Aeon fic rec pt. 2

As this fic rec was getting a little old (four years ago already!) and too many of the fics on it had been deleted, I figured it was time for a remake. Please enjoy this new list of my favorite aeon fanfictions!

to our phantoms yet to come (teatin). Teatin is a pillar in the aeon fanfic writer community, and this is her latest creation. It follows Leon in the aftermath of RE4R, and his struggle to rebuild his trust in Ada. Poetic, angsty, sexy... it's got it all, and I consider this work canon until proved otherwise!

there be dragons (lordbhreanna). A four chaptered exploration of a 'what if?' RE2R scenario. What if... Ada was never shot by Annette and escaped Raccoon City with Leon, Claire and Sherry? So in-character you'll cry for more.

Homesick (eya_silvers, A.K.A me). Set after RE6, this fic explores a scenario in which Ada moves in with Leon. Settle down for domestic fluff, Leon being stubborn and blind and Ada being stubborn and elusive, as well as some angsty and sexy times, and you've got yourself a nice long novel to read during your insomniac night.

let's see how deep the bullet lies (chaotic3vil). Short but angst-full, it'll have you cry if you decide to act the scene out like I did. Can be summed up in one simple prompt: "What would it take for Ada Wong to break?"

Fallen Angel (romanticprism). Ada finds an orphan child in the middle of the warzone and decides to give her the life she deserves... with the help of the only man she trusts. This is the aeon as parents fic you've dreamed of.

Locked and Loaded (nuricurry). The three S: Sad, Suicidal, and Sexy. Or: Ada likes to point her gun but she can never really pull the trigger.

It's Cold Outside But I'm Burning (blaircow). Four walls, two people, one conversation. Let's all harass the author for more chapters because damn this is good!

Just Me and You (AzuraJae). Another aeon parents fic!! After the events of RE6 and Vendetta, Ada drops a baby on Leon's doorstep... is he ready to be a dad? And does she have what it takes to be a mom?

all the roads we didn't walk (teatin). I adore this one so much. Basically six fics in one, it's taking the concept of multiverse and applying it to aeon in heart-breaking and tooth-rotting ways. If you don't want to cry, don't read it. If you do, oooh boy!

scales and measures (whatsarasays). One step forward, two steps back with aeon. They don't trust each other, yet they do, they can't love each other, yet they want to... this fic is a whirlwind of emotions and opposing feelings.

Carmen (eya_silvers). Following a battle against a bioterrorist, Ada and Leon get infected and... swap bodies. They now have to find a way to get back to themselves, as well as navigate the issues of their relationship and end a potential biohazard war. Sometimes, all it takes is a little bit of push from the universe to be able to see yourself in the other's eye...

Of Things Unseen (jcavero). After Spain, Leon and Ashley have to get back to their own life, but the losses are great and traumas are deep. Slowly, they both push each other to the path of healing. Perhaps Leon can have closure with Ada too. All the relationships in this fic are so great and I absolutely adore introspective fics.

“Ada shouldn’t have treated Leon that way! I hate her!”

Listen. I love Leon so so so so so so much, but I think Ada was in her right to be mean and manipulative because he was a fucking cop! Doesn’t matter how nice and sweet and naive people think he is in RE2. Leon chose to become a cop. The structural system of law enforcement is corrupt in it’s function. If there was no outbreak in RC, Leon still managed to join one of the most corrupt police departments by accident. Even if he didn’t directly participate in the messed up shit happening with or without Umbrella, he’d either become complicit in the bullshit his cop friends were doing and let it happen, or he’d quit. Because there are no good cops! All of the good cops you hear stories of quit since they realized the system they were trying to challenge and make better wasn’t a task they could take on alone, and they were very much alone in their attempts while employed as cops.

Brad Vickers is the best example that the corruption in RPD was way to deep to handle considering he had to keep his head down and look away in order to even keep his job. Everyone else? Barry went into hiding. Chris left the country under the guise of a vacation to do further investigation. Jill got fucking suspended! There would be no amount of fixing Leon could feasibly do without immediate consequence and danger to his person, so he’d either quit, or become another shitty cop.

“But-, but- what about in RE4 when Ada’s not nice to him? :( He didn’t want to join US STRATCOM.”

I think Ada was absolutely within her full rights to be mean and manipulative to Leon, because he was a part of a very illegal secret government task force.

Also, I don’t know where this desire to baby Leon comes from post-raccoon city. I don’t mean emotionally, but I mean with his capabilities. Leon was trained to deal with this shit. Ada trusts him and his capabilities to remain mostly hands off. Leon trusts Ada and her capabilities to not go after her. He doesn’t even report her presence to Hunnigan, because he’s a big boy who knows the government will shift or split his priorities from saving Ashley to detaining/apprehending Ada even if that’s not what the president wants.

I don’t give a shit how much you dislike Ada, but stop saying you dislike her for Leon’s sake since that’s so disrespectful to him. He’s not an idiot. He’s not a baby. He may not always know what he’s getting into with Ada, but he does trust her to an extent. She trusts him to that same extent. It’s a strong mutual respect built on that trust even when they don’t see eye to eye on things. That’s why their dynamic is so interesting to explore in the first place. To be honest, I’m just happy the remakes seem to be putting Ada in the hands of more competent writers who aren’t flip flopping about how she should function in the narrative.

Like, honestly, the blandest hate takes on Ada in this tag always have me saying “god forbid women do anything!”

I think people tend to ignore Leon fucking up (like with Shen May), because they have the mindset of "oh no, that's my favourite character! So he can't do anything wrong or have any flaws!" It's such a limiting way to think. I mean, I really like Leon too, but I'll openly say that he often gives me the fucking ick, lmao. The Shen May scene had me recoiling. Man's a stereotype of "that creepy guy at the bar" and he exudes that a LOT. I'm glad he was turned down. Even the characters we love need to be humbled when they're full of shit, because it's realistic and interesting. It's okay to think outside of the caveman "he good! no bad!"

Also, tacking on, because despite it being a different topic, I may as well stick to a singular ask. Jilleon is such a weird concept to me, lmao. I think for the most part it's treated pretty lightheartedly, but I'm confused because I couldn't really identify where it came from, other than that they're both attractive. I love Jill, but I don't see her reciprocating any attraction. Like, remotely. They get along fine, but I can't even see a close friendship. Maybe I'm biased though, cause I love her and as much as I enjoy Leon, dear god above he doesn't need another love interest. Also Capcom please just grow your balls and properly address Valenfield. We all know they're either a couple or have been pining for several decades.

