I also try to grasp of the situation, what I understand is:
KS and Oly committee made a trial and gave her a 3year suspension, for both the drink and assault.
Both drink and assault are allegations (this means legally requires more investigation, these two cases could not be 100% facts, so let's hold our horses cause it's kinda obvious ksu and other media are sensationalizing all three skaters cases, more information will come out soon.)
This leads me to believe, ks and oly committee made a speedy trial and gave penalties to the skaters based on allegations (legally meaning the cases required more investigation cause yes you need more context and to know the motives), so rightly haein's legal representation will seek retrial and aims for leniency. (I'm not sure about the way they will go about it: "this was a mutual attempt to retry being together, young lady was blinded by love and didn't know how to handle the situation, no bad intentions, he was also in love with her, he isn't mature enough for this relationship so why did he try to be with her again, it's both their fault" well... we'll see how that goes, I literally don't know)
This is a morality case, not a pedophilic one. Age gap issues in romantic relationships among teen lovers is normal (to some cultures at least) (even though I don't personally like it, still I understand. Where I come from it's rare but you will encounter this one 17yo teen who has 3years younger gf and though most of us agree this is kinda ew, still no one does a thing and even their parents know, you hear them say: but they're both teens, which it's technically true and okay...then he turns 18 and she's 15 and we all know they're still together... I wonder how these dynamic works...is she/he less mature? Is she/he more mature? What are the boundaries like? To my experience, these relationships don't last but it's the first time I see it going on trial like this so I'm about to learn something new)
In my opinion, so far, it's mostly on haein's fault cause I expect an adult to protect others and be wiser with their decisions, I'm glad she's addressing the issue and apologising and accepting the verdict. I think her legal team will claim he was a willing participant though.
I believe both are good people and good people make mistakes too, hold them accountable but let them learn from thes and move on, because people can and do change.
I do believe this is a bit of modern Romeo and Juliet: they love each other and want to be together but their families don't want that. So they're together in secret, both consent to these.
For what I read so far (I bet I'll change my opinion later for sure), it's clear what's haein fault, we don't need Sherlock Holmes here, but I worry that his family found out and they are the ones after her so his side seems heavily influenced to me. I think this cause he has feelings and wanted a relationship and cause of some translations that had me confused,so... they say he did voice his discomfort, he walked away, didn't like their contact so he asked to stop seeing each other ect. (He did the right thing and protected himself!) And then the translation says he was in shock, he's treating his trauma(not specified) with help of psychiatrist and then the translator adds that it sounds off to them and it probably means therapy but I think "is it or it isn't psychiatrist?" Yes, I think it matters. No one should doubt this has affected him and he seeks help, we assume most people would choose therapy, but I wonder what if he has other more serious conditions that already require a psychologist and no it's even bigger of a shock?or is just something his family is using and exaggerating to fight her?
I read, he can ask for leniency for her.
Also... this case sounds more like sexual misconduct and less of sexual assault/harassment and again, not sure cause of the translations so I think it's more safe for me to wait and not lean heavily on any sides, just general observations and be open to almost everyone's view.
I think what's key here is that both skaters have different understanding and view of their statu. For ex. She thinks they were 100%together, while he is half way there.
Today I read, that there's little room for leniency but I think that's just to create impressions for when they will receive leniency. I hate sensationalision so much.
To me, I have also big issue with the skater who took photos... I don't know if it's creepy or for gossip... Is it for personal use? do you share it with other weirdos? how many people knew and why is this amusing to them?
My brain cannot process what the assault claim and drinking situation among the Korean skaters are turning into.
So Haein Lee is actually the skater accused of assault on a minor but turns out they were dating last year when BOTH minors, broke up because of their parents, and got back together in secret?
She requested a retrial. As well as the skater who took "offensive" pics of her, though we don't know who they are.
So. Who came forward with these sexual assault accusations? Was it her boyfriend? He came into her dorm and their issue with him is a guy entering a girls room 🫥
They never mentioned skater c came forward with it so did they just discover a legal girl with an underage boy and call it sexual assault? Nowhere is it mentioned skater C (so, the boyfriend) accused skater A (so, Haein Lee) of sexual assault and that's where I'm deeply confused.

2011 Indian GP
So both championships have been won already but here is round 17 nonetheless. Is Lewis feeling better?
I'm just fast forwarding DC, Jake and Jordan being tourists. Did we ever ah. I was just about to ask if we’d ever had an Indian GP before and Jake confirms it's the first one. We haven't had many since have we? Yeah, Wikipedia tells me it was only held 3 times.
Quali report. Ah. A Williams crashed or something and Lewis didn't slow down as the marshals were getting the car. (to be clear : no marshal was on the track at the time but on the grass beside the track and metres away from Lewis but still, not okay, against the rules anyway.) Because of this he received a 3 place grid penalty. It's super weird the volume is too low for me to hear the voice-over properly. I think Jenson is 4th and Alonso is 3rd. The Ferraris had issues with vibrating front wings. Also Massa broke his suspension on his last run and hit the barriers. He's 6th. Lewis was 2nd on his final try but of course he had that penalty so he's 5th. He's happy with his performance but bitter about the penalty which he deems unfortunate but hey. You slow down when there are marshals on track, that's a basic rule. That makes Webber 2nd. And guess who's on pole, for a change?
So yeah the Ferraris are sporting flexing front wings, which actually aren't allowed anymore I believe? Yes. There was controversy about it in 2021, remember? Mercedes believed RedBull's rear wings flexed too much. Article 3.8 of the technical regs states that all aero components must be "rigidly secured to the entirely sprung part of the car" and "remain immobile in relation to the sprung part of the car". Anyway.
They're getting ready to race in Austin for the first time too. And people are wearing black armbands because Dan Wheldon and Marco Simoncelli died in racing accidents the two previous weekends.
For some reason Lewis has a Bob Marley helmet.
Rowan Atkinson is there and he's always been a McLaren fan. He believes Lewis is feeling better than he has in months so he's optimistic. Of course Martin Brundle jumps on the occasion and asks about him because they've seen him unhappy lately as we know. Atkinson says he's not privy to his thoughts but he's found him reflective, but as in a good reflection not a depressive one. He believes his future is bright.
And on the grid there's an issue with Alonso's front wing.
We're told Lewis said earlier in the week he wanted to "remove all the distractions" next year and we see him hugging Anthony.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jake says they haven't seen much of that in the last year. Jordan believes he needs his family's love at the moment. Mmmh.
And the track is again a double DRS track.
We hear Alonso's wing is fixed.
Formation lap.
And they're racing!
Good start for both RedBulls. Alonso pushes Jenson aside and then goes very deep so he loses his position to him anyway. Massa overtakes Lewis. There's contact at the back and two cars can't make the turn. And then one hits someone as he joins back. More contact with someone else out. Trulli. Yellow flags as Jenson is wheel to wheel with Webber in the front. And Jenson is through! And that's lap one.
The marshals are evacuating a car. Someone lost their wing in the pitlane. Timo Glock is DNF and Kobayashi too.
It seems the tyres have a very low degradation rate here so we're looking at long stints. Webber is now struggling to pass Jenson even with the DRS, just like in Korea, except at the time it was Lewis. Oh Jenson locked up. Ooooooof it's close. They almost touched. Jenson pushed him wide slightly. Lewis is weirdly slow.
Oop Maldonado is out.
17 laps in, Alonso and Webber pit, the McLaren mechanics are out too. It's for Lewis. Webber comes out in front of Schumacher while Alonso is behind, he must be fuming lol. Massa also pits. He's just behind Alonso. Alonso tries to overtake Schumacher with the DRS but even though he's coming up to him Schumacher stays ahead, who knows where he found the speed. But on the second try it's a done deal. Jenson pits in reaction to Webber's pace on new tyres. He's still second. Alright let's see. 20 laps in, it’s Vettel who hasn't stopped, Jenson, Webber, Alonso, Massa, Lewis. Nothing has changed lol. Ah here we go, Seb comes in. Now we hear Lewis is doing much better on these tyres.
This race is boring.
Now Lewis is catching Massa as he runs wide. He's 0.3 seconds behind. OH NO. He went on the inside and Massa turned on him. And they made contact! God, Massa is not gonna be happy about this, he keeps saying Lewis is not using his head and they've made contact a lot in the last few races. But honestly he didn't leave him any room there. Massa spun and Lewis went wide. They both rejoin the track. Lewis has damage to his front wing
OH LMAO ATKINSON
Tumblr media
Lewis pits then. DC and Brundle believe it wasn't a completely clean pass. I don't know. I believe it was ambitious of him but also Massa had the room to move out of the way and Lewis didn't. Massa is ahead now but he runs wide. He's struggling. He probably has damage. Lewis is 9th after his stop. Oh. Buemi has an engine failure, it's smoking heavily. Of course Lewis and Massa are under investigation.
On the radio Lewis obviously says Massa turned in on him. But Massa will say the opposite thing I guess. DC thinks it shouldn't be a penalty, it wasn't malicious, he was trying to be strategic. I agree. Brundle is on the fence but he believes Lewis will get a drive-through.
Lewis fights Alguersuari for 8th as we hit the midrace mark. Oh! Surprisingly they penalised Massa for the incident? I didn't even consider that as a possibility. That's severe. Lewis passed Alguersuari and now the next car is Massa, after his drive-through. Tense. Oh but he pits. From what I understand the flexing front wing over flexes when the car gets lighter (so : faster) and it became a safety issue to the point they had to change it mid race lol. You understand why there's a rule against them nowadays. Oh and now his suspension broke. He's out. It might have been the contact with Lewis or him hitting a curb just now.
Lewis is 7th behind Schumacher. We're almost two thirds done. Alonso pits from 3rd, he's out in front of Webber. Massa is seen walking to the Ferrari HQ with his helmet still on which tells you everything you need to know. I thought Webber would overtake Alonso but he's losing time given the new tyres. In any case just so you know there's 5 seconds between Seb and Jenson and then 35 seconds to Alonso.
Lewis pits on lap 46. Jenson pits on lap 47. Lewis might get lapped by Seb but he will probably pit immediately. Yeah he does. 10 laps to go now. Nothing is going on. Or maybe down the field idk.
It's the end of the race!
Seb wins, followed by Jenson and Alonso. Lewis is 7th.
Tumblr media
...... Yeah. That didn't cheer Lewis up. His eyes are dark and he's very serious.
Tumblr media
He doesn't have much to say. It's a disappointing day and he's “very, very, very” sorry for his team.
Tumblr media
They worked very hard all weekend as always and they deserved a better result. He doesn't know what else to say. Oh.
Tumblr media
He says Felipe hasn't spoken to him in a long long time but they were standing next to each other during the minute of silence before the race so he made an effort to shade him with his umbrella and wish him good luck for the race but in the race he tried to overtake but it didn't look like he would give him any space and they collided. He's just really, really sorry for his team.
Lee Mackenzie says we've heard him ask about potential damage to his car and did he feel something or was he just checking? He says he felt vibrations and he had very poor performance "but the car looks fine so maybe it's just me". Lee says she knows he was hoping for a strong weekend, what is he going to do before the next race? He answers “fly home and try to get his head back in the game”.
Tumblr media
The track was great and they were very well received here so he's grateful for that.
Tumblr media
Oh you know what actually, here's an interesting piece of information about this season. I was curious about Jordan repeatedly mentioning Lewis' hug with his father before the race and saying he needs more of that. This is actually Lewis' first year in F1 after firing his father as his manager. It might explain some of the mood, as it was a really hard time and caused a notoriously big rift between them.

