grinste Hellboy Daimio an. Dieser schien so gar nicht begeistert zu sein von seinem Auftreten. „Siehst du, Tiger. So bricht man das Eis. Also wenn man schon nicht so heiß ist es zu schmelzen,“ spöttelte er und warf dir einen flirtenden Blick zu. „Das gilt natürlich nicht für dich, mein Engel…“ Das war zu viel des Guten für Agent Daimio. Bedrohlich funkelte er den Dämon an. „Das reicht! Raus hier, sonst…!“ „Sonst was, Kitkat? Zeigst du mir deine Krallen?…“ Professor Broom seufzte und sah erwartungsvoll in deine Richtung. »Na, schön«, dachtest du dir und schrittest ein. Du stelltest dich zwischen die beiden Streitenden und legtest erneut eine Hand auf die Brust des Dämons. „Nana! Wir wollen doch nicht gleich einen Streit anfangen, Gentlemen. Wir sind doch alle erwachsene Menschen…“ sagtest du beschwichtigend. Dann schautest du Hellboy tief in die Augen und strichst ihn sanft über die Wange. „… Du wirst müde. Geh´ und ruh´ dich aus!“ Währenddessen achtetest du auf jede noch so kleine Reaktion von ihm. Und es funktionierte. Er drehte sich um, sagte er wäre müde, läge sich nun schlafen und zog ohne weiteres Tohuwabohu von dannen.

Abe with a witch s/o?

Abe Saipen X Witch Reader Headcannons 10 count

Absolutely stunned to have a witch on the bprd team. Hellboy has had a few run ins with witches so you really had to prove yourself a good witch. Abe took you in immediately.

He tries to learn everything he can through his mind reading thing but fails to do so. You're able to detect this and make him unable to read anything of you. This made him completely reliant on talking to you to find things about you.

You took interest to him very quickly and he took interest into you aswell. No one was surprised when you two became too cuddly and started dating. Which made you let your guard down with him a lot more.

He likes when you use your power around the BPRD like for unlocking jammed doors or making a portal to another room. Just like any other species you have a history and library of spell books and history of your ancestors galore. He also learned that mostly all witches are related to you. Even baba yaga...

It takes a witch a long time to learn all the spells but they do tend to specialize in certain crafts which makes Abe confused. Everything he's ever know about witches is turned on its head.

One most utilized spell is a water spell that puts a water bubble around Abe so he can breath. This also allows you two to go out more and enjoy dates outside. While on these dates he helps you find herbs for the potions you make.

On the flip side you can create an air bubble for when you swim with him on missions in case he needs extra help. If it's not on missions allows you to sneak him to the nearest lake and skinny dip here and there.

Abe picked up a new hobby of helping you make potions. He learned about you a little more while you two were able to just be together. You were always so busy making stuff but made time for Abe any chance you got.

He doesn't like the whole creepy crawlies spells you do or dealing with anything dead. You gotta do a few of those every now and then but he would not be subbing for events like that. You make sure to console him after you get finished because it takes awhile and he misses you.

You two are complete opposites but somehow have a mutual relationship with each other. Dating or not you two tend to rely on each other for support during missions or just in general.

Prompt: Hi my name is Annie and I like suffering! Just kidding, there wasn’t really a prompt for this one other then the fact that I’m an angst whore and I made the mistake of listening to the song “I Have Faith In You--Goodbyes” from the X-Men Days of Future Past soundtrack while I typed.

 So here’s this! 

{I made the stuff in italics a flashback so don’t get all mixed up on me. Enjoy the pain! And I’m sorry again!} 

The “crack” that filled the air was sickening. Time seemed to slow to a complete stop as every agent of the BPRD present turned to face one of their own.The snarling and gnashing of teeth continued as men and women with guns drawn fought back a slew of demons that had poured out of a small gate to hell, opened by two dumb teen witches in way over their heads. Alice turned, her face drained of all blood, and watched as a demon howled over a body before attacking the bleeding corpse.

Y/n.

The sound of raging flames and rushing wind carried Hellboy’s name to his waiting ears as he turned his sweat drenched face in the direction of the shout. His yellow eyes scanned the gory battlefield deep under a ridged brow; something was missing. Bullets filled with holy water and melted holy candle wax were fired in iron casings that littered the air as both demon and agents dropped like the ashes that fell all around them in the breeze. Hellboy watched as Alice screamed in a fit of rage at a lengthy grey demon drenched in blood. Bright flashing blasts left Alice’s gun every few seconds as the body of her victim writhed and convulsed from the onslaught of bullets.

