the video
aitana bonmati x barca femeni x barca!reader
summary: on international break- a video circulates online that will cause your girlfriend, and club teammates, to be concerned
warnings: mentions of abuse, angst
Tumblr media
on international break, you clashed with your coach over a situation.
you’ve realized that your national team coach was being overly aggressive towards some of the younger players– the 18 to 22 year old ones.
as the captain, you gave them a safe space to talk to you about it. you had the platform– as a 2020 ballon d’or winner, and 2 time champions league winner– to speak up about any situation that is bothering you.
even if that might piss off the “higher ups” of your national team.
after seeing your coach nearly scream, not yell, but scream at one of the youngsters on the team for not making a header during an international friendly.. you had enough.
you pulled your coach to the side and confronted him at halftime.

“hey, why did you scream at her over the failed set piece? its her debut?”
“don’t question me about my corrections.” he mumbled, looking away from you and waving at another staff member yards away.
“i will! you can’t scream at the players about their mistakes, it's affecting the team chemistry and they need to be nurtured into having experience– not screamed at. you can see that they’re SCARED to even come to training because of this.” you snapped.
this has happened for long enough.
little did you know, a few people in the distance were recording this interaction between your coach and you.
what shocked them was when the coach grabbed your arm, aggressively, and pulled you close to him so you’re just 3 feet from the left side of his body.
he squeezed your arm, purposely, which caused your face to squeeze as his physical assault caught you off guard.
“listen, you do NOT question me about my coaching! maybe if she scored that, she wouldn’t have been punished!” he said through clenched teeth, staring at you with darkened eyes and a vein nearly popping out of his forehead.
realizing that you wouldn’t let him do this to you, you smacked his hand off of your arm and sprinted off– completely shocked that he would do that to you.
the people who recorded the interaction sent the video to all news publications afterwards– the new york times, bbc, foxsports, tmz, 433– you name it.
at the end of the game, where you were benched after that confrontation before the start of the second half, everyone booed the coach.
everyone was confused– even you. at first, you assumed that your own country was booing you guys. that didn’t make sense– you guys won 3-2.
once you guys were in the dressing room, all of the fifa officials took your coach away to talk to him.
you had no idea that people recorded that assault that happened to you. some of your teammates noticed the red mark on your arm and the quietness of your voice– so they figured it had to do with the coach.
“y/n..” you turn around to see the young midfielder behind you with a sad smile.
the same 17 year old girl you defended after she was screamed over a missed header.
“hey! congrats on today.” you pulled her into a soft hug, rubbed her upper back before pulling away.
“thank you.” she smiled.
you couldn’t resent her for the moment between the coach and you– he is the problem not her.
when the national team got on the bus, the coach wasn’t there. the nice assistant coach (who has fallen to the main coaches abuse too) took his place.
your eyebrows knitted together as you saw a notification from your barcelona teammate and close friend– alexia.
ale
WHAT THE FUCK?
ale
are you okay?!!
y/n
i am?
y/n
what's going on!?
ale
there’s a video on the internet
alex
instagram.com/justwomensports….
when you clicked on the link, your face turned pale.
many people have recorded the moment between the coach and you from hours before.
you looked strong at first, until he grabbed your arm. the terrified look on your face was present until you smacked his arm away.
to say that the media was in an outrage– that would be an understatement.
almost every news publication has posted about it. there was no possible way that the coach wouldn’t be sacked for the amount of negative attention this has brought.
you didn’t want to imagine how aitana, your girlfriend, is reacting to the situation– as she keeps calling you over-and-over again.
y/n
tana, i’ll call you once i’m back in the hotel. i will explain.
aitana
i should kill him
aitana
are you okay mi amor?
y/n
i don’t know

when you clicked off of your imessages– mapi texted you in the groupchat between ingrid, her, and you.
mapi
y/n are you active?
y/n
yes, hi!
mapi
do you want me to kill that pos?
you giggle at the message- not because you want to see him dead- but the barcelona girls have their extreme way with defending their loved ones.
