“guys guys come on, she’s big enough to handle shit on her own” beck tells them, popping himself a canned of black coffee and she secretly thanks him for being the most logical one. “but just in case you want a croissant or something just let me know”

“i’ll pick something up from the bakery, just let me borrow your keys” she replies and getting ready to stand up, earning a collective of no’s and hands holding out to stop her. “you all realize that i’m not five?!” she’s getting a tad bit irritated,

“gotcha but!” carlos holds his point finger up, “we’re all instructed to take care of you—“

“no we didn’t?”

“chang, you’re ruining it, shut the fuck up” carlos glares at his asian frat brother who’s hands are up as if to show defense. “anyways—we are instructed to take care of you and if miguel finds out that we’re doing a terrible job at it, all of us are dead. literally”

“i think you’re just exaggerating, carlos” she tries to smile despite wanting to kill him. “he’s not capable of killing anyone”

“didn’t he get into a fight with two guys for staring at your ass and talking about how they’d use you at the same time?” glen chimes in, leaning forward on the kitchen table,

“that doesn’t count, it was not a fight, it was a slaughter. o’hara went apeshit” beck chuckles, taking a seat beside her,

“okay well that happened nearly months ago” she points out at the specific memory, one where she had to stop miguel from going overboard. she’d hate it if her boyfriend went to jail for what happened, “it’s all in the past”

“yeah well those two men are still on his black list” beck shrugs, “you know how serious he gets when it comes to you, kid”

she sighs for what it feels like a hundredth time that morning. “okay you know what, if it gets you all to be quiet, especially you carlos” she throws a soft glare at the man who’s wearing an innocent smile, standing tippy toes. “then just—can i please have that BLT sandwich? i am starving”

carlos claps his hands, “absolutely, you gorgeous human being! oi, rookie! get down here! muñeca needs breakfast!” he calls out the boy from downstairs,

WAAAAH thank you so much!!! So glad you’re here and I’m SO HAPPY to recommend books to you because I was exactly in your position only a few months ago!

Okay. So the consensus within the fandom, especially if you’re an Obikin enjoyer (not sure if you are, but if you’re following me I suspect you at least find their platonic dynamic compelling), is that if you’re going to read one book it’s the Revenge of the Sith novelization by Matt Stover, and I agree with this. I’m not someone who was ever interested in reading movie novelizations but this book single handedly changed my mind. It’s exceptionally well written and just has this pervasive sense of growing doom that’s super unsettling while also giving a lot of emotional dimension to all of the characters in ways that film really isn’t able to. There’s a lot of interesting choices that are made—Anakin’s fall feels explicitly like Palpatine is taking advantage of an oncoming mental health episode and pushing him to snap, Anakin’s perception of the Obi-Wan/Padmé affair is tied more to anxieties about the two people he loves most not wanting him around than infidelity…there’s a lot of scenes that are in the book that aren’t in the movie that really just hit like a gut punch.

It’s absolutely great for angst, it’s written in such a unique way and literally the last scene gave me full body chills when I first read it. Horrible, beautiful, highly recommend it. Also uses second person narration in ways that are very clever.

(Also, it like…portrays Obi-Wan as like. A repressed gay monk in love with his oblivious straight friend and it’s incredible)

Now for my more personal recommendations for after you read that, if you want more!

I am a massive Rogue Planet and Jedi Quest enjoyer. They are honestly the cornerstones of my characterizations for these characters. Despite being a singular book and a middle grade series respectively, I group them in the same category for their absolutely incredibly compelling way it portrays the foundation of Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship—specifically how absolutely fucked it is in ways that aren’t super clear in the movies. They take place after the Phantom Menace and before AOTC, so cover Anakin’s time as Obi-Wan’s padawan.

Rogue Planet by Greg Bear follows Obi-Wan and Anakin on a mission when Anakin is 12 and there’s no way I can describe it other than it reading kind of like…what if the Virgin Mary was a permissive boymom who sucked at her job and the kid she’s raising has a 50/50 chance at being Jesus or Satan. Obi-Wan in this reads like the most 15 year old 28 year old ever, is still reeling from the death of Qui-Gon and has entered the motherhood phase of “my child is perfect and special and can do no wrong ever ever ever”. He’s extremely permissive and has hinged an unsettling amount of his hopes on Anakin’s role as the Chosen One because of his own personal issues. So when Anakin does shit like…oh I don’t know…accidentally explodes a man’s head with his mind…does things he isn’t supposed to Obi-Wan is like. Don’t Worry You Did Nothing Wrong I Will Ignore It.