That was when he took full notice of the blood. He followed the trail down the demons body to the now mangled human form at its feet. Before he even knew who the body was he felt an empty feeling rise in his broad chest. It was like a piece of his being had just been ripped away. He almost expected to find A bleeding gaping hole in his own body, but as he turned to fire yet another bullet, he found no wound in the place the pain resided.

  “Alice! You’ve got no cover!” He shouted, spit flying from his mouth. He watched as the girl threw a punch at an oncoming attacker.

  “Neither does she!” Was her only response as she dropped to her knees and slid through the mud and blood. Hellboy racked his mind, the word “she” flashing his brain like a wave of lights. He found himself turning round and round emits the fighting looking for one face. One stupid face. A face that would most likely be grinning in the middle of all this violence.

  “Y/N?!” The stronger of sound of his voice was all but gone as the girls named ripped through his throat like a knife through flesh.

  “Y/N?!”

“Lemme touch it.” The girl spoke as she reached out across the couch, Hellboy laughed a bit at her posing of the statement, but gladly dropped his large stone hand in her lap.

  “Smashing crap is easy enough, but jerking off is a nightmare.” Y/n laughed at his comment for a moment before opening his hand flat against her own.

  “What do you think it was designed for?” She asked, marveling at the difference in size their hands. Red shrugged,

 “Don’t know, don’t care.” He huffed, looking away from her, his body language now stiff. She noticed the change in his posture and leaned back into his couch.

 “Either way, it's pretty cool.”She stated pushing his arm back towards him. He lifted his hand and tilted his head to the side slightly, clenching it into a fist.

  “Yeah. I guess so…”

  “Well,” Y/n began sitting up from the couch and stretching a bit. “ Not that I haven't enjoyed our little therapy session thoroughly, but I should probably turn in. You know before Johann rats me out to your dad.” Hellboy chuckled,

  “Gas bag can deal with me.”

Y/n Smiled at him. A real genuine smile. He watched her eyes intently and saw the heart behind them. The heart that was able to look past his face and see him for who he really was. His mouth went dry as she walked towards him, slightly towering over his now seated form, and placed a soft hand on his shoulder. He looked from her hand to her face and let out a small breath as she leaned down and pressed her lips to the space right above his shaved horns. He relished in the feeling of tenderness he so desperately craved and allowed his eyes to drift shut. He sighed sadly as she pulled back and patted the side of his face;  his hair and beard tingling in her fingers.

  “Night beefcake.”  she spoke softly before grabbing her boots off the floor and heading for the door.

  “Night L/n.”  without another word she closed the door and vanished from his sight.

  “I love you…”

Hellboy’s eyes flocked to Alice as she held the mangled body in her arms.

  “Not the face. Not the face. Please not the face.” Was all that crossed his mind as the woman in Alice's arms fell to the side. His heart sunk as those e/c eyes looked lifelessly past him and into some distant Horizon. Red begin to run as Alice threw her hands over her ears with a shout. In an instant Hellboy was at her side, taking Y/n and into his own arms and checking on Alice. “Alice sweetie-- oh god-- b-breathe.” His hands grew a darker red as blood poured out of Y/n’s body. Tears stung his eyes as the teen beside him cried out.

  “Too many. Can’t tell if she’s one of them.” Pain was evident in her voice as she clawed at her ears. Hellboy turned back to the girl in his arms.

  “Hey! Hey!” He began wiping dirt and blood from her cold skin.  “Stay with us Y/n! Don't you fucking dare! You hear me?! Don’t you dare!” He held her face in his hands and shook her vigorously. Alice drew her gun shakily and began firing at the approaching demons from every angle.

 “HB!” She croaked, one hand on her weapon the other over her ear. “There’s no point doing this out here! There’s too many! We’re going to die if we don’t fight back!” She watched as her best friend became more and more frantic with his movements.

 “She’s not dead! I’m not leaving her!” His voice was raw and shaky as he kept his eyes trained on the slight rise and fall of her chest.

  “B-beefcake… is that you?”

Hellboy froze as he heard her voice fill his ears. Tears flowed freely now as he cupped her face in his flesh hand.

