Where the women in the Grant family were all out on the holiday spirit, Ryder and his dad were much less so. They did gifts and went to the parties but beyond that there wasn’t much festive about them. They didn’t eat, drink, and bleed the damn holiday like the rest of their pack tended to do this time of year. Over-the-top was an understatement.

All dressed and ready to go before the rest of his family, Ryder drove over to Gina’s house a bit early. The party wouldn’t start for another hour or so but he wanted to see her before the chaos descended upon them. She was still getting ready when he showed up so he just hung out in her bedroom with her while she did so.

“I think I’m gonna do it,” he was telling her as she rummaged through her ridiculously large walk-in closet for a pair of shoes, “Try out, I mean. For the Somerset Patriots. I like coaching at the high school but my dream has always been the Yankees. The Patriots are only minor league but that’s one step closer to being in the big leagues and they’re affiliated with the Yankees so that’s even better. If I can get myself a tryout, I know I can do it. I know I can.”

Gina hummed her support which earned a rare smile from him. They didn’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of things and they tended to argue a fair amount but that love and support never wavered between them. She was the pure sunshine to his storm cloud. In their own way, they were a lot like his parents. They just worked.

Still talking about tryouts when Gina stepped back out of her closet, he came to a pause as he saw what she held up in her hand for him to see. One look at her face and he knew what she intended before she could even speak it out loud. “No. Absolutely not.” He said firmly.

“Come on, just wear the Santa hat for a little bit?”

“No! I’ll look like a fucking idiot.” He argues before she brought out that little pouty face and puppy dog eyes thing she tended to do. “You know, you can’t just do that every time you don’t get your way.” The pout didn’t waver though because she didn’t back down easy either. “Babe, stop it. I hate when you do that.”

That was the point though. He hated it because he was weak to it. It didn’t always work with him but it did have a ridiculously high success rate. Something he hated even more about the pout and pleading eyes.

Sighing in annoyance, he gave her a look that said he wasn’t at all happy about this. “One hour, got it? I’m not wearing that stupid thing all night.”

Like, he meets her while trying to escape his ex and she agrees to marry him instead since her fiancé admitted to not loving her except for her money. But she needs to be married to keep the house and he wants to be human, so marriage of inconvenience but they end up liking each other and stage ghost stuff for her show. Something something he lives or she dies and we get a dramatic ending.

y'all sleeping on Astarion/Lae'zel bc this moment is so...the way the flippant demeanor drops and he doesn't hesitate to call her out for sticking with her version of Cazador like their relationship is so underrated fr...

sitting down writing this bullshit like let me peel it like an onion a bit and elaborate why this pairing is fascinating to me

It's really interesting how during the most cathartic, life-altering moment in Astarion's questline, the reactions of the other companions are more about the moral wrongness/guilt of sacrificing innocent lives. Lae'zel doesn't do that and instead relates to his hurt.

She knows what's he's feeling, the lack of control, the unfairness of being powerless for too long. This is a woman who just found out her entire life purpose was built on lies, discarded and hunted by her own people after outliving her usefulness, and groomed to basically die for an insane power-hungry lich queen. She knows all too well that power isn't always real freedom. Her first instinct is to empathize with Astarion to steer him away from his hate and resentment.

Astarion/Lae'zel is so interesting to me because they're such a classic "can we make each other worse or make a better person out of the other?".

They both have genuine appreciation for violence and respect each other's ruthlessness. Astarion was used as a weapon of seduction while Lae'zel was of warfare. Sex with people is meaningless and not real intimacy for them, and while both have little understanding/experience of interpersonal relationships beyond the physical, they still feel and love very deeply. They have no frame of reference for things like friendship and warmth, but they badly want all of that and more, even if they don't know it yet.

