I have given into peer pressure.
Below the cut is my un-referenced, not proofread, off-the-cuff thoughts on the main JJK characters and their tendencies to have traits that contradict themselves, which not only makes them more rounded characters but also creates a really interesting situation in which characters have mirrors and foils not only with other characters, but also with themselves.
The point of this post is that the characters in JJK are complex. None of them are one-trick ponies and all of them contain multitudes and have, at least once, contradicted themselves and their beliefs.
Might be spoilery? I tried to keep it vague enough that it shouldn't be, but read at your own risk if you're anime only, I guess.
The Obvious One: Gojo
Gojo is "the strongest." It's debatable, I think, whether or not being "strong" is a personality trait, but he makes it his defining personality trait. (And I'm not here to do a Gojo character study, so for my purposes, it will be viewed as one.) Obviously, The Strongest is a title given to him by others, but he fully owns it and believes it. This is his identity; it's how he views himself, how he handles himself, and it is a preceding reputation that he gladly leans into. It's not a mask he hides behind, it's a flag he proudly displays on his ship to warn others of exactly who they're dealing with.
It makes sense, then, that Gojo's self-contradiction is that he has the biggest, most obvious weaknesses of all the characters in JJK. The first of these weaknesses is his knowledge of how strong he is. Toji exploits that weakness in the Hidden Inventory arc, and it almost costs Gojo is life. His second weakness is, very simply, Geto. Kenjaku exploits that weakness during Shibuya. Interestingly, Geto is a victim of Gojo's first weakness (Gojo is so self-assured that he seems to extend that assurance to the people around him, thinking that they are "as gods" like him just for being in his presence, and therefore he does not pay mind to Geto's spiraling), and exploits his second. He, better than anyone else, knows that he is Gojo's weakness, and he uses that knowledge to do everything he does before and during JJK 0 without repercussions.
Gojo is framed by himself and by many characters within JJK as being the "savior" of the jujutsu world, but in many ways he was, in fact, its downfall - because of his strength, and because of his weaknesses.
The Main One: Yuuji
Yuuji is the king of contradictions to me. Not all of it is within himself, and in fact a lot of it occurs because a large part of the plot is happening to him instead of the other way around, but he has one dichotomy that I do think is All Him. Yuuji defines himself as a cog - in his thoughts, he has been used and beaten down for evil already, so why not just be used for good as well. He thinks of himself as expendable and easily replaced; a foot soldier in a war being fought by titans. At some point, his goal stopped being to follow his grandfather's last request and instead turned into the simple act of persevering for as long as he can just in case anyone may have need of him. In a way, his outlook and perspective on everything became rather bleak and inhuman - quite literally, as, again, he views himself as nothing more than a cog.
And yet, for someone who has claimed his only purpose is to be used to kill Sukuna, everything Yuuji does is so achingly desperately human and is born out of his own desires to save people. Every other sorcerer has a CT or a fighting style that disconnects them from their foe - be that ranged attacks or weaponry - but Yuuji uses his fists. It's raw and almost savage in a way that is unavoidably intimate and human. He says, "Use me," (and, don't get me wrong, he is used) but even the act of offering himself negates the connotations that revolve around being used and shines such a lovely warm human light on him.
Yuuji doesn't push people away. The other "strong" characters isolate (Gojo has infinity, Yuuta literally fucks off from the narrative, Geto fucks off from jujutsu society, etc.), but Yuuji hoards people and connections (and yes, those become weaknesses, but the thing is: they become strengths, too). Sukuna takes Megumi away from him, but that just makes Yuuji more determined to kill Sukuna and get Megumi back. Everything he does is out of love, and he has a drive to do what he has to in order to save (or avenge) the people he keeps close. That's not exactly cog-like behavior.
The Fandom Discourse: Megumi
In my opinion, of all the characters (but especially the first-years), Megumi is the logical character. Especially when it comes to his job as a sorcerer (fighting and killing curses). He is knowledgeable about the world of sorcery, the most book-smart of the first-years, and he is smart and methodical when he fights.
