HAPPY 42ND BIRTHDAY TO HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES, WILLIAM ARTHUR PHILIP LOUIS ♡
On 21 June 1982, Prince William was born to Diana and Charles, then known as Prince and Princess of Wales in St Mary's Hospital, London, at at 21:03 BST. He was born during the reign of his paternal grandmother Elizabeth II and was the first child born to a Prince and Princess of Wales since Prince John's birth in July 1905.
The little prince's name was announced on 28 June as William Arthur Philip Louis. Wills was christened in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, on 4 August.
William studied at Jane Mynors' nursery school and Wetherby School in London before joining Ludgrove. He was subsequently admitted to Eton College, studying geography, biology, and history at the A-level.
The Prince undertook a gap year taking part in British Army training exercises in Belize, working on English dairy farms, and as part of the Raleigh International programme in southern Chile, William worked for ten weeks on local construction projects and taught English.
In 2001, William enrolled at the University of St Andrews, initially to study Art History but then changed his field of study to Geography with the support of the love of his life Catherine Elizabeth Middleton who he met while at school.
Will and Cat fell in love during their time at uni, and married at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011. The couple have three adorable cupcakes Prince George (b.2013), Princess Charlotte (b.2015) and Prince Louis (b.2018). The family of five divide time between their official residence, Kensington Palace and their two private residences - Amner Hall & Adelaide Cottage.
After university, William trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. In 2008, he graduated from the Royal Air Force College Cranwell and joined the RAF Search and Rescue Force in early 2009. He transferred to RAF Valley, Anglesey, to receive training on the Sea King search and rescue helicopter, which made him the first member of the British royal family since Henry VII to live in Wales.
During his active career as a Search and Rescue Pilot, William conducted 156 search and rescue operations, which resulted in 149 people being rescued. He then served as a full-time pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance starting in July 2015, donating his full salary to the EAAA charity.
Working with all branches of the military, he holds the ranks of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, Commander in the Navy and Wing Commander in the Air-Force
Upon their wedding, WillCat became HRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Earl and Countess of Strathearn and Baron and Lady Carrickfergus. He became the heir apparent on 8 September 2022, receiving the titles of the Duke of Cornwall & The Duke of Rothesay. William & Catherine were made The Prince and Princess of Wales by Kimg Charles on 9 September 2022. Serving his country, his community, and his fellow veterans
By Jonathan Monfiletto
His great-grandfather escaped from slavery in Virginia and worked for the Union Army during the Civil War. His grandfather made a family home on Cherry Street in Penn Yan and owned a blacksmith shop on Maiden Lane in the village. His father served during World War I as apparently the only Black soldier from Yates County in the conflict. And Stanley Clark followed in their footsteps and made his own history in a career of service to the military and the community.
Stanley Clark was born January 21, 1935 in Penn Yan to Franklin and Lena Clark, who at the time lived on North Avenue in Penn Yan. Franklin, in turn, had been born in August 1894 in Ingleside, near Prattsburgh in Steuben County, to William and Sarah Clark and – at least by the time of his entrance into the military – raised in their Cherry Street home. Franklin served as a farrier sergeant – he took care of the horses, forging and fitting their shoes, among other tasks – with Battery D of the 349th Field Artillery, 92nd Division. Department from Camp Dix, New Jersey, Franklin served from his drafting in November 1917 until his discharge at Camp Upton, New York in March 1919.
Stanley Clark died at age 85 on December 21, 2020 – exactly one month before his 86th birthday – having served his country and his comrades in the U.S. Army for a full 20 years, as director of the Yates County Veterans’ Service Agency, and with the American Legion at the post, county, district, state, and national levels. Though he is recent in history, as I like to say of those who existed during living memory – I’m sure there is someone reading this article who knew Stanley – I wanted to write about him because I have written about the three generations in his family who came before him.
These generations include Nathaniel Clark – Stanley’s great-grandfather – and Franklin, whose military service I wrote about in honor of Black History Month on February 9, 2022, just the second article on the Oliver’s Travels blog. At the time, I hadn’t firmly connected the two men as relatives, but on November 23, 2022, I wrote about the two men and connected them through William, Nathaniel’s oldest child and Franklin’s father. Since that time, I have been researching Stanley – the fourth generation of the family to live in Penn Yan – and wanting to write about him to close the loop, so to speak.
A quick word about Nathaniel before I continue on with Stanley’s story: Born into slavery in October 1842 on a plantation near Port Royal, Virginia, he worked as a porter at a hotel in Bowling Green when troops under command of Union General Ambrose Burnside took him and other enslaved people and assigned them to different duties. Nathaniel worked for Col. William Clark (it is unclear if this is a coincidence or if Nathaniel eventually adopted Clark’s surname) as a cook and caretaker with the 9th Army Corps, 3rd Division, 2nd Brigade.
Three years later, during a battle at Suffolk, Virginia, Clark was taken prisoner by the Confederate Army and made a cook on a Confederate vessel. After six weeks on the ship, Clark and Uncle Joe, a fellow enslaved man, deserted the army, signaled a Union picket boat, and then helped sink the Confederate ship and free the Union prisoners.
Stanley followed his father and great-grandfather into military service while still a student at Geneva High School, enlisting in the U.S. Army at age 17 in 1952 and receiving his high school diploma while on active duty. He retired with the rank of sergeant first class 20 years later in 1972. In between, he served with the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War from 1952 to 1953. He later served two deployments during the Vietnam War, first from 1965 to 1967 with the 1st Infantry Division and then from 1969 to 1971 with the 197th Transportation Battalion. During his second tour, Stanley was the captain of a tugboat on the Mekong River. For his career of service, he received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Korean and Vietnam Service Medals.
Two years after retiring from the Army, Stanley embarked on another 20-year career of serving his fellow veterans. In 1974, the Yates County Legislature appointed him as the county’s director of veterans affairs. At the time, Stanley was 39 years old and living on Main Street in Dundee. Upon his retirement in 1994, Stanley was the honoree of a testimonial dinner held at Johnson Costello American Legion Post 355 in Penn Yan. The 50 guests in attendance included the sitting State Assemblyman and a representative of the sitting State Senator, both of whom presented Stanley with citations; Yates County legislators, officials, and co-workers; members of the American Legion, VFW, and 40/8 as well as their ladies auxiliaries; and Stanley’s son James.
The following year, Stanley was named Humanitarian of the Year 1994-95 by the Seventh District of the American Legion. The Johnson Costello post had nominated him for that honor as well as for Legionnaire of the Year; the Yates County American Legion had awarded both of these honors to him and forwarded his nominations to the district level. He had joined the Johnson Costello post in 1972, after his own military career, and worked his way up to Post Commander for the year 1977-78. He served as Yates County Commander in 1985, District Commander Aide in 1986, and New York Department Sergeant-At-Arms in 1987.
“Stories of his assistance to veterans, their spouses, and family are endless and cover any hour of the day. He is just a very nice person, and I like him,” said Joan Byrnside, of the Dundee American Legion Auxiliary. These stories – largely during his tenure as veterans services director – range from transporting veterans to the hospital in his own vehicle after hours to assisting and comforting a dying veteran’s wife to serving as fiduciary for 15 veterans who were unable to handle their own affairs.
A decade later, for the term running from July 2005 to July 2006, Clark was elected American Legion State Commander, the first resident of Yates County to hold this position. Part of his duties included visiting every American Legion post home in the state, and as a result he logged 31,600 miles on his Legion-provided car. He visited Yates County posts in Penn Yan and Dundee in March 2006 for a homecoming celebration of sorts before he concluded his tenure a few months later.
In 2011, the Department of New York State elected Stanley as its Alternate National Executive Committeeman, one of two representatives of the state on the American Legion’s National Executive Committee, the organization’s policy-making board. With a two-year term as the alternate, Stanley once again became the first resident of Yates County to have this role and was in line to serve another two years as National Executive Committeeman.
Stanley’s son Stan also served in the Army and is currently the commander of the Yates County American Legion. From a patriarch who achieved his freedom from slavery, the five generations of the Clark family in Yates County have each made their own contributions to their country and their community.

