AITA for trying to argue for a better deal?

So a little bit ago, me (19M) and my friends (13M, 17M, 18M, 20M, and 21M) went into this small blacksmiths shop. We needed some of our items repaired and to get a new sword for one of us since his last one broke (again). A few names for you 13M Blue Shirt, 17M Menace, 20M Wolf boy, and 21M Scarfy. 18M, or Cape I guess never really did anything.

While there, this kid was the one at the counter and said he was the only Smith on hand at that moment. (Which he had to be like, 16 at most, if not younger due to how short he is.) I'll keep calling him Smith for now. After he gave the whole thing about how much his Weapon repair rate was (Like 50 bucks each plus extra if something was enchanted, not too bad a deal, a bit on the pricey end, but granted this place was pretty fair from home so they did have different rates for things), Scarfy asked about his rates for commissioning a sword. I shut that down real fast. I've worked in a forge before, so I knew it was going to take too long, and be way too expensive. Besides, there were some pretty decent blades on display anyhow.

During that time, Blue Shirt kept having sticky fingers and trying to nab some of the daggers that were also in display while me and Scarfy were talking to Smith. Smith kept catching the kid somehow though, and Wolf Boy took him and Menace outside to wait for us.

We eventually settled on a sword and took it up to buy it, and Smith full on said it was like, 500 bucks! 500 bucks! Like yea it's a pretty good sword, but it shouldn't have been more than 300 bucks! I pointed this out, because I wasn't falling for this clear rip off, and Smith said that at 300 it wouldn't even cover the cost to buy the materials that went into it??? Where the HELL is this guy getting them? Or where are his parents or the actual owner of this place was getting them??? The main metal of this sword was one of the cheapest of the good stuff you could get!

We never even got the stupid thing because Wolf Boy dragged Blue Shirt back instead because it turns out the kid did manage to pocket a knife, and for the few minutes Menace was left unsupervised, he managed to sneak into the workshop and knock over a vat of oil.

Smith kicked us all out, though Scarfy stayed a little bit long because he offered to pay for the damage Menace did. (Which was still way too much than those damages would have actually been worth)

My friends are now acting like I'm the one that got us kicked out in the end when all I did was call him out on his high prices! Menace was the one that caused actual damage!

5. Art, and more still - marketing!

While hot off the heels of describing cars as items with personality, there’s another perspective the matter can be approached with: art. Usually that’s a word we like to use for something inherently imbued with culture and ideas and beliefs and statements and the lot, right? I mean, my country officially recognized a car as such.

And right now, if I were a hack, I would make my case by showing you the Art Cars -a BMW project that involved getting their cars painted up by artists- unaware not just that they only prove cars can be canvases but that using them as evidence implicitly paints the world of art as a separate entity holding claim to the term and making it only ever accessible through association with it.

But I'm not a hack. So I'll only show them because they're a vaguely related cool car thing I want to brag about having seen and I show those by default.

Actually, no, too many of them are too good to ignore, I need to make a separate post about them altogether. But while we're here, let it be known that this is not a thing isolated to BMW: here's a Porsche Vision Gran Turismo (which proofreading friend of the blog @ldub0775 is not that wrong in suggesting I should make a post about) handpainted by one Vexx...

I mean, look at all those details. Look at all those decisions, made in sketching, carried to production, and then highlighted again with this example's art. Look at all that non-functional work. Those surfaces on the bumper can't possibly be needed for packaging. Those lines on the hood can't possibly be something airflow cares about. Those cuts on the taillights can't possibly do anything but make the thing more complicated and expensive. And really, we've gone over this, designs change even within the same car just for the sake of making it look different. How is this not human creativity being put at the service of imbuing something with some idea of beauty / emotion / meaning / message? And how can that possibly not count as art by any definition that isn't self-impressed gatekeeping?

But there's more to car design than even that, because where art is just distilled statements, car design is also what some argue you can't have in "real, pure art": marketing. Because cars market themselves, through enticing with their shapes and feels and sounds (just like people!) and channel that into marketing the brand through their badging - which can range from almost foregoing it in off-brand experiments like the aforementioned Pike Cars, in which Nissan badging was literally millimetric, to things like the Italo-Chinese DR1's endearingly embarrassing Ambassador package, which got you a discount in exchange for making your car a drivable billboard.

Hell, sometimes, in the case of 'halo cars', marketing can even be the only reason a car even exists! For example:

The LFA was a $375,000 car Lexus sold 500 of - and it cost so much to develop that the brand still lost millions on the whole affair. Or rather, spent millions making little kids all over stop thinking of Lexus as "the brand grandpa endangers road users in", and start thinking of it as "the brand capable of showing Ferrari how it's done". This car's styling, its bespoke V10 engine and the consequent performance figures, its gorgeous interior, they obviously were means to market itself, but marketing itself was itself a means of marketing the cars Lexus actually makes money on.

I think you knew, upon asking this, that I could only ever have answered with either an ironic one-liner or a dozen-part novel. And unfortunately, this is already the second line, so novel it is. So then, without any further ado than the literal half year that’s gone by since this was asked, let's go.

1. Engineering matters

At the end of last year (aka when I started writing this, yikes) my dear old iPhone 6S moved on to a new home because it simply wasn't keeping up with me anymore. (And again, I was using an iPhone 6S in 2023. If I say a phone is too slow, it's too slow.) I had plenty of criteria for the replacement: a smallish screen not overboard on resolution, ideally a physical media control button and/or vibration toggle, repairability, a FUCKING AUX JACK... Something like the Sony Xperia 10, whose only real issue is marketing so trash you've only just now learned Sony never stopped making phones.

And yet...