He is also the only character who has openly admitted that he really only cares about saving the people he wants to save, as opposed to the general rhetoric of saving everyone. He's selfish, and he's not shy about it. Even he doesn't try to rationalize it; it's just part of who he is. Logical, methodical, smart, but also deeply, truly, selfish when it comes to where and how he expends his energy and efforts.
And yet, he is also the character who is most willing to die. Now, before half the fandom jumps down my throat, I don't mean to say that he wants to die or that he is constantly trying to - I'm just saying that he is willing to. (Obviously, Yuuji is also a character who is willing to die, but Yuuji is only willing to do so if it would also kill Sukuna, and he is determined to stay alive until such a time. Megumi, on the other hand, doesn't have a similar end-goal ultimatum for death). Yes, he comes at dying from a logical point of view, and yes, he only ever brings martyrdom into the equation if he feels he has no other option, but he has no hesitation when he reaches that point. And you (he) can rationalize self-sacrifice as much as you want to, but that is a very emotionally driven response, regardless of the situation. It's a last stand not only for himself, but for his friends, his family, the world. It's the end of the line for him, and it's something he is willing to do if it means taking out his opponent and making the world safer for everyone else - not just for his "select" people.
He is willing to run away from a fight he cannot win, but he is also willing to do something that he knows for sure will kill him if winning and running are no longer options. And I know that not everyone will see these things as opposites or all that detached from each other, but, to me, intelligent and methodical fighting does not naturally go hand in hand with, essentially, grappling your opponent and jumping off a cliff with them.
The Favorite Child: Yuuta
Like Gojo, Yuuta has access to an overwhelming amount of power. There's no doubt that when it comes to raw energy, he is the strongest sorcerer in his generation. He's exceptionally skilled when it comes to fighting and is often able to get by on simply overpowering his opponents (truly, much like Gojo). He doesn't embody being strong, though - he knows that he is, but it's not something that he considers a defining trait for himself. Instead, Yuuta's whole thing is that he has a tendency to shoulder burdens that other people won't (much like Yuuji, actually) (also it's kind of funny because of all the characters in JJK, I would consider Yuuta to be a "cog" way more than Yuuji, but that's a whole other thing). Yuuta is willing to be a monster, to make hard calls and suffer the consequences, because he has internalized what everyone keeps telling him - that, after Gojo, Yuuta is now "the strongest."
Which means that Yuuta also needs an equally large weakness to balance out that power. But where Gojo had arrogance (and his boyfriend), Yuuta has innocence. There's this pure sort of worldview that Yuuta carries with him that completely counterbalances the part of him that is willing to get his hands bloody. He has this youthful sort of hopefulness and naiveté that if he does the dirty work and puts in effort, then things will work out in his favor because they must. If he is sincere, if he shoulders an unbearable mantle, then everything will be fine simply because he chooses to do so. He does things because they are right and just, and he wants to believe that the universe will acknowledge that and be fair - even though he wouldn't have to do these unnamable things if that was true.
The Less Obvious one: Nobara
Nobara doesn't have a lot of screen time compared to the others, and specifically not a lot of time spent planning for/fighting in the "big fights," but she has one thing that the other characters don't have: self awareness. Nobara is the only character who knows what her contradictions are - she even says them out loud.
She wants nothing more than to be a normal girl who is into fashion, who could be a model, who does her hair and her nails and her makeup, who goes on dates, who has a lot of money and spends it freely. That's her ideal, that's her goal. But that's also who she is right now. She dyes her hair, wears makeup, is feminine in all the ways that would mark her as a girl to strangers on the street, goes shopping and buys too much and makes Yuuji carry her bags. She likes being girly and doesn't shy away from it.
But she is also, and I mean this with all the love in my heart, a feral little gremlin who is willing to bash people's skulls in with a hammer. She's brash and rude and loud. She takes up space and is unapologetic about it. She's vicious on the battlefield. She's not afraid to get bloody, and she hates being viewed as a damsel in distress. She's strategic in her fights, and she uses the fact that opponents underestimate her to her advantage. And she knows all of this, too, and she likes it.
