clancy tour (watching a livestream) essay 🙏

anon, this question made me so unbelievably happy omg. i just can't get around to the eras tour essay, however, i do feel the need to write, so we're doing this instead.

for the context: i woke up at 5:30 today to watch the livestream of clancy LA show. no, i wasn't there in person. but mentally i was.

OVERCOMPENSATE

so this is when i started crying. who the fuck cries on overcompensate, you would ask... well, me, apparently. i honestly think this is the best opener for both, an album and a show. this song gives me so much serotonin i can't even explain it. i'm always worried about tyler tho because his entrance looks dangerous (the jump, the jump, I AM TALKING ABOUT THE JUMP!). nothing bad happened tho, thankfully. i also noticed he was wearing the other version of clancy jacket today, the one with the hood. not that it's important, but it kinda is. for me at least.

HOLDING ON TO YOU

ok, so if you know me you probably know this is my ultimate favourite twenty one pilots song. and the live performance is even better with the crowd stand at the beginning (i swear to god, it's so incredible to me how much trust tyler has for the clique), clancy mask and lightbulb mic (you can tell tyler has a lot of fun with it), and my favourite part - josh's piano backflip during the bridge of the song. fucking iconic. what's not to love.

VIGNETTE

first thing i want to talk about is the insane transition from holding on to you to vignette. honestly, all transitions are so fucking amazing on clancy tour, it's impressive. now, tyler's little dance during this song is one of the most adorable things i've ever seen (he is such a cat omg) and and and! NEIL BANGING OUT THE TUNES!!! i'll be honest with you, because of this part vignette became one of my favourite songs from clancy and definitely one of my faves from this tour.

CAR RADIO

another one of my favourites. car radio will always hold a very special place in my heart, it's so relatable to me. it makes me so happy that we have a chance to see it being performed in clancy costume (and clancy mask!!!). and when tyler teleports at the end! (also i think he's wearing a totally different jacket in this clip which probably means he has three different clancy jackets, i have no proof tho so i'm just gonna shut up. the video is from LA night one tho. not my show). here's another clip, you can see how he teleported here.

THE JUDGE

ok, so for those who don't know, right before every show the fans in their incredible outfits are being filmed while singing the judge together and every night they show a different video of them singing first verse + chorus and then after that tyler comes out with his ukulele to finish the song. it makes me cry for no reason at all. yes, i cried today too (it just makes me so happy to see all the clikkies singing together and they all look so beautiful always). so what happened today? content warning glitch happened during fan video, you can watch it here, then blurryface tweeted this:

the transition. the goddamn transition!!! it's honestly so fucking cool and probably one of my favourite parts of the tour. i absolutely love all jenna's songs and everyone who says they should not be on the setlist, fuck you forever. in this house we stan all jenna's songs. i usually cry on the craving and tyler is being so silly during tear in my heart - this is my favourite thing in the world. plus, do you really hate the sound of ukulele???

BACKSLIDE

ok, i actually started crying as soon as i realized we're singing backslide now. i love this song so goddamn much, it means the world to me. at one point it was my favourite song from clancy. the chorus breaks my poor little heart every single time and live performance of this song is so emotional... especially at the end when tyler is on his knees (the video is not from tonight's show but it's my favourite one from backslide, please watch it, his vocals here are INSANE). it's like crying for help. i wanna kill myself now. i relate to this song so much. also, backslide is the reason i decided to buy clancy tour tickets, so there's that.

SHY AWAY

oh, thank god this one is on the setlist. you know how much i love scaled and icy and i think out of all the songs from this album shy away is the best one to put on the setlist because the live performance is always so fun!!! don't you shy aWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! the scream is absolutely fucking everything oh my god. actually, i just love when tyler screams. but don't we all.

HEATHENS + NEXT SEMESTER

ok, now don't hate me, please, but i was never the biggest fan of heathens (i don't hate the song, i like it, just not as much as the others. i probably wouldn't cry if it wasn't on the setlist). however, the transition (again!!!) from heathens to next semester is the best goddamn thing in the entire world and i am losing my mind every single time i come across any clip of this moment. please, watch it, this is everything!!! one question tho: i know tyler was playing bass on the platform for next semester and he didn't do that today, did he just stop doing this recently or is it because of what happened yesterday during the show? (not during this song tho, or at least i know nothing about it, but it seems like LA fans absolutely cannot behave and he was definitely being more careful today, more about it later tho).