This fancy wallpapers-sporting foldable is a Motorola RAZR 5G, a phone whose too-big screen already broke (though at the edge due to adhesive issues) and those who dared try warn repairing it will be as hard as phone repairs get. Why the fuck did I buy this? Well, because it has something more important than the aux jack, proper sizing, and good cameras: it made me go “That’s so cool!”, and when’s the last time a phone made you say that? It's the cusp of a new technology, and whether it becomes the future of phones, a future of phones, or just a weird footnote, it is an island of interesting in a sea of boring. And sadly, even this island is rapidly sinking. The drive for new form factors has already boiled down to the same two phones and their evolution is sinking into the usual millimetric proportion tweaking, camera rearranging, touchscreen expanding, case material switching, fingerprint sensor moving, and spec improvements not even manufacturers can come up with use cases for. I mean, seriously, how does the iPhone 15 differ from a software-updated iPhone X (which is apparently not pronounced "x", so I guess the iPhone Twitter)? Nothing is new. Nothing is tackled differently. The user experience does not differ. And why should it, when iPhone users will get a new one out of habit anyway and many are so tech illiterate moving a button could hospitalize them? Five generation newer and 150% faster are numbers you basically have to trust, because they don't make a difference that matters.

But in cars? 150% faster will matter alright. Even just looking at it. Cars are a visceral experience to even witness, let alone ride in or drive, and the frantic engineering pursuits for performance and overall capability actually have impactful real world implications beyond "some pockets will bulge 1mm less". And their engineering involves so many fields that there’s always a breakthrough going on somewhere - which leads to another reason their engineering is so interesting: there’s simply so much of it that anyone interested in engineering will find something for them, no matter their level or sector of expertise! Interested in mechanics? Well, obviously you’ll have a field day! Aerodynamics? Don't even get me started! Electronics? You're getting more goods by the year! It spread from engine management to safety assists to infotainment to ergonomic adjustments to even suspension and aerodynamics! Sound design? Even just working on the way engines sound is a profession of its own, let alone making these barrels of metal and glass propelling themselves at triple digit speeds through hundreds of explosions a second things you can comfortably have a conversation in - and that's not even mentioning horns and chimes! Hi-Fi? We’ve spent most of a century trying to get concert hall sound from a tiny tin can where everyone sits off-center and everything bumps and shakes around and you have maybe room for two components* a third the normal size and speakers can only be in a handful of places you wouldn’t want them which may well be the next room over**!

And this is just engineering.

y’know i love memes as much as anyone else on this hellsite and the internet in general. but one meme i can’t stand now, as well as a joke used by older comedians about ~kids today!!!! am i right???~ that i can’t stand now, is the one that’s like “all 10 year olds want today is an iphone or an ipad or a macbook for their birthday or christmas! all i got for my 10th birthday/christmas as a kid was a tennis racquet and a tether ball that hit me in the face! kids are so spoilt today! you better get an i-job to i-pay for your spoilt mac-ass!”

because like.... do you not understand that in today’s increasingly over-connected world, ipads and macbooks or other tablets/laptops are pretty much required school equipment now, if your 10yo kid’s primary/elementary etc school has a ~bring your own device~ policy for kids in years 4-6??? like obviously yes, some schools will provide students with laptop/tablet trolleys and stuff.... or also the government might have a program to roll out laptops/tablets to schools (like australia did under rudd and gillard).... that some schools will literally put “parents must get a reliable tablet computer or laptop computer for their child to use for assignments”. when it comes to high school, i imagine that they’ll need their own laptop/tablet the whole way through their time there, if there is no longer any school provided or limited school provided laptops/desktop computers/tablets.

that’s besides the point that laptops etc are even more so required now than ever before, after everyone was forced to do homeschooling because of covid??? so. practically. a kid asking for a macbook/ipad or other tablets/laptops for their birthday or christmas, isn’t such a bad idea for a present??? even if yeah. apple is overrated and overpriced to the max. but suck it up and pay for your child’s future education??? even it means getting a cheaper laptop or tablet for your kid.

all i can say on the above point is that yes. the idea of ~bring your own device~ policies does set many families back- especially those in/from lower income areas/backgrounds or single parent families... considering that a decent tablet will set you back at least $500 and a decent mini laptop is around the same.... but bigger and better laptops are around $1000 on sale (windows) or idek like $1,200 on an apple education pricing deal. like yeah. it’s a demarcation thing and also setting some people up to fail. and again, this has been made increasingly obvious during covid due to different families acces to buying laptops/tablets or other internet connection means. i also understand that these big ticket item purchases of tablets/laptops hits the hip pockets of everyone harder during the pandemic, especially if you’re struggling with debt like mortgage repayments or whatever while being made redundant or are being paid less while working from home.

okay. not to sound like a spoilt brat of a kid, but i got my first laptop, an i-book G4 for my 10th birthday in 2005. then almost 10 years later, i got a macbook for my 18th birthday (and for my HSC/end of high school exams) in 2013. yes, this is the macbook that i promptly fucked up two years later in 2015, by trying to encrypt the hard drive, since i was taking it to uni and it had all my internet passwords remembered on it along with my banking details. the same goes for my other windows laptop... where the hard drive just decided to fry itself like 4 months into me using it, along with the trackpad. and that was a $1,200 ASUS laptop (bought on sale) that i was using for uni. and then finally my little HP stream laptop’s keyboard shorted out halfway through a creative writing class (that was $500 and it only has a 28gb hard drive so it’s very light and good for transport).