And then hot on the tails of this is the Jedi Quest series by Jude Watson which follows their relationship after that on various missions as Anakin grow up. The series kind of focuses on the systemic ways in which Anakin leading up to AOTC was let down and what eventually drives his decisions later. Do not be fooled by it being a series for 12 year olds, it’s absolutely apeshit and additionally my favorite place for informing my perspective of their dynamic. Obi-Wan has gone from being boymom to being more emotionally distant as he tries to make Anakin be an “ideal jedi”. Jude Watson’s entire thesis is that like, Obi-Wan is not father brother or friend to Anakin, he is a Jedi, and does not have the tools to be anything else so his and Anakin needs and wants more. There’s this insane line at the end of book one where Anakin says like “Obi-Wan would come to love him. He would make him do so” which just acts as the through line for the entire series. the push and pull between someone who wants more and someone who consistently holds back creates this very unhealthy master-disciple dynamic that drives me insane. (I have kind of an uncharitable perspective of Obi-Wan because of this but it’s actually what made me love him even more, I prefer Jude Watson’s portrayal of him to almost any other author)

Book of the Week: Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage

Author: Qian Shan Cha Ke (千山茶客)

Genre: ancient setting, josei

Rating: M (very mature, dark themes but not too graphic of depictions)

My Synopsis: What happens when a girl gets tired of being nice and decides to go apeshit? You get Shen Miao, our adorable 30+ year-old protagonist recently stuffed back into her 14-year-old self and ready to eat the flesh and drink the blood of her enemies! Using this new lease on life, she’ll methodically and maliciously ruin every antagonist’s life using the tools in her versatile skillset, including: knowledge of the future, a psychological understanding of assholes, weaponized gender stereotypes, and men. And lest we forget our love interest, Xie Jing Xing: the boy/man (cause god forbid the author know how old anyone BUT Shen Miao is…) who thought he had it all figured out until he discovered that Shen Miao is a horny drunk. See just how far they’ll go to bathe in the blood of their enemies while keeping their loved ones safe in this very long but extremely satisfying novel.

My Actual Review: It’s so satisfying to see a previously downtrodden character scheme her way into a happy ending, and Shen Miao fucking deserves it. Some reviews that I’ve seen have claimed that the LI eventually takes over her revenge schemes, but I didn’t see it. They just partner up and she uses his manpower to do what she wants. There are also places where their separate goals intersect, so it just makes more sense for him to do the cleanup. The thing about Shen Miao is that she has no issues with letting others do the work for her, especially if it’s against people she wasn’t invested in putting work against to begin with. It’s the empress in her, I fear. As for the main pair as a couple, I loved their every interaction, and their descent into romance felt natural and gratifying. Greatest thing about this romance is the fact that it truly kicks off because Xie Jing Xing did not know to guard against horny drunk Shen Miao lmao!

The translation is pretty good outside of some clunky grammar, but once you train your eyes to glaze over the the five-millionth time the translator inserts directly into the story to complain about how often the LI is described as hot (unlike every other character, I guess???) as if this book is their early 2000s fanfic, it gets even better! Another thing that may or may not be here nor there is that this author is really weird with age consistency. Like, “MC is forever un-aging while everyone else ages 2 years every few months” weird. Shen Miao is forever 14 until the time skip in which she is forever 16, while Xie Jing Xing goes from “the same age as the students” to “17/18ish” to “vaguely in his 20s” during the same course of time where we literally never see Shen Miao acknowledge a birthday in any year. As for more serious content warnings, this story involves underage relationships (including non-explicit sex, marriage, and pregnancy), rape as a weapon, (assumed) incest between cousins, child abuse, and described but not explicitly shown torture. Though there are some humorous parts, this is not a lighthearted story. Read if you want something dark with an ultimate happy ending.

Dimentio is unconsciously reenacting what the Pixl Queen, or his sister Shadoo, did. After getting driven to madness by being resurrected in a vessel with the Dark Prognosticus, she brainwashed every Pixl, formed an army and tried to destroy the Ancients for their selfishness and supposed egocentrism, so she is technically destroying a kingdom.

I never worked much in the time-line of events, but before all of that happened, Dimentio and his mother Illuminata died, because Merloo, the father and great magician, was researching the Dark Prognosticus and one day he tries a spell and everything goes wrong.

A recurring theme in the family story is how everyone of them had a tragedy, the father gets obsessed with the Dark Prognosticus and kills both his wife and son in an accident, the mother dies protecting the son, the son is cursed with immortality by being bound to the book, and the sister gets ill because of the dark energy the house had, dies, is brought back, dies again, now by her brother's own hands, gets cursed and also locked away in the Pits.

You can say that Shadoo and Dimentio are the ones who suffered the most, and depending on how you see it, yeah they are, but imagine living the rest of your life thinking that you ruined everything, like, EVERYTHING, because a book was "that" important. That's why Merloo ends up helping with the Light Prognosticus, but also completely alone, as if you see in the game, he's the only sage who, apparently, has no descendants.

Before I forget, Pixl Queen Shadoo had the DP, when Dimentio "kills" her, he takes it, tries to protect it from evil, but reads it in morbid curiosity of what is written there, people steal it from him and then he starts getting insane, just like Bleck. ^v^

In conclusion, Dimentio is traumatized, but instead of having a chance to really think about his past and not commit any crimes, he has the DP talking in his head and leaving every other memory to the side, which is why he has kind of an amnesia and why he knows roughly where the thing is. In other words, the book makes you go crazy, and after living so many years and so many deaths I think that the person is very likely to just go apeshit after some point.

