“We Rock ‘n’ Rollers Will Resist—And We Will Triumph!
When the Smoke Cleared on Disco Demolition Night, Debate Over Its Cultural Meaning Began.

In the bright glare of Comiskey Park’s stadium lights, the rising column of smoke takes on a spectral quality. Riot police approach from the right to close in on the phantom, a smoldering pile of vinyl records, at center field. Debris litters the turf below; haze obscures the deck above. Disco Demolition Night, as captured here by a Chicago Sun-Times staff reporter, had turned into something far more out-of-control than a promotional stunt during a double header.
The July 12, 1979 event was the brainchild of a Chicago shock-jock-style radio personality, 24-year-old Steve Dahl, and Mike Veeck, Chicago White Sox promotions manager and son of the baseball club’s owner. Dahl had become a self-appointed anti-disco activist the previous Christmas Eve when he lost his job; his then-employer had switched overnight from rock to an all-disco playlist, following a nationwide trend that saw many radio stations jump on the disco hype train.
Dahl landed at WLUP 97.9, another rock station, where he developed a loyal following. He opened each morning’s broadcast with a ritual: According to a 2019 interview with NPR, Dahl would first cue up a disco song, and then after a harsh record scratch, play the sound of an explosion. He began hosting “Death to Disco” rallies at local Chicago nightclubs, and his band, Teenage Radiation, recorded a disco parody track (sample lyric: “Look at my hair, it's perfect/I saw Saturday Night Fever/Eighty-seven times”). “We have to destroy all disco, it’s our job,” Dahl told his listeners. He planned to make good on his destructive mission, literally, by blowing up a cache of disco records at a local mall. When Veeck learned of the idea, he offered Dahl a much larger venue for the pyrotechnics. The event would take place on one of Comiskey Park’s teen nights.
Dahl was tapping into an animus that had as much to do with anxiety over the zeitgeist as dislike of a musical genre. “It’s worth remembering now that in 1979, the economy and economic opportunities for people who don’t have a college education is actually shrinking,” Adam Green, a professor of African American history and cultural studies at the University of Chicago, told American Experience. “The city is changing because of things that have to do with the economy and politics; it’s not changing because of disco music. But if Steve Dahl says that he’s been screwed by disco, it gives permission to other people to say, ‘you know what? I’ve been screwed too.’”
youtube
Steve Dahl’s band recorded an anti-disco parody of Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.”
Disco had first emerged earlier in the decade, evolving out of funk, R&B and soul music; its innovators were Black, gay and Latino, and its milieu was the underground nightclub, where those marginalized groups found safe spaces to socialize. However, once record labels realized the genre’s commercial potential, disco music went mass market. And those now-mainstream clubs where disco was played (of which Studio 54 in New York City was the ne plus ultra) developed an elitist cachet that alienated the young, mostly white working class Chicagoans who listened to Dahl. With songs like “Y.M.C.A.,” “Night Fever” and “I Will Survive” topping the Billboard charts, the genre’s ascendance by the end of the Seventies was complete. It was also, then, a prime target for takedown.
These currents were all swirling in the air around the nighttime double header in mid-July, a showdown between the last-in-league Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. Veeck simply thought Disco Demolition Night would draw several thousand more fans during a losing season.
Dahl wore a combat helmet and fatigues to the park. His anti-disco army turned out en masse, drinking and growing increasingly rowdy as the innings went on. By the time Dahl rode out onto the field in a military Jeep after the first game, nearly 50,000 spectators were crammed into the park; an additional 10,000-plus were outside.
For reduced-price tickets to the park that night, many attendees brought records to be destroyed; all of the sacrificial vinyl filled a bin that was set down, ceremonially, in the middle of the field. Dahl got the crowd chanting “Disco Sucks,” a message matched by homemade banners hung from the stadium’s upper deck. “They’re not gonna shove it down our throats,” he yelled into a microphone. “We rock ‘n’ rollers will resist—and we will triumph!” The records were detonated, tearing a crater into the midfield sod. “That blowed up real good,” Dahl crowed, echoing the signature line that accompanied his on-air disco “explosions.” Triumphant, he got back in the Jeep and rode off the field—along with many of the ballpark security staff. That was when the true mayhem broke out.
Tumblr media
People started streaming onto the green by the thousands. They stole bases and tipped over a batting cage; they ripped up turf. They rushed both bullpens and began burning signs. Fights broke out. Veteran White Sox announcer Harry Caray tried to shift the tone by singing ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ over the PA system. No one listened. A message on the scoreboard—PLEASE RETURN TO YOUR SEATS—pleaded, futilely, with the attendees still stoking fires. White Sox announcer Jimmy Piersall opined, “I hope they don’t let you people see what’s going on here at Comiskey Park; one of the saddest sights I’ve ever seen in a ballpark in my life.” Eventually the Chicago riot police arrived, some on horseback, and cleared the field.
Later, after the smoke cleared, and critics and commentators began evaluating the event, many would describe Disco Demolition as an opening salvo in the culture wars. What role racism and homophobia played in Dahl and his groupies’ rebellion remained up for debate. Even from today’s vantage point, a definitive interpretation of Disco Demolition is still murky. “If we seek a true memory,” Green said, “this is the meaning of the backlash against disco, then we're probably going to find ourselves in a situation where we never settle the argument. And I think that that’s the way of all major cultural transformations.”

