personally i think he WANTED helaena to be a substitute for rhaenyra, but shes not rhaenyra 2. helaena is her own person. and (from viserys pov) shes too soft and sweet, she doesnt have that same fire, the “blood of the dragon”, that draws him to rhaenyra.

helaenas problem (again, to viserys) is that she just genuinely likes him too much. im basing this on the fact that shes the only one that smiled when he entered the throne room in ep 8. her love never felt like something viserys had to fight for or guard and protect, unlike rhaenyras, … so he just didnt.

i think they probably had a good surface level relationship. it just never went any deeper than that. if you asked either one if they loved the other theyd be like “of course! theyre my father/daughter!” but if you asked them if they LIKED the other, viserys at least would be like “well….”