Ah, and about the thing with being a servant and wanting to be king at the same time, I don't take what he said in that part too literally, because I do believe that his motivation was to make a perfect world without all the rotten evil people in it, that would explain why he doesn't like the Count, Dimentio may know he's bad too, but he's being bad for a greater or purer reason. The role of servant is mostly just a strategy to be seen as someone who is vulnerable and eager to please, a perfect lie to hide the strings he's holding.

can i just say, i love the complexity of the characters outside the goshiwon as well. jieun and jaeho who are supposedly meant to be jongwoo's girlfriend and friend, are just so caught up with themselves, whether unwillingly, in jieun's case, or willing, in jaeho's case. jieun's horrible work relationship with her boss where absolutely nothing she does is correct whilst having more and more work being put onto her, slowly breaks down her capacity to cope to the extent that she isn't able to spare any attention to her boyfriend's problems since she is unable to properly deal with her own. the way she scolds jongwoo in ep 4 when he complains about the eden residents, saying nothing comes from being nice, i think she is very much saying what she wishes she could tell herself but when push comes to shove, she could never actually stand up for herself against her boss, leading her to push that pent-up anger and frustration on to jongwoo, calling him too 'sensitive' and to get over it. i think she is mad at her own passivity adn taking it out on jongwoo, since he's probably the only person she can exert some power over in her life.

jaeho is just a jerk point blank, i think the entire fandom has picked up on much of a narcissistic bastard who simultaneously has an inferiority and superiority complex he is. any time jongwoo tries to stand up for himself, jaeho's ego flares at the thought of not having the man squished under his thumb. he belittles jongwoo, guilt-trips him, asserts his seniority over him, crosses the clear boundaries jongwoo has set about not talking about the goshiwon to others just to force jongwoo back into his plac below him just to satisfy his frail bruised ego.

on a separate consideration, the nature v nurture debate surrounding jongwoo. personally, i believe that the entire series is about how much nurture, or the people around you, influence you and your actions, thoughts and behaviours. the show being called 'hell is other people' kinda indicates that it is the people around you that can make your life a living hell. after all, jongwoo was seemingly normal before moving into eden. additionally, the show goes out of its way to highlight jongwoo's good nature, when he buys food for the stray kittens and moves jieun to walk in the shade. i think everyone has the capacity to do heinous things within their nature, no one is born a serial killer but everyone has the potential to become one given the right (or i guess more accurately would be the 'wrong') circumstances. and as much as we all love to think moonjo was the one who gaslighted and manipulated jongwoo into giving in to his anger and hatred, and go apeshit, that anger and hatred was built up because of those people closest to him, his girlfriend, his senior, his co-workers, the stranger who kicked away the can of cat-food he brought. literally, everyone around him pushed and shoved him around like a piece of garbage, overstepping his boundaries and treating him like dirt or a punching bag. moonjo was the only who truly recognised jongwoo as an equal and wanted him to come to realise that himself.

She's already pretty techy (and also the literal DAUGHTER OF A TECHNICIAN), so imagine she takes her home to her dad like "hey I have a new best friend" and I think it'd be nice if Cassie and Roxy duo heart emoji but I'm also thinking of the possibilities of

If- very, VERY big if- the virus is still around, or at least the fucking device implanted in her head because of the "Security Mask" (YES I'M STILL INSANE ABOUT V.A.N.N.I BROTHER IN CHRIST) potentially corrupting and disorienting the way she sees reality as like

okay i need a summary of the S5 finale

someone in the server just asked what happened in the story so far so i need concrete details of how everything's been settled

This is gonna be rough because I have watched all this go by in a fever dream and half-remembering stuff and maybe confusing it with the leaked script(I don't remember what was changed) and I do NOT have the energy to look up exact details rn but:

So Adrien and Kagami are in London locked in their respective rooms which are. Pretty blank just a slab for a bed and a foosball table.

They're also drugged I think? But their parents are using their Alliance Avatars to fake celebrity couple moments for the public.

Nathalie tries to kill Gabriel with a crossbow but he manipulates her long enough that she starts dying

Ladybug was investigating the Agreste Mansion for.... I forget why probably but it's sure not because she's suspicious of Gabriel due to Felix telling her his identity in a previous episode because she is absolutely shocked when she sees him transform.

Oh wait she's probably investigating because Gabriel kinda just Scarecrow Fear gassed the whole world with the Alliance Ring's programs and some other shit and sends out an alert on the rings like 'Oh no LB and CN have kidnapped Adrien and Kagami! Don't you want to help? Aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you want to go apeshit?' and a bunch of people turn into the most generic fucking blank 'just a body to fight' Akumas.

