At the beautiful town of Veere we found this passage that leads from the seadiked to the strongholds surrounding Veere. The passage is called “Steenen Beer” (Stone Bear). Vandaag wordt zeer slecht weer en regen voorspeld, met zelfs een minieme kans op een tornado, aldus het KNMI. Maar in de nacht van 31 januari op 1 februari 1953 uur was er pas echt sprake van een catastrofale storm. Die dag kwamen springtij, stormvloed en een dodelijke windrichting samen, waardoor het water in de zuidelijke Noordzee een ongelooflijke hoogte bereikte. Dit leidde tot dijkdoorbraken en overstromingen in Nederland (1836 doden), Belgie (28 doden) en Engeland (307 doden). In Nederland verdronken alleen in het Zuid-Hollandse Oude Tonge al 306 mensen. Oorzaak was de verwaarloosde dijkbescherming na de crisis van de jaren ‘20 en ‘30, de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de wederopbouw. Na de ramp werden de Deltawerken ontworpen, een reeks van dijken en dammen ter bescherming tegen de zee. De grootste is de Oosterscheldekering. Over een lengte van 9 km is de Oosterschelde afgesloten door 65 sluitband pijlers van 30 tot 40 meter hoog. ————- Today a summer storm is predicted in The Netherlands. But this storm is nothing compared to the storm that hit us on January 31st and February 1st 1953. A chain of events let to the highest water level in the North Sea in centuries. Dikes in Belgium, the UK and The Netherlands breached and more than 2000 people died, mainly in the Dutch provinces of Zeeland and Zuid-Holland. After the flood a series of protections against the sea were created, the Deltawerken.