Thomas Richardson of Norwich (UK) was dismissed by the pub and hotel chain for gross misconduct in August 2022 after he spoke to a female colleague on Pride Weekend about whether or not God would “forgive” gay people.
Richardson, who was 21 at the time, attempted to sue Wetherspoons for his dismissal on the grounds of discrimination.
According to court documents, the former bartender had said that he didn’t want “the gay thing shoved down [his] throat.”
Documents also note that Richardson had regularly made what he calls “anti-woke” posts to social media.
In some posts, Richardson complained about the Black Lives Matter movement, describing it as a Marxist terrorist organisation that supports Black supremacy. Elsewhere, he compared the movement to Nazi Germany."
He tried to sue on the grounds of religious belief, and being autistic.
Being autistic myself, he can go to the hell he apparently believes in, which is pretty much what the judge ruled.

Ever think... Sully eventually became Dean Junior's childhood friend?
Not because DJ needed him. But because Sully always kept an eye out for Sam, and he was so damn proud of him becoming a father. He just couldn't resist to visit DJ every now and then, and play with him.
One day, Sam heard DJ talking in his room. He went to check on him.
"Who're you talking to, buddy?"
"To Sully. He says you a he'o and uncle Dean was too! Like my Spidey, only cooler!"
Sam's smile made his dimples show, as his eyes scanned the apparently empty room.
"Hey, Sully. Good to know you're around for DJ."

In the finale, right before Sam is leaving the bunker for good after Dean died, there's a moving shadow in form of a human silhouette on the wall under the stairs. It's someone on set walking through the lightning, for sure. But my headcanon is, its Dean’s ghost. Dean only left for heaven once Sam was ready to step out of the bunker into a future without his brother. Only left once he saw Sam looking forward. And it fits with the narrative too, because only after this shot do we get to see Dean in heaven.
(I wish I could gif this part of the video. It's a blink and you'll miss it moment, but so obvious if you know.)

Meine #1 des Jahres 2022
It's the strangest thing. But in Sam and Dean's heaven, the weeks have only six days. There's no Tuesdays. It takes Dean a while to realise.

TIL that the hellsite has easter eggs for developers
So! It is 4:20am as I am writing this post (I am not kidding) and I had been experimenting with a script for the hellsite because it had been buggy for a while.
(As you do, as a fullstack software developer with nothing else to do on a saturday at 4:20am.)
And that’s when I found out that tumblr apparently has EASTER EGGS for developers in the console!
It says:
"Hello developer! Welcome to Tumblr. We've added a few tools in the "window" variable below, you might find them helpful when developing extensions. P. S.: We're hiring!"

Honestly now that I think about it, the part that's the most striking about the scene where Grian finally tells Scar they're soulmates is the fact that Scar goes along with it at all.
Scar can see the dripstone and he knows what it does. Grian has led him into this exact position before with glib promises of safety on his lips and then killed him. The first thing Grian did to him in the last game was steal a life from him. As far as Scar knows, Grian is his opponent in this game and he has no qualms about killing people with traps long before his red life.
And yet Scar follows Grian willingly onto the target and does not try to get away, apparently content to let Grian hurt him if that's what Grian really wants to do. But of course he looks away at the pivotal moment, focusing instead on something soft and comforting. Who would want to look their best friend in the eye at a moment like that?

Hermitcraft's Season Nine combination of "creeping eldritch horror" and "Looney Tunes shenanigans" actually blends in an oddly pleasing way. Like, yes you could see a rock with a bloody flesh-geode inside, or a machine that eats worlds, or a library build on nothing inside an endless void, but you could also watch a guy splat himself like a bug against a bank vault door for ten minutes or watch someone drop an anvil from the sky onto their rival's sandcastle. What could be next?

Can't stop laughing at how smoothly and instantly Scar pivots from "my cookies are all natural and not those nasty processed Giga-Pies" to "my cookies are SO processed you would not even BELIEVE how mechanized and automated these cookies are" as soon as he gauges his audience. What a sales-elf!