She's self-actualized <3 No notes from me; I love my girl.
Anyway, that's it KSJDBVJKLDFVBJKDFVB There's no real point to this. I'm not saying anything profound, I don't think. This was all just a thought that I had, a little thing that I noticed, and I was bullied (affectionate) into sharing.
#i wipe my hands of this i don't want to look at it anymore#i have so many thoughts at all times. not all of them are ground breaking. i just like characters and i think gege does good work#i don't even remember what i was originally thinking about that prompted this. probably yuuji if i'm being honest#something about his resignation to be a cog and yet his ferociousness when he fights really just. clicks something in my head#like so sorry my guy you can't just say you're a tool with a single function and then fight like a cornered animal who is desperate to live#without me wanting to pull out a magnifying glass#also gojo is. well. he's gojo. annoyingly one of the most complex characters i have ever seen JSBCVJKDVB#yuuta is always fun to look at because he was Not There and then Very Suddenly There#also if anyone fucking comes for me about my megu thoughts i'm going to start throwing knives <3#i'm tired of seeing megumi discourse that's like 'he is one or the other' like no babes he's Both actually. accept it into your hearts#fandom spaces let characters be complex challenge#anyway. hiiiii KJDSBVJKBDVJKDBFV#jjk

So hard being a sukuna enjoyer and trying to find fics about him because you get one of two options
1. God awful out of character reader insert porn where you’re his uwu submissive (normally terrified of him) concubine or some shit but GASSSSPPPP he ACTUALLY cares about you and is soft for YOU ONLY and he wants you to GET PREGNANT with HIS HEIR oh my GOD
Or
2. God awful out of character suku.fushi or suku.ita where the plot is like what if sukuna was a MAFIA BOSS and he got OBSESSED WITH THEM and KIDNAPPED them and also it was INCEST and OMEGAVERSE and they call him DADDY while he FUCKS THEM INTO THE MATTRESS and talks about their PUSSY the WHOLE time
And both make me want to throw up in my mouth and momentarily wish I had the power to arbitrarily ban ppl from posting on the internet
#his tag on ao3 is truly a desolate fucking wasteland of the most radioactive garbage I have ever laid eyes on#like ???????#okay given his character I GUESS I understand why ppl are so obsessed with writing more ‘’’’taboo’’’’ stuff with him#but like. number one you could do it in a lot more interesting or tasteful way lol#and number two#half the time???? you aren’t even using canon verse or exploring his actual character??????#they’re just using him for some annoyingly horrendous poorly written sa fantasy in the shittiest AU imaginable#like what is the point#I GET IT you just wanna fuck an older man with a whack power dynamic#stop making it MY PROBLEM#stop putting it IN FRONT OF MY EYEBALLS#no matter how I try to filter I can’t fucking escape this shit 😭😭😭😭#like sorry idk I think he’s interesting because of his actual personality and abilities and history and relationship to canon#not because you can use him as a stand in for every poorly written edgy male booktok love interest#uuuggggghhhhhhhh#can I please just find some good canon verse fics#maybe with some sukume to explore that relationship#or theories about his past#or his relationship to megumi or yuuji that is NOT from the lens of him wanting to break their cervix idk#kaz rambles

happy wednesday!!! one scoop of mafia boys please
WIP Wednesday (5/8) | Mafia Front Restaurant AU (Part 155)
Since Jean and Kevin returned, there’s been music coming from the kitchen that Neil vaguely recognizes. He hums along to a song he knows Jean has sung before and places a few cards down. He and Andrew have been neck and neck the whole game, but Neil’s about to win. He’s so close he can taste it.
“Remind me who’s winning,” Andrew says, flicking his fingers at the napkin Neil’s been scribbling points on. He’s got a handful of cards left and looks pissed about it.
“Me. I’ve got 475, you’re at 470.”
“Mm,” Andrew hums and clicks his tongue. “And you said the first to 500 wins.”
“Yep.”