 “Hey baby girl. Hey, hey, I’m here. It’s o- it’s alright. Just keep those gorgeous eyes open and we’ll be in business, okay?” He forced a smile and sobbed slightly through it as he dared look up at the deteriorating situation around him. He then looked back down at Y/n when he felt her hand on his chest.

  All sound faded away as she looked up at him through half ladien eyes. He could feel her slipping from him and he hated it more than anything.

  “We… we had one hell of a run, huh?” She asked, blood trickling down her chin like there was a crack in her smile. Hellboy pursed his lips in anger as he rocked her a bit in his arms.

 “No, no, no. None of this “end of my time” speech bullshit. You’re gonna hold on and we’re gonna get you help. So shut up for once and let me get you out of here.”

  “I can’t even die without you coaching me through it.” She laughed in a sputter of blood. He winced at the sound and used his coat sleeve to wipe the red from her face.

 “I can’t lose you.” He spoke shaking his head ever so slightly. “I just got you. I’m not letting you go.” Y/n smiled up at him and placed a hand on his cheek.

 “I’m not going anywhere. Not until you understand how much I fucking love you.” The red giant was taken aback by her words, but felt them race through him like a shot of whisky. They filled every inch of his body and set his skin ablaze. His hand squeezed her face.

 “I know… Cuz’ I love you just as much dumbass.” He took a sharp breath in and suddenly became aware of the gunfire surrounding him.

  “HELLBOY!” Alice was screaming now as the demons began to over power her.

  “Don’t you dare move. Give me one second beautiful.” He removed his coat from his shoulders and placed it atop Y/n’s form. She smiled drowsily at him as blood began to seep through the thick fabric in a array of dots.

  “Thanks Red.”

 He drew his own gun and stood for a moment as Alice took cover at his feet. With a scream that could shake the earth, he openfired on the group of demons and mowed them down like they were nothing. After what felt like an eternity of fighting, the demons stopped and the guns were silenced. Agents began limping from all around to the spot which Hellboy stood, their bodies broken down from the hours of fighting. Red nodded at a few ensuring their safety before Alice’s voice broke the silence.

 “HB….” Hellboy looked to the girl on the ground and felt his soul break. Y/n lay cold and still in the teens arms; the blood flow stopped and her eyes shut tight.

“I don’t know what it is about these mountains.” Y/n began as she rubbed her arms in an attempt to banish the cold, “But they take my breath away every time I see them.” Hellboy smiled softly to himself and walked up behind her, removing the trench coat from around his shoulders.

   “It’s got to be the only good thing about having the base in Colorado.” He hummed, his breath fogging up before his face and dissipating in the crisp dusk air. Y/n looked to him as he reached around her and placed his coat around her human frame. She gripped at the fabric with a small smile as snowflakes began to stick to the brown color in a array of dots.

  “Thanks Red….”

Argumentative Essay Sample

One of the services I offer is the critique and review of essays, as well as custom examples for students to use as references when constructing their own works. 

The argumentative essay is often one of the most challenging to write, as it must be presented with multiple sides of an issue, but a clear opinion on the part of the author that can be argued by others. Even finding an appropriate topic can be difficult, as the writer must immerse themselves in the issue to understand multiple viewpoints involved, state through the writing their stance (or just the stance they are choosing to present) on the topic, and attempt to sway the opinions of the readers. It should also be tailored to the audience, be it the teacher, classmates, or a larger group, so anticipating the viewpoints of the audience is crucial. 

The essay beneath the cut is just shy of 2500 words, and could be trimmed or expanded to fit an assignment if it was needed. It lacks any source citations or footnotes, though those could be provided in whatever format an assignment required.

The topic for this sample argumentative essay is the current controversy over Marvel’s upcoming story-arc, Secret Empire, and how Magneto, a canonically Jewish character, could potentially ally with Hydra, an organization that once had strong Nazi ties.

Magneto And Hydra;  Attract Or Repel?

If you're a nerd and not living under a rock that the Mars Rover is about to inspect, you've borne witness to the chaos swirling around Marvel's Secret Empire. Or at least the part that is spreading through the internet like secrets through the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Thanks to how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken stories once only found in comics and stray movies and spread them out for a far wider audience, many people are weighing in heavily on the matter of Magneto vs. Hydra. There is outrage aplenty that a canonically Jewish character who survived the Holocaust would ever join an organization as heavily associated with Nazis as Hydra, but as John Meyers said regarding Hellboy, it is not the origins of a man that defines him, but the choices he makes along the way.