ingrid
maybe you shouldn’t threaten ppl mapi
ingrid
especially not now
ingrid
y/n please tell me you’re okay
mapi
or will be okay?
y/n
i don’t know how to feel about it
y/n
it happened so fast
y/n
i think my brain isn’t trying to process it. i’m scared
ingrid
call aitana
y/n
i am once i’m back in the hotel, i’m on the bus with the team right now.
after turning your phone off and looking at your phone, your national teammates on the bus were very quiet.
as they’re scrolling on their phones– they’re understanding why the mean coach isn’t on the bus anymore.
your best friend on your national team taps your shoulder and you look over at her, seeing that she finished watching the video.
“WHAT THE FUCK?” she mumbles very quietly as she gives you a heartbroken look.
“when did this happen?” she asked.
“at halftime, remember when i had to pull him outside of the dressing room to talk to him..” you say.
your best friend frowns before pulling your head into her body for a hug.
“is this why you were benched once the game started again?” she whispers.
“i believe so.”
one thing that everyone knew– your girlfriend in spain wasn’t going to let *that* slide.
the next day-- your 2023 ballon d’or winner girlfriend scored a goal in a game against another country.. she held up two fingers on her left hand and one finger on her right, dedicating her golozo for you. since you wore the number 12 on your club and national teams.
next, an important post on instagram spoke up about abuse in the community. a post that went viral alongside your situation.
aitana was quick to repost it on her story– bringing more support for you as you struggled with that traumatic moment.
before you came back to barcelona a week later, you told the “higher-ups” of your national team that if your coach stays, you would retire from international football.
you are 24 years old, so that is an extreme ultimatum.
they couldn’t afford to lose you, one of the best players in the world.
the coach was sacked, charged for assault, and you are happy about it.
in barcelona, most of the girls came to your apartment to comfort you.
alexia, her girlfriend olga, ingrid, mapi, esmee, fridolina, patri, caroline, marta, and jana were all there to give you support.
you cried for the first time about it since the incident occurred. never in your life were you treated that way.
once the girls left your house hours later, aitana stayed. well– you guys lived together so it wasn’t an option for her to leave.
with aitana, you told more details about the things you’ve seen the coach do to the team. the way he ruined the chemistry and motivation of the girls is something you’re prepared to fix with the new coach coming onto the national team.
she cuddles you and plays with your hair as you talk. refusing to leave your side for a while.
the spanish national team had their own problems, which you know about, so aitana is able to help you as you help her through her problems too.
aitana and your club teammates vows to never let someone hurt you like that again.
authors note: this has been in my drafts for over a month.

Hi writer, hope you are doing well and if you are accepting request
Requesting a barca teen who is short like aitana and may be shorter than her and the team likes to baby her or tease her good naturedly and The reader is the one who scores the winning goal for barca through a header surprising everyone
-
The match is a big one. The kind where the crowd feels too loud and too quiet all at once, and the floodlights could probably fry an egg if you held one close enough. You’re on the bench—standard practice when you’re 5’2” and look more like you belong at a school assembly than on a pitch. Aitana, the second shortest on the team, is on the pitch, legs pumping like pistons.
“Looking for your big sister?” Mapi teases, leaning back on the bench beside you. “Or maybe your carer?”
“She’s not my sister,” you mutter, flicking the grass off your boots. You’ve heard all the jokes before. Aitana calls you “her shadow,” and the rest of the team has gleefully adopted the dynamic.
“Could’ve fooled me,” Patri chimes in, tying her ponytail for what must be the fifth time today. “You even walk like her”
“No, she skips,” Mapi adds, making an exaggerated bouncing motion with her shoulders. “It’s very cute”
You glower at them, crossing your arms. Cute. As if that’s what you signed up for—endless ribbing and being treated like someone’s younger cousin at a wedding. You’re here to win. To play. To prove you’re not just a mascot with a squad number.
“Alright, you’re in,” the coach says suddenly, and you spring to your feet so fast you almost trip over your bootlaces.
“What, her?” Mapi exclaims, clearly delighted. “Coach, do you want me to carry her onto the pitch?”