The Fear of the Dragonwitch (Triplets RoLoRem AU) Chapter 4!!!
Word Count: 3536
TW: Swearing, hospitals, anesthesia, Remus, Deceit, homophobia talked about, there’s a threat at the end that is a bit violent and inappropriate but its from Remus so like meh.
Notes: This one wraps up the hospital bit with Lo and moves on to the uh, happiest character arc, which is Remus’. It’s pretty cute honestly, There’s a bunch of venting on his part because of the whole Logan thing. But it has a funny ending and he gets to do a happy so like yay! Last chapter here, first one here, I hope you enjoy!
Pairings: Receipt. (receit or demus)
Summary: “This is not ok and if I have to make sure those kids end up in jail before my son goes back to school I will. …sir I'm a lawyer” Logan recovers slowly but surely, but hes still in denial of all that has happened, making it out to be less than it is. Remus thinks its bullshit, and he needs a break; something Damián is completely willing to do. Will the tension between the two snap or will it bloom into something they’ve both wanted for longer than words can describe?
“yeah no I'm sorry sir, but this is not ok and if I have to make sure those kids end up in jail before my son goes back to school I will. …sir I'm a lawyer, I very much know what my rights are, and I have grounds to sue your school. You have two options, you expel the students who assaulted my son and his partner, or I press charges on them for attempted murder and your school for discrimination and failure to keep your duty to assist. I can tell you what would be easier for you to do, and cheaper by a long shot.”
Logan was in a hospital bed. The nurse was finishing setting his new cast as his brothers sat on either side of him. Mimi sat next to Remus, who was crying into her chest, trying to muffle himself as their mom paced while on the phone with the school. She covered the speaker of her phone for a minute, looking to the nurse.
“I don’t know if you know this, but how much would this and all subsequent visits for his injuries cost if we didn’t have insurance?”
“um, well a cast alone without surgery is about 2500, and there would be two normal check ins after so for that I’d say 2940 for that route if you had done it, for the surgery it would be 17,350 alone, I think you'd get out with around 20000 spent on it.”
“thanks! Yeah, so are you ready to do what's right?”
She went back to the call, apparently reaching an agreement as she soon got off the call and leaned against the wall, releasing a breath she had been holding. Logan was groggy. They had just been in surgery and they had put him under, no matter how much it panicked him. The surgery went well apparently, they were keeping him overnight though, mostly for his other wounds. They had noticed the bruises on his chest and legs and were keeping diagnostics to make sure his ribs weren’t broken, or his legs fractured. They had told him he would miss the rest of the week to really recover properly. Eventually it got to be late and the family was asked to leave for the night, save for a parent if need be. Vivian and Mimi both had to go, and all of them gave Logan a gentle hug before stepping away.
He reached haphazardly for his phone, dialing Patton on instinct. It answered on the first ring.
“Logan? Hi Hun, are you ok? What's wrong? Do I need to come help you out of something? Are you even more hurt?”
“I'm- I'm fine pat. At the hospital right now actually, just got out of surgery and got my cast set.”
“oh Logan! Oh, I'm so sorry you're so hurt!”
“meh it’s no big deal. How are you doing?”
“I'm good. every once in a while, I’ll move the wrong way and remember my ribs are bruised, but I'm icing myself, and I'm feeling better already.”
“heh, me too, but I think that’s probably the anesthetics. Mom and Mimi had to go, I'm stuck here for the night, do you mind staying on call with me until I go to sleep?”
“of course not sweetheart.”
The next few days are rather uneventful. After he gets home, he spends most of the day in bed. Mimi brings him his meals and makes sure that he's ok. He feels bad that she's staying home from work for him, but he can’t really convince her not to; as much as he hated it, he was clumsy and really bad at doing most mundane things he could normally do. It was infuriating at first, but he got used to it rather quickly. By the time the next school week begins, he's ready and outside 10 minutes earlier than usual. He tries to start the car. He tries again. He drops his keys. He gets frustrated, picking them up and finally starting the car. He sets his hands on the wheel and realizes the true problem. He flexes his right set of fingers. The cast is too bulky. He can’t wrap his hand around the wheel. He face plants on the wheel in compliance. He steps out and moves to the passenger seat. When Roman and Remus step out, they're surprised to see him out of the driver’s seat. They pop open his door with a questioning glance. He sighs.
“my cast is too big. Can’t wrap my hand around the wheel.”
Roman and Remus share a look. Remus steps over to the driver side, waiting for Roman to get in before hesitantly heading to school.
This time it’s different. Remus and Roman don’t split off to their own groups. They aren’t quite guard dogs, but they definitely pose a threatening image. They get stares and Logan hides in his flannel, hoping to disappear. Remus grits his teeth and is glaring at anyone who looks too long. When Virgil and Patton get in their sights, Virgil's already running over. Patton is following at a jog.
“oh my god L, what did those bastards do to you?”
“meh, broke my wrist, covered me in bruises, you know, the usual. In 2 months, it'll be like it never happened.”
He heard a pop and a scrape against concrete. When he turns around, Remus is walking away and Roman is looking after him and then over to Patton and Virgil.
“can you make sure Logan stays out of trouble please?”
With a nod from them both, he dashes after Remus. When he catches up, Remus is fuming. His fists are clenched and shaking and the grit in his teeth is like cement. Roman rushes in front of him to stop him.
“rem, you need to calm down-”
“he thinks this is funny.”
“what? What do you mean?”
“Logan. He thinks this is a joke. He brushes it off like it’s a scrape, Roman he almost died. He almost died and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything. Do you understand how absolutely terrifying that is? And he thinks it’s just some inconvenience! What would we do without him Ro? Mom may have made sure those kids were kicked out of the school, but they live here. What if they try it again to finish the job? What if there's more kids like them lining up to see him dead because of the person he loves? What does that mean for us? For me? if I was publicly out, would this have happened to me? how do we keep ourselves safe? How do we keep each other safe?”
“I-I don’t know. I- he wasn’t, he wasn’t the one targeted, tech-technically. I-I think they both were just, uh, too-too gay, I think? Eas-easy target? I don’t think anyone’s gonna try anything I think we’ll be fine we just need to calm down. freaking out won’t help any of us. We just- we gotta just cope. That’s all we can do.”
Remus’ fists shook more until they stopped and fell open. He bowed his head and one of his hands instinctively scratched at his neck, ignoring the tears falling from his eyes. He nods wordlessly, wiping his eyes before walking to his friends. Roman stood still for a moment. He wondered how his family had won the lottery on unstable emotions before going to the theatre room, hopefully his safe space would help him relax.
Remus sulked back to the parking lot of the school, smiling a bit seeing his friends looking back at him from next to Damián’s motorcycle. Toby and Remy were giggling, and he saw Damián shove Remy hard enough to knock him on his ass without even looking at him. Remy, true to his nature, continued to laugh. By the time he actually reached them, their giggles had died off for the most part. Damián flashed him a crooked grin and wrapped him in a sort of side hug which Remus quickly turned into a full one, bouncing a bit, throwing a smile on because he was happy now, right? He let him go and Damián stared him in the eyes unspeaking for a moment before the heterochromatic eyes took a worried form and he reached up to Remus’ cheek, wiping some stray tears away. He fixed him another look before letting go.
“what happened re? do I have to kill someone?”
“what? No, it’s just-”
Remus crossed his arms and looked pointedly away from him. He mumbled something out into his hair and tapped his fingers. Damián sent a glare and Remus sighed.
“my brother was put in the hospital last week.”
“what? Wait, you're fucking kidding, is that why you left early last week? Wait wait, was he the one who was attacked in the halls? Holy shit, why didn’t you tell me?”
“it was, I don’t know, I was worried you were going to like, do something. I almost got suspended for protecting him, and with your record I was worried you would get expelled. My mom had to threaten legal action towards the school to reverse my suspension.”
Damián’s eyes went wide, then fell soft. He reached to scratch at his face and nodded.
“yeah, yeah I imagine I would get expelled for murder. But that was last week, you seemed fine the next day, what's happened since?”
“he- my brother isn't taking it seriously. He hasn’t taken it seriously at all. He just, he tried to go back to class the same day because he was worried he would be marked as ditching. He's joking that its fine and it'll just disappear in a couple months and its infuriating! My brother was attacked with his partner because they're both gay and because Patton is genderfluid. If that could happen, what could happen to me or Roman? What could happen to other out LGBT students? Those kids almost got away without any penalties, they still only got expelled, what if they find us and try it again? Damián, my brother could have died, and now so many people are in danger and he doesn’t think it’s anything more than an inconvenience!!!”
Damián stayed quiet and looked thoughtful. He looked back at Remus and let out a breath before starting to speak again.
“I understand why you're upset re. I really do, but unfortunately, both you and your brother are on the schools watchlist now. I overheard the students in the fight were originally going to be suspended, and that means that staff is watching you both and waiting for you guys to mess up, so they have grounds to actually go through with the suspension. You need to be… good I guess, for lack of a better word. Most of your worries, though valid, are unrealistic. You're gonna be ok, so are your brothers. I can’t help make your brother fully realize his mortality, but that’s really an issue he needs to deal with. No one can help him with that.”
Remus nodded, already feeling better; hearing Damián expel his fears always helped him relax. Remy and toby had guilty expressions, they both patted Damián on the shoulder and gave Remus a short hug and did a special handshake before heading out, trying not to get too involved in their personal business. Damián then looked back at him, looking as if he had more to say, and he encouraged him with a smile.
“look, you seem stressed, and you sound like you're a little frustrated with your siblings, how about I take you out for a night? You'd get a chance to decompress, plus, I heard they opened a new sushi joint downtown, and its supposed to be high class good shit. What do you say?”
Remus fought to keep his face under control, his cheeks wanted to redden, and he wasn’t quite ok with that. He smiled wide though, hugging him tightly. When he released him, he still had the smile on his face.
“I’ll have to pass the keys off to Roman, but yeah! That sounds great dee!!!”
The bell sounds and Remus turns to look at the school, turning back quickly with a smile as he heads off to class. Damián stalls a bit, watching him sprint to class with a smile. He shoves off of his motorcycle and strolls to the gate, getting inside right as the staff was shutting them.
The final bell of the day rings and releases Remus from his infernal English class. He had packed up 5 minutes ago, excited for spending time with Damián. He was the first one out of the door, sprinting towards the parking lot, ignoring the world as he fell into a giddy trance. He reached the lot after Damián, whose class is right next to the gates. Damián was holding his helmet out with a grin, handing it to Remus, who put it on with a little effort to manage his hair. Damián hopped onto his bike and bid Remus do the same.
“you remember how to ride right?”
“mhmm!”
Once he got his balance, he wrapped his arms around Damián’s middle, feeling the blush rise in his cheeks involuntarily. He was glad the helmet hid his face. He peeked his head over Damián's shoulder to indicate that he was ready.
They were downtown soon; Remus was half wondering if they were speeding the whole way. Damián parked and took the helmet, setting it on the bike, before shoulder bumping Remus and walking to the door of the sushi spot. They went in and it looked futuristic, blue neon lights and black walls, a pond in the front area, and the booths looked like they were in little secluded bamboo rooms. It wasn’t dinner rush yet, so they were seated immediately. They both ordered a total of 5 rolls each and just chatted.