but my point is, me having my own laptop (as opposed to using the family computer only) helped me immensely in my studies..... and they were literally fucking essential to me both in business college and uni. but they were also helpful in late high school, considering that 90% of my assignment work was expected to be typed out in microsoft word or powerpoint or excel (for maths and science). or for more creative projects, i was expected to use adobe photoshop and video editing software like imovie or adobe premiere pro (art/computer tech/drama/that weird year 7 subject i did called INTEL) and garageband/sibelius (for music). how on earth was i supposed to keep doing work on adobe photoshop or word etc at home if i didn’t have my own laptop to continue the work???

because as a final point, for me, literally by year 10 in 2011, NOT ONE of my assignments was expected to be handwritten (bar my actual exams or in class tests; also state tests/exams etc; or if it was a poster or visual art). if you dared to turn in something handwritten, the teacher and student interaction would be like the following example:

teacher to a kid whose handed in a handwritten assignment: did you not read the assessment outline? it said WORD PROCESSED WITH WORD! what is this handwritten thing? okay fine. i’ll take it this time. but read the outline next time, timothy!

timothy: *stammers out* s-sorry miss/s-sorry sir *stalks away from the teacher’s desk in embarrassment and shame*

the teacher, probs thinking to themself: weird that a kid thinks they can hand in something handwritten. silly, really.

the above scenario was the same for me in years 11 & 12. also, by year 9/2010, we were using the education management system moodle (and maybe early stage presi for online presentations) for both of our HSIE subjects (history and geography) and i think a couple of other subjects, during most lessons and especially for class work that involved group work/class discussions, via online discussion boards function. my year group was actually was actually one of the test year groups for the early models of moodle. so by the time i was in uni, i was a native to using moodle; so i could skip the “moodle help tutorial” subject portions on it in every class.

hell, for today, i wouldn’t be surprised if foreign language subject faculties in high schools are now using school subscription class accounts or something for duolingo or babbel. and today, kids are learning coding from like year 4 onwards, i think, on apps at school as part of their science & tech studies lesson portion of the day. how on fucking earth are kids meant to keep up with their class work progression on coding apps or whatever, at home, if they don’t have their own laptop/tablet??? ridiculous. how would kids fare today without their own laptop/tablet, if all of their classwork for homeschooling is on like google drive/cloud or whatever other open source drive/open source cloud software their school uses?? or any other apps that their school might use??? obviously we are seeing this play out in real time during the pandemic, world over, where if a child is in a single parent family or if their two parents don’t have adequate enough resources/have been fired or let go from their jobs/juggling working from home and homeschooling; then it’s hurting these kids likelihood of doing well with distance learning.

but yeah. my point is that if your kid is asking you for a laptop or a tablet (regardless of brand) for their birthday or christmas, maybe buy them one?? because you never know. it may be the very thing at the top of their student resource list for the following school year. and also. do you know what stops kids fighting over their access to the family computer/tablet to do their assessments etc??? buying them their own personal laptops or tablets. even if they do cost an arm and a fucking leg. get your heads out of your asses and help your own goddamned kids (or relatives if it’s a nephew/niece etc asking for one) like you’re supposed to.

okay. for phones. i’ll admit i wouldn’t like a 10 year old having their own phone, because of social media being so easy to access on them. but if you don’t allow them to use the app store and don’t allow them to download instagram/facebook et al..... and give them the phone solely for safety reasons, i think that’s fine?

i’ve had a phone since i was 10 years old. also not to sound awfully clichè, but i turned out okay??? i had to have a phone back in year 4/2005 due to safety and also family issues. do you know what my teachers did with it? locked it away in their desk til the end of the day. obvs they had to remind me to take it home sometimes (bc i did leave it behind at school in the desk a few times lmao) but yeah. i was alright. if a kid wants a phone..... maybe make a compromise and get the classic nokia 3310 or something?? like i obvs agree that kids as young as 10 defs don’t need a smartphone like an iphone or a samsung galaxy. but a rock solid and basic nokia 3310 or whatever with no wifi access??? that’s good enough imo.

Neutral Shades

We humans love a good dichotomy. It makes it easier for our feeble minds to comprehend. If everything can be bifurcated, we have only two options. Take your pick.

Left or right. Right and wrong. Black or white. Good or evil. Heaven or hell. God or Satan. Hot or cold.

And then there is the issue of gender. There are two primary genders, male and female. Notice I didn’t step into the mine field of other genders, because there are statistical outliers, genetic abnormalities, and self-identification matters, all of which are fine. For the purposes of today’s blog, though, we are going to focus on the big two.

And that is something that marketers have long exploited. To make it easier for us to live with this duality, marketers have conveniently color-coded products aimed at one or the other, the result being a sea of blue and pink products aimed at the children, and adult versions with their own nuance. Kids quickly learn which aisle is theirs, and adults come to learn the colors and shapes of products developed for their gender.

Yesterday, the California Legislature passed a bill that would require large department stores (i.e., those with 500 or more employees in the state) to have a gender-neutral section for selected children’s product categories. While the wording of the bill is vague as to what constitutes a “department store,” it was very clear in outlining the categories that must be degendered: a “reasonable selection” of childcare items and toys targeted at boys and girls 12 years of age or younger. Take that, Barbie and GI Joe.

How this is done is at the discretion of the retailer, but it is unclear if this includes stores like Target and Walmart. The fine for the first offense is a paltry $250, with subsequent offenses rising to $500. In other words, this bill, if it ultimately is enacted, has no teeth.

And what is a “reasonable selection?” Good question. The human in me would like to see this spelled out in black and white. Because I’m dichotomous like that.

Republicans blanched at this proposal, arguing that parents should be able to make these decisions themselves, and that kids should just be kids. Implicit is their agreement that our culturalization is correct.

Democrats argued that in having gender-neutral sections, these could be safe havens for children who wish to cross societal gender-based lines, like a boy playing with a Barbie, or a girl with a Tonka truck.