I'm not gonna lie, if OG Leon asked me out, I'd have told him I had a boyfriend, too. Or maybe just even told him I wasn't interested in men all together. His approach is so... old-fashioned in a bad way. It's evidence that his development was arrested in 1998; he hasn't matured past that point, so he thinks that it's still a thing to just go up to a cute girl and ask for her number right after getting her name.

So like. I'm not surprised that it's pretty much exclusively early 20s and younger ppl who don't think he's trying to ask her on an actual date, because no one does that shit anymore. That was already out of fashion by the time I was in high school, even, and I entered high school in 2003.

But for any tiny childrens who are reading this: yes this is literally how relationships would start in the 80s and 90s. Out of nowhere and on a whim between complete strangers and just hoping it works.

Prior to Death Island, I would have agreed with you. 100% I didn't understand what the basis for it was, and I didn't think she'd be interested in him at all.

Then I watched Death Island. And I'm 85% sure that they've already slept together LMAO Chris dropped the ball between RE5 and DI, and Leon just kind of slid in there and took his shot and actually seems to have made it???

If I'm not mistaken, Jill is the only person other than Remake Ashley in the entire series who actually laughs at Leon's jokes. And she actually gets him to laugh out loud in return -- which is almost unheard of for him.

They just seem very comfortable around each other in general. Jill seems more at ease in his presence than she's been in Chris's since... Lost in Nightmares? And Leon is definitely more comfortable being with her than he is being with Ada or Claire. Like, Jill seems as comfy as a presence for Leon as Chris and Ashley are.

I just really like their dynamic in general. I don't think of them as romantic, but I see them as very, very good friends who just fuck every once in a while.

Like, Chris is still Leon's best friend, but their relationship is a lot more intense. But Jill is the person that Leon first thinks to call when he needs to nerd out about movies or to just bullshit in general. And then every so often, a text message conversation happens like:

"Gonna be in DC for a weekend for BSAA shit. Pick me up from the airport?"

"Sure. What hotel?"

"Staying with a friend actually idk if you know him. Leon Kennedy? In the DSO. Brown hair, blue eyes, giant cock?"

"Never heard of him. Sounds like he's in for a fun weekend though."

i am thinking about the possibility of writing of re6 because i am utterly bored. one of the driving points of leon's campaign is he doesn't really care what happens to him. he wants to help ada so desperately that he is willing to risk people' lives. that's the driving point. aeon. but that's not the whole point.

now, my question around re6. i believe re6 remake should start the same. leon killing the president and forced to work with helena. but i feel the people of the bus and the church should saved a bit better. have leon feel guilty in leading them in another dangerous thing. have leon be kind like he was with ashley in re4 remake. helena, though a bit colder, because her sister is in mind. when leon sees the tape of the clone of ada, leon immediately thinks the worst of ada. remake leon does have hope in ada, but i don't think he super cares of ada. he knows she does help (rocket and the jet ski in re4), but he can't fully trust ada.

i feel the game should've tricked us better with clone ada. i doubt this because the story won't move harshly from the og story. but have carla and leon interact. and then ada and leon. i feel this line would've made more sense. when leon defends the fake ada from chris, it's not fully about the idea of love. it's the idea of "chris, it's hard to explain, but she's a clone." ( or this stupid idea. leon is tricked by carla and thinks he is in love with ada but it's actually carla.)

that's the echo of the story. leon rejects ada in re4 remake, and ada will reject leon in re6.

god, i'm really hating the writing of re6 right now because it's messy. fuck, it just complicated. i thought i was gonna have all the answers on how i'll attempt to rewrite the story, but fuck. leon's campaign needs aeon to work, but in the way remake looks. they are retconning it certain details. either ada will completely be a shadow in re6 and barely appear til her own campaign or destroy everything the new writers attempted.

it's just.... not all the campaigns (chris, jake, and ada's) need a full rewrite. all it is a polish to make shine. however, it's leon's who needs to be thought over. either makes simmons a better villain for leon without the involvement of ada or... what else? like its probably me making it more difficult, but fuck...

VAMPIRE HUNTER AU 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🛐🛐🛐

YES THANK YOU okay ill give you a messy summary. So in my vampire au, LEON is the vampire bc there's no way in hell Luis's catholic ass would ever live w himself as a vampire lol (before Leon at least). plus it adds angst if Luis was a vampire hunter in the past before hunting vampires was outlawed. Luis helped make a virus that only targeted vampires and caused thousands of them to become Undead and be especially susceptible to elements/die easily. Leon's life was upended by this and while he didn't die, he lost other vampire friends (Marvin, his entire coven, etc), lost custody of his daughter Sherry, lost contact with Claire, etc. More angst. Luis and Leon fall in love and get into that codependency state where Luis is BEGGING Leon to bite him and make him immortal too so they can live together forever, but Leon doesn't want to doom Luis to eternity (Leon has been alive for centuries and he's had to watch people he loves die including his parents, he was turned into a vampire against his will [vampire coven killed his parents and turned him] so he doesn't want that fate for anyone) so there's a misunderstanding where Luis just thinks Leon doesn't actually want him in his life forever and that's why he refuses to turn Luis. Leon being like "I'm worried you'll regret it and I'll lose you" and Luis being like "I am ready to commit my life to you, so if you're not going to do the same for me then you'll lose me much sooner". He just asks Leon to promise that SOMEDAY he'll turn Luis but Leon can't even promise that so Luis leaves. He can't stay away forever and when he returns (probably only like. Less than 2 months later at most lol this isn't my breakup fic) Leon is more than willing to turn him finally because he just cannot be without Luis. The lifetime of a human is a blink of the eye for Leon's lifetime, a few months means nothing to someone who has lived hundreds of years; and yet, going even those several weeks without Luis was the most devastating and unbearable amount of time Leon has ever faced in his life. He never knew what his life was missing until they met and now he can't have a life without Luis, he just can't do it. He was so caught up in playing the good guy for Luis, refusing to bite him and doom him to immortality, but also so aware that he cannot exist without Luis, he was going to die right alongside Luis's mortal body, he would've followed Luis to death. And Luis is like you fucking idiot dumbass bitch I WANT TO BE IMMORTAL WITH YOU. So eventually Leon bites him and they live together happily forever. Ashley is Leon's adopted sister, he found her after a nasty vampire coven turned her and left her for dead and he took her in. Ada isn't a vampire initially cause she's perfectly satisfied with her mortal life, but she does get bit later and has to come to terms with that, but hey at least the family stays together. Oh and I'm using D&D rules so Leon isn't a full vampire he's a vampire spawn, so he can't turn anyone else into a vampire he can just make drudges so that's what Luis (consensually) becomes.

