ya'll should thank @shabby-blog extra special for this one because they are 100% the reason this story even got dropped this year. They are also the driving force behind the fact I'm still working on it

as an extra special 3 year anniversary gift and because chapter two is taking so long to finish (it's a beefy bitch) everyone's Christmas present is access to the OG doc that was started on this day 3 years ago. Meaning this doc is from the era I was still writing Mic's Bullshit Life

the version on ao3 was started in October of 2021, then I don't think I touched it again until AFTER I had done the BNHA big bang and written some percentage of crumbled rooftops since that was THE focus

Genuinely one of my favorite things about Stray is the relationships. Emi and Shouta being exes and yet still close best friends. Nemuri showing up in Hizashi's apartment like "WAKE UP NERD". There's some great relationship things coming up in chapter 2 that I know you guys will love but writing the way these characters interact is a treat

I'm so glad that there are people who like this one and I'm so sorry it's taking so long to get more of it done but i promise. The next chapter will be worth it. And then chapter 3 will be extra worth it (even though I haven't even started that yet)

This is so far my only published cloudnight story and it's also mistnight so it's obviously first and foremost the best thing I've published

I count this story as an apology for what I did to people in chapter 6 of crumbled rooftops

I LOVED writing this one so much. Particularly the opening bit where Kurogiri is like stunned into silence by Nemuri just being Nemuri.

Obviously it takes a lot of cues from the way I write Kuroboro in Crumbled Rooftops in regards to the dynamic between the two of them as well as introducing how late story Kuroboro will probably behave. Getting to go ahead and write Kuroboro where both parties are in agreement that this situation is permanent and are fine with that was a lot of fun since that's the end goal for CR.

And obviously it's always fun getting to write for Nemuri, particularly since the story I gave her the biggest role in is also one of my saddest. Getting to write a dynamic between Nemuri and Kuroboro was WONDERFUL. Obviously a lot of it is pure headcanon because, at most, in canon Oboro definitely crushes on her.

And on that note it's not that Nemuri has an easier time seeing Kuroboro as he is now compared to the Oboro she knew than EraserMic, it's just that the circumstances in this story are different. I didn't get to delve into it so much, but Kuroboro is on far better terms with them as well since he's not competing with them losing Nemuri. Obviously it's still hard on all of them to cope with Kuroboro as he is now but it's EASIER since theu'de not also grieving for Nemuri

AND FINALLY

YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT TWO CHAPTERS OF CRUMBLED ROOFTOPS HAVE COME OUT THIS YEAR

Listen. I KNOW it takes me forever to update this one. And I'm once again going to say that shabby is a fucking godsend because they are the reason I managed to get chapter 5 done after I had to rewrite basically all of it just to get it to a point where it was good enough

This story is my BABY, OKAY. It takes a lot of cues from Mockingjay and the entire Hijacked Peeta storyline that I didn't realize until I reread that book earlier this year. And it WORKS.

We hit two pivotal points in this story this year, one of which has been in my mind since the story was originally outlined for the BNHA big bang last year and the other that I kind of happened into.

So to go into chapter 5 first- the Tensei reunion is one of my favorite parts of the story. The way Tensei interacts with Oboro was so GOOD. He is open and honest with Oboro (with the exception of exactly one moment) and it gives Oboro a perspective on things that sets into motion what happens in chapter 6

Not to mention the Eri and Oboro bonding in this chapter is absolute perfection. Eri dropping "your quirk hurts people too doesn't it" and Oboro realizing how similar they are is. Just. One of my favorite things.

BUT CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER. FUCKING. 6.

I am genuinely not lying when I say that one of the first scenes in my head for this story was Oboro confronting Hizashi and Shouta about Nemuri. I wanted the story to get to that moment so bad and I didn't know when or how I was going to get there

So obviously when I started chapter 6 and knew in my heart that THIS was it, it was going to happen in THIS chapter, I knew I had to do it right. And judging by the comments I got for it I feel like I nailed it (LET ME HAVE MY CONFIDENCE)

giving Oboro the single happy moment of finally being called Uncle Oboro was my apology to him

And I want to give a shout-out to the ending of that chapter specifically, since it's one of the few times I acknowledge the manga storyline that's currently ongoing rather than sticking to anime only information. Considering how long it's taken to write this story, when I knew for sure I was going to make Nemuri's death a pivotal part of the plot, that was going to be the major manga spoiler. But the anime beat me to it and suddenly before chapter 6 came out, the audience reading it was more likely to have the same information that everyone but Oboro had- that Nemuri was gone

HOWEVER while it's not particularly a big part of the plot character wise, the original ending to chapter 6 was going to be Oboro alone on the rooftop of UA. That had been set in stone since the reveal scene happened. But at some point in the final arc, at least two of the towers of UA get destroyed. Whether it's ACTUAL UA or not (thanks @machiroads for planting a doubt in my mind lol), my immediate thought was 'oh SHIT my FANFIC'. Because it was absolutely important to me that Oboro warp to the roof of UA, since in his mind it's safety. But suddenly that wasn't there and it changed how that last little bit of the chapter had to go and HONESTLY. IT WORKS SO MUCH BETTER.