You shoot her a look that could cut glass and jog out before she can say anything else.
The game is tied—1-1—and the tension in the stadium feels like a living, breathing thing. You’re darting between defenders, trying not to let the adrenaline make your legs feel like jelly.
Aitana passes you the ball with a grin, whispering something as you pass her by. “Don’t get lost out there, pequeña”
You don’t respond, just shoot her a glare over your shoulder and keep moving.
Then comes the moment. A cross from Patri so perfect it feels like it was gift-wrapped. The defender marking you is taller—of course—but you don’t care. You jump. And for a second, you’re airborne, defying every height-related joke you’ve ever heard.
The header is clean, sharp, and perfectly placed. The ball rockets into the back of the net, and the crowd erupts.
You land with a thud and turn, wide-eyed, as your teammates descend on you like you’ve just cured cancer.
“Was that—” Aitana starts, staring at you like she’s not sure whether to laugh or scream.
“A header,” Mapi finishes for her, running up behind you and hoisting you into the air. “The short one scored a header!”
You’re laughing, almost dizzy from the chaos, but you can’t help the smug grin spreading across your face.
“You know,” you say, as Mapi sets you down, “maybe it’s time you lot stopped calling me small”
Aitana raises an eyebrow, crossing her arms. “Sure. Right after you grow another five inches”
You roll your eyes, but there’s no malice in it. The teasing doesn’t bother you so much now—not when the scoreboard says 2-1, and your name is written next to it.

The Two Roords (Jill Roord x Reader)
Tumblr media
warnings: ⚠️swearing, fighting⚠️
a/n: based off this request here
prompt: in which reader and jill are secretly married and both play for barca. but when their team tries to set them up with different people, they both loose control in different ways.
You would think that two players on the same team with the name Roord would make the Barcelona girls question something. But no, Jill and you were both dutch, and so your teammates just assumed that Roord was a popular last name in the Netherlands. Jill played with J.Roord and you the same but with the first letter of your name. No one questioned anything, not for one second did anyone think that maybe, just maybe, you and Jill were on your second year of marriage.
You and Jill came as a package deal, which made it that Jonatan knew about your marriage to Jill, but he was accepting of your desire to keep your marriage on the down low. Jonatan knew, Jill's family knew, and that was it. The rest of the team just thought you guys had both come separately in the transfer window, which made sense.
You had always wanted to take Jill's last name, and you legally did after your elopement on a beach in Hawaii.
Now, you lived in a small, but homey apartment in the center of Barcelona. You and Jill had fit in right away, and the team was immediately welcoming of the two Roord's.
Now, almost a year since your contract signing with Barcelona, and longer since your marriage, everything was going amazing. Other than the fact that some of the spaniards were getting restless, and were wanting desperately to get you both into a relationship. Ingrid, Lucy and Keira had taken it upon themselves to find the perfect person in terhe squad for both of you. And somehow, that meant they wanted Jill and Jana together, and you and Claudia Pina together.
But, despite this, Mapi couldn't help but be intrigued by you, and flirty with you, and so was Claudia.
Meanwhile, Jana only had eyes for Jill.
Training on Sunday morning was early, and annoying, but you arrived to the center in a separate car then Jill to not arise suspicion and media attention. You had a coffee in hand and signed a few things before entering the training center. Jill was a morning person and so even on the early 7:30 am training sessions, Jill was there at 6:45. And Jana knew that.
You walked onto the pitch to immediately see Jana and Jill playing around. They were teasingly pushing each other, trying to meg each other and just being all around flirty. You watched them with a tense jaw, not hearing Mapi coming from behind you. "Buen día, y/n," Mapi said, placing her hand on the small of your back. You turned your head to look at her and smiled, deciding to forget the way that your wife and your teammate were acting. Instead, you chose to think that if Jill would flirt with Jana, there was nothing wrong with you flirting with Mapi and maybe Claudia. If she goes low... you go lower. But Jill hadn't meant to go low.