PONTEVEDRA
On October 16, 1941, the Pontevedra Football Club was founded thanks to the union of the two most important clubs of that time in the city, the Eiriña Football Club and the Alfonso XIII Football Club. Before said merger, the fans were divided between "alfonsistas" and "eiriñistas", thus decimating the forces of a small capital with little demographics. The Paseo de las Palmeras witnessed this historic agreement. Its first president was Fernando Ponte Conde. On December 28 of the same year, they made their official presentation facing Celta de Vigo at the Municipal Stadium in Pasarón. The match ended 3-3, and this was the first line-up in the team's history: Domínguez, Ruibal, Botones, Hermida, Calviño, "Masito", Ernesto, Pinocho, Foro, Corbacho, Besada and Iglesias.
Nino Mirón became president of Pontevedra at the beginning of the decade, and revived the club sportingly, which had been stuck in Second B for decades, without cold or heat. He qualified in 2002 for the Playoffs for promotion to the Second Division, in a group made up of Pontevedra himself, Real Madrid Castilla, RCD Espanyol B and Almería, who would end up ascending. The following year, they qualified for the playoffs again, and failed again in the league with CD Castellón, Barakaldo and Ciudad de Murcia, which would end up being promoted. It had been two years of emotions for the garnet fans, and although promotion had not been achieved, football was beating again in the city of Lérez. The 2003-04 season was faced as the definitive one to return to the silver category. After finishing first in the group, in the playoff they were drawn with CD Mirandés, CD Badajoz and Lorca Club de Fútbol. Mirandés would tie first in extremis in Pasarón, 2-2, to then win the garnets 0-2 in Badajoz. After drawing with Badajoz itself at home, on the fourth day of the playoff they traveled to Miranda de Ebro. If that game was won, promotion would be within reach, since it would only be necessary to win one of the two games against Lorca in the last two days In an intense match, in which there were even riots between fans, Pontevedra won 0-1 thanks to a goal by Cabrera Cava in the second half. There was one victory left in two games, and after being defeated in Lorca, they reached Pasarón on June 27 in a toss-up game: the winner would go up to the silver division. After arriving 0-0 at the break, in minute 57 Xaco would open the scoring after a blunder by goalkeeper Rafa Gómez. Then after a great header and a great counter, both plays culminated by Javi Rodríguez "El rifle", they would sentence the promotion, managing to recover the category 27 years later. The season in Second would not be easy. After an acceptable start, Pontevedra would reach the middle of the league completely evicted, more than 15 points from salvation, firing their coach, José Aurelio Gay, and signing Argibay, with whom the maroon team would try to turn the situation. After a spectacular second round, even beating Celta de Vigo in an exciting 3-1 derby, Pontevedra remains 3 points from salvation and is relegated.
CHARLES DIAS OLIVEIRA
He began his career in the lower categories of Santos F. C. and Tuna Luso Brasileira, before signing for the Portuguese C. D. Feirense in the 2001-02.4 season. There he played for three years, in which he won an II Divisão championship and the consequent promotion to the Second Division in the 2002-03 campaign.5 In the 2003-04 season he played thirty games and scored three goals in the second category of Portuguese football.6 In July 2004 his signing for Pontevedra C. F. was confirmed, 7 with which he made his debut in the Second Division of Spain. This event took place on August 28 in a 0-1 loss against Club Polideportivo Ejido; He replaced his teammate Manuel Canabal in the 75th minute and three minutes later he was sent off.8 In the 2004-05 season he played a total of thirty-three games in which he scored six goals, but Pontevedra was relegated to Second Division B. 9 He continued to be part of the Galician team in the bronze category for the next five years, in which he coincided with his cousins Igor and Yuri, who also played as forwards. He left the Galician club with 57 goals in 194 games. At the beginning of July 2010, it was announced that he would join Córdoba C.F. for the following two seasons.10 In his first campaign he scored a total of fifteen goals in the Second Division, including three braces against Rayo Vallecano de Madrid,11 Xerez C. D.12 and Albacete Balompié;13 while in the second he scored seven goals and played the promotion promotion to the First Division, in which Córdoba was defeated by Real Valladolid C. F.14
On July 31, 2020, after it became official that he would not continue in the armorer team, he returned to Pontevedra C. F.38

This blog is all about gender performance. The work is a blog documenting queer art, history, performance, and recent politics regarding the hostility surrounding trans rights. Gender performance is defined as something that is ingrained in our daily practices, learned, and performed based on cultural norms of femineity and masculinity. This definition of gender was popularized by Judith Butler in their book Gender Trouble, published in 1990. Furthermore, they asserted that sex is biological, while gender is culturally constructed. Think about how you were raised to play with certain toys, how you were dressed, and how you were told to act. Often times girls are encouraged to play dress up while boys are pushed to play with trucks and boy-appropriate toys. This behavior is reinforced throughout a child's formative years within their schools. We see this in Bell Hook's essay Understanding Patriarchy as she critiques how society has shaped and traumatized its children to act in rigid gender roles to avoid punishment. She writes, "Embracing patriarchal thinking like everyone else around them, they taught it to their children because it seemed like a 'natural' way to organize life"( Hooks pg. 18). Gender roles are established to maintain a societal expectation where men are in power. At the same time, women are expected to be domesticated; any deviation is considered unnatural. It also shapes how children grow up emotionally, where boys are expected to repress their emotions while girls are encouraged to express their feelings as long as it is not anger. After analyzing how children are raised in this patriarchal structure, we can better understand the definition of gendered performance and how queer artists created literal gender performance.
Throughout the history of performance art, there has been cross-dressing, as seen in Greek amphitheaters and in Shakespeare's plays. Going forward, drag was a Vaudeville performance done in speakeasies and underground bars. In the 20th century, ballroom culture emerged, spaces where black and Latino LGBTQ+  could perform pageants to win prizes. Ballroom culture was made up of "Houses, alternative families run by an older "mother" and "father" who provided shelter and guidance to those ostracized by their families (Nasr). The history of drag cannot be complete without mentioning Marsha P. Johnson, who protested police raids on gay clubs during the Stone Wall Riots of 1969. While drag has been prevalent throughout history, it has recently gained popularity among mainstream audiences through RuPaul's Drag Race. The show has undeniably changed how drag is perceived, making the drag queen an international celebrity (Nasr). According to The Art of Activism, " We can 'queer' mass culture by making it say things it was never designed to say and act in ways it was never meant to act" (Ducombe and Lambert, pg. 126). Therefore by being outspoken and openly expressing oneself, queer performance art can make a greater change to LGBTQ+ representation and legislation. Reviewing the history of queer performance art, there is a common theme of celebration and active protest against cis-heterosexual normativity.
Therefore, my blog is a curated catalog that not only celebrates the history of LGBTQ+ performance but uses the platform to spread awareness about anti-trans and gay legislation being discussed recently. "It is important to bring creativity, joy, pleasure, and play into activism. Not only is it a more effective way to get your message across and entice others to join us, but it is equally important because it'll keep us doing the work that needs to be done" (Ducombe and Lambert, pg. 128). Divine Rebis is a space I created to show others a collection of performance art, along with historical pictures of queer love. My project was directly inspired by Black Contemporary Art created by Kimberly Drew. The blog's header shows a group of women cross-dressing as men, a common practice amongst lesbians during the 20th century. Within this blog, I have uploaded interviews from my friends talking about their experiences with gender, their personal definitions of gender performance, and how they feel about the current political unrest surrounding trans rights and drag. My performance is curating this work while cross-dressing, actively taking interviews, and spreading the message of this blog to everyone who listens.