The bill does not delve into clothing, which would remain separate sections. Let’s not go there. Or, as The Offspring once sang, “You gotta keep 'em separated.”

Now a lot of people love to bash California for some of its legislative acts, like banning plastic straws. I, on the other hand, applaud California for being willing to tackle the tough issues. They may not always be right, but at least they are grappling with sticky, contentious matters, and are willing to put them under the magnifying glass.

And as much as I do not squabble over gender blurring, transgender matters, etc., I do have a problem with the government meddling in how a store displays its wares. In other words, this crosses the line of right and wrong.

If a store wishes to have a gender-neutral section or signage, as Target has been doing, good for them. Insert some applause here. But this bill is a slippery slope, and once you start mandating things for children’s products, it might cause lawmakers to begin thinking about items sold to older folks too.

Then there’s the “pink tax,” which points out that a lot of female personal care products cost more than their male analogs, like razors. They both cut hair, but why are men’s razors often cheaper than women’s?

While the bill may be well-intended, I think it over-steps the government’s bounds. Childcare products and toys are not at all in the same league as heavily regulated products like alcohol and tobacco. Let’s not complicate matters any more for the retailers (and to be fair, this bill would give a free pass to small shops).

Rather than worrying about keeping the boys separated from the girls or not, maybe they should be concerned with encouraging companies to do their own business as best they can, leaving it to them to make their own policies. And, just as in all things shopping, we can make our own choices.

Like most people I’ve been into cycling since I was a kid.

I remember opening my first mountain bike one Christmas. I couldn’t tell you anything about it apart from it being black with yellow tires.

I remember going for my first ride with my mum walking along side me and my brother. This is when a stranger stopped us to say my handlebars were on backwards.

What happened to that bike I have no idea. Like many of the bikes I had growing up, it most likely ended up a rusting hulk in the garden because we didn’t have the space to keep them inside.

Anyway, fast forward a about a decade and many bikes later. I’ve amassed a small fleet of custom bicycles that have occupied my spare time over the past 4 years.

The first one on the list would be my Duracell mountain bike. I got this as it was being given away as a promotional item. I don’t remember what exactly because I’ve owned the bike for at least 10 years in total now.

I used it a handful of times when I was 17, but living in a hilly valley town made it difficult to use and thus it was resigned to the garden until I moved to Cardiff in 2015.

As I’d moved to the city for university and work. I figured I’d need a mode of transport, Cardiff being a fairly flat city made the idea of cycling fun and easy. That’s when I decided to dig the Duracell bike out of retirement.

Needless to say, the bike was completely seized. I remember there being a puncture in the rear tire when I last used it, but being sat in the garden for all that time had taken its toll.

As I was unfamiliar with bike maintenance and repair (I had never even opened a puncture kit) I was unsure if the bike was worth saving or if I’d have to just buy a new bike, however having a limited budget at the time made looking for a new bike difficult.

So seeking some professional help, I went to my local Halfords store to see what they could do.

As it happens a friend of mine worked there and gave me the news that he could bring the bike back to life and have it in working condition for £55… Bearing in mind I had to carry this bike into the store because it was completely seized up.

Fast forward a week and here’s what I got back!

They had replaced the bottom bracket, brakes, brake levers, brake pads, inner tubes, brake cables and housing, gear lines and housing, front and rear derailleur arms and the rear cassette…

For all of you that are unfamiliar with bike anatomy, that’s basically everything that makes the bike move!

Of course. As happy as I was with the resurrection of the bike, I just couldn’t leave it in its stock setup. I had to make this mountain bike a useful city commuter that can take the urban and the mud. I started out by adding pannier racks and bags.

Ultimately the pannier bags above lasted about a week and the handlebar bag even less. They didn’t suit my needs, and keeping things on your bike while it’s locked up on the street just isn’t a great idea.

My modifications from this point had whole practical influences. I changed out the bars for a straight bar from Brick Lane Bikes and swapped out the horrid grip shift gears for some new combination Shimano EF41 quick shifters and brake levers. Finished off this some gold bar tape… Just because. This setup was then improved with the addition the Takeaway tray, another item from Brick Lane Bikes.

This setup helps me I’m the city because it makes the bike so narrow. I can filter through the heaviest traffic without worrying about accidentally scratching other vehicles, and the tray on the front has come in handy on so many occasions.

Later additions came in the forms of a Pendleton satchel bag for my everyday use, and some metal carrying cages.

While in uni, using the duracell bike. I realised that sometimes I was taking out a really heavy bike built to carry things when all I really needed was something simple and lightweight to get me from A to B. So as a result of this I ended up buying a new bike from ebay.

Brand new this bike only cost me £160 including delivery.

A nice, simple, single speed bicycle with nothing unnecessary weighing me down… The only problem was, I hated the bars on it for some reason.

I already knew what I wanted, dropped racing bars and 2 position brake levers like I’d seen on vintage 10 speed bikes.

I found it a great bike and took its place as my main ride depending on if I knew I’d need to carry anything heavy or bulky.

When I had these 2 bikes up and running my commute to work was only around 500 meters or so, I made a point of living close to my workplace. In fact, some mornings it would take me longer to get the bike out of my flat than it would take to cycle to work.

However, in February 2017. My place of work changed location. Which meant that my 500m trip to work became a 7 mile round trip. Needless to say this was a massive step up in regards to my previous cycling endeavours.

The first few weeks were hell and I still couldn’t work out which bike would be better to commute with. A lighter bike with only one speed, or a heavier bike with the ability to adjust the gears… over time and with a lot of practice I was capable of cycling the route in a best time of 15:30 with either bike. I still believe I could have got that down to less than 10 minutes if it wasn’t for the 10 sets of traffic lights on the way. My health improved massively and my asthma almost completely disappeared. I was in the best physical shape I had ever been. My thighs muscles had even doubled in size!