ROUTINES IN THE NIGHT

oh boy, this is my vigilante shit for real. remember vigilante shit performance from the eras tour and how everyone was losing their shit when they saw taylor doing the choreography with this motherfucking chair? yes. it's basically that except tyler is fully dressed. which is even worse maybe (y'all know how i feel about his clothes for some reason). one of my favourite songs from the album, but after seeing the live performance for the first time i became absolutely obsessed with the song. i was genuinely scared today because this is basically what happened last night in LA (i swear to god people are acting like fucking animals) and i noticed that tyler was being much more careful this time: he wasn't coming so close to people, and honestly good for him. he didn't even let them touch him during this part. i can't blame him. i feel so bad for what happened. hope he's ok.

my favourite mashup in the entire fucking world. but before we get into it, please this is so fucking funny and adorable. so basically, before playing the mashup, tyler sat by the piano and he said "currently i'm temperature hot. so i would want to take my jacket off, i promise not to turn on all the dads tonight" and then this happened. poor guy didn't know what to do LMAO. he's such a cutie, please watch the video, he's so adorable i can't. he's also the funniest person on earth. back to the topic, the mashup... i am such a slut for their old songs and this mashup is absolutely fucking insane. the song i love the most out of those is, of course, forest. according to tyler, this song is so old it basically doesn't exist. fuck you, tyler joseph. i can't believe i'm going to hear it live tho, holy shit. i will be fucking SOBBING during this part, i just know that.

this is such a fun song to play live and one of my favourite moments. you can tell how much fun tyler has each time they play it, also this! this is everything!!! he's always so happy when this happens, he trained us well hahaha. it's so fun omg. can't wait to be a part of it. this has always been one of my favourite songs from scaled and icy so i'm glad they decided to keep it on the setlist.

get in, losers. we are entering the lore now. ok, honestly, this part of the tour is absolutely everything to me. torchbearer with his torch? and clancy jacket?? coming to pick him up so they can perform while dema is burning??? AAAAAAAAAAAAAA. oh my GODD. also, navigating is so special to me (i picked this url for a reason) and live performance of this song is fucking fire. watch it. watch the clip. just watch the goddamn clip, will you? we all know this song is on the setlist because of josh, so everybody say thank you josh. also you can tell tyler is very emotional about this song and i just wanna give him a hug. oh my god. i can't wait to hear it live. this will fix me (it will probably make me worse).

boy, here we go. so i started crying at the very beginning of the song and honestly i have no idea how i'm going to handle this live. i am so very normal about this song. it means everything to me. the worst part of it tho was when during the song tyler said "thank you so much for using our music. you've saved us in ways you'll never know". OH MY GOD. i started weeping even more. it's like... their music saved US but we also saved THEM and i need 3-5 business days to recover after that. good lord. listen, i love slowtown and i'm sad that it's not part of the setlist anymore, but i love oldies station a hundred times more and that was a good change me thinks.

i can't even begin to explain how happy i am to have this one on the setlist. it's the funniest moment on tour and i love watching them being stupid on stage. also, jOsH iS sHiRtLeSs. the walk, THE WALK LMAO. the best choreography you've ever seen. i just love seeing them so silly and happy and this is everything. i paid a lot of money to see this live. i'm definitely not gonna regret this.

RIDE

so the thing i love about this tour is that every single night while performing this song tyler brings a different kid to sing the chorus with him (it's the equivalent of giving the hat during 22 on the eras tour i would say). tonight we had an adorable girl named callie (if i'm correct). she did so well! also i was giggling so much when tyler said she's cute (he was giggling too hdshfbhekj). i just love watching him with kids, it's so sweet!!! also she had a great beanie with band's logo, i want one too. please watch the clip of them singing together!

again, i was so scared about my boys because of what happened yesterday in LA. people are fucking animals. i'm so glad, because tyler actually decided to call them out for this and seems like it was much better today. but still. guys please, behave, cause if you're not gonna start acting responsible they are going to stop performing like this. it's still insane compared to the opening night of clancy tour where people didn't even come closer until tyler told them to. i also just noticed now that tyler's t-shirt had black font today (the previous one had red font) for the first time. i think i was just too tired to notice this before. there's not much i can tell you about trees, because you just simply have to be there to understand. it's a perfect song to end the show (for those who don't know: they always close their shows with this one), it's something i experienced live once before and i can't even compare it to anything. i wasn't even crying. my soul literally just left my body. trust me, there's absolutely nothing like trees live. i can show you thousands of clips and it will never be enough. nobody does it like them. seriously. this is the moment. the moment of all moments. i am in fact crying now...