Ladybug decides to fight him instead of finding Chat for backup

Adrien is still over in London, blitzed as fuck in gay baby jail. He realizes he's kinda fucked up and hands the ring off to Plagg to escape. Plagg flies across the entire ffucking ocean back to Paris and finds Ladybug mid-fight.

Marinette is now wielding both Ladybug and Black Cat Miraculous. She's fighting Gabriel (who has all the others except the Peacock(with Felix) and the Rabbit(with Alix)). And she absolutely WRECKS him. We get a real good fight sequence including some cartoony nonsense like using Lucky Charm to drop a whole fucking grand piano on him.

Anyway. She's winning clearly. They end up in the basement crypt with Emilie's coffin. She knocks the Butterfly off him and into the abyss and like. We've gotten clips of Lila(or whatever her real name is) being in on this so obviously Lila's gonna pick it up.

Marinette has Gabriel pretty backed into a corner but she does the 'I'm sure you're still good you just miss your wife please don't do this give up!' thing. While dropping her transformation and offering her hand out completely fucking vunerable.

Naturally Gabriel uses Venom to paralyze her and steals both the Miraculous.

Gabriel starts up the Wish, which makes Tikki and Plagg go into True Form Godmode where they're giant magical multi-armed beings and do a fusion dance thing to turn into the Kwami of Reality: Gimmi. (this part is actually really cool just like the fight scene)

Gabriel has a literal last second change of heart(?) and asks Marinette to make sure Adrien never finds out that Gabriel was Monarch and that he only remembers the times he tried to be a good father(BITCH WHERE???)

He makes the Wish and fucking dies

Cut to some time later: everyone is back in Paris. Bustier as Mayor is going over soooo well she's turned everything into such a utopia of environmental consciousness(completely ignoring the time and money it would take to make these changes! And more importantly ignoring that even if Bustier isn't a corrupt politician, there's a fuckton of other actual corrupt politicians that would shut this shit down so hard).

They're celebrating Gabriel's 'sacrifice' in helping Ladybug defeat Monarch and he gets a statue(made of melted down Alliance rings) calling him a Hero! Adrien hopes he'll live up to that greatness one day!

Speaking of the Alliance rings, Tomoe gets away with helping Gabriel because she lies and is like 'oh we were totally hacked!' and everyone believes her.

Marinette does not tell Adrien the truth about Gabriel or even that Adrien is a Sentimonster. But hey she at least gives him the wedding ring Amoks?

We get a clip of everyone getting their Miraculous as a permanant Hero team and then having a party at the pool! All the kids are there(except Chloé who is off in London getting abused by her mother because 'oh she deserves it for*checks notes* reacting to the previous abuse she suffered in a not-perfect way!').

Nathalie is healed and fine and also at the pool party.

We get a shot of the woman who is either Emilie brought back to life or Amelie. No one is sure. It seems like Amelie because she wasn't mentioned elsewhere in the epilogue and she's also wearing black(Emilie is always in white, Amelie is always in black). But the leaked scripts and the character model sheet called her 'Emilie' so no one knows.

We get a final scene showing Lila's lair in the catacombs, where she has the Butterfly Miraculous and also the robo-army remote control thing from back when Chloé was mayor. She gets jumscared by something off screen and it cuts out

The transition shot from the awkward family lunch investigation to vegas at the safehouse cooking for Pete focuses on the attic, a delicious choice. Theerapanyakuls Be Atticwifing.

Honestly this scene with Gun and Vegas is heartbreaking. Vegas was so proud of himself for making a good meal for Pete and then Gun had to ruin everything.The way he hits Vegas with the ring so that it leaves a mark of the family crest. Interesting that we're just getting trigger flashbacks now, when Porsche has been around gunshots a lot. But he was actively thinking about it, so I guess it makes sense. Also, in Porsche's flashback before ANY jedi-mind tricks and lies that Korn was the one standing and Gun was seated across from Pat at the table. Korn Shot First. Also interesting that we do not get to see who shot Uncle Thee - it was Chan on Korn's orders to tie up lose ends once Porsche left and was obviously hunting him down, based on the fact that Chan calls Korn in the next scene to confirm Thee is dead and Porsche is in the wind. (Also, Kinn brought Pete with him to chase after Porsche!)

If Porsche had just shot Korn right now, everyone would have been a lot happier. Like, I'm just saying. Anyway, love the Incest Reveal Cliffhanger that is immediately walked back next episode with Namphueng revealed as a foster sister, not a blood sister. i feel like with sansa, there were so many assholes saying that sansa deserved to be taken hostage by the lannisters because of her mistakes in book/season one, so of course her stans rightly wanted to defend her from the horrible misogyny and victim blaming. but i think sansa’s defenders took it to a place of “she did nothing wrong in book/season one”, which ultimately kinda ends up reinforcing the “good victim” idea that what happened to sansa would only be wrong if she was a flawless person.