"A whole month dedicated to Lucifer?" Mammon's nose was scrunched in disgust at the thought. Satan was beside him, shaking his head shamefully. You let out a loud laugh, a snort escaping alongside your giggle at the faces they were making. "You humans have poor taste."
"No, silly demon," you laughed again as Mammon's cheeks flared pink at the name. "Pride month meaning a celebration for the different sexualities and genders that are out of the ordinary to others." You tilted your head with a frown as you saw their confusion, "I don't really know how to explain it well."
"I can!" Asmo jumped into the conversation with a grin. "Pride month commemorates the impact the LGBTQ+ members have. It does focus on honoring out of the norm genders and sexualities, though. In rememberance of the first Pride."
"Right, the Stonewall Riots in 1969."
Mammon frowned, tilting his head. He looked Asmo up and down in question, eyes guarded yet curious. Satan held his chin in thought, nodding once he properly gathered his thoughts. The blond spoke with a raised eyebrow, "so, nothing to do with Lucifer?"
"No," you rolled your eyes, "nothing to do with Lucifer."
Asmo claps then, the sparkling grin on his lips growing wider and spelling out touble for the rest of you. Throwing an arm around your shoulders — and ignoring Mammon's scowl — he rubbed his cheek against yours before speaking. "We should go out and celebrate! We don't have any real Pride celebrations down here, but we can drink!"
"There's no way—"
"Absolutely not."
You interrupted the brothers, cuddling closer to Asmo with a smile and slinging your arm around his waist. "Sounds fun, I'm in!"
Sharing a glance, the other brothers agreed in unison. Honestly, you weren't even sure where the others came from — it was originally just four of you in the kitchen. Eyes wide, you looked like a startled deer at the loud proclomation of, "I'm going, too!" as six voices spoke up.
—— ♥︎ ——
You really thought they'd have dispersed by now. But, the seven brothers were still prowling around you and wandering around the club you'd decided to go to. Solomon had come along, simply saying he'd watch after you because the brothers tended to get too distracted to keep an eye on you.
"Drink with me!" A whine came from behind you. Turning on the barstool you sat on, Mammon stood behind you with a pout. There was a flush on his cheeks that said he was tipsy — the glitter on his cheeks you'd convinced him to wear reflected the club's lights and made his eyes shine so prettily. Messily, Mammon handed you a shot glass before clinking them together. "Cheers!"
"Happy Pride month!" you yelled enthuiastically before downing the alcohol. You grimaced as you felt the burn in your throat settle in your chest. "Ugh, that was awful."
"Careful," Solomon spoke up quietly. A miniscule frown was on his lips as he took a sip of the same drink he'd had all night. Scooting closer to you, the wizard spoke in your ear so that you'd actually hear him. "Devildom alcohol is a lot different than ours, you know?"
"It'll be fine!"
Levi as the next to walk up to you with drinks, a scowl on his face at the music. It was surprising that he'd agreed to come to the little get together — you expected him to leave by now, honestly. But, the avatar of envy had stuttered out half-hearted insults to other people as you dusted glitter over his cheeks before your group left, cheeks aflame at the close contact you shared.
Handing you a drink that was named after an anime he'd seen, Levi sipped on the colorful beverage. He scrunched his nose at the taste before declaring it'd be his last drink for the night — he had a game to get back to, after all.
"Happy Pride month!" you cheered again before chugging the drink Levi brought you. He and Solomon watched you with wide eyes, mouths agape as you swallowed the full cup until it was empty. Slamming the empty cup onto the bar, you pursed your lips in thought. "Huh, these are getting easier to drink."
Solomon shook his head, a small grin of amusement on his lips as he watched your antics. Lucifer shared a drink with you before heading back to his office, leaving with a stern reminder to watch Y/N to his brothers. Beel and Belphie took two shots with you before heading to a resteraunt nearby to grab a snack before going home. Satan took a seat beside you at the bar, watching as Mammon made — and lost — bets with random demons at the club.
"Think you've had enough," Solomon spoke up as Mammon convinced you to have yet another shot with him. You curled your nose in disagreement, shaking your head at him. "C'mon, Y/N, how about you drink some water?"
"How about!" You paused as the world began to spin. Blinking, you refocused on Solomon with an animalistic grin. "You mind your business, old man?"
Satan snorted, covering the laugh with a sip to his drink before you could turn on him. Nonchalantly, he pulled the drink you were sipping on away from your reach. "Solomon's right, Y/N. Maybe you should stop now."
You pouted at the blond, not even realizing your drink was gone. Before you could reply, Asmo sauntered up to you with a drink in his hand a grin on his lips. "Drink with me, pretty!"
Without even agreeing, you snatched the drink from his hand with a grin. Clinking the drinks together, you grinned at the avatar of lust. "Happy Pride month!" you exclaimed before downing the beverage. "Oh, that was so good. Best one yet!"
"I don't think you should've done that, Asmo." Solomon spoke quietly. He nodded your way with his chin, watching as you spoke enthusiastically to Satan about who knows what. "They're pretty drunk already."
"I know," Asmo hummed as he drank his own drink. Seeing it, you quickly stopped talking to stare at him with wide eyes. "Oh, I guess you could have my drink, cutie."
As you downed that drink, too, Asmo sent a wink to the other disbelieving boys. Watching the drink dribble down your chin fondly, Asmo leaned closer to whisper to Solomon and Satan. "Don't worry, it's just water. If one of you will help me get them to bed, the other can drag Mammon out."
That's how you ended up sandwiched between Solomon and Asmodeous, arms slung across their shoulders as they led you to the demon's room. You were humming a song you'd heard at the club, curling a finger in Asmo's hair as he opened the door. Solomon watched you dance into the room, "will you guys be okay now?"
"Yeah!" Asmo grinned with a wave. "I've got this, no worries. Night!"
Sauntering up to you with a playful smile, Asmo hummed along with you. Eyes widened, you swirl around to grin at him and sway along to the song in your heads. Sighing, you settle your arms around the demon's shoulders, relaxing into him further as he recipricated the hold on your hips. "Pretty," you sighed again as you placed your face in his neck. "You're so, so pretty, Asmo."
"You're too sweet, lovely." His cheeks flushed at the sincere — and true — compliment. Shuffling you closer to the bed, he laid you on it gently. Kneeling beside you, Asmo could only peer down at you fondly as you blinked up at him. "How about we get changed into something comfy, hm?"
"Oh!" you dragged your voice out. Trailing your fingers up his chest teasingly, your grin turned sensual and excited. "Didn't know that's why you brought me to your room."
"Hm, tempting," Asmo stooped down to press a gentle kiss to your lips before perking back up. "But, not when you've been drinking. Never when you're this drunk." He tapped your hips lightly, indicating for you to lift them so he could help you out of your clothes. You whined but complied anyways, allowing Asmo to shuffle you out of your clubbing clothes and into a shirt that was far too large for you.
Grabbing his skincare from his bathroom, Asmo re-entered his room with a coo at how sleepy you looked. He got back into his previous position, kneeling beside your head for easy access to your face. "As pretty as you looked tonight, it's time to get cleaned up, okay?"
"'Kay," you hummed out in response. Gently, the demon made sure to remove any and all of the makeup you wore. He carefully swiped the glitter you wore away as he thought about how cute it was that you matched Mammon and Levi tonight.  Sleepily, you slurred out a small, "thanks, 'mo." as he pulled away for a second.
Grinning down at you fondly, he pressed another kiss to your lips before rubbing moisturizer onto your face. "Anything for you, pretty. You know that."
Leaving you briefly to do his own routine, the demon didn't expect to see you trying to sit up on his bed. Tilting his head, the question dropped from his tongue before he could say it as you extended your arms outward. You pouted, "we cuddlin'?"
"'Course we're cuddling!" Jumping into the bed, Asmo made sure you were surrounded by his arms and that your legs were tangled with his. At this point, you didn't know whos limb was where, but you were too comfortable to complain. Pressing a loud kiss to your forehead, Asmo sighed dreamily. "Goodnight, Y/N."
"Sweet dreams, 'Smo."

