Enneagram Head Centre
The Thinking centre:
concerned with:
Security, certainty, predictability, safety, opportunities, mental faculties, to minimize fear by envisioning, preparing and planning
When connected with this centre, can experience: Imagination, understanding, discernment, wisdom, comprehension
• ego often traps the mind; leading it to construct stories and fantasies which can result in anxiety , 'cold energy'
• Correlated with the prefrontal cortex and cerebral cortex
• desire to know that we're safe now and will be in the future too.
• 'The mind is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master' - Robin Sharma
• Future-oriented
'What's going to happen to me?
'How am I going to survive?'
'How can I prepare myself to keep bad things from happening?'
'How do I move forward in life?'
How do I cope?'
'where am I?'
'how does all this fit together?'
• Main emotions are fear and anxiety
• Develops as the third stage after belly and heart centre
outwardly may seem clear, convinced, and clever; inwardly may feel isolated, confused and meaningless

Enneagrammatic Alchemical Symbols
Upon reading this write-up made by RafflesiaArnoldii (kendrixtermina) I was inspired to symbolically represent the Enneagram types in an alchemy-esque manner.
Centres of Intelligence & Underlying Fixations
Gut / Impulsive → Anger
Heart / Emotional → Shame
Head / Mental → Dread
Either fixation can manifest in a three-fold manner:
Exteriorised { anger / shame / dread }
Centralised { anger / shame / dread }
Interiorised { anger / shame / dread }
Note. In hindsight, my symbols for 3 centres of intelligence are akin to how 4 congitive functions are represented in Socionics (〇 for sensation, △ for intuition, □ for thinking/logic, ∟ for feeling/ethics).
Object Relation Triads
Rejection / Transactionalist / Relationist → “Sulphuric”
Attachment / Pragmatist / Adaptive → “Saline”
Frustration / Idealist / Utopian → “Mercurial”
Hornevian Triads
Assertive / Aggressive → “Idic”
Withdrawn → “Egoic”
Dutiful / Compliant → “Super-Egoic”
Note. This is based on the theory of scrambling of centres. In hexad types (1/4/7 & 2/5/8), the secondary centre is in service of the primary, whilst the tertiary is (mostly) taken out of the picture; in triangle types (3/6/9), it’s their primary centre that is walled off from the secondary & tertiary centres.
Harmonic Triads
Positive Outlook / Reframing → “Sublimating”
Competency / Procedural → “Dissolving”
Reactivity / Expressing → “Præcipitating”
Note. Out of the multitude of alchemical processes to represent the harmoning triads I have chosen the following three: sublimation, dissolution, & præcipitation. This was done on the basis of their metaphorical meanings that are in common usage but which have been ultimately derived from their respective primary (al)chemical significations.
to sublimate (← Latin sublīmō “to raise, elevate”)
(alchemy & chemistry) to change directly from the solid to the vapour state without passing through the liquid state
(psychology) to divert the expression of (an instinctual desire or impulse) from its unacceptable base or primitive form to one that is considered more positive or socially or culturally acceptable
Types 2/7/9 cope with an adverse situation by shifting away from it, reframing it into sth positive, habitually searching for silver linings, &c. Thus, they sublimate.
to præcipitate (← Latin præcipitō “throw down, hurl down, throw headlong”)
(alchemy & chemistry) to cause vapour to condense and fall or deposit; to separate a substance out of a liquid solution or suspension into solid form
(common usage) to bring about a certain condition, especially abruptly, sudddenly, and quickly; to fall headlong or act with violent or unwise speed
Types 4/6/8 have an immediate, intense, flaring response or even an outburst to an adverse situation. Thus, they præcipitate.
to dissolve (← Latin dissolvō “to loosen up, break apart”)
(alchemy & chemistry) to disintegrate into a solution by immersion into a liquid or gas
(obsolete usage) to solve; to resolve; to clear up
Types 1/3/5 tend to cope by finding rational, logical solutions. Verbs solve, dissolve, & resolve share the same root. The image that comes to mind is this: analysing the situation at hand (i.e., dissolution) and coming up with the most suitable course of action to deal therewith (i.e., (re)solution).
Constructing an overall symbol (ligature) for each Enneagram type
It is possible to construct a cumulative symbol for each type by combining their respective triadic glyphs into one ligature.
Thus, the Hornevian Triad glyphs for each type would become the base to which the rest of the glyphs would be adjoined.
Then, for hexad types, one would append the respective Object Relation Triad glyph (sulphur for 2/5/8 or mercury for 1/4/7) on top of the base; for triangle types, the salt glyph (for 3/6/9) would instead go underneath.
As for the respective Harmonic Triad glyphs, those would go below everything: the dissolution glyph (for 1/3/5) would be inverted for the purposes of visual congruity; the glyphs for sublimation (for 2/7/9) & præcipation (for 4/6/8) would be used as they are.
Instinctual variants
It is also possible to represent the dominant instinct by adding one of the following to the overall symbol for any Enneagram type:
[ * ] Self-preservation instinct
[ ** ] Sexual instinct
[ *** ] Social instinct
Note. These can be either asterisks or small dots and can be added onto any side of the main symbol. To represent all of the instincts from the dominant to the blind-spot, one can simply stack the asterisks or dots on top of each other accordingly.

