25. What’s your most popular fanfic?

It depends on how you define popular. Purely from a data perspective, I took a look at my AO3 stats and by most hits and most kudos, it’s a Monk rare-pair (Stottlemeyer/Disher) fic I wrote for Yuletide (a small fandoms fic exchange) lo these many years ago. 

My most book-marked fic is another Yuletide fic, where I wrote an alternate ending for The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. 

Looking at number of comment threads, a bunch of my fics are basically at the same place, although The Dance Lesson, a Hackle fic featuring Maud is technically at the top.

26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?

Ahahahaha. Most of the time I find titling difficult. Since joining tumblr I’ve taken to using lines from poetry as titles far more often. I’ll also use quotes from the source material for the fic, or quotes from other works. Sometimes I will start with a phrase that sort of conveys the feeling I want and keep reworking until it feels right. Sometimes it’s a basic description of something about the fic.

44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?

Laura/Rosemary (Rosemary & Thyme)

@hovercraft79 have talked a lot about how much we’d love this ship to get more attention. These are the leads is a charming and sometimes utterly ridiculous cozy mystery show with two middle-aged ladies who meet by chance and end up running a landscaping business, solving plant mysteries and solving murders together. They banter together! They share a room ALL THE TIME (though sadly there are always two beds). Their skills complement each other! One of them is a university professor & plant pathologist and the other is an ex-cop & enthusiastic and knowledgable amateur gardener. They save each other from bad guys! (For a show that doesn’t actually canonically ship them there are quite a lot of shippy tropes in it.)

Hubblestar (The Worst Witch)

It’s such a lovely ship and I’d be thrilled if there were more of it. Someday, when I have a better grasp on both Julie and Dimity, I’d like to write some full-length Hubblestar-centric fic.

Millie/Jean (Bletchley Circle/Bletchley Circle: San Francisco)

Ahhh, I have so many feelings about these two and I want to get back to writing them, possibly later in the summer or the early fall.

Delenn/Sinclair (Babylon 5) 

I understand why there isn’t much fic for this fandom, let alone this pairing, and in some ways I don’t want there to be a big online presence for this fandom because it’d be too easy to accidentally spoil people for the show that way. This is a show that should absolutely be consumed spoiler free if you can at all manage it. That being said, I adore Delenn and Sinclair and I think there’s a ton of interesting ideas to explore with the two of them, that also involve them as a ship. I also would love some canon-divergent AUs about them.

um, for the fic ask (I tried restraint, didn't work): Hecate and Pippa have to get ordinary jobs, HECATE IN A SOCK (what is this I love it), cheese deli/sommelier, self-care mumbroom, it's a honey holiday (look, I had to), campire au, the witch next door

hecate and pippa have to get ordinary jobs - i think the title is as far as the idea ever got, but it was a very early fic idea i had in september 2019, and basically it was something like,, they are stuck in the Ordinary world for whatever reason, maybe undercover, and have to exist as Ordinary people. like those episodes of star trek probably. colleagues to lovers? who knows? not me bc i didn’t write anything useful down for it

cheese deli/sommelier au - “cheese and wine are meant to go well together—but what if they did not?” hecate is a snarky sommelier and she must work with pippa who is a cheese specialist. they have to find a way of working together without driving each other up the wall. enemies to lovers. there is no writing here just literally an idea because i know virtually nothing about wine and i’m a bit allergic to it

self-care mumbroom - one i started writing and got super distracted from! julie is working at cackle’s and decides hecate needs to spend some more time on self-care and hecate hates it. based on an irl ordinary book for witches

vampire au - some kind of vampire au i had an idea for way back when!! one of my first few fic ideas in october of 2019. pippa is a vampire and hecate is an historian investigating her. i,, guess it had flashbacks to the 1920s with her in fashionable parts of london with society lesbians. uhh not sure what i was going to do with it but needed way more planning than just a few words typed in caps like “SEANCE” and “OH NO a bloodlust” because i don’t remember what that means. it started off life as a thirsty drabble in my october drabble challenge but then never evolved

the witch next door - modern au, where hecate and pippa are neighbours! both are witches and neither wants the other to find out. i started off with a random plot point but didn’t know where to take it from there so it’s just a 200-word fragment no one will ever see

it’s a honey holiday - sequel to my honeybroom fic, a taste of honey. hecate goes on her first holiday ever since her confinement was lifted, with jennifer honey of course!!

hecate in a sock - this was going to be a christmas fic. not sure of ship(s) but hecate was going to be shrunk at one point and put into a stocking. that’s as far as i got before my brain imploded with feelings???

ordinary pippa, magical hecate - i came up with this one after watching the gloriously awful christmas romcom a knight before christmas. it would follow a similar premise in that pippa would discover hecate wandering around, completely baffled by everything around her, and try to help her adjust to ordinary life. it never went beyond a few random notes tbh bc it didn’t feel as in character for hecate as i would like

