The second baseman hit .348 for the series with two home runs and three RBI. His solo home run in Game 3 of the ALCS gave the Astros a 1-0 first-inning lead en route to a 4-1 victory.
This is Altuve's first individual postseason award but not his first MVP. The six-time All-Star was named the American League's most valuable player in 2017, when he led all of MLB with a .346 batting average and the AL with 204 hits. The Astros won the World Series that season.
The disappointment did not deter the Astros. Their ascension to an American League powerhouse was, for 162 games, buoyed by two tremendous aces and the lethal lineup behind them. No team in baseball ever accrued a higher slugging percentage. None can claim the services of Gerrit Cole or Justin Verlander.
What often went unnoticed is the unflappable way with which this team conducted itself. A.J. Hinch harps on a trite but tested “next game up” mentality. The 25 men he manages made the philosophy an oft-proclaimed mantra.
Bullpen combustions, a lack of clutch performances or anything in between did not stop a pursuit of this pennant. They went 5-for-46 in this six-game ALCS with runners in scoring position. Verlander had his worst inning as an Astro in Game 5, pushing this series to a sixth contest. Little mattered.
They won a franchise-record 107 regular-season games and survived a five-game grinder against the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series. A ballyhooed battle with the New York Yankees lasted only six games, giving the Astros a second American League pennant in three years.
The team tore out of the first-base dugout with delirium after Altuve’s home run. The pint-sized power hitter was mobbed at home plate. Hinch, searching for a person to embrace, found George Springer and Michael Brantley to grab for a group hug.
Hinch managed the most matchup-centric game of any in his playoff career, one that required seven pitchers and no true starter.
Chaos commenced at 7:43 p.m, when Hinch trekked to the pitcher’s mound for his first of six calls to a bullpen seeking to silence some savages. Brad Peacock presented his manager the baseball and exited the field. Peacock was proclaimed the starter. He and Altuve are the only two who remain from the Astros’ 110 loss seasons earlier this decade.
Saturday was a day to exorcise demons, finishing the season of the sport’s most storied franchise.
Three separate relievers started their outings with two outs and at least two baserunners. No inherited runners scored. Will Harris got a dynamite defensive play from Brantley in left, garnering memories of Andrew Benintendi’s game-ending catch during the Red Sox’ ALCS win last season.
Representing the tying run in the seventh, Aaron Hicks got under Harris’ full-count cutter. The baseball looped against the shift and into no-man’s land in short left field. Alex Bregman gave chase. Brantley called him off. Brantley dove and secured the sinking liner. A strong throw behind Aaron Judge nabbed him at first base.
Harris and Brantley reside among the most reserved Astros. If either man emotes, it is a cause for concern or confusion. Neither was a worry on Saturday. Harris raised both his hands in the air and gave at least four fist pumps. Brantley allowed a wide smile to creep across his austere face. Harris awaited his outfielder’s arrival at the first-base dugout.

The Vancouver Canadians have their second victory of 2021 after a 4-2 triumph over the Tri-City Dust Devils at Gesa Stadium Saturday.
The C’s got to work against Tri-City starter Hector Yan in the top of the first inning by loading the bases with one out on a Tanner Morris walk, a Cameron Eden single to left and a free pass to Philip Clarke. Ronny Brito‘s fly ball to shallow center was not deep…
Just in time for today's World Series Champions banner raising ceremony, I finally posted my photos from my experience in Chicago during the 2016 World Series' Games 3, 4, and 5 as well as the Saturday after the Cubs won Game 7. Check out all the images here in five separate posts.
Remembering the 2016 Cubs (only through the victories, not the losses)
Hey everyone,
I’ll forgive you if you’ve already forgotten my post-game contributions during the Cubs 2016 regular season, with the Cubs winning the World Series and whatnot. But just to remind you, every time the Cubs won a game, I crafted a dedicated writeup based on the number of victories the Cubs had reached (e.g. when the Cubs won their 44th game, I wrote a piece about the fantastic baseball player and person, Anthony Rizzo, #44).
These posts were all submitted as comments on the Enhanced Box Score threads over at BleacherNation.com. I’ve been a reader/member in the community there for 4ish years now, and it’s a great collection of Cubs fans with a lot of intelligent discussion and questionable gifs happening.
These Win# posts evolved over time, as the first fifteen or twenty were just gifs (many not even baseball-related), while some of the late season writeups could have been standalone articles. The endeavor was all at once challenging, enjoyable, and addicting. Some of the posts I was able to write weeks in advance; others, I was still brainstorming what I could write about with 1 out in the 9th! All in all, I had a great deal of fun doing this, and I hope you all had fun reading them. I’ve gone back and put together the full collection so that you can experience the incredible 2016 World Champion ride all over again. Each link leads to the EBS page in which that win was achieved, so have fun reading what I had to say, as well as all the reactions from Brett and you guys to the games.
Here’s to back-to-back Cubs World Series championships and an even more fun 2017 season. Without further ado, the 2016 Chicago Cubs regular season, in wins:
**It’s easiest to find my posts in the comment section if you sort by ‘Best’. The good people at BN were kind enough to throw me some upvotes, and my comments usually floated near the top**

The Venezuelan born right hander is coming off of two decent seasons with the Houston Astros after spending five seasons with the Chicago Cubs. The on-again, off-again closer has accumulated 92 saves in his seven year career however it’s likely that that chapter of his career has passed, making Rondon a candidate for a roster spot in the New York Mets bullpen. While he wouldn’t be the closer of…
This week is headlined by the fluidity of the Houston Astros bullpen. While it can be a headache for fantasy managers, it makes sense to use relievers based on match-ups and key situations in the game rather than having defined roles. I think we’ll see this trend continue in the future as teams and players get more comfortable with the idea of not having a set closer, but a majority of teams…
