The thing about Lisbon right, I saw a Senegalese man have a matching ear piercing with his daughterZ while having breakfast on my last day I saw a black male nurse with double nose piercings and his friend had one single ear piercing. I saw a beautiful Portuguese man with a lip piercing. All the black queer women I met had a nose piercing. I talked with a straight Nigerian man who moved to Lisbon 3 years ago with a single stud.
#txt#and then I remember that one time my brother got a fake stud when we lived in Portugal and my mom beat the shit outta him like… why did she#do that#the Senegalese man has a matching piercing with his daughter what the hell is wrong with my parents lol#my mom is literally Senegalese she should know and act better#anyways isn’t it crazy literally every and they momma have piercings and they’re all so sexy#met so many Africans with piercings I thought I was the only one lol#the Nigerian one def shocked me cuz they always acting like u crucified Jesus on his dick when they see piercings lol

Maybe what was keeping me from reading news from far away countries was having an adblock installed in my PC. Checking tumblr from my phone atm and Senegal5.com is paying so that I can follow the regional election news and candidate Vieux Thiane (who is actually jeune, despite his name).
I now will check on Google maps where the commune de Richard Toll of Senegal is. I am now invested in this.

Youssou N'Dour and Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds 1994
Youssou N'Dour is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, musician, composer, occasional actor, businessman, and politician. From April 2012 to September 2013, he was Senegal's Minister of Tourism. N'Dour helped develop a style of popular Senegalese music known by all Senegambians (including the Wolof) as mbalax, a genre that has sacred origins in the Serer music njuup tradition and ndut initiation ceremonies. He is the subject of the award-winning films Return to Gorée (2007) directed by Pierre-Yves Borgeaud and Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love (2008) directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. In 2006, N'Dour was cast as Olaudah Equiano in the film Amazing Grace.
"7 Seconds" is a song N'Dour wrote and performed together with Swedish-Sierra Leonean singer-songwriter Neneh Cherry. The song is trilingual as N'Dour sings in three languages: French, English and the West African language Wolof. The title and refrain of the song refers to the first moments of a child's life; as Cherry put it, "not knowing about the problems and violence in our world". N'Dour featured the song on his seventh studio album, The Guide (Wommat) (1994), while Cherry included it on her 1996 album Man.
It was a worldwide hit, peaking within the top 10 of the charts in several countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Paraguay and the UK. It climbed to the top position in Finland, France, Iceland, Italy and Switzerland. It stayed at number one for 16 consecutive weeks on the French Singles Chart, which was the record for the most weeks at the top position at the time. On the Eurochart Hot 100, the song reached number two. It won the MTV Europe Music Award in the category for Best Song of 1994.
"7 Seconds" received a total of 45,3% yes votes. :'(

Hey what's up it's me with a special interest in weapons and I wanted to share my thoughts about Nikto's machete (no that's not an innuendo for once)
Had a bit of a solo-mandela effect going on because for the longest time I thought it had a modified 'billhook'-like feature on the back of it for whatever reason (but smaller than what would be considered a traditional billhook, more like a hoof pick blade).
I kind of enjoy still HCing that it does have it because a) it looks kind of cool and b) a terrifying thought to think this man whips this giant intimidating blade out, flips it deftly in his hand to the hook side, just to sink it into flesh and yank people back in when they try to run. Also it allows me to think about a scenario where, resident karambit knife enthusiast Sebastian Krueger, can teach proper blade hooking techniques to our beloved plural man. Anyway back to the knife - It's like a cross between a coup coup and a bola? But has a cool flare like a Tapanga for his newer mwiii model. Also like a vintage Senegalese french machete, which were known for their high quality (might technically be the same thing as the coup coup, just with the locale specified I think, both entrenchment machetes). That curve also kind of reminds me of parangs but it's not particularly drop-pointed.
I HC Nikto as a very brutally pragmatic but particular man, so it doesn't feel too far off to think that he went out of his way to acquire something niche like that. Some kind of custom-made machete that fits his needs just right. The length of it, as well as the curved, ergonomic grip makes me think he's gotten it to do some serious chopping, so it's also probably heavy and weighted forward to make that easier when swinging. I don't see him as a flashy fighter personally, and though maybe it was a stylistic choice for the game devs/artists, I think it's a neat feature that speaks to his character. I do think it's made of hefty steel; weight is important in chopping knives, and though steel rusts, it's sturdy compared to a lot of other metals. Not to mention - I feel like oiling and caring for his weapons, machete included, would be a ritual source of peace for his sometimes loud and chaotic mind. Grounding when he can feel the weight and texture where his nerves aren't completely damaged, smell the oil, have tangible proof that it's reality when he sees the maintained blade even after he becomes unmoored.