The Voyage So Far: Wano (Part Two)
east blue (1 | 2) || alabasta (1 | 2) || skypiea || water 7 || enies lobby || thriller bark || paramount war (1 | 2) || fishman island || punk hazard || dressrosa (1 | 2) || whole cake island || wano (1 | 2)
Tumblr media
okay so the wano flashback is possibly my favorite in the whole series for a whole bunch of different reasons, and oden as a character is a big part of why. honestly, i think he’s great. he’s wildly entertaining and ridiculously likable, just like a folk hero should be.
Tumblr media
i care about oden and the akazaya nine a lot. they have one of my favorite found family dynamics in the whole series, up there with the strawhats themselves- a bunch of thugs and castoffs who wound up gathering around this one wildly charismatic moron and deciding to be stronger and better for him.
i think they really feel like a family, in these little moments we get of them just interacting and messing around, and it only makes later events- oden’s death, the twenty-year separation, kanjurou’s betrayal- hurt all the worse.
Tumblr media
on god it is the funniest thing on earth to me that this is how oden and izou wound up on whitebeard’s ship.
Tumblr media
the roger pirates!! i really really like the roger pirates!! i love that there’s this entire predecessor crew who are both absolutely fucking fascinating from a lore perspective and who are just all individually really good characters with really fun relationships. the dynamics we get to see just in this brief part of the flashback are absolutely delightful. i think the fact that i would read a whole series just about the roger pirates is a testament to oda’s character writing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there’s a specific sort of tragedy to the roger pirates, and i think it really hits home in their last few pages in this flashback. by all appearances, they were a crew just as close-knit as the strawhats are. they cared about each other a lot- that ship was their home.
and then their captain died, and they just- fell apart.
awhile back, in my sabaody post, i talked about how we get to know roger first as a story and then as a character by getting to meet characters who knew him personally. to the rest of the world, roger is a story, a name to curse or a height to aspire to. but for shanks and rayleigh and crocus and buggy and all the rest of the roger pirates, he was their captain.
Tumblr media
the whole wano flashback, possibly more than any of the others in the series, really feels to me like a story being told, a folk tale being passed down, which makes sense, since it’s canonically framed as oden’s diary entries. and i think that framing device just adds so much to the atmosphere of this entire section of story, the feeling of myth and legend to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i honestly really like how oden’s death is handled. i have trouble articulating it, but it’s so much, so over the top, so heavily set up and foreshadowed- a legendary death for a legendary man, if that makes sense.
Tumblr media
toki’s prophecy is one of my favorite motifs in this whole arc. wano is all about a country that’s been trapped and dying for years and years, holding out desperate hope for salvation. toki is the one who gave them that hope. she doesn’t try to tell them that everything will be okay, she says it will be dark and the darkness will be long, but the dawn will come, and even though she gave her life to do that, she did it smiling.
without toki, the wano arc never would have happened, because there would be no future to fight for.
Tumblr media
this panel is the header on my favorite op discord server and sometimes i just scroll up and stare at it. it’s so good.
this entire sequence, starting from luffy law and kidd’s entrance, is probably my favorite in wano arc. it’s the turning of the sides, the daybreak after the darkest hour- these three show up, and then jinbe, and denjirou reveals his true colors and it’s revealed all the rest of the samurai left before orochi blew the bridges, and it turns out they haven’t lost a single step to kanjurou’s treachery. it just feels so good to read, after the prior hopelessness of the akazaya and the tragedy of the flashback.
Tumblr media
i really like how the akazaya nine are absolutely ready to roast each other at any and all times. that’s how you know they’re best friends.
Tumblr media
i think i mentioned it back in fishman island, but one of my favorite things is the strawhats just being absolutely cheerfully, chaotically destructive. every time we get to see them wreck havoc while nonchalantly bickering with each other it puts a huge smile on my face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think ulti and page one are very very funny and i like their dynamic a lot, it’s a laugh riot. i also like that oda lets luffy seriously fight a woman here!! i’m serious, we don’t see enough no-holds-barred fights between men and women (conventionally attractive women, specifically) in this series, so i’m pleasantly surprised when it does happen.
Tumblr media
i do appreciate wano’s ability to continuously raise the “holy shit!” quotient without it ever really feeling like a twist just for the sake of the audience. like, i don’t know that anybody saw kaidou killing orochi coming, but at the same time, it feels like it does make sense, given what we know about kaidou, for him to do this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my heart goes out to momo, honestly. he’s only eight, and in that time he’s lost his home and family and his whole world when he was thrown twenty years into the future, and he has the weight of his whole country resting on his shoulders. he’s borne up admirably under that stress, starting from zou and building up to this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i LOVE kin’emon’s speech to kaidou about luffy SO much. kin’emon’s come a long way from being a mostly comedy relief character in punk hazard to here, where he’s shouting down an emperor. i really like this progression- kin’emon doesn’t change, exactly, but the side of his character that is revealed in wano is very likable and admirable. it goes back to something i’ve mentioned before, about how one piece’s characters are very rarely one-dimensional.
Tumblr media
kaidou’s dragon form is extremely cool, and so are most of the panels where it appears- it’s extremely striking, especially in panels like this, where he’s silhouetted against the moon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i love... the ripple effects of luffy just being himself that spread throughout the world of one piece, and i think this is one of the best examples. luffy befriended coby all the way back in chapter two, mostly by accident, and now, nine hundred and some chapters later, that’s what leads to drake joining the strawhats’ side. because drake is friends with coby who says luffy is trustworthy, so when drake is stuck with nobody else to turn to, he turns to luffy.
moments like this really reinforce just how much the world and story of one piece is built on relationships between people, and i really like that. i like that instead of necessarily being built around abstract ideals or morals, characters’ actions are, more often than not, motivated by either specific personal goals or by their relationships with other characters. it feels much more true to life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i like the loss of kiku’s arm, because it showcases exactly how serious the fight is on both sides. it both shows that kaidou is fighting to maim and kill and do whatever it takes to win, and that the akazaya are fully prepared to take whatever he throws at them. kiku gets back up smiling after losing her arm. neither side in this fight is even close to backing down, now or ever.
Tumblr media
i genuinely can’t believe how long it took me to talk about yamato, so let me just say: i love him so much. part of this, i’m sure, is my personal bias towards any and all kickass queer characters, but part of it is just- he’s so cool. he’s ten feet tall and carries a club about as big as he is and tanks explosions like they’re nothing while also bickering with luffy and falling out of ceilings and generally being like... stupidly lovable.
i just like yamato a lot.
Tumblr media
a thousand chapters in, and every strawhat but robin has had a moment where they declare luffy is going to be the king of the pirates, but honestly, i think nami’s might be my favorite yet. nami has always been a person who acts at a distance, not one inclined to direct confrontation and putting herself in danger-
and yet, when it comes down to it, when faced with a choice between death and disavowing her captain’s dream, even when assured by usopp that she would be fully justified in lying for her life, nami chooses luffy. even in the most dire of circumstances, all of the strawhats know luffy is going to be the king of the pirates, and none of them would ever deny it.
Tumblr media
i kind of alluded to this back in my dressrosa post, but i really like the development of law’s new dream being discovering the meaning of the will of d. it just feels like a very good and natural progression for his character, given he’s the only holder of the will of d who we’ve been shown is consciously aware of it and what it might mean. and in general, i like seeing him having something else to work towards after doflamingo’s defeat.
Tumblr media
i’ll end this by just saying i am so desperately curious to know what is in that book, and what yamato knows about the will of d, about the dawn of the world, about laugh tale.
guess we’ll find out, huh?
thanks for reading through to the end!! i had a lot of fun putting these posts together, and writing them up was a really cool way to be able to compile my thoughts headed into chapter 1000 and beyond. i can’t wait to see where oda takes us next.