The first hour of training was dedicated to possession games, then you did 1v1's, shooting, headers and Jonatan decided to finish with a 9v9 scrimmage before heading inside for a quick lift session. There were two teams with subs, but the starters on your team were you, Mapi, Asisat, Aitana, Claudia, Irene, Caroline, Sandra and Emma. A strong team, but you would be facing Jill to start. The game was hot and heavy. Well, as hot and heavy as a game could be without slide tackles being aloud, Jonatan was clear in not wanting anyone to get injured.
The game was set to only be 45 minutes, and bu the 35 minute it was still 0-0. And then your time came. Mapi passed it from the back up to Aitana who drove down the wing and crossed it in. You came flying, throwing yourself at the ball so that your head made contact with the ball. For a header, the power was incredible. With the ball in the net, you ran and hugged Aitana before jumping into Mapi's arms. It was just a scrimmage, yes, but you were competitive.
Mapi caught you, and not meaning anything by it, ended up with her hands on your ass, just because she was holding you up. Everything was a blur after that. You saw Jill storming towards you both and then felt Mapi placing you on the ground. Then, you took in your wife's look of fury directed to María. "Get your hands off my wife!"
It all happened stupid quick. One second Mapi was looking shocked and the other she was being pushed onto the ground. Jonatan rushed over and stepped between both girls as you quickly pulled Jill away. "JILL! What the hell!" you yelled, your hands hollering her biceps to keep her from running back towards the confused spanish defender. Mapi didn't even look angry, just incredibly taken aback. "I'm sorry... wife?!" Jana said, looking back and forth between you and Jill.
Both of you ignored her, your eyes still locked on each other. "That was not fucking cool, babe," you said, tears specking your eyes. It was known that you were quiet, and not so great with emotions. So you kept the jealousy you felt of Jill and Jana's flirting inside of you, but it was all coming back up now. "Her hands were on your ass!" Jill scowled. "Yeah! Accidentally! All youve been doing is flirting with Jana! No! No do not give me that 'what are you talking about' look," you told her.
This could not have been more unprofessional. Everyone was watching, not knowing what to say, even Jonatan who was pretty stern seemed to think it was better to just let the situation play out. "Come on... we don't flirt! We just-" Jill tried to defend herself but you then and there noticed the looks of everyone and felt observed, watched, judged. But they weren't judging you, no one was, but the voice in your brain was telling you they were.
"Don't. I-" you didn't know what to say, so you shrugged off your bib and walked away towards the inside of the training center towards the changing room. Everyone watched you leave, Jill looking at her feet. "I didn't know... I didn't mean to flirt, Jill," Jana said, trying to look into Jill's eyes. "No, I know, I'm sorry its not your fault. I'm really sorry, Mapi, I had no right to come at you like that," Jill said, heading towards Mapi. "Its nothing, it's fine," Mapi said, gently hugging Jill. "Go get your... wife... apparently," Mapi smiled, nodding towards your figure disappearing into the training center.
The second you got into the locker room, you didn't know what to do. You wanted to scream, but you were to quiet for that, you wanted to cry, because your biggest secret was revealed and you didn't know how to cope with that, but you were too scared of anyone seeing you. So before you knew it, you had swung your fist into the wall, leaving an indent and leaving you hobbling and holding your fist.
(Next scene is in dutch)
"Fuck! Why did I do that?" you whimpered, looking at your knuckles and knowing there would be a bruise tomorrow. "Did you punch the wall again?" a voice asks, making you turn around. "You know I did," you told Jill, sitting down at your cubby and placing your head in your hands. "I apologized to Mapi," Jill said, sitting next to you and rubbing her hand up and down your back, under your training jersey. "Thank you," you answered, not making eye contact with her. "I didn't mean to make you jealous... baby, I just didn't know what to do. I just thought Jana was being friendly. You know how the spaniards are, they would make out with you and say it was just a way of saying hello or something," Jill said, making you let out a small snort of laughter. "I know. And Mapi genuinely just caught me because I jumped up on her awkwardly, I promise," you answered, looking up at her with soft eyes. "I know. I know. I’m just-" Jill started saying, scooching closer to you and putting her arm around her. You rested your head on her shoulder as you cut her off.
