SCOM Micro Writing Notes: Guilt.
There's a lot of guilt explored in SCOM. Obviously, Hunter has his own guilt of his past under Belos -- but he also experiences the guilt of those around him.
Tumblr media
With the Sigil Sickness becoming more of a concern, Hunter has to accept the fact that he branded witches under Belos -- and this led to families losing their loved ones.
Hettie is problematic in so many ways -- and even though she has a loving family, including a nephew who adores her -- Bettie implies that sometimes even those you love choose paths that make it VERY difficult for you to love them.
It's fair to assume that while Bettie (and likely her siblings) LOVE Hettie, they struggle with liking her.
In general, she has been one of the most fun background characters to write and I kind of love her family. That's about as close to OC's as I am going to get attached to.
In an earlier chapter, Hettie mentioned that not only did she have a hand in the beginnings of the Basilisk Experiments, but the "perfection" of the Sigil. She admits that there shouldn't BE a Sigil Sickness -- but her research is the reason that Bettie lost her husband (Bennie's Dad), and why the Cutburn Matriarch (The siblings mother) passed.
She may lack tact and a TON of self awareness, but it's safe to say that Hettie -- who in spite of turning her back on Hunter as an abused child soldier -- LOVES her nephew. It's safe to say she holds guilt to what she's done if even only as to how it directly affected her own kin.
And then there's Darius.

Could be for aesthetic reasons. Could be because you think you would do the best with that kind of magic. Any reason works.

Hiiii Jams 💛 what’s a random sturphy HC you haven’t shared before?
Heyyyy 💛 I have a thousand I haven't had a chance to talk about but this is the one that has been stuck in my head all afternoon:
Steve is surprised to learn as a young adult that Healing magic hurts. From the age of 12 up every cut and scrape and bruise Steve ever got was healed by Murph, usually after Grudgby practice, and it never hurt a bit so he just assumed that that's what good Healing magic is like. In reality there is always some degree of sensation, ranging from a faint tingly discomfort to re-experiencing the same injury in reverse, as the magic "undoes" the damage, but as a rule, the more the healer cares about the injured person the less it hurts
The first time Steve is injured after becoming a coven scout it's fixed by some random witch in the regiment and the healing process is AGONY and he just can't figure out why?? But then years later when he finally meets up with Murph again and they patch him up after a scrape and it doesn't hurt at all, and even they're surprised when he tells them that. And it turns out that the entire time they loved him that much that they accidentally became an unbelievably powerful Healing witch, but for only one guy specifically

Beastkeeping coven:
-all the safety restrictions for the animals. -zero safety precautions for the beastkeepers. You prolly aren’t living to sixty in that coven. -Eberwolf is just kinda a bad boss. Not actively horrible or anything, they just don’t solve anything on a good day. -they’re a relatively small coven, so they don’t get a lot of funding. The whole coven is constantly in a state of budget cuts. -Typically a pretty good community. -There tends to be clusters of beastkeepers in rural areas, there’s less of them in cities.
Potions coven:
-Safety is pretty 50/50. Depends on your job, really. -Vitmir is rarely seen in public, he seems to keep everything running somehow though. -Pretty large coven size. If you can’t pick a coven by the time you graduate, potions is a pretty safe bet. -There’s a pretty even spread of them across the isles. It’s not like they’ll ever run out of work.
Abomination coven:
-Safety is pretty abysmal. They’re normally so caught up in “can we?” That they never ask “should we?” -Darius keeps things together. He’s pretty apathetic, but it not like things are falling apart. -Big coven. Not the largest, certainly, but it’s a pretty popular tract choice. -Clusters of them in cities, they normally work in research facilities or factories.
Plant coven:
-Def not the safest coven. Not the worst, but the combination of deadly pants and Terra tend to make it a treacherous tract. -Terra is an active nightmare to work for. Titan help you if you get her angry. She does get shit done, though. -Despite all this, it’s the largest coven. You can’t pretend their magic isn’t useful in everyday life. -Like the beastkeeping coven, they tend to live in rural areas.
Bard coven:
-Pretty safe. Not like they’re working in particularly dangerous environments, normally. -Raine’s a very understanding boss, but the bard coven typically doesn’t come out on top when there’s arguments. -It’s the smallest coven. The reputation doesn’t really incentivize people to join. -Most of them live in pretty urban areas, but there’s a decent few in smaller towns.
Healing coven:
-Ironically dangerous, especially if we’re counting burnout as a danger. -Hettie is ruthless when it comes to her covenmates. She’s not the worst boss, but you want to avoid her if possible. -Middling coven size, on the smaller size. -There’s definitely more of them in cities, but you can find a healer pretty much anywhere.
Construction coven:
-Safest coven in existence. Seriously, their worker safety handbook is as tall as Mason and is required reading. -Mason is pretty strict with keeping things in order. -Mid coven size. -Their members don’t seem to cluster in any particular area, which is odd, considering the concentration of construction projects in cities.
Illusion coven:
-About as safe as a regular office worker in our realm. -Adrian is an absolute dick of a boss. He’s the type to randomly make people sing their reports, and then not fix anything. -Fairly small coven size. -There’s a pretty thin but even spread of them. You can find one almost anywhere, but it might not be easy.
Oracle coven:
-High risk of madness, but other than that you’re good. -Osran never really does anything. He’s just kinda not interfering. -It’s the third largest coven. Who doesn’t want to see the future? -They tend to live in the middle of nowhere. Like, seriously, where are all these supposed members?

Headcanon that the covens didn't go away after the glove to remove the sigils was made. A lot of those witches had already been using the same kind of magic for years and while many would likely have tried branching out, they would still mostly use the magic associated with their covens.

[IMAGE ID: two rectangular flags, with fifteen stripes each. the fourth and twelfth stripes are made up of several four-pointed stars. they are making their neighboring stripes look rounded. the second and fourteenth stripes are wavy. the first flag has a four-pointed star in the center. it has a few sets of radiating lines coming off of it. the second flag has the healing coven sigil in the center. the sigil is a blue hand, raised palm up, with what looks like bandages wrapped around it. the entire flag is different shades of light blue, warm blue, teal, cool blue, and dark blue. healintrion: a term relating to the idea that healing magic is a passion; a strong interest that is driven by intrigue and the desire to master it. one could be a teacher of healing magic or could be studying it out of love and the drive to learn more.

SCOM NEW CHAPTER!
Hello again, old friend of a friend
Link ^^^
Tumblr media
Hettie Cuttburn was not one to show weakness. Five time winner of the Bonesborough Brawl, Hettie had only given up the title when she deemed the competition “too tame” for her liking – which was a loss for the organizers of the event who had counted on Hettie’s expertise in putting her opponents back together. Literally.
Hunter had heard many theories as to why her head was always covered, the most popular being that she was a gorgon and her gaze would turn anyone to stone at one glance. All Hunter knew for sure was that Hettie was one of the first Coven Heads to see his face, and though Hettie herself never treated Hunter, she would always assign him a different apprentice.
“What brings you to my doors this time, boy?” Hettie groaned.