Church — Generally this refers to a scheduled club meeting. Chapel — The meeting room of the MC.
Chapel — The meeting room for the mc.
Kutte or Cut — The term cut refers either to the fact that the sleeves have been "cut" off to make a vest, or that the Motorcycle Clubs back patch has been "cut" into a traditional three-piece patch (top rocker, bottom rocker and center patch). "Cut" could also simply be an English adaptation of the German word for such a vest, which is "Kutte".
Dime —  A 10-year prison sentence.
Flash Patch — Front patches for members who go above and beyond. Awarded for doing time for the club or performing a hit etc.
First Nine — Refers to the original first nine members who founded the Sons of Anarchy MC. These members wear a patch that says "First 9" on it.
Hang around —  A Hang Around is a person that has not attained Prospect status. A Hang Around is not a representative or member of the club in any way and neither he nor the club has a claim on each other. If something happens to him, the club is not expected to back him up. A man will generally hang around with the club until he is approached by the club to become a prospect, however becoming a prospect is not guaranteed.
Crow Eater — A female who hangs around or sleeps with a SAMCRO member prospect or member's vest.
Jessika — The top of the chain of *Crow eaters.
Mister Mayhem — Death. "Meeting Mr. Mayhem" is SOA euphemism for killing someone. A reference to the Men of Mayhem.
Nomad — A Nomad is a club member who does not belong to any specific charter, yet has privileges in all charters. As the name implies, the Nomads will go anywhere to take care of business. The only one who can call in the Nomads however is either the national president or a charter president.
Old Lady — Wife or steady girlfriend of a club member. She’s monogamous and has the respect of the other women. There is usually one Queen; the main old lady. For SAMCRO the queen was Gemma Teller-Morrow until Season 5 when Tara Knowles-Teller became the main old lady and therefore the queen.
One Percenter — A term rising out of the 1947 Hollister Riot. A motorcycle rally being held in the town of Hollister got out of hand as the town was overrun by more bikers than had been expected. Several MCs took over the town and began drinking heavily and racing in the streets. In the aftermath, the AMA is said to have issued a statement that 99% of motorcycle riders are law abiding citizens, and that it is the 1% of troublemakers that are the problem. This story, however, may be apocryphal. Many outlaw clubs took this on as their new identity, and the term "One Percenter" was born.
Packing Double — Having a girl on the back of your bike.
Prospect — Someone hopeful for club membership, who rides with the club during a probationary period. A unanimous club vote must be cast by the members for full initiation.
TM — Refers to the shop, Teller Morrow, started by Clay Morrow and John Teller.
The Unholy Ones — Like many biker patches, the real meaning of this one is debated. Some say it means that the wearer has killed for the club; others say that it is a reference to when a member is ordered to do a hit on a fellow member of the club, making them Unholy in carrying out a deed usually met with death for killing another member. Happy is a known assassin and Clay is known to have killed at least 2 members already. According to the sons of anarchy collectors edition book, the unholy ones patch is referred to as the patch club members wear that shows they will fight to the death for the club.