"Easily jealous?" you said, finishing her sentence. "Yes. But mostly, i’m just so in love with you," she said, stroking your hair.
"And I am all yours my love. All yours. We’re married, okay, we are married." I want no one but you.
Jill kissed your head, and then you looked up at her to have her kiss you. You savoured her lips on yours, thankful for the familiarity, and for how right it felt.

I am just imagining about Spain USA final in the Olympics and the score is 0-0 and it is a corner for Spain and the last kick before going for penalties and when alexia takes the corner , our little star scores a header goal to win the Olympic gold...
The crowd goes absolutely wild but her teammates go wilder. Alexia cannot believe she managed to get that corner ball in the back of the net, Aitana is jumping on her back and the whole team is celebrating their absolute hardest, but la estrella is just happy she didn’t end up in the net as well

Madrid CFF 0-2 FC Barcelona Femeni: Player Ratings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photo courtesy: FC Barcelona Femeni X In the world of football, anticipation often builds before the first whistle. For FC Barcelona Femeni fans, the wait for the first match of the season felt even longer due to unexpected player strikes. However, when the day finally arrived, the anticipation was met with jubilation as the Catalan team emerged victorious with a 2-0 win in an away match against Madrid CFF, securing a 2-0 victory. Goals from Caroline Graham Hansen and Asisat Oshoala secured the three points for the Blaugrana in their season opener. Now, let's delve into the player ratings and dissect how each player performed in Madrid CFF 0-2 FC Barcelona Femeni.
Cata Coll: 7
fresh off an impressive showing in the just concluded 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, started between the goalposts for Barcelona Femeni. Throughout the match, she had little to do, as Madrid CFF struggled to create significant scoring opportunities. Cata Coll maintained her composure and never really looked troubled, making it a quiet day for her.
Lucy Bronze: 7.5
the experienced defender started the game with a bang, delivering a dangerous cross into the box in the opening minute that nearly resulted in a goal. Bronze not only excelled offensively but also demonstrated her defensive prowess. She won back possession effectively when she lost the ball and managed to mark and contain Kundananji. However, it's worth noting that she received a yellow card during the match. Irene Paredes: 7.5 known for her reliability in defense, didn't disappoint. She stood firm in the backline, thwarting Madrid CFF's counterattacks and through balls. Paredes showcased her defensive prowess with 2 clearances, 2 blocked shots, and 1 interception, a ground duel along with two aerial duels won.
Mapi Leon: 7.5
Mapi Leon's impact on the game was evident from the start. Her well-taken corner early in the match caused problems for Madrid CFF's defense. Throughout the game, Leon contributed to the team's attack with precise passes and excellent crosses into the opposition box. Her defensive contributions included 1 clearance and 1 interception. Notably, she created 1 big chance and completed 4 accurate crosses out of 8 attempts.
Ona Batlle: 8.5
Ona Batlle made her presence felt as she played through the left-back position. She confidently drove down the left wing, delivering dangerous crosses into the box and creating goal-scoring opportunities. Batlle fit seamlessly into the team, despite it being her debut for the garnet and blue. Her standout moment was an exquisite assist to Asisast Oshoala for Barcelona Femeni's second goal. With 2 key passes, 1 big chance created, and 1 assist, Batlle was instrumental in the victory. Batlle's pinpoint assist to Oshoala for the second goal demonstrated her understanding of her teammates' movements. She also forced a save from the Madrid CFF keeper with a well-taken shot in the second half.
Aitana Bonmati: 7
Aitana Bonmati had a relatively quiet first half, struggling to get much involvement with the ball. However, she maintained composure and kept things tidy. Although she didn't impact the game as much as she would have liked, her presence remained felt.
Ingrid Engen: 8
Ingrid Engen came close to opening the scoring with a header, narrowly missing the target. She played a vital role in the middle of the park, providing passing options and dropping deep to receive balls. Engen's defensive contributions were equally impressive, as she won crucial duels for the team. Her stats included 4 out of 5 ground duels won, 2 out of 3 aerial duels won, 1 clearance, 1 interception, 4 tackles, and 2 key passes. Her ability to provide passing options, defensive coverage, and crucial duels won demonstrated her value to the team.