As of this post I have started a third bike build for the sake of fun. This project bike was actually acquired as the same time as the duracell mountain bike and was in pretty much the same condition when I dragged it out of the garden at my family home.

I proceeded to strip off all the parts I didn’t want or were too damaged to use. This left with the frame and forks, wheel set, front crankset, pedals and rear cassette.

The plan is to get the bike up and running as a single speed cargo bicycle for now, with the intention to eventually get an 80cc engine kit and make it work as a cargo moped! I’ve only got as far as to get the wheels re-wrapped with City jets and I’ve also already started to cover the frame with stickers… Because it’s my project and I want to… other parts I’ve been looking at including this flat rat handlebar rack by Brick Lane Bikes

I know this post isn’t for the purist cyclists put there. Nor is it for the mountain bike crowd, or even the city commuter crowd. These bikes are built to my own, very weird specifications. They all serve a purpose that I need them to. And honestly I do it for the fun of building. There’s nothing more rewarding that looking at something you’ve created with pure glee and pride. Here’s to running these bikes for years to come!

I think it tells you something about my answer that I looked at my monitor and just started laughing!

This post has a list of Australian vendors that you might like to check out as a good list of options, but, in all honesty, shipping is the single biggest problem when it comes to online purchasing here. It’s why I focus so much on offline toys in my own discoveries, because buying from local online retailers isn’t affordable or justifiable for me. This isn’t easy for many of us, mind, but I’m in a situation where enduring the hell of offline shopping is better than paying $10 AUD for a parcel to arrive on my doorstep.

Australia Post charges so much for shipping that it is almost never affordable to purchase online from an Australian retailer. Most of them charge either flat rate shipping (Sensory Oasis for Kids charges $10 AUD flat rate shipping, which isn’t bad if you’re buying lots but is terrible if you only want one item) or somewhere between $8-$13 AUD shipping for a single toy. If they use a pre-paid Australia Post satchel, for example, it costs $8.50 AUD for 500 grams or less. That makes it easier for retailers to ship, but costs us a lot more, and sometimes retailers add a dollar or two (or more) on top of that for packaging and handling, to make a bad situation ridiculous.

If you want chewables, I’d check out Chewigem Australia: most pendants are $22 AUD but they only charge $7.50 AUD flat-rate shipping to Australia and NZ. If you don’t mind waiting a little longer for things to arrive, though, I’d actually just buy from Stimtastic, since most of their chewables are $10 USD or less (some much less). Even with the international shipping from the US, you’re saving money because the toys themselves are that much cheaper.

(My package from Stimtastic took nine days to arrive, so it isn’t a long wait.)

If you’re close to a K-Mart store and can get there in person, I’d recommend checking them out, as I’ve found a lot of stimmy items there, usually for good prices. (Check out our tag for some examples!) Their shipping fees, though, are a minimum of $10 AUD, so again you need to buy lots for it to be worth it, and that’s assuming you don’t buy so much you bump up the shipping to another weight bracket.

If you’re in Victoria (I believe there’s only a few stores elsewhere) Daiso is another great inexpensive department-meets-dollar shop for stimmy items. No online store, sadly, but fabulous if you can access it.

Otherwise, I would direct you to your local dollar shop (many stock spinners, fidget cubes and fidget pads now) or toy stores like Kidstuff and Toyworld. (Here’s our Toyworld tag for examples of the toys I’ve found there, including Tangles and Koosh balls.) Big W and K-Mart now also stock the Zuru Fidget Cubes ($13 AUD each) and all the major department store chains have spinners.

For online retailers, if you’re not after chewables, I’d direct Aussie stimmers to eBay, AliExpress and Banggood. You can get squishies, spinners, Tangles, chain fidgets, knock-off fidget cubes, boinks, fidget pads and other fidget-type toys. Many are $10 AUD or less, many are much less than that, and many listings have free international shipping. You’ll have to wait (anywhere from a fortnight to five weeks for me, depending on item and country of origin) for delivery from China, Hong Kong or Taiwan, usually, but it is so much more affordable.

As a case example, this weekend I bought four of the Tangle Jr Fuzzy knock offs ($12 AUD), three Tangle Jr knock offs ($3.87 AUD), a single Tangle Jr ($1.39 AUD) and three items from Banggood ($5.05 AUD) - a spinner cover, a chain fidget and a wooden fidget stick. So, that’s eleven things for $22.31 AUD, all with free shipping. That’s a spending spree for me, but I’m paying just over $2 AUD an item, averaged out. I’ve paid more for some K-Mart stim toys.

Yes, these toys are all knock-off versions, and that carries quality risks - you really don’t know ahead of time how good any one particular knock-off will be - but they’re affordable. The biggest downside for me in shopping on those stores is trying to find things. There’s often so many listings for each category (especially spinners and fidget cubes) that it’s confusing and overwhelming. There’s pages and pages of items, with a variety of shapes and styles and prices, and that doesn’t make browsing easy or simple.

Otherwise, my answer is to do what I’ve done - DIY it. Here’s our first DIY master post, and here’s the second. Of course, not everybody can do this for a variety of reasons, but there’s tutorials on both posts for lots of different toys, and hopefully there’s a DIY for you that suits your price, skill and access needs. I’ve made bead lanyards, slimes, weighted plush, marble loops, marble mazes, bead fidgets, bean bags, fabric chewables…

If any Aussies have a store with affordable shipping costs, please let us know, but right now I honestly don’t have a lot of recommendations because they’re all expensive.

I thought there is no Sunny Deol but then he came with his overly cranky father Amrish Puri.