Theme, character, and a few more thoughts on the RE4 Remake

So, having played the Resident Evil 4 remake, I had a ton of fun – but in the end, I think it worked better for me when they remade this game as Resident Evil Village instead.

As every gaming outlet on the net has already told you, there’s a lot to recommend this title. The gameplay is terrific, new!Leon is still stupidly endearing to me, and there are so many little details in his character animation that I love to bits (seriously, he and Ashley actually managed to make me feel guilty about making them run back through the pouring rain hunting that one treasure on the map I’d missed – it’s that good).

But story-wise, I can only wish they’d had the guts to remake this thing a little harder. And while I have sunk a truly stupid number of hours into getting every achievement in RE8, RE4 seems to have tailored its own post-game ecosystem specifically to turn me away. And that's just a little disappointing.

The full RE4 experience is roughly twice as long as Village, but it feels like it has about half the actual plot. Most of what happens once you leave the village area feels like padding, the game spinning its wheels to fill in time. The lore makes less sense the more I try to get my head around it. Parts like Ada’s role feel so unfinished I can only hope there’s more coming in DLC. And despite token attempts to link events thematically to RE2, the result probably works better if you haven’t actually played the RE2 remake lately.

And while you can always say, “C’mon, it’s RE4! No-one remembers that game for the plot!” I’m left going, well, sure, but they remade Leon’s story in RE2 so well! And everything that left me wanting here was stuff they did just as well in RE8 – which was already basically a stealth remake of RE4. Was it so unreasonable to hope they could pull off the same here?

But enough hand waving. Let’s talk specifics. I’ve already talked Luis. So it’s time to talk Leon and Ashley.

I have so many mixed feelings about RE4-remake!Leon. So many.

In so many ways, he just works. He’s not the same Leon of RE2, but he’s changed in ways that make sense given several years of special ops training. He's taken several levels in badass and he's a lot more jaded, but at heart, he’s still a sweetheart who does this work because he wants to help people. And yet people who know him still call him ‘rookie’, still insinuate he hasn’t changed, and it’d be nice if that was something the game was more interested in exploring.

But while RE2 was inarguably the biggest day of his life to date, RE4 ultimately feels like just another day at the office for new!Leon: beat the bad guy, save the girl, fail to figure out what the fuck Ada’s deal is, go home. Nothing that happens to him in RE4 feels personal. Everything that’s changed him between RE2 and here has already happened, off-screen, and I can’t help but wish we were telling one of those stories instead.

It's not for lack of trying. RE4 opens on a heck of a thesis-statement about Leon: what he’s been through since RE2, hints of conflict with his current employer (“I was ‘asked’ later to join a top-secret government program. Not that I had a choice. The training, the punishing missions, almost killed me.”) There’s also one hell of a mission-statement about his feelings on the Raccoon City incident: “If I could just forget what happened that night, the pain, even for a second, this time, it can be different.”

That’s great as an opener! First question: different how?

What difference here is worth celebrating? This time Ada got away, blatantly alive and with the prize in hand, not even pretending she wasn’t using you? This time you got to save the little-infected-blonde-girl (who-was-only-involved-because-of-her-parents’-career-choices) yourself, instead of Claire doing all the real work? This time you rode out the explosion with only one other survivor for company instead of two? You still saw more people die than you saved! You still left a whole infected-and-dying population behind when you left! Seriously, what’s supposed to be different here?

The game seems to want us to believe that saving Ashley is enough to make it "different." On my second playthrough, I even caught Leon repeating that line, ‘it has to be different this time!’ as he carries her into Luis’ lab. But this doesn’t land for me, because – again – Leon got out of Raccoon City with Claire and Sherry. Claire didn’t need a whole lot of rescuing (much as I gripe about her story, she objectively achieved a whole lot more than Leon did), but she certainly appreciated his help. RE4 even shows us a shot of them all walking off into the sunrise together in its Raccoon City flashback.

The lore surrounding this franchise suggests that post RE2, Leon becomes almost family to Sherry ‒ you'd really think she'd count. I’m sure there’s an angle you can find somewhere where Leon would feel like saving Ashley is ���different’ enough ‒ guilt isn’t a highly logical emotion ‒ but it’s really not coming through for me. And that makes the game's whole thesis statement feel awfully hollow.

Some other token thematic attempts are made: on the boat with Ada, Leon says, “you try to save one person, you get a hundred more killed.” Well, in the process of saving Ashley, they got Luis, Mike, and both those Spanish cops from the opening sequence killed. Saddler and his cult do get wiped out in a way more definitive way than Umbrella did in RE2 ‒ and that surely saves more lives in the long run than saving just Ashley ever could ‒ but that doesn’t seem to be what "has to be different" is going for. This is a lot like my issues with how Jill’s PTSD was dealt with in RE3 – we’re just vaguely waving at a past conflict as a way to lend nebulous weight to the present, and hoping the audience will fill in the blanks without further prompting. This is not how successful theming works!

Really, what makes this so disappointing to me is that it’s not like Capcom has never done PTSD-backstory well. See, as exhibit A: Resident Evil 8. Game opens with multiple reminders that Ethan is still dealing with trauma from RE7, the feeling that he ‘never really left the Baker’s basement’ – and as the story progresses, we learn that in a very real sense, he never did.

The reveal is the answer to a mystery that's been teased repeatedly since RE7, and coming to terms with it is a vital part of Ethan’s character arc. Though plenty is still left to the audience’s imagination, the pieces are all there. Ethan’s no longer in denial about how much his experience has changed him, but what matters to him hasn’t changed. If he’d come out of the Baker’s basement still human, he’d never have survived long enough to save Rose ‒ hell, there'd have been no Rose at all. There’s no going home again for Ethan, but he’s at peace with that. It’s really that simple: give us specifics, and specifics that make sense.

Ultimately, I think trying to frame RE4 as RE2-but-different was a mistake. The original RE4 wasn’t conceived that way, and the remake hasn’t been remade hard enough to make it so.