Place yourself within a circle of light each day.
Visualize the light as coming from within your very centre.
See the light pouring out from the heart and surrounding you.
This light comes not from an external source but from within you.
Realize that all are one.

People rightfully talk about how devastating romantic solavellan is, but I think platonic solavellan can also be extremely devastating.
Like, my main Inquisitor was a Dalish rogue. She had no experience of magic, or the Fade, or anything like that before accidentally stumbling into the whole Corypheus ritual thing. Solas saved her life. He was by her side when she was confused and scared and trying to figure out what the hell had happened to her while all these humans were accusing her of a terrible crime she didn't commit. He helped her learn how to use the mark to seal the rifts; helped her understand what her new abilities were and that they were needed. When the humans began to call her the herald of a divine figure she didn't worship, Solas was the one person she could turn to when it all started to get a bit much (my Inquisitor was very much a Life of Brian-esque "I'm not the Herald of Andraste!" type). The conversation they have in the snow after everyone gathers together to sing "The Dawn Will Come" is such an important moment. Two elves, in the midst of a struggle fundamentally elven but that human beliefs had managed to co-opt.
Solas was her mentor. Her friend. Someone who opened her eyes to the vastness of the world; who complicated things she thought she understood. And she listened to him with an open mind and heart in turn. She was living proof that his unpleasant encounters with the Dalish were not universal. She had accepted her mortality, her lack of magic, because she knew no other way to be, and it probably broke his heart that he knew that HE was the one who had taken it from her. idk I'm just obsessed with all the dialogue that implies that the Inquisitor, through befriending Solas, changed a lot of his opinions about the modern world (modern elves especially), but that it wasn't enough to make him accept the world as it was in the end
idk man. platonic solavellan. really looking forward to seeing how it all plays out in veilguard.
#dragon age#dragon age inquisition#solavellan#inquisitor lavellan#solas#i've played both romantic and platonic versions of solavellan and they both break my heart#but the platonic version has such a special place in my heart#my inquisitor was just some kid#she was in way over her head and solas was the closest thing she could find to her culture and people#in a very human-centred world#dorian was her bestie but solas was her mentor#the solas confrontation with high friendship at the end of trespasser GETS ME every time#i'm so excited the inquisitor will be returning in veilguard#i NEED that narrative resolution dammit!!