Before we examine the character of Magneto as he's developed over the years as well as Hydra, the fascist organization that has allied with the Nazis during WWII and has been seen as an allegory for the Nazis since, it is important to note why this is a sensitive issue for a significant number of people. The current political climate in the US appears to be encouraging a rise in hate crimes; while these bigots have always been among us, believing themselves superior, now they have become more brazen. Bomb threats have been called in to many Jewish Community Centers and Muslim Mosques, and cemeteries have been vandalized; swastikas are appearing in far greater numbers than any time in recent memory. Marvel has already taken a beloved hero, Captain America, and through the use of a Cosmic Cube plot-line, has turned him into an agent of Hydra, which generated intense outrage. Now, there are strong implications that a canonically Jewish character will be a turncoat as well. Readers --or even just people who have enjoyed the movies-- may feel as though their heroes are being taken away from them in a darkening time, to join The Enemy. In all likelihood, this is intentional; comic books have long been known for touching on real-world issues, and these particular story arcs are taking both heroes and villains into a grim and uncertain new reality.

It should also be noted that this controversy is in response to a Marvel variant cover, which don't often have much, if anything,  to do with the story; various other heroes like Hulk, Thor, and Captain Marvel are depicted as secret Hydra agents as well, and even a poster for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. displays a looming threat of Hydra. Nothing on the variant covers hint at what the story arc of Secret Empire will involve, besides a likely conflict between the heroes and villains of several Marvel groups and Cosmic Cubed Captain America.

Magneto is a very well-known super villain of Marvel even to those who have never touched a comic book. He's played big parts in anything related to X-Men, which means significant appearances in cartoons and movies over decades, but many of those depictions focus on Magneto rather than Max Eisenhardt, who after enough name changes to confuse even a comic book writer a little, including Erik Lehnsherr, became Magneto. How does one go about creating such a charismatic super villain? Well, judging by his background, apparently one shoves the character through at least three levels of hell from childhood, makes sure they are repeatedly betrayed and lose multiple loved ones, and makes certain they slaughter a large number of people in a rage that also forces them to lose a loved one. While different variations of the story exist due to the complexities of translating comics to TV shows to movies, the basics of this Intro To Super Villainy are as follows: Through the 1930s and into the 1940s, young Max Eisenhardt suffered the loss of mother, father, and sister by execution, after which he escaped a mass grave. He was captured again and sent to Auschwitz, the horrors of which could have their own essay. While there, he found a "bright side", reuniting with Magda, a Romani girl he'd fallen in love with. They escaped the prison camp and lived an uneventful life until a manifestation of his powers drove an angry mob to attack, burning down their home and killing his daughter. Magneto, or Magnus, as he was calling himself at the time, retaliated by destroying everyone he could get his magnets on. Magda, terrified by the display of power and violence, fled, and would later give birth to Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.

Looking at what this character went through in his formative years thanks to the Nazis, it's incredibly difficult for many to accept that he would align his interests with Hydra. These are events that can shape a man in many different ways. Stan Lee, the creator of Magneto, said in a 2008 interview that he didn't think of Magneto as a bad guy. He was dangerous, he was driven, but not a villain. This is particularly interesting, and a display of the concept: Villains are the heroes of their own stories. From the outside, it is clear that Magneto is absolutely a villain, but from the perspective of the character, he is doing whatever it takes to protect mutant-kind, "Homo superior" from the horrific results of bigotry and fear combining. Even as Magneto wanders off and makes an orbital base in a hollowed out asteroid and gathers a bunch of pissed-off mutants to form the "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants", --seriously, there was no name creativity happening here-- which is probably one of the most super villainy things one can possibly do, his goal is to protect the mutants from the rest of mankind. In his own narrative, and in Stan Lee's mind, he's not the "bad guy"; he's simply willing to do whatever it takes to keep what happened during the Holocaust to the Jews from happening to the mutants.