That doesn’t mean there’s no Leon-centric thematic material to explore. That opening also sets out a wealth of great potential surrounding Leon’s ‘not that I had a choice’ position. Build on the conflict between the Leon who’s out here trying to save a girl’s life, vs the Leon who’s out here trying to protect US political interests. Play with the idea that he’s still being used by the US, just as Ada was using him back in RE2! Let the enemies point out that Leon is as much a puppet of the US administration as the ganados are puppets of Saddler! Fucking do something with Krauser: one of the very same people who put Leon through all that ‘training that almost killed him’ has turned around and decided that their job is a sucker’s bet ‒ that should be a thematic goldmine! And then let Leon turn around and tell them all to go to hell. It’s all right there, c’mon!

The game toys with the question of whether Leon’s changed since RE2 – Krauser says he hasn’t, Ada says he hasn’t – heck, even Luis’ final words, a guy can change, right? are poking around the edges of similar themes. Leon’s problem back in RE2 was never a failure to save people, it’s getting too caught up in other people’s power plays to make any real difference himself. Is that still true here? It's really not clear.

Similarly, it’s so easy to imagine Leon was chosen for the job in RE4 because he’s got such a hero-complex he’s obviously going to work hardest to keep Ashley safe – because no, Leon may have taken a dozen levels in badass, but at his core, he hasn’t changed. But I’m pretty sure he’s going to be okay with that, just as long as he’s changed enough to be able to get the job done.

And think how much more it should give Leon and Ashley to bond over too, when… oh, right. Time to talk about Ashley.

The general buzz about remake!Ashley has been overwhelmingly positive. She’s so much better than the infamously-annoying original!Ashley, she feels like a real person now, people legitimately care about protecting her, and so on. And I sure as hell don’t want to tell anyone they shouldn’t like new-Ashley. She’s not annoying. I didn’t dislike her as a character. But the longer I spent with her in this game (and you spend more time with her than another other non-Leon character), the less she felt like an actual person to me, and the more glaring it was just how little I knew about her.

Here’s what we do learn about Ashley. She’s a college student, apparently 20 years old (she doesn’t really look that old, but what the hell, there are 20yos who look like Ashley, let’s not get stuck on this one). Her father is the president of the United States. She develops quite the crush on Leon over the course of the game (and who can blame her?) Leon handles this as deftly as you could ask for under the circumstances – he doesn’t want to lead her on, but he also doesn’t want to shut her down any harder than he has to. Ashley is understandably terrified, but coping with it with enough composure to keep her head most of the time, and the one time she does freak out and run off, it leads to one of my favourite scenes in the game – where Leon comforts her, and gets to show his gentler side.

Over the course of the game, she gains a certain level of confidence – in herself, and in Leon’s ability to protect her. All that talk about being his partner and wanting to become an agent like him is probably just her crush showing, but again, Leon treads a careful line to validate her as much as possible without ever really saying yes.

And this is all fine, but nothing really changes in Leon’s feelings about Ashley as they spend more time together. He’s 100% there to protect her before they met, and after spending all that time with her, sure, same deal. That’s his job. Nor does Ashley herself really get to change much. In her early chapters, she's already capable of smashing a window to save Leon from a burning building. By the end, she's... still completely helpless to save herself without him. Nothing really pays off.

Alright, now let me tell you about Ashley.

Ashley is a fucking political prisoner, a pawn to people who see her only as a means to an end, and yet the notion she’s in a situation any bigger than herself never enters the picture. At an age when a girl should be earning some independence, she’s going to be officially pigeonholed as her father’s daughter in the minds of the entire world. For four to eight years of the past and/or future, she’s going to be one of the most important and over-protected people on the planet. And yet, within the last day or two, all that security failed. People she and her father trusted – heck, that the whole US government administration trusted – betrayed them. She’s been kidnapped out of the blue, presumably bundled into a plane and flown across the world to some hick-village in rural Spain.

Surely Ashley should have some kind of opinion on all that, right?

There are all sorts of plausible reactions someone might have to this kind of situation. She could blame herself for not taking security more seriously. She could blame her security team for letting her down; her dad for putting her in this position, the possibilities go on. The game does vaguely wave in the direction of Ashley having (reasonable) trust issues when Leon first appears, given she attacks him with a candlestick and runs off, but then she, well, sees some ganados out the window, and everything is forgotten? It’s all over very quickly. Her only opinion on her situation is that she doesn't want to be taken over by a parasite. Such character!

Later in the game, we discover that Krauser was personally involved in her abduction. Ashley never gets to have an opinion on this. Did she know Krauser personally, or was he just pulling strings from a distance? Wouldn’t she have questions for Leon about his relationship with Krauser? Wouldn’t this have been a great opportunity to expand on Leon’s barely-a-footnote history with Krauser and that whole messed up political conspiracy ‒ even to talk about why Leon was trusted enough to be sent on this mission alone? Well, too bad – we’re on the back foot of the Ashley-two-step throughout both Krauser’s appearances, so Ashley’s not around. And Krauser’s own motivations are apparently no more complicated than "wants to be more macho than everyone else." What a damn waste.

Beyond the initial section set in the village itself, it’s disappointing how much of the plot of RE4 basically comes down to: Ashley gets captured, Leon rescues her, rinse and repeat. There are variations, sure (Ashley freaks out and runs off, Leon has to find her, Leon gets trapped, Ashley has to free him) – but the overall pattern gets pretty monotonous. Ashley frees Leon, then immediately gets captured. Leon tries to rescue her, but fails, and is thrown down a hole. Leon almost catches up with Ashley, but she’s being moved to the island. Leon finds Ashley on the island and rescues her, finally! Ashley swiftly gets captured again. Leon rescues her, again. But don’t you dare let Ashley get carried off by one of those goons out of sequence, that’s an insta-fail state. What, you think this is a situation where the bad guys can just carry Ashley away with impunity? Ha.

This is what I really mean when I say it feels like this game is just spinning its wheels for so much of its runtime. There is some additional plot surrounding Luis to break things up a bit, and a few allusions to the idea Ada’s up to something, somewhere, with a grand total of 4 named boss-villains popping up to monologue and/or fight you. But they're all kept pretty rigorously segregated from one another, like cast members who will no longer appear in the same scenes for contractual reasons. 'Wants power' or 'is under mind control' is as complex as the villainous motivations get.