i mean. overall it was a good day. but my memories of it get a bit tainted by the sequel (yes there is a sequel). anyways, let's go with the fun context.

so, yes i did (kinda) have a job interview that day. they haven't called me since so i guess that didn't work out. i had a 1 hour 30 mins trip on public transport to get there so that's why i woke up so early (the interview was at 9:30 i think?). i managed to get there only cause as i got back home to wait for my mum to wake up i got the notification that she had sent me 50 € to my bank account for that day. so i went out again, got to the tram station, recharged my transport card, and then got there. in the end the interview was delayed so whatever but yeah. nothing remarkable there apart from that argentinian guy i chatted with!! like a normal human!!!

anyways, after that i had to go to the ucm (told you i was gonna go there later in the month) because. you guessed it: the ucm predoc. i'm not gonna bore you with the details, but basically i had everything done and filled up, i just needed to sign and sent it to the entity. i couldn't do it online so - after calling and not receiving any answers - i printed everything, signed everything by hand and decided to deliver it in the registry office.

that's what i did, after the registry guy told me i should call the people who were in charge of all that process and calling - i shit you not - 6 different numbers until i got their approval. so that means it was done right? i've finished the process??? right???? lol. we'll come to that in the sequel <3

but yeah, the day was nice, it was super spring-y, and it's always great to go outside of the house so i liked it :)

Basically i think George isn’t super into costumes so the idea has to be reasonably low-key if you want to convince him. this one was perfect bc it really only involved wrestling the boy into a lab coat and attacking his hair with some extra strength hold gel (win win bc you get to have your hands in his hair and he gets to have your hands in his hair 😌) but the effect was still very much there. meanwhile you’re stuck hot glueing pipe cleaners and pom-poms to an umbrella to make a spaghetti and meatballs twister reference prop so your costume isn’t just a blue cardigan lol. george is very nice about the ugly ass homemade prop that you end up throwing in a skip after three drinks :3

Karl would basically be down for any Ghibli duo but this is the one i can see him pulling off (as much as i would die to see him in a howl pendragon wig). "The Burning Duo's on the way, everyone! Freshly debuted just earlier this spring, straight out of the No.1 hero's agency — look sharp! It's Temperance and Detonation!"

Right on cue, the blasts of the explosive hero heralded the arrival of the noisier, and more hotheaded of the two. The villain was suddenly on the ground. Any other partners-in-crime still walking paled, and not just from fear and the sweet, toxic smell of nitroglycerin — it was the icy snap of cold, freezing their skin to any surfaces they happened to touch.

"Annnd there we have it! All cleaned up, all in one swoop! And a very good job to our heroes!" The reporter scuttled her way over to where the two young heroes were binding up the petty criminals, ready to hand over to the police as soon as they caught up. “Temperance! Detonation!” She thrust the mic into their faces. “Mind telling us the secret behind your smooth teamwork? Our viewers would be very interested to know how you two work behind the scenes!” One eyed her coolly, looking absent-minded. The other had not even bothered to look over.

“Hm… we’re good friends,” Todoroki Shouto finally contributed. A waft of cool air drifted about his hair.

A loud ‘Tchk!’ sounded from behind them. Bakugou Katsuki finally deigned to look over sourly. “…We’re barely friends.” Any UA classmate of theirs may have gaped at the magnitude of Bakugou admitting such a thing. Todoroki glanced over at him, almost bewildered.

A beat passed where they looked at each other and the reporter awkwardly stood by, still holding up the mic, afraid to move it.

Todoroki was the first to move. “We work together Mondays to Saturdays, train together, and spend almost any free time together, I’d say that makes us very good friends.” He finally appeared to take notice of the mic mostly pointing at him and gingerly took it from the reporter, resigned that they would have to stay there to entertain the media while they waited.