Magneto goes through a great number of character development arcs, as do most long-term characters that exist in comic books that span decade after decade. Some to the point of becoming utterly nonsensical when looked at with hindsight. At one point, it is discovered that the use of his mutant powers has made him extremely paranoid and aggressive, traits which show during several attempts to conquer or destroy humanity. At another point, Magneto is inwardly horrified that he's become a supremacist himself; in an encounter with the X-Men he nearly kills Kitty Pryde, stopping himself barely in time when he realizes that she's just a child. He also realizes that he's started to view those who oppose him to be as worthless as the Nazis considered his people to be. One of the most unique story arcs he was involved in was called Secret Wars, in which an alien being took heroes and villains to pit against each other so he could view the concept of "good vs. evil" in action. Significantly, it sorted Magneto in with the heroes, because regardless of his methods, his desires were based on a wish to help mutant-kind rather than the more selfish motivations we often see in villains.

Some of these arcs are off-set by others that show just how far he is willing to go with regard to helping mutant-kind; kidnapping, torture, and aiming stolen nuclear warheads at Earth from an asteroid-base are all fine examples of this. He is perfectly willing, at numerous points, to slaughter as much of humanity as his paranoia insists is necessary to preserve mutants, even if he has to kill other mutants to do it. Marvel also repeatedly created spin-off universes, such as the House of M, in which Scarlet Witch warps reality so that those in her family can receive their heart's desires. It says a good deal about the character Magneto that this arc involves him as the leader of the world's much larger mutant population, using Genosha as a base for dominating the rest of the world and placing mutantkind above humanity.

Now we take a look at Hydra. In many instances, members of Hydra can be easily identified by a habit of wearing green with a serpent motif which has probably led to Slytherin / Hydra cross-over fan-fiction somewhere on the internet. Marvel has tried quite a bit, especially in recent times, to distance Hydra from real-world Nazis, though many fans can't --or won't-- see a distinction. The wider fan-based reached by the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen Hydra in association with Nazis repeatedly, while the comic book canon shows a far more diverse cast for the history of Hydra, which spans back to dynastic Egypt. Red Skull is the villain that many see as the head of Hydra, forgetting that the hydra has many heads; cut off one and two more will grow.

Red Skull is significant because unlike the overwhelming majority of Hydra, he really is a Nazi. Red Skull first appeared in 1941 as a Nazi agent and enemy of Captain America and of the free world in general. What might surprise people is that he has had several incarnations, including having his mind placed into a clone of Steve Rogers. Time and again, the world believes he has gone, only to have him return time and again with schemes of world domination and genocide. People focusing on the allegory of Hydra as Nazis because of Red Skull's association with both miss that Red Skull himself is an allegory of how some enemies will never be truly gone. The ideals he espouses of fascism, bigotry, rule-by-intimidation, and superiority are problems that the real world sees time and again, in many different forms. In a way, he is Captain America's opposite; trained by Hitler himself and appointed head of terrorist activities, given a grotesque mask of a red skull to strike fearful obedience in others while Captain America's costume and shield have stood for hope, uniting against an enemy of the free people, leading others through inspiration. It was Red Skull who took over the reins of Hydra during World War II, thus giving Hydra an association with Nazis that Marvel has been trying, with little success, to break away from.

So why would Magneto join forces with Hydra? We have no real way to know even that he is going to, much less the reasons that will be provided in the upcoming story arc. Art and teasers that Marvel has made available strongly suggest that many groups from the Cinematic Universe, including the X-Men, the Avengers, and even the Guardians of the Galaxy will be swept up in this year-long story, Secret Empire.

People look at one facet of Magneto, the fact that Max Eisenhardt is a Jew. Not just a Jew, but one who survived the horrors of the concentration camps and lost his family in the process. And from that viewpoint, it does seem appalling that he would join with Hydra. While it now lacks any true Nazi ties, the fascist organization has its tentacles squeezing tight on the Marvel universe, subverting Captain America to their side while utilizing S.H.I.E.L.D. as an intelligence gathering unit, surely with intent to (as all villainous organizations wish) take over the world.

But Magneto is not only a Jew. The character has made a number of choices in his life, choices that have led down paths of possible redemption and paths that would make most other super villains anxious and wary of hostile take-over. What he experienced as a young Jew during the Holocaust has led him to desire, beyond all else, protection of mutantkind. He even qualifies as a supremacist himself, over and over, to the point that he'd be willing to eradicate the rest of humanity so that mutants can ascend to their rightful place, believing that they are far superior. A place above a humanity that is so often cruel to the unknown, that lets fear of the things they do not understand lead to war and tragedy over and over. From that perspective, perhaps we can see why he might throw himself in with Hydra, even with the organization's history.

