We have it all (Hualian adopted daughter fanfic) Chapter 10
Tumblr media
Gif by eaion
Disclaimer: This is a work of fanfiction. I only do this for fun.
Premise: Not long after comforting a bullied girl named Meng Ai, Hua Cheng and Xie Lian find themselves adopting her and together they form a family they didn't know they had needed for awhile.
Story/Genre tags: Slice of life-ish (mainly), Family focused, Hua Cheng's houses finally become homes, there may be an overarching story but that's not the focus, Hualian being parents, Fengqing being uncles, Lang Qianqiu falling in love with someone who was raised by the Xianle squad, technically post-canon (though I haven't read the books so if there are some ooc moments please forgive me).

Chapter 1, Chapter 2 , Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9

AN: Happy Chinese New Year! I'm two weeks earlier than my Shanyue Festival deadline.
One of the scenes in this chapter is Meng Ai (courtesy name Qing Jinjing) presenting her first original song which is Hong Jue. The voice reference I have for her is this video:
Hong Jue (female cover) by Kan

Imagine a guzheng arrangement of the instead of a piano in this cover. For reference a guzheng arrangement of Hong jue sounds like this:

Chapter 10
Meng Ai allowed herself to relax as her mother, Chenxi and other female servants help her dress. Tonight was not just the public celebration of the wedding anniversary of her fathers Xie Lian and Hua Cheng but it would also be her first official public appearance. Before then whenever she would accompany any of her parents and guardians out of her home they would be careful to not say her name too much around strangers and would only call her by name when they were fairly certain no one would be eavesdropping. When she was twelve Chenxi - though she still called her mentor Yu Yingtai or Yu-Laoshi out of habit - had suggested that she adapt a courtesy name. Normally for a woman a courtesy name would be given upon marriage but out of concern for her safety, all of her parents agreed to allow her to choose her courtesy name.
"Arranged marriages are for those who wants alliances and need money and resources." Her Baba Lang says when she asked about it one time.
"As you can see I don't lack in either."
"If you had it your way she wouldn't get married at all." Baba Lian says teasingly.
"Give me one example of someone who could give me something that I don't already have or something that I could get on my own. You don't need to be involved little one."
"If you had it your way I'll grow old without experiencing the touch of a lover!"
"If you want physical experience there's always the brothels in my city. I'll even make sure they give you the best and cleanest they have according to your preferences."
"Baba! I want what you and Baba Lian has. How am I supposed to have that if you won't let me have suitors?"
"Xiao Ai if our love story has taught you anything it's that if someone is meant for you they will come no matter how improbable the circumstances are." Baba Lian says with confidence and shares a look of love with Baba Lang.
"But I'm mortal."
"Even then, I fell in love with your Baba when I was still mortal too."
"Our point is it will happen if it is meant to happen."
"Stand up please A-Jing." She returns to the present as her mother helped her put her blue Mamianqun skirt. A matching color to her first Daxiushan robe that she will wear. Her pale pink Moxiong neatly tucked in her skirt complemented by the white Beizi robe that had delicate floral embroidery in the collar. The only thing that didn't belong to her is the white belt which she is borrowing tonight from her mother. Although her mother insists that she isn't using the belt as much anymore.
Then came the silver accessories commissioned by her Babas. Her hair was braided on the upper part on both sides and was tied to a halfbun. Secured by a white ribbon and a silver hair stick that had the design of a butterfly in it's side profile with three white flowers made of mother of pearl and had a tassel that had pearls at the end of each strand. She was still unmarried and therefore was allowed to still have her hair down. She could recall Baba Lang's reluctance on allowing her to have a Ji Li ceremony since it didn't matter to him whether she would be married or not. It took coaxing from Baba Lian with reasons that it wasn't simply based on marriage alone but a coming of age ceremony showing that she has come of age. Everyone keeps telling her to be herself and so she stubbornly went against any fancy complicated bun style that would weigh down heavily on her head. And so they settled on a fancier version of the Liusu Ji that allowed her hair to still be worn down.
Next her long silver tasseled earrings which her Baba Lang gifted to her. She suspects that he himself had specifically designed it for her for they attached to her ears without them needing to be pierced. The part where the stud would have been had a white flower and the tasselled ends had silver butterflies in various lengths. The shortest length was closest to her face and the longest was futhest away.
Finally there was her signature silver butterfly necklace that she always wore ever since she was a little girl. In it was the spiritual power of her adopted fathers to keep her safe from whomever wants her dead.
"One last thing." Her mother says as she places another necklace in addition to her silver butterfly. This new one had a lapis lazuli stone carved in an infinity knot. The chain of this new necklace was longer and was made to sit near her cleavage. Much lower than the collar bone area where her silver butterfly pendant resides.
"This was blessed in the lands where the Buddha first dwelled. Your father sent it here before his arrival so that it will arrive here just in time."
"Has he returned yet? Is he safe?"
"He had just arrived in Panyu's docks. If he finishes his business early he might be able to join us tonight."
Then lastly a light placement of rouge on her cheeks and her lips which enhanced her features instead of hiding it. According to Chenxi and her mother she was still too young to wear heavy makeup. And to both of them, though she personally disagreed, her round face and hooded almond shaped eyes shouldn't be hidden under layers of makeup.
"Now breathe." Chenxi her mentor says as they prepare to depart to the venue. This time not through the dice since she was supposed to be seen.
"No matter what happens tonight, the ones who truly matter will still love you. And there will be many more public performances after this. Do your best and enjoy yourself."
"Thank you Yu-laoshi, have I placed the glamour on my eye correctly?"
"You have. Your left blue eye is now the same golden amber as your right eye."
"Right, right."
"Breathe Jinjing."
"Be yourself A-Jing."
With her mother on her left and Chenxi on her right they help her down and now begins her walk on her own to the venue of the celebration. An area in between the dense part of Ghost City and Qiandeng Temple. Qiandeng Temple was strictly for those close to her Baba Lian and her Baba Lang wanted to keep it that way. Having the public celebration be just outside of it was a sufficient enough compromise.