Andrew nods, then smirks before snatching up the entire discard pile— to Neil’s confusion, doubling his hand. The goalie organizes his new cards in a flash and makes four different runs on his side of the table before dropping his very last card down beside the deck, effectively ending the game. Neil’s mouth drops open into a gape that probably makes him look like an imbecile, but he can’t help it.
“What the fuck? How did—” Neil looks over Andrew’s plays to find that they’re all legal. He’s been beaten. Neil slaps his remaining cards against the table, but Andrew merely props his chin on his hand.
“Oh how the table turns.” Andrew says. “In a circle I mean. Since I was winning at the start.”
Neil bites the inside of his cheek. Damn it, this is worse than losing to Jean.
“Would you like to play Go Fish instead?” Andrew says, the taunt making Neil’s nostrils flare. “I also know Old Maid, if that would be easier for you.”
“Fuck you.” Neil grits out, counting their points and discovering that Andrew hadn’t just beat him. He annihilated him with that last hand, winning with 540 points to Neil’s paltry 490.
“I know a few other games that aren’t for children, but they might be too advanced for you.”
“Shut up.” Neil says. Then, “What other games?”
Andrew shrugs. “Spit, Poker, Egyptian Rat Screw—”
“Wait,” Neil holds up a hand. “What was that last one?”
“Egyptian Rat Screw,” Andrew repeats. “I learned it in juvie.”
Neil blinks. “In juvie? What did you do?”
“None of your business.” Andrew smiles sweetly. “Oh, do you know how to play war? It’s the simplest card game I know. Maybe you could win at that if I hold your hand—”
“I know war,” Neil spits. “Just deal the damn cards. For rummy. I’m winning the next one.”
Andrew gives the tiniest of smiles. “If you say so.”
#SCOOP! <3#i love andrew being a bitch! : ) it's so fun. also poor neil. Jean cheats. Andrew cheats. how's the boy supposed to win?#well besides playing against Kevin. Kevin doesn't cheat at cards. he's just annoyingly good at it.#aftg#andreil#kevjean#Mafia Restaurant AU#WIP Wednesday#🕊️#answered#anon

You make a movie and get called by one half of the class war a shill for Big Feminism and the other half, a bootlicker of capitalism, and yet ESPN got an Oscar for making a long form commercial for their network...
#and the worst part it unquestioningly IS the best documentary on OJ#and it's a great doc no question#but like the aging white commentators freely using the n word is a bucket of cold water on it for me#my god people were so fucking patronizing to OJ esp. in the sportscasting world I'm surprised he didn't kill sooner#annoyingly it is also a very good documentary about Los Angeles in the last 70 years#and like now realizing that the actual LAPD chief who is a thinly veiled character in A Friend in Deed (1974) Columbo ep was the same one a#Chief that ordered the 39th and Dalton raid; who beat Rodney King and got away with it and then ordered them to sit on their hands#at the start of the 93 riots...#it's like finding out that Kissinger did all THAT too#Oh well but at least we got LA Confidential about it right?

hii! honeslty just curious, I read/watched kuroshitsuji AGES ago and I don't think I've finished the manga anyway, does grell go by she/her?? I vageuly remember ppl headcanonning them as enby though iirc in canon he's a guy?
Your tags peaked my curiosity, I haven't seen any Kuro content in a hot minute, but I remember it being the absolute must watch in my peak anime watching years lol And I absolutely loved the manga's artstyle
in canon grell is a trans woman, yana toboso has said something like "grell is a man with a woman's heart" ages ago and sometimes around 2014/16 had tweeted something about wanting to be more careful with her representation of people like grell in the future, don't quote me on that thought because i only read that tweet once and only remember reading a shitty screenshot of a translation of that interview where she allegedly said that.
i can however show you this:
it's from a bonus chapter (after chapter 108) about the popularity polls (it's a very convoluted non canon chapter) but it's one of the most blatant example of her being trans.
there's also the way she constantly refers to herself as a "young maiden" ect. idk how it goes exactly in the og but in french they translated it so grell always refers to herself with feminine terms while everyone else misgender her including the narrator. she very consistently reaffirm herself as a woman through every single ones of her appearances, like it's a thing she very much does, every single time she's on screen.