In-game they can sleep with each other, which is basically the foundation of the normal Tav/Astarion romance. Lae'zel saw him during combat and got horny, who knows. Astarion who's used to luring people with his charms, takes up Lae'zel's blunt offer because she's a strong hardened warrior that can provide protection and be a worthy ally, and he doesn't know how to say no. Navigating the complications between one who wants to be seen beyond as a sex object, and one who comes from a totally alien culture with no concept of love/family/connections and only sex is honestly really compelling to me. It's a transactional, mutually beneficial thing with no emotional expectations. Once you get past the skeevy rockiness of their early relationship, I really like the idea of them slowly seeing something past the exterior and realizing they may have harshly misjudged the other, an unspoken friendship blooms, and in comes the realization that they are essentially loners longing for kindness and a comforting touch in the most desperate of situations.

Lae'zel is prideful, direct, has no sense of courtship talk, and doesn't hold back her thoughts the slightest--she's not sweet/agreeable and what you see is really what you get, which I imagine would be disarming for Astarion who's used to vacuous flattery and has difficulty trusting others. But she's also insanely protective, passionate, loyal, and an initiator-- every romance scene is triggered by her first and she's always showing effort towards her relationships, which would mesh well with Astarion who does need someone to nudge him.

She doesn't purposely suppress her feelings, she's just simply at loss at how to express them sometimes due to her wildly different upbringing. She stops the sparring match you agree to and an easy vulnerability slips instantly out of her: "I don't want to hurt you. I want to protect you, and for you to protect me." and "Thus far I've taunted you, devoured you, battled you. Now I want more than anything to soothe you." are romantic as fuck and Astarion of all people really needs to hear that tbh.

Astarion is also someone who struggles with reinforcing his boundaries, and a key theme in Lae'zel's romance is that she encourages and wants you to challenge her and learn to stand your ground. It's not gentlest method, but hey, relationships are about having to make an effort to learn each other's language.

I think he also would take pleasure "educating her on the matters of Fay-run" (I believe there's a whole banter with him teasing her and teaching her pet names) and would get a kick out of coaxing Lae'zel out of her shell with her shyness at showing public affection, and making her blush. Also it simply would be fucking funny to see Astarion who's used to easy seduction, trying to pass a persuasion check just to get a smooch and generally having to work to earn regular kisses from Lae'zel lmfaooo

Lae'zel also initially struggles to see her chains as chains. When she learns about Vlaakith's betrayal, she copes instantly through denial and shuts it down. Astarion is NOT having it and calls her out, he knows her well enough to recognize that she would value blunt honesty above all.

I imagine he also despises her lack of self-preservation, the way her entire identity is tied to duty and being in service of others, and doesn't understand her desire to still help/liberate the people that want her dead and are hunting her down. He wants to make this duty-bound soldier realize that looking out for herself, and putting herself first may not be the worst thing in the world.

They're so similar to each other but are also polar opposites in some ways that make a more equal, balanced romance I think. It's not a simple, one-sided, feel-good "she/he can fix her/him" fantasy because both of them have to earn each other's love, actually cut through the other's flaws, and actively motivate each other to be better versions of themselves.

They're not at all the other's ideal guiding hand. It's rough, jagged, and imperfect, but that's how healing goes. It's so far from being the healthiest relationship -- but even if their belief systems differ, their moral compass does often align. I imagine it's a slight relief for them to have a partner where there would be less shame and judgment when they expectedly, occasionally slip up and fall into their bad habits.

Also, man, the "You showed me the betweens and beyonds. Beyond war and peace, beyond passion and obsession, most importantly, you showed me freedom.", "First you were my wound, now you were my cure.", "But you saw something else in me - someone else I could be. Someone who could break the cycle of power and terror that started centuries ago.." lines really hit hard when applied to them.

Of course, they can also make each other worse, feed into the other's negative traits that will bring out the worst part of themselves. It's this duality of their pairing that is very interesting to explore, the way it can steer in either direction because it's an intense, fraught relationship at its core.