Bakugou made another snappy sound in his throat. “And I’ve told you this before: time doesn’t equal friendship dumbass.” He marched up to Todoroki, snatching the mic from him while aggressively elbowing him away. “Tell this to the public.” He glared into the black eye of the camera. “We worked freakin’ hard to get here.”

* “I could tell you were trying really hard not to yell there,” Todoroki said, faint amusement glinting in his eyes.

“Shut up.” He was not staring.

“Good job on not blasting press equipment this time,” he continued, ignoring him. Last time, he’d yelled so loud that his decibel level overshot the limit. Present Mic had half-jokingly tweeted him about stealing his spotlight.

Katsuki turned away from him, walking ahead into their office. Their, their, them. Everywhere they went, they were a unit. Together.

He wanted to spit at the thought of it.

He could tolerate it. It was nothing.

Yet what was this itchy feeling that kept nagging at the back of his head these days?

The PR officer looked up from where she’d been consulting their notes. “There you are. Good job out there.” She got up, receiving a greeting from Todoroki. “I wanted to talk about today. So far the image you two have presented is as capable fighters, but today’s on-scene news have proved the public is hungry for more, especially of the relationship between you two.”

“What’s new,” Katsuki grumbled, tugging off his gauntlets.

She smiled. “Everyone seems to like seeing you two argue. It does give them hope that the two of you may be not just paired heroes.” She coughed diplomatically. “Soulmates.”

“Just come right out and say it,” he groaned. He pointed a finger at the frigid bastard who was carefully considering everything the damn PR was saying. “Bicker with him? Easiest thing in the world. What else have you lot come up with?”

“Nothing much, just act as naturally as you do and try to be actual friends.” She had the gall to wink at him. “Todoroki-kun here is always trying his best to be actual friends with you after all. Wouldn’t hurt to hang out more often, have fun together.”

“That’s not a bad idea,” Todoroki said, thumb on his chin. Was he brightening at the idea? Was that a hint of interest on the non-emotive bastard’s face? Ugh.

“We’ll leave you to it then,” the PR woman waved her file as she dismissed herself.

And then they were alone in the office and Katsuki did not appreciate it, not with the Half-n-half’s attention fully on him like that.

He tugged his mask out of the way, heading to his desk. Todoroki’s gaze was still solely fixated on him. “What.” He twitched, irritated.

Todoroki appeared to shake himself out of whatever fugue he’d fallen into. “I was trying to remember if you’ve ever done anything for fun. Do you?”

Katsuki stared at him. “Sure I do. Whenever I get to be alone.”

Todoroki’s gaze prodded him to say further. “And? That can’t be it?”

He growled, chafing. “Train. Walk. Jog. Parks. Mountains. What else do you want, huh?”

Todoroki’s face loomed out of the right corner of his eye as he came over to stand over Katsuki’s desk. “What about animals?”

Katsuki scrunched his nose in distaste. “What about them?”

“No allergies?” Todoroki kept pressing. He was distractingly close and Katsuki did not appreciate anyone leaning in too far his personal space.

He let Todoroki stay there anyway. There’s something wrong with him.

His pulse is not in the palms of his hands. If he’s sweaty, then maybe that’s why he’s letting the Thermostat venture nearer. He’s useful like that.

“No,” he snaps reluctantly.

He looks up at Todoroki sliding his phone towards him. There’s an image on it, a colourful flyer for… a cat cafe.

“Oh hell no-”

“Shinsou recommended it. So did Sero,” Todoroki says, tone as flat as ever, but there’s that note of question in it.

“I’m not going into a cutesy place like that, all they’ll serve is sweet food.” He says with a tone of finality, slamming down his paperwork for the day.

A beat of silence. But you’re not trying — how about the cats?

Katsuki looks up at the thought, because evidently the Thermostat hasn’t left. And he’s just opened his mouth to say the exact thought that popped into Katsuki’s head.

Oh gods help him, Todoroki is looking at him wih those slightly pleading eyes, that’s the most this emotionally-constipated bastard can manage, but Katsuki is just, suddenly weak.

It’s unbelievable. He’s nothing but stubborn as heck but this is what gets him weak?

“It better have good chow,” he threatens weakly.

Todoroki lights up.

Ugh, all this just to see that light curve to his lips.

“See you, Bakugou.” He says, finally leaving and taking his phone and his damn small smile with him.