Magneto is not only a mutant with incredibly dangerous and extremely powerful abilities, he is also a brilliant tactician (various asteroid-base debacles aside.) He is cunning, and ruthless, and if he saw a way to utilize Hydra in his ever-present goal of protecting and uplifting mutantkind, he would very likely take it. It is also possible that he would make use of his intelligence and wit to infiltrate the organization with the thought of causing it to topple from within; he is often depicted as a patient man willing to go to great lengths, even ones he may question himself, in order to achieve his goals. To us, the readers, that makes him not just a super villain, but one that can have a certain amount of admiration. Unlike many comic characters, his origins and his experiences have combined to make a fairly steady character in a genre that often sends characters through roller-coaster loops that baffle the laws of physics; no matter what Magneto does, always in the back of his mind is the goal of keeping what happened to his people, the Jews, from happening to his people, the mutants.

Right now, in the real world, minorities are feeling not just oppressed, but scared. Sacred spaces of many cultures are being violated in the name of bigotry or "progress", to the point that it's become difficult to tell the difference between the two anymore. The behavior of US officials has been dismissive over these frequent horrors, sweeping them under the rug, only adding to the hurt and anxiety that many people all over the world are feeling. And while many of us look toward fiction to lift us up, hints and theories suggest that Marvel's Secret Empire will lead our heroes into darkness. Looking at the US today, Captain America being subverted by propaganda and putting Hydra on display as American military is terrifyingly on the nose; those who see Hydra as allegory for Nazis may now see Hydra as allegory for America, and that is a horrifying thought. But comics have often reflected the real world quite intentionally, and perhaps the choices Magneto will make, the way he decides to end things within the story-arc of Secret Empire, will reveal a man we can admire as a hero.

Cupid’s Arrows follows Rick and Lora, a team of Arrows who work for Cupid, the god of love, and attempt to execute the wishes of The Book of Love, which gives the details on which couples will get together for a legendary love story. They’ve received their newest mission and must work together to bring about the perfect and memorable moment, assuring a lasting start to their couple’s relationship.  However, even after working together for hundreds of years, they banter and bicker like brother and sister to cover the feelings they have for each other–will these Arrows finally realize they are more than just friends? 

Nothing Special Season 2 by Katie Cook

In Nothing Special, spirits, gods, and demons wander both their realm and ours. The series follows Callie, a lonely teen who grew up splitting her time between the human and spirit worlds due to her father’s job as an antiques collector in the spirit world. When her father mysteriously vanishes in the spirit realm, Callie is forced to journey further into the world than ever before in an attempt to rescue him. In Season 2, readers can continue to explore Callie’s world filled with adventure, family secrets, and romance.

Heart Wired by Leanne Hannah (Masters of the Universe) and Rod Hannah – launching this summer.

Heart Wired follows 16-year-old Cal Mills, one of the first of seven children born on Mars. Cal has always dreamed of traveling to Earth and experiencing the birthplace of humanity firsthand. However, he is held back by his fragile body, genetically-engineered to tolerate the microgravity environment of Mars. His parents have religious and philosophical issues with the trans-humanist movement, which pushes for total replacement of the organic biological systems of the human body with the synthetic machine. Things change when communication with Earth gets cut off suddenly and it becomes clear that a war of annihilation has taken place. The final act of the automated space-based military forces will be to eliminate all rival extraterrestrial assets.

Metaphorical Her by James Maddox, David Stoll, and Justin Birch – launching this summer.

Humiliated and exiled, a young poet and her friends build an underground following while fighting against the white-collar criminals who threaten their careers. In Metaphorical Her, Eleanor “Laney” Petra makes a social misstep and offends the man who holds the keys to success in her chosen field of work, poetry. Discovering an unlikely audience in the local rock scene, Laney shows that she can build a sizable following of outsiders that will force the poetic scene to recognize her and her work. All the while, Laney must fend off the people who want to cage her, her friends, and hinder their ambition.

Gerard Way’s ‘Doom Patrol’ Comic Continues to Amaze

Each week, The Creators Project seeks out the best and brightest from the comics industry.

