Week 3 Reflection
Last Tuesday, we were assigned to our groups. My group met on Google Hangouts that night to discuss what mobile application we wanted to use for our assignment. During class, we went through quite a few applications, but our progress was pretty stagnant as none of us could agree on an application. With that in mind, we decided to take a break and reconvene at night.
The break gave us time to recharge and rest. During then, each of us came up with more ideas. I looked through my phone to play with all of my applications, trying to see if there were any UX problems that I faced. I found that there were some applications that I considered essential, but had multiple UX issues. Then, I realised that despite how bad the interface can be, users will still use it as long as it is functional. As we become more familiar with the application, we learn to ignore parts of the app that we don't use and only see what we need. In my case, the MyTransport app was a great example of this case. In its defence, the application's interface has improved drastically since its revamp. Before, I would ignore all the other icons and only click the 'Bus Arrival Time' function. As a user, I grew accustomed to the application's interface and learnt to pay little attention to all the other buttons on the menu. However, as I took a good look into the application, I also realised that the application had many other functionalities that I had not used or been aware of. The revamped interface of the MyTransport app utilised the infamous Hamburger icon on the top left of the screen. It made it easier for users to forget about the features in that menu as it was out of sight. I felt that this application had a robust functionality, but its usage and exposure were heavily restricted because of its UI.
Before vs After
Tumblr media
During our meeting, I suggested MyTransport app to my other group mates. We took turns in sharing about some applications that we use often but had problems with. We considered applications like Healthy365 and Grab. After a long deliberation about different applications, we settled on Healthy365 as we felt that the application had a massive user base and the most problematic UI. We then split our workloads and set internal deadlines to accomplish them.
I am grateful that my team members are very proactive and enthusiastic about our projects. Discussions were well-paced and we were quite productive. One thing that surprised me was when one of the group members created a project tracker for the group, including specific deadlines and task objectives. It ensured that the group's progress will be on track and that we will not lag behind any deadlines. I think that my group will use the tracker well and work together efficiently for the remaining weeks.

Blog Post 10: Endless self-tracking & self-surveillance (Soon Poh Suan)
In Crawford’s Our metrics, ourselves: A Hundred years of self-tracking from the weight scale to the wrist wearable device, Crawford explored the historical account of the weight scale, by looking at its changing role as it shifted locations from offices to streets and to homes. This symbolized the normalization of technology and internalization of self-surveillance. Next, Crawford also analyzed the advertising campaigns of both weight scales and wearable devices and realized the association of self-knowledge and better lives connected to these external measurement of data. It is often to see advertisements emphasizing on the relationship between numerical accuracy, truth and self-knowledge; with better data, the better quality of self-knowledge and so a ‘better human’ is created. The sense of empowerment and control promised by these wearable devices or technologies of self-measurement reflected constant monitoring, self-surveillance and power over one’s body. With that, Crawford also used a case study of FitBit in courts to explore how wearable devices have advanced its role as a legal witness. These historical, semiotic and legal perspectives gave a comprehensive understanding of the tensions for a person’s desire for self-knowledge and the loss of privacy or control over the data.
With that, I strongly resonated with his perspective that the full use of these data is always out of sight to the user. Given the sense of discomfort and uncertainty that human bodies were being tracked, documented and rendered meaningfully through a device that records a wealth of data for the parent company, users have lost the agency to control the number of third parties gaining access to the data. For instance, the controversial use of contact tracing application, TraceTogether, in assisting the police force to investigate serious crimes have faced immense public backlashes for extending these TraceTogether data beyond contact tracing purposes. Furthermore, while these wearable devices promise to give the user a better self and better life through a mediated self-knowledge, I found these promises relatively disturbing as it normalizes the use of technology and capitalizes economic values on people’s curiosity to track the conditions of their own body. For instance, the Healthy365 smartphone application is an example of gamification and wearable devices. By syncing with a wearable tracking device, users are required to self-track their active lifestyle by participating and completing challenges to get rewards. The application also collects and gives an activity summary of the number of steps and total duration of Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA), such as brisk walking, running and bicycling.
Beyond tracking the physical movement of human bodies, the increasing reliance on technological devices to track one’s heartbeat rate is also equally daunting. For instance, Love Alarm is a popular Netflix series that revolves around a technology that enabled users to discover their love by notifying whether someone within the range of 10 metres has romantic feelings for them. While it is a fictional story, I feel that it provides a hindsight to humans’ increasing reliance on technology and wearable devices to manage various aspects of their lives, even for their own romance or emotional feelings which is often seen as immeasurable. Therefore, with these various examples, I questioned whether these data collected ultimately benefit the user or the parent company itself.

Assignment 2: Post 1
Our group has brainstormed a few applications that will fit in the criteria that this assignment requires. The applications are Healthy365, Spotify and LumiNUS.
Healthy365 is a health and diet tracking mobile application brought about by Singapore government’s Health Promotion Board. It tracks the users fitness patterns and provides overviews and data to help the user to transit into a healthier lifestyle. We chose this application initially as the interface was ridden with unintuitive and inefficient layouts and controls, which dampens the user experience and discourages extensive and regular usage of the application.
Another application that we considered is Spotify, which is a global media service provider from Sweden. Its music streaming service serves as a platform for artists to share their craft and for listeners to listen to them, but we will be focusing on the latter’s user experience in the mobile and web application. Even though it is tailored well, both versions of applications lack good classification and parsing of music tracks that hampers the user experience, such as limited ways to find the music track amidst a sea of playlists.
Lastly, we also considered the LumiNUS, which is the local education resource platform for the National University of Singapore. LumiNUS has web and mobile interfaces for students’ use, but most students do not opt for the mobile application due to its clunky user interface as well as unintuitive process flow. Moreover, inconsistency is rampant as design and flow of the elements on the web version do not correspond accordingly to that of the mobile application. It is also not aesthetic pleasing as well as having problems with interface scaling for the web version when opening with a mobile web browser.
Utimately, our group has chosen the LumiNUS mobile application as the application to work on due to the multitude of pain points to work on and their potential. We will be working on further analyzing its stakeholders, pain points and a potential redesigned solution for its application interface.

Can't redeem on Healthy 365 App
It appears that tho the Healthy365 app claims to be 365, it's not 247.
I was at QQ Rice at novena on 3 Aug 2018 and ordered something for $6. I then opened the Healthy365 app to redeem a $5 e-voucher. Unfortunately, the app hanged at the last step so I ended up having to pay full price. Not sure if it was the shop having a weak internet signal or something wrong with the HPB servers
I think the next time this happens, I'll stop the app n restart it

#AroundIndy - Recreational Trail Programs are in the planning or construction phases all over the country. Eventually, many of these trails will be a relevant means of transportation and an opportunity for new businesses to settle along these trails. The Pennsy Trail on the east side of Indianapolis travels by several new businesses, a restaurant-pub that’s under construction called “Bonna Station” and by some blighted areas of town. Marketing will play an important role in sustaining the existing businesses, attracting new business owners and transforming abandoned or neglected properties back into operation. Security will also play an important role with trails. The Greenfield, Indiana section of the Pennsy Trail has emergency call boxes every mile on the rural portion of the trail. Photos are from the section of the Pennsy Trail that travel thru the historic Irvington neighborhood in #Indy between Shortridge and Ritter.