Patri Guijarro: 7.5
Patri Guijarro intercepted balls effectively and worked tirelessly to regain possession for the team in the opposition half. Although she didn't see much of the ball to influence the game significantly, Guijarro held her own in her position. Guijarro's performance was solid, considering her limited time on the ball.
Caroline Graham Hansen: 8
Caroline Graham Hansen dazzled in the forward line, fluidly rotating positions with her teammates. Her beautiful finish opened the scoring, leaving the Madrid CFF goalkeeper with no chance to react. Graham Hansen's creativity shone through with 1 big chance created, 7 out of 18 accurate crosses, 6 key passes, and 1 shot on target.
Alexia Putellas: 7
Alexia Putellas took on the role of the number 9, pressing high relentlessly for the team. Although she missed a couple of chances, her efforts couldn't be faulted. Her header from Aitana's cross was inches away from opening the scoring in the second half. Later in the game, she dropped into midfield.
Claudia Pina: 7.5
Claudia Pina's dynamic presence in the attack was a continuous threat to Madrid CFF. She alternated between left and central positions, posing a continuous goal threat. Her footwork and precise pass assisted in the opening goal scored by Caroline Graham Hansen. Pina's dynamic presence added depth to Barcelona's attack before she was substituted for Mariona Caldentey. Her performance was marked by a solid 1 assist. Substitutes - Mariona Caldentey: Not rated - Mariona played through the left-wing forward position and combined effectively with Ona Batlle on the left wing, although she didn't have many opportunities to impact the game. - Marta Torrejon: Not rated - Marta held her position well but didn't have significant involvement in the game. - Asisat Oshoala: 7.5 - Asisat Oshoala was brought on as a substitute, and she wasted no time in making her presence felt. Within minutes of entering the game, she found the back of the net, scoring a crucial goal to seal the win. - Bruna Vilamala: Not rated - Bruna was brought in late in the game and contributed with her energetic pressing but didn't have much else to do. - Esmee Brugts: Not rated - Esmee made her Barcelona Femeni debut late in the game but had limited involvement. FC Barcelona Femeni began their season on a high note with a 2-0 victory over Madrid CFF. The team displayed resilience and a well-rounded performance, with standout contributions from Ona Batlle and Caroline Graham Hansen. Her defensive work was faultless. I'm sure it's posted somewhere but her clearance at approx 30 mins was one of the most critical clearances of the match. The comms praised her for it!
Also just come across this on Twitter! Such a nasty fall, I'm just relieved she got right back up again. https://x.com/mapiieon/status/1794504504878235787?s=46&t=gP6hvjzvfMql9vZLSSJhoA
The header? Yeah that was crucial! And the two clearances just before 90min. For me the best players were Lucy, Aitana, Keira, CGH. They were instrumental in the win.

Barcelona: 2024 UEFA Women's Champions League Winners
Tumblr media
Second-half strikes from Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas won Barcelona their third UEFA Women's Champions League title in four years as they beat Lyon 2-0 in front of over 50,000 supporters at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.
Prior to this encounter, Lyon had defeated Barcelona in all four previous matches between the teams, including the 2019 and 2022 finals.
But it was a case of fifth time lucky for Jonatan Giráldez's team as the holders asserted their recent dominance in this competition with an assured performance on Spanish soil, spearheaded by the brilliant Bonmatí, who once again proved to be the difference-maker.
It was Barça who started on the front foot, and Caroline Graham Hansen set up Salma Paralluelo early on following a mazy run, only for the Spanish forward's effort to be well saved by Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler.
Despite Giráldez's team enjoying the majority of possession, OL remained a threat, and Barça defender Lucy Bronze was fortunate to see her header skim off her own crossbar from a corner.
Just before the interval, Graham Hansen did brilliantly to burst into the box, but she could only drag a shot just wide from a tight angle to ensure there would be no first-half breakthrough as a tight, evenly matched period ended level.