The villains of RE2, 7 and 8 all had their own relationships, conflicts and internal power struggles, all presented for you in cutscenes and dialogue, and the result created some of the most memorable characters of the whole franchise. In RE4, you're lucky if you glimpse a vague hint of history in a document somewhere. C’mon, game, you’ve put Sargent Rambo and Midget Napoleon on the same team, and I don’t even get to see how much they must hate each other? That’s just not fair!

Ada’s role in this game feels like such a missed opportunity too. The final note she and Leon end on in RE2 could have gone in so many directions (how much did she genuinely care about him? Was she just bluffing by lowering her gun?) if they’d only had the sense to play into it. But RE4 seems to have picked up the tune a few verses earlier, back at ‘Ada’s evil and using Leon without a care’, and just keeps on repeating that until the scene fades out. Leon gets no answers. Maybe Ada sees him as slightly more than a useful tool, but who’d know? Ada’s just… there. Remember Ada? She’s a thing that happens to Leon sometimes.

But there was still the potential to do so much more. Tell me more about Ashley, to begin with! What’s her relationship with her father like? What’s she studying at uni? How well did she know her security team? Does she even know what country she’s in? Let her and Leon bond over their positions as human pawns in political schemes so much bigger than them as people. Let someone wonder if it’s better Ashley dies than comes home infected. Let the goal of saving-Ashley come into conflict with the goal of defeating-Saddler! Let Leon question his superiors' priorities! It's all right there to play with, I promise you!

Heck, let Hunnigan (or some other official voice in Leon’s earpiece) disagree with him at some point. Delve deeper into the scale and implications of Krauser’s betrayal! Contrast him with Luis – they’re on virtually opposite tracks as people who’ve switched sides, but they’ve both made more meaningful decisions about who to work for than Leon ever has. Let me feel all the different interests at conflict here – between Luis, Ada, the US government, Krauser’s rebellion, and Saddler’s cult, there should be enough of them. Let Leon question what he’s doing there – saving one girl or saving the whole US administration, but ultimately just saving one girl. And if you still want to tie it to RE2, it doesn’t have to be about it being different, it can be about Leon feeling like he’s made a difference this time. There’s got to be something you can find here that’ll resonate.

Going by the general reception to the game, these don’t seem to be issues that have bothered the masses. Given how revered RE4 is in gaming history, I can well believe there was real resistance at Capcom HQ about to trying to rework it more than a relative minimum, without trying to build any real thematic weight into what originally worked as a fairly cartoony rescue-the-princess caper. It’s still got great gameplay and some lovely character moments – I wouldn’t dream of debating that. But as a whole, RE4 felt thematically empty in a way I didn’t get from RE’s 7, 8 or Leon’s story from the remake of 2. If anything, it reminded me more of my problems with RE3 or Claire’s story in 2 – there are ideas here, but what they add up to is less than the sum of its parts. And that’s a disappointing feeling to come away with.

The remake still has a lot going for it. But remade a little harder, I can’t help but feel it could’ve been so much more.

Short Answer: I really liked it!!!! Seeing Ada's relationships with Luis and Wesker get more fleshed out was great!

Long Answer (and I do mean long) below hehe

Okay so first things first, her outfit is so ridiculous it's not even funny. I know this has been a common critique since we first saw it, but seeing just her ripping and running in those boots really hammered it in. There's no fucking way she went to Spain in those heels. No fucking way. I thought she looked exceptionally stupid in her original 4 outfit, and I feel the same now.

Loved seeing hookshot being used to fight!!! Amazing!!! I loved it! This also made me wonder if Ada's left arm is fucked up from using it so much.

"What terrible actions will be done in its name, and who will pay it's dark cost? Because in this world, someone always pays. Best not to ask who or why. I understood that. Made my piece with it. Until that one night in Raccoon City... changed everything" YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHA AMAZING! AMAZING! LOVELY! (the "dark cost" line is incredibly goofy but it gets the point across) IMMACULATE LINE!

I really enjoyed how the game made it Very Clear that Ada does not fucking like Wesker. The "nicest" lines she has to him aren't even nice, they're just her trying to appease him so she can get off her fucking back.

Frankly, the scene where Wesker saves Ada is so utterly ridiculous to me. You're telling me that Wesker, a white supremacist who has plans of genocide, risked his life to save a woman of color who he doesn't trust and doesn't fucking like? Not likely.

Also Ada waking up in a bed was Strange. Very Strange. Didn't like it one bit. And even if it wasn't strange... you're telling me wesker cared enough about Ada to take her all the way upstairs to a bed? No... no he would have dropped her on a couch or something. Maybe even the floor! Saving Ada and carrying her to the bed imply Wesker cares for her... which is weird... because the game shows us many times that he doesn't.

It was just very strange and frankly I can't give you a good reason why he needed to be there at all. It feels like they just wanted to make the most out of the Wesker model they no doubt poured an assload of money into.

The Ashley scene was unexpected, I thought the shot of her in the trailer was a misdirection, but no she and Ada had like 20 seconds together. This brings me to a question I've had for MONTHS!!! In 4r, Ashley sees Ada clear as day... so when she goes back to the states and gets interrogated... what happens with that? It's not like before when it was only Leon who saw her and he could just erase her from the reports, both he and Ashley are gonna have to admit they did get help... so what do they say? I Would Like To Know.

And finally another terrible part was when the dlc ended with Wesker and I was suddenly hit with the realization that they for sure are gonna remake 5. Which. I always knew would happen but please I can't deal with that (though I do believe 5 is one of the games that actually needs a remake. Because. Um. Well just look at it)

Another thing I appreciated was that they made it abundantly clear that Leon wasn't even close to being her priority. They are quite literally two people going their Seperate Ways (ba-dum tss.) Not only that, but (and this might totally be me) every time Leon was talking to her I just had to roll my eyes, because now I know the full context of what Ada was doing, so everything Leon was saying to her felt like bullshit lmao.

Reading all of this makes it seem like I didn't like it at all lmao, but no, these are just my critiques lol.

OH! ALSO! Not to promote "Ada should have her own game where she's a lead without leon" propaganda... but... well this version of seperate ways made it Very Clear she can do her own thing without that white parasite!!!

It’s Different Now 🩵💜

Tim is reeling after Lucy is hurt on a call. Realizing his fears now that they are in a relationship. Tim has realizations about their future. Angela being a wonderful, supportive best friend to Tim.

