hey hey, in celebration of kingdom hearts’s anniversary, you should talk more about your version of birth by sleep with death note characters :D

Had to draw my favorite Birth By Sleep exchange.  Misa’s always seen as so young, and it annoys her.  She’s such a little sister~.  I honestly never thought about what their outfits would be, so I came up with something on the fly, though Light’s just in Terra’s as a placeholder.  It’s harder since they’re supposed to look like an older more traditional fashion (though Ventus still seems to wear whatever the heck he wants, just with a muted color palette~).  Oh, and sidenote, everything is completely platonic.  I actually don’t ship anything in the Kingdom Hearts series.  I support all the ships that exist though, canon and not~.  ^__^  I do intend to draw more scenes with these three in these roles when I have time.  Maybe I should draw more actual KH fanart.  *snort*

Ha~!  I honestly don’t know what else to say about it aside from what I’ve already said in this post [link].  All I can really say is that I didn’t mean to do it~.  I really try to accept things the way they are, but as I kept coming back to BBS’s story, the Death Note part of my brain did its thing.  *shrug*  I still love Aqua, Terra, and Ven just as much on their own, though.  ^__^

I just love this family dynamic between Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, and seeing it with Light, L, and Misa is freakin’ adorable.  And their story is tragic, perfect for Death Note characters who just want happiness and fulfillment, but are firmly denied it and are sent through hell just to reach a better conclusion.  The BBS trio are put though so much.  *cries*

L being sent to keep an eye on Light, who seems to have strayed onto a dangerous path, fits.  Light being confused and upset that he’s mistrusted fits with his memoryless Yotsuba Arc self; friendlier but no less focused.  Misa wanting to be more included but keeps getting left behind fits.  Her being spiritually cleaved in half works due to her life span getting added to and chopped up, starting out involuntary, but then willingly sacrificing herself (though in Death Note, it’s done selfishly while Ventus does it to protect everyone; chalk it up to her darkness still being firmly in place~).

The story’s basically the same, aside from my selfish recasts.  They’re the only three I’ve recast and Vanitas is re-gendered to be female while still looking like Dark!Sora (though I think Xion does this, too, so it’s not that farfetched).  It’s all an excuse to see the Death Note trio in sweet situations (going to Disney Town and winning custom ice cream and being disappointed the other two aren’t there, treasuring the wayfinders L made for all of them), kick lots of ass, be emotionally and physically tortured as far as a kids game can go (heart cleaved and put to sleep and having to watch everything Sora goes through [good and bad], manipulated and bodysnatched, being forced to wander a dark monster-infested world for 10 years and slowly succumbing while your guilt and longing torment you) and finally earn an amazing reunion ending where they cry in each others’ arms because they never stopped thinking of each other that whole time~.

Also, I can really see the main cast of Death Note being keyblade wielders (they all have strong hearts and stand by their beliefs and goals, regardless of what that entails).  One day, I want to draw each with their own unique keyblades and Dive to the Heart stained glass pillars, but in the context of Death Note’s canon story.  *looks them up*  Apparently they’re called “Stations?”  That’s an ambitious goal for the future.

Henh, this isn’t nearly as in depth as you probably wanted.  It’s more like a wordy mess I spewed with a doodle~.  :P  But thanks for the ask and showing interest~.  :D

Let me put it this way: Matt may have been the reason the Holy Grail grew so exponentially, but she’d still managed to recruit a good amount of members before she had him and there’s a reason for that.

Why Someone Might Love Them: Once they honestly get to know her if they do they’re probably too wrapped up in her beliefs to stand against her. It’s the only reason somebody could like her. She’s manipulative, abusive, and kinda a bitch.

Also I guess there’s kinda the people who don’t know she’s a cult leader who know her online like Luca, ig he likes her because when she’s not trying to recruit people to a cult she’s not a complete monster.

Why Someone Might Hate Them: See the above.