"Ready for your walk A-Jing?" Yin Yu asks as he waits for her in the entrance of Paradise Manor. As much as she wants to make this walk on her own, she doesn't know the route going to and from the venue. She couldn't help but think that this is Baba Lang's way of making sure she at least has Yin Yu to escort her and deal with any unruly ghosts who might want to cause a ruckus. Her mother and Chenxi will be right behind her should anything happen.
"As ready as I can be, I'm more nervous about my guzheng performance."
"You'll be fine, you've been practicing for several months now. Just enjoy yourself. Do you still have your Tie Chi with you?"
"Yes, thank you Yin Yu." She says with a smile as Yin Yu escorts her from Paradise Manor to the event venue.
______________________________________________________________
"She'll be fine San Lang." Xie Lian says reassuringly as he gently massages Hua Cheng's forearm. The two of them were currently both seated in the place of honor. While his husband was always very liberal and usually gave additional effort whenever it came to celebrating their love, he had spent a lot more this year. Their little girl who was slowly becoming a woman in their eyes wanted to have the chance to finally make a public appearance. Her coming of age ceremony was still among those who were the most trusted to protect her and keep her connection to Fu Dao a secret. Any education involving Fu Dao was to be done on general terms publicly while carefully teaching Meng Ai her heritage in private. This was in addition to teaching her the histories of Xianle, Yong'an, and the current cultures of the reigning kingdoms.
He notices Hua Cheng's eye squint ever so slightly. A subtle sign of his nervousness that goes unnoticed by most beings. Perhaps it was because Hua Cheng couldn't help but feel protective over her when he began noticing the eyes of boys and men looking at her with various levels of interest, from innocent infatuated blushes to lascivious gazes. He couldn't find it in himself to blame his husband for being protective over her. While he was able to prevent him from seeking out her suitors and gravely causing any of them injury, he himself did not stop misfortune from happening to the more malicious and predatory suitors. As long as it was subtle, there was still the deniability of misfortune following him wherever he goes.
"Remind me again why she wants to make her appearance this way?"
"Because we love her and she needs to have her own experiences. We can't keep coddling her forever."
Xie Lian gently leads Hua Cheng's face to his own so that their eyes meet.
"We've given her wings, we should allow her to use them." He says softly but firmly. It wasn't the first time he had to allow a student of his to be their own person. It was painful but a necessary part of letting them grow.
His thoughts briefly returned to his decision on painting himself as the villain who committed the massacre of the gilded banquet. He has no regret in doing what he had done. It had preserved Lang Qianqiu's belief in justice and to rule Yong'an as fairly as he could with both the common people of Yong'an and Xianle spared from another internal conflict that destroyed his kingdom. From what he had heard it was under his reign that Yong'an had it's final era of peace and prosperity before subsequent rulers had lead to Yong'an's eventual demise. It didn't fall from a large civil war, but a gradual decline as common people moved to other areas that were more stable. Those that stayed relied on the leadership of local leaders that have slowly decided to stop paying taxes to Yong'an's royalty. And thus Yong'an was no more after Lang Qianqiu's ascension. Perhaps a part of himself wished that they had a more amicable parting. But he himself knew that the only way for him to thrive without him, is to allow his persona as Fangxin to die and remain dead. It is only when he could no longer rely on him can Lang Qianqiu be the leader and grow into what Yong'an needed.
He wasn't surprised when he learned that he had ascended into the heavens.
As far as he knew this was Hua Cheng's first time raising a child into adulthood. His husband's desire to keep Meng Ai safe and to give her everything she could ever want was obvious even to a blind person. And as much as he doesn't want to, it falls on him to slowly allow Meng Ai more independence as she transitions into womanhood. It also pained him to do so, but he also knew that if they didn't allow her to take her life in her own hands, she would resent them and see them as putting her in a gilded cage.
Hua Cheng gives him a soft nod as he holds his hand that still lay on his cheek.
"I just wish we could continue protecting her the way we've done all these years."
"She'll still have our protection, it's just that this time she could decide what to do with her life." He brings his forehead to touch his as he nuzzles his nose with his. He doesn't need Hua Cheng to say his worries out loud. She'll be fine, and when she needs them all she needs to do is call.
Even when nowadays she has become more reluctant in relying on them.
"Taizi Dianxia, Huachengzhou - the festivities haven't begun yet. You may want to restrain yourselves a bit before I could let you two go." Shi Qingxuan says teasingly as they take a break from socializing among the guests that have begun arriving.
"Since when did I care about what scandalizes others? Gege and I are married and this is still within my territory. If you're so concerned with it go deal with it yourself. Isn't that your job tonight?"
"San Lang it's fine."
"Oh so is that why you made me the host?! This is supposed to celebrate your marriage."
"And you like socializing, so get socializing. Hosting suits you better than Yin Yu anyways lest Qi Ying gets jealous of anyone he talks to." Not far from where they are was Quan Yizhen searching for his master. He has returned to his seat only to stand up thinking he might have seen him in another part of the venue. When it was clear that they were going to be ignored, Shi Qingxuan lets out an exasperated sigh as they go to the next batch of guests.
Just as they were about to move on to another group their path was blocked by Pei Ming.
"Is she here yet?"
"No, and even if she was I'm not letting you talk with her alone."
"Ugh Shi Qingxuan I'm not going to seduce her. I may be a flirt but I don't seduce every woman I meet."
"Can you blame me General Pei?"
"You and I may not be close but even you have to admit that I did a good job in reducing the number of cursed immortals that were threatening her."
"So did we." They both turn to Feng Xin and Mu Qing in their fancier attire. Both of them giving Pei Ming pointed looks.
"Allow me to finally satisfy my curiosity. Unlike you three, neither Tai Hua nor I have met her in person nor have we even seen a portrait or heard her voice. Speaking for myself I'd like to finally meet the girl I helped protect."
"Hmph isn't she a little young for you?"
"Nan Yang I just want to meet her! She's sixteen now isn't she? She could now get married if she wants to."
"I'd be more surprised if she did." Mu Qing says with a judgmental tone as he crosses his arms.
"Fine, fine, I'll behave and be a gentleman. She's not to be flirted with. Shi Qingxuan please inform me when she finally arrives." He departs from them as he makes his way to a group of priestesses who had been gazing at him with interest. From their blue and green robes they are Xiwangmu's priestesses and are here by Xie Lian's invitation or to assist Jing Mei, Xiwangmu's new head priestess.