Tim and Lucy have been together as a full, fledged couple for a few months. A lot has happened since they first FINALLY admitted how they felt about one another. They had been in love with each other long before getting together. There was a lot of hurdles in their way, professionally speaking. Tim was Lucy’s TO while she was a rookie. Even after she had graduated to a P2, Tim was now a Sargent and was in Lucy’s chain of command. There was just no world where a relationship would be appropriate. With that, all they could do was move forward. Started dating other people, that would be the solution to moving on from their feelings. Tim started dating lifeguard Ashley and Lucy dating ADA lawyer Chris. This worked until it didn’t. No matter how hard they tried, could never let go of their feelings. In fact the opposite occurred, feelings only got stronger. Eventually, their relationships fizzled out. Tim asked Lucy out on a date. Who knows, they might find out after a date or two they didn’t work as a couple and could easily return to being best friends. If they found out early, there would be no damage to their friendship. Well, the exact opposite had happened. There was no doubt. They were head over heels in love with each other. After secretly dating for a while. There came a time where professional decisions needed to be made. Tim didn’t want Lucy to have to transfer to another station. She was happy, she had friends who were her family. There was no way Tim was going to allow her make that sacrifice. Tim took a position out of her chain of command. Court Liason Sargent. A desk job which didn’t ever appeal to him, he loved action. But this was all for love, he was willing without a ounce of hesitation to make this sacrifice. Lucy was the love of his life and he would do anything to make her happy. Tim didn’t want her to have to transfer and be forced to work midnight shifts as a newbie. Lucy for her part hated that Tim sacrificed his happiness to take a desk job for her. She absolutely loved him for it but was determined to get him a better job. With the help of Smitty of all people and the rest of the Wilshire family they all found a way to move people around and a retirement. Tim was excited when a spot opened up in Metro. Having no idea his girlfriend was the mastermind behind the move. Not to mention her debt to Smitty, having to deep clean his motor home. As far as Lucy was concerned this was all worth it.

Tim loved Metro. Even asking himself, why he hadn’t made this move earlier. He was thriving as a Metro Sargent, even building friendships with his new team. Lucy paired now with Aaron still was thriving and loving patrol. Their relationship was fully out in the open. Wilshire finding out was not surprising to anyone. Everyone knew the feelings these two had for years. They we just happy they finally weren’t acting like idiots anymore. Tim and Lucy thought when they exposed their secret, there would of been more of a shock value. Little did they know bets had been going around the station for years now. Apparently they were the last to know how they actually felt. They spent all nights together either at Lucy’s or Tim’s. Moving in had been talked about on many occasions and it was inevitable they would be taking the next step very soon. Tim would marry Lucy tomorrow. She was it for him. His one true love. All his relationships in the past couldn’t compare to Lucy. He loved her in a way he never thought possible even with Isobel who he loved deeply. Lucy was so much more to him. Everything was perfect.

There was one thing that was left unsaid. Mostly, because Tim especially couldn’t think about the possibility. The chance given their job that Lucy could get hurt. When Lucy was kidnapped and Tim pulled her from that barrel breathing life back into her again was one of the worst days of his life. The thought of losing his rookie who had become his friend was unimaginable. It was different now. The thought of losing her now they were a couple, in love with each other was something Tim never allowed himself to think about. He knew he wouldn’t survive if anything happened to her. Today, on shift he was going to be faced with this terrifying reality.

Lucy and Aaron had responded to a call where things went sideways in a hurry. In the end she had taken a round in the shoulder before Aaron was able to apprehend the suspect from behind. As Aaron called for paramedic assistance. Everyone at Wilshire had heard the call come through on the radio. Tim, didn’t hear patrol calls as in metro they were specifically called in to a situation. When they weren’t on a op, there day was in training courses.

Tim returned to Wilshire after a training session full of adrenaline. As he walked through the station. He saw Grey, Angela and Nyla looking concerned. At first he thought they might be conversing regarding a case with the detectives but as they looked over his way, their facial expressions said it all. He had a sinking feeling. He knew something bad happened and was convinced it had to do with Lucy. As he walked over, his heart was racing.

“What’s wrong? Lu-Lucy, is she ok?”

Grey began to speak.

“Tim. There has been a incident while Chen and Thorsen responded to a call. I don’t have the details but Lucy was shot and is at the hospital. She is in serious but stable condition according to Aaron”

Tim felt like he was going to be sick. He couldn’t get any words out.

“I-I need to go see her. I need to be with her”

“I will let your team know you had a family emergency”

Angela knowing he shouldn’t be driving.

“Cmon. Let’s go. I will drive you. Let’s go see your girl”

As they were driving to the hospital. To Tim the 7 minute drive felt like a eternity. He couldn’t sit still. Angela noticing Tim’s hands shaking uncontrollably.

“Tim. She’s going to be OK. She’s stable. Lucy is a fighter. Look at everything she has gone through. What you both have gone through together. There is no way she is going to leave you now. Now, that you idiots finally got your heads out of your asses. She will fight to the death to get back to you”

“An-Ang. I can’t lose her. I am so in love with her. I love her more than life itself. I never let myself think of anything ever happening to her. It’s too terrifying and now it’s happening. I feel like I can’t breathe.”

“Tim. Shes going to be OK. You will be able to hold her very soon. Tell her you love her”

“Ang. I’m telling you. I wanna marry her. I know we don’t even officially live together yet but I wanna marry her tomorrow if she would let me. I even have a ring already”

“Can’t say I’m surprised. You two are already a married couple. I say go for it. I see the way she looks at you, there is no doubt it will be a emphatic YES”

As they arrived at the hospital. Tim ran in as fast as his legs would possibly go. As he approached the desk and showed his badge asking for his partner Lucy. Using his LAPD authority to be able to see her. As he made his way through the waiting room. Laying eyes on Aaron.

“THORSEN. Is she okay? Where is she?”

“Sir. She’s stable. I haven’t heard anything in a while”

As a doctor came out and asked if Lucy Chen’s family was here.

“Right here. She’s my girlfriend.”

“OK. So the bullet went through her shoulder and caused significant tearing. We surgically were able to repair the damage. She’s going to be out of commission for a while and in a sling. Miss. Chen was quite lucky that the bullet missed any organs and lost minimal blood. She is going to make a full recovery”

Tim let out a relief filled gasp. Feeling like the weight of the world had been lifted.

“Can I see her?”