How They Change: Her character arc is definitely a fall from grace. She starts off as a young and aspiring comic artist who moves to Shibuya for a chance, has some bad luck, and just when all seems shit, she winds up in Yaldaboath’s distorted world but unlike everybody else there, she can see him right away. And the words he says make sense. Shibuya is rotten to the core. People don’t need free will, they’d be happier without it. When he dies, she resolves to bringing him back to awareness in the human subconscious so he can rise again and control Shibuya from below with her as his enforcer and the one spreading his word, and bit by bit she starts losing every aspect of herself until all that’s left of Celeste is a dedicated follower of Yaldabaoth and leader of a cult.

Why You Love Them: She’s an interesting character study for sure and her fall from naïve, struggling comic and fanartist to cult leader who’s entire identity and life’s goals are based around bringing back a false god who wants to take away all individuality and control the world and that’s interesting as hell. She’s interesting as hell.

Talents and/or Powers: As a Keyblade Wielder Annalee has the standard array of ability to use Keyblade and everything that comes with it.

Because she is an Unversed given human form (tl:dr Vanitas experiences a happy emotion and creates an Unversed that’s powerful enough to maintain a human form when she so chooses, and she does often) she also has standard array of his powers. She can create or summon Unversed and have them help her in combat. If they or she get too hurt, she can no longer sustain them and they vanish instead to sustain her. (Her favorite is her Archraven)

Why Someone Might Love Them: Well first of all she’s honestly adorable in her naivety, and she tries incredibly hard to be liked. Her heart is always in the right place even despite the darkness that makes her up and she’s kind. Insanely kind.

Why Someone Might Hate Them: Well for one Vanitas is like her pseudo-father so anybody with a grudge against him...there’s also the fact that if she loses control or gets too much darkness exposure she’ll turn into her true Unversed form and go on a rampage. And also her social anxiety does make her panic often or say the wrong thing.

How They Change: In character, she becomes more confident, self assured, and better at controlling her darkness to the point that all transformations are at will.

But honestly tracking her ooc changes is more fun because full confession, she was originally a Vanqua love child I had no choice but to back off of because of some things in the rp I first used her in and I liked the second version so much I decided to keep it.

Why You Love Them: She’s one of my oldest ocs, and I’m very proud of how far she’s come as a character. Also I’m not gonna lie I may look at some of the Unversed stuff and go “wow other KH fans will probably find that cringey” but I’m having fun with all of it and I think above all else that’s what matters.

I wanna do something a little fun and just share some of the KH fanfic ideas I’ve had for a while, which are mostly about Vanitas because of course they are. XD But yeah, here are my ideas:

1. A Shadow of Two - a sequel to A Heart and a Half, kinda a fix-it for KH3 but not really since it’s an AU to begin with. Vanitas Aqua and Ventus would be the main trio, but Sora Riku and Kairi are also POV characters, with each of them having their own trio and goals: Sora (with Donald and Goofy) looking for a way to revive Roxas while struggling with his own inner darkness, Kairi training with Axel and getting help from Ienzo in discovering her past, Riku Mickey and an unrevealed character on a secret Realm of Darkness mission and also finding a way to revive Naminé, and Vanitas Aqua and Ventus searching for the new Princesses of Heart while dealing with their own problems: Vanitas still dealing with his trauma while adjusting to normal society, Aqua dealing with something I can’t reveal yet, and Ventus... honestly I don’t know what to do with Ventus. The most obvious answer would be recovering his lost memories, but... well, introducing an egregiously convoluted backstory wherein Ventus and/or Vanitas might be a murderer isn’t exactly appealing to me, to say the least. I really wish Ven’s backstory could’ve been something I was allowed to make up myself. Other than that, the story would generally follow KH3 but with way more Disney worlds and hopefully fewer plot holes. ;P

