Things I can't stop thinking about from Steven and Vicki's Tales of the TARDIS episode

- This reunion. Seeing them together again kills me anyway, but when you look at the context of the last time they saw each other, both of them could have easily thought the other might be dead. The last Vicki saw of Steven he was bleeding out and slipping away from consciousness, and to Steven he woke up to learn that they'd left Vicki in a city that was being razed to the ground and its inhabitants slaughtered. There wasn’t a proper goodbye and neither could have known for sure whether the other had survived. These are two people who must have spent decades of their lives just hoping and praying that the other was okay.

They take each other's presence in like it’s a miracle. I don’t know if they intentionally wrote/acted this with that particular context of their last time together in mind, but nevertheless it can very easily be read that way since their reactions lend themselves to it so well.

- ^ In particular, Steven’s voice breaks in a way that absolutely destroys me.

- Is this girlish giggling not the most Vicki thing you’ve ever seen?

- There are certain moments that just really hit as, ‘This is them.’ I mean, look at her. That’s Vicki. It keeps blowing my mind.

- Steven is SO happy to see her again, oh my word. “I’ve got my little sister back!” is gonna live in my mind for the rest of my life. To have that dynamic acknowledged in those words and to see how much they love each other kills me. Look at this unreserved fluff. This means the world to me.

- Hearing that they’ve had wonderfully happy lives is so nice. Vicki could have been dealing with all kinds of turmoil given the time she chose to stay in, and with Steven’s luck he could have had literally anything happen to him, like Big Finish decided to do. I’m so glad they’ve been given full and happy lives onscreen, that Vicki has done so well in such a wildly different time and that Steven’s bad luck curse is finally broken. (The trauma curse is broken at least — it’s too much of a stretch for me to believe that he wouldn’t still have mundane bad luck lol.)

- Someone needs to either sue Peter for these faces or give him an award. There is so much emotion going on here and I can barely handle it. And knowing how much Peter truly loved this show and his time on it, I get the feeling some of this is real for him.

- “Vicki, this might not be his TARDIS. I mean, can you imagine the Doctor wearing something like this?” Well I’m sure as heck imagining it now! Someone PLEASE make fan art of One in Six’s coat.

- Their reverence for the Doctor’s pocket watch. Vicki is so happy and clutches it with joy and Steven stares at it and strokes it for a good minute. 💗

- Love having some skeptical Steven wondering if it could be a trap and warning Vicki to be careful. His older brother mode got reactivated so fast. And, “Don’t be such a spoilsport!” is so delightfully Vicki.

- Space helmet for a cow!!!

- “Well, it had been a busy week.” Lol, more like a busy (or not so busy) 2 years on Mechanus! You’re more than excused!

- I know it was naturally gonna happen because they’re going over The Time Meddler but I love the references to the Monk, and I love that we also get a subtle reference to The Daleks’ Master Plan out of it.

- Another one of those moments that just strikes you. Look at him.

- “He rescued me. I was an orphan and he became my family. I became the granddaughter he’d lost.” 😭

- Vicki’s little, “Come out, come out, wherever you are!” dance is so perfectly Vicki. It warms my heart how well-characterized they both are here.

- Anyone else see this and immediately start crying thinking about her putting her hands over her eyes in The Chase? Just me?

- Steven’s face when he agrees with her about wishing more than anything to see the Doctor again. I love his relationship with the Doctor so much, it kills me to see him emotional about it, to see how much he still loves him after all this time. But on top of it, once again I feel like there’s some genuine Peter in here who misses Bill. You can see in a lot of interviews, panels, commentaries and so on that Peter really truly cared about Bill as his friend and is still protective over him as a person and his character. When Steven makes this face in agreement about wishing he could just see the Doctor again, I feel something else very real in it.

- Look at them. Just look at them. No further comment.

- Vicki’s face hearing the Doctor’s laugh is my face.

I still haven’t been able to get through this without crying at his laugh. I don’t really have the words for how magical and touching it is that they included him in that way. It tugs on my heartstrings so hard.

omg the best scenario for me in regards to your poll of how the marios would act when it comes to their respective luigis, is a mario trying to hoard ALL of the other luigis for himself, that's his baby brother no matter what universe and i can just see the other marios trying to do the same. they fight from there so kinda like the first option of your poll of the marios fighting lol. i dont really want to see them fight but i think it's just too funny.

Although...(if I may add my own critique), as much as Mario (no matter which one) loves his brother - he only loves the brother that is his own.

It's like what I said in my Bowser ask, the versions of the Bros are just that - different versions of themselves that have their own personalities and character based on experiences from their own worlds.

Do you think that Game Mario would feel an instant connection with Movie Luigi (despite them being similar)? Not really...