Cleo's stream today is very funny, she has pointed out the obvious fact that she and Bdubs have had conversations about Twitter and Tumblr as far back as the trouble she had on Tumblr back in 2020 or so, and that Bdubs is very aware of the existence of internet content beyond what is tagged to his attention. She agreed wholeheartedly that him pretending he doesn't is very funny, though.
Now I've got the image in my head of Bdubs trolling Hermittwt the way a dad plays hide and seek with a little kid. "Oh NO! Is there something hiding BEHIND THE DOOR? Maybe I'll go over there and TAKE A LOOK! Or... is there something IN THE CUPBOARD?" and meanwhile the fandom is standing behind the curtains, making a visible fandom-shaped lump in the fabric and giggling loudly.

Here is BabyTea’s soup recipe from yesterday, with the changes we made. It cooked up quickly and was easy - we used the frozen shiitakes I buy in bulk from the Asian grocery, plus some dried porcini mushrooms I had in the pantry. I think any combination of mushrooms would be delicious.
If you want lots of broth, keep half a cup of barley, but I like a thicker soup. Also easier to feed babies.

Also, it’s a stroke of genius that Sir Walter Elliot is a baronet - he has exact one title below him he can look down on. He’s not a peer. He doesn’t sit in the House of Lords. There are richer landed gentlemen - Mr Darcy, if they happened to meet, could buy Kellynch Hall as a cute little investment property.
This article suggests that the cost of an estate would be about 30x the amount it generated in a year. A different article suggested it probably cost about £600/annum to rent Netherfield (and thus presumably Kellynch Hall, plus or minus some). If Sir Walter’s income was £1000/annum, he would apparently be in the 1%, which does rather put into perspective the Bennets, doesn’t it? And I doubt his estate is well managed.
Anyway, while he would definitely be a super rich dude by the standards of his day, it’s like fancy doctor rich, not top tier basketball player rich. Everything he has, from his title to his land to his income to his history (not very long, in the grand scheme of things) to his appearance, is relatively substanceless for the amount of weight he and those around him accord it. He’s a very little man, and Austen’s readers would very much be able to pick up on just how little he is. Which is, incidentally, why he’s also such a fucking sycophant to anyone even slightly higher up the social ladder.

Poor Van Helsing - he gives two very simple instructions: don’t leave Lucy alone and make sure she wears the garlic flowers around her neck all night. And over the course of ONE FUCKING WEEK literally no one not even the dudes who are in love with her can manage this. They’re not even getting whammied, unlike the maids and Lucy!
Van Helsing, initially: well this isn’t fucking ideal but it’s early enough in the process, we can definitely -
Van Helsing by the end: I think you just want to fuck around and find out and by god you have found out.
Poor Lucy.

september 10th, 2023.
hello.
everything has changed since we have last spoken.
dad died.
october 27th 2022 dad died in his sleep. alone at the house in new hampshire. i was in arizona with mom and had been since august 2022. he was planning a trip to come out for my 21st birthday in november 2022.
it's been impossible the handle. i cant lie and say i've been good. i'm literally on autopilot. it's like that was the final straw. i had already been bone tired, but the chaotic grief that was august2022-march2023 sent me into a spiral. i had countless breakdowns and the months were categorized by the notable (by others, multiple times) presence of a depressive episode. i was down to 112lbs again, not on purpose this time.
it broke at the end of may 2023 when mom's friend sandy took us to her timeshare in aruba. we stayed on eagle beach and i swam in the caribbean ocean every single day for two weeks. i felt like i shed my fucking skin and left it there. i was literally ecstatic when i came home & working felt great.
i've gained back a lot of weight and i haven't felt bad about it once. i actually have a completely different physique than i ever did before cuz i've worked 5 days a week since feeling better (feeling better=gaining weight). i've gotten strong. like really strong, and my muscle definition is pretty impressive. [impressive enough for others to comment on it, not my own words]
also, the Covid-19 pandemic is officially over. well, right now there's a little spike happening (seasonally expected - like the flu), but i think it was in may 2023 they announced it was no longer a pandemic. it was apparently not an epidemic either, so literally all of the precautions were dropped. and also, i had covid, again. for the third time. i had covid on my 21st birthday. which was insane because a couple weeks before my birthday i vividly remember say out loud to mom "the only thing that would make my birthday worse would be if i had covid,".
and then i had covid.
all i can do is laugh because i literally speak prophetic truth but it can only be right if the event is a fucking bad one. whatever.
21, so adult, right? yeaaahhh... cuz i bought a fucking house too.
like, actually. well, i guess not actually. mom bought the house for me. with money from the sale of the jericho house. my childhood home, sold!! fine by me. which is true, and not something i am compelled to lie about, yet still raises a red flag to half mast in the back of my head - i really don't care much that the house is gone. everyone made it sound like i should've been sad about so i'm kinda just hoping it hits in a little while. i haven't even accidentally tried to drive there instead of going to the new house though...not even once.
i love the new place. we just moved in on august 28th. it's in a trailer park, and i really hope i'll be able to make friends with the people in the houses around. i have no direct neighbors though, cuz the houses are being replaced. it's sooooo quiet.
anyway, just wanted to tell you all that.
oh, and i can't believe how much of this journal is about him. it's weird to read that much about someone you barely think about nowadays. but i guess it makes sense, as to why he's been so hard to undo. i guess i never realized how bad it was while it was happening. sad to think about. there's been more incidents with him since we last spoke as well, but i won't waste energy discussing them. he doesn't deserve it.
thanks for listening!! bye!