2. Broken Hearts (Take Time to Mend) - a post-KH3 fic that ignores Re:Mind and the time-traveling Vanitas retcon. This fic is about the REAL Vanitas who was in KH3 and resurrected via scream energy who has returned once again, this time in the Land of Departure but is too weak to leave and is quickly discovered by the Wayfinder Trio. Tensions are high but he’s ultimately allowed to stay, with the focus of the story being on the four of them helping each other recover from their respective traumas: Vanitas’s years of abuse by Xehanort, Terra’s decade of possession by Xehanort (which according to the post-Re:Mind character files was a lot more traumatic than I’d realized), Aqua’s decade spent in the Realm of Darkness and subsequent corruption by darkness, and Ven’s... almost being killed by Eraqus, I guess. While pretty bad, that’s probably not as traumatizing as years of torture and torment, and the more obvious trauma to use would be Ventus committing/witnessing Strelitzia’s murder, but as I’ve established I just really don’t want to deal with KHUX at all. Anyway, this could work as a gen fic but since I love Vanqua so much I might as well make it one, maybe throw a little Terrella in there too 'cause why not.

3. This fic idea focuses on the aftermath of KH3, NOT Re:Mind, where Riku Kairi and Naminé are trying to adjust back to a normal life at Destiny Islands while also dealing with their grief over Sora’s disappearance. Kairi deals with blaming herself for Sora’s ‘death’, Naminé deals with being adopted as Kairi’s sister and learning how to be a normal person, and Riku deals with his growing feelings for Naminé, but the real star of the show is... Sora’s mom! Oh and Vanitas too, of course. Sora’s mom (who really needs a name) has finally been told about everything that’s happened these past two-ish years, and a month after Sora’s disappearance she finds a comatose Vanitas washed up on the beach. She assumes it’s Sora, although Riku and Kairi are quick to correct her. Despite their warnings, Sora’s mom nurses Vanitas back to health and basically adopts him, although he isn’t exactly happy with the situation. Still weak and recovering, Vanitas is unable to leave, and Sora’s mom won’t stop in her efforts to help him adjust to a normal life. This one could be merged into Broken Hearts, since I could imagine Riku informing the Wayfinder Trio about Vanitas’s return and an angry and distrustful post-KH3 Aqua wouldn’t want to let him out of her sight, but it might be better to keep them as separate fics seeing as they’re set in two different locations.

4. My next idea hinges on my theory of what the next KH game could’ve been like... or at least before Re:Mind pretty much shot it down. My theory was that Vanitas, the real Vanitas not the time-traveler, was still inside Sora’s heart and therefore went along with him to TWEWY. I haven’t played TWEWY but I know that Sora would need a partner to defeat the Noise, and what better partner than a former enemy? This would be similar to A Heart and a Half but instead of romance it’s a sibling team-up with them trying to escape Shibuya. This fic could also be combined with the previous idea as well... Maybe Sora allows Vanitas to win the Reaper’s Game and he ends up on Destiny Islands unable to remember what happened in TWEWY. Vanitas would be the key to getting Sora back but only if Naminé can unlock his lost memories. My only problem is that I would have to erase all that character development Vanitas gained with Sora to reset him back to have character development with the Destiny Islands characters instead, at least until he regains all his memories.

5. A different Vanitas and Sora team-up fic. Once again this is the real Vanitas who used scream energy to revive himself, but that made his heart rather unstable. He tries to fight Sora Donald and Goofy in Monstropolis but is too weak and sick and loses. Upon discovering that Vanitas looks just like him, Sora decides to take him back to Yen Sid for healing and answers. But Vanitas’s negativity is too much for the Gummiship to handle and it ends up stalling. Sora Donald and Goofy slowly nurse a very reluctant Vanitas back to health with the power of friendship, which would reduce the amount of negativity so the Gummiship can fly again. Vanitas and the trio travel to a few different Disney worlds and eventually rescue Aqua and Ven. I don’t know what would happen after that though, since I don’t want to just rehash exactly what happened in the Keyblade Graveyard.