"Well this is a surprise, normally you would be in your mortal guises when you're meeting Meng - I mean when you're meeting Qing Jinjing. Oh my this is going to take some getting used to." Shi Qingxuan shakes their head in embarrassment as they tap their fan on their head.
"She finally beat us last week in Go. She's earned it."
"About time too. I'm disappointed it took her this long."
"Awe no need to be shy Xuan Zhen. You can say that you wanted to show her your true form a lot earlier."
"Tell her that and I'm not going to visit you anymore."
"Hey! There's no need to be harsh."
"Then keep your mouth shut."
"Speaking of which, where is she?"
"Yin Yu is still escorting her. We've switched duties tonight, I'm the host and he's babysitting."
"Does she know that?"
"You know her Nan Yang, if she didn't know by now then she's either possessed or we have an imposter. Also try to manage your fear of the female form since she's going to be dressed up tonight."
"I - I'm not scared of her!"
"You haven't seen her dressed up. I have, and you're definitely going to run."
"That's because you couldn't help yourself and had to fix any ill fitting robes on her."
"My work speaks for itself. When we see her tonight one of the first things she's going to do is thank me for making the adjustments I made. She's one of the privileged few whom I will do it for. Why don't you watch what else you're going to say before you remove yourself from that very short list."
"I don't know Xuan Zhen, maybe we'll need to make sure she's not too upset if Nan Yang decides to run."
"If that happens I'll just knock him out and tell her that she could now defeat him by simply dressing up."
"Hey! I'm not going to fucking run! This is going to be different!"
"How so?"
"We raised her."
"Yes and?" "I raised her too and I don't run when she's wearing fancy robes."
"I know her, I know what she looks like, I've never fucking refused a hug from her whenever she greets us-"
"Till tonight."
"You don't fucking know that!"
"Well here's your chance. Don't expect an apology from me for knocking you out when you decide to run."
Feng Xin then turns around to the entrance of the venue as Yin Yu, Chenxi, and Jing Mei help Meng Ai enter the venue. Namely Yin Yu was clearing the crowd to make way for Meng Ai to enter. Chenxi on her left and Jing Mei on her right they help her lift the luxurious robes she wears as she makes her appearance. When Chenxi and Jing Mei were satisfied that she could walk on her own, they let go of her robes and watches her as she follows Yin Yu in making her way to Xie Lian and Hua Cheng. As she passes by them Feng Xin notices that he has begun to twitch in discomfort.
"Calm down. Didn't you just say you wouldn't run?"
"That can't be our little girl."
"She is, and you're proving us right - will you stop backing away, she'll notice."
"Fuck you."
"Nice to know she'll be so upset by you running away."
"Will you two behave! She's nervous - look she's slowing down a bit to keep her eyes forward while not tripping. Maybe I should make my way on front and officially start the festivities after she goes settle herself beside them."
"Help me restrain him first - don't worry I'll make this quick. I'll tell her not to dress up next time when you're around."
"No - don't you fucking don't! Punch and I'll punch back."
"General Nan Yang pull yourself together - it's still her. Just imagine her with her daily clothes if it will make you feel better. General Xuan Zhen don't start a commotion unless you two want to be thrown out. Jinjing wants to meet both of you in your true forms and she's always excited to meet both of you. Behave while I host the festivities."
Fortunately for the them Meng Ai was too focused on not tripping to pay attention to any of the whispers that she hears. She focused on taking deep breaths as she made her way on front of her fathers with Yin Yu leading the way. She takes a hopefully subtle sigh of relief as Yin Yu steps towards the side as she steps on front of her fathers.
"Taizi Dianxia, Hua Chengzhou, I present the lady Qing Jinjing."
She takes her cue and makes a formal bow to them as they go down from the platform where they sat. Her guzheng beside her seat located next to Xie Lian made her anxious but she calmed herself down enough to meet them with a smile.
"A-Jing you're finally here!" Hua Cheng says with joy as he embraces her. As far as he was concerned she made her formal bow and her formal walk. The bare arbitrary minimum requirements he would allow her to endure. Meng Ai laughs as he finally releases his hold on her as Xie Lian takes his turn to hug her.
"I'm sorry I took so long fùqīn I was starting to wonder if I might accidentally embarass myself along the way."
"You're here now that's what matters." Xie Lian says as they help her to her seat beside them. The guzheng taunting her ever so slightly.
No, she thought. You are not going to embarrass me tonight! I worked hard on writing that song - your presence is not going to taunt me. She felt more relieved as she finally reached her seat beside her fathers and was slightly tempted to give the guzheng a gentle shove to the side.
"Relax A-Jing." Xie Lian whispers as Shi Qingxuan formally opens the festivities.
"Take a breath." She does and she brings her mind to her breath. After a few rounds she gives him a small smile.
"Thank you lìng zūn." She couldn't help but giggle as Xie Lian shakes his head in response. While she did use a teasing voice, being referred to literally as "Your Majesty" when he has long removed himself from the life of nobility only to be thrusted upon it again as the acting Heavenly Emperor was somewhat jarring coming from his daughter who never cared about his position in the first place. Though coming from her he knows it's mainly to distinguish which father she is formally calling for. Hua Cheng was fùqīn, the more common formal address for one's father, while he was lìng zūn, a less common formal address that the masses adopted from royalty. He wasn't surprised by this development given how many kingdoms have a tendency to rise and fall over the centuries.
"You know we would be fine if you just called us Baba."
"And give myself away? Besides I like the idea that only the most trusted will hear me call you two Baba Lian and Baba Lang."
"It's too formal for family." Hua Cheng rebuts as he gives the signal for food to be served.
"Baba!"
"It's true though."
"Well what am I supposed to call you when you two are in disguise?"
"A-Jing just say we're both cultivators and continue to call us Baba. The most powerful cultivators have stopped aging."
"He does have a point A-Jing."
"Well everyone now knows I'm your daughter, shouldn't that give more reason for a formal address for both of you?"
"In my territory? I don't care. Up in heaven, they may care but I don't."
"In what circumstance will I, a mortal, end up in heaven? And I don't mean ascension."
"I technically can make you a part of my heavenly palace. And you would be part of the Middle Court."
"But that would make me a Junior official. I mean a circumstance wherein I stay mortal."
Xie Lian was spared from answering when Yin Yu gave Meng Ai a signal to prepare for her performance.
"Good luck A-Jing."
She gives him a nervous nod as she takes her time to make herself comfortable. She gives one last glance at her fathers and begins playing on the guzheng.