Now this is just me WAY reading too much into it, but it gives me a little giggle - The hole at the end of the handle is for a wrist lanyard, so you can loop a piece of paracord rope to secure it around your hand. It's an important safety feature just in case the machete goes flying out of your hand while chopping, lest it hit people in your vicinity (accidentally...?). In his 19 model, he doesn't have the paracord rope attached; Nikto says "Fuck your safety" but also huge ego of "I would never accidentally fling my knife!!"
Could also be because it gets caught on stuff if it dangles off his hip though - he's got one on his newer model where he wears the blade on his shoulder, which looks like a place where it's less likely to snag on things. Could also be because he's been increasingly featured in larger factions, so he works with more people and was asked to have one on hand maybe?? I don't know. In either case the knot in the middle of the rope makes it too small for his wrist which could also be read as a passive-aggressive "Here's the fucking safety rope it's on there ALRIGHT" and yet he's also made it nonfunctional for its intended purpose lmao Okay that's all byeeee
#nikto#kHC#could be completely wrong with all of this but it's fun to think about#I'm not an expert I just have a small handful of knife facts#cod#kdraws

LAST POLL OF ROUND 5
Propaganda
Sophia Loren (Marriage Italian Style, Houseboat)—Major Italian star, first actress to win an Oscar for a performance not in English (for Two Women (1960)) and later when Roberto Benigni won an Oscar in 1999 he jumped over the chairs towards the stage going "Sophia Sophia!!" because he was running towards Sophia Loren and said he cared more about her than the Oscar, that's the effect she had on people. She was big in the 60s already even though she gained a lot more notoriety after that. And I mean. Can we take a moment and just.
Mbissine Thérèse Diop (Black Girl)—She’s a Senegalese actress known for starring in Black Girl, one of the first African films to receive international attention/acclaim. So much of the movie relies on her ability to convey her character’s sense of isolation/loneliness, she’s so amazing, I really wish she had acted more. However, she just recently appeared in the film Cuties!
This is round 5 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Sophia Loren:
She has maxed out all her stats: beauty, elegance, sensuality, she's got it all. her mesmerizing eyes, her sensual mouth, her sharp face shape, her everything is so striking and unlike any other beauty in films. she was also voted the world most beautiful woman when she was freaking 65
im submitting her in honor of my dad bc she was the first celebrity crush of his he ever admitted to me and my sister :) and he was right. shes so pretty
OSCAR WINNER. Worked with some of the hottest leading men in Hollywood but remained faithful to her husband whom she had a loving marriage with till he died (even though Cary Grant almost tempted her once, it's complicated)
One of the most well-known sex symbols of the Golden Age of Hollywood, and unlike some unfortunate others, she seems to have been pretty well at peace with occupying that status. She made assertiveness and a tempestuous temper seem glamorous, and although she's famous for side-eying Jayne Manisfield's cleavage, honestly? She's one to talk.
Absolutely, drop-dead sexy, also a hard working, extraordinarily talented actress who didn't shy away from the less glamorous roles to gift us some gritty, memorable performances
Submitting this on behalf of my dad, who knows nothing of tumblr or this blog, but I remember being a kid watching Houseboat while my mom thirsted after Cary Grant, dad thirsted after Sophia Loren, and I was excited that they lived on a boat. Anyway, she's extremely beautiful and was an international star, doing a ton of movies in Italy before being recognized in the US.
JUST LOOK AT HER Y'ALL
Very smart and beautiful, the characters that she played (I mean those in the movies that I put in the previous question) are as strong and determined as her which I think adds to her hotness.
Global superstar and my late grandfather's long time movie star crush and for a man as quiet as he was, and as hopelessly devoted to his wife as he was, the fact that I know that means she was EXCEPTIONAL.
Big in the chest, snatched in the waist, pretty in the face 😳
Sexy, beautiful, deep. A real star.