1) What’re your plans for the weekend? Absolutely nothing lol. I feel like I've not had a proper break from work in ages as Archie was really sick last weekend so we ended up down at the vets. This week has just been insane too so it's really nice to just be able to relax.
2) Could you ever be vegetarian - why or why not? I was vegetarian on/off for a few years as a teenager but ultimately it's not really something I'm interested in.
3) Name a quote from your favorite TV show: "That's a lot of information to get in thirty seconds".
4) What time did you wake up this morning? About 6.45 as apparently my body clock is back to being on work-time lol. I didn't get up until closer to 9am though.
5) What chores do you do around the house? Well, pretty much everything that needs to be done as it's my house, lol. I mean, nobody else is gonna do it for me.
6) Do you like wind chimes, or do they annoy you? They're fine at other people's houses but they'd drive me mad if I had them outside my own house lol. Especially as they'd probably set the dog off barking constantly. 7) How much sleep do you usually get a night? Normally around seven hours.
8) If you could have any outfit, cost not an issue, what would you get? I'm not really bothered about having nice outfits. 9) Do you play any instruments? I can play a few but I haven't played them for ages.
10) What song would you say describes your life right now? The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars lol.
11) Do you have snacks lying around your room? No.
12) Did you get up to much today? If it’s morning, what are your plans? Not really, just normal household stuff. I had a lie in, fed the animals, let the dog out, vacuumed, did the litter trays, made breakfast, went back to bed for an hour, washed up, showered and now I'm just messing about online and watching TV.
13) What’s your favorite animal to see in the zoo? Penguins, tigers, elephants, squirrel monkeys, lemurs.
14) When do you start back to school or college? I haven't been in any kind of education in over a decade now.
15) What other social networking sites are you on? Facebook and Instagram.
16) What was the best year of your life? Hmm, overall I would say 2007, 2016, 2018 and 2022.
17) What plans do you have for the rest of summer? It's only February but mostly I spend my summers working and riding, plus I have a couple of weeks off in August.
18) How old is the person you like right now? He's just turned 38. 19) Do you get an allowance? How much? No, I have a full-time job lol.
20) What games console is your favorite? What about favorite game? We have an xBox but I haven't played it in ages. I liked Gems of War, the old-style Lara Croft games and also Super Mario back when we had a Nintendo.
21) If you could go anywhere right now, where would it be and why? I'm honestly happy just chilling out at home today. I need a lazy day after how manic my week has been.
22) Do your parents nag you a lot? What about? I don't live with my parents so it's not really their place to nag at me. My mum sometimes complains about the state of my car though lol.
23) What is there on the walls of your room? There are a couple of paintings but that's about it.
24) Is there anyone that just really annoys you? Oh yes.
25) What are your plans for tomorrow, anything good? Just a chilled out, lazy day as I have another fully booked week next week. Luckily Mike is off so he can sort the dog out lol.
26) If you could wake up tomorrow being able to do one thing perfectly, what would it be? Sing.
27) You have two wishes to make to help the world, and one can’t be “another wish” or anything similar. What wishes do you make? Clean water and ample supply of food. <--- this.
28) Do you reckon world peace is possible or are we just too selfish? People are way too selfish.
29) Do you listen to Bright Eyes? Wow, nostalgia alert lol. I used to LOVE Bright Eyes - especially Lua and Bowl of Oranges but I've not listened to them in YEARS. I might download them off Spotify actually. 30) Are you interested in politics, or do you just not care? It's not that I don't care, it's that I don't think anything us "mortals" do can actually make a difference.

At a Defense Ministry Board meeting on December 21, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced several structural reforms to the Russian army. Among other things, the reforms will change who is subject to conscription under Russia’s universal (with many exceptions) mandatory military service, raising the eligibility age range from 18–27 to 21–30. The reforms will also increase the maximum size of Russia’s army by 490,000 people, and they’ll make it possible for those who are conscripted to sign up immediately as contract soldiers (a different classification of military service, which pays soldiers relatively well, but dramatically increases the chances they’ll be sent into combat). Meduza unpacks Shoigu’s announcement to explain why now, what the Russian army hopes to get out of the changes, and what it all means for draft-age men in Russia.
On Wednesday, December 21, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced reforms to the Russian army at a Defense Ministry Board meeting. This announcement is, in itself, a virtual admission of the military command’s many mistakes in Ukraine, which have become apparent to the entire world during Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Several of Shoigu’s points are devoted to an upcoming increase in the army’s size (clearly, Russia’s armed forces were too small for the war in Ukraine).
The maximum number of service members in the army (contract soldiers, conscripts, and those who have been mobilized) will be increased from 1.15 to 1.5 million. Moreover, in August 2022 Putin already increased the army’s size by 140,000 people. This means that, compared to the beginning of the invasion, the army will grow by a total of 490,000 people.
The number of contract soldiers should rise by 290,000 — to a total of 695,000. The plan is that, by the end of 2022, the Russian army will have 521,000 contract soldiers, and that they will, according to Shoigu, partially replace draftees (though he did not specify how this replacement will work).
A decision was made to create five new motorized rifle and air assault divisions and an army corps, as well as to deploy more than 10 brigades per division (assuming the number of service members in them increases two- to three-fold). Several new aviation regiments and brigades, and five new artillery divisions, are also planned. Evidently, already-mobilized Russian citizens and post-reform contract soldiers will form these new divisions: existing formations, even with an increase in the number of staff, cannot absorb hundreds of thousands of new soldiers.
Apart from that, the age for conscription will “gradually” change. People will be conscripted starting at age 21, not 18, like now, but the upper age limit for conscription will be 30, instead of 27 as it is today. (It is still unclear how exactly this will be accomplished.)
But 300,000 new contract soldiers is still fewer people than the 490,000 Shoigu plans to add to the army. Is a ‘new wave’ of mobilization coming?
That doesn’t exactly follow from Shoigu’s announcement. He spoke about increasing the maximum size of the army, not about the real number of service members. The army’s maximum size is an organization-and-accounting value. It’s necessary so that the government knows what quantity of funds to reserve for financing army posts: military salaries, benefits, allowances (for provisions, uniforms, and so on), and equipment. In other words, it’s not a given that in the near future 1.5 million men will really serve in the Russian army.
At the same time, increasing the military’s general size will in fact happen partly due to service members who were enlisted during this fall’s mobilization campaign, and partly due to new contract soldiers. But it is not clear if these sources can provide 490,000 new troops.
We don’t know exactly how many people were mobilized. The authorities said 300,000, but the campaign’s true scope might be different; the figure from Putin’s decree about mobilization is classified.
Some mobilized people were sent to replenish existing units that suffered losses due to killed and wounded service members and those who terminated their short-term contracts. It’s not clear how many casualties there have been, but the new recruits who were sent to compensate for them have not increased the baseline size of the army.
At the same time, some of those losses were compensated not by mobilized soldiers, but by service members who signed contracts after the start of the war (they probably number several tens of thousands). Judging by Shoigu’s planned increases to the number of contract soldiers, we can assume that the enlistment of new contract soldiers will only accelerate. In other words, it’s impossible to state the exact balance.
One way or another, this doesn’t mean there won’t be a “new wave” of mobilization. The Ukrainian Armed Forces and other power structures in Ukraine reached, according to official data, more than a million people by summer, meaning that Ukrainian troops outnumber Russians at the front. And Ukraine has continued its mobilization. In addition, the Russian army continues to suffer heavy losses, and may once again face an acute shortage of manpower in a few months.
Where does military command expect to find hundreds of thousands of new contract soldiers?
Apparently, they expect to find them among conscripts. The authorities plan to allow people to sign contracts as soon as they’re conscripted, instead of doing their mandatory service.
Remember that Shoigu plans to increase the number of contract soldiers by almost 300,000, and that every conscription drive, in fall and spring, collects 120,000–130,000 new service members (a total of 240,000–260,000 a year).
Why turn conscripts into contract soldiers?
To send them to the frontlines.
Currently, Russia observers an unspoken ban on conscripts participating in combat. It’s not formally legislated and is sometimes violated (one of the most famous examples are the conscripts aboard the sunken cruiser Moscow), but not, apparently, systematically violated. If conscripts start signing up en masse as contract soldiers, it will give Russia’s military command free rein to send them to Ukraine.
Why do the authorities want to change the conscription age range?
It’s probably for the same reason: to get more recruits into the combat zone.
First, it’s easier (in a social sense) to deploy people who are older than 21 than to send people who were just recently schoolkids — it arouses less discontent in society.
Second, due to fluctuations in the birth rate in recent decades, there are almost 330,000 fewer current conscripts aged 18 to 27, than potential conscripts aged 21 to 30. It’s true that in coming years this effect will weaken; people of conscription age will be almost exclusively the small generation born between the mid-1990s and the early 2000s.
What else is changing in the Russian army?
Russia’s authorities decided to reconstitute two military districts, with centers in Moscow and St. Petersburg, which previously existed until 2010. This is likely also an attempt to fix past mistakes. Troops from the Western Military District, headquartered in St. Petersburg, suffered the most serious defeats in 2022. They fought in the spring in Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy, and in the summer and fall near Balakliya and Izyum — both battles ended in heavy defeats, retreats, and gigantic equipment losses.
It’s difficult to say, however, if the reform will improve the efficiency of these “elite” troops stationed around Russia’s two capital regions.