Lille hammer 'beginners' PSG as they close in on the Champions League
Adam White and Eric Devin, 15 Apr 2019 13.30 BST
This time last season Lille were second bottom. Now they are second only to PSG at the top of the table.
Stade Louis-Dugauguez, Sedan, December 2000. Laurent Robert scores PSG’s only goal as they lose 5-1 to Sedan, who now play in the fourth tier. On Sunday night, nearly two decades later, Lille became the latest team to put five goals past PSG in a Ligue 1 fixture. While the scoreline was an unfamiliar one, it was the type of defeat PSG know only too well.
Lille put PSG under pressure from the start. Xeka’s flicked header rebounded off Thomas Meunier and into the next to give Lille the lead and, although Juan Bernat swiftly responded with the equaliser, PSG appeared brittle in what was a fraught and open game. After Bernat was dismissed for bringing down Nicolas Pépé, the second half was a riot.
Pépé rolled home five minutes after the break before winger Jonathan Bamba crashed in a third. Bamba, Pépé and Jonathan Ikoné all might have scored before centre-backs Gabriel and José Fonte outmuscled a lethargic PSG defence that was missing Thiago Silva and Marquinhos to embellish the scoreline further.
Kylian Mbappé said PSG “played like beginners” and “must play with more personality”. Although Tuchel insisted that he disagreed with Mbappé’s explanation, it has become an almost clichéd PSG punchline as mental strength again proved non-existent. Despite winning 26 of their 30 league games with a modicum of fuss, this was the second time in a week that PSG have thrown away the chance to win the title. A win against Strasbourg last Sunday would have sufficed, but they could only draw; and a draw against Lille would have been enough, but they were beaten. Once again – mirroring a host of limp exits from the Champions League, PSG imploded when handed a relatively simple task with something tangible at stake.
Particularly guilty of lacking personality was German defender Kehrer who, as he did against United, looked terrified and was positionally very poor; Presnel Kimpembe again underlined how he has regressed this season; and Leandro Parades failed to make any impact. Despite his €47m fee, he looks likely to be demoted to the bench next season.
Mbappé, playing like he had something to prove after a wayward display in the defeat to United, was the only PSG player to show resilience or threaten consistently. His sharp turn and looped cross to set up Bernat’s goal remained a highlight. On top of the humiliation, PSG also suffered collateral damage via a (typically) needless Marco Verratti booking for berating the referee late on, meaning he will miss their league game at Nantes on Wednesday.
Although this dismantling will be frustrating and embarrassing, there are caveats. PSG had injuries and Christophe Galtier’s men had much more to play for: if they secure second place, they will not have to enter the Champions League qualifiers in July. Tuchel’s style tends to create more fluid games, something that has benefits PSG, even if defeats like these are possible when their intensity drops. Their one-dimensional, possession-based football may have worn down Ligue 1 opponents in previous seasons, but it meant they plateaued in Europe. Despite the disastrous defeat to United, there were signs of genuine progress in Europe this season against Liverpool and Napoli.
Nevertheless, Pépé – who was awarded a rare 9/10 from L’Équipe, who deemed him “unplayable” – pointed out that Lille “could have scored more” as Galtier got his pre-match wish for his team to “play without restraint.” After Lyon’s latest catastrophe – they lost 2-1 at Nantes on Friday night – Lille now enjoy an eight-point cushion over Lyon in third.
Unfathomably, this time last season Lille were second bottom and seemingly destined for relegation. Galtier had taken over a rudderless and painfully inexperienced squad after Marcelo Bielsa’s disastrous reign and looked bereft of ideas. However, three somewhat miraculous wins in a row rescued Lille and Galtier has since set about reinventing the team and his own style, moulding a balanced, aggressive, pacey side who have far exceeded expectations this season. On Sunday night, Pépé described Galtier as “a great coach, just like his tactics – on a daily basis, he is there for us, in football or otherwise.” Galtier, meanwhile, praised his team’s “intensity, tactical rigour and especially their desire to win.”
The 52-year-old Frenchman owes some thanks to Luis Campos, the club’s sporting director. Often at odds with Bielsa over signings, Campos’ more considered transfer policy has proved revolutionary. Their transformation is all the more impressive given the financial issues that could yet instigate swathes of summer sales. Campos has managed to simultaneously generate transfer revenue, improve overall quality with well scouted additions and help Galtier build a more well rounded squad.
Kévin Malcuit, Fodo Ballo-Touré and Ibrahim Amadou and Yves Bissouma were all sold for eight-figure fees, while underperforming first-teamers such as Yassine Benzia, Junior Alonso and Anwar El Ghazi were replaced astutely by forward Jonathan Ikoné (20), full-back Zeki Celik (22), striker Rafael Leao (19) and Bamba (23), all of whom have proved crucial of late. The experience clearly lacking as Bielsa ripped everything up and started again was also re-introduced via thirty-somethings Fonte and Loïc Rémy.
Campos has quietly built one of Europe’s best squads in terms of value for money and given Galtier the tools to take them into the Champions League. Meanwhile, although PSG may not conceded five again domestically for another 20 years, this manner of defeat is becoming too common.
‘Lille hammer 'beginners' PSG...