Remus jumped in excitement when he remembered the new drawings he had made, pulling his sketchbook out of his backpack. Damián just smiled and sipped at his bottle of ginger ale. Remus set his book on the table, flipping past some of his older drawings and to his newest ones. There were some silly doodles around the edge of the page, but in the center was a hauntingly gorgeous drawing of a wendigo, its horns cracked and chipped, it was mangled in a painful position. It had deep wounds and weapons sticking through it at certain spots. It looked weirdly realistic. Damián was in awe at all the hyper realism Remus put in his art. When Remus turned the page, Damián wasn’t really expecting an in depth drawing of him. It was a side perspective of him in a desk at school, leant forward over it, hiding his phone as he looked forwards. He gaped at it, seeing the depth in the wrinkles in his leather jacket, the sense of blurred light emitting from the phone, the shadows cast over him, his small patch of vitiligo that crept up his neck, everything in such loving detail. He took the sketch pad and looked closer, seeing little details he had missed at first, his terrible freckles, the detail in his hair, the discolored spots that were on some patches of his jacket from being old and worn. He looked up at Remus who had the audacity to look sheepish and red, or rather, purple in the lights of the booth.
“uh, you looked nice in history today. I was a little inspired. And, uh you were sat still like that for most of the class period.”
There was some emotion bursting through Damián's dual colored eyes, but Remus sucked at reading peoples faces, that was what Logan did. So he just continued to smile shyly as he was stared down by his best friend and crush.
“…this is… incredible Remus! Holy shit, I have been blessed, you have blessed me! oh my god I can’t believe you did this, its so good! how do you just do this?”
“huh? Oh, uh, I was bored, that’s all. And its not that good, it’s missing a few really key details.”
“like what?”
“oh, um well you had your necklace on and it was too difficult for me to draw at the right scale, so I just didn’t draw it, your bracelets are blank, your like, your fang? Was stuck out a little bit but I couldn’t figure out how to draw the dip in your lip, so I erased it. Your hair was more messed up, but every time I draw messy hair it looks wrong, so I just drew it like normal-”
“like normal?”
“yeah, I have a few other drawings of you back at home, and when I draw you from memory, I draw your hair like this.”
“I didn’t know you drew people rem!”
“I uh, I don’t, really. I only ever draw you…”
Damián looked ready to say something else when the waiter came in with their food. Remus put away his sketchbook and he seemed have realized he had lost his chance.
After they had finished, Damián took them to a park nearby. It was in the middle of the town square, and they sat and talked, huddled together. It was mid-January, and freezing, but they refused to go home yet. While Remus was mid-sentence he stopped. Damián was confused as he stood up with a grin. He spun in a circle before directing his grin to Damián.
“it’s snowing!!!”
Damián looked up and smiled, standing up as well. Remus bounced in excitement, and Damián had a fond expression directed towards him. He felt the last of his resolve break when a giggle escaped from Remus. He walked over, placed a hand on a now confused Remus’ cheek and kissed him. It lasted less than a second before he pulled away, backing up as the fear filled his eyes. Remus stood still; brain having gone blank.
“I'm sorry, I shouldn’t have done that, oh my god Remus I'm so sor-”
Remus rushed to Damián, arms wrapping around his neck and kissing him with all the passion he had wanted to for so so long. Damián wrapped his arms around Remus’ waist, pulling him closer before picking him up and spinning him around in a circle. He set him back down and broke the kiss again. He reached a hand up, brushing the strand of green hair out Remus’ face.
“never mind, I uh, I don’t think I'm sorry after all.”
“good.”
“hey, it’s getting late and I don’t think I want to leave quite yet. My place is pretty close, you want to just stay the night?”
Remus could barely focus on what he had said, far too busy gazing star struck into his eyes. Once he had fully processed what was said he smiled even wider and nodded.
“yeah. Yeah that sounds great. I’ll text my mom later.”
They stood there swaying together for a few more minutes in the snow before deciding that if they stayed any longer that the ride back to Damián's would be awful. When they get to his house, its late enough that his parents are asleep. They quietly go to Damián's room, and curl up together, falling asleep easily.
The next morning, they leave for school early to miss Damián's parents and stop at a fast food joint before they arrive. They're still there 45 minutes before the first bell rings and they just chat absently, Damián letting one of his arms wrap around Remus’ waist as they waited for people to arrive. Remy and toby approach with cocky grins.
“finally, they get together, it’s about time!”
“man, does this mean we’ll have to deal with 3 am calls about Re’s eyes even more?”
“oh my ra shut the fuck up you twerps.”
“love you too dee!”
Shortly after, Roman rushes over with Logan close behind, both with angry expressions. Remus makes himself small, suddenly remembering a key detail he had forgotten yesterday.
“Remus what the fuck?! Where were you? You gave me the keys and then fucking disappeared; mom is losing her shit; she thinks you're dead in a ditch somewhere!”
“uhhh, I guess I forgot to text her. Oops? I uh. I stayed the night with Damián, sorry. It was late and it started snowing. Sorry”
Roman and Logan both seemed to deflate. Logan took a look at Remus and Damián and shot an inquisitive eyebrow to them.
“I hope it was a simple staying the night and not something I might have to get expelled for?”
Remus’ eyes blew wide open and he took a sidestep out of Dees grasp. He rubbed his arm nervously as he felt a blush rise in his cheeks.
“NO! no it was just, just a couple of uh, du-dudes being bros! bros being dudes!”
“a couple of dudes being gay-”
“REMY I WILL CUT YOUR DICK OFF WITH SAFETY SCISSORS IF YOU DON’T SHUT YOUR FUCKING TRAP!”
Logan let out a chuckle then turned around, beckoning Roman do the same.
“come on Ro, let’s leave baby bro alone with his friends. Don’t get into too much trouble Rem!”

Steel PT3- Auston Matthews
Warnings: Angst, Cursing
Word Count: 1703
Part 1 Part 2 Requests are OPEN
It had officially been a year since you left. Auston kept a countdown on the lock screen of his phone. Anytime he would start smiling or joking around like he used to he would look at his phone and immediately return to the shell that Mitch had come to know. He knew it was Auston’s fucked up way of punishing himself for messing up so bad, and Mitch was the first to admit that he had messed up bad. But Mitch also knew that nobody deserved this, nobody should feel like they have to rip happiness away from themselves every minute of every day. But Auston did and at this point, Mitch didn’t think he was ever going to get his best friend back.
It didn’t take anyone long to notice the effect that your absence had on Auston, especially on the ice. He was playing, and he was playing well, but of course he was— he was Auston fucking Matthews. The thing was, he wasn’t playing safely. Hearing Auston say that he had nothing left to live for was one of the scariest moments of Mitch’s life, second only to actually seeing Auston play like he had nothing left to live for. Auston had missed more than a few games from either injury or suspension and the games that he did play resulted in him in the penalty box at least once. Honestly, people were starting to get worried, yes, of course, he was scoring and racking up assists like no player any team had seen before, but he was quickly approaching the point where he became more of a liability than an asset for the team.
It was around Bye Week that Mitch decided that something had to give. Auston had to all his head out of your ass and put it back on his shoulders, and Mitch was going to make sure it happened if he had to do it his damn self. So upon hearing that Auston planned on staying in Toronto and working out for the entirety of what little break they had, Mitch promptly added an additional ticket and an extra room to his and Steph’s reservations in Hawaii.
“You’re going and I truly, honestly, and really do not give a single flying fuck whether you want to or not,” Mitch said firmly before Auston could begin protesting, flaming the door behind himself for emphasis.
“You deserve this and you know it. Besides, I already talked to your boss and she gave you the time off so you’re pretty much stuck going with me,” your roommate insisted, turning you around and pushing you towards your closet so you could begin packing. You paused in the doorway and thought to yourself for a few seconds, upon realizing that there really was no way out of this, you shrugged and began enthusiastically picking out outfits for the trip; if there wasn’t anything you could do to stop it then you might as well have a good ass time. Your life had become completely, totally, and entirely consumed with work since the moment you arrived in Pittsburg and it had done wonders for your career. The only issue with that was that you had never really sat down and processed what had happened, in the moment it was easier to just shut everything off to deal with later, but then outside of the moment that was a hell of a lot easier as well, so you just… kept everything turned off. There was no sense in starting to feel shit again, especially with how well things were going with your job. Anytime you got a second the breathe or you felt any remnants of emotion sneak up on you, you just took on another project to keep yourself distracted. You were pretty sure you could do the same on this vacation, you’d just have to hide it from your roommate and fill any extra spare time with some resort-affiliated eye candy.
You were leaving the next morning, and while you appreciated the lack of time to mull and obsess over the work you were going to miss, you weren’t excited about only having a few hours to pack before heading to bed. You threw in a majority the casual clothes that you owned, given the move and your obsession with work, it wasn’t like there were very many. You made sure to throw in a variety of swimsuits and coverups, knowing you, you’d probably be spending a majority of your time tanning and laying out in the sand.
“Claire, i love you with all of my heart but why the literal fuck did you have to make our flight inside of the ass crack of dawn. I don’t even feel alive right now.” You groaned, leaning your head on your roommate's shoulder as the two of you made your way towards the boarding gate.
“Because this way, we get there right at dinner time, eat some fish and drink as many cocktails as our bodies can tolerate by the beach, watch the sunset, and then go back to our rooms and pass the fuck out for 12 hours,” she said with a cheer, wrapping her arm around your shoulder.
“…ya okay, that's fair,” you admitted with a shrug. “but I want the aisle.” You smirked, quickly running ahead of her to have your boarding pass scanned.
“goddamn it,” you heard her mutter, out of breath as she came up behind you at the airplane doors. “you know I cant run that fast! I buy you a whole ass vacation and this is the treatment I get?” She exclaimed, jokingly slapping you on the arm.
“Hey, I didn’t make you buy me this vacation, that was all you, b” you quipped back, placing your bag in the overhead compartment. You stood to the side with a smirk as you watched Claire reluctantly climb into the window seat. She had splurged for first class, so it wasn’t like the seats were bad, it had just been a running joke with the two of you since a work flight to Indianapolis almost ruined your entire friendship. After settling in and becoming accustomed to the altitude, you grabbed your laptop and began editing the proposal you boss had sent you that morning. Knowing Claire was already preparing some snarky comment.
“We’re not technically on vacation yet, and even when we are there really isn’t anything you can do to stop me,” you smirked, without taking your eyes off of the computer screen. She huffed under her breath but kept any comments to herself so you hummed gratefully and plugged in your headphones so you could begin working.
A few hours later, you had finished the entire assignment and managed to nap for a couple hours by the time the flight attendant came over the intercom to announce that you were beginning your descent.
“We’ve got like… less than a half hour layover and then we’re just jumping on a flight that stopped here to refuel, but there aren’t very many people boarding from here so we gotta hurry, dude,” Mitch emphasized, pushing both Auston and his suitcase so that the three of them didn’t lose all hope of making their flight.
“Planes can do that?” Auston questioned, shaking Mitch’s hands off of his shoulders and picking up speed slightly.
“well I’d fucking hope so, or we’re pretty screwed, aren’t we?” Steph sassed, pushing through the boys to walk in front of hem as she placed her sunglasses on the top of her head to try and find their boarding gate. Auston whistled at her attitude, giving Mitch a wink out of the corner of his eye. It was moments like this that Mitch had come to cherish more than was manly to admit. These glimpses of who his best friend used to be what allowed him to hold onto hope that he was still in there somewhere. Mitch’s sense of relief retreated quickly as he watched Auston look down at his phone. Mitch knew what was coming next, Auston’s shoulders would drop and his breath would shudder and his eyes would blink a couple times to keep himself from crying and then he’d retreat back within himself. Anyone who was around Auston enough to notice was familiar enough with his routine, but it didn’t change the fact that it broke their hearts nonetheless.