Katsuki thinks again to all those times he’d caught himself staring at this too-good-looking-for-his-sanity bastard and locks it all away firmly. No. Just no. They can be friends, he tells himself.

(He’s not hoping what everyone says they must be.)

He could almost swear there had been that ghostly afterthought people swore up and down and all over the internet, that apparently, were the signs. Signs they had started to sync in thought.

Katsuki clenched his fist, where his pulse had been skittering like crazy earlier.

The pen shook in his hand.

Wasn’t he happy it might be him? It’s someone like Todoroki, a pro hero just like him. Someone who’s been by his side since the UA days. Someone who can keep up with him, someone who’s strong, and can give him a good fight anytime.

He could scrounge his head all he liked, but he knew he wouldn’t find the answer.

A laugh fills the air of the dimly lit room. A lightbulb flickers. “Are you for real… they couldn’t be more different from each other!”

Another voice joins in chirpily. It is the nonchalent drawl of a high-school girl eager for gossip. “Right~? They’re exactly like a prince and a beast!”

“Right… the fans are actually comparing them to that lovingly.” A chuckle follows the speaker as he leans his elbow further on the gilded surface of the wood.

A hum. Congratulations, Kacchan. And that Todoroki as well. He has been keeping track of them after all. Hard not to want to document the progress of the first quirk he’d ever studied. Feeling the eyes of others on him, he draws up a piqued eyebrow as well.

"You want to meet them, don't you?" Toga's leaning in now with that curious gleam in feline eyes, wide grin not too far from slitting her entire face. It is the look of someone who has scented blood.

"Ehhh," He plays along coquettishly, draws out the syllable. "I couldn't! They'd kick me out of the building, not like you who can sneak in anytime!"

"You totally could!" Toga refutes, sitting up. "You're sooooo good at acting after all! Go!"

"Not so much if you can see through me," He demurs with a laugh.

She pouts and drapes herself over the table, head bending to squint at him.

“You’re a liar, Deku-kun.”

Ah, that’s true. “I do my best,” he singsongs. A glance up and down her body. Good, no suction needles anywhere. Though, knowing her, there is at least one hidden blade on her person.

(As much as Toga makes it hard for him to truly sleep soundly at night, she’s still useful.

One of the sharpest blades in his disposal.

He’d be a fool if he couldn’t retain her loyalty. Loyal, loyal Toga, as long as he could keep her entertained, dancing on a blade’s edge from becoming her next victim.)

Toga picks up the topic again, prodding at him. “Don’t we have Manami-chan already through their records? You could totally mess them up anytime.”

This is when Dabi saunters over, light on his feet. He’s probably had enough of their high school girl-type talk. Though, Izuku supposes he is kind of one. A tenseness in his gait though. He can feel the restless energy roiling off him like a caged panther pacing. “Under Endeavour, huh,” he says, his words smouldering with that particular hatred he’s held for the Flame Hero all these years.

Toga sidles up next to him. “Hey, when are we going to kill another hero again, Deku-kun? I’m bored~”

They had been quiet for a while after all.

Dabi’s stare bores through him like the blue flames he manipulates. Yes, yes he knows.

He smiles.

Time to put that plan into action then.

* Shouto sighs a long breath, watching it form white in the night air. It’s been a long day — of patrolling, emergency response, PR response — and he’d finally wrangled Bakugou into going out. For fun. It’s like Bakugou doesn’t know what that concept is, overachiever that he is. Not that Shouto has a much better idea himself, growing up like he had.

He’s looking forward to getting into his apartment. And sinking into a long bath. He’s not going to look at his phone for a good long while.

Shadows crisscross the path before him from lampposts. And then he sees a stutter in the image.

He hears the thud before he feels it. Someone's tripped into him.

“Ah, I’m sorry!” Vibrant green eyes look up at him, panicked. He sees the flash of them in the night and is momentarily sidetracked.

What was that feeling? A thrum, like a line cast into the night.

A flutter of pages. He dropped his files, just coming from behind him. So there was another office worker that had worked till this late at night.

He bends down to help the stooped figure. "It's alright." He picks up a paper and sees the headline on it. "Ah, so you also work here."

"Y-yes!" The young man squeaks, appearing too taken aback to make eye contact with him. "I'm just one of the many paper pushers in there, ahaha. So sorry, ah, thank you," he says meekly upon taking Shouto's handful.