LEICESTER EURO DREAMS EXPIRE IN ROME
An early header by Roma striker Tammy Abraham in the second leg of the Europa Conference League semi-final proved enough to send his side to the first-ever final of the competition, as – yet again – Leicester City fans were left cursing their side's chronic inability to defend set pieces.
Everything the Blue Army feared at the Stadio Olimpico duly came to pass, as the combined effects of a hostile home crowd, Jose Mourinho's notorious dark arts (perfected over decades) and indifferent (at best) performances by match officials were too much for City to overcome.
But the pitifully poor policing and stewarding of the event, which saw exchanges of missiles between rival groups of fans before, during and after the match, should be the subject of a UEFA investigation.
Had the result been different, there is every likelihood that many travelling Foxes could have been seriously injured or even killed. The level of protection offered to us by the host club was woefully and scandalously inadequate, with this correspondent the subject of attacks with both fireworks and flying bottles.
The home side spent several hours before kick-off whipping their fans into a frenzy, no doubt well aware of how often their visitors have wilted on previous occasions, at home and abroad, this season. Sadly, these efforts duly reaped their reward, with too many City players once again failing to do themselves justice.
Even so, had the visitors been awarded a penalty in the opening minutes, when Wesley Fofana was clearly wrestled to the ground to stop him reaching a James Maddison corner, the outcome might still have proved more positive for the Foxes.
Instead, Serbian referee Srdjan Jovanovic set the tone for the evening by rejecting City appeals, and with the VAR refusing to intervene - indeed, he was not to do so at any stage of the game - memories of previous improper behaviour by Italian clubs in the later stages of European competitions were brought to mind.
Roma mounted a series of early attacks in response, and a dubiously-awarded free-kick saw Pellegrini bring Kasper Schmeichel into action with a fierce-struck attempt that the City captain managed to turn over the bar.
The breakthrough, though, came shortly afterwards, as the home side forced a corner from which Pellegrini found the head of Abraham who gave Schmeichel no chance.
As too often during this campaign – and indeed in previous ones – the keeper was far too passive in dealing with set pieces, especially as the senior authority in defence. It beggars belief that the management and coaching team appear to have made no effort whatsoever to correct this vulnerability, more befitting of a Sunday pub team than a club in contention for European honours.
Pellegrini continued to cause problems for the City defence, forcing Schmeichel into another save. At the other end, attacks were sporadic, with Jamie Vardy unable to make any impact on the well-organised home rearguard.
Brendan Rodgers switched to a 3-5-2 formation at the interval, withdrawing both Ademola Lookman and Harvey Barnes and introducing Daniel Amartey and Kelechi Iheanacho. However the changes did little to lift City's fortunes, as the hosts continued to exert an iron grip on the game.
With frustrations building in the stands, a section of visiting fans engaged in pitched battles with Roma stewards, prompting the intervention of baton-wielding riot police. Surreally, the beer-seller who had been serving other City supporters in the gangway a matter of yards from these disturbances, continued with his activities as if nothing was happening.
As the game meandered towards what seemed an inevitable conclusion, the Foxes finally roused themselves into an effort on target, but Maddison's effort was comfortably saved by Rui Patricio, as was a similar strike by Iheanacho shortly afterwards.
There was no surprise in seeing the hosts taking every opportunity to wind the clock down, wasting time, exaggerating every challenge and making a series of lengthy late substitutions. Mourinho may not be the all-conquering managerial force he once was, but he ensured his extensive experience of big occasions was made to count here.
Nevertheless, City had a number of setpiece opportunities in the closing stages, but Maddison – perhaps less than fully fit – was unable to make use of any of them. Indeed, Roma came close to extending their lead, when a long-range strike by Oliveira almost cost Schmeichel off guard before being fumbled behind.
The final whistle was greeted by jubilant scenes in most areas of the stadium, with home celebrations understandably prolonged, as sadly was the goading by Roma supporters in the section adjoining the away corner.
It was well past midnight local time, over an hour since the game's conclusion, when the City hordes, by now somewhat bedraggled, were finally allowed to leave the stadium, and even then, this action was accompanied by skirmishes with police.
Although some bemoaned – and not without reason - the quality of refereeing during the game, the reality was – as the bulk of travelling fans acknowledged - that Roma were the better side over the two legs. Mourinho's side showed greater hunger, desire and intensity, as well as making home advantage tell in a way City had been unable to do in the first leg.
As for the Foxes, the remaining league games will reveal how much faith this squad retains in the manager. They may also determine the extent of the changes that will be needed this summer if the club is to return to European competition – at whatever level – in the foreseeable future.

The Brazilian ran over to the dugout to celebrate his brace with his manager (Picture: Getty)Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he spoke with Roberto Firmino about his struggles in front of goal this season, with his Boxing Day celebration a ‘thank you’ for keeping the faith. The Brazilian had scored just four Premier League goals prior to the trip to Leicester City – and only once in his last 11 outings – but back-to-back goals in the Club World Cup, including the winning goal in the final, appear to have sparked him back to life. Firmino opened the scoring against Leicester with a strong header and then grabbed his brace with a powerful and precise finish in the second half as Liverpool secured a 4-0 victory. Firmino sprinted over to Klopp and jumped into his manager’s arms (Picture: Getty)The 28-year-old made a beeline for the dugout to celebrate with Klopp and the German coach revealed afterwards that Firmino has struggled away from the pitch during his barren run. He told reporters: ‘Bobby in the last three games now has scored four times, right? ‘And before that he didn’t score that often, and journalists tell me Bobby Firmino didn’t score for a while and I don’t even realise. ‘When I think about Bobby I don’t think about scoring. LIVERPOOL 3-1 ARSENAL
FT: Liverpool the only remaining side with a perfect record in the Premier League. It’s actually a new record for the club, who have now won 12 consecutive games. Arsenal were better than the 3-1 scoreline suggests and will win plenty of away matches with those kinds of performances.
93: David Luiz, never short on confidence, decides he’s going to shoot from the free-kick. It’s about 30-yards from goal… miles over.
92: Booked! Virgil van Dijk is the second booking of the afternoon when handling the ball with Alexandre Lacazette backing into him.
90: Four minutes of added time.
89: Arsenal seeing all of the ball in these closing stages but Liverpool are defending well enough. Henrik Mkhitaryan on for Matteo Guendouzi. Adam Lallana on for Roberto Firmino.
87: Alexandre Lacazette drives into the penalty area before reaching the byline. He flicks it up and subsequently appeals for a penalty for handball. Nothing doing.
LIVERPOOL 3-1 ARSENAL | TORREIRA
84: GOAL! Arsenal pull one back through substitute Lucas Torreira. It won’t see them take home any points but it displays a real sign of character.
There’s a scramble inside the Liverpool penalty area and Torreira capitalises by firing low into the corner.
83: Looks like Unai Emery is experimenting a bit with Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe on the pitch. Tottenham up next for Arsenal – could we see all three start?
80: We’re pretty-much at a walking pace now as Liverpool look to protect their clean sheet. You suspect there are more goals in this if they pressed the accelerator.
Alexandre Lacazette on for Joe Willow who, once again, has done himself proud.

75: Nice move from a tired Arsenal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finds Nicolas Pepe on the right, who tries to scoop the ball back over to the striker. James Milner spots the danger and glances it behind for a corner. Cleared.
72: Jordan Henderson spots Mohamed Salah steaming in at the far post but Bernd Leno reads it and races off his line to collect.
69: Wijnaldum off, Milner on. Jurgen Klopp sends in the veteran to make sure no silly business occurs.
66: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks like he’s through on goal after a lay-off from Nicolas Pepe but Virgil Van Dijk moves over to usher the ball back to Adrian.

63: “Mo Salah, Mo Salah, running down the wing” reverberates around Anfield. Home fans are loving this. Absolutely loving it.
Lucas Torreira replaces Dani Ceballos.
61: They are queuing up! Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane nearly trip over each other as they look to nail a fourth. The Scotsman eventually wins out but blasts it straight at Bernd Leno.
LIVERPOOL 3-0 ARSENAL | SALAH
58: GOAL! Liverpool running riot. Mohamed Salah running riot. This could be a cricket score now as the Egyptian king does what he does best.
Fabinho sends it forward and Salah leaves David Luiz for dead with a clever spin. He bears down on goal and calmly slots it beyond the outstretched Bernd Leno.