John Juniper: Sometimes I get so caught up on being gay that I forget I'm actually bi.

Juniper : *Walking in to a room* Sorry I'm late... I was... doing things.

The Sandman has been released on Netflix.
Today, day 4 of its debut, I typed in a search on twitter and noticed this result:
Image description: twitter search results for "thesandman" come up as "TheSandman" trending, "TheSandman gay", and "TheSandmanNetflix".
This is because fans are talking about all of the LGBT representation on the show.
LGBT rep from the main characters, who are integral to the plot. Characters who are interesting and who have depth.
Now for comparison, this is a search I made last year (October '21) after previews of the mcu movie Eternals release:
Image description: twitter search for "phastos", first result is "phastos", followed by "Phastos hiroshima".
I took this screen shot of one of my many searches in 2021 for the character name "Phastos", because I wanted to document fan reactions to the 'first openly gay character' from the mcu.
Well, let's just say that Phastos and his onscreen husband Ben didn't take the Internet by storm. And hardly surprising as they're both side characters, Ben is only a cameo, and as the popular search results show the most talked about point for mcu's 'first openly gay' character was apparently he helped humans make the atom bomb.
And that was about it for Phastos in the entire movie, which is a great waste of potential.
We knew nothing of his life with his husband Ben or their child; does Ben have super powers? Does their child? Do they know Phastos is immortal and will outlive them? How can brief cameos of one kiss (shot in the dark at night, compared to the much longer scenes of het romance shot in bright lighting and daylight) ever answer all of the questions we have?
And in fact, why should we even care about these characters when it's clear that the studio does not?
The mcu have pulled the same nonsense with the recent Thor Love and Thunder, after much self-hype for Valkyrie finding love, all that actually happened in the movie was she briefly mentioned a long dead ex-girlfriend, and briefly kissed a nameless Extra on the hand in one scene. All while the hetero relationship is taking center stage of the story, just like Eternals.
None of that is LGBT representation, Disney. And don't you dare try to suggest the rocks somehow make up for the lack of PROMISED LGBT representation onscreen.
It's actually appalling, and I wish fans would wake up and stop falling for this obvious baiting. Disney/Marvel Studios will keep taking your money while only providing mere seconds of half baked scraps onscreen, easily cut from the movie and not mattering to the overall plot.
Aren't you hungry for more?
Watch The Sandman on Netflix and be inspired to see yourselves be PART of the main story for once. With characters who have depth, and motivations, and spend more than brief seconds on the screen.
The Sandman has: many mlm and wlw characters, and also multiple androgynous characters including Desire played by a non binary actor (Mason Alexander Park):
Image description: an androgynous white character dressed in glamorous black clothes with feathers, wearing makeup on their face, reclines on a red chair.
The Sandman is a perfect example of how LGBT representation can look, what a studio is actually capable of providing with the right direction.
So please, watch it. See for yourselves.
Image description: Netflix poster for the Sandman showing a diverse cast of characters.
My review: The Sandman is a must watch piece of media.
This show of 10 episodes has the most LGBT representation onscreen together for any live action adaptation of a comic book that we've seen so far (August 2022).
The Sandman is a beautiful exploration of story, characters, visuals and dreams. Compelling and inspiring. A welcome breath of fresh air; watch it and feel inspired.
Together as fans we must say, this is what we want, and we demand more of it.