They stand, and Shouto watches with a tad resignation as the young man starts, the glint of recognition in his eyes turning into full panic. “T-todoroki—! Temperance! I’m honoured.” His hands fumble, unsure whether to go for a handshake, and he looks like he’s about to drop his folders again so Shouto reaches in to steady the grip for him.

Their fingers brush against one another’s, and the young man looks fit to faint.

There is a flush on his face that Shouto is convinced only appears on fever patients.

“Are you alright?” He asks, concerned. Freckles dot pale cheeks, and he feels compelled to observe this person further.

“Thank you,” the young man says shyly. A small smile forms as he finally makes eye contact with him. “I’ll be good after a good night’s sleep.”

He looks like he needs it. There are shadows underneath his eyes. “Rest well then.” A tug in his throat. Shouto follows, curious. “Your name?”

“Oh! I’m… Midoriya Izuku.” A blink, and Shouto could have sworn there was an amused look in his eyes just now.

“Then, see you, Midoriya.” Shouto begins to walk again, expecting Midoriya to also be going the same way as him. It is the main road after all.

He does not. He turns back to see Midoriya tip his head at him, smiling genially. The electric light catches the top of his hair, giving it a green shine. “See you soon, Todoroki Shouto.”

He turns on his heel, and melts into the shadows.

* Stark midday. Clocks strike twelve, digital figures switch to 12:00, and then the screens of Tokyo freeze into black. It’s everywhere — live feeds, main TV channels, ads milling by — all superseded by a strange blackness.

Within the metropolis, citizens wonder if it’s a blackout.

All is still for a moment.

But then, a warped voice speaks. A masked face steps out, bowing to the camera. “Greetings, everyone.” Green subtitles scroll underneath.

When they straighten up, only the lower part of their face is visible. It is a bandanna wrapped around their chin, with a feral, toothy grin on it. “We apologise for the rude interruption, but we doubt your current system would let you listen to us without some… drastic measures.” The figure puts up a hand, waving it in the air lightly.

“Let me ask you, citizens… what is justice to you? What is a true hero? Is it what we have now? Where our top heroes are picked based on popularity stats?

We will be revealing our next operation in 24 hours. Stay tuned.”

And with that, the black screen zaps out with a flash, and all broadcasts are back to normal.

What was that? The media ask, shaken.

* Tsukauchi calls them in , grim-faced. "How much do you know of the villain Deku?"

Silence. Todoroki is clearly confused.

It is as if a vice had slammed down in his throat. "Deku?" He hears himself echo, almost hoarse. A name he had not heard in years. A name he had pushed out of his mind, only just able to open a door to childhood memory.  Yes, he'd wondered what'd happened to the nerd at times, especially whenever he passed by the neighbourhood.

(No, it can't be him.

(Not Shitty Deku who dreamed bigger than anyone. Whose dreams would have gotten him killed.)

He'd never once dropped in. Sometimes his mum mentioned bumping into her at some sales or such, and asked him about Deku, but he'd always end up snapping that he had no word.

"Pity, you two used to be such good friends," she'd sigh after she'd boxed his ears. "Inko does look like she's getting... " She hesitated, unsure how to put it. "Tireder."

He's snapped back into the present by Tsukauchi's look of sympathy at him.

“In one of his first calls with a head of state, President Trump fawned over Russian President Vladimir Putin, telling the man who ordered interference in America’s 2016 election that he was a great leader and apologizing profusely for not calling him sooner.”

He pledged to Saudi officials in another call that he would help the monarchy enter the elite Group of Seven, an alliance of the world’s leading democratic economies.”

“He promised the president of Peru that he would deliver to his country a C-130 military cargo plane overnight, a logistical nightmare that set off a herculean scramble in the West Wing and Pentagon.”

“And in a later call with Putin, Trump asked the former KGB officer for his guidance in forging a friendship with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un — a fellow authoritarian hostile to the United States.”

“Starting long before revelations about Trump’s interactions with Ukraine’s president rocked Washington, Trump’s phone calls with foreign leaders were an anxiety-ridden set of events for his aides and members of the administration, according to former and current officials. They worried that Trump would make promises he shouldn’t keep, endorse policies the United States long opposed, commit a diplomatic blunder that jeopardized a critical alliance or simply pressure a counterpart for a personal favor.”