6. A pre-BBS Vanqua AU. Only a few months after being created, Vanitas runs away from Xehanort to the Land of Departure, hoping to merge with Ven early. Unfortunately for him Ven is still in a coma, so Vanitas tries to merge with Aqua instead. This doesn’t quite work, but does end up linking their hearts in such a way that neither can go too far away from each other without feeling sick or even dying. Now stuck at the Land of departure, Vanitas is found by Xehanort who is enraged that Vanitas has basically ruined all his plans. Fearing for his life, Vanitas convinces Xehanort that the plan can still be salvaged: Vanitas will become Eraqus’s apprentice under the guise of Ven’s ‘brother’ and is tasked with encouraging Terra’s darkness while making sure Ventus and/or Aqua are trained to their fullest, depending on which one would be better to merge with. Xehanort, not wanting to start this entire endeavor over, agrees to the plan and introduces Vanitas to Eraqus and the others. Since Vanitas is now wearing normal clothing, Aqua has no idea that he is the masked boy who attacked her earlier, but feels strangely drawn to him due to their connected hearts. The rest of the fic would basically be about the four apprentices’ life at the Land of Departure, with Vanitas struggling with his loyalty to Xehanort vs his slowly burgeoning friendship with Terra Ven and Aqua, all while trying not to blow his cover with the Unversed.

I also have a few smaller ideas that I haven’t really thought through yet or might work better as oneshots or fanart: 1. A Lion King Vanqua AU with lion Aqua and black leopard Vanitas, Terra Eraqus and Xehanort also as lions, Ven as a regular leopard, and Braig as a hyena. 2. A KH1 retelling/reimagining with Vanitas reincarnated as Sora’s younger brother. 3. A Nier Automata AU with resistance android Terra, scanner Ventus, attacker Aqua, and Vanitas as a scanner with executioner chips installed by Xehanort sent to infiltrate Yorha. 4. A post-KH3 fic dealing with Sora’s restlessness after attempting to return to a normal life on Destiny Islands, feeling like he doesn’t belong after everything he’s been through. 5. Something about Aqua taking care of Ven when he first arrives at the Land of Departure, possibly Venqua. 6. A Vanqua-ish KH3 fic with Vanitas kidnapping Aqua to be used as a Guardian or Seeker back-up for Org13, but he eventually befriends her and lets her go. 7. And finally, a Namiku fic set between CoM and KH2. I kinda feel like this should be part of the A Heart and a Half ‘canon’, but I’m not actually sure whether it should be its own fic or just flashback scenes in A Shadow of Two.

You’ll notice that I really love stories about villain redemption, abuse/mental illness recovery, and former enemies becoming friends/lovers, which is why I’ve grown so disappointed with mainstream works nowadays rarely exploring those topics (at least not that I’ve seen). I guess that’s where that old saying comes in, “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself”. But yeah, that’s just a quick list of my KH fic ideas so far!

Hnnng... Some Self Indulgent Vanitas drabble.

I'll probably go over it later and add some more actual story , but I needed to get out the main idea~ (I wanted to add Roxas to this too, so consider this a rough draft lmao)

It's barely been a full day since their return, but his suit was already chafing. Vanitas huffed as he discreetly scratched under his tricep where the dark material seemed to be mercilessly pinching him. He'd be loath to admit it aloud, but he really wanted out of the confine of these damned garments.

But there was just three things holding him back from stripping into the nude.

 For one, unfamiliar territory. Dragged to Density Islands into the Hero of Light's home, where he was almost assaulted with what Sora claims was a hug by his mother. 

Two, Ven and Sora were probably trying to pick out what he was going to wear right now, and that's punishment in itself.

 And then, there was his skin. He wasn't ready to see it.

A replica body, they gave him. It was to reflect the heart inhabiting it, and with all the baggage that came with it. At least he assumed so.

Xion assured him that the body will be what it's supposed to, her smile was so genuine and something in her eyes sparkled as she tugged at the hem of her skirt. He wasn't sure what to make of that.