Lucifer: Season 5, Part 1 Thoughts
Part 1 of Season 5 of Lucifer came out on Netflix on August 21. And you bet your bottom dollar that I binged all 8 episodes. I stayed up until 2 am on August 22, but it was worth it. I’m not sure if the cast, crew, writers, and producers went into this season thinking it was their last (It’s not, Part 2 of Season 5 is rumored to be out in February of 2021, with the final season, Season 6, rumored to be released in early-mid 2022.) or what, but they really brought their A game for the first 8 episodes of the season.
What follows are some random thoughts I have on the season. Yes, there may be spoilers!
- I really like that the last couple of seasons have explored the supporting cast more. Maze, Ella, Linda, Dan - they are being fleshed out a lot and I am living for it.
- Seeing more of Linda’s backstory was great. And, I liked the way it tied into Maze’s own feelings regarding Lilith and abandonment. I am here for Linda x Maze, may that be a deep friendship or something more. I always love them together.
- Speaking of Maze - it is getting repetitive to see her be pissed at Lucifer (who really needs to step up and see that she is her own demon with thoughts and feelings.) or being down on herself for not being able to make solid connections. Maze, you have connections: You have a best friend in Linda, friends in Chloe, Ella, Amenadiel, Trixie, Charlie. These people are your found family! They love you, Maze. But, Maze has to learn to love herself. Stop betraying them because she’s upset. All that said, Lesley-Ann Brandt always brings her A-game.
- I didn’t care for Lilith. I get what she was trying to do and that, in the end, she wanted mortally and love, but even she couldn’t find it. But, she abandoned her children. :( I’m thinking her ring will play a key role down the road: either to give Maze mortally/a soul, give Eve immortally (so she and Maze can be together?), make Lucifer human, save Chloe, something! That ring is coming back into play.
-Amenadiel worrying about being a good father to baby Charlie. It was really cute, as is his friendship with Dan. The scenes with Dan, Amenadiel, Lucifer, and Jed trying to calm the baby were comedy gold. I also really loved seeing Amedadiel working a case with Chloe. He’s just grown so much as a character during the last five seasons and I’m here for it.
- Dan finding out about Lucifer was a bit of a surprise. Poor guy. He’s been lost since Charlotte’s death and all this new age stuff seems to be his way of trying to find meaning in his life. And, now he has to deal with the fact that EVERYTHING is real and his ex-wife/friend is in love with the actual Devil. And, he has this great fear that he’ll go to Hell, because of all he’s done - and knowing the Devil is real - of course that is going to mess with his mind! And, Michael - playing on fears - knew just want to do with that. I’m interested to see where Dan goes during Part 2 of the season.
-I felt so bad for Ella. She decided that she wasn’t going to go for the “bad boys” and that she was going to look for a nice, normal man for a normal romance and what does she find? A freaking serial killer! Who was using her and planning to kill her! Like, Ella, girl, take a break from dating for a while. She either dates men with no futures, serial killers, or Dan.
- I have to give it up to Tom Ellis in his portrayal of Micheal. So twisted and cowardly and yet weirdly I get it? From what the show has told us or implied - before his fall, Lucifer was one of their parents favorites, made Michael miserable, was a favorite of some of the other siblings. I can see a twin becoming jealous and causing issues. It’s interesting that Michael straight out stated he planted the idea of rebellion in Lucifer’s head. Michael planted the idea of causing Eve to sin. Of coming to Los Angeles. I’m wondering how much of it is true and how much was Michael just speaking nonsense. And, what else has Michael planted in Lucifer (or anyone else’s) head? Did he plant Chloe in God/Dad’s head? Did he pretend to be God/Dad and tell Amenadiel to bless the Decker’s with a baby? Oh, the possibilities.
-While I didn’t love episode 4 (it felt a bit like filler) - it was so good to see Tricia Helfer, back on the show. I miss Mom and Charlotte.
-Chloe finding out she was a blessing/gift from God/Dad? I am so thrilled they didn’t get too angsty with it and played it perfectly. Yes, she had every right to be confused and upset. But, thank goodness they didn’t drag that out! The writers really hit a lot of great beats with Chloe this season.
- I have read that some viewers were annoyed that Chloe was/is worried that Lucifer doesn’t lover her back - when he has shown his love via actions - but, I get it. Lucifer is Lucifer. He self sabotages, he refuses to deal with issues, and he tends to pull away. He become invulnerable - right after it was more or less agreed by everyone that Lucifer chooses to be vulnerable around Chloe because of his love for her. She might be thinking: “Okay, will he get bored? Is this real? Will something else happen that makes him pull away?” Chloe needs to have a solid talk with Lucifer, and it’s a talk that he may not be ready to have. As a show-runner hinted: “You can’t fully be in love with someone until you fully love yourself.” And, we all know that Lucifer is still working on loving himself.
- I was really proud of Lucifer during the first half of the season. He stayed in Hell to protect Charlie, Chloe, and the world. He only left to deal with Michael and he was smart enough to leave Amendadiel in charge. He was honest with Chloe, he tried (in his own way and to the best of his abilities) to give her space, he bonded with Dan, he got jealous (that was hilarious), he moved forward with Chloe, he tried (again in his own way and to the best of his abilities) to not freak out over losing his “mojo”, he admitted (to others and himself) that he NEEDS Chloe, he found Chloe. He showed some nice growth. He’s by no means a mature and fully realized “person” yet, but it’s clear he is trying.
- When Dad/God showed up? I had no idea Dennis Haysbert had been cast in the role, so I was so excited. He’s a great choice. I love that he came down from the Silver City to break up a fight between some of his children. His ex walking around Earth? Demons coming to Earth? A half-angel being born? Eve coming down? Cain and Lucifer fighting? Dad/God’s not bothered by that. He’s not coming down for that. But, his children fighting? Yeah, he’s physically and completely coming down to break that stuff up. I’m excited.
- So, 5A mentioned the Silver City and some of the other angels often. We learned that many of Lucifer and Amenadadiel ‘s siblings are praising Lucifer for going back to Hell to protect Earth. Something which Michael can’t stand. We also learn that Dad/God has locked himself away and that Michael is the only one he speaks to. You guys - I NEED to see some of the other angels or at least hear about them. Maybe even hints of what the Silver City looks like? Uriel may be dead, but Azrael and Remiel are still in the Silver City. And, the show has mentioned a Castiel, who enjoys music. We’ve also heard about Gabriel and Raphael, who are apparently proud of Lucifer for being mature enough to return to Hell on his own. I’m actually wondering how many children Dad/God and Mom actually had together? So far we have nine angels/children. Did they have hundreds? Thousands? Just those nine?
- Let’s talk Deckerstar. If you are a fan of Deckerstar, as I am, then you were loving 5A. There was awkwardness, angst, cuteness, sweetness. They were flirty and playful. When they FINALLY had sex? Linda and Ella weren’t the only one celebrating. And, I loved that it really seemed that BOTH Chloe and Lucifer spent 5A trying to be honest and straight forward with one another. They seem to have realized that they’ve wasted too much time and they have to try and be honest with one another, even if it is very hard.
- Overall, I LOVED Part 1 of Season 5 and CANNOT wait for Part 2. 2021 cannot come soon enough!
-And, I’m sorry, but Lucifer gifs are lined up in my queue for days to come.