_____________________________________________________________
"We're late! We're late! Do you think they'll still let us in?"
"They will, just relax." Lang Qianqiu says as he reassures Xiao Mengyou as they arrive just outside the venue.
"Taizi Dianxia, allow me to go ahead and explain why we're late."
"Xiao Mengyou calm down, I'm sure they'll understand that fighting demons is part of the job." More than that, he might have an insight on what else might be going on. He doesn't have proof of it yet, but his instincts told him that the seemingly random outbursts of demonic monsters is somehow connected to the case of the cursed immortals. Perhaps it was just because their sudden appearance in areas where cultivators won't go was intentionally made to keep him distracted. He shakes his head to clear his mind. He'll have to consult his Guoshi on what he has observed. It wouldn't be the first time he thought he was right only to have his whole perspective forcibly shift.
Xiao Mengyou insists and he goes ahead while he takes this chance to be alone with his thoughts. The moon was full, but he could still see the stars as they shone brightly. Among those stars was the infamous star of solitude, the very star that Hua Cheng was born under. And from what he had heard, those born under it would either be extremely misfortunate or extremely lucky. While he was still wary of his Guoshi's husband there was no denying that he loved him and he would do well to stay on his Guoshi's good side to prevent his husband from using his luck against him.
He couldn't help but be a little bit jealous of those who were close to him.
Raising Guzi had given him a new perspective of how much elders could influence the youths. His Guoshi had killed his father on front of him knowing that he would jump into the concluding that he was solely responsible for the massacre during the gilded banquet. He made himself the villain and allowed himself to be staked into a coffin for the peace of Yong'an. He couldn't help but be reminded of Qi Rong's influence on Guzi. No matter how much efforts he took to show Guzi that he deserved more than just basic kindness, Qi Rong's sick view of the world had made Guzi settle for any act that seemed kind. Kindness that he thought Qi Rong gave. Now a young man Guzi had settled into a village not far from one of his temples. He still had issues with accepting acts of actual kindness, finding them too much. Which made it even more important that he was kind to him. Especially when not everyone in the world would be.
At this point he wondered how his Guoshi was still kind to him even after everything he has said? Even if they now worked closely in the heavens as he helped him with his duties as the acting heavenly Emperor, he was still nowhere as close as he was compared to the two Generals whom he has heard had more deep wounds in their history. Whatever he said couldn't compare to what they have done, and yet now they were a lot closer than before. Close enough that even their insults toward Hua Cheng didn't contain malice.
Then why did it seem that there was still a wall between him and his guoshi?
Before he could continue in his reflection he heard the notes of the guzheng play and came an enchanting voice. The woman's voice sang of love, devotion, sacrifice. The song was a tribute to Hua Cheng's love for his beloved. How his love for him transcends the structures of the three realms and nothing could stop him from being his beloved's most devoted believer.
He couldn't help but find himself lost in the world the song painted. And for awhile he simply closed his eyes as he listens to her voice sings of the longing for one's beloved.
When it was over there was a loud applause that followed with cries begging the woman to perform again. Whomever organized this party knew how to choose which performers to select. He wonders if Shi Qingxuan wouldn't mind introducing him to the songstress.
"Taizi Dianxia we can enter now, everyone just wanted to see the performance first before letting anyone in."
"I don't blame them, her voice is beautiful."
"Whomever she is she must be close to them for them to select her to perform tonight."
They enter and meet with the other martial gods before Xie Lian and Hua Cheng gets off from their seats of honor to interact with them. Or rather his Guoshi would talk with them and Hua Cheng just sticks to his side.
"Guoshi, if I may ask may I meet the songstress who had recently performed? Her voice and song moved me even when I was outside of the venue."
"My, my, my, even Tai Hua is enamored with her voice." Pei Ming's laughter was cut-off by Yushi Huang's pointed look.
"Don't tease, I'm sorry Lang Qianqiu but Qing Jinjing just left. Shortly after her performance she received news that her father is injured. She and her mother left immediately." Xie Lian tells him apologetically.
"Oh, has medical-"
"The best healers are with them right now." Hua Cheng says without hesitation. His tone alone told him not to concern himself with this matter but that they were well cared for.
"They're going to be fine your highness." Xie Lian says assuringly.
"You mentioned that you wanted my thoughts on the demonic monsters in your territory?"
"That can wait Guoshi, we're still celebrating your marriage tonight."
"The party has served its purpose. If they want to stay they may help themselves. But we may leave."
They go outside and Hua Cheng tosses his dice in the air and transports them into their meeting room in one of his many houses. Though a part of him couldn't help but be disappointed that he had missed meeting the songstress named Qing Jinjing.
AN:
The amount of research and internal debating that I had to do to determine which Hanfu style Qing Jinjing was going to wear for the opening was at least one week long. I spent my halloween rewatching the donghua (my main aesthetic basis) painfully ignoring the story and my favorite characters and scenes in order to try to discern what the main fashion for women's clothing was. It was fun but also a lot of work. And yes I know they mix and match the styles of different dynasties but from what I could see with my very amateur hanfu eyes; women's fashion seem to be dominantly based on the Song Dynasty style (from what I could guess). There were definitely liberties taken but if you look at the female versions of Wind Master and Earth Master the basic Song Dynasty style of a Moxiong (the "brassiere" that could also be worn as outerwear), tucked inside of a skirt (I'm not sure what kind of skirt the animators based it out of or if it is just artistic liberty to make it pretty and easier to animate - but I don't think it's a Mamianqun skirt since from what I've searched on google Mamianqun skirts even during the Song Dynasty tends to be more voluminous than what the donghua shows, or maybe I just couldn't find pictures of less voluminous Mamianqun skirts in the Song era), secured by a belt or a sash, then worn by a Bei zi robe (a type of casual outer jacket), or in more formal events the outer robe would be a Da Xiu Shan would be worn because of it's larger sleeves. I'm not entirely sure if the Beizi robe would be worn first and then the Daxiushan, but for the Hualian public wedding anniversary party this is the case for Qing Jinjing so that she could take it off after performing.
Some reference pictures for her attire:
Mamianqun skirt:

Website link: https://store.newhanfu.com/mamianqun-hanfu-horse-face-skirt-for-women.html?cgkit_search_word=mamian
I know this is a modernized version but I'm mainly referencing the color of blue-green. This is what I had in mind. This in my opinion is the main star of her outfit (and maybe it's because I'm biased because I really love the Mamianqun skirt - I'm already preparing my arguments to convince my parents that it is to pay tribute to our Chinese heritage. And my mother will predictably tell me to pass the bar exam first.). The Daxiushan robe matches this color.

Ancient Chinese hairstyles (NOTE: not definitive but this is the guide I used the most): https://anyofchina.com/traditional-chinese-female-hairstyles-with-names/
According to this source the Liusu Ji (Tasselled bun) hairstyle is the style frequently used for women in historical or fantasy C-dramas because it allowed them to still show off their long hair. And honestly I am weak for this hairstyle and I am so happy I finally found what it's called.

The world had long since abandoned gods.
Faith was a relic of the past, buried beneath layers of steel and neon, discarded like a broken circuit. Linkon, the floating metropolis, pulsed with artificial life—holograms flickered above glassy streets, cybernetic enhancements replaced human frailty, and AI dictated the flow of existence.
In this city of progress, myths held no power. The idea of divine beings watching over humanity was as outdated as the dusty relics stored in the forbidden archives. And yet, you still searched for them.
Tucked away in a forgotten sector of the city, past security barriers and abandoned research facilities, you found solace in the hidden archives. Not in the sterile, data-infused histories fed to the masses, but in real books—ones bound in fading paper, ink smudged from time’s relentless march.
One evening, while running your fingers over the spines of contraband texts, your hand halted on something unusual. Unlike the others, this book was pristine, untouched by dust or decay. Its deep, obsidian cover gleamed under the dim lights, the title inscribed in ancient, golden characters that sent an inexplicable chill down your spine.
Carefully, you opened it.
A Love That Defied Time
The words inside wove a tale unlike any you had ever read.
"Once, there was a prince who fell from grace, cast down from the heavens, yet he never ceased to rise again. A god, forgotten and scorned, who walked among mortals with a heart too gentle for his own good."
"And by his side stood a man dressed in crimson, a specter of devotion who defied even death to stay with him. The world feared him, named him a monster, yet for the prince, he would burn the heavens themselves."
Xie Lian. Hua Cheng.
Their story unfolded before your eyes—a love that transcended lifetimes, tested by suffering and war, yet unbreakable. Your fingers trembled as you turned each page, unable to tear yourself away. The world outside—Linkon’s ever-present hum, the distant drone of aerial patrols—faded into nothingness.
It was just a story.
It had to be just a story.
And yet, something about it felt real. Too real. The words didn’t just describe them; they breathed them into existence, as if the book itself were a gateway to something long forgotten.
A strange warmth bloomed in your chest, an ache you couldn’t name. And before you could stop yourself, you did something reckless.
You wished.
"If only gods were real."
The moment the thought crossed your mind, the lights overhead flickered. A sharp breeze curled around you despite the sealed room. The distant hum of the city momentarily died, as if the world itself had paused.
Then, silence.
A shudder ran through you. For the first time in your life, you felt as if someone—or something—was listening.
-☆-
Days passed. You tried to forget the book’s strange effect, but the feeling it left behind refused to fade. Every time you closed your eyes, you saw them—a prince in white, a ghost in red, standing together against the endless storm of time.
Then came the night of the attack.
The Wanderers struck without warning.
You were on patrol in the lower districts when the alarms blared—a chilling, mechanical wail that sent civilians scattering. The streets, usually lit with artificial brilliance, dimmed under the assault of the void-born creatures.
Wanderers were neither alive nor dead. Shadows of those who had been lost to the void, souls that failed to move on. They had no faces, only the distorted remnants of what they once were, bodies shifting like smoke, claws gleaming in the dim light.
You reacted on instinct. Years of training kicked in as you dodged the first swipe, rolling to the side and drawing your blade—a sleek, plasma-forged weapon humming with lethal energy.
A shriek echoed through the air as you slashed at the nearest creature, your blade carving through its form. It dissipated, but not fully. Wanderers never truly died—not unless something severed their connection to the void itself.
You fought with everything you had, each movement precise, honed through years of combat. But the numbers were overwhelming. For every Wanderer you struck down, two more emerged, twisting from the shadows like nightmares given form.
A swipe caught you off guard, claws raking across your arm. Pain flared, hot and searing. You staggered back, breath ragged, gripping your weapon tighter. Your vision blurred.
This wasn’t a battle you could win.
Then, something shifted.
A pulse of energy rippled through the air, a presence so immense it sent the Wanderers recoiling. The ground beneath you cracked, light spilling through the fractures.
A portal tore open behind you.
Swirling, radiant energy unlike any technology you had ever seen pulsed at its core. It didn’t belong to Linkon. It wasn’t part of the city’s controlled teleportation systems.
And yet, something deep within you recognized it.
It called to you.
With no other option—outnumbered, exhausted—you stepped forward.
And the world vanished.
-☆-
You landed on solid ground, but it was not the steel and neon of Linkon.
The air was different—crisp, untouched by artificial interference. The scent of blooming flowers and fresh earth filled your lungs, so real it made your head spin. The light was soft, golden, as if the sky itself had been painted by hand.
Gone were the towering buildings and glowing screens. Instead, endless mountains stretched into the horizon, their peaks kissed by mist. The trees swayed gently, their leaves whispering secrets in a language you could almost understand.
Your breath hitched. This place… it wasn’t Linkon.
And then, you saw them.
Two figures stood not far from you, framed by the setting sun.
One was dressed in pristine white, his robes flowing like silk spun from clouds. His face was ethereal, delicate yet filled with a quiet strength, his dark eyes reflecting something vast—like he had seen eternity itself and still chose to be kind.
Beside him stood a man clad in crimson, his posture relaxed yet carrying an undeniable air of danger. A single silver butterfly rested on his shoulder, its wings shimmering in the fading light. His gaze, dark and unwavering, locked onto you with an intensity that sent shivers down your spine.
Recognition struck like lightning.
Names, once confined to the pages of an old book, spilled from your lips in disbelief.
"Xie Lian… Hua Cheng…"
The words barely had time to leave your mouth before the world tilted.
Your knees buckled. The last thing you saw before darkness claimed you, was a hand reaching for you—soft, warm, real.
Then, nothing.