I have no idea how long it's going to take me to get the next chapter out but I can tell ya'll this- we're entering the next arc of the story now. The biggest secret is on the table, and what happens next is going to define a lot of how the characters interact with each other and I am so looking forward to sharing it with everyone

Ok headcanon since in the manga it's says torino was like Yoda or referenced? Idk atm what if him,nana and yagi binged starwars like all of them from new hope to revenge of the sith

Gran Torino is inspired by Yoda! Confirmed by Horikoshi, in a post-SDCC interview, if the wiki is to be trusted. They share the elderly mentor gremlin vibes. At least Gran Torino has better tastebuds… but can you imagine him feeding Izuku (and Toshinori) the most awful nutritional recipes ‘for growing boys’?

Now, taking into account all the Star Wars references in the BNHA universe, and the lack of acknowledgment that they are, in fact, references: I posit that LucasFilms doesn’t exist as an entity at all. BUT LET’S IGNORE THAT!

Depending how you frame the BNHA timeline, either all the SW movies are out and they sit through a six-movie marathon (sequel trilogy disowned for lack of commitment to thematic messages), or Nana, Sorahiko, and Toshinori got to see the OG movie trilogy as it came out from 1977-1983.

I’ll go with the latter, because I want feels (I think you may have wanted fluff but… feels).

OKAY, THINK ABOUT THIS:

It’s 1977. Toshinori is fourteen years old, and he has somehow convinced Nana that he’s not only got the ambition, but he has the DRIVE to be Japan’s Pillar of Society. Coincidentally, A New Hope releases in theaters. It’s fate.

Toshinori is obsessed with Luke Skywalker. Not in just a hero way, if you catch my drift (if you never had a crush on a celebrity/fictional character at fourteen, you may not relate). He gets one of those plastic lightsabers for Christmas, and Nana indulges him with play swordfights. Sorahiko pretends to be the training droid and throws ping-pong balls at Toshinori in the name of training situational awareness.

(Luke’s mentor died. That’s not a sign at all. It isn’t.)

It’s 1980. Toshinori is seventeen years old, and he’s entered his third year of U.A. Empire Strikes Back leaves a bad taste in his mouth, because that’s not a happy ending. Who could’ve seen Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker’s father!?

Han and Leia don’t map perfectly onto whatever is happening between Nana and Sorahiko, but Toshinori can see it. Nana teases Sorahiko about cosplaying as Han Solo. Yoda’s method of teaching is hotly debated; Toshinori and his class suffer exactly a week of experimental physical training, but Toshinori takes, “Do or do not; there is no try,” to heart.

(Nana dies the following summer. The villains have won, and Luke might have lost a hand but Toshinori has lost his mom.)

It’s 1983. Toshinori is twenty years old, and he’s watching Return of the Jedi with Torino. It was kind of an unspoken agreement that they would see this trilogy to its end. The happy ending is heartwarming; all that effort to save Han Solo, the Ewoks on Endor, the galaxy from the Empire--they deserve the catharsis a party can bring.

Listen. Listen. Toshinori may or may not have cosplayed as Luke Skywalker in the all-black outfit, just to, y’know, see whether or not all-black would be cool. (And it totally was). Sorahiko may have caught him sounding catchphrases off in English and playing with his old plastic lightsaber again. YOU DON’T KNOW.

(The best part about ROTJ is its ending. Toshinori wouldn’t mind seeing Nana, even as a ghost, smiling at him and being proud of his achievements.)

Idea that’s been living in my head rent free this week: Hippies BNHA ~a the looks, the music, the activism~

The biggest is Deku singing Piece of My Heart by Janis Joplin. He’s a 💚🌼forever flower child🌼💚 full fro, suade vest with matching pants, flower power shirt, large peace pendant and an over sized Give Peace A Chance button. He couldn’t go to the war front but became a nurse over there and then counselor at a VA hospital. Sicken by what he’s seen, what he knows his countries done.

Second biggest is of course, Bakugo - a night on the town is high waist black bell bottoms with an orange and black satin shirt as explosive as him/ his day to day look is an over sized military jacket, his own dog tags, aviators, and a black “fuck the military and their lies” shirt. One of the first to come back from Vietnam, his dad was a ww2 vet, thought he was doing something honorable for his fellow man. All he got is shrapnel in his arms and visions that won’t let him sleep. Remet Deku when he got back and Deku is working at the VA hospital, he’s not in Dekus group but sees him around- Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Shoji- He’s dressed like a detective idk why. Ex church goer, couldn’t stand the praise he got when he came back. Tokoyami doesn’t praise him but gives him somewhere to focus his atonement. Great at community outreach, just always seems to have enough hands to do everything. Keeps his mind and body busy, and he’s grateful for it. Moondance by Van Morrison

Shinso- A purple disco suit? How does he make it look like casual wear? The world may never know. A slam poetry king. Makes people feel and wanna create change. Somebody To Love by Queen

Kurogiri can even shroud himself with the black mist to hide his true body and personally transport anything out of himself.   which allows him to dodge attacks

Things don’t really change all that much even after we start dating, which is a relief. We still roast each other on the daily, he teases me about my height and I get back at him for his messy hair I really wouldn’t have him change for the world and his magenta titration he swears never existed

He led them to the center of the town, which turned out to be populated by members of Re-Des’s army, including his top brass. Everyone attacked at once, and the League set to work kicking ass and not even bothering to take names because they’re just gonna kill everyone anyway so who cares! The chapter ended with Toga gettin’ ready to throw down with Kizuki, a.k.a. my new badass lady villain fave who can blow shit up with her mind, holy crap.