NEW YORK
2022 June 21 (Tue) – Today is the first day of summer! The weather has been absolutely lovely! I love this time of year on Long Island.
I had a mammogram this morning. Ouch!!! It seems that machine gets meaner every year. The tech told me there is a new machine on the horizon. It is a small, round machine with two holes in it. The woman would lay down and put her breasts in the holes and the machine would do a CT scan. Sounds a lot more comfortable than today’s process.
Paul and I then drove over to Staples in West Islip to see if they had any bags. They had some hanging up but not the image we wanted. Paul asked the gal to check in back and see if they had any bags with the mountain scene on them. She found the 12 more we needed. Yay!
We enjoyed lunch at the Peter Pan Diner. We both had omelets. The food was good and, yes, expensive. We’re in New York now.
After lunch, we went to the cardiologist for our annual checkups. Paul got scheduled for 2 tests and I got scheduled for one. *sigh* It never seems to stop.
I called our vet to get some help acquiring the Yuunan Baiyao herbal supplement to help with Bonnie’s bleeding. She referred me to a pet acupuncture hospital. At first, the receptionist refused to see us. The first new patient appointment wasn’t until August. When I pressed to be put on the calendar as an emergency appointment, she gave in and scheduled us for this Thursday. However, we will have to pay the full examination cost.
I then had to make one of the most difficult calls I have ever had to make. I called Laps for Love, an animal hospice that comes to your house to put your animal to sleep. I made an appointment to have a vet come to the house next month to put Bonnie down. Both Paul and I were crying. It breaks my heart to have to do such a thing.
2022 June 20 (Mon) – We ran my laptop over to Best Buy. A piece came out of one of the USB ports. Now none of the ports work. They seem to be all connected together. The tech took one look and said the computer was toast. It is almost ten years old, which is ancient in the tech world. *sigh* Looks like I’ll have to buy a new one.
We both went to our family physician for a check up this afternoon. I can never understand why I make the exact same appointment for Paul and me (complete physical annual checkup), and he gets the checkup and I get weird treatment. This time, I had a form for clearance for cataract surgery and that, apparently negated everything else. The nurse took my blood pressure and temperature and listened to my chest. The doctor came in, sat down, chatted, and signed the papers. He never touched me or verified that the information in his file is correct. The clearance form he gave me has old things on it for medications and ailments I used to have but don’t any more. It was so slipshod. I was furious. And I never got a physical. That’s a separate event.
We went to CVS to get Paul’s prescription for cholesterol medicine filled and then to Staples to return an item we purchased last week. We found large bags with images of mountains on them. They will be perfect for the Alaska trip next year. Unfortunately, they only had 8 bags. We bought them and after verifying the store didn’t have any more in back, we drove to the Staples store in East Islip to see what they had. They had bags but not the image we wanted.
2022 June 19 (Sun) – Susan had a barbecue at her house today to celebrate Chris’ 60th birthday. His daughter, Shannon, flew in from Colorado. His girlfriend, Monique, also came to the party. Paul and I were there with Caiden and his friend, Xavier. We also picked up Chris’ ex-father-in-law, Bob, and drove him to the party. Susan, her husband, Bill, and their daughter, Shay, were also there. The boys spent most of the time swimming. Later in the afternoon, after the weather warmed up a bit, Paul, Bill, and Shay did a little swimming, too.
After we got back, I watched the boys until Kenny got home from work. Miranda is due to get home from Pennsylvania tomorrow morning.
2022 June 18 (Sat) – It was Noah’s birthday today. We made a video and sent it off to him. We took Caiden and his friend, Xavier, to the carnival tonight. They had several rides, played a game, and ate hot dogs. Then we walked into the mall (the carnival was set up in the parking lot of the South Shore shopping mall) and bought the boys ice cream. They also played on some kind of jumping rope game and ran around the indoor play area. I think they had a good time.
Miranda drove to Pennsylvania tonight to attend a planning meeting for witch camp next month. Kenny got home from work around 8:30 p.m.
2022 June 17 (Fri) – We spent the day working around the house and on the computer. It was an easy day.
2022 June 16 (Thu) – We took the truck to Safelite in Bay Shore today to get the windshield replaced. When we were in Pennsylvania, a rock flew up and left a deep chip. They couldn’t put the SUPERDUTY sign back on the windshield, which annoyed Paul to no end. We walked up to Main Street and walked up and down, noticing all the changes that have taken place over the years. There are many eateries and shops in town. It is a far cry from when the sidewalks were full of the mental impaired when the psychiatric hospitals in the area (Central Islip and Kings Park) closed down.
We stopped at Toast Coffeehouse for lunch. The noise level in that place was deafening! They need to put some buffers on the ceiling and walls. I had chicken salad on a salad and Paul had a wrap. It was another $33. Things are just expensive these days.
At 1:30, we went back to ophthalmologist for pre-op. They took measurements of my eyes and took all kinds of pictures. When all that was done, it was time for the billing clerk. She explained the whole process of what is going to happen during surgery and how they bill. I paid the first part of the bill. I also asked the doctor to change his plan to the left eye. The record said he was going to do the right eye first, but that’s just the cataract surgery. The left eye will get not only the cataract procedure but also a lens to repair my vision. Since it is more complex, I think he should do it first. That will give us more time if there is any problem (which he assured me there would not be).
After the doctor, I went down to the first floor to get eye drops that I will start using 3 days before surgery. I think my friend, Bill Brown, had it right. The Gold Years Suck!