“no fucking way,” Claire sat up in her seat quickly. Jostled from the daydream she was forming while staring outside of the window. “(Y/N)… don’t hate me and don’t freak out,” she spoke slowly as if she were talking to a child.
“What?” You questioned with an eye roll, taking your headphone out to turn towards her.
“Umm… aren’t those Toronto Maple Leafs suitcases?” She hesitantly questioned, pointing out the window and turning her body so you could see as well.
“…no fucking way,” you breathed, feeling your heart drop in your chest.
“Okay, listen, it's probably nothing,” she rushed out quickly, attempting at some form of damage control. “the likelihood that its actually Au-“
“Dont,” you interrupted through clenched teeth. “Don’t… don’t say his name. Please.” You whispered, eyes still focused on where the suitcases were moving slowly up towards the plane.
“We’re technically in economy plus, but to answer your question, no we are not in first class, Auston,” Mitch repeated, getting frustrated with his best friend. “You go in front of us, we wanna sit together.” He pushed Auston in front of himself and Steph, wrapping his arms around her and leaning down to press a kiss on the top of her head. Preoccupied with themselves, the couple failed to notice that Auston had stopped dead in his tracks upon entering the plane. Crashing into the back of his best friend, Mitch almost missed the shocked gasp he had let out.
“(Y/N)…?” Auston choked out. Your head snapped up and you let out the breath you had unconsciously been holding since Claire had pointed out the unmistakable suitcases less than 20 minutes ago. ‘Shit,’ you thought, unable to tear your eyes away from him. ‘shit. fuck. what the fuck. what the literal fucking fuck.

Bayern-Liverpool History | UEFA Champions League |
Liverpool bayern score - UEFA Champions League schedule, scores, results: PSG beat Bayern, Chelsea top Porto -
Bayern need two goals to get through now. First shot of the game for the visitors as a neat flick from Salah is taken down well by Firmino before the Brazilian fires off a fierce half-volley that drifts just wide of Neuer's near post.
Liverpool have their first extended spell of pressure in Bayern's final third, but Mane's cute through ball fails to find here willing runner and is gobbled up by Neuer. Liverpool get the ball to Mane through the middle, but with his back to goal he's quickly crowded out of possession.
Just what Kovac will want to see. They've posed a threat in the final third, whilst retaining possession well liverpool bayern score prevent Liverpool's pressing game taking liverpool bayern score. Liverpool are forced into an early change with Henderson unable to continue after picking up an ankle knock. Fabinho is on in the LFC captain's place. Lewandowski goes down in the box under a challenge from van Dijk, but it's not enough for the referee to point to the spot.
It was a shame because the Pole had gotten the wrong side of his man, the ball just didn't liverpool bayern score up kindly for him. Bayern threaten after Lewandowski and Gnabry combine in the box.
Liverpool fail to clear liverpool bayern score danger convincingly allowing the ball to fall to Thiago on the edge of the area. The Spaniards' shot sails well over. Jordan Henderson looks like he's turned his ankle and may not be able to continue. For liverpool bayern score he receives treatment on the sidelines. Everything is very tightly packed in midfield so far.
Bayern have had the lion's share of possession and are showing signs that they're willing to put in a more courageous performance. This has the potential to be an absolute barnstormer ladies and gentlemen. Bayern's best chance of progressing will be to prevent Liverpool from scoring. It won't be easy, liverpool bayern score they'll fancy their chances of doing liverpool bayern score on home soil.
Bayern have progressed to the next round 21 out of 23 times following a draw away from home in the first leg of a European knockout tie. Can they make it 22 against Liverpool? Tonight marks only try this second time this season that Joshua Kimmich has not lined up for Bayern. Blog link, he cannot come on even for 20 minutes, due to suspension, and it will be interesting to see how Bayern adjust to the absence of barcelona liverpool the most versatile player in world football.
While Bayern's goalless draw at Anfield in the first liverpool bayern score was a positive result, they did not get an away goal. That effectively means Liverpool have more results at their disposal tonight to reach the quarter-finals: A win, or a scoring draw. Bayern need to win or, if it remainseither find a winner in extra-time, or prevail on penalties. However, they have kept five clean sheets in their last six games in all competitions. Anyone else think this is too close to call?
Bayern have won 12 of their last 13 games - can they make it 13 from liverpool bayern score tonight? With the attacking talent in their side, with Ribery - a winner in - James and Gnabry in support of Lewandowski, would you bet against them?
Over the past 10 years, they have shaped the team and made us world champions. As always, the Liverpool bayern score full-back was a constant attacking outlet, always available for a pass liverpool bayern score Liverpool's left-hand side. But he was caught out for Bayern's equaliser, briefly switching off and failing to recover before Gnabry's cross was turned in by Matip. Before that, he had been one of Liverpool's best players. The Dutch liverpool bayern score worked hard and covered a lot of ground, making several runs into the Bayern penalty area hoping for the ball to fall.
He wasn't great, but he didn't have to be as Bayern were strangely meek. Liverpool's captain returned to the starting line-up after sitting out the win over Burnley on Sunday. However, he lasted just over minutes before being forced off with an injury.
Milner struggled in the game, particularly with his passing, but redeemed himself with an accurate delivery for Van Liverpool bayern score goal. Mane has been in sensational form for Liverpool this season domestically, scoring 16 goals in 28 games.
However, it has been liverpool bayern score different story in Europe. Mane has scored just once in seven Champions League games this campaign, after netting times in the competition last season. We dealt with it and Fabinho came on and did very liverpool bayern score. Virgil van Dijk is asked about his goal.
Overall to go through is the most important thing.
Liverpool football club: record v Bayern München
Virgil Van Dijk speaks! We knew it was going to be tough. They are a great team. We knew we would get chances to score. The equaliser was unlucky but we did the job. On to the liverpool bayern score eight. That was very good from Liverpool. It was easy in the end for Liverpool, who are through to the liverpool bayern score after a resilient, clinical and professional performance.
Updated at 9. Liverpool are almost there. Activate Alberto Moreno! Robertson looks devastated. Liverpool bayern score has been on the way for the last few minutes.
Divock Origi finds Mo Salah on the right and the Egyptian uses the outside of his left foot to send a cracking cross towards the far post, where Mane heads his second of the night past Neuer. That should be that. Liverpool are joining the other three English sides in the quarter-finals. As for Bayern, their fans are heading for the exits.
Or Liverpoolfor that matter. What has happened to German football? A third Liverpool goal looks likelier than a Bayern second. The forward ignores Wijnaldum to his lef, dips inside and looks certain to score. The winger looked like he had the legs on Fabinho there. Liverpool deal with see here resulting liverpool bayern score. Still, the field tilted in their direction. That, combined with the road goal they managed to score, gave them a lifeline.
Bayern Munich vs. Liverpool: UEFA Champions League last-16 second leg - As it happened!
Two things stood out from Real Madrid's performance: 1 they did a fantastic job of stretching Liverpool with long, accurate passes, and 2 Vinicius Jr. The average liverpool bayern score features about four to five switches of play long, mostly liverpool bayern score passes that flip the ball from one side of the field to the other per match. This horizontal action stretched Liverpool's defense and opened up vertical passing lanes; Kroos, Modric and Liverpool bayern scoreReal Madrid's aging but still technically gifted midfield, also went for on long balls forward passes at liverpool bayern score 35 yards liverpool bayern score. Kroos was 9-for-9, and a long ball set up the first of two Vinicius Junior goals.
If Kroos wasn't their best player, Vini Jr. He's averaged 0. For the second straight knockout match following their win over Atalanta on March 16he was utterly brilliant. He put two of his four shots in the net and liverpool bayern score 14 passes in the attacking third. If this version of the precocious year-old continues to show up, Real Madrid could win the whole damn tournament.
In one sense, it's pretty simple liverpool bayern score prepare for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, as you don't have tons of options.
They're much better at swallowing up counters before they begin than they were a season ago; it's why they're the No. But in each of their only two losses in the past six months to Tottenham Hotspur and to Manchester Unitedand in all four of their losses in the past eight months including to Leicester City and to Lyonthe formula has been the same:. But BVB have to be encouraged by the fact that of the seven shots in this match that generated at least 0.
And that total doesn't include the disallowed liverpool bayern score BVB's Jude Bellingham created for himself in the 31st minute, tipping the ball away from City's Ederson before getting called for a controversial foul.
City will again control the ball in the second leg because it's what City does. Borussia Dortmund's rigid liverpool bayern score structure prevented City from creating quite as many chances as they're used to, but like termites, City finds a way through a defense eventually. And while Ilkay Gundogan has benefited the most this season from Pep Guardiola's occasionally liverpool bayern score attack, it was Phil Foden 's turn on Tuesday.
Though ostensibly a left winger, Foden had nine of City's 21 touches in Dortmund's penalty area and produced four shots, including by far their two best scoring chances of more tips here second half.
He nearly put City up in the 65th minute and then, making an identical run with Gundogan in the 90th minute they did that a couple of times late in the matchhe pulled back, received a pass from Gundogan and put home the game winner. Wherever your defense lacks structural integrity, a City player will be there to exploit it. You just might know who it's going to be ahead of time.

Ten things to watch for in the 2018 Dakar Rally
By: Valentin Khorounzhiy, News Editor at Motorsport.com (x)
The 40th edition of the most gruelling rally event of all, the Dakar, begins on Saturday in the Peruvian capital of Lima. Here's everything you need to know ahead of the two-week marathon event.
#1. Rain, rain, go away
Tumblr media
The 2017 rally's route was received considerably better than that of its predecessor, with many a competitor praising the increased focus on off-roading and navigation and a lesser reliance on 'WRC-style' road stages.
The downside was that a significant chunk of that route didn't actually feature competitive running, with persistent heavy rainfall dominating the Bolivian leg, as well as sections in Argentina.
Day-to-day conditions were rough (particularly in Bolivia's Oruro bivouac, which turned into a swamp overnight), a number of stages were shortened and two – including the much-anticipated 'Super Belen' in Northern Argentina – were canned.
Rain in Bolivia is no one-off issue, and the troubles of the 2017 event left the likes of trucks frontrunner Gerard De Rooy and Hans Stacey, as well as top car-class privateer Erik van Loon, calling for a rethink of the route.
Dakar is still going to Bolivia this year – albeit for a shorter stretch – and none of the three aforementioned competitors will be with the rally this time, De Rooy in particular deciding to contest the Africa-based Eco Race instead.
This is by no means a mass exodus, but Dakar organisers will be wary of the rally becoming too much of a hassle for the European privateers that make up most of its ranks.
They could really use a smoother run in 2018 – and for the returning Peru leg that opens the route to be a success.
#2. Last hurrah for two veterans?
Tumblr media
The news that Peugeot would be bowing out after the 2018 race was a big deal in many respects, not least because it could be the catalyst for retirement for both Stephane 'Mr. Dakar' Peterhansel and Carlos 'El Matador' Sainz.
Peterhansel, comfortably the most successful competitor in Dakar history, was inundated with retirement questions immediately after claiming his 13th event win last year.