“Yes, of course. I will have a nurse take you back”

“I told you. She’s a fighter”

“Thank you for everything Ang. Keeping me sane”

“Of course. That’s what best friends are for. Now go be with your girl. And Tim…Don’t wait too long to put that ring on her finger”

“I won’t. As soon as I get her home. I’m gonna propose. Right now I just need to hold her and smother her with love “

Tim made his way down the hall accompanied by a nurse. Walking into her recover room. She looked so peaceful, sound asleep. Sling holding her shoulder in place. All he could think was thank god she was still here with him, he hadn’t lost her. She never looked so beautiful even in a hospital gown and messy, tangled hair. Gosh, he thought he couldn’t possibly love her more. He had never been more wrong. Tim made his way to her beside. Sitting down in the open chair. Grabbing her hand, intertwining their fingers. Tears forming in the corners of his eyes. Moments later, Lucy opening her eyes. Tim looking at her with admiration. Those big, brown eyes have never looked so beautiful. With a raspy voice, from the anesthesia effects.

“Hey you”

Finally played Resident Evil 4

So I beat RE4 for the first time recently and I kinda just wanna ramble incoherently about it because WOW what a game. It was absolutely fantastic and absolutely deserves its legacy.

The rest of what I wanna say is below the cut but just know that I do go into some spoilers and also there’s mentions of cults. That’s another thing - don’t play this game if cults are a genuine trigger for you. A cult plays a major role in the plot.

It’s a game I’ve had my eyes on for a while now. Years actually. I never got around to it for a multitude of reasons but now with the upcoming remake and it being only 5 bucks during the Steam winter sale, I decided to finally pick it up.

First off, the visuals have aged impressively well. I’m not one of those goofballs who thinks visuals make or break a game but I will absolutely give praise when devs go the extra mile to give a game a good art style. Yes, RE4 is very clearly a game from the mid 2000s, visually. But it has an art style that still stands out - to me at least.

Then there’s the story. I am very impressed with how this game balances goofy action movie shit with genuine horror without one taking away from the other. I know that’s a part of the magic of RE at this point - campiness combined with genuine horror - but still. This game manages to be both fucking hilarious and absolutely horrifying at the same time which is VERY impressive, even more so given that the game has almost been out for 2 decades.

By far the scariest thing to me about the game were the Los Illuminados. The Las Plagas itself didn’t really freak me out because at the end of the day parasites are just trying to survive. Yeah getting your head esploded and/or turning you into a horrible abomination as the Plaga completely overtook you would suck but you can’t get mad at it. It’s just trying to live. What is fucking horrifying to me is the idea of a cult weaponizing such creatures to indoctrinate people into their ideology and to commit international terrorism. It just made me think of the lengths that cults have historically gone to spread their fucked up ideologies. That felt very real despite some of the insane and at times goofy things that happen in this game.

The knife fight with Krauser was, as a scene itself, fantastic. The quick time events were annoying though. Actually that has to be my biggest complaint with the game, personally - the QTEs - I got used to them and sometimes they were fine that doesn’t mean they aren’t annoying as hell for the most part. I really hope the remake gets rid of at least some of them.

I do wanna say, though, is that I really do not understand the Ashley hate. I thought she was very likable and adorable. Any time I got annoyed during the escort missions with her it was more so at the game itself and not her yelling for help or getting injured. She really isn’t a bad character at all. Also she’s voiced by Carolyn Lawrence. There’s no way I could be annoyed by her.

I do, on the other hand, understand why everyone loves the merchant. He is absolutely wonderful and I adore him. <3

Finally, Leon. Leon himself is an absolute highlight of this game. He is a very likable and endearing guy who, while clearly hardened after the events in Raccoon City, is still very caring and kind. Also he says the dumbest things and I adore it. I knew about some of his goofy one-liners beforehand but I was still grinning ear to ear each time he said one of them. He is legit a great character though - just in general, not exclusive to RE4. He’s definitely my favorite RE character now. Also he’s an absolute babygirl. Ada is also great and I love the messy, complex dynamic between her and Leon.

These are far from my full thoughts and I AM going to yell about this game more on other posts but again this is just me. like. yelling. Anyway, I am VERY excited for the remake. I love the direction they’re taking it in and that it’s going to be very different from the original. Because the original is an amazing game that should not be “replaced”.

I'm so glad that you've asked. I caution you, however, in asking me these sorts of questions, as you likely will not enjoy what I have to say.

Absolutely not.

I believe that my feelings on Leon can be summed up in the following statement: He is entirely wasted potential. Not that he could do or be better, but that potential is wasted on him.

My thoughts on Leon S. Kennedy:

Shall we start at the beginning? He was late for his first day of work. One would think that of any job, law enforcement may be one that perhaps you may want to, at least, pretend to be semi-competent in. Back further still in the timeline? Alright: He requested official assignment to Raccoon City but made no travel nor housing plans. Upon receiving his assignment (again, that he requested) his girlfriend broke up with him, likely because she's realised the level of incompetence hiding beneath that awful fringe. I am under the impression that this assignment request was made without conversation with his girlfriend, but that's moot because now they've broken up. Next, he spends the night in a hotel. Better yet, he's gone off his tits. When he is supposed to start his first day of work, as a law enforcement officer, the next morning. Irresponsible. This, of course, causes him to oversleep.

He wakes up, stumbles on into his vehicle, drives into Raccoon City, past the military blockade, and promptly strikes a woman with his car. Then shoots her. Meanwhile, Leon is still entirely unaware of the outbreak situation. He is a murderer masquerading as a hero.

My next few points I will not elaborate on, as I believe they are self-explanatory. He has wrecked every vehicle he has touched. Without fail. I fully believe that not even the getaway jet-ski is exempt. There is a reason that we do not see Ashley again after that moment, and I presume that this is why. Ada is and has been exploiting him in every installment, and yet he still does not realise- he is blinded by infatuation. Furthermore: Though he is blinded by infatuation, he still fails to recognise her in Four. He believes people who function differently than he does are "uncivilised".