I believed till the half way of this movie that Amrish Puri is the actual villain(old habits, HAVELI) but he wasn’t and Sunny Deol the great is his younger son (how often do you see that).

Then Amrish Puri started coughing like hell, so they decided to move to the city where Amrish’s elder son lives i.e. Bombay. Please note Banaras is not a city in India and there is no hospital there to take care of Amrish Puri’s cough(as shown in the movie).

He met with this sweet girl named Gauri (nobody knows her real name), she told him that she’s a nurse but she was a dancer. She offered to give him a tour of the city during which they both fell for each other and started dating.

Anyhow, Sunny boy’s elder brother’s book shop was also in trouble so he decided to join the group to save that Old Shitty Bazar.

OMG Amrish Puri got throat cancer and Sunny boy can’t control. Tough to make this man cry.

One day Sunny and Gauri were returning home from their date, widow of Om Puri was crying and Katya’s brothers want to kill her.

Sunny boy cannot resist any fight scene so,

Who are you and what business did you start?Hey, y’all! I’m Hagan Walker - one of the co-founders of Glo! We make liquid-activated products under two different brands - Glo Cubes, which are light up drink cubes - and Glo Pals, light-up sensory toys for children. Both incorporate the same patented liquid activation circuitry.Basically, you drop one of our products in liquid and it uses ions in the liquid to bridge an electrical circuit, causing the cube to light up. Not only is the circuit patented, but we also have a unique design that isn’t triggered by residual fluid or ice. This means Glo Cubes work very well in a restaurant setting. When someone finishes a drink, the light goes out, indicating to the server that a refill is needed. The same idea translates to the Glo Pals. These bath toys only work in liquid - just draw a bath and drop them in. I wasn’t the best student or the brightest, but I found my niche and studied electrical engineering. I thought I had it all figured out - I had some great internships lined up and were the first student from the state of Mississippi to intern at Tesla in Palo Alto, California. My passion was automotive engineering and we had a great program here at Mississippi State University, called EcoCAR, that gave me some excellent hands-on engineering experience. The goal was to make it to Tesla, get offered a job, and take off to California.That didn’t happen.I was offered a position at Tesla as a body controls engineer, working on the falcon wing doors for Model X, but fate had different plans. I turned that position down to return to Mississippi and take a chance with something a bit different - making light-up drink cubes. You see, right before I left for my summer internship at Tesla, a friend of mine asked for my help with a classroom project. Kaylie Mitchell was studying graphic design and her professor tasked her with coming up with a conceptual company and product that naturally drew one’s eye to the product. Kaylie thought, if a drink lit up, people would inherently look at it. She wanted to go above and beyond on this assignment and reached out to me to create a prototype for her class assignment.We decided it had to be liquid-activated for ease of use and sanitary reasons. The first prototype was made out of a toothbrush travel case with some electronic components encased in hot glue to make it waterproof. It certainly wasn’t pretty, but it worked, and her professor was impressed with the initiative. She encouraged Kaylie and me to present the idea for this conceptual company and the product to the Mississippi State Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach’s (CEO) annual competition. We decided to give it a try - there was nothing to lose. Neither of us had a background in business, but we practiced, rehearsed, made new prototypes, and finally presented.We won first place - $15,000 and free participation in a summer incubator program.While I was off at Tesla that summer, Kaylie spent the summer helping to further refine what the hell we were doing. I would task friends that I met during my internship into helping design CAD models, and we used a bit of the money from the competition to buy a 3D printer. We shipped it to California and it was in the closet of the room that I was renting. I’d work at Tesla during the day, and then my friend, Nick Beyrer, and I would print 3D prototypes at night. I’d ship those back to Kaylie for the weekly design reviews that she had to participate in, and that’s how our first 124 prototypes were developed.imageThe 3D printer in our first “office” - a walk-in closetAt the end of summer, Tesla asked if I was interested in staying on. At this point, Kaylie and I thought we had a good chance of finding an angel investor. I packed up and headed back to Mississippi to finish my final semester and make a final decision on my post-graduation life. We found an investor, and I decided to stay in Mississippi - trading my automotive engineering dreams to instead created liquid-activated, light up drink cubes.Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product.I graduated in December 2015 and started as employee number 1 at Glo in January 2016. Our bank account had $30,000 in it from our previous winnings and our first investor. We thought we were set. I found a manufacturer in China and sent over the CAD files. We spent about $10,000 on tooling and various startup costs and received our first shipment a few weeks later. They were awful. My background has nothing to do with CAD - I had no idea what I was doing - and ** I realized I had just blown $10,000 - just like that**. Luckily, I found some help through a mutual friend, David Francis, who fixed our files for manufacturing. We dropped another $10,000 and gave it a second go.This shipment was much better, but that $30,000 had dwindled to just $10,000 because of my mistakes. I was living off of a $17,000 yearly salary and things weren’t looking great. We still had to pay for patents, website costs, shipping software, office space, etc. I pleaded with an attorney to write our patent application for $500. We negotiated with a landlord for deferred rent. We “stole” the internet from the neighbors next door. I found a label printer for $25 from eBay. We had no idea how to mass-produce items, so our first packs of Glo Cubes were heat-sealed - by hand - in the office, with a paper label stapled to the top. We made it work - but we knew we had to start selling to stay afloat.Describe the process of launching the business.We found a cocktail maniac, the Tipsy Bartender, on YouTube and reached out. He loved the Glo Cubes and asked us to send some. A few weeks later, the Aurora Borealis video came out. It got about 7 million views in the first week and we quickly found ourselves in a manufacturing and logistical nightmare. Picking up the phone and getting repeatedly turned down over a product that I created was like someone punching me in the gut, over and over again. However, this eventually paid off - we found a tea bar (of all things) that agreed to a $40,000 recurring order and kept us afloat for a while. This wasn’t our only order, but it was the biggest at the time. We hustled for the next year, working to capture and retain customers, creating actual packaging, hiring our first intern, Shelby Baldwin, and finding out what we needed to do next. We were hitting our stride and ended 2016 in the black. Not by much - but not bad after just a year of sales.In early 2017, Kaylie made a decision to depart the company. We had different views on company direction, but she also had an excellent opportunity to get her Master’s degree from the University of Arkansas, completely paid for. For a few months, things were looking bleak. It was just Shelby and me working day-to-day to find the next key account (by the way, Kaylie and I are still good friends and talk regularly).Thankfully, we were able to find a rockstar. I can’t speak enough about the Mississippi State CEO. Every time it seemed like all was going to fall apart, the CEO’s Directors Eric Hill and Jeffrey Rupp were there to motivate, to encourage, and to help bring the pieces back together. They introduced me to Anna Barker - an international business major - who had an ambitious idea of her own, which landed her with a stellar job offer from insurance conglomerate AIG. I was somehow able to convince Anna to stay in Mississippi and join in as my partner, and her accepting likely saved the company - and that’s how I now have a co-founder and also a partner.We brainstormed about new avenues, pursuing new sales leads, next steps, and everything in between. About that time, we also received an email from a parent. She had gotten our Glo Cubes from a restaurant in California and realized they were liquid-activated. She took them home and threw them into the bathtub. It was the first time her son, who is autistic, took a bath in weeks without crying, and it got us thinking - what if we targeted our products towards an entirely different market?That’s exactly what we did. Anna led efforts on the Glo Pals, creating the whole brand and little characters with their own personalities. We used our same liquid-activation technology, and pad printed each character’s face on our light-up cubes to create these products for a new market. Since the only difference between the Glo Cubes and Glo Pals is a pad print, the costs for creating this new product were super low. We were also extremely lucky to obtain the domain as well as @glopals for all of our social media handles.In late 2017, Anna and I went through our first funding round and secured $125,000 for growth. We were hitting our stride again and had money to take the next step. We hired our first full-time employee, Hanna Bridge, as our sales director and as sales picked up, we moved from our 700 square foot office into an incredible 3,500 square foot office in 2018.The Glo Pals also launched in 2018 and blew us away. In the first half of 2018, we picked up 400 retailers across the USA and Canada. By the end of 2018, we had picked up 600 more. Our small team of 3 full-time employees and 5 part-timers were working overtime to keep up, and things got so busy during Christmas that we had friends and family sitting on the floor packaging boxes because we were out of space.imageJanuary 2018 - Hanna, Anna, and I cut the ribbon at the new Glo offices, surrounded by friends, family, and community members.