Rex Lapis has a nation to build from the wreckage and a people to defend from bitter gods and monsters. There is precious little time to dwell on the memory of lost allies, friends, or even lovers. The modest life of a florist never stopped Xie Lian from taking in stray animals he came across in the street, much to the dismay of his roommate Mu Qing and the amusement of their friend Feng Xin. A habit like this is bound to result in chance encounters, whether it be a white cat, an excitable pit bull by the name of Eming, or a man dressed impeccably in red.

au where Xie Lian, in his many centuries of travel actually did hear about the ghost custom of giving one's ashes to their beloved and even saw what crystalized ashes look like. The tale he saw ended tragically as they so often do, but he remembers both the tale and how beautiful the crystalized ashes looked because they were so unlike any other precious gem or crystal he's ever seen. So, when Xie Lian wakes up That morning and finds a thin chain with a crystal ring on it, he recognizes the ring as a ghost's ashes. He is then Very confused because it has to be from Hua Cheng, and while he doesn't think Hua Cheng would give him some random ghosts ashes, it makes no sense for Hua Cheng to give Xie Lian his own ashes considering they just met and Xie Lian is a god and he's a supreme Ghost King who should be very protective of his ashes since he has so many enemies no matter how well they may get along.
He's not really sure what to do. He's not sure he feels comfortable wearing the ashes of some random ghost. It feels kinda weird. But, the thought of Hua Cheng giving him his ashes just makes no sense. There is No Way Hua Cheng could possibly be in love with him. They just met! And Xie Lian isn't lovable. He's a trash god, literally and figuratively, while Hua Cheng is one of the most powerful and influential beings in the Three Realms. Xie Lian is the Laughingstock of the Three Reals. And while Xie Lian doesn't really care about positions, he's not conceited enough to think someone like Hua Cheng could ever love someone like him.
He has no clue what's going on and has many questions. Why did Hua Cheng give him this? Are they the ashes of a ghost he knows or are they random? Does Hua Cheng just collect ashes and give them out like souvenirs? Are they ashes of someone Hua Cheng cares about? Why give them to Xie Lian? Is this some sort of mind game? Is this a trap of some sort, if not for him, then for the ghost these ashes belong to? Does Hua Cheng want him to destroy the ashes? He's a god, so eliminating ghosts is kinda expected of him. What should he do with ashes!? Should he burry them? Continue to wear them? Hide them some other way? Give them to the Heavens and other gods?
Considering Hua Cheng specifically put them around his neck, it makes the most sense that Hua Cheng would want him to wear them, but ???? What???
What. Is. Happening???