He turns over Sherry to the US Government. This point I will elaborate on. I will admit at the onset that I am perhaps a bit biased on this one, however... Post-Two, Claire goes on her Code: Veronica journey, leaving Sherry in Leon's care (which is one strike for you, Ms. Redfield). They are "apprehended" and separated. Leon is offered a job with the government, which he is entirely unqualified for, and Sherry is subjected to years of experimentation and testing. It is further implied in Six that after this moment, Leon has no further contact with Sherry. When they meet in Lanshiang, he says something akin to "Oh, yeah, I had heard that you became an agent"- during a time in which they both worked for the same organisation. What a lovely way to treat someone who had lost everything in the events of Two, and then depended on you to keep her safe. Furthermore, she was left in his care. I do wonder what his explanation was when Claire came back from Antarctica. "Yes, I surrendered that sweet little girl that we saved to the government- BUT NOW I WORK FOR STRATCOM"! Mind you, his track record for employment at this point is in the "Dying" status.

His jokes are insufferable.

His misguided attempts at flirting at Hunnigan makes my skin crawl.

His general behaviour borders on imbecilic.

This next bit is the most recent development in the universe, so I'll warn you against spoilers if you've not caught up and watched Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. He is entirely willing to cover up the US Government's use of BOWs in their military. In fact, he sacrifices a friendship/partnership with Claire over it. For what? To protect the World Order? Please. He was there, in Two. He saw what it was that they had been attempting to do by contracting Umbrella to make them bioweapons, and the possible (likely) repercussions of those choices. Taking this into account, it is entirely unsurprising that his Six scenario kicks off the way that it does. Do not think I do not notice that President Benford states that he is going to admit to the world that the US Government had fingers in the pie that was the Raccoon City Incident, and then he suddenly ends up a zombie and Leon has to shoot him dead. ... I don't recall that you actually do see Benford's method of infection. Hmm. Awfully suspicious of you, Mr. Kennedy.

There are any number of further problems that I have with this full toddler of a man, but these are my main points. In short- he is a fool and it physically pains me to have to keep him alive in his games. I stand by my name-calling.

it's not for everyone that is for sure, but people using game cutscenes, dialogues and whatnot to prove and back up their claims doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things because those very same cutscenes and dialogues and overall writing can be interpreted numerous different ways

example: ada told leon to abandon ashley purely because she wanted to fuck him and nothing more, just wanted ashley out of the way so leon can be hers and hers alone

alternatively: she was testing him, wanted to see if he's still that rookie cop from rc followed by a suggestive comment

u see? its as if ada came there and suddenly went full horny mode to temp leon which is plain stupid but each to their own

what I'm getting at is, cutscenes and dialogues from game such as re, things don't go that deep, things aren't really beholden of over thinking and nit picking yet it still happens, it's really not science just bias and excuse to be an asshole

Hmmm. Well, reading those two examples gave me a third option wherein that scene Ada is testing Leon, BUT it's with the vague suggestion he might get something good out of it if he takes orders and doesn't ask questions like the government dog he is. In this way, the interaction can be read as extremely patronizing to his position as a federal agent, and the impact of those words could genuinely frustrate him because his job wasn't a choice he made. Which is something Ada probably wouldn't know about either. Her being unaware and mocking him regardless is an interesting dynamic to play too. He'd never tell her what happened, but she would notice the spike of aggression and misread it as her joke hitting too close to the truth she believes instead of the actual situation.

Yes one example is riddled with horny while the other tries to play it neutral, but without reading the good and the bad, there's less angles for me to observe and pick at a scene. The more angles there are, the more interpretations there are, the higher chance you have of someone putting things together differently, or in a way you like, if you don't put it out there yourself first.

You're right in that things in RE aren't that deep. The writing has changed too many hands, and it's too non-committal to all the relationships (familial, romantic, and platonic) to be remotely decent. Yet, the other main point of fandom is to really delve into the material you're given and extrapolate ideas and conclusions from it.

Some people take a very surface level look and run with it. Some people only see what they want to see. Some people try to pick it apart to understand or make connections to the characters' behavior in previous or later iterations, or what certain choices might mean for the story going forward. I'm in that third group because I love character interpretation! Chris, Leon, Jill, and Claire wouldn't have a character at all if they were in only one game or movie! Taking the common writing decisions shown in the games/movies and layering them is all anyone can do if they want to attempt to speak objectively about anything in this franchise.

What made you sense Ada as a secret sub? Really interested in this take since I've seen lots of people seeing her as a dom (though I'm sure they're most likely thinking of her OG counterpart, but still,,)

it's the way she interacts with Wesker and Luis.

in OG, she's always trying to stay 20 steps ahead of everyone and keeps everything held very close to the chest as she focuses on maintaining strict control of everything at all times. she doesn't do that in RE4make.

she puts a lot of trust in Luis that isn't exactly warranted, and she's willing to follow his lead and play along in certain situations when she should rightfully be the one in control calling the shots. that scene where she gets fed up with him and holds him up and says she doesn't give a fuck about Leon and Ashley being infected is an anomaly; her behavior towards him is primarily trusting and patient while Luis works shit out.

and with Wesker, like... she gives him so much power over her that OG Ada just never put up with. the scene in the trailer of Wesker holding her at gun point, once you see it in its full context, smacks of "oh this is a game they play that they're both in on. they get off on this dynamic. got it."

and the way that she asks him if he's going to stay and back her up very much feels like a "no I mean literally are you going to get behind me and fuck me from behind while we have this bed and this room?"

even the way she tells him "cool it with the threats, Wesker" isn't... she's not in command of that statement. it isn't a threat of "stop or else, because you know that we're equals, and I'm not going to put up with your shit" the way she sounds when she talks back to him in OG SW. it's more of a... "I know how you get sometimes, but please stop."

like Ada's not a pushover. she takes care of herself first and foremost, per her Chaotic Neutral nature. however comma I also got the sense that she feels like her life would be much better/easier if she could trust the people around her to take care of her, too. like that's what she really, secretly wants. which is probably why Leon got to her so bad in RE2make. because, at the start of RE2make, Ada very much came off as "no, I am in control, you will do what I say, and you don't get a choice" like she was in OG. but Leon being Leon was like "but I wanna take care of you tho?"

basically I'm saying that Leon was a sort of sexual awakening for her, but he was also one that she didn't ultimately pursue because he was too soft in the way he went about taking care of her.

we literally see Wesker taking care of Ada in his very Wesker way in SW, and that is the most open and normal Ada seems to feel/act in the entire game. if he hadn't gone completely bonkers, the two of them would've probably been together forever.

not saying that Ada was in love with Wesker or anything, just that Wesker was, at one point at least, very in tune with Ada's needs, and she probably didn't feel the urge to look for anything deeper than that. the lifestyle she chose wouldn't have allowed it anyway.