“There was a constant undercurrent in the Trump administration of [senior staff] who were genuinely horrified by the things they saw that were happening on these calls,” said one former White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private conversations. “Phone calls that were embarrassing, huge mistakes he made, months and months of work that were upended by one impulsive tweet.”

“But Trump’s July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky went beyond whether the leader of the free world had committed a faux pas, and into grave concerns, he had engaged in a possible crime or impeachable offense. The release last week of a whistleblower complaint alleging Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rivals as well as the release of a rough transcript of the July call led to House Democrats launching an impeachment inquiry against Trump.”

“The Ukraine controversy has put a renewed focus on Trump’s un­or­tho­dox way of interacting with fellow world leaders in diplomatic calls. Critics, including some former administration officials, contend that Trump’s behavior on calls with foreign leaders has at times created unneeded tensions with allies and sent troubling signals to adversaries or authoritarians that the United States supports or at least does not care about human rights or their aggressive behavior elsewhere in the world.”

“Joel Willett, a former intelligence officer who worked at the National Security Council from 2014 to 2015, said he was concerned both by the descriptions of a president winging it, and the realization that the president’s behavior disturbs and frightens career civil servants.”

“What a burden it must be to be stuck between your position of trust in the White House and another obligation you may feel to the American people to say something,” he said. The White House did not respond to a request for comment Thursday or Friday.”

“Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), a Trump ally, said the president speaks his mind and diverges from other presidents who follow protocol. Graham said he saw nothing distressing in the president’s July 25 call with Zelensky and said he expected it to be worse, partially given his own experience with Trump on the phone.”

“If you take half of my phone calls with him, it wouldn’t read as cleanly and nicely,” he said, adding that the president sounded like a “normal person.”

“This story is based on interviews with 12 former or current officials with knowledge of the president’s foreign calls. These officials had direct involvement in the calls, were briefed on them or read the transcripts afterward. All spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the president’s private conversations with world leaders.”

“The first call Trump made that set off alarm bells came less than two weeks after his inauguration. On Jan. 28, Trump called Putin for what should have been a routine formality: accepting a foreign leader’s congratulations. Former White House officials described Trump as “obsequious” and “fawning,” but said he also rambled off into different topics without any clear point, while Putin appeared to stick to formal talking points for a first official exchange.”

“He was like, ‘Oh my gosh, my people didn’t tell me you wanted to talk to me,’ ” said one person with direct knowledge of the call.”

“Trump has been consistently cozy with authoritarian leaders, sparking anxiety among aides about the solicitous tones he struck with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Putin.”

“We couldn’t figure out early on why he was being so nice to Russia,” one former senior administration official said. H.R. McMaster, the president’s then-national security adviser, launched an internal campaign to get Trump to be more skeptical of the Russians. Officials expressed surprise in both of his early Putin calls at why he was so friendly.”

  “In another call, in April 2017, Trump told Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who had overseen a brutal campaign that has resulted in the extrajudicial killings of thousands of suspected drug dealers, that he was doing an “unbelievable job on the drug problem.”

“Trump’s personal goals seeped into calls. He pestered Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for help in recommending him for a Nobel Prize, according to an official familiar with the call. “People who could do things for him — he was nice too,” said one former security official. “Leaders with trade deficits, strong female leaders, members of NATO — those tended to go badly.”

“Aides bristled at the dismissive way he sometimes addressed longtime U.S. allies, especially women. In a summer 2018 call with Prime Minister Theresa May, Trump harangued the British leader about her country’s contribution to NATO. He then disputed her intelligence community’s conclusion that Putin’s government had orchestrated the attempted murder and poisoning of a former Russian spy on British soil.”

“Trump was totally bought into the idea there was credible doubt about the poisoning,” said one person briefed on the call. “A solid 10 minutes of the conversation is spent with May saying it’s highly likely and him saying he’s not sure.”

“Trump would sometimes make commitments to foreign leaders that flew in the face of U.S. policy and international agreements, as when he told a Saudi royal that he would support their country’s entry into the G-7.”

“The G-7 is supposed to be the allies with whom we share the most common values and the deepest commitment to upholding the rules-based order,” the former official said.”

“Russia was kicked out of the group in 2014 for violating international law when it invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea. Trump has publicly advocated for Russia to be allowed back in. Saudi Arabia, which oppresses women and has a record of human rights abuses, wasn’t a fit candidate for membership, the former official said.”