Despite how similar the two are, Movie Mario can't even begin to describe the pain and anxiety he felt of being separated from his Luigi in the warp zone, and the joy he felt of being reunited with him...

Likewise, Game Mario was separated from his Luigi when they were just infants. While he was too young to remember all the details, he can still recall the feeling of a pull from within him that helped lead him to his brother. It's not something the other Mario's have been through with their Luigi's...

And 1993 Mario - who I might add is at least two decades older than the other Mario's - would find the other Luigi's endearing I bet, but they're not his Luigi. The Luigi he raised himself. The brother who's into conspiracy theories, spends too much time playing video games, and who helped him save another dimension from an evil dictator. That's who his Luigi is 💗.

And it's not just physical and personal experiences that each Bro pair share - it's also their bone deep brotherly love. Sure they would no doubt feel love and affection towards any other version of their brother (like Paper Mario did with Luigi in Paper Jam!), but the brotherly love between each pair is unique, powerful, and pure. It can never be duplicated or replaced ❤️💚.

How does their aging work anyway - everyone looks young. Where are the people who are 70 or 80 days old? Or do they not visibly age after a certain point? But they don’t seem surprised by Jack’s appearance, so that doesn’t make sense.

Also, is there just like a *massive* graveyard somewhere if people are dying off so quickly?

I really need to stop trying to figure out the internal logic of a planet that, based on how the show has gone so far, we’re never going to see again.

How does Jack know that there isn’t like a forcefield or laser grid to keep the Chosen from leaving? I guess they probably scanned the area for things like that.

I personally chose Law for this because major age gaps make me uncomfortable when the person isn’t fully mature yet. Law is the only one who is 25+ years old, which is the age at which the brain fully develops. Otherwise it would feel too predatory for me to be able to write it. Given just how faithful he is to the Hippocratic oath, Law dedicated a good deal of his free time to making advancements in the world of medicine

As a doctor and surgeon, he’s never satisfied with simply taking the facts as they are and using his Devil Fruit to his advantage; no, he very much prefers to sit in his office and toll over research and papers

He’s also allied himself with different pirates over the years, seeking his own benefit and what he ends up getting from their end

Unsurprisingly, he meets all sorts of people, but his bonds with them have always been superficial, if not cold, even

Law’s never been one to think too deeply about whether or not he likes his “business partners” because he simply wasn’t there to fraternize with people

However, once he met her, everything he’d known about his world changed 180 degrees

She was quite a fair bit older than he was, almost two decades his senior, and it showed clearly just how vastly different their ages were in the way that she carried herself

Perhaps it wasn’t the typical maturity most people expected women to have, the stereotypical stuffy seriousness and stuck-up attitude that most noblewomen had, but something about her and the way her eyes trained on everyone showed just how much she’d gone through and seen

As allies, they were forced to interact from time to time, and to Law’s surprise, he didn’t find himself opposed to being in her presence; hell, he sometimes preferred having her around over his solitude with papers and tools in his office

Having her around while he worked had him eager to prove himself, for some odd reason, and eager to prove just what he was capable of doing with his skill set and his knowledge at hand

Maybe it was because she seemed to not think much of him

Not in the sense that she disliked him, or that she looked down on him, but she somehow always treated him as though he were nothing but a mere boy to her, a kid whose efforts were endearing but not necessarily awe-inspiring in their nature

And though he’d tried to deny it for a long while, Law hated the fact that he hadn’t been able to impress her—and that probably was because of the fact that he was so used to people reacting to him and his abilities with a mix of horror and amazement

Her lackluster reactions weren’t at all disrespectful; in fact, she did often express her appreciation for his work as a doctor, warlord, surgeon, pirate, and all-around menace, but she did so in a manner that felt like she was simply praising a child for their newest achievement

She’d even gone so far as to pat his head with a chuckle in an attempt to calm him down after he’d once lost his temper over an inconvenience in the operating room, which he knew she’d done with no malicious intent but had come across as condescending

And Law did understand where she was coming from, seeing as most people in their forties found little to be impressive, after having seen so much—and especially with her being a pirate who’s traveled at least a good majority of the entire world

Her own personality played part in this too, since she seemed to have a laidback sort of effortless swagger that made all men and women alike look up to her

The casualness with which she strutted and her confident smirk was exactly why she fit right in with them, and why they respected her so much

In fact, he himself found himself momentarily stunned every now and then by her mere presence and how overwhelming it sometimes got, and he had to begrudgingly admit that he couldn’t stay away from her due to his immense attraction to everything that she was

But still, the sting left behind every time she cooed at one of his morbid experiments was one that Law couldn’t soothe with his own faith in himself

He had to prove to her just how worthy he was of his title as the Surgeon of Death, and he planned to do it himself before he lost his mind to the fact that she simply didn’t see him as the man that he was