i haven't watched the anime in forever (cause it's kind of a disgrace and insult to the manga lol) but if i remember properly (which i mostly likely don't) they did omit/lowkey censor some of grell explicitly going "i wish i had been born a woman/could have been able to carry children" when she first properly introduce herself as a shinigami & the other half of jack the killer. (the anime also really did lean a lot more into the pervert queer caricature whereas in the manga she's given a bit more dignity, especially the further the story goes. though that might be my own impression and maybe it didn't change that much i just love her a whole lot).
also because i have to, please forget the anime (the first two seasons that is) and read the manga first and foremost because oh boy, what a disaster the anime is (nostlagia and atmosphere wise it's entertaining, i really love the op & ed, but it just, i just cant man it doesn't even compare to the manga at all). only watch book of circus -> book of murder -> campania movie -> the new private school arc that's coming soon (idk what they called it) after reading the manga.
#undescribed#she's my problematic girlie and i love her so much. there's subtext too for her transness but that goes in spoilers territory. otherwise sh#'s been VERY blatantly trans since her introduction it baffles me ppl refuse to accept it (not noticing it is fine cause when i was a kid i#didnt really get it because i didnt know trans ppl where a thing but one day it all clicked into place yknow)#unrelated but it kills me that sebastian is only a transphobe because it's 'historically accurate/what a good butler of his position#should be' he only says that because 1 he's a bitch 2 he doesn't like grell 3 he gets a kick out of playing the good butler role#i hate/love his stupid fucking ass i need to punch him so bad. he's so annoyingly funny i can't stand him. he's just awful and having a#grand time what an ass. back to queer ppl there are other in the story like nina hopkins being a lesbian (HEAVELY implied) and doll's whole#thing. it's one of my favorite manga ppl should give it a try just dont look at the anime pretend it's not there pls

im unenthusiastic about both pecco and jorge as world champions but as a bonafide hater i want jorge to take it this year just because people are starting to push the "time to consider pecco one of the all time greats esp if he wins his 3rd" convo like rah im not having that sorry. so he joined the 8+ wins club this season but listen. Valentino Rossi, Marc Marquez, Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and... pecco b?? sorry to this mans fans but he Does Not belong there
sorry i can’t believe i get to say this about an italian guy with this actual name but NO BLESS YOUS FOR GIACOMO AGOSTINI ?
#now to your actual point yeah i agree it’s not pecco’s vibe#but he IS good. annoyingly#i also don’t know if it will necessarily get him considered an all time great… like dani pedrosa is and he didn’t win a premier class title#he just has SO good (and unlucky) and rode during on of the most competitive times for motogp#while pecco is uh. is not. and he KNOWS that. and i think it kinda bothers him#motogp#callie speaks#asks

everytime i feel bad and stressed about my life i remember that i might be in a troubling situation and having a bad time but im not season 4 fiona gallagher in the clink after leaving crack on the counter which my 3 year old baby brother happened to ingest resulting in a fatal near-death experience thats wracked me with never-ending guilt and forever altered my life
#this storyline was stupid you expect me to believe two-apples-tall liam gallagher came close to the crack AND managed to ingest it?#the crack which is lined up on the kitchen counter?#Also i don't believe that fiona would be irresponsible enough for liam to have been able to be close to the crack#that was an ooc moment and not like “its ooc cause thats the point shes going thru a tough time”#morelike “so ooc that it seems like a discrepancy that was overlooked for the sake of drama and shock value#as an older sister i feel like being watchful of your younger sibling if crack is in their general vicinity is an unstoppable instinct#its just not a plausible situation sorry like this is coming from someone who wholeheartedly embraces the realistic idea#of fiona falling short sometimes and being very human by struggling to consistently maintain her doting attentiveness#but anyways it's complicated cause Fiona clearly put it somewhere he cant reach#so how did he get access to it????#its like getting mad at a parent for putting a glass of wine on the counter#not comparing that to literal cocaine obviously this whole situation was nonetheless messed up#but just for some perspective... the writers were clearly doing cocaine themselves if they thought that#liam was bungee-jumping onto the counter and showing off his skills as an apparent budding olympics gymnast#not justifying anything but. listen.