“Saudi Arabia was not admitted to the group. Calls with foreign leaders have often been highly orchestrated events in past administrations.”

“When I was at the White House, there was a very deliberative process of the president absorbing information from people who had deep substantive knowledge of the countries and relationships with these leaders. Preparation for these calls was taken very seriously,” Willett said. “It appears to be freestyle and ad-libbed now.”

“Trump has rejected much of the protocol and preparation associated with foreign calls, even as his national security team tried to establish goals for each conversation.”

“Instead, Trump often sought to use calls as a way to befriend whoever he was talking to, one current senior administration official said, defending the president. “So he might say something that sounds terrible to the outside, but in his mind, he’s trying to build a relationship with that person and sees flattery as the way to do it.”

“The president resisted long briefings before calls or reading in preparation, several former officials said. McMaster, who preferred providing the president with the information he could use to make decisions, resigned himself to giving Trump small notecards with bulleted highlights and talking points.”

“You had two to three minutes max,” said one former senior administration official. “And then he was still usually going to say whatever he wanted to say.”

“As a result, staff fretted that Trump came across ill-informed in some calls, and even oafish. In a conversation with China’s Xi, Trump repeated numerous times how much he liked a kind of chocolate cake, one former official said. The president publicly described the dessert the two had in April 2017 when Trump and Xi met at the president’s Mar-a-Lago resort as “the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake you have ever seen.”

“Trump preferred to make calls from the residence, which frustrated some NSC staff and West Wing aides who wanted to be on hand to give the president real-time advice. If he held the call in the Oval Office, aides would gather around the desk and pass him notes to try to keep the calls on point. On a few occasions, then-Chief of Staff John F. Kelly muted the call to try to get the president back on track, two officials said.”

“Tim O’Brien, a Trump biographer, and critic, said the calls fit Trump’s style as a business leader. “When he had to get on calls with investors on a publicly-traded company, they had to worry that he would break securities laws and lie about the company’s profits,” O’Brien said. “When he would go and meet with regulators with the casino control commission, his lawyers were always worried under oath, in a public setting, that he would say something that would be legally damaging.”

“Though calls with foreign leaders are routinely planned in advance, Trump a few times called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron unannounced as if they were friends, a former administration official said.”

“After some early summaries of Trump calls with the leaders of Mexico and Australia leaked to the press in 2017, the White House tightened restrictions on who could access the transcripts and kept better track of who had custody of copies. For example, Vice President Pence still received a courtesy copy of any foreign-leader call, but his staff now had to sign off when they transported it to his office and also sign off when they returned or destroyed the document.”

“Some former officials said that over time staff became used to the oddity of some calls even if they still found them troubling.”

“People had gotten really numb to him blurting out something he shouldn’t have,” one former national security staffer remarked.”

“But officials who had served in the White House through the end of 2018 were still shocked by the whistleblower complaint about the effort to “lockdown” records of Trump’s July 25 call. The complaint said White House officials ordered the transcript moved into a highly secure computer system, known as NICE, which is normally reserved only for information about the most sensitive code-word-level intelligence programs.”

“Unheard of,” said one former official who handled foreign calls. “That just blew me away.”

i think youre right that both the gcs saying "he can just dress less fem to avoid the problem" and the person saying "how could you look at this person and think theyre male" are both idiots, none of those really get to the heart of the problem and just blame the other group for the issue at hand which is: public sex-segregated bathrooms tend to be unfriendly places to gnc people of either sex because they force you to very openly "pick a side" to identify with and most people (cis, trans, gc or libgendered alike) have insane, fucked up, misogyny induced ideas abt what being a woman or a man means. and any deviancy from those ideas get you much more closely scrutinized in them than most other public spaces bc they are specifically branded as "private room for women only" and "private room for men only" and you are expected to (primarily) look and (less important but still relevant) act the part. i think thats why you also see how specific forms of violence reproduce in them like. the way mens bathrooms are more physically threatening to gnc men and the way womens bathrooms are a minefield of evil negative psychic energy attacks on gnc women (those are the socially accepted forms of rejection in groups of men against deviant men and groups of women against deviant women. you also see typical male v. women violence in cases of male creeps abusing wokeness to get into womens bathrooms lol)