With the 2018 race marking Dakar's 40th anniversary and Peugeot calling it quits, it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see Peterhansel hang up his helmet now – but the 52-year-old is yet to commit one way or another.
He recently told Motorsport.com: “I don’t really have plans. After Peugeot’s announcement to stop the Dakar programme, we weren’t surprised because we suspected it, and there isn’t any nostalgia for the moment as it’s not over yet! But there is a bit of sadness.
“We lived four years of an exceptional adventure so now, I just feel like leaving this behind me and focusing exclusively on this next Dakar and doing the best I can.
“Then I will see what I will want to do next. But currently, I don’t even give any thought to what’s going to happen after crossing the line of the next Dakar.”
Sainz, three years older, has struck a similar note. But with no obvious new manufacturers on Dakar's horizon, both his and Peterhansel's options would be limited if they wanted to keep going – and it's not at all unlikely that one, or both, will decide this race will be as good a time as any to step aside.
#3. Loeb's moment of truth
Tumblr media
Sebastien Loeb's successes on the 'WRC-style' sections of the 2016 Dakar were to be expected, but it was his and co-driver Daniel Elena's strong performances in off-roading and navigation last year that marked the crew as potential champions-in-waiting.
Well, about that... Peugeot's announcement that its Dakar programme would conclude with the 2018 event suggested Loeb and Elena won't get as many chances as they really ought to, and the Frenchman's subsequent blunt confirmation that this year would be his “last chance” has now driven the point home.
Loeb clearly has what it takes to win the Dakar this time. He already looked Peugeot's fastest driver last year, but ran out of time to make up for a navigational mistake in a head-to-head duel against the shrewd Stephane Peterhansel.
And despite his obvious talent, Loeb still hasn't won a cross-country rally. Most recently, he squandered a very real chance in the Silk Way Rally when he crashed out, handing the win to fellow Peugeot man Cyril Despres (who should likewise be a factor in this year's Dakar with another year of car experience under his belt).
So, it's now or never, and the pressure on Loeb will be considerably higher this time around. And while a Loeb victory would be popular, Peugeot has insisted it is not planning to stack the deck in favour the nine-time WRC champion.
“The only thing we know ahead of the race is that many things will happen – with weather, with incidents, with driver, co-driver and navigational errors,” said Peugeot's Bruno Famin.
“It is impossible to know who will win, whether it'll be Loeb or not. For us, the important thing is that one of us wins – and then we'll be satisfied.”
#4. Spoiling the farewell party
Tumblr media
Nasser Al-Attiyah topping the opening stage of the 2017 rally for Toyota prompted Carlos Sainz to say Peugeot had been treated unfairly by changes to restrictor regulations – with the 4x4 cars allowed an increase and his two-litre buggy getting a reduction.
But that, of course, was very much a false dawn. Al-Attiyah crashed out of the rally early, and while his fellow Toyota drivers kept in touch with Peugeot over the opening stages close to sea level, their heavier, normally-aspirated cars were no match for the 3008DKR at altitude.
Come 2018, further measures have been taken to level the playing field, with the buggies made heavier while the 4x4 cars get a weight break and increased suspension travel.
That should take the Toyota camp halfway to preventing another blowout. The other half would be its chief hope, Al-Attiyah, staying out of trouble.
After his bruising 2017 exit, the two-time Dakar winner dominated the Cross-Country Rally World Cup for a third straight year, and should have a strong shot at ruining Peugeot's farewell party.
Still, even if the rapid Qatari doesn't keep the car in one piece, fellow Toyota driver and 2009 champion Giniel de Villiers almost certainly will, the South African having finished each of his 14 Dakars so far - and only once outside of the top seven.
#5. Mini's double-spec strategy
Tumblr media
The recent unveiling of X-Raid Mini's all-new 2WD buggy means the team will play both sides in the 2018 race.
Mikko Hirvonen and Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who have spearheaded the outfit's recent efforts, will be piloting the buggy, whereas 2014 champion Nani Roma – back in the Mini fold after one year with Toyota – will stick with the 4x4.
But despite a two-fold strategy and a formidable line-up, toppling Peugeot and Toyota might be too tough an ask for now – at least according to former Dakar champion and Mini tester Jutta Kleinschmidt.
“It's difficult to say because we never saw it racing, they only did tests in Morocco,” she told Motorsport.com. “For my experience, it will have some technical problems, I'm quite sure, because it's a long race.
“I don't think it's already competitive, I would be very surprised. It could make some good results but to win is so hard. Peugeot suffered the same in its first year [in 2015] and then the second year was really good.
“I also think they put all the effort in the buggy, they hadn't developed the other car, not much at least.”
#6. KTM-Honda rivalry approaching boiling point
Tumblr media
Last year, KTM continued a stranglehold on the Dakar’s bikes category dating back to 2001 thanks to Sam Sunderland, but the Briton's maiden triumph certainly wasn't without controversy.
It owed much to a one-hour penalty that was handed to all four Honda factory riders on the fourth stage for illegal refuelling – at a stroke turning Joan Barreda’s 19-minute lead into a 41-minute deficit. Barreda went on to lose by 43 minutes.
One month later, during KTM’s MotoGP launch, CEO Stefan Pierer made headlines when he accused his “most hated” rival Honda of trying to cheat its way to Dakar glory.
Honda eventually returned the compliment when Ricky Brabec accused KTM of always getting its own way with the organisers in October’s Morocco Rally, won by Mathias Walkner.
In response, KTM rally sport manager Jordi Viladoms told Motorsport.com: “[Brabec] says there is a person who speaks well with the FIM and with the organisation, it’s clear he’s referring to me.
“I appreciate the sentiment that I do my job well, but it’s not KTM’s style to talk about other teams like that. We are a little surprised, but they have their style and we have ours.”
Those comments have set the tone for what promises to be another fascinating Battle Royale between the Dakar’s pre-eminent two-wheeled brands.
#7. Barreda's year at last?
Tumblr media
If anybody has emerged as the heir to Dakar bike legends Marc Coma and Cyril Despres in recent years, it’s Joan Barreda, winner of no fewer than 18 stages in the South American event since 2012. And yet, the Spaniard has never finished on the overall podium, let alone won the title.
Last year’s one-hour penalty was merely the latest in a long line of misfortunes for Barreda, who lost strong victory chances both in 2016 and 2015 due to mechanical trouble.
The Spaniard’s luck didn’t improve after last year’s Dakar either. He broke his collarbone in March and then broke his wrist in August, compromising his preparations for this year’s event.
Following surgery, Barreda is finally ready to return to competitive action. But the 34-year-old insists finally capturing a maiden Dakar victory is the not the be all and end all for him.
“I want to try at least to win one Dakar because it would be the prize for the work of all these years,” Barreda told Motorsport.com. “But it is not something that obsesses me or stops me sleeping. What I dreamt of, I have already achieved: to be the reference rider.”
Barreda’s opposition will be stiff, not least within his own Honda team, where impressive 2016 rookie Kevin Benavides – who was forced to skip the event last year – will also start among the favourites for victory.
At KTM, reigning champion Sunderland is joined by 2016 winner Toby Price, last year’s runner-up Walkner and former enduro star Antoine Meo, while FIM Cross Country Rallies champion Pablo Quintanilla spearheads sister brand Husqvarna’s assault.
Not to be discounted either is Yamaha, which has recruited Franco Caimi from Honda to join Adrian van Beveren and Xavier de Soultrait in its works line-up.
#8. Replacing de Rooy as Kamaz's chief headache
Tumblr media
The two Dakars Kamaz has lost since 2009 had both gone to De Rooy, who is sitting out this year's race – so the Russian truck manufacturer should fancy its chances.
It'll have a strong line-up as usual, with champions Eduard Nikolaev and Ayrat Mardeev, rising star Dmitry Sotnikov and Anton Shibalov in an initial support role.
Sotnikov's fortunes will be of particular interest - his Kamaz is to be equipped with a new straight-six engine instead of the traditional 16-litre V8. And it is not as big a gamble as it might sound, given that Sotnikov has already headed a Kamaz Silk Way Rally podium lock-out in a similar configuration.
That's not to say Kamaz will have a clear run at victory, as the team still has to overcome the likes of regular frontrunner Ales Loprais, his fellow Tatra driver Martin Kolomy and Martin van den Brink.
And while de Rooy is absent, his IVECO team should now be spearheaded by Argentine Federico Villagra, who too can be a formidable rival.
A former WRC regular, he has finished in the top four in his first two truck-class Dakars and further proved his credentials by winning the Morocco Rally last year.
#9. Karyakin versus Casale
Tumblr media
The quad class might lack the wide recognition and marquee names of other categories at Dakar, but it gives no quarter when it comes to drama, competition and unpredictability.
A cursory glance at this year's entry list would paint the 2018 event as a duel between the reigning champion, Russia's Sergey Karyakin, and '14 champion/'17 runner-up Ignacio Casale.
Casale, having lost by over an hour last time out, feels he was “in very poor shape” then and is approaching the event with renewed confidence, but Karyakin will be no weaker this time and is motivated to prove his maiden triumph was no “fluke”.
Of course, these usually don't work out so simple. Last year's race featured five different leaders and six different winners, and all of them are back in 2018.
Among those who could disrupt a potential Karyakin-Casale showdown are fellow past champion Rafal Sonik, Argentine riders Jeremias Gonzalez and Pablo Copetti, Bolivia's main hope Walter Nosiglia, Dutch cross-country world champion Kees Koolen and Peruvian Alexis Hernandez, who ran at the front of the race in 2016.
But most curious, perhaps, will be the speed of French duo Axel Dutrie and Simon Vitse, who both mounted a serious dark-horse challenge on their respective debuts last year.
#10. From the touchline to the cockpit
Tumblr media
The sight of non-motorsport celebrity isn't a particularly rare occurrence for the Dakar Rally, with cameos ranging from Margaret Thatcher's son Mark's infamously disastrous 1982 outing to ski champion Luc Alphand's slow and gradual path towards a full-on Dakar win in 2006.
And this year's race will mark the latest addition to the roster in the form Andre Villas-Boas, 40-year-old Portuguese football manager who just a few years ago was seen as the next big thing in the sport.
Villas-Boas remains the youngest manager to win a European club competition, his Porto side lifting the Europa League trophy when he was just 33. But subsequent stints at English giants Chelsea and fellow London powerhouse Tottenham were ultimately inglorious, swiftly halting his rapid ascent.
Still, he is no spent force, which is what makes this cameo particularly exciting. He has just walked out of a lucrative deal with China's Shanghai SIPG and is frequently linked to various football clubs in search of managers.
He's also clearly not contesting the rally on a whim, long-known to be a motorsport fan intent with a dream of racing at the Dakar.
That, of course, is no guarantee he'll do well – but he has commendable enthusiasm, a handy co-driver in former KTM rider Ruben Faria and a solid piece of equipment in the Toyota Hilux.
If you're partial to football, or just keen on more mainstream recognition for the Dakar, Villas-Boas will be worth keeping an eye out on.

Chapter 2 - Perspective
Within the next week, 'Sin's toxin' had become a well-loved slang word for alcohol. It was simply too wide-spread to name a single type of drink after, to the disappointment of many a greedy nightclub. That still didn't stop them for coming up with their own variants and mockeries: there were at least “Sinner's toxin”, “Gin and toxin” and “Unholy Water”. The mega-popular trend only died down after the Zanarkand Abes board of directors threatened to sue at least a dozen of the most distinguished clubs in town – after all the name had been coined by their beloved top talent, son of Jecht, Young Promise of the Year, and a disaster survivor hero to boot.