He huffed in frustration, silently dreading the moment to come, but also willing it to come faster. Wanting to be rid of the fabric he was born in… the one that man-

"Here you go Vani!" Sora's bright, cheerful voice eliminating whatever dark thoughts were to cross his mind. "We decided to grab on of Riku's shirts for you. Funnily enough, you're bigger than both Ven and I! So our clothes might be a bit tight on you. But I still brought a pair of pants I never wear, I hope that's ok!"

"And, we'll go shopping for clothes of your own, once we get you settled in." Ventus added timidly. He's still a little wary around his darker half, but he's making an effort.

Taking the clothes from Sora's hands, grumbling what could be mistaken as a 'thank you,' and headed to the restroom where a hot bath had been drawn, by his mother no doubt. 

His senses are stimulated by steam humidifying the small room, the relaxing scent of whatever oils were used, and the warm light of the fixture on the ceiling. 

Placing the borrowed clothing on the counter, he looked up. And for the first time he can recall in recent memory, he saw his own reflection. He didn't appear as bad as he felt. Which was only a bit surprising. 

He was good at fooling everyone, even himself, into thinking that he was perfectly fine on the surface, when underneath was screaming and burning. 

Biting the inside of his cheek, he leaned in closer to the mirror to investigate himself. He had hardly believed his brothers when they said his eyes were the shade of rubies. 

Yet, there they were, staring back at him. He'd rather call it 'Unversed Red' since now he matched his inner demon's aesthetics. 

His stare scanned the edges of his hairline, the bridge of his nose, chapping lips, along his jaw and landed on the edges where suit met skin. 

"Now or never…" tugging his fingers along the crease, he began pulling it away from his neck. It fell apart, coming undone in a sickening unnatural way. Black threads snapping and slipping away, fading into hairline wisps of smoke. 

He turned away from the mirror and made headway for the tub, the suit taking its own initiative into dispersing. Until down to his waist. 

Kneeling down, he reached into the water to feel the temperature with his now bare hand only to immediately pull it back, his heart in his throat as he stares dumbfounded at his own appendage. 

Clear. Unmarked. Smooth, clean skin. 

His entire arm tenses and his fingers shake as he brings his other hand to trace up from his knuckles, wrists, forearm- he glanced down at his chest. 

Nothing. There wasn't a single, ugly, carved scar in sight. Not even the first one, from the day he was ripped from his light. 

He covered his mouth as a sob threatened to hiccup from his throat. But that didn't stop the tears he had been trying to hold onto all day. 

They poured freely from his eyes, his cries seeping out, unable to hold them back.

 He didn't notice the door opening and closing, and the two bodies that had joined him on the floor until one touched his shoulder. Sora gave a knowing and gentle look, and from the corner of his eye, Ventus holding a small Flood that undoubtedly formed and alerted them.

They didn't say a word. Only sat in silence, in an odd comforting kind of way, until Vanitas was able to find his voice.

"They're gone… all of them. Every mark He ever left on me, every nick, and cut. Every slice and stab from His damned keyblade…" hiccups and hard breathing breaking up his words.

"He… He's gone… He doesn't have me anymore… no longer controls me… I'm… I'm free." 

Unable to hold himself up, he keels over and grips the side of the basin while releasing everything his uncompleted heart held onto for all those years. Years of abuse, torment, slavery, lies and broken promises. 

The constant coldness encapsulating him melting away, feeling the warmth he yearned for every night on the frigid grounds of the graveyard.

His hands grip harder, finding fabric instead of ceramic. Arms held firmly, but gently around him. Holding him close. He can hear a familiar heart beat against his ear. 

Breathing coming to a calm, he glances to see Ventus. His light, his other half, his brother, gently gazing down at him. A reassuring smile as a hand gently caresses the strands of hair at his nape. 

Sora tending the frazzled Flood in turn, and rubbing small circles on its back. A welcome comfort, albeit indirectly, but Vanitas felt it all the same.

His eyes shut briefly and the next hour or so is hazy. He recalls enjoying his bath, but was too tired to recollect everything that had transpired after crying himself empty. 