Her performance in "Man of La Mancha" is just so very captivating. Dubbed as "the Italian Marilyn Monroe", she looks beautiful in any movie and at any age.
Forget the exotic sexpot of her Hollywood films and go back to her Italian career: sparking with Marcello Mastroianni as the woman who drives him mad and outwits all his fumbling attempts at macho posturing in their early films, and showing a tender side in their 1970s films. Sophia isn’t self-conscious about who she is or her beautiful body: she enjoys being herself and she wants us all to enjoy ourselves too.
She starred in films as a sexually emancipated persona and was one of the best known sex symbols of the time. She is a great cook and her filmography is immense.
On the misattributed quote that Sophia owed everything to spaghetti: 'Did you actually say the quote frequently attributed to you, "Everything you see I owe to spaghetti"?' "Non è vero! It's not true! It's such a silly thing. I owe it to spaghetti, no, no. Completely made up."
Mbissine Thérèse Diop:

maurice leblanc was like. what if johnlock but they only plan jewel and art heists together and dress in outrageous disguises every single time. the genius one fakes his death but the friend actually helps him do it and they still hang out while he's supposed to be dead and they have so much fun together. and this netflix team was like awesome. we're serving this with bbc sherlock aesthetics. we're casting the most beautiful and charming man on earth. he's black and senegalese and all the heists are gleefully duping white french colonizers and robbing them of their blood diamonds. and that's what you missed on lupin!

Not sure if you're following the Olympics but Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer, is now being the target of so much hatred for being a "man" despite the fact she's cis, she just happens to have higher testosterone levels (much like Serena Williams! Who's even a mom!). Intersex people can be cis.
Terfs and racists go hand in hand! It's always the "we can always tell" crowd expect when it's a racialized cis woman who does not conform to your "ideal" beauty types..
Not following the whole thing I’m boycotting but I’ll answer this because of the racism and transphobia surrounding this whole case (because I’m boycotting I’m answering based on what went through my muted words and my block list on Twitter)
First of all even if she wasn’t cis and was trans she would still be a woman. Now that this very important part is out of the way let’s talk about the rest.
In her case she happens to be a cis woman but racist transphobic pieces of shit are being even more violent just because they can’t accept that a brown woman was better than a white woman and because said white woman pulled the white woman tears tactic because she is shit at boxing compared to Imane.
That being said I’m just going to quote a Senegalese guy from Twitter: Y’all are creating an Algeria against the rest of world atmosphere and it’s a mistake. Algerians thrive in that kind of atmosphere.
We’re used to fighting colonizers pieces of shit. They are not the first or the last ones (but close to the last ones Incha’Allah) and we never back down from fighting them.

Chidi Anagonye was raised in Senegal
As Kamilah tells us in season 3, "Chidi" is an Igbo word meaning "God exists" (double checked with Behind the Name)
Chidi's father, Emeka, also has an Igbo Name
The Igbo people are from Nigeria
Nigeria is not close to Senegal. They are about 2,500km/1,550mi apart.
According to Wikipedia, there is not a significant Igbo population in Senegal
Chidi's mother, Ndeye, does have a Senegalese name. (x) (x) (x) (it's not on Behind the Name but several other websites agree that is from the Wolof language in Senegal, so... here's hoping they're right)
Ok so now I have SO many questions about Chidi's family. Did Emeka immigrate to Senegal? Why Senegal? Chidi's birth year is set to about 1982/1983, and the Nigerian government was having crisis after crisis at the time. Colonialism looms large over this entire story for obvious reasons. Nigeria gained independence in 1954, and Senegal in 1959. Nigeria had two coups in 1966, followed by civil war from 1967-1970. There was an oil boom in the 1970s, but obviously the people did not see much of the profits from that as the military government had no interest in raising the standard of living. There was another coup in 1975, and then another in 1976. From the early 80s to 1999, the Nigerian government was a corrupt military dictatorship before democracy was reinstated (x).
In comparison, Senegal had a much more consistent government committed to democracy, diplomacy, and human rights. There was violent conflict and border tensions, but broadly things were more stable, and Wikipedia claims Senegal had "one of the more successful post-colonial democratic transitions in Africa" (x).