At least, this was the public image of Tidus that they wished to preserve – for as long as possible. To a small group of people on the inside, however, he was starting to look more like a… problem. A fallen star, one that had perhaps burned too bright. A bright red apple practically leaning on the tree-trunk. Blitz elite at the top of their game… swimming against the current to the bottom.
The fame, the grandeur, the screaming fans… the money. It was never enough for Tidus, they said. He was always stuck in his father's shadow. To be sure, the man had been an icon – even at his most disgraced, one strike away from being kicked off the team, he had turned the situation around for himself – he had vanished. Vanished to live on forever as a myth, an otherworldly being; one that they had all perhaps collectively hallucinated. The son had made a name for himself, for sure – but he was never going to outshine Jecht. Not until he had fully embraced the imitative nature of his career, of his stardom, and pulled a mystery death of his very own. Stir together the familiar grieving, the all-too evocative memorial tributes, the sensational news coverage starting to turn mundane, the ingredients of myth cobbler were all in the bowl. Add the secret ingredient – a sudden  inexplicable return – and the bowl toppled over from the swollen dough.
But even that had not been enough, not for this young glory hound. He just had to have the crazy, too. At least Jecht's had been a fairly commonplace kind - “Sin's toxin”, as one might call it now. But Tidus, he would not be satisfied without a gargantuan whale monster, a magical young woman from a paradise island, a corrupt thousand-year-old religion, and a whole another world that they all inhabited. Long story short, either the storm had taken its toll on him in the end, or life had. Everybody knew that the boy had always faced insane pressure; unhealthy expectations; and here were the results. He was also proving to be something of a chronic orphan. The most mean-spirited of gossip, even the tabloids would steer clear of.
Of course, Leo, being a hard-boiled professional (with some help from Bern with the physical task), had removed the troubled teen from the conference by the time he had gotten to “mask-wearing creeps showed up”. Ever since, the sports agent had assumed full-on damage control mode. But new rumors were constantly leaking, either grossly false or scarily accurate ones. And naturally, the boy had told him everything. He had told his doctor everything. And it was up to the two of them to keep him from telling others. The Abes had suffered a huge drop of morale since their key player's disappearance (if also a boost of the legend status) and Leo doubted they could handle a scandal of this magnitude.
At the moment, the only acceptable narrative (paraphrasing the official statement) was, “he hit his head”. “He went through heavy trauma during the past few months.” “He is receiving the best possible treatment and what he really needs from his fans right now is privacy and respect.” Fortunately, Tidus had always presented a likable public persona, and thus gathered quite a devoted fanbase actually invested in his well-being, so these wishes were being granted, for the most part. No one knew quite what to believe, but everybody agreed that they wanted their favorite blitzer to get better. For every sensational piece twisting every syllable that had (or had not) come out of his mouth at the conference, there was another calling for common sense and common civility, and making huge leaps of rationalization.
Tidus knew that technically, he had made a mistake. He could have played dumb, bellowed “Go Abes!” a couple of times and things would have been fine, in fact his popularity would have likely risen to an all-time high. Why hadn't he, he even wondered himself. The problem with the whole “staying true to oneself” philosophy was that all too often, one would still look like a nutcase to others. Of course they weren't going to take him at his word. The story was bananas. It was as bananas to them as a thriving, pulsating Zanarkand had been to Rikku and Wakka. And not that he needed another reminder, but this place was sorely lacking in people like her.
“I do believe your Zanarkand exists. I really do, you know!”
But Tidus also knew what he had seen, what he had heard; smelled; tasted. He missed the people he had met. Heck, he missed Spira, with all of its backwards ways. His journey – their journey – had forever left a pronounced, profound, near-obtrusive mark on him; he was no longer that bitter little child with bitter little dreams; that used to congratulate himself on the bare minimum – not being his father. Spira had taught him what it meant to be part of something bigger – a bigger person – one might, say, a hero – and how he might go about showing at least a fraction of those qualities – the qualities that he’d so admired in the six individuals he’d gotten to know the best. Make that seven, he mused.
There was a notion – on first glance an absurd one – lurking in the back of his mind. Days would pass before Tidus could give it words, but when he did, he knew it to be true. Spira was his home. Somehow, at some point, when he had not paid attention, something had shifted. Home. Such a simple word; yet a deceitful one. Never before had he given it thought beyond the obvious, the concrete; the comfortable little houseboat at the Zanarkand bay. Clearly, doing so was a dangerous business. He wasn’t sure just how many more life-changing epiphanies he could take this week.
But what really complicated things was that this place was real, too; the only reality he had known for 17 years. Zanarkand may never have been his true home, but it had been a home. He may not have formed here the deepest of friendships, met people who would change him in such powerful, enduring ways – but he had known companionship, conflict, fondness, playful rivalry. Even back in the day, he used to get on Leo's nerves; he would exchange the occasional witticism with Bern, quarrel with his teammates, answer fanmail, go out with his pals from that awful would-be elite school… turn in his homework five minutes late, have a whole debate with his lecturer on whether or not his future was doomed. He had lived a life.
But it was never supposed to be a problem, Tidus sighed, with something approaching anger. It was supposed to have been a dream. A memory. A live, metropolis-sized museum exhibition, sponsored by the fayth for the exhibits themselves - with an expiration date. He was never supposed to have either life, Spira or Zanarkand. And what an ordeal the fayth had put him through, too; what mental and spiritual gymnastics he had exercised to get from anguished denial to noble acceptance and sacrifice! For this? Was this a joke to them? Did they think it funny, to first sucker-punch him with death penalty; to dangle before his eyes the ticking time-bomb that was his existence; and then cry, “Surprise! Just kidding!”
Did they think it funny? To put him in impossible situations, constantly pull the rug from under his still-unbalanced feet? Make him a perpetual fish out of water, always longing for – always belonging to –  someplace he wasn't? Never mind those tabloid speculations about Auron – if anyone had abducted him, the fayth had. They had robbed him of his home twice over. To have him be disbelieved, humiliated, deemed off his rocker – again. Dismissed as “sick”. Again.
And what did sick people need? Treatment.
“This has been our… third meeting now.”
Technically, as meetings went, it was more around their fourteenth. Therapy session, Tidus scoffed to himself, just say the proper word. He supposed that the very thin and wildly ironic silver lining was that on this side of the cross-dimensional fence, he was at least important enough to fuss over. Not so in Spira – heck, he doubted anyone in Trauma Land had ever heard of mental health care beyond pats on the back and campfire anecdotes, and boy, was there a gap in the market. Who would tend to all the overworked therapists, he wondered.
He lazily let his gaze wander around Dr. Cidron's unremarkable office. It was a houseboat as well; on the other side of the Zanarkand bay. It was larger in size and more clinical in design; yet trying very hard to look cozy with pleasant little objects such as flower pots, miniature paintings and assorted blitzball collectibles sprinkled around. The curtains were very deliberately shut and the air felt thick to Tidus's lungs, even with the downright exemplary air conditioning. Dr. Cidron had wanted to take the sessions to Tidus's house, but the patient had refused. He still had trouble embracing the city in its entirety as his new reality, and badly needed the practice. Ideally someplace he couldn't imagine – he could have too easily written off his house as a prolonged hallucination.
This dour office was a start, he supposed. Although the good doctor seemed to hold quite a high opinion of his patient's creative power.
“And you still wish to call them… your experiences. Not daydreams or fantasies, not hallucinations. I'm only speaking this frankly because you know your agent's thoughts on the subject. And I want to hear yours, while reminding you of--”
“What? The truth?”
The truth was, Tidus had not told Leo or his doctor everything. They'd heard all about the attack on the city, Spira's oddities, Sin – and Tidus in turn had been on the receiving end of both a snappy, self-pitying lecture boiling down to “get it together or get a real job” and a long-winded analytical breakdown on how Sin was a metaphor for his dismissive father, among other things – but neither of his babysitters had gotten the full story. No one had. The story of the summoning of Zanarkand, a city destroyed a thousand years ago, and the phantom citizens that still wandered its ever-lit streets.
After all, judging by the present circumstances, he could've been horribly misinformed on that front.
Tidus opened his mouth, then reconsidered. “I'm… not sure what the truth is, myself. I'm not caving in, I'm… make no mistake about that. But it's not like I'm making this up for fun, y'know? Being called crazy, nuh uh – not my idea of a good time.”
“Yes, I understand.” Dr. Cidron took a short pause, gazing fixedly at his clasped hands resting on the desk between them. “That's exactly what… I guess I want to remind you of the truth as it appears to most people.”
The man had a point. The truth, right now, was a matter of perspective, with the opposite ends heavily unbalanced, too. No matter how unfair his situation, eventually Tidus would have to accept that not everyone in town – no one in town – had experienced what he had, and perhaps they deserved better than the apparent mad ramblings of an unstable teenage sports sensation. Perhaps it was time he did damage control, too. But which parts could he take back… and did he want to? Perhaps the city was the unstable one here, with its allegedly dubious existence. Perhaps he'd been given a task, a responsibility… to tell them everything.
“I have to say,” Dr. Cidron began again, “you do paint quite a vivid image. Of this 'Spira'… the corrupt politics, these social structures so completely different from our own. Of these individuals… You know, if the whole blitzball supremo gig never pans out again, you should be a novelist.”
Tidus rolled his eyes, although he felt a warmness from the doctor.
“Funny.”
- -
As very much expected, Tidus found Bern the bodyguard waiting for him outside the doctor's office, with a studious look on his face, which he then awkwardly tried to adjust into a smile.
“Not today, Bern. I need some time alone, okay?” Tidus groaned, then strutted past the muscled tower of a man, and, as annoyed as he was, had to marvel at the empty streets. If anything, his team was superbly competent at making sure nobody knew where he was, ever; in the midst of all this media hassle. “I'll give you paid leave. Overtime pay.”
“Not in the budget, champ,” Bern retorted. “Try again.”
“I wish to be alone... please.”
Bern shrugged. “I suppose that's fair. I mean, my exact assignment is to accompany you home…”
“Forget about it,” Tidus shot back and on his way he went, well aware of how immature he must have sounded.
- -
On the deck of his houseboat something else entirely awaited. He could see it from some distance away, and exactly nothing about it invited a closer examination. It was small, it stood completely still, and appeared to emit some sort of whitish glow. It looked familiar in that out-of-place sort of way – when something unremarkable in one environment simply did not belong in another.
It was a fiend.
Tidus instinctively reached for the sword he no longer carried. But the creature was already dying – dispersing into pyreflies. Tidus had at first seen a vague mammal-esque shape, but now the trespasser's true form was growing harder and harder to discern. Apart from the eyes – the vacant, terrible eyes.
“I come from Spira, just like you.”

WAFU Cup semifinal preview: Intensity makes hosts Senegal the favourites
Tumblr media
Hosts Senegal face a stern test when they meet Mali in Wednesday’s WAFU Cup of Nations semifinal, with Ghana set to square off with the Ivory Coast on Tuesday in the other final-four showdown.
The Teranga Lions have impressed on home soil, taking control early against Guinea-Bissau in their opening fixture, before dispatching Benin in Thursday’s quarterfinal.