Bonnie had a bleeding episode tonight. We scrubbed the rug and I tried to dab her muzzle and wash off her paws. She is making weird sounds – like gurgling in her nose and huffing. It sounds like it is difficult to breathe. Her appetite is still good. We are feeding her everything she likes – chicken with rice, lunch meat with her pills, and left overs.
2022 June 15 (Wed) – It was a busy day today. First up was the gynecologist. He said this will be my last pap smear. Yay! But I still have to come back in 2 years. What’s he going to do then, I wonder?
We wound up in Babylon. Both of us worked for the NYSDOT in Babylon and it was interesting to drive past the building and through the town to reminisce those early years. We then stopped at the Atlantis Diner for lunch. As with all the diners nowadays, the bill was high.
There were a few more stops – post office, ShopRite, Home Depot and Firestone Tire (the truck had a flat tire this morning) – we then drove to Bohemia where I had an appointment with the orthopedist. I was looking for an evaluation of my left foot, which has a bunion, arthritis and a bone spur. He suggested surgery. It would be like having a broken bone and would take about 3 months to heal. I am not interested in investing that much time and turned down the surgery. The doctor then shut down on me and didn’t want to talk much about any other options and exited the room quickly. Guess I’ll suffer with it.
2022 June 14 (Tue) – I went to the ophthalmologist this morning. He said I have cataracts in both eyes that need to be removed. He also said I have a stigmatism in my left eye. If I also have that repaired, I will be able to have some long distance vision restored. He offered to do the surgery by laser but it is not covered by insurance. It will be $1,700 per eye. The surgical center, supplies, anesthesia, and doctor’s fee will be covered but not the laser treatment. It’s considered elective surgery when the laser is used. Weird, huh?
We stopped at the Millenium Diner in Smithtown before the doctor. Whew! Over $30 for 2 eggs and bacon for me and 2 eggs and sausage for Paul with a small bowl of fruit between us. Then we drove to Home Depot to pick up more parts for Paul to finish up the dishwasher installation. He finally got it done. He ran the machine through a cycle to make sure it works. Unfortunately, the owner’s manual was inside. It is now a wet blob. Hopefully, we can download something online.
2022 June 13 (Mon) – I saw the oncologist today. She does not plan to do any scans. She says they have changed the procedure. They don’t do scans because of the danger of radiation exposure. We will just do physical exams and bloodwork. I am disappointed by this but we’ll see how it goes. I go back in 3-4 months.
We went to the cheesecake factory for lunch. I enjoy their chopped salads. It was smaller than usual but everyone is cutting back in different ways.
We went to P.C. Richard and scoured the scratch & dent section. We bought a Beko dish washer. It is a new European company that is entering the U.S. market. Reviews are very good for the company so we bought one of their dishwashers. Unfortunately, when we got back to the house, Paul found that it is wired for European households and not American. He had to pick up plumbing supplies to make a change to accommodate the difference. He worked on it all day and didn’t get the problem resolved.
I am heartbroken. Bonnie has cancer of the mouth. The upper jaw bone has disintegrated and the cancer is going up into her nasal cavity. The cancer is inoperable. The doctor suggested that we could try radiation but what good would that do? It will not restore the destroyed bone. We just have to watch her get worse until she can’t eat any more. She is still spry. She was running in the yard today. I find myself crying at odd times. I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about Bonnie’s condition and where this is going.
2022 June 12 (Sun) – We went to church this morning. Everyone was very happy to see us and we were happy to see everyone. I was asked to be lay reader at an upcoming Sunday service.
After church, we drove to Bagel Boss and enjoyed a bagel. Paul had his with butter and I had mine with tuna fish. That was our once a week treat.
We then drove to Hallmark to get birthday cards and to Staples to check on printer ink. They still are not producing our printer’s black ink. It is very frustrating.
When we got home, Caiden was looking to play warrior. I begged off for a nap. Paul was working around the RV on electric plates and the electric panel. Later, I went out and convinced him and Miranda to take a walk down the block. He took his sword and Miranda, also with a sword, walked along stopping at key points to conduct a battle.
2022 June 11 (Sat) – We took Bonnie to the vet this morning. Her doctor says the mass in her mouth is solid and could be cancer. She needs to be seen by an oral surgeon. Dr. Thode referred us to VMCLI down the road. The oral surgeon there is the only board-certified doctor on Long Island, although he has an assistant who has been at that office for a year or two who is very good. When I called to make an appointment, it was the assistant we had to make the appointment with. The board-certified guy couldn’t fit us in his schedule until late August.
We made a few stops on the way home – got fuel, picked up liquor, and purchased lottery tickets. Miranda went to work at noon and Kenny went to work at 4:00 p.m. We watched Caiden until Miranda came home at 9:30 p.m. For dinner, we went to the Oconee Diner. I tripped on the stairs going into the diner and fell down. I will hurt tomorrow! Caiden had a huge plate of spaghetti of which he ate two or three bites. They also gave us free dessert. We turned ours back but Caiden enjoyed his ice cream. Our meals were pretty large and we took home leftovers.
Once we got home, Paul retired to the camper and I went into the house to watch Caiden. We played warriors for hours. It seems all that kid ever wants to play is mock battles. He has swords and pretends we are fighting. It gets tiring after a while.
Miranda got home at 9:30 p.m. and I was glad to slide back into the camper.
2022 June 10 (Fri) – We packed up and left Elverson, PA, at 9 a.m. Rick & Brenda were also packed up and ready to leave at the same time. We bid each other good-bye and headed out our separate ways. The drive was long and full of traffic. The roads in New York are horrendous. What are we paying taxes for? We arrived about 3 p.m.
Kenny was home when we arrived. Miranda was at work. Caiden arrived on the school bus as we were setting up. He was thrilled to see us.
