People complaining about "gooners" is like another instance where people use euphemisms to hide how reactionary their opinions are. Like apparently “gooning” was slang for a specific kind of edging at one point, but the people who use “gooner” as an insult, use it to mean “people who masturbate, or masturbate too much” or less politely, “sexual degenerate.” But these people can’t say “people who masturbate” or “degenerates” because it is too revealing of the sexual conservatism they are arguing for, so they use “gooners” instead.

not to be a joyless pedantic communist but all those snarky tweets and writings trying to like, freudianize or psychoanalyze conservative slash fascist slash whatever rhetoric (because you know they use them interchangeably!) are always a little stupid to me. sure you can say it's the desire to see the world as simply as you did as a child or whatever but that is way down the list of "reasons why someone might suscribe to these ideologies" and it's under the much, much more pertinent point of "it materially economically benefits them in some way".

can you elaborate on what you consider cohost's "soft play area" philosophy? as far as i could tell, they allowed porn, nudity, gore, and radical politics. my gripe with the site was just regular transmisogyny...
sure -- when i say that, i'm not referring to their moderation policy (which, to be clear, i have entirely separate complaints about wrt racism and transmisogyny) but rather to the actual affordances the websites offered its users -- specifically, in pursuit of an ideological opposition to 'metrics', cohost intentionally obscured information from you like 'who reblogged a post' and 'what additions have been made to a post'. the intention of this was to attempt to prevent clout-seeking or unhealthy user relationships with analytics, which, y'know, admirable goals both, but this implementation in my opinion took away options that i use on other websites to have fun and keep myself safe.
like, part of the reason i am able to have a nice time on the computer here and be somewhat insulated from the harassment campaigns that inevitbaly appear when you dare to be a trans woman online is because i very aggressively and proactively block, i block people who are being rude or annoying or bigoted on my posts, i block people who reblog that addition -- and likewise, i mostly like tumblr because it feels like i can have conversations here, i look at interesting additions to my posts to reblog them, either to add my thoughts or just to share another perspective or clarification on what i said with people. & this is just one particular example of a broader pattern, in which cohost's design was very hostile to discoverability (again, for theoretically good reasons) and expressed that through stifling your ability to access information about the interactions you were having on that website

A fight we can win together
Hello, Tumblr. It’s Casey and Bri, founders of Unvale. We’re reaching out to those who are as frustrated about generative AI as we are. Right now, it feels like we’re in a battle of technology against creatives. A battle of greed against humanity.
As the founders of Unvale, a creative platform that’s 100% AI-free, it has been disheartening to see the rise of AI online. Our team stands opposed to every AI tech company that is trying to remove creatives from the creative process. Big social platforms are already ingesting your content, your voice, and your likeness, building a model that will take opportunities away from real people. It’s disgusting, and it should be illegal. We have to push back. The platform we are building is already home to over 200,000 aspiring artists, writers, and creatives looking to develop their stories and share their work. We believe that the future of creativity should remain human-made, and we want to give anyone passionate about an idea a shot at creating something spectacular. AI is the cheap, quick win. We know that building something meaningful takes time and effort, but it’s also immensely rewarding. Like creatives, we believe in the power of human creativity.
Right now, Unvale could use your help. If you believe in our anti-AI message, please consider:
Spreading our message. If you already love Unvale or just resonate with what we’re saying, please share our platform with others. We are a platform for humans, and we need humans to advocate for us, not bots.
Joining our platform. It’s free to sign-up, and it’s a great site to slowly build your characters, your worlds, and your amazing stories in an AI-free space with big potential.
Never stop creating. We need flawed, genuine, thoughtfully-crafted art in our world. It’s the only way we make new things. We need it to let the next generation know that creatives aren’t going anywhere.
We grew up spending most of our time in human-made, fantastical worlds, from Star Wars to D&D campaigns. We know how escaping into these worlds can literally save you. And we’re not going to let AI win without a fight.
This is a fight we can win together.

This holiday season, please consider supporting Dahnoun Mutual Aid’s campaign to provide winter clothes and blankets in Gaza. Dahnoun is a Gazawi-run grassroots initiative that has been providing thousands of people in multiple areas of Gaza with water, food, baby milk, diapers, tents, and other supplies since July. With your donations, they are able to buy blankets and clothes in bulk at a reduced price and give them out at no cost to people sheltering in displacement camps. Their Chuffed campaign is linked above, and you can find their Venmo and Paypal in addition to documentation of the past several months’ aid initiatives on Instagram. The blankets and clothes fundraiser is detailed in a recent post: instagram.com/dahnounmutualaid

"it's ok if you pirate it" "make sure you write really gay fanfic about it" can you just ever fucking shut up about the lame fucking wizard books? go die in a hole already instead of making everything about your pathological inability to read another fucking book holy shit. just shut up about it already. fuck off forever and never come back. you are not helping anyone by turning a conversation about transmisogyny into reminding everyone you'll have a fucking aneurysm without your racist fucking tory wizards.

I really feel like the word "gooner" is so common now just cause some people really wanted to call someone a degenerate without sounding as much like a nazi doing so

the thing about how liberals demand purity from revolutions (remembering the yellow Parenti video) ties into a wider discussion—about how there seems to be a pendulum between extremes, where any "progressive" group or movement is expected by its opposition (usually the more liberal factions) to operate with either zero nuance and moral perfection or absolute nuance and constant hyperbole,
just like communists must be morally flawless to earn support from liberals —their revolution must be bloodless, their policies must accommodate former and current fascists, and there’s no room for nuance in revolutionary violence ("You’ll be just like your enemy!" and all that)—transfeminists, too, must be individually pure, their goals explicitly and hyperbolically inclusive of every possible group, their willingness to collaborate always at its peak.
this applies to any historically progressive movement today, whether communists, transfeminists, or others. Anti-Zionists must always account for poor little Israeli lives in every sentence. Anti-racists must always acknowledge poor/disabled/queer/whatever white people. Anti-imperialists must constantly remind everyone that poor (and Black, and Native, and queer, etc.) Americans exist. You either account for every possible exception in every statement, or you’re not truly progressive by liberal standards.
and god forbid you commit the unforgivable crime of an emotion-driven one-liner—then your reputation is forever ruined by the Serious Liberals. alternatively, you must be hyperbolic, swearing that everything will be perfect—no blood spilled, no convictions handed down—when prejudice and inequality are finally defeated, whether in a specific struggle (misogyny, racism, etc) or the broader class war.
with allies like these—who demand you be morally immaculate, completely disarmed, endlessly inclusive in every sentence, and terminally rational in even the slightest political remark—who needs enemies?

and because everybody in this putrescent country is an absolute shit idiot with no historical awareness or even present awareness, they call it and the concentration camps in el salvador "gulags"

I don't understand why anyone would want to read fiction about lgbtq+ struggling instead of being happy
because I don't think of books as escapism I think of them as works of fiction with themes and characters