So he tried time and time again to subtly let her sit with him in his office or operating room, often by claiming that he needed an extra helping hand, or that he needed someone to keep watch to make sure that no one would interrupt his work

He hoped that by doing so she would be genuinely interested in his skills, and so impress her

However, Law’s plan seemed to completely backfire when he had her in his office, asking her to organize a stack of incredibly complicated research papers he’d left out on purpose for her to read

As he’d expected, she’d been curious enough to pick them up and ask him to explain what was on them, and he’d smirked a little as he gave her a rundown of the topic at hand while she sat in front of him

She’d gaped at him with awe in her eyes, and he’d believed that he’d finally managed to impress her, that is until—

“For someone so young, it’s incredible how you’ve managed to discover all this.”

And that was when he’d had about enough, and he couldn’t help but snap at her

“I’m not a fucking child. Don’t talk to me like that.”

Once again, his sharp tongue had gotten the best of him, as he could see how she frowned at him while setting his papers down

“Sorry, Law. Didn’t mean to disrespect you as a warlord.”

With an exhausted huff, he rubbed his eyes before finally saying, “That’s not it. It’s not about that.”

Confusion laced her features, and Law took advantage of drawing to his full height and leaning over her, an intense surge of emotions in his hard-set eyes

“I’m not a kid. You’re treating me like one, but you’re forgetting I’m a man. A powerful one at that.”

“I haven’t—“

“Really?” He narrowed his eyes for a moment, before he hummed and leaned in until he could see every single lash and watch every single stunned emotion flicker in her eyes. Part of him reveled in that wicked feeling. “It seems to me like you’ve only ever seen me as someone your junior.”

Despite her warring emotions, she managed to sigh and say, “Law, it’s… it’s only because you’re younger, and I recognize that you’ve got the youth I left behind years ago.”

With a glint of his teeth that seemed just a little cruel and a little cocky, he allowed his thumb to gently press onto her bottom lip, watching as the red flush climbed up her cheeks at his daring move, certainly having not seen this coming in any which way

“I could very well remind you what it feels like to be young.” His low voice was as tantalizing as a velvety purr, stroking her soft lip. “It’s your choice tonight. Just don’t forget what I’m capable of.”

Though one could read it as a threat, she knew damn well that it was a promise—a very, very tantalizing and delicious promise that had her head spinning

Law’s smirk was all-telling, and he knew that from this day forth she would be unable to remove this new image of him from her mind

Was he too despicable for liking the fact that she would suffer from not being able to stop thinking of him? No matter; he’s never been the most morally righteous, after all

CMBYN is an amazing movie and i HATE that Twitter puritans is ruining it by calling it pedophilic and bullying anyone who dare say they like it to the point that they have to hide. 18 is the age of consent in just a few american states, yet they claim that age as the ONLY moral correct age worldwide, shaming people from countries with lower age of consent (like scandinavian countries or southern european countries) and saying their laws are disgusting. They deliberately misuse the world pedophile to fuel their agenda, even though doing so actually harms real victims of pedophilia because the term is watered down and taken less seriously than it should.

I hear what you’re saying. My own child rejected my invitation to walk down to our local indie movie house to see CMBYN when it was first released because she thought the age gap was “creepy”. I’m afraid we’ve so conditioned our children to be on high alert for pedophiles that the pendulum has swung to the other extreme and even dating someone a little older but still within the same generation seems wrong to them. Back in my day, when the ground was hot and dinosaurs roamed the Earth, that would have been perfectly acceptable. My high school bestie dated a 21 year-old college senior studying to be a helicopter pilot when we were 17. Her parents were totally cool with it.

And yes, I’m old, get over it.

Like Elio, she and the rest of my inner circle were 17 chronologically, but emotionally and intellectually mature, sensible, and responsible. We were not average teenagers. Neither was Elio.

Homophobia is at the root of this backlash to CMBYN, when all is said and done. No one batted an eyelash over Johnny and Baby in the much-beloved Dirty Dancing, even though he was much closer in age to her sister, Lisa. x

It’s my sincerest wish that the children of millennials and Generation Z will never have to tolerate hatred borne of puritanical nonsense invented by people with control issues disguised as morality, in the name of “salvation”, and more often than not, in the form of religion.

I think that’s our only hope of eradicating the bigotry and willful ignorance of the conservative mindset that has terrorized innocent people for the last several decades, in the United States and elsewhere. As more and more young people release themselves from the conservative religious fundamentalism of their parents, they’re discovering that being a good, responsible, moral person has nothing to do with conservatism and religion.

I hope that someday soon, we can find our way towards a more rational way of thinking about morality, with respect for the individual rights and dignity of all people, and with kindness and love.