The fengqing fanfic idea I criminally withheld from the world for nearly a year because I just.. forgot:
So, Mu Qing gets in a car accident and is severely injured. He’s either unconscious or very groggy and out of it as he’s being loaded up on a stretcher into an ambulance. The paramedic loading him notices that Mu Qing was writing a text to someone and his phone is still open to the unsent text. All that’s there is a cut off, “I lo—“ and the very kind paramedic, who thinks they’re being helpful to a stranger who might die and never get another chance to say goodbye to a loved one, promptly finishes the sentence for him and presses send.
Feng Xin, who was NOT expecting his rival crush to profess his love to him today in the middle of an argument would respectfully like to know what the fuck is wrong with Mu Qing for confessing his love and then immediately ghosting.
Needless to say, when Mu Qing is conscious enough in the hospital to look at his phone and see that 99+ notifications from Feng Xin alone and realize what happened to his, “I loathe you,” text, he instantly wishes he could die of mortification.

No Paths are Bound vol.1 by @cataclysmicevie 🔥🖤
this has been in the works since last november.
i discovered a friend i’d met through bookbinding also loved mxtx and when we agreed to do an exchange i knew exactly what i was making. could i have made this less than 6 books? absolutely. so many mistakes were made with these books but all in all i’m very happy with how they came out and i’m so happy she finally has them!
the art on the dust jackets is by @/ RACCUN7 on twitter and the end page art is by @huaepiphany !! both artists were so kind to let me use their art for this project and it would not be complete without it!! 🖤
if you’ve never read this fic but you love tgcf then i cannot recommend this enough. this fic is one of my top 5 all time favorite things i’ve ever read and to this day i think about the character development and story probably more than the original story and if ever there was an oc i loved it would be ren song. i think everyone should read this and love it as much as me and i cannot wait to make my own copy sometime :) i’ll probably post some more closeups of the other books soon, but i just thought i’d share these!

"The gorgeous female ghost with a poisonous heart" by @artingstarvist, an illustration for @naamah-beherit 's fic "you promise me heaven, then put me through hell"
For the last year I have been working on a complication bookbind of any and all fem!Hua Cheng, fem!Xie Lian, and hualesbian fics I can get permission for. This fic was obviously going to be a part of it and when @artingstarvist opened commissions, I knew I needed an illustration to add to the bind. The bind is still a WIP, but I hope to have updates in the near future!
Anyway - LOOK AT THIS ART!!! I have been enamored with Missy's style since coming across it in her fic Never Forget, Never Forgive (if you're looking for a rec - it is at the top of my list. A phenomenal coffin rescue fic with a sequel currently posting weekly!) She did an amazing job researching for the design; I keep finding more details each time I look at it. From the way she reincorperated bells into Hua Cheng's skirts, to the Miao inspired jewelry and the butterfly motifs - it is perfect!

𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀- Spanking, Pet names: ‘Good girl’ ‘Bad girl’
𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴- Possessive Hua Cheng & Possessive Xie Lian
————————————————————————
𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 the wife of the ghost king and a god was quite nice. You lived a life of luxury, always being spoiled with the nicest gifts and wonderful affection from both your husbands. There was never been a day when you had to worry of not being taken care of.
Both Xie Lian and Hua Cheng were extraordinary husbands. They loved and cherished you as if you were the most rarest thing on earth. They gave you all the love you thought you never deserved. They seem like perfect husbands, which they are, don’t get me wrong, but every good thing comes with a bad thing. What may that bad thing be? Well, they were extremely possessive.
This may be a shock to some people, especially with Xie Lian, not so much with Hua Cheng. I’ll let you in on a little secret, Xie Lian was the most possessive of the pair. He might not show it, but he definitely feels it. It even concerned Hua Cheng how possessive Xie Lian got with you, like Hua Cheng isn’t almost as possessive as Xie Lian is. Your husbands’ possessiveness does sometimes get the better of them, which leads to the scenario you’re facing at the moment.
Before I get into the current situation, let me inform you on the earlier events which lead to this one. It was a normal day, everything was smooth sailing. Ghost City was thriving, as it usually was. The streets were crowded with ghost, leaving almost no space for anyone to walk. The street vendors voices could be heard trying to draw the ghosts attention.
You were pushing passed ghost, trying to get out of the streets. You were holding a big basket of fruit that you manage to get a discount on. Of course, you weren’t paying attention to your surroundings and accidentally bumped into a ghost. You dropped the big basket of fruit, making it land onto the group. You looked up at the ghost, who was fairly good looking.
“Sorry,”
You spoke, your eyes never leaving the ghost’s jade ones. The ghost smiled slightly, replying to your apology.
“Oh no, miss, don’t be. Here let me help you,”
The ghost knelt down and started putting the fruit back into the basket. You also knelt down as well, hastily picking up the dropped fruit. Soon, all the fruit was picked up and you had a full fruit basket in your arms once again.
“thank you very much,” You smiled at the ghost.
“It’s not a problem, miss. I must say, you look extremely beautiful,”
The ghost flirted with you. You noticed his tactics in flirting with you easily. It was obvious, to you at least. You knew you should’ve said something about you being married, but you didn’t want to come off as rude. You smiled slightly and thanked him.
“Here, let me help you,”
The ghost offered, his hands going up to grab the basket. Before you could react, his hand grazed yours and held onto it. You gulped, hoping Hua Cheng didn’t send someone to keep an eye on you. You looked up at the ghost, a sweet smile still planted on your face. You could see a hint of lust in his eyes. The ghost smiled at you, dimples planted on either side of his cheek.
“What’s going on here?”
You froze upon hearing that voice. ‘Oh no’ you thought, ‘I’m fucked’. You could see the Ghost go pale, his hands moving away from yours. You already knew who was standing behind you, a not so happy Hua Cheng. You slowly turn around, meeting the eyes of your husband.
“Darling, who’s this?”
Hua cheng asked, his voice dark and possessive. You gulped, not knowing how to reply. The ghost behind you was in terror. A crowd gathered around the three of you, wanted to know what was happening.
“M-miss, i-is this your h-husband?”
The ghost shook and trembled, regretting he ever spoke to the wife of the ghost king. You didnt respond, only nodding, knowing any word you say will be used against you. Hua Cheng was staring daggers into the poor ghost’s eyes. You clutched onto the fruit basket, waiting for any words to be said.
“Scram,”
Hua Cheng commanded the ghost, not wanting to deal with him. The ghost was quick to run away, leaving you with your very angry husband. You knew Hua Cheng knew the ghost was flirting with you moments before, and you knew he was mad at you for not stopping the flirting.
Hua Cheng grabbed your wrist and dragged you along the streets of Ghost City.
“H-hua Cheng, please don’t tell Xie Lian about this,”
You pleaded with Hua Cheng knowing how Xie Lian will react to the whole situation. Hua Cheng’s grip on your wrist becane tighter, as if a warning for you to not say anything more. The walk back to Paradise manner was dreadful. All you could think of was how Xie Lian was going to react and the consequences to come.
Now, let’s get into your current predicament. You were in the privacy of you and your husbands’ shared bedroom. You were perched over Hua Cheng’s lap, you clothes disregarded on the floor of the bedroom. All that could be heard was the sound of Hua Cheng’s hand landing on your ass and your mewls.
“15!”
You cried, your hands tightly grabbing the robes of Xie Lian who sat beside Hua Cheng and you. His hand was stroking your hair.
“You knew the rules, and yet you still decided to let that ghost flirt with you,”
Xie Lian spoke to you in a disappointed manner. You whined as Hua Cheng’s hand hit you ass for the seventeenth time. You looked at Xie Lian with glossy eyes.
“17! ‘M so sorry!”
you tried to apologize, hoping both your husbands would let you off easy. Hua Cheng only chuckled and continued to spank you. As he continued to spank you, you continued to count, all the way until you got to thirty. During this time, Xie Lian made sure you knew what you had did wrong.
By now, your face was tear streaked. Hua Cheng sat you up on his lap, making you face him. His hand gripped you chin tightly, making you face him.
“Now, what do you say to Gege and me?”
“Sorry for being a bad girl,”
You whimpered, looking into Hua Cheng eyes. Xie Lian looked at you and added.
“And?”
“Thank you for taking the time to put me in my place,”
You feel the tension in the room ease. Hua Cheng smiled and kissed your forehead.
“You’re very welcome, Darling,”

If you answer no, please let me know why, I'm genuinely curious. I don't mean for this to seem like there's one right answer, there isn't, it's just when I post works, I hope to get criticism because I know I'm a flawed writer, and I won't get better if I ignore that. Some people who write fanfiction are absolutely amazing writers, and if they believe that they don't need criticism for their work, then I'm glad that you worked so hard to get there! I just am wired differently. I know a lot of criticism can be seen as hate, and I want to be clear, when I say criticism, I don't mean saying 'this sucks'. I mean an actual look into the work, and pointing out what works, and what doesn't. I would love to get criticism, because it meant my stories were worth thinking about and people think I'm capable of improving.
Anyway I'll focus this post on MXTX authors, because that's the fandom I write in and I want to know what they think specifically

Excerpt of a fic I’d really like to write, “Still in This World”, about Hua Cheng’s mother and her journey in seeking out Hua Cheng and reuniting with her son after 800 years.
// She hands the feeble excuse of a ‘gift’ to the unimpressed ghost in front of her. Two cautious hands hold each end at once—one belonging to her and the other to the crimson supreme.
The cube erupts in an explosion of white light and the air in the room is replaced entirely by its ancient outcry—its declarative discovery.
A blood relation is present.
Ruoye is immediately released and bounds her from shoulders to ankles as butterflies hover threateningly in the air above her. She slumps to the ground, knees hitting the floor with an echoing clack, but pays her new situation no mind, like she hasn’t realizes anything hostile has occurred at all.
Her eyes are wide with emotion, staring only at Hua cheng. Her child. Her child, her child, her child. This man is her child. And oh, she can see it clear as day. She wonders why she ever thought she’d have to bother with that damned cube. No device is stronger than this feeling. No rusty old box could know this fact better than she does as she stares into that single obsidian eye. This is her child.
“…Hong-er.” //
I’m not sure when or if it’ll happen though. I have horrible commitment issues when it comes to writing and I haven’t really written much as of the past few years aside from essays, metas, and persuasive stuff now and then. I used to adore writing stories (or rather, starting stories—again, issues with commitment), but since I began digital art it’s basically just been abandoned entirely.
I’ve always had a huge problem with starting things and then never touching them again once I set my gaze upon a new shiny thing after hitting a slight roadblock with the first thing *laughs awkwardly in unmedicated adhd*.
But I have a lot of ideas for this and it’s definitely something I really want to try hard on. So…..let’s see.
