Queen Pokou (c. 1700–c. 1760) was born sometime between 1700 and 1720; the daughter of Princess Nyakou Kosiamoa. In the 1750s, she led her followers out from the Ashanti tribe across the Comoé River near the Ivory Coast to establish a new state, one that became powerful in trade during the following century.

BAULE NECKLACE IVORY COAST
COLLIER BAULÉ CÔTE D'IVOIRE
Universal symbol of wealth, beauty, power or divinity, in Baulé country, gold embodies numerous functions, such as the computus of a reign, and its strength was used for medicine, justice and even trials by ordeal.
This necklace is a testimony of the know-how displayed by Baulé goldsmiths. It stands out by the extreme delicacy of its intricate patterns and filigree decorations in lost wax. It is composed of sumptuous gold beads that alternate harmoniously between circular, rectangular and tubular shapes. Each type of bead is linked to a precise concept such as a “setting sun” - for the circular beads - or “grains of wheat” - for the tubular beads.