Enneagram Heart Centre
The Feeling centre:
concerned with emotional connection, subjective feelings, intersubjective relationships
allows self-love and unconditional love towards others, openness, compassion, empathy, joy, forgiveness, intimacy
social relationships, 'warm energy', less tangible
can allow us to be truthful, authentic and introspective
past-oriented, next to develop after the gut centre (when infant has began to establish a sense of autonomy and boundary between others and themselves)
linked to limbic areas of the brain
Desires attention, validation, mirroring and recognition; 'I want others to like me/how are they feeling towards me? Am I worthy of love?'
'Who am I with?'
'Will they like me?'
outwardly may seem self-confident, harmonious and sanguine, but inwardly feel empty, incapable, sad and ashamed.
Arises from having to develop a false self-image in order to compensate for not feeling valued or loved for their true self
As babies, we don't have the capacity for introspection and didn't have a sense of self, thus we can only figure out who we are through others' eyes
most common emotion: shame/humiliation
• When out of touch with this centre, we may present a false-image, be overly dramatic, hysterical, emotional, moody, deceitful, people-please, overly flattering, become too dependent on others or feel estranged, overly-sensitive
• dysfunction: loneliness, deficiency, emptiness
• compulsion to connect with others whilst also comparing with others as a way to validate own self-worth
“The heart centre is about authenticity. What authenticity really means is a quality of the unguarded, vulnerable heart; the heart in the relation.” - Christo van Staden.

"Heya Gylka, watcha got there?" Asked Max, leaning down to eye level of the youngling.
"Heart!" chirped the youngling boy, holding out a handmade heart made of paper and decorated so sweetly and nicely.
"Wow, I really like it! You did an awesome job, your one of the best cutters in class."
"For you."
"Me? I get to keep it?" the youngling nodded. "Aw, thanks bud." the human ruffled the fur of the boy before he ran off back to the craft table.
A minute later he came back this time with small piece paper and a marker. He handed them to the human.
"Draw."
"Draw what?" he asked grabbing the paper and marker
"...a heart!"
"Alright." once drawn he gave it back to the child who ran back to the table. Later he came back with a cut out heart that was even more nicely decorated than the last.
"For you!" the youngling beamed.
.
"Woah what's with all the hearts and circles?" laughed Kim looking at the mountain of paper circles and hearts decorated sweetly.
"Gylka just won't stop making them for me. It's so cute though, he runs up to me with paper, asks me to draw a heart or circle and then cuts it out and decorates it before giving it to me."
"Aww cute!" the human cooed.
They continued to walk to the dorms before Kim stops.
"...Gylka? Gylka was the one who made you all of those?"
"Yeah."
"Did he...do anything while giving it to you?"
"...y'know he did actually. He knelt down on both knees while giving it to me."
"...oh my god this is too cute!" squealed Kim.
"What?! What's too cute?"
"He's proposing to you!"
"...what!" He ran up to her grabbing her shoulders. "What?!!"
"Its...its custom for his species...to-to, oh my stomach hurts." she wheezes.
"Finish the sentence Kim!"
"It's custom for his species to have their future spouse draw or tell how they want to be proposed to. If they can meet and go beyond their expectations then they're officially engaged.
Usually it's an item, the ring if you will, that is drawn for the pursuer. This shows that they will be a very caring and attentive spouse who will put in the time and effort to give you want you want in the relationship. Hearts are for love and the heart of the proposer and circles mean long life."
"...so he has a crush on me?"
"Yes."
"...that is so cute...Kim how am I gonna turn him down?! He's so sweet and adorable!"
"I doubt anything will happen more than this. Just play along."
"Yeah, yeah your right. It's just a kid crush."
..
*4 days later*
"Human Max do you know who is Gylka's promised one?" asked Gylka's mother
"...I'm sorry?"
"His promised one...I believe you humans call it a fiancée?"
"...oh no."
"What is the matter??"
"...what will you do with his...promised one?"
"Simply explain what it means to them and their parents and get in touch for playdates. Let things run its course without any pressure."
"Oh thank you! Okay they're right here. Its me. I'm his 'promised one'"
"...I was wondering who was this 'giant old sunny boy' he was talking about!" she laughs. "I will talk to him."
"Thank you, although I am flattered."
They both laughed.
#a kid kept asking me to do what Gylka does#draw a heart or circle or star then he cut it out and decorated it and gave it to me#he did this all morning and eventually did this thing where he kept kneeling while giving it me which made me think of a proposal#and bam more alien folklore!#thanks to the kid whose name is actually Max#humans are space orcs#humans are space oddities#the adventures of kim and max running a space child centre