#the fact that it was on the counter FOR A REASONNN shows that fiona was careful to keep it out of reach and NOT do something insane like#putting it on the table#liam somehow magically having access to it defeats the purpose of it being on the counter.#if they really wanted for it to be believable that liam managed to snort it they should've put it on the table#but we already know that situation wouldn't be believable in its entirety cause we know that fiona would literally never leave it there#WHICH IS MY POINT. LIKE THIS SITUATION IS JUST ANNOYINGLY UNBELIEVABLE. FIONA WOULD NOT DO THIS AND HOW DID LIAM EVEN GET TO IT??#theres like 39482939 overlooked discrepancies just for the sake of getting to the shock#just to circle back Fiona would literally never let liam go near crack no matter how far gone and fucked up she was#I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I AM AN OLDER SISTER.#its just so UGHHHHH anyways obviously i still think in canon yeah Fiona was at fault shouldve been more careful and watchful#no matter how you look at it its clear that a risk like this just cannot be taken and she had to be blamed to an extent#but me personally? i reject it because it didnt feel natural to me at all there were 394939 other ways to frame a Fiona downfall#And i loved all the other ways her spiral was shown like getting messed up and ending up in Sheboygan#all the shit she got into with robbie + the impulsive urge to ruin the good thing she had going with mike#so human and believable and deeply flawed unlike the liam situation which was horrifically OOC and unrealistic

#just makes me a little#she goes from essentially begging him to stay alive for the people who care about him (for her)#to having him prove in maybe the most unambiguous possible way that when it comes down to it she means more to him than his revenge#to him looking right at her and saying pretty much the exact opposite#the whiplash but also idk the words vs actions...#more than words he couldn't express his feelings with words so he did it another way#his actions have always shown his truth but she needs his words she needs to hear it from him she needs to know he understands it too#brings me back to s6 (what doesn't tbh) - all their missed opportunities all the times they were interrupted or couldn't find the words#how much weight is given to those words even though at this point it's clear to everyone around them and the audience and even to THEM#(even if they only just realize the full reality of it) how they feel about each other something about the showing and the telling of it#you can't imagine how good that feels to say out loud i needed to get to this and you deserve to hear it did you mean what you said#yes i meant what i said every word of it SAY IT AGAIN#and then little yellow house when it's again clearly such a big deal - to lisbon especially but to them both - for her to SAY it#idk i just love it i love a show that gives me endless opportunities to annoyingly and gleefully overanalyze#tm

the murder mystery i'm reading has a character whom i can instantly clock as autistic. yay! i have no reason to think he'll be the murderer but i'll be very angry if he is
#melonposting#can i please have one sweet weirdo not turn out to be secretly evil? thanks#the character's name is bobby :) i love him very much#like he'd be in a room with people talking about the drama and he'd be so quiet the others forget he's there#then he'd suddenly point something out or make some other vaguely helpful statement and then everyone gets startled and stares at him#but he's shy so then he gets embarrassed that he caught everyone's attention#but everyone's like 'bobby's right!' because he is actually quite observant and smart#like he'll notice some random detail. or he'll be doing some magic trick in the corner trying to use it as an analogy for a murder method#one of his tricks involved sprinkling ash on a lump of sugar so it can be lit on fire -- the sugar can't be lit on fire otherwise#and the analogy there is that there might've been two poisons that when together make some effect (the body quickly rotting)#that otherwise would be impossible#the funny thing is that he clearly knows what the analogy is but he isn't very good at expressing it#he'll stumble over a few words and then someone else will be like ohh that's how the trick is relevant#cuz it's like the potential murder method#in most scenes he's either doing some weird trick or making tiny turtles out of raisins and nuts. completely in silence#clearly he's the type of autist who has 0 real social skills but is sweet & charming enough that people like him. but nobody really gets hi#he is admittedly a weirdo. what an odd man#annoyingly i misplaced the book this morning so i can't read more yet </3 augh