As the years go by, that “She's known sadness, and it has made her kind” quote people used to circulate in regards to Sansa around here kind of encapsulates the pitfalls of over-romanticizing her. It's like...her sadness (i.e. intense trauma) didn't make her kind, she was always kind; we just didn't see it as much in AGOT because her infatuation with Joffrey and King's Landing blinded her to reality (and even in AGOT we have her scene with Sandor where she shows deep compassion in a somewhat scary situation).

You know what the sadness really did to her? It gave her PTSD. It made her suicidal. It put her in so much shock that to cope, she started relying on selective memories and fantasies that she became convinced were real (Unkiss). It made her hate herself, and it made her think she was stupid and worthless.

Honestly, I would support her if instead, "she's known sadness, and it has made her apeshit".

And I know most of these fans mean well (shit, I was one of them when I first got into the fandom), and it's of course inspiring how strong Sansa is throughout. However, you start infantalizing her at a certain point by focusing on how soft she is. Kind of like, "that's right, Sansa, you have to stay meek and subservient and obedient and nice. That's what you're narratively there to do. Don't worry your pretty little head about it, and don't step outside your neatly feminine little box."

I remember seeing some amazing fanart of Sansa in armor with a sword, and people freaked out about it. "Sansa would never pick up a sword, OP doesn't understand Sansa at all if she thinks she would!" And I'm like...you're talking about one of, if not the most adaptable character in the series. If she had to, she would learn how to wield a sword. She may never love it or excel at it like Arya, but if it was her duty or her life depended on it, she would. And heck, maybe she would learn to like it! Just because she is traditionally feminine doesn't mean she can't widen her horizons! She is not a static character.

And also, examine why the idea of Sansa with a sword makes you so damn mad.

This cult of femininity around Sansa can get really icky, and you're absolutely right that part of it is in response to the intense hatred her character first received. But a not insignificant portion of it is just plain sexism, I think. The truth is, it's sexist if you think Arya is more badass solely because she likes more traditionally (for that time period) masculine things, but it's also sexist to put Sansa on a pedestal for presenting as more feminine and mild. To me personally, the way both of them perform or don't perform femininity is the least interesting thing about them. They're compelling because they're both scrappy survivors who learn how to shapeshift -- Sansa symbolically, Arya literally -- and have huge hearts and want to do what's best but definitely mess up a lot (which is a big reason why I love Daenerys, too).

I wouldn't love Sansa like I do if she wasn't a bit of a hot mess in a lot of ways. She can be a real prick! And she can be kinder than anyone in the story deserves! She convinced herself her scary crush kissed her when he didn't! You're doing amazing, sweetie.

Thoughts on Will? I know you talked about him plenty already but I would love to hear some unpopular opinions/headcanons/thoughts you haven't gotten to talk about in general

this man literally altered my brain chemistry and I'm 100% sure that if I had never read RA I would be a whole different person. Cracking open those books at the age of 9 unleashed all that pent-up autism and I was so so unhinged about him and that entire series. I wanted to be him so badly and gods I tried to be, took up archery, my parents gave me knives and I shamelessly walked around with that ranger cloak my mum sewed (fun fact on Helloween I always go as a ranger because its the only costume I own). Yes, I was the Weird Kid, but my love for that man gave me the confidence to be obsessively weird about anything I liked. And I'm so happy about that because otherwise, I think I would be so hobbyless and afraid to be cringy about anything. In other words, I love him.

I made my trans!will headcanon clear a bunch of times already so we're going to dive into my headcanon for that headcanon.

I like to think that as time passed and will got more comfortable in his identity that he stopped cutting his hair short. He cut his hair short because it made him feel more connected with his masculinity and it felt like something he needed to do because it was something a lot of men did. So when he started growing it out he was finally at that point that he realized that he doesn't need to go out of his way to change things he liked just because other men were doing it (HE LOVED HIS LONG HAIR!!!). In my heart, his hair got almost as long as Alyss's and he cut it off after she died because she often brushed, braided or tied it back for him and having to do it himself was too painful. Will rocked an almost bald head for a while before he started growing his hair out again, but he never let it get too long.

When john said will is short he meant it. That man is not taller than 165m (5'4) and it's a fact because I said so.

One of the headcanons I live most fiercely by is that will was a fucking mean asshole in the TRR. I know it's a children's book and all but I feel so robbed of will being mean. vesper: one of the first ones i actually thought up, pretty traumatized older brother to rumi!! has issues with dealing with grief and guilt over his dead bf. tree/plant person (i never gave any official names, but just think of those “[insert thing] as a person” designs!!), specifically based off a cherry blossom tree!! (im planning to draw his quick ref sheet next :D), has a big big sword!!

rumi: vesper’s younger sister!! also traumatized lol, main event that caused it was the same thing as vesper (it was this big deal i can go more into detail on later, its their motivations for like 90% of what they do), dealing with issues after essentially being left to cope and (try to, it didn’t exactly work out the best;;) all by herself/growing up too fast after mentioned event. even though shes younger shes taller than vesper and will never not make fun of him for it. very playful with her brother!! has a big big battle axe that i had so much fun drawing. also tree person, shes based off a willow tree :D, but shes missing her branch/antler thingies.