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?So now, there’s two brands - Glo Cubes and Glo Pals - and each has to be marketed completely differently. Let’s start with Glo Cubes:We look for key accounts. The Glo Cube model is based on volume. We attend trade shows and try to find restaurants, bars, and other entertainment venues that can buy in bulk. This helps our margins significantly because we can also sell in bulk without having to use retail packaging. These places tend to place a carton behind the bar and the bartenders do the job of adding them to drinks.We set up recurring sales. We’ll give discounts of 10 to 20% off of our wholesale pricing if they’ll sign a recurring contract. For most, this means receiving between 5,000 to 50,000 cubes monthly. By doing it this way, it makes it much easier for us to forecast sales and also helps provide a consistent revenue stream.We continuously brainstorm. It’s important to keep innovating. We patented the light-up bath bomb concept and then partnered with Da Bomb Bath Fizzers. They put our Glo Cubes inside their Glow Bomb and Disco Bomb. When you drop these bath bombs in water, they fizz, as all bath bombs do, but as soon as water enters the liquid activation chamber of the Glo Cube, the bath bomb lights up - and so does your tub. It’s a fun product that is a win-win for both companies. You can find the Glow and Disco Bombs at Target and Ulta.For Glo Pals:We appeal much more to the end customer. We focus heavily on the environmentally-conscious trendy mom, with children between ages 3-6 years old. We do this through more traditional avenues, like Facebook Ads and through collaborations with other notable and trusted brands, like Kaplan Early Learning Company.We are real. A strategic move by Anna and our Creative Director, Brittney Dowell, is to be completely transparent. We work very hard to engage with customers on Facebook and Instagram, we strive to have amazing customer service, and we show what’s happening behind the scenes - including showing how the Glo Pals are packaged, our office dogs, Brittney’s daughter Ida, and more. We don’t ever hide or delete comments, and we tackle issues head-on. So much of social media is a perception, and we want everyone to know that the products you see are designed right here in the USA to be both fun and safe by the team you see behind the scenes - not an illusion.We utilize rep groups. We’re still a small team, so it’s impossible to do everything in-house. We’re very selective, but we have a number of rep groups that help us pick up new stores throughout the USA and Canada. For their efforts, they get between 10%-15% of the sale as commission. This allows us to focus on core areas, such as customer service, quality, safety, and logistics while letting customers engage with sales reps that they already know and trust.How are you doing today and what does the future look like?Things are going well! We just hired an office manager and are releasing new products for the Glo Pals in about a week - stay tuned! We have been profitable since 2016, and have tripled revenue every year since then. Our average gross margin across both brands is 62%, including wholesale customers.I do believe ads are important, as long as you’re seeing the return that you want. For example, during the Christmas season 2018, we were spending $800 a day on ads. This seems crazy to me, but we set up rules on Facebook that as long as our cost per purchase was below $4.00 (a pack of four cubes is only $10.00), to increase spending by 2x daily. The ad spends after Thanksgiving started at $25, then went to $50, then $100 and so on. From November 15th to December 21st, we brought in $50,000 in sales with an average order volume of $19.75 and a gross margin of 79.6% (our gross margins are much better selling direct to consumers, of course).Since this time, we’ve seen a much less effective return on ads - our products have lots of seasonality - so we’ve cut down on spend significantly. We might spend $50/week on ads right now just to keep our Facebook pixel happy. We’ll pick things back up during the new product launch and as Christmas gets a bit closer.Earlier this year, we also picked up Cracker Barrel and Nordstrom as Glo Pals retailers and are working on several more key retailer partnerships for 2020. However, we’ve also spent a considerable amount of time this year working on the new Glo Pals product - it’s been a very close repeat of my first experience trying to get the Glo Cubes manufactured. The product is more complex, further complicating the manufacturing process - and it’s a good reminder of the things we take for granted every day. No one thinks about material thickness of the plastic on your phone case or how many iterations of that plastic cups were made before mass production started. Even the simplest of items probably took months of iterations before the design moved forward.Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?Yes! I’ve learned so much - and I continue to learn every day. I’ve always told myself the day that I’m no longer learning something new is the day that it’ll be time for me to find something else to do. That hasn’t happened yet, and I don’t expect it anytime soon.Starting a business can really test you as a person. You carry the stress with you - you’ll likely age a bit faster than your friends. I also worry about what’s next, and now that we have 15 people on the payroll, you also realize that those people are depending on you and your guidance for a paycheck. That can be compounded more when you know some of your employees have families, young children, and issues of their own.On the other hand, I’ve learned a lot about people. I’ve learned what to look for in new hires, how to find people that truly care about their jobs and are always willing to go above and beyond to move the needle forward (hint, it’s not always a good resume). I’ve learned a bit about compassion, and I’ve learned to be more appreciative. I’ve learned the value of a good partner - a true business partner is not someone who will always agree with you. Anna and I might disagree daily, but it forces us both to approach ideas from a different view, and typically, it allows us to land on the best decision, which is incredibly important.I also have this strong belief that we’re all put on earth to help one another. You can’t ever think of yourself as too good to help someone in need or too big to roll up your sleeves and get dirty. Even if your company or products don’t inherently help someone, you can take just a bit of your earnings and give back to a local charity, school, or community. It doesn’t matter how, as long as you’re doing good.What platform/tools do you use for your business?Yep, we’re the quirky group that doesn’t use Shopify. It doesn’t make sense to my engineer-y brain. I hate Shopify’s liquid language. So, for now, we’re sticking with Squarespace (which also has some work to do for more advanced users, but it’s the easiest platform for our whole team to use). We also have guest contributors write blog posts for us from time to time and it’s so easy to give permissions for temporary users in Squarespace. I also love their new integration with Zapier, and am a huge fan of ShipStation. For example, if a customer needs a replacement, they can just fill out a Squarespace form. This, in conjunction with Zapier, pushes a replacement request into ShipStation and automatically creates a shipping label for our fulfillment team.I mentioned ShipStation earlier and our team LOVES ShipStation. We’ve also been very happy with Finale Inventory once we outgrew the built-in inventory features of ShipStation. We also use QuickBooks, as it makes it easy to do online invoicing and is essentially the standard in small business accounting.We are an open book company and use Geckoboard to show company stats in real-time to a display in the company kitchen. It shows weekly sales for each rep, our overall company goal, aged accounts receivables, production stats, and more.We also use Pipedrive as our CRM and couldn’t make it without Zoho Desk for customer support management. We also use Zoho Mail - it’s dirt cheap and is packed with features.What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?I’m a big fan of the Great Game of Business by Jack Stack and Traction by Gino Wickman. These two books both emphasize the importance of making sure your team is on the same page and both provide helpful tools to get to that point. I also believe that running an open company is important.Every single one of our employees knows our revenue goal and each knows how their job affects that number. A designer called Golden Goose is selling a pair of $530 sneakers that appear to be taped together.

