Yet Again, I've Been Given the Internet and I Made Another Thing.
I've been thinking a lot lately about how people totally misinterpret Jack Merridew because actually he's really insecure, overemotional and unsure of himself throughout the whole book (or maybe I'm just misinterpreting him, but I like my interpretation more than the fanon one tbh) and I recently got MGMT's Oracular Spectacular, so now I'm thinking about it even more...
...Because the song 'Future Reflections' reminds me a lot of Jack talking about himself and Ralph. I love that song and also the album so much!
So after getting super inspired, I wrote a oneshot!
Here's the link- https://archiveofourown.org/works/14002335
And the summary-
Tomorrow the tribe will finally hunt the traitorous Ralph and end him once and for all.
So why isn't their Chief excited about it?
The untold tale of Jack Merridew's nighttime musings as he wonders where everything went wrong. And maybe he discovers some things about himself he didn't realise before along the way...
It's about Jack being conflicted over his feelings towards Ralph, being just a little gay for him and also not really wanting to be a savage murderer. At the same time though, he kinda does.
And for some reason a paragraph of it near the start is from Roger's perspective? Sorry about that ;;;
This is my 80th work (they're all oneshots) for AO3, an achievement I'm both proud and ashamed of, and I know that it's annoying to see advertisements on here, but I'd really appreciate it if you tell me what you think! I write a lot of Lord of the Flies stuff and I want to know if my characterisation is okay before I keep going with my weird Rogice/Ralmon/SIN chapter fic.

Everyone's bae Jack Merri-do-me for the character thing
Send Me a Character: Jack Merridew (Lord of the Flies)
· First impression: I loved him from the get-go, honestly.
I mean,my opinions of him have changed kinda for the last like, six years I have beenin the fandom, but since I first read the book he was one of my favorites, justlike Piggy. I find him a fascinating character, one of the most complex in theentire novel (besides Piggy and Ralph, of course). I’d actually say he’s themost complex but I also go back and forth between him and those other two.
Butyeah, he is just one of those characters you love to hate, or that you justlove in general and you never hate, but sometimes I am that way as well. He’s such a brat, but one that could holdauthority over others like he’s just playing a game of dominoes. He reminds mea lot of Eric Cartman from South Park, which is funny because I am just asobsessed with Cartman for those same reasons. They can basically do whateverthey set their minds to, even if their moral scale is a little, erm, crooked.
So yeah, I love him.
· Impression now: If you post hate about him I will more thanlikely agree with you but at the same time cringe internally for the rest of mylife because he’s my son and I hold him close to my heart.
· Favorite moment: When Jack and the other hunters catch a pig forthe first time and even though Ralph is pissed as all hell Jack is so excitedto tell his friend that they caught one. Like, it is honestly so precious howexcited he gets to tell Ralph about the hunt. And of course, when he runs offbecause he’s so dramatic, like Christ.
· Idea for a story: UM.
I have been thinking of writing aJack-centric oneshot, or something. Like post-island, just how Jack experienceswith the PTSD or maybe writing him in a future relationship where it’s absoluteshit because his adult self is truly exposed for what it is and he gets himselfinto deep ship with toxic relationships and maybe reuniting with Ralph andthere being that obvious tension there. There are so many ideas I have, storywise, for Jack, let’s be honest here.
· Unpopular opinion: I honestly don’t believe Jack was the representationof evil within the novel.
I already don’t give too much ofa crap towards how allegorical representation plays a role in the novel –obviously I understand how important it is, and how Jack could be presented asevil, but I just don’t care/see it. When I think of evil in the novel, my firsttrain of thought goes to Roger.
Obviously Jack and Roger are reckless indifferent ways, Roger being much more physical (Jack is physical don’t get me wrong but there’s kind of point of his cowardice when he doesn’t physically kill anyone besides Simon, while Roger literally hurled a boulder at Piggy), and Jack being more disturbed inthe sense of everything else besides just what is physical, but I still seeJack like I see Ralph – two humans pushed by the other forces of sidecharacters into the moral scale. Ralph with Piggy, and Jack with Roger. Theserelationships play a huge role within the novel and it’s important to see that,I feel.
So yeah, I am not expectingeveryone to share the same opinion I have about this but it is an unpopular oneI have.
· Favorite relationship: For obvious reasons, the relationshipbetween Jack and Ralph, and not only because I ship them but because I findtheir overall dynamic really interesting, to see these once friends turnagainst one another in a tragic way.
The way Ralph cries, “Why do you hate me?”towards the end of the novel makes my heart break everytime. Honestly theisland has done such horrible things to these boys, I just wanted everything toturn out okay but it never does and that’s kind of the beauty with this novel but the same time such a pain. Jack andRalph’s relationship regardless of whether you think there’s the potential forromantic intentions there is still incredibly complex and one of the moreinteresting facets about Lord of the Flies.
· Favorite headcanon: I don’t really think too much aboutheadcanons but I would like to think that Jack had a brother or a sister, Iactually wrote a oneshot years ago about him having an older sister that foundout about the events of the island, but the same time his cocky personality andsuperiority complex kind of point towards him being an only child as well, butit’s still something I like to think about.
Thank you!
#jack merridew#lotf#I know I am going to get a lot of crap for the opinion so whatever I have excepted my fate#lord of the flies#send a character#text#jalph