unma*: dead bf. liiiiitle bit of a femboy. he was really kind to vesper and loved him a lot and FEELS SO BAD about what happened. literally all he wants in his afterlife is for vesper to MOVE THE FUCK ON. desperately just wants vesper to be happy again even though hes dead and gone. honestly same goes for rumi, even though they werent as close as vesper and unma had been, rumi still really cared for him and looked up to him and feels awful about his death, and unma here just wants them both to stop holding on so tight to what happened, move on as best they can, and be happy again. (they’re both getting there eventually tho <3)

dorian: friends with ebony!! also vespers new very very loving bf (although where i left off in my lil imagined storyline theyre not OFFICIAL just yet bc technically in the storyline i havent gotten to that point, but i do already have many interactions imagined already lol), also in turns becomes friends w/ rumi :D. really nice guy, a wandering medic/healer who generally prefers to not kill anyone or attack unprovoked (but he will make exceptions,,,), has some guilt associated with those he couldn’t save, but handles it MUCH better than vesper… (but to be fair its not a very high bar to cross), carries around an umbrella that doubles as a fighting staff. really devoted to helping as many people as he can. as shown in the ref sheet, while i, again, dont have like any official name for his kind hes got those horns and a tail!! (mostly bc i enjoy drawing them hehe)

ebony*: very shy and really really sweet spider girl who lives in a library with a ghost boy!! shes actually trans :D. honestly a little bit of an anxious mess, similar personality to sucrose (genshin) and kohane (project sekai). aside from the ghost kid she lives with, she doesnt talk to many people, and doesnt have much contact with her family since they didnt have a great reaction to her coming out. theyre also kind of overbearing. for her design, honestly shes incredibly similar to muffet from undertale.

ghost kid*: sorry i have like,,, so little on him. i swear i had a name for him but ive COMPLETELY forgotten. if you have name suggestions give me them pls. i do remember how he died though, feel free to ask about that since it technically involves the town ebony lives in too. i do know he has a cute lil paper crown though <3

weiss: mature lesbian gal. shes pretty smart and serious and especially enjoys working with mechanical stuff. literally made herself a fucking gun. what a girlboss. she used to work as a doctor bc she really wanted to help her partner who has a pretty serious illness, but the place she worked for ended up doing pretty fucked up stuff “in the name of research” and she unwittingly helped in those projects. feels really guilty for it but shes still determined to find someway to save her partner. technically on the run with said partner, and they do lil shows together!!

jex: weiss’s partner!!! originally they were inspired by that specific kind of childish character where theyre like “lets play a game heehee!!!” *tries to fucking murder you* “what a fun game :D” (i love these kinds of characters), but theyre not exactly that extreme. however they do really enjoy doing incredibly risky things acting like its a game. just straight up gambles with death constantly bc they find it exciting. their illness really held them back when they were younger, pretty much never allowed to do anything by their parents since they were trying to extend their lifespan by as much as possible, and they felt like they missed out a lot on just enjoying the life they did have, so thats their goal for the rest of their life. they’ve mostly accepted their inevitable death (which pisses weiss the fuck off) and they really just want to enjoy the time they do have with their loved ones doing what they find fun. they also have a big fucking double scythe. because i was gonna give somebody here a synth and rumi already had the battle axe.

Laerion has two schools of thought, one louder than the other. Some fans see him as a breath of fresh air, an apparent voice of reason during the Dance calling out how the Targaryens are literally devouring their own dynasty via dragons killing dragons in the wars of siblings. That he was apparently a 6'6" chad totally devoted to the women in his life and nice to the smallfolk makes him further popular as a side character. 'Not all men. You're right. Laerion Velary0n would never do this --' style memes. The other half believe he's an interesting look at gender and roles, where he's content to let the women in his life call the shots, how he campaigns for peace, that he avenges children and cares for his sibling's offspring once they are gone. He's malewife coded or even interpreted as having some fun gender concepts going on.

Mira is a brown woman in hypothetical canon. Most of fandom hardly fucks with her, except to make her an accessory or antagonist to their best loved Stark sister. I can see her fandom largely being built on other biracial/multiracial fans going 'finally some fucking representation' in this Medieval Europe But Worse simulator. There's a chance she has fans who mangle her to hell to make her more girlboss/don't realize why she has to go for patient manipulations over direct action given her station and status, thinking that her just shanking L*ttlefinger outright or openly ganking Joffrey to help her cousin is somehow superior to her plays at control. Also, 'we stan an evil Stark' and the evil is trying to hedge survival odds in the event -- that of course comes to pass -- that R0bb's rebellion goes belly up.