All this stuff could never be explored in the show for obvious reasons: it's a comedy (showrun by a white man and made almost entirely by Americans), but I'm still left wondering about it. What was it like for Emeka to move so far away from home? What was it like for Chidi to grow up both Wolof and Igbo, with an Igbo name? How did Emeka keep him in touch with his roots that were thousands and thousands of miles away, or did he encourage assimilation instead? Was this challenging at all for Chidi, growing up?
Also, and I'm going to preface this by saying I am in no position to write this arc/plotline, but I think there's something to be said here, and it could've fit really well into the story if there were west African writers in the writers room who wanted to explore this. Chidi's whole thing is about choice, and he is someone from two different cultures. They could've written a story about Chidi learning not to see himself as two separate halves, but one whole person. But tbh? I don't think they cared to. I'm not sure how much of this is intentional, how much of this implied story of an immigrant leaving his home for greener pastures, falling in love with a woman, and having a baby who then finds making a choice between two things the biggest challenge in the world was intentional, versus how much they just googled "African names." I know Chidi's name is somewhat intentional, given how they explicitly bring up its etymology in season 3, but do they care that the Igbo people are not from or in Senegal? They did seem to forget that Chidi says his native language is French in season 1. Plus they are sorta forced to gloss over the fact that Chidi's actor is American and has an American accent. Or maybe this was 100% intentional and hidden in there for people who either know all of this already or bother to google stuff. I don't know. I just remembered that the Igbo people are from Nigeria and Chidi has an Igbo name, and was pretty sure Chidi didn't say he was Nigerian, so I googled him and went to his fandom wiki page and fell down the rabbit hole from there.
(I am not west African nor do I know much about the histories and cultures of west Africa, so all my sources have been linked in this post, which were Wikipedia and name websites, my apologies if there are any errors in this post, and if there are, please feel free to correct me.)

*FOURTH WING x CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE/reality/cute*
We finished wrapping up filming for 'Children of Blood and Bone', and now months later we are ready to attend our first fan meeting and promotion event for the season.
I was so excited wearing this beautiful silhouette made by a Malian tailor. The quality cotton dress is black with small blue printed flowers. The above-the-knee length dress was long-sleeved and fitted in the top. The tailor created unique wrapping styles with the fabric that made my upper body look great! From my waist down the dress pleated and was flowy. Paired with a simple black heel with straps wrapping around my ankle and a few African gold accessories, I looked like an African princess like my character Amari. My hair is in exquisite cornrows made by a talented Senegalese braider. The cornrows were braided into a high ponytail, with the length of the hair hitting midway of my back. The ponytail is accessorized by a piece of my dress. Simple makeup to finish the look and I'm ready to face my fans.
All four of us main characters in the film were ready to go on stage for Q&A and meeting the fans. As we begin to step on the stage, I try to give a model facial expression and slowly strut the stage, until I randomly break into a cute little African dance that makes the audiences scream and laugh. I turn fully to face the audience and give them a big genuine smile. It truly was a gift to have fans that like all that you do even if it's random.
We get through our fun Q&A session and head backstage. One our reps come up to us tells us that the cast for Fourth Wing are in another room, as their session is start in an hour and that one of the cast would love to meet us. We all look at each other and nod, agreeing that we should. Personally. I wanted to meet them too and get to see the cast who are portraying characters of one of my favorite books. I was especially curious to see the man who plays Xaden Riorson, who, if you have read the book, knows that he is described to be simply put "hot"!
We approach the door and I'm in the front so I knock first then slowly open it, sneaking my head in first before revealing my whole self. I smile widely as all the cast members look up me in shock. I shortly laugh and open the door fully, and said, "Hii!". The rest of my cast file in. And what I assume the girl who is playing Imogen jumps up and gives me hug. She says, "I'm. A. Fan.!" And squeals. I thank her and formally introduce myself. I don't like to assume that everyone knows me as one of the youngest black women to be 2x Oscar winner with few other rewards under my belt. If anything, the title is humbling.
We all make our hellos and hugs. The casting did amazing, I can instantly tell who plays who, like they are spot on. Like the girl playing Violet, is just absolutely gorgeous.