It had become a sort of routine, the first night after they all came back to Hogwarts after spending the holidays apart. After the train ride, and the banquet, when they closed the door of their dorm, they kicked off their shoes and gathered on James’s bed. There, Sirius finally let the cheery mask he had worn since that morning drop and nestled in James’s arms, James delicately passing a hand in his hair. Remus kneeled at the bottom of the bed and slowly rolled up Sirius’s trousers, doing his best not to grimace at the sight of the new wounds appearing on the back of Sirius’s calves, and delicately applied a healing pomade Poppy gave him every Full, before bandaging them. Peter then carefully measured the right amount of drops of the Sleeping Draught he had brewed to give Sirius a good, dreamless night of sleep without knocking him out immediately. After that they all relaxed back on the pillows, or on James’s chest in Sirius’s case, and played the Time-Turner game.

“If I had a Time-Turner,” Peter was saying in that moment, “I would travel back and meet the founders of Hogwarts.”

“That would be cool,” Remus agreed. “I wonder how different they were to how they’ve been pictured in History.”

“I’m a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin, according to family lore,” Sirius yawned, the Sleeping Draught evidently close to achieving its goal. “So he must have been insanely hot too.”

“Of course, Pads,” James smiled, patting him on the head.

Remus caught himself nodding and stopped immediately, but not before Peter shot him a knowing look and he turned away, feeling his cheeks heat up. Damn that stupid crush of his on Sirius fucking Black of all people.

“If I had a Time-Turner,” James went on, “I would travel back and watch a Quidditch game when McGonagall played Chaser for Gryffindor.”

“That would be awesome!” Peter exclaimed. “Also, can you imagine her at our age?”

There was a moment of silence, then they all shook their heads laughing. Sirius managed to yawn mid-laugh and ended up closing his eyes, his nose buried  in James’s shirt.

“If I had a Time-Turner,” Remus said, “I would go back and meet Merlin himself.”

“I kind of imagine him like Dumbledore in a way. Maybe you would find out they’re related,” James smiled, moving his hand in Sirius’s hair. “Pads? Do you want to keep playing or are you asleep?”

“If I had a Time-Turner,” Sirius mumbled without even opening his eyes, “I would travel back and stop my mother and my Uncle Cygnus from murdering my Uncle Alphard, so that he could live on and take me and Regulus in.”

A stunned silence followed, the only sound Sirius’s snores. They looked at each other, eyes wide, each wondering if what they had just heard was true, each of them knowing deep down it was. Nothing was past the so-called Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, and they were well placed to know not even their own members were safe. Remus’s hands balled into fists as James’s arms closed protectively around Sirius’s sleeping form.

“If I had a Time-Turner, I would go back and blast both Orion and Walburga Black out of existence,” Remus whispered.

He swallowed, his eyes moving from Sirius’s bandaged calves to his face, finally serene in his sleep. Peter leaned closer and silently pried Remus’s hands open just before he could break the skin.

“Unfortunately,” Remus went on, his voice trembling, “they did manage to make one of the things I love the most in this world and I would never want to lose him.”

He was grateful his friends chose just to nod and smile at him.

losing my mind over teru being surprised that he was unhappy with the arranged marriage.

he just assumed this version of himself would be happy marrying aoi. which leads us to the assumption that if in our timeline he was engaged to aoi, he would be happy. so we can assume he DOES have a crush on her, or at least enjoys her company enough that he wouldn't be mad about marrying her. which leads me to believe that the reason why he didn't enjoy the date with aoi was not that he doesn't like her, but that he doesn't like this version of her, becasue it's not his version of her. because she was acting way different than how she normally does with him, and because she acted with what semeed like unearned intimacy.

he doesn't feel uneasy because he dislikes her, he feels uneasy because this isn't the aoi that he knows, the one he likes. and he was happy when he realized that she doesn't like him because that's more like his timeline's aoi, the aoi who is in love with akane, the aoi he can never have, but admires from a distance, never making the mistake of getting too close because it would only hurt him when she inevitable becomes official with akane.

i think of it like if you gave someone a clone that looks and sounds like their crush, but was seemingly head over heels in love with them for no reason. sure, some may like it for some time, but it's ultimately not the real thing: its not the person they love. and they didn't put in the work to make them like them, or had any real intimacy, so the clone's attraction seems fake. so, they eventually won't enjoy it.