A shirt that swallowed him. Conversations that he won't remember until the morning, a goodnight kiss on his head from someone he might as well start calling mother. 

Being dragged onto a pile of blankets and pillows in a blanket fort haphazardly thrown together in an impromptu "slumber party,"  Sora's words.

He chuckles quietly as his two brothers debate over who should sleep in the middle, while he decides to just plop himself between the two, grumbling at them to just go to sleep.

They finally settled in, a large comforter spread across the three of them. Chatting and bickering in hushed voices, "sleepover etiquette," Ven's words. 

While he won't really remember what they talked about that night, he'll remember that feeling swelling in his chest as sleep took him over. 

The remnants of his consciousness just barely catching the gestures of two arms draping over him, and even quieter voices. One of many genuine smiles to come graced his features. 

"Goodnight, Vanitas."

So, because I’m terrible at picking favorites I’ve decided to limit myself to manga and/or cartoon characters. And so, in no particular order:

Noé Archiviste (Vanitas no Carte)

What’s not to like? He’s kind, inquisitive, and balances Vanitas out splendidly. He’s also terribly interesting; what are the details of his backstory? How will he change over the course of the series? But aside from that he also asks all the questions I want to ask. :D

Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Pretty much always a given for me on these kinds of lists. I related to him a lot when I was younger; he’s an inspiring character that keeps on going despite how bad things get.

Raven (Teen Titans)

Another given. I was completely obsessed with this character and I still think she’s awesome. Powerful, mysterious, and cares more than she let’s on. She’s just the best. I also loved her episodes; controlling emotions, mastering oneself, tackling your fears... Powerful stuff.

Bart Allen/Impulse (Young Justice)

This show is on my mind a lot lately since the third season is airing and while I have some qualms with how things are going I still think this portrayal of Bart was great. He set out to change history, did a good job of it, and befriended the guy that tormented him in his past. What’s not to admire there?

Asakura Hao (Shaman King)

Another character I was completely obsessed with as a kid. I just found his background and his motivations fascinating. He was so clearly in the wrong but he truly believed he was right and that he would bring peace to the world.

Ichihara Yuuko  & Watanuki Kimihiro (xxxHolic)

Putting two for one is cheating but oh well. 8D 

I loved how wise Yuuko was and how she always helped people, though not necessarily in any way you’d expect. I admire the way she understood so many things and fought for balance. As for Watanuki it was the changes he underwent that spoke to me a great deal. Ultimately, he couldn’t move on, which was the one thing Yuuko knew everyone had to do. It’s honestly their relationship I found so interesting.

Aang (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

There are so many people I want to choose from this series but for now I’ll simply go with Aang. I love how he tries to pursue the monks’ philosophies and how he brings peace and balance to the world. 

Daidouji Tomoyo (Cardcaptor Sakura)

She’s probably the wisest kid in the universe and the most accepting of unrequited love. She also has excellent style.

Sumeragi Subaru (Tokyo Babylon & X/1999)

CLAMP did you wrong Subaru but you were a kind, terribly considerate person, who deserved so much better.

L (Death Note)

The fandom often portrays him as a lot nicer than he actually is but as far as the series is concerned he was fighting for the side of good and he was justice even if he meted it out with several ... questionable tactics.

Ahsoka Tano (Star Wars: The Clone Wars & Rebels)

Okay, I’ve already gone over the limit but she’s just an awesome character. Fiesty, wise, and strong. She’s what Anakin could have been if he wasn’t, you know, Darth Vader. If you haven’t seen her before you’ve got to take a look!

Ahh, it’s so hard to stop at just ten. XD Also, CLAMP has taken over this list. I guess I can’t say I’m surprised; they were a big influence on me.

it's so funny to me that Braig/Xigbar purposely antagonising Ven/Roxas/Xion/Sora is specifically rooted in Ven being made the fifth Dandelion leader instead of Strelitzia and Luxu's reports on the matter making his grievances with that clear

he really made it his immortal life's mission to specifically ruin that kid's life and every other kid that looks like him
