St. Moritz has been a famous health resort in Engadine since the 19th century. At first, it was only frequented by spa guests, before the village developed into a high alpine sports centre, and for a time it was a playground for the rich and famous. There’s still some of that element present but not as in its hey day of the 70s. For nine months of the year it’s just another picturesque village in the gorgeous Swiss Alps, with Lake St. Moritz lying at its heart.

Crucially it is quietly forgotten by the outside world. Residents can breathe and go about their daily chilled out lives. For those precious nine months it was great to hike and ski there as my boarding school wasn’t too far away from getting there. But the other four months of the year, the high season, it gets flood with skiers and altogether more showy crowd.

The frozen surface of the lake, which can only be described as a desert of snow, now serves as a symbol of the resort itself. From nine months of natural bliss to four months of chaos and madness. Every time the ice lends its surface to polo tournaments, horse races, and the wealthy and beautiful make the pilgrimage down the mountains from their grand hotels, St. Moritz seems to transform. St. Moritz’s newest ‘gimmick’ for the past three years or so has been to serve the International Concours of Elegance St. Moritz - or The ICE St. Moritz - as a kind of classic car museum with an adventurous character.

Since the first ever The ICE St. Moritz in 2019, historic rally cars have been exhibited to the sports car-crazy public on the opening day, before demonstrating their horsepower on the ice racetrack on the second day of the event. However, the fact that The ICE is taking place on Lake St. Moritz, of all places, is no coincidence. In 1985, a group of Scottish and British sportsmen drove their vintage Bentleys to St. Moritz to celebrate the centenary of the Cresta Run (an eccentric and high spirited toboggan amateur race). As part of the festivities, they drove their cars on the racecourse across the frozen Lake St. Moritz.

This year, however, the ICE St. Moritz evolved slightly differently. For the first time, the event was held on two days: Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February. On the first day, the lake was transformed into an open-air museum, where the jury evaluated the cars on display from an aesthetic perspective. Then, on the second day, the actual race took place, whereupon the jury evaluated the classic cars from a performance perspective.

This year there were five category winners. In the ‘Open Wheels’ category, the 1958 Maserati 420M/58 “Eldorado” held its own. Meanwhile, the ‘Barchettas on the Lake’ category crowned the Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II from 1955 as the winner. My personal favourite, the aforementioned Ferrari 250 Testarossa ‘Lucybelle’ emerged as the winner in the ‘Le Mans 100’ category. As expected, Lancia Strato’s HF Zero of 1970 came out on top in the ‘Concept Cars & One Offs’ category. Last but not least, judges crowned the 1958 Bentley S1 Continental Drophead Coupé as the winner of the ‘Queens on Wheels’ category.

The evening gala took place at Badrutts Palace, which towers over the city like a castle with its high stone walls. In the stimulating semi-darkness and under shimmering candlelight, riders, collectors, enthusiasts, the public and media from all over the world celebrated the conclusion of one of the most anticipated competitions in the Engadine. Overall it’s spectacular fun and contrary to what one might believe it really does draw the car enthusiast crowd rather than the snob mob. It’s a very chilled event and bags of fun.

Emmanuel Katto Uganda | The largest lake in Africa and Uganda's jewel: Lake Victoria

It’s an honor to highlight the natural splendours that grace our stunning country in my capacity as a Ugandan journalist Emmanuel Katto. Lake Victoria is one such treasure that is dear to every Ugandan's heart. This magnificent body of water is not just the biggest lake in Africa; it also represents Uganda's way of life, source of income, and breathtaking natural beauty. 

A natural marvel and lifeline 

Lake Victoria is not your typical lake. It is not only the largest lake in Africa, but also the second-largest freshwater lake in the world, covering an area of over 68,800 square km. It is a gem that all East Africa shares because its coastlines extend into Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. 

Lake Victoria is a lifeline for Uganda. It sustains innumerable villages that rely on its waterways for transportation, agriculture, and fishing. The abundance of fish in the lake, notably the well-known Nile perch, sustains a sizeable component of Uganda's economy and helps the country's food security. 

A Biodiversity Hub 

In addition to its vastness, Lake Victoria is a center for biodiversity. Its waters are abundant with different fish species, and the marshes around are home to a wide variety of birds and other animals. In my capacity as a journalist, I've had the honor of chronicling the lake's natural wonders, conservation initiatives, and a delicate balancing act between them. 