The shoes are described as having "crumply, hold-it-all-together tape details" and "a distressed leather sneaker in a retro low profile."

Some people think that the item has problematic implications.

Others like the retro-cool feel.

It's not the first time the brand has come under fire.

A luxury brand has come under fire over a pair of purposely distressed sneakers that some feel "mock poverty."

The Golden Goose "Superstar Taped Sneaker" costs $530 and is sold by several retailers, including Nordstrom. On the department store's website, the product description for the shoe states that it is a "crumply, hold-it-all-together tape details" and "a distressed leather sneaker in a retro low profile."

A closer look at the item shows that in addition to being taped up, the shoe is also generally distressed and scuffed.

At the time of this post, two people had left glowing reviews of the sneakers on Nordstrom's website — one a tongue-in-cheek reference to the "homeless chic" of "Zoolander's" evil designer, Mugatu.

"5 Stars for style, comfort, and originality. I must say Mugatu designed a similar shoe in 2001, but I'm glad to see the inspiration and trend came back into fashion," one person wrote. "One of the problems with the older designs was the fact that the tape served a functional use, over a decorative one. Serious upgrade if you ask me."

The other review was similar. "So excited for these shoes! In 1995, when I was 14 I had a pair of these sneakers. I have kept them. I tried time and again to make the dirt marks on the side just right and applied some duck tape to get the look of the Golden Goose," they said. "But, you just can't recreate that hundred dollar flair and the look of having skateboarded for 52 weeks straight."

But one person was less thrilled, giving the product one star out of five.

"I find it really distasteful to glamorize poverty with obscenely priced sneakers," they wrote. "I expect better taste and judgment from Nordstrom."

Other people on Twitter have echoed the reviewer's sentiment.