Kelly Thompson is the writer of an astonishing four comics currently on shelves: Jem and the Holograms, The Misfits, Mega Princess, and Hawkeye for Marvel. This week, she speaks to The Creators Project about some of her favorite new comics and what she thinks of the industry as a whole. “I buy far more books every week than I can possibly stay on top of,” Thompson explains, “so I am always falling behind. As much as reading comics inspires me and is important to creating great comics, there's also some truth that if I'm busy reading comics I'm not busy enough writing them. It's a tough balance!” She’s particularly excited for “the re-publishing of the book Loose Ends #1 by Jason Latour, Chris Brunner, and Rico Renzi... I also bought and read Saga #42, which is remains one of the most amazing books around. The consistency in the storytelling, the emotional investment it’s managed, not to mention the insanely creative world building is second to none. Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughan are the ultimate dream team. Wonder Woman #15. I haven't actually read it yet this week, but it's top of my pile when I get back to my ‘stack.’”

When asked about the state of current comics, Kelly Thompson says she’s conflicted. “On the one hand I think there are more great, interesting, smart, and innovative books out there than ever before,” says Thompson. “We've got an absolute embarrassment of riches, especially on the creator-owned front. On the other hand, apparently you maybe can have too much of a good thing? I think market saturation is making it harder than ever for some of those great books—creator owned and licensed —to be sustainable. The comic market remains a pretty niche industry and X number of people only have X number of dollars to spend and when there's so much out there, something’s got to give. Which makes it more important than ever to work toward expanding the industry and diversifying. Change is painful but it's vital in order to have growth.”

Reviewed this week: the impeccable Doom Patrol, a fast and fun G. I. Joe comic, beautiful manga artwork, and snow-covered Hellboy.

Doom Patrol #4

The wonderfully strange comic reboot about misfit heroes on the periphery of the DC Universe returns with issue #4, written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Nick Derington. This issue focuses on an interstellar jailbreak, the surprise loss of a limb, and a convention of negative spirits. Way continues to tell a pleasantly complex story, and Nick Derington’s artwork has reached its apex in this issue. His linework, panel layout and composition, and effortless style (matched with Tamra Bonvillain’s colors) are some of the best in the business right now, and couldn't have found a better fit than Doom Patrol. As a bonus, this issue features a few extra pages of illustrations by pop culture artist Brandon Bird (of the Jerry Orbach Memorial Art Car fame) entitled “Bane’s Coloring Corner.” The pages feature coloring book-style illustrations of Bane giving life affirming lessons to the reader/colorer. It’s a perfect ending to one of the best comics of the month, and an absolute must-read.

G.I. Joe #2

Written by Aubrey Sitterson (who spoke with us about his favorite new comics a few weeks back) and illustrated by Giannis Milonogiannis, the new G.I. Joe series for IDW is pure nostalgia and playfulness. Sitterson writes his Joes with big, bold personalities, and Milonogiannis draws them in a way so action-oriented they may as well have 16 points of articulation. This issue sees the team splitting up between an evil biker gang in Mongolia and a group of anarchists using dangerous symbology in Athens, Greece. There isn’t much angst, and this isn’t a “darker take” on G.I. Joe. Instead, it’s all action, all intrigue, and will absolutely scratch that Saturday morning cartoon itch.

Manga of the Week: Persona Q Shadow of the Labyrinth Side: P4 #23

Persona Q Shadow of the Labyrinth Side: P4 #23 is the latest chapter in a manga based on the Persona series of role-playing video games. The story of Persona Q Shadow of the Labyrinth, essentially, follows groups of characters from various Persona games as they’re trapped in a maze full of monsters. This issue sees them battling against a giant clock-monster, and even though the plot could be plenty confusing for the uninitiated, the artwork is perfect for the genre. It’s fast-paced, frenetic, and completely captures a nice video game aesthetic. If the story sounds interesting, readers should go and read back volumes. But if there are readers out there who want to soak in some incredible action illustration, this issue #23 is highly recommended.

Hellboy Winter Special 2017

This year’s Hellboy Winter Special features three short tales all set at varying times in the Hellboy universe. The first takes place in 1891 and concerns a freak snowstorm and the odd artifact that may have caused it; the second takes place in the 1960s and features a possessed Santa Claus; and the third is set in 1979 and features a chilling witch story. All three, though short, are perfect little tales, tightly-wound and clicking along like clockwork. The artists for each perfectly match the story and writing style, and the end result is a comic that offers up tons of fan service to die-hards, and is still a blast to read for newcomers.