Cultural Relevance 

The lake is intricately woven with Uganda's cultural heritage. There are several traditional villages along its beaches that follow traditions and rituals centred around Lake Victoria. Beyond just being important from an economic and environmental standpoint, it also contributes to our culture. 

Confrontations and Conservation 

Lake Victoria has both richness and beauty, but it also has problems. Environmental problems including pollution, invasive species, and overfishing are serious risks to the ecosystem's fragile balance. I've made it my mission as a journalist to bring attention to these issues, create awareness, and emphasize the value of sustainable practices in preserving this natural treasure. 

A Word of Hope 

Lake Victoria is still a representation of resiliency in spite of the difficulties. Governments, businesses, and communities are collaborating to protect the lake's long-term health and vitality. As a journalist from Uganda, I find it encouraging to see how committed and passionate individuals working on these projects are.

Lake Victoria is more than simply a body of water; it is a representation of life, harmony, and Uganda's eternal beauty. A few years have passed since Margaret and Bess met and worked together to solve a few murders. They are in love and have just purchased their own home. As they are hoping to settle in and christen their new living space, they are less than thrilled to have Bess’s Aunt Hattie show up wanting to move in with them. Tensions rise, Hattie does something they cannot forgive, and they are off to find her instead of settling in as they had hoped to.

What I liked:

* Bess Campbell: Focused in living a positive life, empathetic, open, honest, caring, good friend, has a difficult relationship with her family, loves Margaret, nurturer

* Margaret Gale: protective, strong personality, closed off, controlled, dark, snarky,  softer with Bess, worried about her health, loves Bess

* Aunt Hattie: annoying, brilliant, pushy, bends the rules, journalist-writer, in a relationship with Len

* Len: driver, met Hattie through a yorkipoo dog club, strong, really likes Hattie,

* The way Hattie grew on me and also how Bess and Margaret began to see her differently

* How the death-murder of Nick Mantiatis was solved

* Being able to thoroughly dislike the Pyrite Center that was more cult than anything else – also hoping Karma would hit hard for a few of the henchmen and “gurus”

* That Margaret, Bess, and Hattie came through alright in the end

* Hattie not deferring to Bess’s mother’s wishes

* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing

* The way the story ended

What I didn’t like:

* Who and what I was meant not to like

* Thinking about how easily Kevin and his henchmen were able to do evil things for money

Jacksonville to New Orleans

I caught the Skyway, a much ridiculed little electric monorail type affair

to get me to the Greyhound Bus Station in Jacksonville

to catch my bus to New Orleans, I’d be going through the night.

I remembered back to all the nightbusses I’d rode in South America and thought: ‘of course I can do this’.

It turned out to be one of the worst bus trips I’ve been on in my travels.

The Greyhound Bus Station in Jacksonville was alright, clean, safe, even with a small restaurant.

I looked at the departure list, it was hardly hectic.

There were a couple of departures every day to New York, everything else was a departure to another point in Florida and the frequency was limited.

I’m struck by the big number of staff around the place, yet they only one person 'checking in’ bags.

When I checked my bag, they put a tag on it and promptly gave the bag back to me.

I’d have to put it in the hold of the bus myself. 

My 13.30 bus pulls off just before 14.00, I’m in no hurry though.

Our 10-year old wonky wheeled bus is on the road, past pencil thin trees that are planted as if by a stylist, they’re in neat, ever so neat rows.

We pass Baker Prison, then Columbia Prison, they seem big affairs.

In Lake City a young guy with a clear plastic bag for a suitcase to carry all his clothes gets off the bus. Is he just out of prison?

In Tallahassee we have to change bus and wait an hour. Not impressed by the small grocery store in the station I go in search of a 7/11 or whatever.

I walk around Tallahassee in the 91F/32C heat of the late afternoon.

After not being able to find a store I make my way back to the bus station.

This bus takes us to Mobile, where we have to change busses, in the middle of the night.

We got to Mobile late, so we only have to wait 2 hours.

It’s after 01.00 and I feel like sleeping.

What kind of a person dreams up a schedule that would inflict this kind of unwarranted pain on people!

The bus gets in to New Orleans just before 06.00.

I’m remembering articles I read about New Orleans residents that were forced to move to other states and even across the States, on account of havoc wreaked by the hurricane. 

For some reason there are big old dumpy dumper trucks flying around the city centre all the time.

Eventually I find the bus to take me the 8 miles distance to my hotel.

I didn’t want to stay that far out of the city, but it was the end of Mardi Gras and the city was still busy.
