Your recent Lois post reminded me of an idiotically racist fandom I was a part of, where not only did people only ever focus on the brown Asian character to ship her with the boring white character, but literally always replaced all her character traits with “just the girlfriend” to depict said white character as more impressive or dominant in comparison. To this date, I have only seen 1 piece of fanart over 3 years that depicted the brown Asian character with the confidence she actually had in relation to the white character. Despite this, I still see everyone praise this fandom as being incredibly progressive and free of racism, and frame anyone who thinks otherwise as not being able to handle “valid alternate interpretations”. (The irony being these same people would lose their minds if the fandom treated the white character a fraction of the same way as they did the brown character) .
Oh absolutely I get you. I think fandom doesn't recognize that a racist dynamic or interpretation isn't solely like- racist caricatures/ slurs/ hate crimes or anything particularly heavy and blatant all the time. Sometimes it's our biases seeping into an interpretation, watering down a WOC to being "just the girlie" and using a ton of progressive language to cover it up ("she doesn't need a man!" "what's wrong with her being feminine" "free her from her relationship with a white man!" {<- performative way to say you don't like interracial couples} etc etc).
The Spiderverse fandom was a nightmare with this kind of stuff, especially with Hobie and Pavitr. Hobie is suddenly characterized as aggressive and dominant meanwhile Pavitr is feminine and uwu small boy when that's pretty much the opposite of their characterization in the movie. White queer fandom was too busy pushing "why can't men be feminine" without realizing they were infantilizing an Asian character and adultifying a Black character through blatant racist stereotypes.
"Fandom doesn't know how to be normal around characters of color" has just been my motto tbh. It's weird how I can list all my grievances with MAWS Lois explicitly as horrible regressive representation for an Asian character, and I still get push back from people who comfortably say "I see nothing wrong with all that. I think she has the right to be a xenophobe. This doesn't bother me."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sam’s first encounter with a super mutant was one w/ a missile launcher and they were like “what’s up?” and the super mutant launched the missile and sam ran and never returned to arefu to tell them about the vampires. (for the oc fact swap)
LMFAO HUGE MOOD!!!! ME SEEING CENTAURS!!!!!!
aside from befriending fawkes (and possibly any other super mutants that don’t want to rip her head off), marlene has a healthy distrust of them, and one time had to hide from a patrol by throwing herself in a ditch and covering herself with mud, hunger games style

Heckblazer and Lucifur.
I'm supposed to be drawing the next issue, but I finally watched The VVitch the other night and had to draw this first.

That Nanaue comic… I am going to be recovering for weeks!!! Absolutely spectacular.

Thank you! It was very cathartic to get that King Shark/Tana Moon comic out there, but especially after some fantastic fandom discussion on Tana Moon recently. There's so little in the way of Pacific Islander representation in DC comics, so the few we do have we should treat with care. Not discard and treat as disposable! That's our queer demigod now.

Once again thinking about Heckblazer, the joke with the accent being so utterly divorced from the way he wrote John in Hellblazer is weirdly prescient of the consistently inability for any adaption to treat him as scouse.

'I just want for magic to have weight and consequence' The show has derailed itself into a comedy so I wouldn't hold my breath.
Funny thing is, last season it wasn’t like that. John and Nora had several conversations about the nature of dark magic and how addictive and corruptive it is.
But this season, particularly the second half did a really good job of bringing in actual narrative tension. The last 2 seasons I felt like the big bad got kinda silly by the end, But not this one. Despite being a god, Lachesis was just scary because she was so human. Abusive manipulation is such human thing. It’s scarier because we’ve all met someone like that.
I’m wondering what they’re gonna do with Mr Magic Man in Space next season. Reminds me of Garth Ennis’ ‘Heckblazer’.

So all your Constantine talk and wanting more of your writing has convinced me to try Constantine but I haven’t read any of the comics - does that matter?
Ooooh well generally I think not -- Hellblazer was/is sort of niche (within the fandom world at least) and I think most of the people who watched and liked the show did so without having read the comics. I think most comics readers who were really hardcore into Hellblazer kinda hated the show, bc it is very different; we didn’t call it Heckblazer for nothing.
On the other hand there are a few issues that might be worth a look, just to see how the show interpreted them -- “A Feast of Friends”, most notably, is based on the first few issues of Hellblazer and is really good as far as comic book adaptations go, imo, in both keeping to the theme and mood of the original but deviating in enough of a way that it’s kind of a twist even for folks who have read the comic.
Another plus of reading the comics is that you notice just how well Matt Ryan inhabits John and his physicality, which is like, the best part of Constantine John.
So idk, I don’t think it’s essential to read the comics to enjoy the show, but it can add a few neat bits of context/dimension to the characters when you do.