Today on BnHA: The Liberation Army continues to battle the League, confident in their eventual win, mostly because Re-Destro has somewhat smugly deduced that the League currently has no Noumu to spare. Kizuki, who is apparently a journalist, faces off against Toga and hounds her with questions about her past. Seems she’s specifically the type of journalist that likes to harass people about all of the most personal and private details of their lives. Toga sets to work stabbing all of Kizuki’s redshirt goons and sucking their blood, but this winds up backfiring as Kizuki makes brutal use of her quirk to blow up said blood. So basically she explodes Toga from the inside out. Somehow Toga doesn’t fucking die, and although I Have Questions About This, we can save that for later since the story is moving forward with or without my suspension of disbelief, and next up on the agenda is a motherfucking Toga flashback, folks.

(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my mostly-unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’m caught up with the manga now at chapter 226, so any ETAs will reflect that.)

by the way, getting back to that earlier panel for a second, it occurs to me that of the three “rescue” arcs we’ve had thus far, only one has featured an actual damsel, and that was a baby damsel at that. like, a six-year-old girl. so like, that was more about her being a small child than her being female. and meanwhile the “damsels” in the other two arcs consisted of (a) the toughest motherfucker in class 1-A, and now (b) the most hardboiled fucking guy in the entire series. and by contrast, female characters have played critical roles in all three arcs on the rescuing side, and now we’re about to see two lady villains fucking throw down

like, I know I give Horikoshi a lot of shit for not having more badass female characters, but a lot of that is because BnHA honest to god is a cut above most other shounen manga to begin with when it comes to feminism. and it just makes me want it to be even better, because I know it could be

god, I can’t wait to be reading manga like 20 years from now, though, when Japan is (hopefully) finally a bit more woke

and shouldn’t he know about Gigantomachia, though? even the heroes know about that one. if they were spying on the League with a fucking satellite, wouldn’t they have noticed the giant boulder man continuously trying to crush Tomura for two-day stretches at a time??

I love how Horikoshi makes the distinction between villains who at least care about their own, and villains who don’t give a fuck about anybody. like, the League is still evil -- Toga stabbed a man in the neck not ten pages ago -- but there’s no doubt whatsoever who we’re supposed to root for her. Toga is just as crazy as this lady, but she tied a handkerchief around Twice when his mask got torn. meanwhile Kizu blows up her own subordinates so she can get the hot goss from her victims before she murders them

I love the description of her as a bright and reasonable girl, though. back when she first disguised herself as Camie I suspected that it might be her, but it seemed far-fetched because she showed herself capable of being perfectly logical and sane while disguised, and it was a side of her we’d never seen before. but I love that, though. I love that Toga’s particular brand of being unhinged doesn’t require her to be dumbed down. she’s brilliant. she just also happens to really, really like stabbing people

A random thought: sometimes i think about robin from the Original Timeline(TM) and like. I just wonder what they were actually doing and how they joined the Shepherds, cause they didn’t have amnesia in the first timeline (i’m pretty sure somewhere it says the amnesia was caused cause grima tried to join with robin after coming back in time, but robin was too weak, and the attempt gave them amnesia) so like. first time line robin. were they infiltrating the group because validar told them to? were they running away from plegia? if it’s the former, did they ever actually grow attached to the shepherds or was it all an act? I just think about OG Timeline robin sometimes, what is up with them, i wanna know

An unpopular opinion: Lots of people say that the characters are one dimensional because they’re all just one defined trait and then everything is built around that, but I really like how all of the characters are because they all feel so unique and distinguishable. You know how I keep making crossover aus? Part of the hard thing with assigning characters to roles is that most characters in bnha are very similar and don’t have their own traits. Meanwhile, all the FE characters are distinct and rememorable. Heck, one dude’s gimmick is that he’s a normal guy because,, there just aren’t any other people who are Normal Guys.

Least Favorite character: I actually can’t think of a character I honestly dislike all that much, besides the obvious ones like Garon, Iago, and Hans. Like, Yukimura maybe?? I feel like he could have been cool as a sort of antagonist figure but then he,,, wasn’t. He’s just so boring to me.

An unpopular opinion: the story of fates isn’t That Bad. Like, okay, there are some parts that are just stupid, I won’t deny that, but people beat it down like it’s the worst story ever. it’s just a video game! the story was entertaining enough, the characters were lovable, you guys are just mean. leave the flaming chainsaw sword alone.

I like how Leo just sent Odin on quests that were supposed to be impossible, but Odin just somehow did it anyway like a fucking madlad and Leo is just like *suprised pikachu face* and so he’s like “okay i guess i can tolerate you” and they become friends and it’s like?? i just enjoy that.