They attacked vibrantly and fluidly in their first match, and while the Bissau-Guineans threatened a comeback after pulling one back, the midfield duo of Moustapha Name and El Hadji Mackie Kane represented a fearsome defensive barrier as Senegal saw out the contest.
The hosts boast a physicality and intensity that no other teams have matched, and naturally, passionate home support gives them an edge which makes them favourites to clinch the title.
“It’s so important for us to win, to make sure the supporters continue to come to the stadium,” attacker Assane Mbodj told ESPN. “It will be so again, in our following game, to keep them coming.
“God willing, we can make up for Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations [the Teranga Lions were defeated by Algeria in the final], and we’ll do everything to win the cup.”
Their first victory was secured without four players from domestic champions Generation Foot, with the quartet away in Egypt on CAF Champions League duties.
Ultimately, their game against SC Zamalek was cancelled, and two of the four immediately stepped into the starting XI for the quarterfinal victory over a talented Benin side, with Khadim Diaw particularly impressive in defence.
While teams at the WAFU Cup have struggled to consistently create throughout matches, to impose themselves and to construct fluent attacking moves, the presence of the intelligent, hard-working Mbodj behind leading forward Youssouph Badji has ensured that their midfield links to their forward line better than the other contenders.
However, Mali have quality of their own, and are certainly capable of causing an upset.
Notably, the Eagles have taken early leads in both of their opening games; Issaka Samake fired them ahead from the penalty spot after three minutes in their opener against Niger, when the Menas panicked and brought down marauding wideman Mamaye Coulibaly to give away a spot kick.
Mali ultimately cruised to a 3-1 victory, with Moussa Kone scoring twice.
In their quarterfinal against Sierra Leone, they again took command early, with Ali Badra Sylla heading them into a fourth-minute lead from which the Leone Stars never truly looked like recovering.
“Our match [against Niger] wasn’t very open,” said Eagles coach Diane Nouhoum in his post-match press conference, “but technically, we had more than our opponents, so we had chances and that always gives us hope.
“We know, again, that we have to do all we can not to concede, and we know that against Senegal that won’t be easy.
“Our defensive unit must work together, and we must find a good balance between our offensive work and our defence if we’re going to have another good game against Senegal.”
Coulibaly, a tall and ungainly winger, has been key to their success; contributing a magnificent assist for Kone in the opener, before setting up Sylla again in the second match.
How Senegal negate his threat could decide the outcome of Wednesday’s semifinal.
The least impressive of the four semifinalists, Ghana, have yet to truly shine in the competition so far; they laboured to a 1-0 victory over The Gambia in their opener, with Joseph Esso scoring the only goal of the game, before requiring penalties to dispatch Burkina Faso in their quarterfinal following a 1-1 draw.
Esso was again influential in this contest, dovetailing well with Mumuni Shafiu and providing the assist for the equaliser after Ilias Tiendrebeogo had put the Stallions ahead.
Ghana’s midfield are combative and solid, while Augustine Okrah provided a touch of class after being introduced from the start against Burkina Faso having been benched for the opener.
There is hope that the Black Stars will continue to improve. The players are short of match sharpness following the suspension of domestic football, while Asante Kotoko players only joined the squad late following their CAF Champions League commitments last weekend.
These caveats mean that Maxwell Konadu’s troops deserve the benefit of the doubt ahead of Tuesday’s meeting with the Ivory Coast, where the team’s brittle optimism will certainly be tested.
While some of Ghana’s players have voiced concerns about the team’s preparation and readiness for the competition, the Ivorians are a united and confident collective who have come to Senegal to win their first WAFU Cup title.
Their opening 4-1 victory over Cape Verde – the most convincing display by any side in the First Round – looked even more impressive in light of the latter’s triumph over Nigeria, with Laurent Magbi and Aboubacar Doumbia scoring two goals each.
Then they downed a well organised Togo side in the quarters, with penalties settling the contest following a 0-0 draw.
If Ghana can neutralise the Elephants as Togo did, then they have a fighting chance, and while Ivorian celebrations at the conclusion of their victory demonstrated the belief and the confidence of the group, they may yet prove premature.
The Plate
This year’s format means the eight teams who lost their First Round fixtures dropped into the plate competition, while the winners advanced to the cup.
Regional giants Nigeria were dispatched by Cape Verde in their quarterfinal, comfortably the smallest nation in the region, and the islanders will be confident that they’ll see off The Gambia to reach the final.
In Wednesday’s plate semi, Guinea – defeated by Benin in their opener – meet a plucky Liberia side who have been one of the more refreshing stories of the competition.
Supervised by the charismatic Robert Lartey, who has overseen the development of many of these young Lone Stars players at club level, Liberia were beaten in the First Round by Sierra Leone, with a defensive mix-up allowing the Leone Stars in for the first-half winner.
Paired with a much bigger, stronger Niger unit in their quarterfinal, Liberia rode their luck at times – and were the beneficiaries of a bizarre refereeing call – but their individual quality in the final third ultimately saw them strike a winner through the excellent Kelvin Potis.
The wideman has been one of the breakout stars of the tournament, and despite hobbling out of that encounter with a foot injury, has confirmed to ESPN that he is back in contention for the semifinal clash with Guinea.

Santiago Bernabéu. Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Champions League semi-final
Mourinho deployed Pepe in the middle of a defensive midfield with Lassana Diarra and Xabi Alonso. His job was to do another ‘Terminator’ on Messi. Madrid left the grass long – three centimetres, rather than the one centimetre which Barcelona prefer. Barcelona’s players take that subject seriously. Skinhead playing surface, ball flying at the speed of a hockey puck – advantage to the quick, technical ball players. Grass like the fringes on a 1970s country and western suede jacket, slower moving ball, happy days for the hasslers, the hackers and the horrible, defensive football which so many employ to try and shackle Messi, Iniesta and Xavi. The latter commented: “It’s a great pity that there are no rules about the grass. In 2011 we have rules about earrings, the media, our shirts, but none regarding the grass which can make the match so much more entertaining, or end up causing injuries.” Madrid, the nine-time European champions, only managed 26% possession of the ball in their own stadium in the Champions League semi-final. Partly that was down to the visitors, partly to Mourinho’s game plan. El País is Spain’s leading quality daily – it wears no club colours. Their lead writer, José Sámano, put it like this: “With Pepe, Madrid refused to play. Without Pepe, they couldn’t play. Mourinho’s bugle call to his team has been to play these matches on the dark side. He did it in the league the other week and again last night. Neither time brought him a result and that would have been the only excuse for playing this way.” ‘Without Pepe’ refers to the straight red referee Stark showed the Portuguese whose straight leg, knee-high challenge on Dani Alves would only not have been an ordering-of had it been part of the ‘anything goes’ 1970 FA Cup final between Leeds and Chelsea – recommended viewing online. Mourinho was also red-carded for sarcastically mocking and applauding the refereeing team for the decision. Without Pepe to shackle him, Messi ran wild. His first goal came when Ibrahim Afellay made Marcelo look like a statue before crossing for Messi, who had eluded Xabi Alonso. The Argentinian’s second was one of the all-time great Champions League goals. Receiving possession from Busquets, near halfway, Messi left four Madrid players in his wake, dragging them along with him as if they were fish in a trawl net, and culminated the dribble by clipping the ball past Casillas. Gordon Strachan, the former Scotland, Aberdeen and Manchester United midfielder, who managed Celtic against Messi and Barcelona, was at the Bernabéu that night and called it “One of the greatest goals you’ll see from, in my opinion, the best footballer who has ever played the game.” Tito Vilanova made a shrewd comment when I spoke to him. I had thought the red card for Pepe utterly determining. He had a different perspective. “When Messi dribbles past six players, it’s not important whether the rivals have 10 or 11 men on the pitch – what’s important is that he’s dribbled past six opponents.” Plenty more went on, but those were the key moments. Few, amid the sound and fury, made much of the fact that Guardiola used eight products of the FC Barcelona youth system that night, the youngest of whom was the 19-year-old substitute, Sergi Roberto, who became the 19th canterano (academy trained youngster) to be given a debut by this coach since taking over in June 2008. Fewer than three full years, 19 new kids introduced to a team already packed full of home-bred talent. Utterly remarkable. Sadly, I have to record that there was horrendous racist chanting at Barcelona’s black players. Friends who were in the crowd at the Camp Nou the following week report that these shameful thing happened there. It is a blight on all football, but Spain isn’t fighting it properly. Post-match, Mourinho matched the rubbish he’d produced on the pitch. “Por qué?” he asked, over and over. “Why?” Although he didn’t quite froth at the mouth, it all felt a bit rabid. “If I were to speak my mind to UEFA and to the referee, then my career ends today.” He then named referees who he appeared to be accused of favouring Barcelona In previous fixtures: “Øvrebø, De Bleeckere, Busacca, Frisk, Stark… por qué?” Mourinho had compiled a list of decisions he felt had gone Barça’s way – mostly against his teams. Tom Henning Øvrebø turned down several Chelsea penalty claims in the 2009 Champions League semi-final; Frank De Bleeckere was the referee who sent of Inter’s Thiago Motta the Following year at the same stage; Massimo Busacca red-carded Robin van Persie of Arsenal in the last 16 in 2011; Anders Frisk goes all the way back to 2005 and a red card for Didier Drogba of Chelsea against Barça. Then he returned his focus to Stark and the match Barça had just won. “We’ll play the second leg without Pepe, who did nothing, without Ramos [whose yellow card resulted in a suspension] who did nothing. Without the coach. I only leave one question. Perhaps one day I’ll get an answer. It is: por qué? I don’t know whether it’s the UNICEF publicity. I don’t understand what Øvrebø did two years ago, what happened today or the miracle that took place last year for Inter. They killed us once again. Today it’s been demonstrated that we have no chance at all. We had a game plan which the referee wouldn’t let us use. I don’t know why. This football world sometimes makes me feel sullied. Today we saw that it’s not difficult – it’s mission impossible. And if by some chance we go ahead at the Camp Nou and make the tie a bit more open, well, they’ll kill us again. I would be ashamed to win games like Josep Guardiola – apparently it was disrespectful of me calling him Pep yesterday. The guy’s a fantastic coach, but he won his first Champions League after the scandal of Stamford Bridge – I’d be ashamed to win it that way – and if he wins this year, it’ll be after the scandal of the Bernabéu. He’s a great coach and a great person and that’s why hope that one day he manages to win a Champions League which isn’t tainted.” Just for the record, Guardiola’s reaction was: “A team with nine European Cups in its trophy cabinet will never give up. I’ve seen Madrid play a thousand times in my life, from when I was just a kid, and we all know what they’re capable of. Against any other team with a 0–2 result on the first leg, we’d be sitting pretty. Against this team that isn’t the case. We were already playing well when they had 11 men. Obviously it was easier when they were down to 10, but we had the situation under control before then.” Piqué added: “The first 60 minutes they didn’t attack at all and they were playing at home. When your football borders on out-and-out violence, it’s always going to end badly for you.” The criticism came not just from Barcelona. Guti, Madridista but at that time playing in Turkey, sided not with the incandescent Mourinho, but Guardiola: “Pep is a superstar; all my words about him are of respect and admiration, as much for his coaching as for how he played the game.” Then there was Cristiano Ronaldo. In the first 15 minutes at the Bernabéu, he had tried to press Barcelona and found that none of his colleagues had followed him. Waving his hands to the sky, he encouraged them to close down the Barça defenders high up the pitch – but they had their orders. After the match, Ronaldo was asked about Mourinho’s game plan: “For an attacking player like you, do you like the style of play this team uses?” He answered: “No, I don’t like it, but I have to adapt because that’s the way things are.” His goal had won them the Copa del Rey the previous week, his supply had been cut by Mourinho, not Wolfgang Stark, but for his comments he was dropped that weekend against Zaragoza(all his coach said it was because Ronaldo had had to play 10 against 11 for too long in the semi-final – 29 minutes). Madrid lost 3–2 in that match, allowing Barcelona to rest Puyol, Iniesta, Valdés, Villa, and Pedro for their own 2–1 defeat at Real Sociedad. It all meant that, ahead of the Champions League second leg and with each team lodging complaints with UEFA over the conduct of the other, the Catalans were eight points clear in La Liga, with four matches remaining.