I mean, based on response of my followers, people love to see a weird girl winning. Baby Bolton is loved for being another bit of rep for the strange kids in the world, as well as doing her best in House Evil. Either she's regarded as highly adoptable/most wanted to be saved by fandom, or they think she needs to go a little apeshit, as a treat. Custom Toonami Block Week 118 Rundown

(I actually watched all these last week but didn’t get through typing up my thoughts on them until now so if I’m missing anything big that’s why)

Kaguya-sama: Love is War: It’s the last episode before the season finale and we’re kind of dorking around with the side characters. First Hayasaka teaches Kagura about twitter back in a world before it was the main platform of the US President and everyone had to be on it to find out if WWIII was happening. Next Chika briefly stars in a Food Wars episode out of nowhere. And last we have just kind of a short little thing about Kagura and Miyuki wanting to see each other during the summer and neither being able to get up the courage so they both go to school and just miss each other but it’s probably more weird that they even went on the same day at all nevertheless like an hour from each other. And we have a little epilogue about how shitty Kagura’s relationship with her dad is and how she has to call off her shopping trip with Chika and co so he can barely acknowledge her but she’s super excited for the fireworks finale next week so we’ll see how that goes.

Inuyasha: Inuyasha fights with Jakotsu as a human which basically amounts to him half-deflecting shit with Tessaiga’s sheathe and getting cut while Jakotsu goes on about how much he wants to buttfuck him with blood lube (I’m barely exaggerating). Meanwhile Miroku and Sango confront Saint Hakushin whose backstory is ‘man fuck people, people let me sacrifice everything for them and die’ which is honestly one of Naraku’s best played ‘Aren’t you tired of being nice? Don’t you just wanna go apeshit?’ ploys in the whole series because it works and buys him like a season and a half to reach his Final Form. But Miroku uses the Wind Tunnel which is fucking smart because Hakushin’s barrier means Naraku literally can’t send Saimyosho in here to stop him and it fucking brings the whole barrier shrine down around him, so yeah, point for Miroku’s Wind Tunnel, one of like two times in the series it actually got to be plot relevant. With the barrier gone Inuyasha becomes a demon again and is ready to fight Jakotsu for reals but gets trapped in the snake blade, hope that’s not a pointless cliffhanger.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Apparently Sakyo went to the Seto Kaiba school of “I lost so fuck this whole tournament” because he blows up the Dark Tournament arena. Like to be fair he gives everyone a good amount of time to escape but a bunch of background demons definitely died from this. Keiko’s still comatose from Yusuke being traumatized so Yusuke has to slap her awake and Keiko puts him down with one punch which I think technically makes Keiko the winner of the Dark Tournament. Sakyo’s all ‘yeah don’t worry my ‘demons in the real world’ plan will die with me unless there’s an oddly specific group that wants to do the exact same thing without me but what are the odds of that’ and Shizuru gets to cry about their… kind of weird filler relationship like I get it’s supposed to give her something to do and humanize Sakyo but they shared like two cigarettes and she’s super broken up over him idk. Anyway everyone gets out and Hiei gets a cute moment with Yukina everyone’s happy.

Fate/Apocrypha: Mordred’s super pissed that Sieg’s using his bullshit main character powers to fuck over power scaling like Shirou did which is fair, that’s always weird how the main character is like ‘I’ll beat you with the power of friendship and this sword I found’ to people 100x stronger than them and they still somehow win. Still, unfortunately Spartacus still exists and every frame he’s on screen creeps me right the fuck out so they have to fuck up his Dr. Tucker Chimera form until he explodes but Jeanne uses her NP to have him not kill anyone with the explosion so that’s cool. Also Semiramis is stealing the Bigger Cup which isn’t a cup at all it’s like a giant xenomorph egg thing and Vlad is like ‘Oh now they’re stealing the Bigger Cup’ and we basically move all the fights we were already having like ten feet away so they can happen in the castle but that fucks with Vlad’s impaling fetish because he can’t get it up in someone else’s territory so Karna’s gonna fuck him up.

Nisemonogatari: It’s finale time and Kiyomi’s gonna go fuck up the two new girls for the sake of his Phoenix!Sister which isn’t really a phoenix because this show loves going ‘it’s not this it’s actually this less common thing but we’ll call it this because branding’. We have a genuinely heartwarming moment where he goes to see Tsukihi and talks about loving her as a sister and how she’ll always be that no matter what which would hit a lot harder if he wasn’t trying to bone Karen two episodes ago or feeling up Tsukihi last episode. Anyway Shinobu decides to help out and gives him the succ so she can go to her… teenage form I guess? Like it’s not her full power form but she gets bigger so I guess if she’s a Pokemon this’d be her Charmeleon stage. They go and fight and Shinobu kicks the ass of the novel-talking girl while Kiyomi gets his ass kicked by martial arts girl. Still he’s doing his thing of talk no jutsuing her into submission and she lets slip that Kaiki was actually the one that told them about Tsukihi which I guess he figured out while he was scouting around town like with Suruga. She keeps saying that Kiyomi can believe what he wants about monsters but not to force that belief on her but like… that’s exactly what she’s doing like she’s trying to enforce her belief about integrated monsters being fakers down his throat and murder potentially multiple people about it, idk they don’t really address it. She brings up this pretty cool conversation with Kaiki she had where the discuss the difference between an original and a genuine indistinguishable counterfeit’s value which kind of serves at the thesis for this whole part of the series. Kaiki explains that something real exists the way it is effortlessly, but something fake has to expend effort to try and be something it’s not and it if succeeds in being indistinguishable that effort makes it far more valuable than the real thing that exists without that spent effort. This kind of goes back to Karen’s part too since the theme of fakery kinds runs through Nise and it’s pretty cool but the general idea is the effort put into something and the result it has is more important than the truth or falsehood of its original design. Basically this whole argument makes the girls pack up and go home, Kiyomi wins by Friendtality. Overall the themes of this part were pretty cool but it’s only like 20% themes and 80% underage sister fucking so yeah dunno where to place this one, might need a break from Monogatari after this…