But, my heart makes a leap when I finally make eye contact with the man who plays Xaden Riorson. Yup, the casting directors did their job well. Damn, I thought, he was finnee. His eyes were a natural golden brown, an awing contrast with his tawny brown skin. I realize I haven't said a word or moved. "Hi, I'm s/o", I say as I reach out to him for a hug. I'm at a lost for words, I start to feel embarrassed. In my industry, I am surrounded by beautiful men of all calibers all the time, but why does he make me feel a little nervous and quiet. "I know, it's nice to meet you", he says with his deep, velvety voice. I softly smile back and respond, "me too". All being said without breaking eye contact. I unwillingly break away from him, I didn't even realize I was still holding onto to his one arm. I give him one last look, then greet the person next to him, who I can tell plays Liam.
The man playing Liam is cute, I give him a slight sad smile knowing what his character in the book, and now this film will befall to. It seems like he knows that look all too well and begins to laugh. I laugh as well and tell him, "I should know better as actress to feel bad for an actor playing a fantasy character who has a horrible outcome. But it's hard to separate the two. "Yeah, well, knowing the lovely character I play, everyone who has read the book, gives me the same look. Haha. Your sympathies have been accepted, cause I'll be out of a job after this!", he replies. Omg. I laughed out loud.
We all chat for a bit, admiring and complimenting each other and wishing each other luck for our movie success. We knew their time to get ready for their own Q&A was approaching. As I was walking away, the man playing Xaden slightly touched my arm and said, "By the way, you look beautiful. Truly. Like an African Princess. " I blink once, then smile shyly, feeling a blush rising on my caramel brown cheeks, and reply, "Thank you, and you are...". "And that's all. There's no need to compliment me back, I just wanted to let you know. " I smiled back and nodded in understanding. Just take the compliment and go, I tell myself. I also hoped this wasn't the last time I'll see him again. Just from our short moment, I felt that instant chemistry and the stomach churning feeling that alerts me that I like him already. Am I somewhat transferring my feels for a character to a real person. Ugh. Obviously, he isn't Xaden Riorson and doesn't have the same personality. Just the looks. Ugh, I hate falling in love with book charaters, like as an actress like me who has played many roles, should definitely know better than to do that. Before we actually leave, we decided to take a group photo. I somehow end up standing right next to the man playing Xaden Riorson.
***WOW. She was stunning. I thought as I watched the girl who plays Amari in Children of Blood and Bone walk across the stage with her other cast mates for their Q&A session. She obviously had a cute personality and wasn't afraid to do a little dance, that only made the audience scream even louder. I kept my facial expressions neutral, but I was impressed by her presence, even though I wasn't in the same room as her. I notice my other Fourth Wing cast mates watching the screen as well. My castmate who plays Violet says, "wow. How is that whole cast just beautiful!". Other hummed in agreement.
It was inspiring to see that cast of seasoned actors as I finally just landed a lead role to play Xaden Riorson for the Fourth Wing film. I'm yet to find out if it was my potentially resembling look to the description of the character, my acting skills, or both that landed me this once in a lifetime role. I hope it's the latter.
Moments later, I heard a knock on the door, and there was that beautiful girl with that cheeky smile peaking through the room. Everyone reacts, except me, I stay quiet because I was speechless, especially the moment she fully walked into the room. She exudes a calm confidence that I just found it to be sexy. And her look was just perfect, her dress was made for her. I took a mental note of how kind she was to everyone as she greeted with a hug and humbly introduced herself, even though we all know who she is.
She now approaches me and we lock eyes. I smile and I give her a half-armed hug. Again, she is even more beautiful up-close with her chocolate brown eyes, not losing contact with mine and her smile that makes me smile back. She also smelled great. "Hi, I'm s/o", she says in a soft, slightly deep, toned voice. "I know, it's nice to meet you", I reply. Is that really all I can say? We still hold each other's arms for a moment. Is she feeling what I'm feeling? A connection that I'm suddenly feeling. She then replies, "me too", and unfortunately breaks away and turns to my cast mate who plays Liam. I hear her laugh and see that they are having a short conversation. She laughs again but louder to whatever he said, and I instantly felt jealous. Why couldn't I have done that? I look away from them.
Looks like it's time for to get ready for our session. As she's about to walk past me to leave, I tap her elbow and said, "By the way, you look beautiful. Truly. Like an African Princess". She blinks once and I'm relieved when she shyly smiles back and thanks me. I knew she was about to give me a compliment back, but I interrupted her to not. In that moment, I just wanted to tell her genuinely how beautiful she was. I hope it wasn't the last time I was going to see her.