Should Crosby Have Been Suspended?
The lines of right and wrong in the NHL are always blurry when dealing with the biggest star in the league. Sidney Crosby has been surrounded by controversy and criticism his whole career, and this week was no exception. On March 23rd in the dwindling minutes of the first period of the game between Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins and the Ottawa Senators, Crosby gave defence man Marc Methot a two-handed slash. This slash, though technically against the rules, usually occurs many times during a normal NHL game. But unfortunately, this time the play caused some pretty severe consequences. The slash somehow snuck between the cracks of Methot’s glove and absolutely blasted his finger. The camera caught the top of his finger sliced clean off, a mess of blood and broken skin. Methot was immediately pulled out of the game and it was announced that the valuable d-man would be missing the rest of the regular season and the entirety of the Sens assumed post-season run.
There was no penalty called on the play because as I said before this slash occurs many times a game, this particular one just caused unusual circumstances. This sentiment was echoed by league officials and it was announced that Crosby would receive no penalization for the play. Some thought that he did deserve a penalty, such as Senators owner Eugene Melnyk. “Sometimes they miss these things. I hope this guy, and we all know who he is, the guy is just a whiner beyond belief,” said an outraged Melnyk.“You do this kind of stuff — and I don’t care who you are in the league, I don’t care if you’re the No. 1 player in the league — you should sit out a long time for this kind of crap. I really do.”
Many dismissed Melnyk’s remarks as simply being upset that he lost an impactful member of his team, but his sentiment echoes a theme that has been following Crosby through his entire career. Many think he is coddled and protected by the league, never facing consequences for his actions.
So the question remains, should Crosby have been suspended? Personally, I agree with the referees and league officials, though the results of the play were unfortunate it is something that is rarely called during a game and Crosby had no intention to bust Methot’s finger. Let’s hope that Melnyk can focus on preparing the Senators for the postseason, and that Methot recovers fast.
What do you think? Was this an innocent play that is not worth of a suspension, or should an example be made out of Crosby?

How Long Do They Keep You In Jail For A DUI in Utah?
Most people are aware that a DUI offense can have various negative consequences including Driver’s license suspension (though it may be possible to continue driving with an ignition interlock device (IID) installed), Fines and Mandatory alcohol program. However, the possibility of serving jail time is likely the scariest consequence of a DUI conviction or DUI probation violation. It is not always clear when a DUI can land you in jail.
youtube
How long you go to jail for drunk driving in Utah depends on your blood alcohol content (BAC) and whether you have previous drunk driving convictions. The penalties for a DUI conviction in Utah range from no jail time to as many as five years in prison. But even if you escape jail, you could face a number of other penalties for drunk driving in Utah. These penalties could include license suspension, probation, fines, and mandatory alcohol treatment. You will also face many DUI costs of which you were likely unaware.
DUI Penalties in Utah
In Utah, the courts take drunk driving seriously. Even for a first offense, you could face probation, fines, traffic safety school, and alcohol treatment. The penalties get progressively worse if you receive subsequent convictions or if your BAC rises above certain thresholds. The DUI penalties in Utah based on the number of previous convictions you have are as follows:
No Prior DUI Convictions
If you have no prior DUI convictions and your BAC was at or above 0.08% but below 0.1%, you could face: • Up to six months’ probation • A maximum fine of $300 • Mandatory traffic safety school • Possible alcohol treatment
If you have no prior DUI convictions and your BAC was 0.1% or above but below 0.16%, you could face: • A one-year driver’s license suspension • Up to six months in prison • A maximum fine of $5,000 • Mandatory traffic safety school • Possible alcohol treatment

youtube
• Up to an 18-month driver’s license suspension • Up to five years in prison • A maximum fine of $10,000 • Mandatory traffic safety school • Alcohol treatment • One-year ignition interlock
Two or More Prior DUI Convictions
If you have two or more prior DUI convictions and your BAC was at or above 0.08% but below 0.1%, you could face: • Up to a 12-month driver’s license suspension • Up to two years in prison • A maximum fine of $5,000 • Alcohol treatment • One-year ignition interlock If you have two or more prior DUI convictions and your BAC was at or above 0.1% but below 0.16%, you could face:
• Up to an 18-month driver’s license suspension • Up to five years in prison • A maximum fine of $10,000 • Alcohol treatment • One-year ignition interlock
If you have two or more prior DUI convictions and your BAC was at or above 0.16%, you could face:
• Up to an 18-month driver’s license suspension • Up to five years in prison • A maximum fine of $10,000 • Alcohol treatment • One-year ignition interlock
First, Lawyer can review the circumstances of your case and determine if it is possible to create reasonable doubt as to your guilt. Perhaps the arresting officer did not follow proper protocol. Maybe the breathalyzer used to capture your BAC was not properly calibrated. There are dozens of potential ways to call your guilt into question. If it looks as if the prosecution has unassailable proof of your guilt, a lawyer can negotiate with the state to knock your DUI charge down to a lesser charge. Everyone who gets a DUI immediately goes to the “this is the end of the world” extreme, but in reality, DUI’s are charged against all different types of people, and there are definitely folks who you know who have gone through this but have not made their battle publicly known. So the primary thing to know is that you’re not the first person that has gone through this and that people have made it through these circumstances before without it ruining their lives.
Getting one DUI charge doesn’t make you an alcoholic, a bad person, or a low-life. On today’s roadways, police officers generally do not show mercy to anyone who has had even one drink, some marijuana earlier in the day, or, on certain occasions, those drivers who are just taking their medications as prescribed. In short, getting a DUI is a lot easier than you think. If and when it happens, you just have to be ready. For a first-time DUI, an officer does not have to book you into jail and often times, if you are respectful to the officer, he will bring you home after he has processed the DUI so that you can at least sleep in your own bed. Your car will always be impounded when you’re arrested on suspicion of DUI, so getting that back should probably be your first priority, as the bill can rack up quickly if it sits there too long. If you are booked into jail on your first DUI, it is smart to try to bail out as quickly as possible. Bail on a first DUI generally will be $1,000, and you can, therefore, get a bail bond for about $100, or you can post the full amount, which means that it will all be returned to you at the conclusion of the case. One tip here is that if you are eventually convicted of a DUI (under a 0.15 BAC), you will have a mandatory minimum of 24 consecutive hours in jail. Therefore, if you’ve been in jail for let’s say 20 hours and then bail out, you will not be given credit for that.
youtube
It may be wise to sit there for 4 more hours to get the full 24 hours in, which may mean you don’t have to go back to jail later on. Once you are out of jail and you’ve retrieved your car, the best thing you can do is call a DUI attorney. It’s actually wise to call a DUI attorney before you’ve decided whether to take the breath test at the station as well, but here we’re focusing on what to do after you’ve been arrested. Most times when you leave jail or after you’ve been dropped off by the officer, you do not have a court date in your hand yet. You will receive a summons in the mail in the weeks or months following the arrest, which will tell you what your first court date is and what court it will be held in. Again, sometimes this summons comes during the week of the incident and sometimes you have to wait and wait for it to arrive. This depends on several factors, one of which is whether you did a breath test or a blood draw. Blood draw cases have to be sent to be tested and then the results are returned to the prosecutor’s office. This means that your summons in a blood draw case will generally take longer. Just because the summons might take a while to get to you, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to just sit back and do nothing after the arrest, as there is also the Department of Licensing side to a DUI case.
When you get arrested for a DUI you will generally be given a form showing you how to request a Department of Licensing (DOL) Administrative Hearing. This hearing must be requested within 20 days of arrest, regardless of what is happening with your criminal case, so there is a reason to get moving on talking to a DUI attorney once arrested. If you do not request a hearing within this 20-day time period, and your breath test was over the legal limit, your license will be suspended automatically starting 60 days after the incident date. While you don’t technically need an attorney for the DOL hearing, to not have one is to basically throw away the money for the hearing ($375.00) as these are complex hearings where legal issues need to be understood and argued. An attorney can talk to you about what happened while it is fresh in your memory and can even help you submit the DOL hearing request. Essentially, the defense for your DUI can start long before the criminal charge is filed.
In addition to the benefits of having things fresh in your mind and having an attorney there to help you with the DOL hearing from the beginning, there are another few benefits to getting an attorney on board right away. There may be investigative items that need to be looked into which will disappear with time. An attorney might want to have you get started with a drug and alcohol evaluation right away. An attorney may want to start preparing pretrial motions for your case so that they can put the prosecutor on notice of issues right off the bat. These are just a few of the reasons to consult an attorney right away, but the main reason this makes sense is that you’re usually going to be paying an attorney a flat fee for representation, so why not get your money’s worth and have him or her help you throughout? It should be the same cost either way so let your attorney work for you from the get-go. A DUI charge is a daunting task, but having a trusted attorney on your side throughout makes you realize that this won’t be the end of your life as you know it.
An arraignment is the act of bringing a defendant to court and formally reading the charges against him or her. It is at this point that you enter your plea: guilty or not guilty. However, that’s not the only jail time you will serve if you are convicted. All DUI crimes in Utah come with jail time. How long you are in jail depends upon the severity of the crime with which you were charged. Upon being arrested on a DUI charge, you will be brought to the police or Sheriff’s station for processing. If you are injured in a crash related to a DUI, you will be brought to the hospital first, and then processed upon your release.
Once you arrive at the station, you will likely be ordered to take a chemical test to measure the amount of suspected alcohol or drugs in your system. After that, you’ll be read your rights and questioned. You can have a lawyer present for this, if you so choose. From there, your driver’s license will likely be taken away, and you will be given a temporary license in its place. You will be informed that your license is to be suspended, however you have ten days to fight the suspension. You may want to consider retaining a lawyer to help you fight this. Living without a license is incredibly stressful, especially when trying to get to work and back. And the last thing you need is to be charged with driving without a license. While you may be held in a jail cell during this process, this is local prison, not a prison for hardened criminals. If this is your first DUI-related conviction, or if your last DUI-related conviction was more than 10 years ago, you will be sentenced to a minimum of 48 hours in jail, up to but not exceeding six months. Time served will be in a local prison, rather than a state prison and you can usually serve your time in the same city of your arrest. A DUI defense lawyer may be able to work out a negotiation in your favor. For instance, he or she may be able to convince the court to supplement your 48-hour jail sentence with a five-day work release instead.
If, however, this is your second or third offense, the punishments may be more severe: • Second DUI Offense – Up to a year in a local jail • Third DUI Offense – Mandatory six months to a year in a local jail • Fourth (or More) DUI Offense – Up to 3 years in state prison If you have four or more offenses, it no longer matters if they were within the last ten years. You can be sentenced to up to three years in jail, even if it has been ten years since your last conviction.
