I think she’s right. I think it was explicitly gay or queer but wasn’t stated as that. Wasn’t stated as anything explicitly except best friends, soulmates and partners.

Which I mean… it can be all of that and still be romantic.

If you read the scripts… it’s pretty blatant as romantic. On multiple levels. We’re not even just talking Xena and Gabrielle specifically here. There was explicitly canon gay or queer characters in that last season. Brunhilda in ‘The Ring Trilogy’ is canonically gay or queer and she goes after Gabrielle despite knowing she’s with Xena.

The dialogue might have been just on the boundary lines. But that doesn’t negate anything being gay or queer. That merely just keeps it from being picked up by the censors because it can be read differently too - however, you’d have to work really really hard to read something into it that’s not gay or queer. But I digress.

At the end of the day, what you saw explicitly was love. So who the fuck cares about the labelling of that love?

And it didn’t need to be. You don’t ever go asking gay or queer couples to explicitly state that they’re a gay or queer couple. You can just already tell that they are.

You go by the experience. And what was experienced between them was love. True pure unconditional love.

I keep saying it. We’re never arguing canonicity of their love/romance or their individual gayness or queerness.

We’re arguing about whether they were an official couple or not because… even if they weren’t at any point an actual official couple, they were still in love/romantically involved. They were still canon that way.

A lot of the creators do believe that maybe they weren’t ever an official couple. But they were still best friends deeply in love with one another. That’s still canonicity.