57: Liverpool toying with Arsenal now. It’s played between Mane, Firmino and Robertson, who eventually crosses for Salah to head over the crossbar.
54: So wasteful from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He breaks the offside trap and is through on goal but takes an eternity to shoot. Eventually Joel Matip gets back quickly to stab the ball from under the Arsenal striker’s feet.
52: Mohamed Salah has been directly involved in seven goals in his six Premier League appearances against Arsenal (five goals, two assists), scoring in all four of his home games against them.
51: Where do Arsenal go from here? That was literally the nightmare scenario for Unai Emery’s side at the start of this second half. Handbrake could be released now…

LIVERPOOL 2-0 ARSENAL | SALAH
49: GOAL! Mohamed Salah picks himself up and takes the penalty. He makes no mistake with a superb spot-kick right into the top left-hand corner.
50: Penalty to Liverpool! Luiz has a very Luiz moment when tugging on Salah’s shirt inside the penalty area. No real arguments from anyone.
48: Not since March 2018 has Virgil van Dijk been successfully dribbled past in the Premier League. 539 days and 50 matches later, Pepe delivers.
No messing around from the Reds, who instantly test Bernd Leno with a low cross that the goalkeeper clutches. Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were ready and waiting to pounce.

45: And we’re back underway folks. No changes for either side.
“In Pepe, Arsenal have probably had the best player on the pitch. He is a special talent. I’ve been so impressed with him,” Jamie Redknapp said on Sky Sports. He’s certainly a fan of the £72m signing.

Twitter round-up
Joey: Virgil Van Dijk dragged Matteo Guendouzi halfway across the area before Joel Matip headed in. Why isn’t VAR looking at that?
Ryan: I’m loving football right now. The days of parking the bus are well and truly beyond us. Managers have pressed the ‘accelerate and shoot’ button on every players boots!
Sully: How did Pepe miss that chance? For a player who has had a very decent 12 months he should be scoring his first goal for Arsenal.

LIVERPOOL 1-0 ARSENAL
HT: And that’s the break. Arsenal certainly had their chances – Nicolas Pepe in particular – but Liverpool take a one-goal lead in with them at the break thanks to Joel Matip.
46: Good chance wasted by Sadio Mane, who shrugs off Ainsley Maitland-Niles before heading over the crossbar. Bullied the Arsenal defender there.
45: Incidentally, that was Joel Matip’s first Premier League goal since scoring against Southampton 11 months ago. two minutes of stoppage time.
43: Arsenal just switched off for a second and they were punished. A goalless draw at the break would have priceless for Unai Emery’s side. Liverpool tails up now.
LIVERPOOL 1-0 ARSENAL | MATIP
41: GOAL! Liverpool make the breakthrough thanks to a centre-back but it’s not the one you would have expected.
Trent Alexander-Arnold sends in a cracking set-piece and there’s Matip to rise highest and unleash a bullet header past Bernd Leno.

40: Mohamed Salah backs into Granit Xhaka inside the penalty area. The Egyptian spins and leathers a half-volley wide of the target. Roberto Firmino then fizzes one straight at Sokratis.
38: Jurgen Klopp will be quite disappointed with his full-backs today. You can’t fault Andrew Robertson or Trent Alexander-Arnold’s energy levels – it’s just that final ball hasn’t been good enough on several occasions.
35: There’s a VAR check for a potential red card at Anfield. They are checking to see whether David Luiz swung an elbow in the penalty area. We can’t actually see that – and nobody in the stadium knows what’s happening either.
A Liverpool corner is eventually swung in… and Arsenal break!
Nicolas Pepe runs the length of the field, beating Andrew Robertson with absolute ease. He’s done everything perfectly until the shot – which was poor to say the least. Very impressed with the Ivorian.

33: He likes a shot does Nicolas Pepe. The winger puts it on his left and is allowed to pick his spot with a beautiful curling drive. Just wide.
30: I can’t decide whether I’m absolutely loving the bravery on display from Arsenal here – or think it’s ridiculous.
The diamond is allowing Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold acres of space – but Unai Emery’s side have exposed Liverpool’s defence on more than one occassion having sucked the full-backs forward.
27: I suppose that’s a compliment to Arsenal. Sadio Mane looks frustrated when spanking a terrible effort high into the stands. Not his finest. But that makes sense having put him in my fantasy football team this week.

24: Suicidal stuff from Arsenal. Ceballos is pinned in next to his corner flag, so decides to spray it across the penalty area where Sadio Mane gratefully collects. He fires quickly but Bernd Leno sticks it.
Lovely interchange between Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino sees the Brazilian’s effort blocked.
21: Good break from the visitors as Joe Willock strides downfield. Roberto Firmino, ever-willing, chases him all the way back to the Liverpool penalty area. Nicolas Pepe has a crack from distance but it’s not enough to cause Adrian any problems.
19: Tell you what, It’s been all Arsenal in the last five minutes. The Gunners are always looking for the long, diagonal ball up to Nicolas Pepe. The summer signing’s got plenty of space when the Liverpool full-backs are bombing forward. First goal will be crucial today.

16: There’s some optimism for Arsenal here. Nicolas Pepe looks seriously dangerous when creeping in behind this Liverpool defence. He spins away from Andrew Robertson but the referee penalises him for handball.
13: “I’ve seen these mad types of goalkeepers over the years”, Gary Neville says as Adrian needlessly races off his line to clear a ball that Virgil Van Dijk was perfectly capable of dealing with. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang collects but his lob bounces inches wide.
10: Georginio Wijnaldum momentarily forgets he’s not Lionel Messi when attempting to flick Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner in at the near post. The ball drops for a second bite, but he slices it off target.

8: Oh Arsenal… It’s brave. Not many sides would try to play out from the back against a pressing side like Liverpool – but the Gunners are going to try. It immediately fails with Sadio Mane stealing it off Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
5: Liverpool don’t often have a free week to prepare for these fixtures. Surely that can only be bad news for Arsenal.
Grant Xhaka gifts Liverpool a free-kick on the left flank. Arsenal organise themselves with a very high line. The ball is whipped behind the line but Roberto Firmino can’t connect.
3: Guess what? Liverpool are pressing Arsenal like their lives depend on it. Jurgen Klopp plans to heap pressure on Sokratis and Luiz from minute one.
Arsenal are in a diamond formation. And it’s that diamond formation that’s allowed Andrew Robertson to fly down the left and fire narrowly across goal.