Lyon captain Wendie Renard, playing in her 11th Women's Champions League final, had the first clear chance after the break, though she could only scoop her shot over the bar after the ball had fallen kindly for her in the box.
It was a case of cometh the hour, cometh the hero for Barcelona, as Mariona Caldentey's clever pass set away Bonmatí down the left in the 63rd minute, and the No14's dinked effort beat Endler via a deflection to spark delirium among the majority of the crowd.
Lyon pushed for a response, and the competition's top scorer for this season, Kadidiatou Diani, went close with a curling effort narrowly over the bar.
In the closing stages, however, substitute Putellas put the gloss on the victory with a wonderful crashing finish, and Barça celebrated joyously with their outgoing coach Giráldez as they earned a fourth trophy in what has been another sensational campaign.
Visa Player of the Match: Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona) "Influenced the game all over the pitch in and out of possession. High progressive passes, high ball recoveries and scored a great goal." UEFA Technical Observer panel
Graham Hunter, Barcelona reporter So much of the talk from Barcelona's staff and players leading up to this final was about "maturing", "managing matches better" and "learning from bitter defeat". All those things needed to be true here. The finalists were so well matched, so full of tactical discipline and cleverness. It meant that before the twinkle-toed brilliance of Bonmatí could make its wonderful impact, there needed to be patience, calm and cold-blooded control, all leading up to an eruption of talent. Then an eruption of joy.
Vanessa Tomaszewski, Lyon reporter In the first half, Lyon struggled with Barcelona's possession. Despite creating opportunities, the French side made technical errors and lost possession easily. After the break, Bonmatí capitalised on Lyon's defensive gaps to score and Lyon failed to regain control, with wider gaps appearing in their defence. Putellas sealed the victory in the final minutes as, despite their best efforts, Lyon tasted defeat in a stadium dominated by Barcelona supporters.
Jonatan Giráldez, Barcelona coach: "It was an incredible game. I am really happy, and it's one of the best days of my life, for sure. We did an amazing job. I am very proud of all of them. When I decided in December to leave at the end of the season, people thought the team's performances might dip. We showed that wasn't the case today. An amazing performance, and a deserved victory."
Lucy Bronze, Barcelona defender: "We knew we needed to be a club that made history. It's not easy, it's hard to win it once, but to do it back to back, Lyon showed how difficult it is. This team's finally done that. I think we go down in history as one of the best teams in Europe."
Sonia Bompastor, Lyon coach: The disappointment is great, and losing a final is very hard, but Barça played a great game. Our lack of offensive efficiency has cost us, but I will need more time to analyse it. Congratulations to Barcelona on winning this final. They're a great team. We would have needed to play a perfect game to win but, above all, we should have been more efficient in attack in order to get a better result."
Daniëlle van de Donk, Lyon midfielder: "I'm very emotional. Nobody likes to lose a final and we were here to win it. It's a shame we didn't create enough. Barcelona deserved the win, but I'm proud of my team; we gave it our all. I wish we could have pressed them a bit more, as I think that could have made a difference."
Key stats Barcelona have become only the fourth club to successfully defend the title after Umeå (in 2004), Lyon (in 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020) and Wolfsburg (in 2014). The Spanish side's third European crown leaves them behind only Lyon (eight) and Frankfurt (four). Bonmatí scored for the second time in a Champions League final, after also netting in the 2021 win against Chelsea. Putellas struck in her third Champions League final, following goals in the 2021 and 2022 editions. Barcelona have become the first Spanish women's side to claim a quadruple, having also won the league, Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup this season. Lyon's Kadidiatou Diani finished as the competition's top scorer this season with eight goals. Wendie Renard has played a part in all Lyon's 11 finals. She has been captain for seven of them. Line-ups Barcelona: Coll; Bronze, Paredes, Engen, Rolfö (Batlle 67); Bonmatí, Walsh (Putellas 90+2), Guijarro; Graham Hansen, Paralluelo (Brugts 85), Caldentey (Pina 90+2)