I'm so intrigued and excited by so many of your titles! It's hard to pick just one, but i'll go with "i may have made it rain (please forgive me)"

dated 2nd december 2019, this was in my one-shots folder (possibly bc i forgot to move it to my drabbles folder) as a title with absolutely no content in the folder! it’s a lyric from Everytime by Britney and i’m fairly sure i intended it to be a hicsqueak drabble sequence based on the song. it’s a song i strongly connect to both hecate and pippa after their whole Thing!!

i think i didn’t make anything of it because i had other things to write and at the time i was very Focused as a writer. not so much any more 😂

A secretly married hicsqueak fic!! I need that in my life <3

oop, this title was actually “secretly married hecate”. from what i remember, hecate was not married to a canon character. the fic was about her being unhappily married and someone (don’t remember the ship) getting her out of the situation. if i’d written anything down for it further that would have really helped, but i think it could work for any ship!

Trope mashup: Blind Date + Its not you it’s my enemies + hicsqueak

It’s the 30s. The 1830s. Hecate Hardbroom is the daughter of a gentleman. From her childhood sweetheart, Pippa Pentangle, she had to part ways, on suspicions from her nosy mother, a good two decades ago. One of her friends, a Miss Drill, is a notorious matchmaker; bored of Miss Hardbroom’s inclination to decline every single prospect she introduces her to at social evenings, she promises one last woman, and vows to never speak another word on the matter if Miss Hardbroom does not fall madly in love with this woman.

Hecate prepares gloomily for the ball, and arrives without much hope. She is utterly overwhelmed, however, by the appearance of Miss Drill making a turn about the room with the lovely Miss Pentangle, only bloomed more beautifully with age. Miss Pentangle had moved far away on account of her father’s business, but has just moved back into her family’s former estate after her brother took over from their deceased father. Miss Drill is put out that she barely has to introduce them.

They catch up on the years apart, laughing at the old times, and sharing meaningful looks. After enduring their respective dance partners, both realise that they are still in love. 

Miss Hardbroom tells her all the ways they cannot possibly be together—but is convinced by just the one reason Miss Pentangle gives her to stay.

too many. at least 30.

one of the wildest is an enemies-to-lovers restaurant au where hecate is a sommelier and pippa is an artisan cheesemaker. the tagline is “cheese and wine are meant to go well together... but what if they did not?”

it intensified bc i saw that sommeliers can have this little necklace thing they wear around their neck called a tastevin, and it looks like hecate’s pocket watch

i will probably never write it but it’s the greatest idea i’ve ever had (not)

“don’t use the word said” and “never use -ly adverbs”

15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

hmm, to me this question is like, which would i self-indulgently love to watch as a series vs which would work well in that format. i think A Clock With No Hands hits both because it’s PLOT and DRAMZ and LOVE and CATS. and i need to see pippa pentangle on a horse

16. If you only could write one pairing for the rest of your life, which pairing would it be?

i’ve only been writing fanfic for under 8 months but probably,, hicsqueak. it’s kinda what my brain defaults to and most of my headcanons are about them. one is hard and the other is soft and it gives a lot of feelings for me

i was very tempted to say honeybroom, but i would prefer that they share a world more closely so when i play with the setting etc. it is more dramatic a shift

32. How do you feel about smut?

copied from a post i made last october bc i said it pretty eloquently then and nothing has changed :’)

reading smut gives me a whole bunch of confusing feelings that invariably end up in suicidal thoughts (even that one time when i thought i was okay) so i have to skip when reading fic, especially when i’m reading on public transport where i’m more at risk. thank u to all the writers who put cw for smut in each chapter so i’m not suddenly Hit by it (i get that this might be kinda spoilery though)

i imagine writing it would be much the same. and honestly hard to read bc i don’t personally have any good experiences of sex acts and consider myself ace/maybe demi i’m really not sure

one day i might try but it’s not something i can see myself consistently doing bc it’s not why i write fic

i write about sex by not writing about sex. the build up of trust, explicit consent in non-sexual contexts, becoming comfortable with each other, sensuality about non-sexual things, tender moments, heated passion, maybe even fade to black - these are all ways i can get around the fact that i’m too Damaged to actually venture beyond circling around the issue (but this is not to say that this is the superior way of writing about sex; it’s just the way i cope with my Trauma)

i really respect people who can write smut and who have no qualms about putting it up on the internet for people to enjoy but that ain’t me

i often am Mused by songs, like it’ll hit me when i hear a lyric or a particular note progression and feel ship feels then i’ll be like “i wish to capture the ESSENCE of white flag by dido in a hicsqueak fic”

aLSO really trashy romcoms like The Knight Before Christmas that spawned my ordinary Pippa/magical Hecate idea that i’ll probably never write bc it’s awful. but also. maybe good,

29. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

The Language of Tea Leaves by CCNSurvivor, although i don’t know what i would write!! it’s just one of my faves. i already was writing about hecate and her tea obsession before i read this and was like :shook pikachu: when it was brought to my attention

The World Unwraps Itself to You, Again and Again by @nike-sga bc again, one of my faves!! with a different musical maybe? idk if i could do it justice
