     “ You’ve gotten better, but you still have a lot of improving to do as well. ” Their lessons had drawn to a close. With the setting sun painting a  BEAUTIFUL  sea of orange and red, the master thief was running through the day’s report. There was no paper and pen— nothing at all to stand in for a clipboard. Just a dedicated bullet point list constructed in his  MIND.  With one hand at his hip and the other moving to pluck a stray twig from her hair, he continued to give a rundown of her performance  WITHOUT  missing a beat. “ You can cover your tracks well, but you’re still thinking about it too hard and it’s slowing you down. Remember that  EVERY  second counts out there. These things need to come naturally to you. ”

          A brief pause to gauge her response. He was supposed to be her teacher. That meant holding  NOTHING  back in his criticism or instruction. Yet it proved some difficulty for him at times when he held such a soft spot for women. Not to say he’d dial back unless she explicitly asked him to, but he didn’t want to make her  CRY either.

     “ Your thinking affects your hearing too. I  SHOULDN’T  have been able to sneak up on you as often as I did. It’s good to think ahead but you’re not there yet. You focus too much on one action that you neglect your surroundings... But you’re still  BETTER  than before. ”

        It was truly nothing but a gaze he couldn’t help; much less explain even to himself. Curiosity, perhaps, like a child; like the child he never really was allowed to be  ( not that he didn’t have Dr. Grace Trevelyan-Grey to thank for what little bit of childhood he had had, mind you, but, well, his PAST... Don’t go there, Grey, he scolded within ),  let alone would allow himself to show to the world existed at all within himself; in fact, what little  b e w i l d e r m e n t  formed within his erratic mind he forbade to show as anything more than the annoyance that cursed within his veins whenever any short form of control escaped from the tips of his self-thought monstruous fingertips.   “ What the hell is this, then? ”   He wondered out loud, more for the benefit of the other than his own; so that, perhaps, they would find the previous silence as the hint of encouragement needed to explain, more so than the query itself became.

Did Garlath defend you from mysterious giants or something? Giants that are from outside of Xadia? Because that would be hella rad

Giants from across the sea... or under it... do sound mysterious! I’ve never met a giant. Garlath defended Xadia from many things, though I don’t recall any tales of alien giants. Unless you count the heartpoison dragon. Or the Fairymount. 

Do you have giants where you’re from? I don’t want to assume the size restrictions on beings in your world.

Hey guys! So I had a really lazy morning, spent it just kinda half asleep and being cozy in my bed.  I’m up now and working on a coffee and cookies and homemade rice pudding (so healthy, yall) and once I’m finished that and whatever I decide to watch while I do that, I’ll be around to work on some more replies.

          “ Do you really think so ? ”

     He gave a careful blink looking into the mirror. The face that stared back at him was surely his own, just completely transformed. Everything from his hair to his clothes was pulled from a separate wardrobe. A tilt of the head that way, then the other. The wig was surely staying in place and the mascara seemed to have dried now. It was one part that Arsène had always loathed to do as he was uncomfortable bringing a small brush close to his eyes. ( He really wondered how a woman did so with ease. ) The rest of the makeup was just about done, save for debating whether he needed more rouge or not. Nonetheless, he shone a smile at himself with dusty pink lips and gave the brunette curls of the wig a playful bounce. “ I’m supposed to be an innocent looking noble daughter, so I tried to take it easy. ”

     With a sly grin he turned attention to the girl, hands smoothing out the skirt of his dress and voice flawlessly taking on the tone of a young woman. It was only one of many he’d copied for use in his disguises. “ The pink isn’t too bold is it ? ”

arsene, is it technically identity theft if the person is already dead?

     This was a  CRUEL  twist of fate or some such thing of that nature. For sweet, innocent Cardia to question him on a matter that he had indeed done in his career as a thief. It was made all the worse with the simple notion that she hadn’t the  SLIGHTEST  clue of it either. Nobody did. It was almost enough to make him break into a nervous sweat.

          With but a bit of laughter to play it off, he answered. “ Yes, Cardia. It very well still counts. Don’t tell me  YOU  were thinking of posing as a dead person. ” Allow him to be a tad hypocritical. She was going to be doing no such thing if he could help it.

Clink, clink, clink. The sound of metal being fiddled with -- before an ever so brittle snap and a near-frustrated sigh. She's been at this for a while, but Cardia won't be opening any locks any time soon with how she keeps breaking her tools due to applying too much force.

    The sound of tools repeatedly being  BROKEN  had called his attention for a while now. At first it went ignored— perhaps Impey was fiddling with some new invention and having a rough time. For even a genius engineer wasn’t excluded from running into  TOUGH spots just as a scientist needed to experience  HUNDREDS  of failures before a successful product came to be. But now it had persisted long enough for him to know it wasn’t the resident red head. He was drawn to the sound and the source was none other than whom he’d expected.

         A smile rested on his lips in observation. Arms crossed, one foot over the other as he leaned against the door’s frame. ‘ Ah, that’s no good. It’ll— ’

                                                   ——  S N A P !

         However, his smile only grew. She was just trying her  BEST.

    He cleared his throat to announce his presence before speaking. Calmly, ever so kindly. “ If you have to force it like  THAT then you’re going about it wrong. Remember, when you’re picking a lock, you need to find the spots that click into place  BEFORE you can turn the lock. ” With experienced ease, Arsène took the practice lock from the girl and slipped his own tools out from one of his pockets. “ You shouldn’t be running into all that resistance and if you’re getting  THIS much bend, ” a purposeful misstep, “ then ease up. Pull back and try finding the springs again. Maybe even a different placement. But— ”

                         CLICK !   The lock was open.

         “ It  IS  a bit of an art, so it’s okay not to get it right away. All things come with practice. Now, do you need another set of tools too ? ”