Speed Grapher: Ginza grabs Kaguya and tells her that her mom is sick and they need to go home now and without Saiga around Kagura has no clue what the fuck to do because from her perspective her mom probably doesn’t know about the superpowered eyes wide shut cult Suitengu has her as the sexualized centerpiece of even though she’s definitely probably at least partially aware of it. Turns out Ginza faked the news report of Kagura’s mom’s sickness and it was a ridiculously simple way to solve the last ten episode arc so now Mrs. Tennozu can put Kagura back in a sensory deprivation chamber so they can keep milking superpowers out of her because if she hits puberty or the brain tumor gets her then they’re gonna make a lot of billionaires that want superpowers really mad. Suitengu has a lingerie model party where old dudes ride lingerie models like horses around a reading room and ends with a money shower where everyone’s pretending to fuck Kagura’s mom which isn’t super plot relevant but it’s too weird not to mention. They murder her financial adviser via some kind of… shark dude that just kinda eats him and Suitengu drives Mrs. Tennozu into the ocean and proposes to her while groping and fingerbanging her in the sinking car which how do you say no to that right ladies. It’s really kind of funny because she just walks back into work soaking wet and she’s the richest woman in the world so ain’t nobody gonna question why she has algae in her hair and a new fiancé. The Team Rocket group led by dog-dude whose name I still haven’t learned see the news of Mrs. Tennouzu’s engagement to Suitengu and are like ‘cool we’ll go hunt down Saiga again’ because they read that into Suitengu’s plan somehow which I don’t really get how Saiga has anything to do with this anymore but okay. Meanwhile Saiga is still unconscious and Ginza is just riding him like crazy while he’s fucking half dead, like idk why the Euphoric healing factor hasn’t gotten him back on his feet yet but she’s really going to town on him and meanwhile Kagura’s in the sensory deprivation tank getting felt up by a doctor and it’s almost a poetic moment that both our protagonists are simultaneously getting sexually assaulted while unconscious in the lowest moment of the plot. Like this is something of a tangent but Speed Grapher’s use of sexuality is kind of novel, like it’s an extraordinarily horny show but not in the way modern anime is horny like it all feels very seedy and it feels like it’s not ‘for you’ as a viewer like random shots zooming in on an anime girl’s jiggly bits that make up 75% of all anime now. A lot of the sexuality in Speed Grapher is kind of off-center so you definitely know what’s happening but the camera’s not holding on it for you to watch in some kind of voyeur way, like the horniness is just part of the worldbuilding since all these characters are godless heathens driven by money and emotionally damaged so they basically just go ‘might as well fuck’ and have no emotional attachment to it or use it in place of emotional attachment which creates this odd dissonance of something sexy for the characters creating some distance from the viewer which is kind of the opposite of modern fanservice. Like if modern fanservice is watching porn alone in your setting of choice, Speed Grapher is having porn on a living room tv while you’re walking by and just kind of washing in that awkward feeling.

Durararax2: Shizuo tracks down Kujiragi who is in the process of selling Celty and her head while they try to figure out how to transport a rampaging yandere mass of dullahan smoke. Varona is delivering the head and wants to shoot Shizuo but has to be ‘no, I wanna fair fight with the man that throws buildings around’ and the deal just kinda breaks down because everyone realizes they can’t just throw hands with Shizuo. Shizuo is cool with all Varona’s bullshit and is remarkably chill about the whole her wanting to kill him thing which is character development I guess. Izaya then takes a page out of Dio’s book and decides to just drop construction equipment on his enemies and drops a fucking crane on Shizuo, hurting Varona in the process but Shizuo fucking shoulder-checks the god damn crane falling from a building like what does it take to kill this guy I think cockroaches, twinkies and Shizuo Heiwajima are the only things gonna survive a nuclear apocalypse. Shizuo gets a call from Izaya and say goodbye to each other because everyone’s sure it’s time for Ikebukuro: Endgame.
